As we get closer to the finale of the Bad Batch, I'd like to post something that's been in my head for a while.

I want to take an in-dept look at the theme of the show and how I think that shapes the ending.

Firstly, we'll need to look at the theme of the show.

The Bad Batch is a story about a group of rogue clones who must survive the rise of the Empire. Okay, that's what happens, but that's not the theme.

The theme is what the story is about. The lesson you want your audience to walk away with. It is the singular thing that shapes the character arcs and choices, from the protagonists to the antagonists.

I would argue that the theme of the Bad Batch is, "Our strength comes from our individuality and differences" and "We need to make our own choices and let people make their own choices; blind allegiance is the downfall of us all." There's also an ongoing argument about loyalty, but that's a different rant.

From the beginning, it's all been about individuality, and how stripping that away is wrong. The inhibitor chips was the first overarching plot device to further this argument.

The chips take away the individuality of the clones by making them a part of a monolithic hivemind. Gone are the individuals who fought with the Jedi, and in came the Empire. The sterile, uniform Empire where individuality and free thought is treated as dangerous and treacherous.

Our heroes, the titular Bad Batch, retain their individuality and differences and disobedient streak and are celebrated as a virtue, and, for the most part, do not fall into the trappings of becoming the monolith.

Now let's talk about Crosshair, specifically.

Crosshair, however different, fell into the Empire, thinking he was going to be heralded as better and superior than the other clones. His choice to stay with the Empire was a choice at first, but even when it was, this was treated as bad in the narration. Even if it was his choice, he came to ultimate realization that... no, he's not different than the other clones in the eyes of the Empire. He's not treated different or better. He's a number. He's cannon fodder. His blind allegiance almost led to his death (not for the first time (Bracca, anyone?)). It led to Mayday's death as they both realized too late: "We were good soldiers. We followed orders. And for what?"

So the first choice Crosshair makes for himself? The first free choice that he makes that contradicts the blind allegiance?

He shoots the Lieutenant.

And it was great! Narratively, it was treated as the right move because it was!

Okay, it lands him in Tantiss, but through that series of events, it eventually brought him back to his family. He was redeemed.

Moving on, let's look at another interesting character.

Emerie (beloved)

Dr. Emerie Karr, I would argue, is a woman who never had a choice.

I mean, how could she? Shipped off of Kamino, into the clutches of Hemlock?

Look me in the eyes and tell me that you think Hemlock (derogatory) was an affectionate father-figure to Emerie. Yeah, that's what I thought.

Emerie never had a choice. She was not in the battlefield or even with other clones to learn what her free thoughts were. I would argue she was raised to be afraid of the consequences of what Hemlock would do to her if she stepped "out of line" wherever that was when growing up.

She's constantly warning other clones what happens if they don't cooperate with Hemlock. She's constantly held back by her inability to think for herself.

Until Omega.

Time and time again, Emerie regards Omega as her sister in what way she can, in what little vocabulary she has for such a meaning.

Because Omega, Emerie breaks protocol, just in the little way she can, and returns the straw Lula to her. We see the beginnings of the Imperial bonds start to loosen. It's the first crack in the mirror, so to say, when Omega shows her what it could really be like, to have siblings to love, instead of whatever validation she fights to earn from Hemlock. (There's more on that, but again, another rant, another time.)

It keeps going for Emerie, when she's let into the Vault, all coming to a head when she meets Echo.

"I didn't have a choice," she says. "I've heard that before," he retorts, disbelieving.

She has a choice now, is what's not being said. Do the right thing, make a choice, for once in your life. Don't go along with what the doctor wants.

So, what's all this to say?

The ending of the Bad Batch will be dictated by the themes of individuality and free will.

It will all come down to a choice.

Omega, the protagonist, will have to make a choice.

Over this season, in Point of No Return especially, Omega sees how relentlessly the Empire hunts for her. Willing to do anything to get there hands on her.

It's this injustice that makes her angry. She can not let people suffer for her sake.

She won't let her brothers get hurt for her sake.

This drives home the foreshadowing of The Harbinger.

How Ventress warns Crosshair and Hunter, that if Omega was Force-Sensitive, she'd need to leave them to be properly trained.

When Ventress tamed a giant beast with the Force.

I know I'm not alone when I say that I think this will work with Omega's recent discovery of the Zillo Beast, in foreshadowing her and the other kids in the Vault using the Force to "reach out" (which Omega couldn't do with the distraction of her brothers) and tame the beast into wrecking the base and eating Hemlock.

With this discovery of abilities, and newfound charge over these young kids, Omega will be faced with a choice.

Stay with the Batch, or leave for them?

The hair work and detailing on your oc dolls is so lovely! How did you do it?

My approach is to first sculpt as much the hair as i can out of super sculpty III. A problem with sculpty is that it needs heat to cure, and the vinyl heads of most dolls will melt in the oven. so I deliberately make anything made out of sculpty, usually the bangs/front of the hair, detachable for curing (and cure them on a tin foil ball base the same size as a doll's head since sculpty often warps in the oven if left to its own devices). Because I have to cure them separately, this is actually why I can only do certain parts out of sculpey. I would make the whole head sculpey if i could! But i cant do anything that wraps around their head.

