The kindness surviving

As I can't stop saying, one of my favourite things about Spy x Family is how focused it is on humanity's innate kindness. Its premise is three lonely people finding a family (and themselves) with each other, the story's endgame is to secure peace, it's hopeful in the midst of its realism, and it allows characters to be vulnerable when it comes to family and connections.

And one more thing that is added to that, is how Yor and Twilight (to a less obvious degree) have retained their kindness and compassion through their violent lives and professions.

Yor started the assassin gig when she was just a teenager.

Adding to that how it was a choice she made out of despair and lack of any other choice, and how the Shopkeeper seems like a despicable person to work under (there's no moral merit to recruiting children for assassinations, let alone orphans with no other choices left), this could have easily made into a story of how Yor became cold and emotionless and cruel.

Instead, particularly thanks to having Yuri in her life, she's remained as kind as ever, even when she kills people. She doesn't torture her targets, would rather refrain spilling unnecessary blood, and she's careful and quick in her job.

And through all that, her priority has never been herself.

She's kind, almost to a fault. She's polite and when it comes to everyone else but her targets, she thinks they have the best interests at heart and can even be confused sometimes as to why some people behave in a rude or cruel way.

She's human. Her reason to start and continue being an assassin was to ensure her brother's carefree life, and now that she's bonded with the Forgers, they've joined Yuri in the way she wishes to protect their peaceful life.

It's showing that despite her violent work, her humanity has prevailed, making her selfless and nurturing. It's in our nature.

Twilight's case is handled differently, as he has denied himself any identity and attachments to ideals, aside from protecting the peace.

He's not supposed to "have" traits or a personality. He was trained to be able to adapt to any situation and become the role he's acting as. When he acts as a father, he can be kind and caring. When he acts as a terrorist, he can be cruel and violent. And when his job gives him no option but to kill people who stand in his way, he'll do it without remorse.

But again, like Yor, his reason to do everything he does is to ensure peace remains, so that no-one will have to suffer like he did. That's a very empathetic and compassionate motivation, and though the circumstances of his life made him bury it deep, the moment Anya cries and clutches onto him for comfort he's reminded securely of that.

As he is when he sees Anya smile.

He cares for the next generation and wants to provide it with a better future than he had. And while the previous season showed many moments of instinctual kindness (saving the kid from the charging cow, sparing the German shepherd, thanking Bond for saving Anya, encouraging Carroll Campbell to play fairly) and understanding of how humans can work together (his discussion with Desmond, talking about how despite different stances, people can still meet in the middle if they try), the cruise arc showed how he prioritized on making Anya happy. While at first he was confused by the concept of "having fun", he eventually ended up observing Anya and encouraging activities that would make her happy.

Again, after a certain point the "mission" is nowhere in his mind and he only worries how Anya's mood will affect her and the family. As he focuses on that, he turns compassionate, empathetic, and dare I say, sweet.

And I can't help thinking those are traits he doesn't have to pretend that much to show, if at all.

He's a master of manipulation and deception. He could act tooth-rottingly sweet to deceive his targets, but seeing how open and unprecedentedly honest he becomes with Yor, and how (even if he doesn't realize it) he actually learns to be a good father to help Anya with her mood, I don't think that's the case with those two (three, if you count Bond too!).

If nothing else, we (and Anya) have the advantage of hearing his thoughts, and while we joke about how "For The Mission" is his flimsy excuse to himself for the feelings he's developing for his family, it's truly important how he's started to not need the reminder; how he can instinctively care for them, because it's what his compassionate nature tells him to do.

And I think, just like Yor, it's very important and telling that through his life of violence and deception, his humanity has survived just under the surface and is starting to show more the longer he stays with the Forgers. He's not "learning" to be compassionate and caring; those are traits that already existed, but he had to cover with all his fake identities. However, since they were what led him to become a spy in the first place, the way didn't replace the motivation.

He's human, even though he willingly trained to suppress any such vulnerable spots, they could never be extinguished entirely.

This story is full of hope for humanity and how kindness can survive and prevail among anything else. Its characters would logically follow the example.

And I love them for it.

Benny is mad-scientist-adjacent in my mind. He’s almost one of those but hes an engineer instead. Still a freak.

Benny has facial hair. its in the storyboards and I cling to it like a koala to a tree during a forest fire

Benny IS short but he floats to peoples height so most don’t even notice

Old ass men. Benny would be born sometime before the 80s so he could actually grow up during that time! 1970 something.

For that matter, GCBC is also old as hell. Similar age to benny but he did not age anywhere near as well 😭😭 UGLY!

Benny and GCBC play fight like dogs.

Benny is NOT SKINNY!! this man eats ice cream every day he would not be skinny! no!

And for that matter, GCBC isn’t skinny either. Fat GCBC or death!

Hard of hearing benny. He works with spaceships those things are loud!

I dont think benny would care about pronouns. I usually use he/him for benny but i really dont think hed have a preference like everyone calls him he/him so he just goes with it.

On the other clawhand, GCBC is WOKE!!! He/it good cop he/she bad cop, collectively he/they because they are literally TWO GUYS!!!

Hudson and Rex S06E08

Another good episode. As a disclaimer, I’ve had a pretty specific idea of how this episode should be like, so I went in a little bit negatively predisposed. Also, these aren't in order. Sorry.

I remember the dead guy. He was in the episode with Meghan Ory’s character, the first one of the two.

“He’s dead. Are you happy?” Calm down, ma’am, you’re giving him reasons to be stupidly self-sacrificing.

Joe: Charlie no. Charlie: Charlie yes.

“We’re going to transfer all the inmates I’ve arrested out of the prison.” You’ll… what… now?

“I’ll find your killer and get rid of your drug problem”. And also fix your plumbing (oh, wait), clean your laundry, and create a gourmet menu for your prison.

Okay they did find a good reason for Rex to be in there. I'd still have preferred Charlie alone in prison and Rex investigating on the outside.

I hate this hairstyle. There, I said it. However, it’s more fitting to prison inmate Chuck than what Charlie has had all season so far as a cop. Which has actually been tolerable as an image despite not fitting the character, and I refuse to spend more time on that because I keep seeing it being commented on and when this keeps happening, I feel bad.

I think I know the actor who plays Charlie’s prison bunkmate but I can’t place him.

Charlie displayed a lot of badassery in this episode. Also, I think John Reardon did some good work acting wise in this one.

Charlie said “I love you”, “babe”, “you’re the hottest woman I’ve ever seen”, “sweetheart” to Sarah, and all of that while he was undercover in prison and through the phone??? Who do I talk to about this? How was there not a better moment for this? It’s like they wanted to throw these words out in the open in the least romantic way possible.

The way I hate “babe” and yet every single couple I ship is using it… They’re lucky I’ve been desensitized since Castle.

And Sarah’s facepalm on the other end lmao. It’s obviously not the first “I love you” at least. I wonder what she calls him.

I liked the instrumental music for the prison scenes. It was very much on point.

Damn, they put him in solitary for 24 hours. This couldn’t have awakened any claustrophobic feelings from a) the freezer b) the cave collapse, c) the coffin he was buried in d) the containers that almost turned him into a pancake? Come on, guys. Also, do they or do they not have solitary in Canada? It can’t keep changing according to the season.

Sarah worried because her idiot almost died in prison. Charlie finally (I might pass out) having a moment of weakness? Saying that he misses Sarah and Rex? I did not think I'd live to see it.

