Stu is true golden retriever energy

Meaning, he is very sweet and loving towards you, but there's not much else going on inside that brain of his

He doesn't suspect a single thing with you

You are his perfect partner, and that's about it

Sure, his killings with Billy have been going super well, and he always comes out unscathed

Yeah, that person who shushed him in the movie theater was found completely mutilated the next day

What about it?

You wouldn't have anything to do with it

Stu just thinks that you are made out of 100% innocence

And you kind of like it that way

You'll tell him when you're ready

Until then, you just appreciate Stu treating you like a person and not some powerful God

Vincent has been finding himself with a new sense of inspiration for his wax art

He dreams of this ethereal yet terrifying being he has never seen before

He's told you about the dreams, and you always respond with a soft smile and a "that's interesting"

Vincent as no clue that you're the creature he's been seeing

And you must say, his art is pretty damn accurate

You didn't have any intentions on telling him the truth, at least not right away

But the way he sees this version of you as his muse makes you want to say something sooner

He's basically idolizing you, and he doesn't even know it

Not that he doesn't act this way with you normally

But how fun it could be to see his reaction once you tell him the truth

And although he's usually one to demand what he wants to know, he doesn't quite feel comfortable doing that with you

I've mentioned this when I first started the blog, but unlike with my previous rec blogs, there was quite a long period of time between the time when I started reading buddie fics and when I started this blog (live, five-ish months). Consequently, there's a lot of fics I've read during that period that I've never recced! So I thought I'd try to do a "Throwback" rec once in a while to rec these fics. Enjoy!

randomly assorted scott pilgrim headcanons!

(mostly involving roxy)

(some involving future scenarios)

envy & roxy have the same weak spot behind their knee. they are also girlfriends. this is the most important headcanon & i have a whole separate thing that goes more in-detail on this but this is all you need to know

kim is a huge tegan & sara fan (she’s from canada and definitely bi so it makes sense). she likes their earlier albums (since it takes place in the mid-2000s it would probably be around the time so jealous and/or the con were released), and when heartthrob and lytd came out she tried to pretend she hated the new pop sound but she secretly loves it.

lynette lost her arm while performing a show with tcad that brought the house down. literally. the frequency of the vibrations emitted from their performance was powerful enough to cause a minor earthquake, and while the band was trying to escape the venue, her arm was crushed by falling debris.

envy is bilingual, having grown up in montreal, and speaks both english and french.

roxy & matthew are best friends. however, when they first joined the league, they absolutely could not stand each other. each thought the other was totally obnoxious, and they would constantly bicker and fight with each other. they also definitely got into the pirates vs ninjas argument on more than one occasion. eventually, after a sparring match gone wrong, they bonded over the fact that ramona had used them in some form while they were dating her (matt for his powers, roxy for her sexuality), as well as their love of too much black eye makeup, and they’ve been inseperable ever since. they definitely have a partners-in-crime dynamic, and their friendship is 80% snark and 20% chaotic dumbass.

later on, lucas gets roped into their friendship as well, and they form an unstoppable friend trio. roxy sees him as a cool older brother type. matt has such a huge repressed crush on him you don’t even KNOW and roxy teases him about it literally all the time

after the events of the series, they form a 3-piece punk band called roxy & the hooligans (title derived from a book i read when i was a kid). roxy is the lead singer and bassist (she learned how to play out of pure spite just to flex on scott & todd), matt is lead guitarist & backup vocalist, and lucas is the drummer. matt is also their special effects/pyrotechnics guy.

they’re also housemates for a little while, then matt & lucas start dating and roxy moves in with envy when they start dating. of course, this does not affect their friendship, and they have double dates frequently.

after she starts dating envy, roxy also forms another best friend group with julie powers and lisa miller. at first envy is worried roxy and julie won’t get along bc she thinks julie will be jealous of roxy for “stealing” envy’s attention, but they end up bonding over their shared hatred of scott.

lisa and roxy are identical twins who were separated at birth. (this was bc they’re both portrayed by mae whitman but i might retcon this one, idk)

meanwhile, roxy & todd actually, genuinely HATE each other. todd was always kind of a bully to her when she was in the league & she hates how much he gets on her nerves. to make up for it she loves to rub in his face how much he fumbled the bag with envy

envy was genuinely hurt by lynette going behind her back with todd bc she thought they were friends. lynette is pretty indifferent about it.

after the events of the comic, ramona starts a support group for all the women affected by gideon.

envy is a natural redhead, but started dyeing it blonde once she had her big rockstar makeover, and often alternates between the two shades.

