Oooo! Tough question!! So I love Odysseus, I love Telmachus, I love Penelope I love Hermes, and I love Circe (I don’t have just one favorite and will not be choosing :)) I don’t really like Antinuous that much. Also not super fond of Zeus.

I had a thought. Apropos of nothing, really. Please don’t give me shit for it.

For a long time, I didn’t understand Polin. I think there are certain tropes, like enemies-to-lovers or forced proximity, that are quite straight-forward. The attraction is always immediate and evident. Friends-to-lovers is more complicated because it’s layered with history and platonic feelings. But I think that Polin is even more complex than the typical friends-to-lovers pairing. It seemed to me, and I’m sure it still seems to many people, particularly unrequited. Particularly unbalanced a dynamic. Particularly impossible to everyone around them and to audiences. ‘How could he ever be interested in her?’ The possibility of their love is not believed. I didn’t believe it. And, of course, as is probably the case with many Polin fans, I relate to Pen more than any of the other characters.

I thought about it and I came to realize that the not-believing actually came from a more insidious place than I had been willing to consider. It came from conditioned bias and internalized fatphobia. Purely. Because it’s one thing to see a love story that you don’t know the ending of and to not believe in its possibility because it starts out as unrequited. It’s another thing to know where it’s going and still not believe. The seeming impossibility of their love story comes from a deeply-rooted societal flaw.

I want all Polin fans to know that to love Polin, to truly believe in it, is to be a radical. It is truly to say, ‘fuck everyone’s expectations.’ The non-believers are brainwashed. I want all Polin fans to know that we are right and they are wrong. Maybe they’ll come to understand. Maybe they won’t. Whether or not they choose to try to understand is up to them. But we must not ever let them put any doubt into our minds or our hearts about the possibility of this kind of love. I know they’re a fictional couple. But they are representative of something very real.

I’ve been rewatching the show and there’s something else I’ve come to realize. It’s easy to fixate on the scenes in which Pen feels rejected by Colin. They’re devastating. But those moments are just loud. They scream at us, whereas the moments of mutual feeling whisper. But they are there.

Been thinking about Durge romances and how much I love the companions. Many people love Astarion's response when Durge gets their "kill your lover in their sleep" scene and, fair, that was the point that I unfortunately began to genuinely love the pointy bastard. I do enjoy watching him sass Bhaal. Plus you being the only one he's not afraid of in the world and also "we can compare notes" because he recognises what's happening, yes, yes.

And additional honourable mentions to Lae'zel and Karlach:

Lae'zel threatening to bite you back and informing you that if you don't beat Bhaal you will be fighting her and that will be much worse, topped with the gem of "Not to be maudlin, but I'm glad I didn't gut you."

Karlach asking you not to bite her because trying to eat her flesh will hurt you. also she growls back at you. and asking what the fuck you're talking about when Durge goes into one of their, uh, poetic moods. And parallels: "It's bad. I won't say it isn't. But... I've done worse. Powers beyond our control picked us to do their dirty work - that isn't our fault." I mean Durge has absolutely done worse, but I concede the gist of your argument.

But my favourite variants are these three (in no particular order):

Shadowheart's "Hells, what I wouldn't give for a boring lover sometimes" shortly before scolding you - "no biting!" Bad hellspawn! Bad! Use your words! - It's the middle of the night, she's tired, and she expected something way more fun that this damnit. (also; "She was starting to trust you. The only one she ever has. Pity it's coming to an end." *screaming*)

Wyll reminds us he's the one with the high charisma stat in this party with his pep talks: "The coast would sooner be swallowed whole by the Sea of Swords [before I'd hate you]." - "Rise up, meet its gaze. Show it no fear, and grant it no mercy." - "You are a champion. If this foe demands blood, then tear off its limbs and let it drink its own!" Never been more revved up to punch Bhaal in the face, thank you. And Sceleritas directly compares himself to Mizora and aAhHHHhhhhh-!

And then there's Gale, who clearly has no idea what's happening or what do about it. Get it out of your system, he says, trying his best to be supportive. "This is not good, if I may state the obvious." - "No, no clotting. I like my blood flowing in my veins, thank you most kindly." He would prefer not to die, thank you. 10/10. Durge is way too distracted by this to listen to Bhaal right now.

Lae'zel? Babygirl, you were lied to and used by someone you thought had your best interest so know you can trust again and that love isn't a weakness for a warrior, but instead gives a warrior purpose when they fight?

Halsin? Love, know you don't always have to reign in your anger and emotions to be the perfect leader and you like the rest of us are fallible and make mistakes so know that when the dust clears, you can be loved for for every aspect of yourself, even the parts you see as bad and it doesn't always have to be physical.

I know we love the idea of Hobie hanging out with the Spidey-gang and that is adorable I will admit but like...

Hobie being the youngest in the group for once and just being a universal little shit?? Sign me up.

Him tagging along with Jess cause she's his mentor (in my head), bugging Miguel during work hours, encouraging MayDay to be as chaotic as possible at Peter's expense.

He wants to ride Jess' motorcycle. He has taken it for a joyride more than once.

Miguel is like 'Watching you is like a full-time job, you know that?' and suddenly Hobies like

'Really now? Say less.'

And he REFUSES to leave Miguel's office. Just slacking off in there, playing some guitar chords, whistling, throwing things like pens at Miguel, stealing shit when he turns around.

He obnoxiously calls him 'Migs', shouting 'Migs, mate!!' because he knows it irks him.

Even LYLA is like 'Oh God, this guy's annoying 😐'

The food court gets Mountain Dew Baja Blast in the vending machines. He gives MayDay approximately 4 sips and now she's swinging across the Spider Society like a bat outta hell and nobody can catch her.

Have you ever seen a baby flying through the air at 75mph? No?? Do you want to??

I just love Menace!Hobie. Prankster!Hobie.

Hobie who puts a 'kick me' sign on Miguel's back because he knows Miguel's huge as fuck and couldn't possibly take it off by himself

And he watches, laughing so hard he's in tears as Miguel's rippling muscles stop him from reaching the paper on his own back 😭😭
