people keep mentioning meeks' reaction to being transported to modern day and discovering technology so i wanna give you this: (probably not fully in character but shhh im tired)

at first

he wakes up because his alarm was going off, reaches out to smack it but hits a smooth buzzing surface instead

he jumps and accidentally sends it across the room

sits upright, grabs his glasses and stares at the offending brick

"ger waKE UP WHAT IS THAT"

freaking out, hesitantly gets up to investigate

picks it up like a bomb

looking at it, lifts it higher to look underneath and at the sides for some sort of thing to pull or press to stop the buzzing

accidently knocks the snooze button with his finger as he turns it over

realises that he can interact with stuff and his face drops like hes just been factory reset

"oh my GOD"

pitts is still half asleep looking at him like this

accidentally opens the camera from the lock screen and almost passes out

"ITS ME!!!!" turns to show pitts "..so its a mirror?"

so this is my take on human Caine

keep in mind that this is all my headcanons and imagination, and I'm going with the theory that he is an AI and he wasn't a human before

(again it's my hc!) also minor tw for drvg mention

so going with that logic, man is an AI, for his whole life all he was, was lines of numerical codes and suddenly he's thrown into this world and becomes a human, as we all are aware a human body needs to comply to the laws of physics, biology, etc., it has needs that need to be taken care of for it to function right which an AI in a digital world doesn't need to do so imo all of that had to mess with his head a lot, I think that there is a high possibility that he would experience some kind of body dysphoria, he would feel that this isn't HIS body, that something isn't right, something doesn't fit etc., that would be pretty logical

complete change of how his brain operates (idk what he had as an AI but let's also call it a brain lol), human body operates on five basic senses, which is something that he didn't have to submit to, the list of "senses" he had as an AI in a digital world is probably long as fuck and now he has to lean on only five basic ones? that gotta suck and be absolutely difficult (which should be obvious, imagine suddenly becoming blind or deaf, now you need to learn to operate with even less senses than you had, fucking sucks), back in the digital world he could do practically everything with little effort and now? he is limited by this human body/world and all the laws it needs to obey

still on those senses, I think they are all over the place because of the sudden change so he would be prone to sensory overloads or something like that

he literally needs to learn all social rules, written and unwritten, and overall the basis our world works on, which we had YEARS to learn about as we grew up, and yeah as an AI he had some info about humans and our world 'cause he had direct contact with us back in the digital world but it wouldn't be even close to enough to live here among us (heh) completely out of nowhere

because of all of this, I think that he would be a total train wreck and he would be very prone to fall into some unhealthy habits, like for example imo he could easily get addicted to drugs (idk what kind tho), he takes some pills and he can "get back" to his old life at least for a moment? sign him up! for that short period of time, he could feel "right" again, he could have control again [I'm also leaning towards the idea that he could develop some kind of control issues considering who he was back in the digital world as an AI], drugs give you a high which on you can imagine/hallucinate/feel a lot of things so yeah, he could easily get addicted to those, especially if his trips would revolve around him being back in his digital world, his home

and nope, it's not me projecting onto my fav character yet again, not at all (I'm a big liar)

but fr tho, I think it would make sense if he actually was an AI who was never a human and somehow he got out of the digital world with all circus crew

and I made a visual of him in a picrew! (if anyone will want it, I will drop the link to it)

I made some small adjustments in ibis paint lol, like the eye color and the roughly drawn Glasgow smile scars (for some reason it just fits him??? cause he was literally all teeth and it connected in my brain??? idk but my mental imagine of him as a human has those scars, can't do anything about it) + a bit longer lines under his eyes

he would look like he's in his really late 20's or early 30's

i think people might find it funny for me to say that, since they are chapters that definitely have a romantic undertone to it, but this weeks episode covers one of my favorite moments of shima and mitsumi, in terms of their platonic relationship.

first of all, we start chapter 10 with mitsumi and fumi talking about love, giving us a better in-depth on mitsumi's view of the matter. like any other teenage girl, the curiosity is still there, but the fact that she just instantly thinks about exams is so dear and funny to me.