(tentative, still figuring out whether i wanna make this a full headcanon) roxy is a natural brunette, but dyed (and maybe also cut) her hair after ramona broke up with her, as the gays™ are known to do. she also used to wear her hair in space buns instead of pigtails (whaat nooo this totally wasn’t inspired by spinel what are you talking about)

roxy doesn’t really care about the spelling of her name; she spells it with a “y” and with an “ie.” (alternate idea: she spelled it with an ie before the breakup and with a y after the breakup?)

barbie movies exist in this canon, and envy recorded “hope has wings” for the magic of pegasus when she was a teen (back when she was still going by natalie) but she’s super embarrassed about it. she has literally done everything in her power to hide it, but as soon as her friends find out about it they refuse to let her live it down.

likewise, finally out of pe exists in this verse except now it’s just part of envy’s early discography, which she wrote before she formed TCAD.

technically the events of the story happened at the same time the early barbie movies & brie’s album came out but we can afford to move the timelines around a lil bit just for funsies

kim created the maid costume herself, & she’s a closet geek/cosplayer. later on she & envy end up bonding over their secret nerdy sides.

she’s also a closet theatre kid

roxy is the kind of person that tries to put on a tough front to avoid getting hurt & being seen as weak but if you give her even one (1) single tiny bit of affection she will instantly fall apart (especially if you happen to be a pretty girl)

when gideon was messing with everybody’s memories, he ended up causing a rift in the universe that caused the timeline to branch into two separate realities (the books and the movie, respectively). when he was defeated, they merged into one again, but the characters now have memories from both realities. it’s a little confusing

wallace ends up getting together with stephen later on (maybe? they seem like they’d have a fun dynamic), and they’re happy together, but once wallace finds out about matt & lucas dating he’s so fucking salty about it bc HE HAD A CHANCE WITH LUCAS LEE THIS WHOLE TIME

ramona eventually becomes the lead singer of shatterband. scott & kim decide the two-person lineup isn’t working out for them; they need a frontman, someone with charisma to tie them all together. then they hear a voice coming from the bedroom. they go to investigate and find ramona singing softly to herself. she’s a bit hesitant to join at first bc she’s not super confident about singing in front of others, but they manage to convince her by telling her how she could totally one-up envy.

matthew is a proud, unabashed theatre kid. roxy is the kind of person who acts like she absolutely despises theatre kids (even tho she’s really just as melodramatic as matt but won’t admit it) until karaoke night rolls around & she suddenly knows all the songs

roxy is a mixed media artist & is proficient in quite a few different techniques, but her specialty is graffiti. since being a ninja takes a lot of discipline & she often got criticized for letting her emotions get the better of her, it gives her an outlet to be more uninhibited.

the twins are pretty aloof & don’t really talk to anyone else besides themselves; they just kinda do their own thing while viewing everyone else with either mutual respect or smug superiority. gideon doesn’t really give a shit about the other league members, but the twins are his “favorites” (relatively speaking) just bc of how efficient & powerful they are

scott & ramona end up in sort of a semi-throuple with kim. no one really knows what their exact situation is; whether they’re an open relationship, friends with benefits, or just officially all dating each other, but wherever they are, kim is usually also there, & they don’t question it. (honestly the more i think about it the more i like the idea of polyamorous ramona just bc there’s so many characters i ship her with)

maybe wallace also gets involved. just for funsies

in the future, roxy ends up taking knives on as her ninja protégé. as a mentor, she’s pretty no-nonsense bc she wants her to be able to reach her full potential, but she also tries to keep her temper in check & not be overly harsh on her just bc of what she went through in her own training (at the ninja academy she was looked down upon for her half-ninja status & constantly belittled for being too soft, undisciplined, emotional, etc. which caused her to push herself to the brink of total physical and mental exhaustion to prove them wrong, & that led to her parents pulling her out bc they were worried she was gonna push herself so hard it would kill her, & that whole situation is the main source of most of her insecurities). at first she’s put off by how relentlessly upbeat knives is, but then she sees how eager she is to make her proud & roxy can’t help but see a bit of herself in her. over time she comes to see her as sort of a kid sister, especially when knives eventually comes out to her, though she refuses to admit how much of a soft spot she actually has for her. she knows knives can handle herself, but she’s also grown more than a little protective of her (and scott is terrified of her for this reason)

i have a LOT of other HCs regarding specific backstories/relationship dynamics/etc that i might post later if i get the motivation for it but these are just some of my shorter ones

Daydreaming bg3 scenarios is my full time job at this point and I've had this phenomenal idea on my walk the other day. It's not really a headcanon since it has little basis in canon and directly contradicts some game events and plays with the lore like it's play-doh so more of a AU/fanfic idea, but...

It always struck me as inaccurate for Durge to be referred to as a "Bhaalspawn" since they're literally a PART of Bhaal made into a separate person in an act of (very confusing) divine creation and it really downplays just how powerful and dangerous they are. Especially since I fully subscribe to the idea that Durge is NOT a mortal, but that's simply not in the game due to just how OP it would be to play an unkillable Dame Aylin-esque character and the definition of a Bhaalspawn is "mortal offspring of the dead god Bhaal". So what the hell are they?

The Slayer. Or at least they're a direct vessel for it, more like.

No, really. Hear me out. Have you noticed how Gortash refers to Orin as "The Slayer" in that bit of dialogue when she puts a dagger to Ketheric throat? Except she's not? Not yet at least because the dialogue does not change depending on if you're still the one who has Bhaal's favour or not and she doesn't get it until you piss of Dad enough for him to go "fine have it your way, ungrateful brat". Plus I don't think The Slayer has been used as a shorthand for "Chosen of Bhaal" anywhere else sooo... Does he assume it's a feature of the position since he knew Durge had command over the form before their disappearance?