Jesse saying that they'd pull out Charlie if it gets too dangerous… This is way too optimistic. Realistically, he would have gotten shivved before anyone could do anything about it.

Rex totally wanted to maul that guy for injuring Charlie. Once again, why can’t we see him baring his teeth? German shepherds have scary canine teeth, they’re not just cute and cuddly.

I liked Joe as a guard. And interrogating the suspect, getting a bit handsy with him.

Detective Jesse Mills. Doing interrogations. Detecting lol

Bringing back a bad guy from S1? Interesting choice. I barely remember the guy. And wasn’t that episode like a collective fandom hallucination or something? When Charlie mentioned the guy had killed a kid I was like, oh so we haven’t seen that case. That’s how much I don’t remember that episode.

“Lots can change in that time” Charlie, you’re squeaky clean, bud. You tried to be “bad” in S4 and lasted for like four minutes.

Also, in every show I’ve seen, once a cop enters prison, no one cares whether he’s a disgraced cop. They’d want to kill him either way.

Either they shot the scenes of the prison yard in one day or it was raining all the days they had those scenes. Very gloomy weather, it added a bit of extra grime to the episode.

“Do you want to read the letters with me?” Absolutely not. He wants to go back home, hug his girlfriend and have a hot shower to wash the prison off of him. Maybe this all happened off screen already. I don’t care. I didn’t see it so it didn’t happen.

I liked the episode. It didn’t go my way at all but it’s understandable. I wanted some more danger towards the end, as people were catching on to the fact that Charlie was a cop. Also, Charlie had way too much communication with the team, I know it doesn’t make sense for me to not want that, but it also doesn’t make sense for an undercover cop in prison to be able to be in touch with almost every member of his team throughout the episode. Did I want a Charlie and Sarah scene in the end? Absolutely.

Promo: That is a pretty lame promo for what should be a character centric episode. It looks like a complete filler, devoid of character moements. I hope it will be a character centric episode and not a filler NCIS episode (because Navy). Hopefully it’s just lousy promo editing and not a lousy episode. Interesting choice for Charlie’s dad. And I know people might hate me for this, but I’ll say it anyway. I did prompt a few storylines to an AI model about Charlie facing off his dad, and the AI would always, always have his dad call him Charles. Fucking hell.

There’s no way Sarah is not meeting Charlie’s dad, right? I need to be reassured.

Dude seems so dismissive of Rex that I hope Rex bites him. He should be allowed to bite family members who are being assholes.

Eren:

Okay so actually I don’t think that Eren would like the idea of pets!

Putting a free animal in a “cage” (even if that cage is just your house), collaring it, only feeding it a certain type of food, it all rubs him the wrong way.

I think the closest he would get to being okay with a pet would be having an indoor/outdoor cat. Having a little cat door so it could come and go as it pleased, and it can go hunting for its own food if it doesn’t want its cat food you buy. Treating the kitty more like a roommate/friend than a pet! I also think he would name it something stereotypical like “Tiger”

Mikasa:

Hear me out: fish.

I think she’d LOVE having a little aquarium!! Going out and picking each fish with you, naming them with you, decorating the tank with you,,,, she’d LOVE it omg

Would call you in the middle of the day sometimes like “so the clownfish are NOT getting along 😣” sends you videos of the fish swimming around, loves just watching them. You two like coming up with little personalities and making up fish tank drama. The 104th LOVE hearing out it lmao. She’d INSIST on you being the one to name them because she says she isn’t creative 🙁

Armin:

I think he’d be cool with any pet you wanted, but if you asked him what pet he wants, I think he might enjoy having a bunny! He likes cute things!!

+ I used to have this really cute bunny, but he was like absurdly grumpy all the time. So imagining Armin with this grumpy little bunny is SO funny

Just him being like, “um yeah, you can hold it. But he does bite sometimes. And kick. No, he doesn’t stop glaring 😥”

He would probably name it after a book character or a famous philosopher!

She’s a hamster girl. She LOVES watching it fill its little cheeks up with food. If she had to be any animal in the whole world she’d be a hamster.

She finds the BEST toys and wheels for it, has a whole dedicated hamster room in your house 😅 lowkey might become a hamster tiktoker. Be prepared for her to call you in a panic every time she thinks something is wrong though

Okay I think Jean is the dad stereotype where he acts like he hates the pet and doesn’t want it but then like a week later he is obsessed with it,,,

So imagine: you tell Jean that you kind of want to expand your little family by getting a pet, and he says no, that he’s uncomfortable with the amount of responsibility having a pet requires. You respect him obviously, even if you’re disappointed.

Then one day it’s raining really heavily and he hasn’t come home from work yet, so you start getting worried. But then he walks in the door soaking wet, clutching something to his chest. He leans foreword showing you that it’s a little dog-

“I think it got hit by a car”

So the two of you nurse it back to heath together, and you take it to the vet to see if it has an owner, it does but they don’t want it. So now you and Jean have a little dog.

The dog loves you obviously,, but it LOVES Jean, you think it must realize that he saved its life 🥺

Jean acts like he doesn’t like the clinginess of the dog at first,, but give it like a week and the two will literally be inseparable 😭

Connie:

Okay you already know he’s a dog guy.

He wants a big dog he can run around with and play. A dog that will match his energy,, but is also good with kids because he definitely wants kids one day. So like a Golden Retriever or a German Shepherd!!

I don’t even think that you have to bring up wanting a pet, I think he would bring it to you first 😭

And MAN does he love that dog 🥺 they go on runs every day, and he can literally spend hours playing fetch with him and teaching him tricks

Historia:

Okay so hear me out, I think she’d get a Gecko.

You tell her you want to get a pet and she is like “oh, that’s a great idea!!” So you guys go to a shelter with every intention of getting somthing fluffy, but she just so happens to see someone surrendering their Leopard Gecko. It was really small, looked kinda sick, and the tail had fallen off. Like it was very much not doing good. And she had to take it.

You guys some home with it (and with medicine from the vet) and she’s immediately googling Leopard Geckos. In like a few hours she’s an expert, and knows exactly what supplies she needs.

She nurses it back to heath almost all by herself with little help from you (even though you wanted to help, she wanted to save the gecko herself). When the tail started growing back she SOBBED in your arms.

Hange:

They totally like snakes right?? Like I can see them collecting the shed skins and putting them in resin. I also think they’d like ferrets!!!! Just curious little guys who have a ton of energy?? They would def have snakes and ferrets‼️‼️‼️‼️ If you guys get ferrets though Levi refuses to be in the same room as them because ferrets are stinky lmao

Levi:

He’s a cat guy 💯 at first he wouldn’t want a pet because animals are dirty but he’ll eventually come around to the idea. Cats clean themselves and they don’t need too much attention and are independent, so I think he’d respect them. If you see him up in the early morning drinking tea and petting the cat, he’ll deny it 🫢

i'm in the process of preparing and starting a new neighborhood based on the sims 1's old town and wanted to share and record my progress! i need to give a shoutout to @tvickiesims' old town sims recreated which i am using as the basis of this file! in addition, the neighborhood itself was created by @kalisasims and cleaned by sunraidersims.

anyways! i first started with the hick family which i actually did a lot of major changes to. the main thing is that i've started to merge the lore with the broke family of sims 3 in hopes to eventually be a part of the pleasantview broke family.

i've never played the sims 3, but i was slightly inspired by the sims 3 broke family's home with the multiple buildings. i also put each building on a foundation (a pain in the ass, i had to shift the main building one tile because it just wouldn't let me put a foundation there) since there is no way a house like this should be at ground-level. the new shack is not very substantial but i figure i'll add to it as the family gets more money. i also replaced the interior bathroom with an outhouse (a sims 1 recreation by @crispsandkerosene) and a dorm shower which makes a huge mess so idk if i'll keep it that way. but! makes more room in the house.