mitsumi is demi coded for me in many, many levels, which brings me a great sense of comfort. yes, we do have her running away, heart on hear sleeve, fumi on her ear while she questions about love — and that makes my demi hc even better. that's because she found her person, so love became something that can start to flourish. i just find all of that beautiful. but anyways, we're here to talk about platonic love so let's all focus on platonic love:

when i say that this chapter is filled with platonic moments between them, i'm most referring to mitusmi's worries about shima and, later on, her prejudices towards him based on what people told her. were they saying the truth?

this creates a little doubt on mitsumi's mind and, since she was always the girl who knew everyone, who knew their parents and such, she starts to question how much shima, the guy he considers her first ever tokyo friend, is opening up to her and really wanting to be her friend.

well, if he's her friend...why he's hiding so much? why he's missing school? why do people say those things about him? mitsumi starts to get worried about her friend and, in a clumsy, very mitsumi way, tried to help the best way she can — which it didn't turn out great.

while, on shima's side, he's being confronted by similar feelings. the bright golden girl he met and got so enchanted to was starting to believe on rumors about them, like all the other people on his life. that makes him lash out in a terrible way to her, regretting instantly.

and then, we have the conversation with chris, that is number one of many, many others. chris is, somehow, the safe connection between his past and future, the one he can be the most honest with (and we'll only find more about it later on. right now, chris is only his quirky funny friend. can't believe we had no idea what was coming at us!!). and that's how we manage to see a crack on shima's walls: he's terrified of losing a friend he considers dear. he's afraid of making the same mistakes over and over again, a circle of regret.

and it all comes to light on the famous scene at the stairs. shima, who would once again run away from his problems, pretend nothing happen, is suddenly confronted by a girl who won't back down until things are settled. mitsumi won't lose her friend, she'll fight for him.

that's the chapter where we start to see their bond being created. it's not about romance, not about their romantic feelings (that didn't even start to grow): it's about not wanting to lose the one who means so much to them, about the chance of being completely open with someone.

yes, the chapter 10 starts with the discussion love and chapter 11 ends with it, i won't deny that. but what we have in between are two friends who are still learning to navigate around each other, who are exposing themselves little by little. bond is about love, platonic or not.

tl;dr: Devil Spamton Angel that just looks like that because of videogame-like corruptions (see this for example)

And of course, LORE DUMP BELOW THE CUT

Devil was one of Spamton’s Angels where he is a manifestation of his good sense in which in this setting, Spamton blames everything but himself for his downfall and misery. Devil happened because he is a corrupted pipis and ended up with weird graphics and color schemes similar to old video game corruptions, which are often compared to being satanic in nature. The devil helps Spamton get through his downfall and back on his feet as at least a pretty well off worker for the new computer/internet era. It is humiliating as it takes a lot of admission of errors and his faults and being held accountable for his actions. But at the same time devil helps Spamton, he manages to gets his own success by helping other cyber city denizens and lightners. The energy and attention he gets makes him grow bigger, to a short addison size, independent and better as he climbs up the success ladder. Spamton has a cushy job, a good potential life ahead of him but not learning his lesson and somehow being shadowed by a mini demon version of himself that never went away because of a strange glitch makes him deeply unsatisfied, angry, bitter, etc and begins to plot against Devil to get rid of him now that he's well off and be on the limelight again. Devil knows of what’s coming, he wasn’t stupid, so he uses his corruption powers to modify his own code  to create an autorun script for when he is inevitably killed by spam and have all his info absorbed by him. At this point he is influential but he isn’t strong like a whole darkner. (The minitons in my hcs, have their data always return to spamton once they are terminated, but spamton is in control and gets it all of their memories and experiences, and has no safety measures because this isn’t supposed to happen) So the script he makes basically formats and expels all of Spamton’s memories and "soul", and the only thing in his system becomes Devil’s code. As a result he basically got the vessel and became a solid darkner individual. He basically vomited spamton dust and put it in a jar as a bragging piece. Devil is all that he talks about, he gets his job done and is confident about it, probably the most stable guy in the room because he literally killed all his insecurities and bad habits/issues in the strangest of senses. He's the opposite of spamton, and killed his worst flaw while also being his own person He’s also a tad narcissistic but in a healthy amount(because people can be full of themselves and still good), He knows his own flaws too and knows that if he fucks up he'll own up to his mistakes hile knowing his own worth. I thought it was interesting to subvert the ‘angel good’ thing and make him straight out a dude who gets things done by being direct and holding people accountable for their mistakes. It may be a punishment to some, but in the end it gives you opportunity to be better and move forward in life and past your fears.