That's what birthed the first worm in my brain leading to this unhinged infestation, but it's not all -- there's THE URGE itself.

The game fucks it up SO bad on the whole front because it's reluctant to take choice away from the player, which is maybe understandable, but absolutely WRECKS the narrative that it's something to be afraid of. There's what? Alfira and the squirrel? Those are the only unavoidable consequences of having these supposedly violent and divine compulsions baked into every cell of your damn body. Saving your partner from a gruesome death by your hand needs a dice roll of 15, for fuck's sake! It was harder to convince a bunch of goblins to not turn me into an arrow pin cushion. Durge themself has been scared shitless of it their entire life and you're telling me the thing mostly boils down to dialogue choices? That just won't do for me, sorry. In the game The Urge's source is also never really explained beyond "of course you have unstoppable violent compulsions, you're 100% Bhaal's flesh and blood" which is fucking BORING and doesn't make sense to me because as far as I know Bhaal loves murder because that's his domain as a god, he was not a compulsive killer as a mortal so why would it be something that's passed down? No, The Urge is a fucking Slayer thing!

"It also had the ability to incite attraction in others, and remove any negative feelings they felt, or compel an urge to slay in any intentionally malevolent being, whenever it chose."

To be fair this is from a 2e sourcebook, but COME ON. Didn't it strike anyone else as weird that young Durge is mentioned to have slain an entire PALADIN ORDER before making their way to the temple if you're playing as an oathbreaker? Like, HOW? Slayer form bay-be, that's how.

(Can you tell by now I'm not normal about the idea? Yeah.)

All living creatures learn the best from their own mistakes and I think that letting The Slayer take over would be Bhaal's version of letting your incessant kid touch the clothes iron because they just refuse to leave it alone. Bad parenting, but it's Bhaal we're talking about lmao. "Oh you don't want to kill? No biggie, fuck around and see what happens then. I'll wait." is way fucking scarier to me than him just forcing Durge's hand with the butler basically being like "Heads up, master. Your father is pretty mad and your Urge is hungry so you might commit a murder tonight!" right beforehand.

Just the mental image of Durge thinking "I've done it! I've saved Isobel!" and then having the starved Slayer rip itself out of them like it does out of Orin when Bhaal forces her to transform... You see my vision right? RIGHT? And then the beast gets slain because what else is there to do and since Durge is immortal they just come back to themself instead of becoming goo (which is a game mechanic already since their sis is not so lucky, rip). The drama and angst potential is INFINITE. The sheer raw power of THAT being the "Bhaalspawn" reveal because if Isobel is alive that means Jaheira must be there like "what the FUCK are you exactly??" and no one can pretend that Durge is just Bhaalspawn+ like they do in the game. Do they kill anyone? People are bound to be at least heavily injured, especially since they've JUST fought Ketheric's bossfight and are not rested and at full potential.

GOD, I am rotating this thing in my head so fast the friction is bound to make my brain melt.

Quite a few criticisms of Shadow in Prime are focusing on how he attacked Sonic in Green Hill instead of talking to him, which at first glance makes him come off as a violent asshole. But when you really think about who he is, who Sonic is, and what’s at stake, it makes sense. I’m not saying it’s morally right, but it makes sense.

The first two episodes make it very clear that Sonic is not a good listener, that he has never been a good listener. Tails, Amy, and Knuckles all say something to that effect, and Rouge gets annoyed by it too. It says a lot that these are the people Sonic cares most about in the world, the ones he would do anything for, yet even when they’re the ones talking, he still doesn’t listen. He ignores Tails when the latter tells him not to attack because it’s a trap, he ignores Amy when she tells them to stick together, he doesn’t really hear Rouge when she’s talking because he’s too busy thinking about how she got into the lab, he ignores Nine about keeping a low profile, and he ignores everyone when he shatters the Paradox Prism.

If someone is that bad at listening, wouldn’t you give up on trying to talk to them too? Wouldn’t you also think that there’s no point in talking to someone who won’t hear you?

Sonic doesn’t like Shadow as much as the others, so he’s even less likely to listen to him, and Shadow knows that. This is made all the clearer when Shadow asks, “What mission?” and Sonic won’t tell him. Shadow knows that Sonic won’t listen to him, so he figures the only way to stop him is by force. The “for once” in his sentence “You need to stop, Sonic, and listen for once” implies as much. Sonic’s lack of listening has been a problem for a long time. And this is a situation where the stakes are high and their home is in danger, which makes Sonic’s refusal to stop and actually hear anyone’s voice but his own all the more enraging.

I dunno, I just find myself empathizing with Shadow even if I don’t agree with him because I’ve dealt with people IRL who weren’t good listeners and I know just how frustrating and infuriating that can be even when the stakes are low, let alone when the stakes are high. It can easily bring out the anger in you, and it definitely makes you want to stop talking to the person because what’s the point? They won’t hear anything you tell them.