(also ngl i moved to another lot a little further from the main strip of old town because it didn't fit the business district aesthetic i want for that area...... i'm sorryyyyy)

ANYWAYS to now introduce the cast:

first we have elden hick from the original family. i changed his look a bit and aged him down to a teen but he is still CC-free. i made him a pleasure sim and changed his personality and interests to match his sims 1 (usa) version. he is 0 neat/5 outgoing/7 active/8 playful/5 nice.

elden is a bit of a rebellious teen who is head over heels with his girlfriend, flo. he is not very ambitious, which is a pain point between him and his mother.

also seen here is leroy the rottweiler. i'm not a fan with the default sims 2 dog breeds so i replaced the original leroy with a male rottweiler designed by PharoahHound. leroy's personality is between doofus and genius/hyper/independent/aggressive/pigpen and is the youngest of the family's three dogs.

back to the human sims, next we have mama hick and (a character who was not in the sims 1) baby named skip broke. :) mama is a elden's mother is an adult popularity sim in about the middle of her life stage. mama used to be a celebrity in sim city, but has since fallen from fame after losing her fortune (and having her son ngl). mama's interests and personality are based on her north american sims 1 personality which is neat 2/outgoing 4/active 2/playful 7/nice 7.

the mother of skip and elden's girlfriend is none other than flo broke! flo is basically a female dustin broke with dyed red hair (genetically blonde). like elden, she prefers a bit of a punk style. she is a family sim and has a personality of 5 nice/6 outgoing/4 active/3 playful/6 nice. she loves both elden and skip, but her relationship with mama is difficult. mama blames flo for being a bad influence on her son. still, mama let flo live on her property once she got kicked out.

another of the three dogs is bobo the male australian shepherd, who is the oldest of the three dogs. like all the dogs here, the previous bobo was replaced with a new one (this one was made by DemittiNix with minor color edits). bobo's personality is doofus/lazy/independent/aggressive/in between pigpen and finicky.

finally, the last and middle dog is duke, the male german shepherd! duke is edited from Fifar and probably the most edits i've done on any sim in this family. tbh i am pretty proud of it, though fifar did do most of the work! duke's personality is doofus/lazy/in between independent and friendly/aggressive/finicky. pretty much all the dogs here are aggressive and independent so they are definitely a challenge!

the house i feel has a lot to be desired but in general i'm really looking forward to actually playing this family!

1. Are you named after anyone? Nope, I named myself. XD. Though I choose the name Ben because I love Obi-Wan Kenobi, so I could argue I named myself after one of my favorite characters.

2. When was the last time you cried? A few days ago actually. I don't cry easily anymore, but I tend to cry at least a few times a week.

3. Do you have kids? Thankfully no, but I have a goddaughter.

4. What sports do you play/have you played? I played Field Hockey for 18 years. I was a goalie. And until my teens I was really good at climbing ropes, trees, rock walls, etc. I also love swimming and walking, though these days I can't do many kinds of sports anymore due to chronic illness.

5. Do you use sarcasm? Sarcasm, is that a thing? Never heard of it. /s

6. What’s the first thing you notice about someone? Energy/presence. Body language. Vibes. I'm pretty good at determining someone's vibes by meeting them. To a point of hypersensitivity to it. Makes interacting with people so difficult.

7. What’s your eye color? Blue with central heterochromia. I have a brown-yellow ring around my pupil.

8. Scary movies or happy endings? Happy endings! I do like some scary movies like ready or not, but only if the endings are happy.

I couldn't let him discard her as well. And the late Mojo (my ESA) who unfortunately passed away earlier this year. I miss him, but he's still my baby. His ashes are home.

Pairing: Hangman x Female OC

Summary: Hangman learned his lesson a long time ago to never show his true feelings when someone's words or actions hurt him. To do so showed weakness that could be exploited, and Seresin men couldn't show weakness. Of course, there was an exception to every rule, and Jake's always came in the form of women, three in particular: his mom, Juliette Kazansky, and the girl whose name he could no longer bring himself to speak. She was the girl that got away; she was his biggest 'what if' and his biggest regret; she would forever be the ghost that haunted his dreams. Jake believed that's where she'd stay, for he would surely never see her again after what he did.

Or so he thought.

Notes: This is the sequel to India Lima Yankee; I'm using the same callsign for the Female OC as in Ghost Story because I just really like it, but they are different characters; chapters in italics are flashbacks.

Ghost

Juliette and Rooster adored the presents Ghost gave them, laughing at the wine and beer glasses that said "Because Twins" and grinning like children themselves over the multiple outfits for each other and the babies. 

"Thank you for all of this! These are wonderful!" Juliette exclaimed, hugging her friend tightly. Rooster followed suit. "I can't wait for the day I can actually fill that wine glass with alcohol. I don't drink a lot by any means, but God, I'd kill to have some Baileys or whiskey. Or both. Both is good."

"Speaking of killing someone, the Daggers might kill us if we're late," Rooster said, checking the time. "We better get going. Ghost, want a ride?"

"Thanks, but I'll just take my motorcycle. Besides, I think the dogs want to come." Ghost nodded at the two German Shepherds sitting at the door, their tags wagging and tongues flopped out to the side while they stared expectantly at their owners.

Juliette placed her hands on her hips. "Boys, do you want to go to the beach?" She asked, causing both dogs to bark eagerly and dance in circles around each other. The trio laughed at their excitement. "All right, follow Daddy to the car. Momma's gotta grab her purse." 

Rooster opened the door, and the dogs bolted out. Ghost waited for Juliette to grab her purse. She noticed her friend take some Tylenol, prompting her to ask, "You okay?"

"Yeah, I've been having bad headaches recently. I think it's the lack of sleep and the strain this big belly puts on my back. I have a doctor's appointment in a couple of days, so I'll bring it up with her then, make sure it's nothing to worry about."

"You up to going to the beach? If not, I'll stay here with you," Ghost offered. As much as she meant her words sincerely out of concern for her friend. Ghost also prayed Jules wished to stay home so she wouldn't have to face Hangman.

"Yeah, I'll sit in the shade with Penny and play fetch with the dogs. Come on. You're going to love the game!"

Trying to hide her disappointment, Ghost plastered on a smile and followed Juliette out the door. She hopped onto her motorcycle and trailed closely behind Rooster to the beach, trying to ignore the nerves rapidly spreading throughout her body. Ghost chastised herself for letting herself get this nervous: It's just a game, and it's one day. It's not like I'm going to be left alone with Jake, and I have Juliette and Rooster if I need friends. I even have Phoenix. Deep breaths. Deep breaths...

They pulled into adjoining parking spots and strode over to the Daggers, who already tossed the football around. A familiar man stood to the side, chatting with Penny and Hondo. He beamed at the sight of Rooster and Juliette, hugging them when they approached. "Hey! Glad you two could make it. Who's your friend?"