HI!!!! I WANT TO TALK ABOUT BFDI RECOVERY CENTERS!!!!!!! IM DOING IT UNDER THE CUT BECAUSE IM GOING TO RAMBLE!!!! I THINK ABOUT THIS TOPIC WAY MORE THAN ANY OF THE WRITERS EVER HAVE!!!!!!

sometimes i like to wonder how recent of an invention recovery centers are. bc like,,, we've seen time and time again in bfdi that these objects are inherently afraid of death/dying, like thats an instinctual thing they still have, but also they dont seem to care that much about it once it actually happens and sometimes dying -> recovery is seen as the most convenient option LOL

and i feel like a lot of the time these characters dont like, understand the concept of oblivion? whenever they're scared about a lack of recovery centers it comes off more like the kind of grief of a friend suddenly moving away more so than someone being Gone From The World Forever, if that makes sense. they're definitely still really upset, but it seems more like "noo i cant spend time with this person anymore nooo"

its hard to get a read on this stuff because outside of referencing real-world time between episodes they basically only use comically large or small numbers for time (like saying gb wrote a book a billion years ago or callling gelatin six years old because bfdia was six years old at the time). and i also really dont think these characters are coded to be a specific age group, but i personally like to think of most of these characters as part of a recent generation(s?) where recovery centers have been abundantly accessible their entire lives, so they've grown up not really worried about it, but at the same time haven't been around long enough for like, an instinctual fear of death to have entirely left. if that makes sense. theyve also been around long enough for them to just be tossed around anywhere i guess considering firey recovery centers being in the ground is just a completely acceptable theory LOL

i also like to think algebralians were part of the invention process somehow. cause imean. its been shown that recovery is a well known (albeit difficult) skill for them to learn naturally, so a powerful enough number/function would probably have a pretty good understanding of How it actually works, and also uhmmmmm uhh math is a part of engineering or something. Somehow you always make it in time when I feel down to lift me up by asking me about Wedgeshot, te quiero mucho loco /p Anyways this time I do have been thinking about them a little more so let's get into it -puts on a silly hat and fixes my convience store nametag that says "Wedgeshot provider"-

I really wanna see people explore their rivarly stage like in Battle of Bots so bad, they can be pushing eachother into mud just for the fun of it but if the other actually feels bad the other no longer finds teasing them funny (ex Hotshot on that same episode)

↑ This also goes for a third making fun of either of them and the other jumping in to defend them (bonus if it's Hotshot bc I need to see him snap at someone chihuahua style, cmon guys he's HEATWAVE'S mentee)

We also need to exploit Wedge's being an introvert while dating Hotshot that's A FAMOUS JUNIOR CUBE PLAYER, Imagine him playing for the Cyberblazers from time to time as a last-resort-replacement (Scorch still kinda needs him in his team but he accepts he has a new vocation a little better) and him going "Imma going to dedicate this catching to the love of my life Wedge who's better be watching me right now" specially being a little mushy about it because he knows Wedge doesn’t even like getting his picture taken (it doesn’t go further since Wedge is on earth, meanwhile on Cybertron Hotshot’s old fans are scurrying to find who this mech is because the last news they had on their idol was from like two years ago before he decided to change careers forever lol

↑ bonus of Hotshot ends up actually dedicating a catch to Wedge and failing miserably, he swears he can hear Wedge laugh at him all the way from Earth