And yeah, Shadow is short-tempered and quick to anger; those are some serious character flaws that he needs to work on, and Sonic’s lack of listening combined with the already stressful situation bring them out. But you can see him trying to be better about this over the course of the last episode, how he growls or exhales instead of attacking as a way of managing his anger. He especially mellows out after Sonic saves him, possibly because that reminds Shadow that even though Sonic can be annoying, he’s still a good person who wants to do the right thing.

If Shadow can learn to manage his temper and Sonic can learn to listen, they’ll be unstoppable together.

Hey, I loved your WIP! It's been a while that I haven't so exited for one so I'll watch your progress with great interest :)!

Anyway, I've got a question. How powerful is the MC after all? And if you could explain to us some of his abilities, if you don't mind.

Glad you're excited!

Regarding the MC's "power-level":

The MC as of the last point in the story, is fairly strong. Probably the strongest in the group. Sam comes close, mainly due to their skill, but the MC has a lot of raw strength, that most straight up fights would go in their favour. But outside of the group, there are still plenty of powerful entities, monsters, beasts and even other mortals, that the MC would need to be careful around. They are far from being an unstoppable force.

Ability-wise?

As seen in the book so far, enhanced senses are provided from being corrupted, being able to discern things from far away and with precision. This sped up processing of information extends to the mind, allowing them to be far more efficient when fighting. As the Mc learns/relearns how to exactly fight, this ability will make them a formidable foe.

The healing factor they possess is another boon from being corrupted. Allowing them to heal from almost any wound they take relatively quickly. This regeneration also makes it so that they don't require food, water or sleep either.

Corruptants exude a aura that makes them attractive to mortals. Not even mainly in any intimate way, but more so on a fundamental level. Suggestions and orders are more easily followed, questions and secrets discovered. As well as most mortals not being able but to notice the attractiveness they possess.

Something that exists as a result of the MC's torture is their tolerance to pain. Being able to shrug off/ignore most pain allows them to bypass a lot of fear that would come with fighting or getting hurt.

More in the middle for our MC, is the existence of It being in their head. It can be a boon and a downside. It can share memories with the MC, and thus share experience. This could be a way for the MC to learn "how to fight" quicker. The knowledge It has also can be useful. However just how much can the MC trust it? That is the downside.

Something that corruptants do have to deal with is their volatile and hard to predict emotions. Even in the case of more apathic MC's, the nature of being a corruptant means that your emotions tend to get the better of you often. We haven't seen much of that yet, but it is something to watch out for.

There are other aspects of being a corruptant, but those will be revealed later in the story, and are a little spoilery. So stay tuned!

half life theory

So I saw this conversation between two people on discord, “You know, I realised something In Half Life 1, Gordon, a physicist, is the most dangerous thing for the army that came to kill the scientists (edited) Not the aliens, not the tentacles coming out of the ground that gibs everything No Gordon fucking Freeman is the biggest threat there” “i mean only because hes supposed to approach combat in a methodical/scientific way, as apposed to the monsters and military, the whole tagline for the first game was "run think shoot live", the combat and environments are presented like a puzzle so in that way of course a scientist is goin to dominate” And it got me thinking, you know what actually makes Gordon so unstoppable? Cus i dont think it’s the whole being a scientist thing. For one, he's outfitted with super science gear like the hev suit and experimental weapons. But more importantly, he’s got a massive supply of miracle cures from another dimension. Gordon wouldn't matter for jack shit if black mesa hadn't set up medical centers full of xen healing goop every 20 feet that let him learn from his mistakes in ways no other human soldier had the opportunity to do up until that point. I mean in the regular military, you generally don't get the chance to learn from the mistake of being shot. You just get shot once or twice and you're done for. And as for the theory I developed from this... This healing goo situation could actually be a great reason why g-man would have had to wait a few years to release Gordon again. He'd have to wait until the ant lion healing goop became ubiquitous across locations Gordon would have to travel through, so Gordon could effectively use his skills to speedily rip through locations like a human bullet. Maybe even poke at the threads of fate to ensure Gordon would have recovery tools when needed. Essentially gman and his associates being a level design game developer making sure Gordon has suit chargers and healing goop whenever things get hairy. And with him encouraging the development of the black mesa action protagonist format that was potentially refined not just through Gordon, but with Adrian Shepard, Colette Green, Gina Cross, and Barney Calhoun as well.

