I've seen this post floating around many Facebook groups for the last few months, and I cannot stress how angry it makes me. Because it is 100% bullshit.
The topic of owners who don't feel able to stay with their pets at the end of their lives for whatever reason is a hot one, and some people will insist there is no excuse for not being present - but there are many reason, not least trauma, phobia, PTSD from previous losses, etc. It is no one's place to judge someone's personal capabilities. And I absolutely reject the suggestion that 90% of owners do not stay with their pet - that is absolutely false.
What upsets me most about this post is the suggestion that animals are "frantic" during their last moments, and that us as veterinary staff would allow this to be the case. Yes, some animals are distressed to be apart from their owners. But those animals are never briskly put down in a state of panic. My colleagues and I go to great lengths to make all of our patients as comfortable and peaceful as possible at the end. Animals without owners are given as many hugs, treats, kind words, love and care as any other. I cannot count how many dogs and cats I have held in my arms and spoken calming words to as they passed. I have had a dog collapse on me because I held him up so he could bury his nose in a treat jar as the drugs were injected. To suggest that we would EVER allow an animal to pass whilst "frantically looking around" is deeply insulting.
Please, if you read any posts like this, do not believe them. Veterinary staff have enough problems with mental health and abuse without this untrue bullshit being floated around.
I just really needed to get this off my chest.

I love and will always be grateful to the on-the-job trained techs who have taught me over the years, but working in my teaching hospital over the past few weeks with such a high proportion of registered veterinary technicians (several of whom have their VTS!) has been absolutely incredible.
RVTs (or LVTs, CVTs, registered vet nurses, whatever your title may be wherever you are), I love you so much and I am so sorry for everything you have to put up with. Your profession is invaluable and deserves the pay and respect owed to nurses.

snake x-rays anyone?
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Say hello to Noodle, my almost 19-year-old lavender zigzag corn snake. Last fed 3 weeks ago, and in the last four days or so started getting a firm lump 4" or so cranial to his cloaca. Getting bloated cranial to the lump, yadda yadda, only able to pass a couple dime-sized urates, and only after effort. He's easily exhausted and generally just not feeling good. Been getting warm water soaks nightly to no avail. He has an appointment with his vet on Wednesday. I did these rads today at the clinic I work at, but we work with cats so we have no idea wtf we're seeing or even really how to x-ray a snake :D. Yes he's backed up but the question is whyyyyy and I won't get an answer until Wednesday. Bleh.

I returned from maternity leave, and I’m so happy to be back with my babies / patients! I love my job 💕 🩺
SN: I can’t believe I’m going to obtain my doctor of veterinary medicine degree in two years… I have been working so hard for the last eight years and I’m finally almost done! This journey has been crazy and hard as hell but it’s so worth it and I’m so glad I can give my son a beautiful life! 💙🙏🏼

Okay only three requests to go after this one I promise 😂
Could you do a moodboard for Bob when he’s a vet/vet nurse/ working with animals.
Thanks Fern 💜

“How could you not love this face?”
Jess! I had way too much fun making this, Bob would be a natural when it comes to animals, both in their handling and when it comes to reading them. Vet Nurse Bob is definitely going to be the reason the office he works at is so popular with women, because how could he not be?
Find the completed moodboards here!

An encounter during one of my consults this morning with a mother and daughter (who looked about 4 years old):
Owner: "If you don't mind, my daughter has a question for you, she's been wanting to ask it all week"
Me: "Sure, what is it?"
4 year old, dead serious: "Do cats have ankles?"

“I want to be a vet” is a common childhood dream… but I’m curious just how widespread it is!

more vet tech things
Client: Do you ever get tired of baby-talking the cats?
Me: Nope!
Me (in my head): NO. I WILL BABY-TALK ALL CATS ALL THE TIME BECAUSE ALL CATS ARE BABY. THEN I WILL GO HOME AND BABY-TALK MY CATS. YES EVEN THE 15-YEAR-OLD BECAUSE SHE TOO IS BABY

I studied so hard this morning omg my brain hurts. Taking 2 exams in one day really wears me out once I get home but I’m glad it’s over and done with. I wish I could take a nap but gotta study.