"Mav, this is Annalise Blackwood, callsign Ghost," Juliette introduced proudly. "Ghost, this is Pete 'Maverick' Mitchell and Bernie 'Hondo' Coleman."

"It's an honor," Ghost said, shaking the men's hands but finding herself starstruck by Maverick. He'd been her idol for as long as she could remember after her mom told her stories about him. Ghost barely managed to say, "I've heard a lot about you, sir."

"Not sure if that's a good or bad thing," Maverick joked, but he studied her curiously. "Forgive me if I'm wrong, but are you related to Charlotte Blackwood by any chance?"

"Yes, sir," Ghost replied with a smile. "She's my mom."

"How is she?"

"Good, good. She lives in DC with my dad now and is still working with the Pentagon."

"Tell her I say hi, next time you speak to her."

"I will! So-" Ghost scanned the Daggers, trying to figure out if they were already playing the game- "what's dogfight football?"

"Glad you asked!" Maverick clapped his hands and dove into an explanation. It ended up being much simpler than Ghost thought it'd be, and she looked forward to playing until Hangman jogged up to them with the Daggers in tow, reminding her he'd be here the entire time. She kept her head in Maverick's direction but used her dark, reflective sunglasses to hide the fact her line of sight focused on Jake Seresin. Outside of their brief reunion in the Hard Deck, she hadn't given herself a chance to properly look at him, but she did now. Ghost couldn't help noticing his bulging biceps and rock-hard abs or the thin sheen of sweat glistening on his body and accentuating the perfection of his Adonis build. 

"Hey, Pops, we ready to-" Hangman stopped short at the sight of his long-time 'acquaintance.' "Ghost! What are you doing here?"

"Juliette and Phoenix invited me," Ghost responded, unsure how she managed to sound so calm when she felt anything but.

"Glad you could join us." He flashed her what appeared to be a genuine smile before turning to Maverick. "All right, Pops, we're ready to play. We picking teams?"

Maverick nodded. "We are. All right, captains today are-" Maverick lifted his phone and played a roulette-type game on his phone. It apparently chose the names for him. "Omaha and Coyote, you're captains. Let's see who your teammates will be."

Maverick hit the roulette again, assigning each person to a team. Hangman and Rooster ended up on opposing teams and egged each other on until the last name had been called. Ghost's name.

"You'll be on Coyote's team," Maverick said, clapping her shoulder. Ghost smiled but couldn't help the involuntary glance in Hangman's direction, who would be on her team. "You all ready?"

The group cheered and scrambled down to the beach. Juliette shuffled off to a shaded picnic bench with Penny and the dogs. Ghost trailed behind the Daggers, feeling slightly left out despite the mass group she found herself a part of. She hoped the sensation would disappear once they started playing, but people had always tended to forget about her, whether Ghost wanted them to or not. It was part of how she obtained her callsign, and while she lived up to it now with her skill as a stealth pilot, the truth behind its origin still got to her on occasion, like now.

Coyote and team huddled together; Ghost stood opposite Hangman, their heads nearly touching as the group devised a game plan. 

"All right, positions are as follows," Coyote said, "Hangman, you're fullback, and Ghost, you're halfback. Harvard, Phoenix, I want you two as defense. I'll be quarterback. Bob, Fritz, you're wide receivers."

Ghost and Hangman shared a look. It was thanks to Jake that she knew all she did about football between him being on the team both in high school and in college and having been scouted by a few NFL teams that he ultimately turned down to pursue his career as a pilot. She also knew the fullback's primary responsibility was protecting the halfback. Ghost wondered if Coyote assigned them these positions on purpose...

"Anything I should know about how the others play?" Ghost queried. "Anyone I need to watch out for?"

"Don't underestimate Maverick," Hangman replied immediately. "Pops can move. Rooster is fast but isn't too agile. Omaha is the opposite of that. Yale is speedy and agile but not great at catching. Halo is sneaky but is afraid to get tackled. Payback and Fanboy are a package deal, so if you see one, the other's not far behind, and they're great at defense."

Ghost nodded, and then Coyote came up with a game plan. After making eye contact with each member to confirm they understood, they broke apart and got into their respective positions. Ghost stood behind Hangman, hating herself for admiring his well-defined, muscular back. She barely heard Coyote yell "hike" before the game began. Ghost darted forward to him, trying to scan and understand the mayhem at the same time. She noticed a small break in the defense between Halo and Omaha. Hangman ran behind Coyote and faked grabbing the ball. In the blink of an eye, Ghost took the football instead and sprang forward, taking advantage of the gap she'd noticed earlier and bursting through it. Hangman chased after her, keeping Payback and Rooster at bay from gaining on Ghost as she cruised into the endzone. Hondo blew the whistle, alerting the teams to the swift touchdown.

"Now that's how you start off a game!" Coyote shouted, throwing his hands up proudly into the air. Ghost chucked the ball back toward him in a perfect spiral before jogging back to her team. On the way there, Rooster asked, "Where the hell did you learn how to play and throw like that?"

Taking one out of Jake's playbook, she said, "Old acquaintance."

Out of the corner of her eye, she saw Rooster's head turn toward Hangman, but thankfully, the aviator didn't prod. 

With the element of surprise gone for Ghost and eyes now trained on her after that touchdown, she never got another good chance to run the ball through like that. They switched up tactics to throwing the ball mostly. Ghost had fun tackling people, including an impressive takedown of Rooster before he hit the endzone. Hangman lifted his hand to high-five her for it, and not wanting to cause any scene, she returned it, albeit with a hard slap that left her hand stinging. 

Right before the game ended, Hangman scored a touchdown and made it known to the world, celebrating in a way Ghost could only describe as "hulking out." Every muscle popped out in definition in the process, and Ghost couldn't help but ogle. She hated how good he looked right now.

The Daggers retired to the picnic table where Penny sat. Juliette stood a little ways away, playing fetch with the dogs. Rooster jogged up behind her, wrapping his arms around her waist and gently lifting her belly. Ghost saw Juliette visibly relax and sink against him, closing her eyes in relief while he lifted the weight strain off her back that her growing belly caused. The couple waited for Raptor and Lightning to run back to them before they joined the group. Hangman gave up his seat for Juliette, who gladly accepted it.

"I'm grabbing drinks. Who wants what?" Coyote asked, pulling out his phone and pretending to take orders like a waiter. "Got it. I'll be right back."

"I'll help," Ghost offered, deciding a reprieve from the beating sun would be welcome. 

"I'll join. Don't think you two have enough hands to carry the drinks for everyone," Hangman said, strutting over to her.

"Coyote has big hands, so I think we're fine."

"Appreciate it," Coyote remarked, winking appreciatively at her innuendo. She grabbed her phone from her bag and followed him into the Hard Deck, Hangman on her heels. The trio went behind the bar and started grabbing the drinks, although none of them could find the lemonade Juliette requested.

"Might be in the back. I'll go check," Coyote said. He swiftly disappeared to the back room before either Hangman or Ghost could argue.

"That was subtle," Hangman remarked, shooting Ghost an amused grin, which she ignored. She wanted to get away from Jake Seresin as quickly as possible before she gave in to the temptation to talk to him. If Ghost did, all the pent-up anger, and more importantly, the pent-up betrayal and hurt, risked boiling over. She intended to have fun today, and fighting with him would spoil that plan. Of course, Hangman was never one to back down, and he sighed at her silence. "Still not talking to me?"