Like Black Mesa coulda been an outstanding experiment and proof of concept for a somewhat omnipotent being of how to create human torpedoes if ya really think about it. Learning what sort of conditions lead to humans becoming absurdly lethal super soldiers within the span of just a few days, and how to optimize this process. Not just in the sense of the real life developers of half life learning and growing from the franchise. But g-man and his mysterious benefactors, canonically, in universe, using the events at black mesa and all it’s expansions and spin offs, as practice for the events of half life 2, alyx, and eventually someday half life 3. Just the typical videogame format of having a power and skill progression could take on a new meaning if ya look at it from an in universe context rather than just a pretext for fun gameplay. Instead consider it as a semi-omnipotent being, learning that if you put a human far enough from something you want destroyed, manage their increase of skill and power by putting them through progressively more difficult situations one after the other, with liberal access to resources and fast recovery tools. Then within 2-4 days you’ll be able to hit your enemy with a powerhouse super soldier that seemed to come out of nowhere and they had little opportunity to prepare against because of just how quickly these humans are able to go from zero to hero in optimal conditions. And even though not all of the black mesa event protagonists have been guaranteed to have have survived, so long as they're able to achieve a otherwise impossible goal before their death, they would still count as data towards refining the black mesa action hero method and being able to replicate it to use against the combine. Like if you think about it, each of the half life 1 protagonists could fit in nicely as tests/proof of concepts for different tasks, and different kinds of optimizations for these so called hero types. Like Gordon is solo act/jack of all trades, Collett and Gina are a co-op duo (potentially helpful data for when gordon and alyx would have to work together in the future), Barney is specialized for escort quests of non-combatants, Adrian is a squad leader of more combat focused types, and Alyx is a backup jack of all trades and test to make sure that the system of having a human run a gauntlet of challenges optimized for their growth still works effectively in a post combine world. Could probably even measure when these environmental conditions of having frequent healing and the opportunity for rapid skill progression that comes along with it really came together in the post combine earth, by how and when Alyx was able to become a near unstoppable human badass in her own spin off game.

Chapter 4 (Part 1)

Jake

It has been twenty minutes since I started to drive home. Even though I don’t like talking nonsense I cannot deny the fact that I enjoyed the last twenty minutes of nonsense we talked about. And somewhere between that nonsense she fell asleep. The little glances I am stealing from her face are making me drive slower than ever. She might get a good nap till we reach home.

Things have changed between us— we have changed individually. We are no longer young idiots who let their emotions get the best of them or careless enough to fall in love with strangers. People learn from mistakes is something I have spent my whole life hearing but it makes sense to me only now. To think about it now, our timing had been wrong. The desperation to be with each other was overwhelming in an extremely early stage of our relationship due to which we both ended up getting hurt. It sounded romantic then. Now it smells like the past. She understands it as much as I do.

What she said about us being the endgame still gives me an unexplainable feeling in my stomach.

And that's when I decide to stop.

I try to feed myself the truth— she came to me for help not because she shared the same issue as me. The issue of not being able to get over her. She was pretending to be with Alex for her father's sake. Perhaps due to that lie she didn't get the chance to meet men better than me. She’ll be free from that lie soon and I do not have the confidence to claim that she’ll still choose me.

That's when I focus on driving rather than her face.

When we reach the parking lot of my apartment, I sigh. I am met with two choices— the number one being me waking her up and ruining her sleep and the second one is hardly any better- carry her myself.

I cannot believe I am getting this troubled over it but I truly do not wish to ruin her sleep. I know it feels to get up when you are sleeping so peacefully. And my overthinking is unstoppable. What if she hasn't slept well in days because she was worried about her sister? What if she can't sleep once I wake her up?

I decide to text Garrett. Not Lucas, of course. He’ll give me the worst advice, I am sure, like sleeping in the car myself and when she wakes up again, explaining to her the trouble I was having so she'll think I am a gentleman.

I furrow my brows as I realise that Lucas' mindset is slowly sliding into my mind.

Jake: What do you do when you have a girl sleeping in your passenger's seat?

Jake: a) wake her up and ruin her sleep

Jake: b) carry her yourself

Garrett: Well, it depends on the status of your relationship. Is she just a friend? A. Is she more than a friend? B, def.

I send a quick text back.

Jake: How do you decide the status?

Garrett: Are you kidding me…

Garrett: Do b and her reaction will tell you the status.

I sigh, keeping my phone back. That was an informative conversation.

I get out of the car and open the door to the passenger's seat. That's when I realise another problem- she's wearing a dress. I open the back door of the car and grab a blanket. As I cover her leg to avoid any sort of malfunctioning, she moves in her sleep turning her head towards mine. If she opens her eyes now, she'll freak out because of the closeness. The softness of her skin reminds me of every time I’ve touched her.

Minutes pass by and I am unable to move. My eyes are glued to her face and memories are flowing. Our time in Duskwood was both mesmerising and terrifying. I haven't allowed myself to visit those moments but I can't help it now. Can’t deny how—

My phone buzzes in my pocket and I hesitantly pull away from her. I check the phone.

Garrett: We need you. The kidnapper sent a new video to the client.

The fact that I’ve been desperately waiting for this update and now it appears to be a burden is concerning. But I am not ready to lose my disciplined self yet. I’ve done it once. I want to be careful this time.

I lift her up with one hand under the back of thighs and the other supporting her neck. She sleeps like dead that I am certain of. So there's no worry of her waking up. I only need to keep my movements limited and stiff.

In the elevator, she snuggles into my chest and her vanilla smells messes with my self-control.

I try to focus on the case in my hands but my thoughts always come to one dead end- her in my arms.

I still cannot believe we met yesterday after one year and I have her in my arms right now.

The elevator stops.

In between the sixth and seventh floor.

I rush towards the buttons and manage to press a few with my hand which is under her neck. Nothing works.