The remaining hair parts have to be sculpted with apoxy sculpt. what's nice about apoxy sculpt is its an air dry clay so i dont run into the same melting problem. but whats bad about it is the epoxy builds up in your skin over time and can lead to a severe allergy, so you have to wear gloves when working with it. I hate working with gloves and can never get as smooth of shapes with apoxy sculpt, so i only use it where i absolutely have to (hence why i dont make the whole thing out of apoxy sculpt). On the doll above the beige parts are sculpty, and the grey parts are the apoxy sculpt.

For dolls with bigger hair like Seam, I also used lightweight air dry clay! (literally the goofy crayola stuff) mostly because apoxy sculpt is HEAVY and if i need big shapes, i have to go lightweight.

this method works well for short haired, stylized dolls, but the longer the hair, the more of a hassle you encounter. even on Rhea i was starting to struggle. I would like to find a way to scale up this method for long hair soon though.

#in case youre curious i have tried boiling the clay too to avoid melting the head but other problems arise in that route #the separate assembly method proved to be the least problematic

hi im thinking of a post game au where seth takes the spot of director, annd charlie gets dragged along to be vice director, more details below

i have thoughts behind this ok lemme gather em. Okay so I imagine Makoto chooses Seth specifically because he would be easier to control and reign in, compared to Yomi who did whatever he wanted and even opposed Makoto. It works out better for Makoto to have a director whos subservient, it gives him more power over the peacekeepers

thing iss just cuz seth listens to makoto doesn't mean hes any better when left to his own devices, and he kinda takes after Yomis mannerisms with the corruption and power abuse, with this new surge of power hes on a high and even worse than he was as the investigation chief and he loves it esp with no abusive authority figure to worry about

i do think Seth would be very anxious and paranoid though, thinking people might be out to Get Him, annd thats how we get to Charlie . basically like Seth isnt a fan of any of the peacekeepers and doesnt care to work closely with them, coupled with the paranoia that anyone could be out for him. So he chose Charlie to be his vice director, because as disgusting as he finds him atleast hes assured in how loyal he is and how he wouldnt hurt him, plus the lengthy amount of time they spent together helps

seth kinda uses charlie but like whatever i dont think charlie cares, and charlie gets to feel special having been chosen to be the vice director working closest with seth and being the one seth relies on and being deemed as the only one capable for it

SUNGHOON COULD TELL SOMETHING WAS OFF WITH MINHEE. To him, it was evident by the way she sat against the head of her bed in complete silence.

“You’re so beautiful.” Sunghoon nuzzled his head against Minhee’s, his eyes closed as he sunk into the space between her neck and shoulder.

“My Minhee,” He placed small kisses along her neck, his arms wrapping tight around her waist as he tugged her closer. “You’ll always be safe with me.”

Minhee sat still, her eyes staring blankly into the mirror adjacent to her. Her fingertips twitched in her lap, her phone tight in her hold as the device non-stop buzzed, notifications flooding in.

“Is that all I am?” Sunghoon’s movements paused, his eyebrows furrowing as his eyes snapped open in shock. Minhee lightly bit her lip as she watched his reaction in the mirror.

“Am I only beautiful?” It was evident that she’d been questioning herself for a while, her voice delicate as she spoke on her newfound insecurities. 

Minhee knew she was beautiful, everyone did. But sometimes it felt like her beauty was the only thing everyone ever saw. No matter how hard she tried, or how long she practiced her vocals, everyone only ever saw her exterior.

“No, you’re so much more.” Minhee’s eyes watered, lips trembling as the unavoidable tears burned across her vision.

Sunghoon pulled his head away from the younger girl, one of his arms detaching from her waist to push her hair from her face.

“You’re so smart,” The soft look in his eyes matched the ones coming from his lips, “I've never met anyone who could feel as deep as you.”

The silence in the room could’ve been the most comforting thing Minhee had ever experienced. She could hear nothing but Sunghoon’s soft breathing, her favourite lullaby.

“Don’t get me started about how talented you are,” He jokingly rolled his eyes, his teeth on display as his finger caressed her wet cheeks, “your voice alone could move an entire room to tears.”

Minhee softly shook her head, a soft pout on her lips as the burning behind her eyes grew stronger. “Then why does everyone only talk about my face?” 

Sunghoon sadly smiled at his girlfriend, his voice coming out smaller than hers. “I don’t know, Minhee.” He wasn’t going to try to sugarcoat anything, he knew that she would appreciate his honesty the most.

“But Me? I’ll always tell you everything I love about you, we love about you.” Sunghoon nodded towards her closed door, a light giggle leaving her lips at a sudden creak.

“You’re more than your body, I’ll keep telling the world that until they realize it.” Sunghoon pressed his lips against the side of her mouth, his cheek resting against her own. 

And Minhee believed him. 

