“I want to be a vet” is a common childhood dream… but I’m curious just how widespread it is!

Prince boarded with us over the weekend and we loved having him! He is a 12 week old puppy and is so adorable, sweet, playful, curious, and silly. We can’t wait to see him again in a few months!

I finished my npl and placement yesterday so here’s free vet advice that everyone asks for
Insure your pets, in dogs and cats it is 100% worth it. And try to get to cover for the highest amount that you can afford. I can go into more detail about pet insurance if you want
Most flea treatment that contains ‘fipronil’ will not work, fleas have become immune to it. Often times only prescription flea medications will work or a seresto collar
If your dog is going in for a planned surgery, bath them the day before, make sure they go to the toilet the morning of and if your feeling like really making your vet nurses happy, cut their beard as short as possible.
Don’t breed your pet if you cannot afford a caesarean, ask for an estimate for one at your local and out of ours vets
If your male cat is constantly trying to pee but can’t, that is an emergency you need to take him to the vet straight away
If your rabbit or guinea pig stops eating or pooping that is an emergency you need to take them to the vet
If you have a deep chested dog and their stomach is swollen, they cannot lie down / rest, they’re salivating a lot and unsuccessfully trying to vomit, this could be an emergency you need to take them to the vet straight away
Euthanasia can be a kindness to some animals, I promis your pet isn’t angry at you for getting them put to sleep, they’re out of pain (mental or physical) now and you did the right thing
If your debating whether or not your pet needs to see a vet, just ring up and ask your vets
Your pet being overweight can be as dangerous for their health as them being underweight, check body condition scores and ask your vet nurse for weight advice if your not sure
H fronted dog harnesses such as Julius k9 harnesses can damage your dogs shoulders, especially if they pull a lot. Y fronted ones are safer.
Don’t get a new pet if you cannot afford routine vet bills, if you don’t have at least £100 you can spare for your pet to see the vet, you cannot afford that pet.
Vaccinate your pets, every year.
Try to have some sort of good dental health routine for your pet, dental sticks now and then don’t work. Enzymic toothpaste, plaque off, aqua dent, hills T/D do work.
Learn what pain looks like in your pet, search Glasgow pain score or ‘species’ grimace scale for more info. Remember, if you would be in pain in your pets condition, they are in pain and need prescribed pain relief.
Don’t give pets human over the counter medication unless you have specific instructions from your vet to do so. So many human medications can be toxic to pets.

Goodbye Freddie
I'd known you since you were a baby, only 3 short years ago.
You were a galloping, limber, goofball of a puppy.
Today you weren't able to greet us at the door; and thats okay.
Your body was sunken with bones reaching out to greet me instead. Your illness had taken so much of you, but not all. You gave us a few hard thumps of your tail and for that I am grateful.
Your breathing was heavy and loud. Urgent and rapid. I still can't decide which broke my heart first. You, or your parents inconsolable cries for you.
Your parents were ready. As ready as anyone can ever be in situation such as this.
And I'll never forget the sunlight pouring in from the bedroom window. Filling the entire room with a burst of light and undeniable warmth.
And I'll never forget, how quiet it all became.

This could be me. This could be one of my colleagues, one of my classmates, one of my friends. It’s understandable that the original owner is upset over losing her pet, but what she’s done in retaliation is despicable, as is the news station that ran this story smearing our profession. Veterinary professionals should be able to go to work without facing graphic threats of violence against them and their families in return for saving a life in an impossible situation. You wonder why veterinarians and their support staff have such obscenely high rates of depression and suicide? This is why.
If you have a pet, I’m begging you to come up with a financial plan for their veterinary care. Get pet insurance (especially if you’re getting a new puppy or kitten). Start an emergency fund. Have a credit card set aside specifically for this kind of situation. Apply to CareCredit or a charitable fund like the University of Tennessee’s AlignCare if you find yourself unable to cover a bill. Most people don’t have immediate access to $10,000 (which is a reasonable price for the intense level of care this puppy required), so you have to have a plan. And don’t go buy an expensive purebred puppy and then claim you don’t have any money for vet care.
Be kind to your veterinarian. We are hundreds of thousands of dollars in debt from our education while making far less than our human healthcare counterparts. If we were in it for the money, we would have chosen any other career.

Well I had a first tonight. Never ever thought I’d have this sort of thing happen.
I was Terrified of a puppy….(keep in mind I’m used to working with aggressive breeds from my past job. Handled police K9s in the past as well) This poor sweet couple got misled by the shelter and was given, as first time dog owners, an Anatolian pup. 12 weeks old, and clear signs the poor pup isn’t wired right. Extremely aggressive, going after the owners, the doctor, and me the tech. You could see it in his eyes that something was just lacking in his brain. The poor wife was terrified. Clearly something genetic at play. The poor husbands hands covered in bit marks, and not your playfully puppy got to worked up makes. After a long talk, they decided, with our full support, to return the dog to the shelter and get something that fits their lifestyle better. Not their fault the pup was like this, it was not a lack of training
It was the lack of body language that frightened me. There was no clue when his switch would flip, no predicting a bite. No warning. Just, teeth.
No owner should be terrified of their own dog. I felt so bad for them. I was really shocked that the shelter had let this pup go, cause they have a pretty good track record of placing dogs.
We are a fear free practice and this broke our hearts. We know that puppy is most likely going to be a behavioral euth in the future. We can’t save them all, but we try.