"No," she replied shortly.

"You just did."

"Shut up."

"Annie-"

"Don't call me that," Ghost snapped defensively, heart-wrenching at the affectionate nickname she'd only ever allowed him to call her. It'd been so long since she'd heard it, and it made the nostalgia of their relationship burst into her mind, threatening to make her throw caution to the wind and cause her to forgive him for everything. Ghost quickly reminded herself that if she let him in again, he'd only hurt her again, sooner or later.

"Annalise, I know now's not the time to talk-"

"At least we can agree on something."

"-but I do want to. It's been almost six years. Surely-" he stopped short, pausing for a moment- "Why is Kyle Peterson calling you?"

Ghost groaned inwardly, forgetting she'd placed her phone on the counter in full view for anyone to see incoming calls or texts. "Not that it's any of your business, but he's an ex. Of sorts."

"You- you dated Kyle Peterson?" Hangman demanded, miffed. "Do I need to remind you what a dickhead he was to us-"

"No, you don't," Ghost interrupted shortly, standing with beer bottles in hand and staring him down. "He was an asshole in high school. Most teenagers are, but I know he was worse because he was friends with Nick."

"Yeah, so what possessed you to date him?" 

"I ran into him at the store when I returned to Texas a month ago, and he started chatting to me. He doesn't hang out with Nick anymore, and he apologized for being such a dick to us in high school. He acted like he changed, so I accepted the date when he asked me out. It went on for about a month before I realized he hadn't changed at all and dumped him. He's not taking it well and has been calling me non-stop to try and win me over. I'm ignoring him. That's all. The only reason I still have his number in my phone is to know when he's calling so I can ignore him."

Hangman glowered at Ghost, although whether it was directed at her or at Kyle, she couldn't quite tell. The buzzing of the phone had stopped, but a few seconds later, it started back up again. "Do you want me to stop him for you?"

"No, it's fine. He'll get the message sooner or later. Besides, I don't want to owe you any favors."

Hangman's narrowed eyes darted to the phone. "Then do me a favor and let me handle him."

"No. I don't want you owing me any favors either."

"Don't be stubborn-"

"I'm not. I don't want you getting involved and aggravating the situation. Sometimes silence is the best solution."

Hangman chuckled humorlessly. "You'd know all about silence."

"You're one to talk," Ghost retorted, setting the beer bottles down to swipe her phone off the counter. "You know, I said I didn't want to talk to you and look what's happened: I talked to you, and now I'm in a bad mood. This is exactly what I knew would happen."

"I don't want to fight with you, Ghost," Hangman said softly, his green eyes startlingly vulnerable. "I just-"

"I found it!" Coyote declared victoriously, lifting a glass bottle of lemonade. His cheerfulness faded when he saw the expressions of his friends. "Am I interrupting something?"

"Only the conversation you'd expect for leaving us alone," Ghost responded, grabbing the beer bottles. "I'll see you outside."

Going against every nerve in her body screaming at her to abort the mission and escape the get-together with the Daggers, she wouldn't go yet. She wanted to hang out with Juliette and Rooster some more before heading home. It'd been too long since she'd seen her friends, and no one would come between that. Besides, what's the worst that could happen if she stayed?

Tell us a little about Haru!

So ya'll noticed that, ahah! Well, he is a long time original character of mine! I'm glad you guys are interested in him, I have actually been thinking about implementing him onto the blog--although he is VERY different from Robin! More below!

Where to begin... Haruko Nakasone is the eldest son of a Japanese man who immigrated to the US and New Orleans woman, Ren Nakasone and Yvonne Rillieux. He has a sister who is 3 years his junior, Hina--and grew up in a small port town outside of the city. His family dynamic was very close and nuclear, although his father would often travel for business, Yvonne's parents were over foten to help with the house, and Haru took up cooking at a semi-young age. He had a fairly standard childhood, playing with local children and attending school, as well as learning to hunt with his grandfather at the age of 10. He received a German Shepherd puppy at the age of 12 after begging his mother like a complete brat, he named her Bonnie.

However when he entered middleschool his town was flipped onto its head as a string of murders began to rip suburbia apart, the victims ranging from adults to children. A strict curfew was placed over time and naturally, being a teenager, Haru decided one day to ignore this. He met a few friends at the football fields of his school to try alcohol for the first time, and subsequently knocked out under the bleachers after taking too many shots of fireball. He woke up to everyone having left, and himself alone while the sunset lower in the sky. Haru was quick to grab his stuff and book it home, but he was met with a very standard looking man, who Haru recognized as one of the workers from the local grocery store, and he greeted him, hoping to get a ride back home, only to realize that was not going to happen.

Haru doesn't really remember what happened in the following moments but his consciousness returned to him he was sitting over the man with his own hands bloody, realizing he was bleeding from his stomach. He called 911 and was transported to the hospital, and while they stablized him, he saw the body put into the bag and zipped up for good. Haru struggled with the repercussions of his actions and slowly became more and more of a loner after rumors spread around his school which eventually fell off once he entered highschool. Although as the rumors fell away he couldn't push away the trauma of what happened and grappled with himself to try and figure out what happened and why he felt so elated after. The answer was he was scared and acted out of defense and that's literally it but he's too wrapped up in "I wasn't scared" to accept it. He chased that high and ended up dabbling in illicit affairs as well as joining a shitty fight club that he could physically remove his stress when the memory relapsed. He took up hunting more and more as well.

Repression doesn't help anything though and when he was finally in college in the city, for a biology degree he did not want, Haru ended up failing most of his classes and used his tuition money for more illicit affairs--and dropped out. After nearly crashing his car, he finally began to sober up and put those things behind him, but the spark from his youth still called out, and eventually he used his shooting lessons for something more lucrative. In order to pay his parents back, since he made his mother cry and can't forgive himself for it, he began to take hit jobs around the city for the every day man instead of the mob--he refuses to get involved in that nonsense. Eventually he gained enough money to pay his mother back and open a tattoo shop on main street, finally falling into a semblance of happiness.

He is currently 25 years of age, 178cm, and lives alone with his dog, Bonnie--who is now 13 years old and somewhat struggling with the stairs of his apartment building. Haru picks her up and carries her up and down 5 flights of stairs so she can go on her old lady walks and go potty, and generally spoils her. His days consist of tattoo appointments with Bonnie in the shop, lounging on her doggy bed, before it closes at 6pm. Most days he goes back home and cooks dinner with a standard documentary on, he still drinks daily and he also smokes cannabis--but has a tight control on what he actually needs to take. However on hit days, he takes Bonnie home before changing into tactical gear so he can snipe his target without worry. He has burned his fingerprints just in case, and takes all types of jobs--sometimes even doing them for free if he thinks the hit deserves it.

He works out with weights a few times per week, takes self defense classes, and jogs daily; keeping strong not only for his work/Bonnie, but because he secretly is still horrified of the past sneaking up on him despite it being 6 feet under ground. He has a motorcycle that he maintains himself with lessons he learned from his grandfather, and owns two Berettas along with his (usually disassembled) CheyTac M200. He can probably beat most people up, although he doesn't really engage in random acts of violence anymore and prefers to just have his simple little life with his dog. He's panromantic/pansexual and is surprisingly friendly despite his resting bitchface and semi-rude behavior. Haru also has a sleeve (the design of which I won't post here because this is already very long) as well as a tatto on his left hand--he is ambidextrous and very flexible. He has 3 stab scars on his stomach and side from the attack, and views them as a badge of honor. 