I can't even use my phone with her in my arms and letting her lie on the floor in an uncomfortable position is a big no.

That's it.

We’re stuck.

I hate typing on my phone but I'm thinking about Reginald again and wanna yell about him,,

The general fanon notions for his motives are either a) he cares about the Toppat Clan's safety first and foremost, or b) his motives are entirely selfish and he just wants power. I think that his true motives are actually somewhere in between, and something else entirely.

It's not just concern for the Toppat Clan, because when he betrays Henry, he doesn't mention anything about the Toppat Clan being better off, instead only focusing on his own gain, and because he's willing to surrender his own leadership to an intruder with unknown motives to avoid his own arrest.

At the same time, he isn't just greedy for power, because he's willing to accept Henry as leader if he proves himself worthy, even when Henry is entirely at his mercy and he could take back leadership with one simple hand movement.

So, what does Reginald actually care about?

I'd argue that the answer is security and agency, for a couple of reasons (included what I just stated above).

These two motives would explain why he's so desperate to take over and yet still allows Henry to take charge after proving himself. When Henry proves that he's capable of warding off a government raid, that gives Reginald his need for a sense of security, but being second in command means he still has some agency.

Take his Right Hand Man, for instance, who checks off both boxes. He's a loyal and dependable bodyguard who can easily take down most opponents (security) and will obey any order without question, assuming there's a reason behind it (agency).

Reginald is convinced he's unstoppable as long as RHM is with him, keeping a level head even in certain danger. Take RHM away, and Reginald immediately breaks.

I don't think it's even just cowardice, either. I'd argue that Reginald genuinely doesn't know how to take matters into his own hands instead of getting someone else to do things for him.

We know from Revenged that Reginald has two guns in his possession, possibly more, at least at the time of CtM.

But his only successful shot is when Henry has his back turned and is walking slowly. In other routes, he doesn't even try to use them, instead taking cover and telling Henry to do something in Toppat King.

Speaking of Toppat King, why did I say he keeps a sense of security by being second in command when Ellie is the Right Hand Lady instead?

I think he straight up didn't expect Ellie to be given the title of Right Hand Lady so soon after being recruited--she's just a new person that Henry decided to bring along. And I don't think he adjusted well to start.

It's important to note that the Toppat King ending narration takes place after a time skip--likely a lengthy one at that. He talks about everything in the past tense, and speaks of Ellie's promotion with a sense of warmth. He's even seen firing a rifle when he brings up his future with his Right Hand Man, without a hint of fear in his eyes.

And, holy shit, I suddenly understand why this ending ends on a time skip, and why this ending has narration when no other ending does, and why Reginald is the one doing the narration here.

Toppat King isn't just about Henry defending the Toppat Clan and gaining Reginald's loyalty. It's a prelude to Reginald discovering his own capabilities, learning to find his own agency and security without relying on other people or grasping for a rank to give him that illusion.

Could RHM being in the driver's seat of the car instead of Reginald be symbolic of that, perhaps?

I have thoughts on nancy-centric relationships throughout the st canon

i think nancy in general is better left unhindered by a man. because she keeps getting into relationships with guys who clearly have their own damage to work out, and she has her own damage to work out, and eventually it comes down to unstoppable force meets immovable object with the way she goes after problems in her life, y'know? she wants love and companionship as much as anyone else who wants it does, though.

and being with steve was easy for a while because one: it's likely the first guy she's ever seriously considered being with. she's flattered that he likes her enough to pursue her, and then he starts working on being better for her, and in her head, I imagine it's a how could I not love him kind of scenario.

obviously, that doesn't work because steve may be better, but he still needs work. and nancy's own baggage leaves them at a misunderstanding with one another that would ultimately hurt their relationship in the long run.

being with jonathan is even easier, because he understands her in a way that steve doesn't. she doesn't feel stifled with him, doesn't feel pressured to put on a front. but even then, jonathan has damage of his own and an innate fear that he's not going to do enough or be enough for the people around him. as much as we as a fandom agree that steve blossoms into the protector, jonathan already was built for the role (it's why I think they're character foils tbh). he doesn't do it in a big way, but think about it — he kind of parents both his mother and his little brother, and it's gotta be exhausting after a while. so when he becomes distant in season four, it makes sense.

he hasn't thought about what he wants in a long time, and he continues to take it like a champ until it comes to him and nancy. and because it's instinct for him to spare other people's feelings, he does the thing some parents do when they don't want to discuss hard feelings with their children: he simply doesn't tell her. he doesn't tell her he doesn't want to go to college far from home. he doesn't tell her how exhausted he is. he almost does in season three, when they have the "I guess we just don't understand each other anymore" conversation. but then they both almost die in a hospital, and the end of the world as they know it doesn't wait for them to get their shit together.

murray was right about them: they're good for each other. but not yet.

enter the robin and nancy friendship arc in season four. I imagine this starts healing a long wound in nancy, because it's been a very long time since she's had a real girl friend who's her age. and I don't mean the kind of friendship she has by association with stacy and ally and other peers at school. I mean the kind of friendship her and barb used to have.