Neither idols flinched as the door swung open, rapid footsteps coming towards the two of them. “I can’t believe you’re cuddling without me!” Sunoo dramatically gasped, his body pressing against Minhee’s other side as he squeezed himself onto her bed.

Heeseung stood at the end of the bed, his face void of emotion as he watched everyone gather around their sullen girlfriend. 

“Jake, pass me Minhee’s phone.” Jake grabbed the phone after Minhee shot him a small nod, passing it into their eldest member's hands.

Minhee closed her eyes, the stress of her limbs melting as the presence of her boyfriends surrounded the room. 

Minhee knew that the comments would never stop but at least she now had the reassurance of the boys around her. The reassurance that she actually mattered, that she was more than just a pretty face.

She’d take their sweet nothings over the degrading comments any day, this is where she was truly loved.

One of my WIP transports the company to our world shortly before they're supposed to reach Rivendell, and into the apartment of my OFC.

the dunmeshi yuri discourse feels wild to me because it just feels like the wrong series to be doing this with. yes farcille is a juggernaut ship but like. the series is still made up of a mostly male cast and the more important side characters are also male. for a while its just marcille until izutsumi gets added and she's a teenager so no shipping with most characters for her. if we're being honest this is not a series where its a shock or an upset for there to be more m/m.

not to mention that farcille is still the most overall popular dunmeshi ship on ao3 by far, the m/m to f/f ratio seems to me that there are several m/m ships being rotated around where with f/f its mostly farcille with a couple of minor ships. the only other f/f ship ive seen any consistent content for in the fandom is namari/kiki, a little bit of izutsumi/tade, and some canary ladies.

While dunmeshi is a great series that resists a lot of anime tropes about portraying women and body types I feel like we still owe it to ourselves to be honest in that most of the central character are men who, with the exception of senshi, are pretty slim, women included (falin is fat in my HEART-). I dont really say this to critique ryoko kui, but just because I think its best to temper our expectations about what the story actually includes. you cant hang everything on "but look how well farcille is written" when, while I do love them, falin admittedly spends a good chunk of the series as a plot device more then a person. the glimpses of her self we get are really fascinating to me, and I would confidently say she's a character in her own right, but it would be disingenuous to claim she couldn't have used more screen time or depth into how she feels during all this crazy shit that's happened to her.

#basically what im getting at just beyond this subject matter is dunmeshi isnt the end all be all of diversity. I love how kui draws fat #people and I hope whatever she goes on to do she keeps drawing more of them but I also dont wanna be disingenuous and claim that it has the #greatest fat rep of all time because in the story proper its really just a couple of minor characters #and im so sick of people misrepresenting the numbers. farcille is the top ao3 ship by FAR only one other ship has over 100 fics and farcill #has 242 as of today #dungeon meshi #delicious in dungeon #siren says #do not be rude on this post I will just block you

♡ Kento is patient — He’s a patient man overall, so he knows he needs to keep his patience with you. It took a lot of patience and time just to get where he was now. And he’d make damned sure that he didn’t ruin it for himself… Or you.

♡ Along with his patience, Kento takes it slow. Some yanderes out there are completely out of it — Rushing to get they want and demanding that their darling go along with it. But Kento had some sense of grounding, he knew where a line was drawn and when not to cross it… At least, if it allowed him to still get close to you, still love you and let you know subtly, that you were already his. Even if that meant killing someone — He wasn’t above that. He’d do it in a heartbeat.

♡ Since he takes it slow, he’s subtle. As soon as you gave him the green flag, he went. Showing up as much as you would allow him, with things you liked. It was odd, since you hardly told him things such as your favorite candy or book— or flowers. But he always chalked it up to how you had quite the history online and that he only wanted to know enough about you.

♡ When he sweetens you up and gets you more comfortable, he starts to act more controlling. Either suggesting that you spend less time online and more time with him, or try something new with him — inside your safe space of course. As much as he’d love to be the person to reintroduce you to the outside world, he’d hate if you took that as an opportunity to leave him.

♡ To anyone’s surprise, he pulls a decent manipulation card. Especially when you two become close. He’ll pull the “you don’t spend enough time with me” card, and insist you’re always glued to your devices. He knows it’s how you work for the school — But for the love of god could you pay more attention to him instead of that fucking computer. You spend time with him, you let him in your safe space after all, that is spending time with him. But he insists on more over time.

♡ He traps you in this cycle — Get upset that you won’t pay complete attention to him, try to insist that you’re overworking yourself or just pulling unnecessary screen time, ask you if you’re just trying to avoid him, guilt you into feeling bad and then make you crawl back to him in some way. Kento was a walking green flag of a man, he had such excellent intentions and standards, treating you with nothing but the best care — but even excellent men such as himself have their downsides. And his downside was this. Controlling you and playing you like a card, expertly, just so he wouldn’t lose you.

♡ Kento always had the best intentions. He always had the best intentions for you. And he would always apologize to you for the trouble he caused, due to his own insecurities and controlling behavior. He does anything to make it up to you, anything you tell him… Anything except leave. That’s one thing he’ll never do, not after all the work he put in just for you. He can’t leave you. He loves you too much.