As for implementing him into the blog--it HAS been a thought I've been wiggling around in my brain. I could see him integrating into Zaun pretty easily, and in DBD--definitely a survivor because he just SCREAMS Final-Girl-Energy (and because I need him to kick Frank or Danny or BOTH in the dick). Either way, if you DO want to ask him questions or send prompts, that's all well, it'll help me gage if people would want to interact with him, since, as I said, he's very different from Robin.

OC Creation Asks: 1, 3, 13, and 19 for all

[ questions about creating your ocs ]

1: What was the first element of your OC that you remember considering (name, appearance, backstory, etc.)? 

Reed: I made him in-game first. As far as actual character elements go though, the first element I worked with after making him an oc was his whole thing with Dogmeat/Margot. At the time that this was all going on, I had been working with my dog’s trainer to potentially start IGP/bitesports- obviously she’s been washed since then, but I learned a ton about what’s involved in that type of work. Then I went off and played my new FO4 save, and snatched up Dogmeat because why wouldn’t I, and started questioning how in the fuck this random stray dog is able to reliably do protection work. Also why is there a purebred german shepherd just sitting here at a gas station, 200+ years after the end of the world? It obviously got out of control after that and now I have a whole alt startup for my sole + he has his own unique synthetic dog as a replacement for Dogmeat.

Mercy: Backstory for sure- I already had her appearance, name, and personality worked out since they were all yoinked from her RDR2 version. I had a few loose details from Reed & Delta’s backstories to work with, and I had to figure out how to get her from 2077 to 2281 and then across the continental US by 2288, so it was a lot of me just piecing things together and filling in gaps.

Delta: Also backstory- I yoinked their appearance from Mercy for obvious reasons, and a good portion of their personality is just the opposite of Mercy’s so that was also easy to work out. I’m still fleshing out their earlier backstory, which has been hard because it’s all Institute nonsense, but I’ve at least got a solid idea of what they’re up to a few years before their storyline with Reed starts up.

3: How did you choose their name?

Delta’s name is in kind of a similar area as the other two- I wanted something starting with a D to coordinate with their synth designation, and I wanted something that sounded like more of an alias or nickname than an actual name. It ended up suiting them really well

13: How far past the canon events that take place in their world have you extended their story, if at all? 

I loosely have Reed & Mercy’s storylines worked out for a few years post-canon, and have a few post-canon AUs tacked on. So their ✨official✨ storyline is they leave the Commonwealth together after wrapping up everything Mercy went there for, and they head south for D.C. That’s as far as I’ve gotten with it, they’re both drifters at that point so they can do whatever they want. As far as AUs go: I have one where they both die because of course I do. Reed’s killed by BoS remnants pretty shortly after his storyline ends, & a year or two after that Mercy goes feral from excessive radiation exposure and later dies. I’d like to play around with an AU or something where they both stay in the Commonwealth and find somewhere permanent to live, but that’d be hard to do with Reed since he’s awful and won’t settle down

I’ve played around with the idea of Delta leaving the Commonwealth and either moving to Acadia or heading West as a trader, but tbh they’re so well established there that I don’t think they’d willingly leave.

19: What is your favorite fact about your OC?

Reed: He steals Quinlan’s cat while planting explosives on the Prydwen.

Mercy: She can get really into gardening and hydroponics when she’s settled down somewhere.

Delta: They’re a stray collector, they just take in all of the sad little creatures whenever they turn up. Hence how they ended up with like 8 cats and Reed.

so basically for the owl house characters it’s just going to be which type of magic they have maybe of who i think they resemble in the series and vice versa!

the owl house as the dragon prince:

Luz

is obviously Callum in the sense that they are both the main character, kind of childlike, and want to learn magic when it is said for it to be impossible for humans

ends up learning sky magic like Callum does

Amity

i’m obsessed with the idea of her being Rayla, main character’s enemy turned love interest, badass, parent issues, great hair

obviously moon magic since i just feel like it fits and she has that moon necklace

Willow

i don’t really know who she would be in the dragon prince universe tbh

earth magic bc plants are kind of part of earth. idk if she would be an earthblood elf tho. i know there are other types of earth elves but it hasn’t been said what they are yet

Gus

he’s Ezran all the way bc he’s younger than everyone else and gets underestimated all the time, but is actually more than capable and was forced to grow up sooner than everyone else

obviously he would do moon magic and would specifically be an illusionist

Hunter

Soren!!! both of them are my favorite blond white boys, and very skilled in hand to hand combat, have an abusive father figure (Viren and Belos) that they later got away from

I also understand that the cat hybrid thing is kinda overdone. Dogs also have scruffs if you want to fit it into the neck idea? I like yoongi as a Doberman because Dobermans are just really sleek and elegant sort of guard dogs. They’re also more speed than strength which I think aligns with yoongi. Although they’re still very strong O_o and Dobermans are not hunting dogs, but watch dogs so they’re more protective than offensive.

I think mc would be a Belgian Malinois. They’re very similar to German Shepards and they’re very intelligent. They’re leaner and compared to shepherds but they’re less popular also compared to shepherds which may fit with her whole outcast sort of vibe I get from her. They’re also very protective and territorial so that could also explain how tough and defensive she is, but once you train them/get to know them, they’re very loyal.

The thing about hybrid aus I’ve read is that if it’s a variation of a dog, it usually dives into the omegaverse territory.

Unless the universe you make is entirely just different hybrids coexisting equally? But recently I’ve been watching Bluey and I don’t know how I feel about combining my fanfic universe with a children show— I think the best hybrid breed for them entirely depends on what the universe for hybrids is like! Is it divided by predators vs prey? Is it equal coexistence? Is it an internal hierarchy like omega versus alpha is?

And fun fact: I’ve never really liked cat girls/boys or other hybrids for the matter! I think cat girls and boys are pretty, but often times I’ve read a fic or played a game or watched an anime where the hybrid gets infantilized and they’re stupid like a child, but sexualized like any other character if not more??? Yeah, please don’t do that with this au…

So for this one you can apparently answer the 15 questions either as yourself or as one of your OCs. I've decided to respond as myself as I'm in the midst on NaNoWriMo and still getting to know my new OCs.

Are you named after anyone?

Yes! I'm named after a character in a book (don't ask me which book my parents don't remember).

2. When was the last time you cried?

Yesterday. I cry pretty frequently, tears just come very quickly for me and I feel emotions quite intensely. The reason for my crying was because I was emotionally moved whilst watching the latest One Piece episode.

3. Do you have kids?

I have a fur-child, does that count? Her name is Miley and she's an Alaskan Malamute cross who I rescued as a puppy. My partner and I are planning on having human children in the future but currently we don't.

4. Do you use sarcasm?

Yes, sometimes.

5. What is the first thing you notice about others?

Oh that's tough, generally it changes from person to person. Usually it's facially orientated but it can be other aspects. If someone has fun earrings I'll notice those first, if they have tattoos, piercings, cool clothing. Little signifiers of personality, that's what I notice first.