now listen — I know she and robin had a bit of a strange start, but consider this. nancy's not easily overwhelmed until it comes to other people, whereas robin, however awkward, seems to thrive when she has other people to talk to about the things going on inside her head. they eventually learn to trust each other, but first impressions aren't so easily dismissed.

she and robin, going into season five, could have a wonderful, beautiful friendship in season five. perhaps, if jonathan and steve are to be taken as comphet subtext, they could even be lovers. and I say this not because robin is a girl, but because robin could heal something in her simply by being around. her specific kind of companionship with nancy is something she needs.

then spring break of '86 comes to a close, and nancy suddenly has jonathan back in close proximity. I imagine she feels guilty for her conversations with steve in the winnebago and the woods (she shouldn't, she was emotionally strung out and he was the nearest available source of comfort. remember what murray said about "retreating back to the safety of" steve? case in point).

here's the thing: whether she ends up with jonathan, steve, or robin at the end of season five, or with no one at all, it still works from a literary standpoint. steve's been working on himself since they've broken up, and he's clearly in a better spot that he was mid season two, and to me (to me!) it's really cool when people come back together having become better people. BUT! also jonathans finally reaching a point in his life where he's addressing his own baggage, and with nancy finally forced to confront the Barb Trauma, they may communicate with each other in a way that isn't codependent or founded on shared scary and awful experiences. they could also result in a beautiful friendship, if their relationship doesn't work in the long run (I don't think it will but I could be wrong).

and robin? well, I think we already know how I feel about robin and nancy together — they could have something that's built on one, great communication (they're both very direct), two, general camaraderie (they're both working towards a similar cause without a wild amount of unhealthy codepence), and three, healthy giving/taking: robin is the kind of connection nancy misses and needs, and nancy balances out robins personality just splendidly. if they're not at least best friends by the end of season five I'll be sincerely disappointed by the duffers missing this opportunity (on brand, but still).

or nancy might end up not in a relationship at all at the end of the show. and that would Still be good for her, because for a long time, she's prioritized her relationships and the fate of the world over her own healing. and she should be given the opportunity to heal without the demand of her heart in someone else's hands, y'know?

hey i really love your game recs and was wondering if you had anything for the theme of 'changing not necessarily for the better'? like the idea that yeah trauma can bring you and your friends closer, but sometimes it pushes you apart and its no ones fault. and if possible something either set in reality or low fantasy/magical realism?

THEME: Deteriorating Characters

I'm not sure how many of these really fit what you were looking for. I think at least two of them are outside of genre, but the idea of characters on a downward spiral usually happens firmly within horror games. In the meantime, perhaps you can still find some inspiration from these games.

Cannot Leave Each-other, by Liorbrary.

One of you is a human parent. The other is their werewolf child. When you are together the werewolf always magically maintains their human form. While you are apart things have the potential to be complicated.

There is a shared understanding that if you are separated for too long one of you will die. The exact details of this death are unclear, but you feel it in your bones to be true and looming.

This game is about a relationship between two people who need each-other but might not necessarily be able to maintain a healthy relationship. Something interrupts their normal day-to-day, and they’ll either figure out how to stay together, or they’ll be forced apart.

This game has a potential for tragedy, as well as a resolution that isn’t happy in very many senses of the word. Even if your players stay together, their relationship might suffer for it. If you are looking for a game that will allow you to navigate emotional topics in a setting where death is on the line, you should check out Cannot Leave Each-Other.

Alien Omen, by Ashy Feet.

Alien Omen is a Forged in the Dark game about a pending alien invasion. Characters start off as City Slicks or Rural Rangers who will be introduced to the alien menace preparing it's assault. As players lean into learning about the unknown, they gain power but at the cost of their own corruption.

With every alien encounter, your characters will add ticks to their Corruption track, as it becomes harder and harder to ignore the alien invaders. At 3 Corruption, the players are faced with a choice: there are three factions to which they could choose to join, and doing so will require an initiation ritual that both gives you a new ability, but also causes Harm to the players.

Last Shooting, by My name is Grant.

Two pilots can change your destiny. Two massive war machines can change your future. Two players can share the happiness.

Last Shooting is a 2-player RPG that uses a unique system to tell stories about Mech battles. Using a customized version of the Final Bid engine, Last Shooting builds the characters and defines them more sharply during each scene of play. Then, it gives you the power to destroy any of those aspects to propel yourself to victory.

Last Shooting is meant for single session play, and tends to take 2-3 hours. And it provides the flexibility for no two sessions to play out the same way.

Define your pilot, and destroy them in turn. The battle hinges on what remains.

This game asks players to consider how destructive this final fight will be for your characters, as you will have to actually destroy parts of your “datafile” or character sheet, in order to increase your chances of success. You may win against your opponent - but at what cost?

It Breaks You, by Crab Dominion.

It Breaks You is based on the slasher movie monsters of the 70’s and 80’s - a lumbering, unstoppable force chases you, and you must do whatever it takes to survive. Will you help others, or help yourself? It doesn't matter; in the end, It Breaks You.