6. What's your eye colour?

I used to describe my eyes as kind of mud brown but they're actually quite pretty the closer you get. From a distance a dark walnut brown, up close more of a sepia or russet brown. Looking them closely in my hand mirror they kind of make me think of the crystal Tiger's eye.

7. Scary stories or happy endings?

A bit of both, I like scary stories with happy endings. But if I have to choose I'll probably lean more towards happy endings.

8. Any special talents?

No, I am decidedly very untalented... Although I can read tarot cards, I don't read them very often (I don't self-read) but the times that I have my friends have said my predictions were fairly accurate. I'd love to believe that means I'm a little psychic but it's probably just luck and guiding intuition from how well I know the people I was reading for.

9. Where were you born?

It's no secret I was born in Darwin, Northern Territory, Australia.

10. What are your hobbies?

Reading, writing, playing video games. I also enjoy walking with my dog, volunteering, researching different mythologies and history. I've dabbled with knitting, though it's taking me a long time to finish a single project because I keep forgetting about it.

11. Do you have any pets?

As mentioned before I have an Alaskan Malamute cross called Miley. My brother also has a dog, she's an Akita Inu cross German Shepherd called Akela.

12. What sports do you play/have played?

I am not a sporty person. I've done sports carnivals, taken martial arts classes, and I participated in weekly sporting events at University as part of our Res Wars (friendly competition between the different residential buildings). But I've never really played any particular sport.

13. How tall are you?

Uhh, I always forget my height. I'm about 5'2, so somewhere around the 157-160cm range I believe. Just tall enough to reach the top of my bookshelf, not tall enough to reach the back of the top cupboards in the kitchen.

14. Favourite subject in school?

English or history in high school. Criminal Profiling at University (it was a super fun and informative, I took it as an elective).

15. Dream Job?

Being a full-time author but that requires a lot of luck along with a lot of work. For now I'm pretty happy with the job I recently started working sales in a jewellery store, I'm learning a lot of fascinating things and have super nice coworkers. Still one day it'd be nice if my books provided me a stable income.

A headshot roster of everyone in Pistol's band! This story is one I've had for a while that I've really wanted to touch up on because I love my babies so much!

Below the read more is a description of each character!

Darius is from a different really old story of mine that. I repurposed him for this! He is a blind, albino German Shepherd with vocal chords like no other. He is the youngest member of the band. His sister Diana's disappearance is what sparks the main story to start.

Pistol is pretty much the main character. He's the bassist who used to date Sepher before he turned into a huge ass and got kicked out. Pistol is currently in college but the main story takes place when he comes home to visit. His original designer is my friend Sunday! He wasn't too close to Diana, but she taught him how to ride a skateboard. Starting the band was his idea.

Sepher was the lead guitarist before he turned into a huge asshole and got kicked out by Gwen. He ends up kind of becoming an antagonist but is actually a victim of the true antagonist. His original designer is my girlfriend Synth! He was very close friends with Diana, as she got him through some very hard times.

Gwen is a tall, scary, very loving trans woman who acts as the mom of the group. She helps everyone out as best she can, often leading to not helping herself, and can be very intimidating when she wants to. Diana helped Gwen through her transition, so they were close as well. Her original designer is my friend Sunday! She is the oldest band member.

Aspen is a fictional, non-venomous snake species that I made because I liked the color ideas. He auditions for the band and is accepted after Sepher is kicked out. Everyone seems to like him not only for his skill with a guitar, but also his determination to get the band on their feet and playing actual gigs. Gwen also takes a liking to him for other reasons♡ He is the newest member of the band.

Rust is a soft hearted cow who will find the good in anyone they meet. Ever. They're a true pacifist and even after Sepher is kicked out of the band, they find reasons to take pity on him, sometimes leading to their own detriment. Everyone has a non-spoken rule to never be mean to Rust. They weren't particularly close to Diana, but wanted to help as much as they possibly could when they heard about her disappearance. Rust is designed and currently owned by my friend Elliot.

1. Does your character have good aim?

Not exactly, but she did manage to plant a few bullets in the 'right' places... I don't count her only head shot at point blank with a rifle. Even though she almost killed Lawrence too. 😰😱

3. Does your character prefer to work in silence or with noise and of what kind?

She loves calm and cosy ambience but, to work, she'd rather work with music (earpods or not), audiobook, or a film on TV than in full silence because it kinda makes her nervous and she gets more easily distracted by noises around her.

6. Who did your character look up to as a child?

Her grand-parents were very important to her and she's grateful to still have them all in her life in her present day. But she also had a strong influence from Tolkien's characters and other kinds of characters from video games she played growing up. She kinda loved the adventurous and daring type… while she definitely wasn't that herself and didn't exactly long for that type of life either. She'd relate more to Hobbits and their love for an orderly home and safety.

15. Did your character ever want to be a cowboy?

Too bad for her if she didn't… 👀 (spoiler: she never ever thought about that before working in the park, even though she loved cowboy movies and stories.)

17. How petty is your character?

On a scale of 0 to 10, she'd be at 11.

24. What is your character’s opinions on squirrels?

They're cute and squeaky, and fun to feed by hand in a park!! Her dog's opinion, however... 👀🗡💥

30. How independent was your character as a teen?

She didn't exactly had a choice in the matter. Her parents were so focused on her little sister that they somewhat (emotionally) neglected her a little bit. She was the big sister, you see?! So she was a big girl who didn't need her parents and hugs and stuff like that as much are her sister who was a baby and— they only are five years apart, my dudes!! Even your elder daughter is still a baby!!! 😲 Her parents know better now, but still, the damage is done.

41. Do other people around your character dictate their life or do they get to choose for themselves?

Some times in her life yes, but not always, and never anything crushing or life threatening… Not until she got caught by her boss messing with corporate propriety and their code 👀

86. Is your character’s fear reaction to fight, flight, or freeze?

A bit of each, actually. She'd fight against enemies, could run under heavy fire to save her friend or flight when she knows she can't win and have only herself to take care of… but freeze to death in social interactions and stranger danger.

108. Are any of your characters dogs?

*spoiler* Astro, the very toothy fluffy german shepherd who hate squirrels with a passion. *spoiler*

Gingerbread man as golem

I would like to write a character who is Jewish and uses a Golem. She's based on the D&D class of the artificer which looks magic but isn't, because they produce all their effects with inventions, like the "any sufficiently advanced technology is indistinguishable from magic" quote. Her story is that her very Jewish town was under attack from a terrible monster when she was little. Her Rabbis made a Golem to protect the town, and it succeeded but was torn to pieces in the process. She was fascinated by the Golem and as a kid didn't see a big difference between it's sentience and person's so was really thankful for its sacrifice like you would a person's sacrificing their life for you. They thought all the pieces had been devoured by the monster before it died, but she went looking and found the piece used to animate the Golem, which she, kinda misunderstanding called its "heart". She kept the piece and grew up to be an incredibly skilled cook, specialising as a baker in the town. I imagine she would make a lot of really good food for the Jewish holidays, or to break fasts on ones like Yom Kippur or Tish'abav. But she also made a town specific holiday to honour the Golem's sacrifice and the town still being alive, because I feel "we are not dead woo" is a big theme for Jewish holidays from my research, so it could fit, for which she invented ginger bread men to be the golem, and gave them little "hearts" of fruit or honey, and you're meant to eat them limb by limb like the beast did before eating the heart. This would be the inspiration for using the "heart" piece later to make her own giant gingerbread Golem to help her save the world.

These are my questions 1) would it be considered bad or disrespectful for someone who isn't a Rabbi to make a Golem, or is this method of taking an animating piece someone else made disrespectful? 2) Her journey will take her far from her town and her Jewish family and friends and she will likely travel with gentiles. Would it be disrespectful for a Golem to be used to protect a lot of gentiles and one Jew in the course of saving the world? I don't want to fall into the stereotype of someone putting all their effort into valuing and protecting very specifically the group that in real life is oppressive to them. 3) While she is not using magic and is actually mimicking its effects with technology she invents, is this drawing too close to the line of "magical Jew"? 4) I like to "play test" my characters in ttrpgs to really get a feel for them before I write. Would it be disrespectful to play a Jewish character when I am a gentile, and would it be disrespectful to play a Jewish character in a setting where there are demonstrably real gods other than the one of Judaism?

I really like this character idea and I think it's cute and fun and rooted in Jewish culture but I really want to make sure it's respectful and as good as I, a gentile researching on the internet, thinks it is. Thanks so much! Have a nice day!

My answer to this is very complicated because there are things I both like and do not like about this premise. First of all, I love the idea of a cookie golem, and I'm even imagining the magic word that brings him to life (EMET/truth) would be written in icing. And I'm okay with the part about how she found a piece of the old golem and used it to build a new golem, because that makes sense for a golem made from a baked good when you think about how people use sourdough starter to make a new batch of sourdough.

However, here are the thing that make me cock my head to the side like my little sister's German shepherd:

1. re: "magical Jew" - that's not a trope I've ever heard of. Remember, marginalized groups don't receive identical disrespect across the board. It is indeed a trope to use Black people or disabled people as supernatural plot devices who exist only to further the stories of white main characters or able-bodied main characters. But I can't say as I've ever seen anyone using Jewishness that way. Usually if we are someone's one-dimensional plot device it's as someone's lawyer, fixer, "money guy", etc, not a supernatural force. So this isn't something you have to worry about.

2. I have a certain level of discomfort with you playing as a Jewish character just because playacting as a marginalized culture you're not part of strikes me as off, but I understand that that's how you gain insight into a character you're about to write so it's more of a writing exercise than anything else. (I wonder if D&D regulars from marginalized groups have written about this -- I've only played a few times casually with family so if I did run into this type of discussion in my social justice reading I wouldn't have absorbed it. If anyone is curious I played first as Captain Werewolf, and then switched to playing as Cinnamon Blade because lawful good was too hard. :P )

3. I would prefer you omit the detail about eating the cookies piece by piece symbolically, for two reasons: a. it unintentionally evokes Communion by having appreciative people consume a baked good symbolic of an entity who sacrificed his life for theirs, and b. focusing on the details of flesh consumption reminds me too much of Blood Libel (yes, a gingerbread man is in the shape of a person but how many of us actually think about it literally, the way this act would cause?)

As to your first question: I'm fine with her making a golem even though she's just a rando. Second question: I see what you're saying and maybe it could be more okay if it's really clear how well these gentile folks are treating her? And questions three and four are answered above.

I really do love the idea of a giant gingerbread man golem. Cookie golem T_T <3

I would like to second Shira’s point about not ripping apart the gingerbread cookies. I honestly would prefer they were used as decoration, and other cookies eaten instead, since that part just feels so not-Jewish to me, but I don’t have golem-specific issues other than that. It seems like you have already been doing a lot of research, which is appreciated.

As far as the ttrpg/DnD aspect… I bounce back and forth on the topic of playing characters that are so very different from our experiences, other than in fantasy-related ways. However, I am aware that a lot of people will play with, and experiment with gender in game, and learn something about themselves in the process (the number of trans players of ttrpgs who tried out their gender in game before they were out is high). It’s different with Judaism, and even more significantly different when it comes to things you can’t convert into, like various actual, real-world races. But because people do sometimes experience growth from experiences like this, I’m hesitant to dissuade players completely. I do urge you to, at a minimum, bring the same care, research, and willingness to learn, that you brought to this question.

At first I was confused by this part:

But then you really got me thinking about different types of Jewish holidays and how they come about, so thank you for that!

Because it’s often the little details that either make a story super powerful or kind of nonsensical, I think it would be a good idea to decide what type of holiday is being created here:

A full-blown chag with restrictions on labour and halachic obligations? These are commanded in Torah and new ones can’t be added.

A minor yom tov with halachic obligations but no restrictions? These were instituted by the rabbis prior to the destruction of the Temple, so again new ones can’t be added.

A public holiday or equivalent? This would usually be declared by the Knesset in Israel, and filter to the rest of the Jewish world from there.

A community-based yom tov with specific customs only for people in the know, such as certain Chasidic groups celebrating the birthdays of their deceased leaders? I asked around, but no one can really tell me how these holidays get started, which is probably a good indication that they arise quite organically from a group of people who all just feel that it should be celebrated. Probably not created by a single person, as such.

Something she runs from her bakery, not religion-based, but more like a day of doing special products and deals the way many small businesses do on their anniversary?

Now, if the people of a modern-day town were actually saved by a real live Golem, that would arguably be the most overt miracle for many generations, so there would be a decent chance of options 3 and/or 4 happening. It’s entirely plausible that there could be special foods for this day that become a tradition, including Golem cookies. People who directly benefited might also return to the site where the Golem fought the monster and recite the prayer, ‘Blessed is Hashem, Master of the Universe, Who performed a miracle for me in this place.’

Alternatively, if it’s important that your MC created the holiday, something like option 5 might be the best. Hopefully this will still fulfil what you need: you describe her as incredibly skilled, so I can imagine the day when she goes all out on the Golem cookies being one of the most exciting events of the year for the townspeople, just because her baking is that good. Plus, they already have a personal stake in the Golem’s sacrifice, so I definitely think it could be a thing without being an official holiday. Also, if she is outside of an all-Jewish environment, don’t forget that she would have to decide whether to commemorate the anniversary in the Hebrew calendar or the local one.

Coming back to the cookies, sorry if we’re getting a little repetitive on this point! But I don’t see the cookies being torn limb from limb as part of a celebration. First of all, this doesn’t sound like a very celebratory thing to do, to say the least. Can you imagine explaining that to a three-year-old on their first Yom HaGolem? They would be terrified! (I don’t read this suggestion as accidental anti-Semitism so much as getting carried away with a metaphor, which I’m sure as writers we have all done!)

But also, it’s worth pointing out that our commemorative foods aren’t usually that literal. If you think about hamantaschen, maror, or apple in honey, they’re all symbols. That’s not to say that having Golem-shaped cookies is a problem, as this sounds like just a bit of fun that the MC is having and not something that is directly at odds with Judaism or Jewish culture. But it’s worth bearing in mind that the more literal you go from there in terms of tying the cookies to the event they commemorate, the less culturally aligned your holiday food becomes.

Finally, about the Golem protecting non-Jewish people: I like this idea! There’s a stereotype that we only use whatever is at our disposal to help ourselves and other Jewish people, so a Golem being created by Jews but helping others as well is a big plus for me. Of course, as has already been pointed out, this would be an odd choice if her Saving The World team were anti-Semitic or otherwise disrespectful to her/her community, but I don’t think you were headed that way!