It Breaks You features simple mechanics and a one-page layout, allowing you to jump right into the action. All you need to start is 3d6, 3d4 and 2-5 players.

In this game, your characters have two stats: Empathy and Apathy. Regardless of whether or not you help others or help yourself, you’ll be required to roll in order to determine whether your acts drain away at either of your attributes. It’s in your best interests to help yourself, but regardless of your attempts, once you lose all of your pips in one or the other, It Breaks You.

Broken, by Ben Wallis.

Broken is a tabletop roleplaying game of tragic romance for two players about broken objects and broken hearts. Create two characters in a relationship and over the course of ten scenes, you will explore the ways in which the things you loved about each other crack until everything about your relationship is broken--including the ten real-life, physical objects you will break over the game's ten scenes.

In Broken, the relationship will always end. Although the tragic conclusion is inevitable, there is endless potential for healing and self-discovery along the way.

Broken is an emotionally deep game that explores themes of memory, identity, and loss. Broken is also full of empathy-building, hope, and healing. Broken is a game that recreates the raw, visceral experience of going through a break-up along with the catharsis of smashing objects, all while telling a beautiful story along the way.

This game is theoretically one of change not necessarily for the better, in the sense that the relationship doesn’t get better - it ends. Players will break items as they navigate memories as the characters remind each-other of events they experienced together and how they weren’t what they thought they were. As they do this, traits that represent what what each character liked about each-other are burned away. If you want a tragic game that gives you room for catharsis, I recommend Broken.

Thinking about how Dazai and Fyodor canonically have already met at some point in the past, most likely during Dazai’s mafia days.

So Dazai was most likely 15-18 at that time.

And Fyodor’s age is unknown, but many people headcanon him to be a couple of years older than Dazai (which makes sense, I mean he was already scheming like 12 years ago…and…a ten year old, doing…that?!)

Someone said that he’s canonically 39, but I refuse to accept that. I’m not ready for dilf!Fyodor…he just looks tired because he never sleeps or eats…and his canon timeline is weird.

Anyways, so we have two options for that first encounter of these two:

A hormonal teenager and a grown man fighting over some dumb criminal mafia world dominance shit.

No matter what option is canon, it must’ve been pure C H A O S. But either with Fyodor being like „this fucking bitch of a child“ or both of them being like „this fucking bitch of a child“

AND NOW THEY‘RE PRISON BUDDIES, OMG!!! GOSSIPING!!! AND BEING SILLY!!!

Please, please, please, I need their shared backstory so bad…they’re constantly flirting in the present, there is now way that their past encounter wasn’t absolutely hilarious.

Do you have any thoughts or headcanons about this? I’d love to hear them (also your psychological analysis‘ of characters are always so good, what do you think is a possible backstory for Fyodor?)

okay so about Fyodor being 39 we confirmed it's not true, it's someone trolling on twitter from time to time for whatever reason, I don't think we will get info about Fyodor as soon as we may hope to :/

i mean fyodor is definitely older than dazai, at least i believe so, since he appeared (for whatever reason) in light novel episodes, he couldn't have been 12 or younger, I would say he is around 30 now maybe so he was like 18 at the time :)

i don't think fyodor and dazai had deeply shared background in a sense, they definitely met but i don't think they knew much about each other given the fact both of them appear to still learn a lot/meet each other yk what i mean and given the fact when dazai was really young he was already under mori's wing and tbh whole dead apple timeline deeply confuses me and i can't tell if that was actually their first encounter or second one and that's why fyodor was like "oh it's you" when he saw him in that alley so yeah, I would love to think they had a whole convo "if we worked together we would be unstoppable but yk how it is" and just walk away from each other lol or maybe played chess with each other from time to time so they are kinda rivals like poe and ranpo :3

for fyodor...well given real life author and his experience in Siberia, I would assume he was locked up somewhere before and possibly in Asia where he was teaching people and also leraning from them at the same time and doing hard work as they did in real life which is also why he is used and well adjusted to not eating and living in poor conditions which he explained to Ace, it's possible that he was apart of (in bsd manner) some abilities group or whatever and they put him on a death row that didn't happen and that's where his love/faith for/in God started taking huge place as we know it now and he started working against ability users once he understood his sins and sins of the group of people he was locked/taken away with and from that moment he moved towards Yokohama where he knew the most ability users are (maybe) :) so I think he was locked up possibly from a very young age, at this point being a prisoner is his safest bet lol, dude got locked up more times than anyone we know of💀

i would also like to assume he was with someone else as well or that new character will be introduced in a story that is related to him, a lot of people mention Tolstoy which is a great guess but I would also like to add Ivan Turgenev as a possible choice given his work "Father and sons" since that's sort of like a thing in BSD, as well as his vague/contradictory relationship with Fyodor lol or Mikhail Lermontov who Fyodor was inspired by and he also has some works like "Demon" (do i need to explain) and "Hero of our time" which is actually considered to be first psychological novel in Russia :D and his death in general was quite interesting since he sort of predicted it in his own writing!

i think fyodor holds a lot of possibilities and i am very excited to know about him honestly :)