I think I already said I hc them to playfight a lot, however I didn't say that at some point, specially if we take Wedge as the one falling first, Wedge let's Hotshot win these playfights to make him feel strong and encourage him to keep on playing with him (funfact male dog puppies do this and that's where I got the inspo for this)

THEM ENJOYING A DAY IN HOLOFORMS that's it that's the idea (otherwise just them playing The Sims and having to make human versions of them)

Scorch being an asshole again (intentional or unintentionally it's up to you) except this time Hotshot has learned to set boundaries and shuts him down firm (let him get a little mean,,, as a treat) and Wedge just being #proud

Both of them are embarrased about the shows they watch in secret, but once one of them discovers the other watching it they actually end up becoming a fan too (they hoped they could make fun of them at first but now they're both being cringe together)

Wedge has code-overrides to change the color of his optics (or even hide some certain feature he found unfitting for a rescue bot in the past) to his common aquamarine ones, best assured that if he disables the code overrides to show Hotshot his original optics he's gonna get moonstruck, heart eyes dude.

Genesis makes no f---ing sense as a character.

I know, shocking coming from the guy whose comfort character is the redheaded asshole from Banora, but I can fully acknowledge bad and stereotyped writing. So I'm going to say it:

Genesis is an inconsistent and poorly written villain.

Fandom really has to work overdrive to get him to make sense. But hey, at least he cute. It's funny though because HCs of him tend to be more consistent than in game.

As a child of adoptive parents myself, his whole adoption arc is a harmful stereotype + doesn't make sense. Why would he kill his parents and then the game tell us he loved them and they loved him? It reeks of the stupid belief that blood relations are the only ones worth having.

And then you have the very weird friendship/rivalry which doesn't get explained in any way so people just assume he's a narcissistic jealous prick, but I wouldn't be surprised if actually it's because he's set up to always be in Sephiroth's shadow no matter what he accomplishes. So we're left with this weird friendship that doesn't make sense and why on Earth would Genesis and Sephiroth even consider each other friends when we don't have anything to demonstrate that?

There could have been a really good political story there about the popularity contest that SOLDIER is (which is mentioned in game), but no it's just classic Disney-style queer coded villain who acts in ways that don't make sense and that's why he's a 'bad guy'.

But then we get turned around again because people in SOLDIER did actually respect him and like him. We get told he's actually a really great guy and everyone is confused by his actions, and we the audience are too because SURPRISE the motive is thin at best

Then they say that Genesis comes back as a good guy after Dirge? And what were we meant to take with the whole G-Files nonsense? Are we lead to believe that Genesis is meant to lead the WRO? What the fuck is going on with this character? How? I thought he was a murderous asshat?

The only way I can make sense of it all is to have several HCs that are somewhat able to glue this all together. And the biggest one is that CC is told through Zack's eyes - an unreliable narrator.

We don't ever see Genesis murder his family or Banora, we are told that he did so. We don't see that he is jealous, we are told that his desire to be seen as Sephiroth's equal is 'petty' so we just assumed he hasn't got what it takes - that somehow he is inferior (although Apocalypse is the most OP limit break) and again, we aren't shown why. We're made to assume a lot about his character and the poor writing just gets poorer to try to reinforce something that doesn't make sense.

Huge missed opportunity to have any discourse on the corruption of the Shinra corporation and how they saw them as pawns in some game (lol), and instead we get this very weird lone-wolf villain who actually turned out to be right about wanting to destroy Shinra. It's weird.

Also Genesis' new VA isn't a great fit and reduces him down to being an arrogant Disney villain. The original VA gave him a lot more nuance, softness and humanity, now he's just a bit of a um, grating caricature? I don't know, it was a CHOICE that really contributed to his incongruent character.

So the headcanons I need to maintain in order to make sense of him (and so it doesn't just sound like people in a room just threw crap on the drawing board to make him sound villainy when they realised he didn't come across as 'evil' enough which contradicts the whole- you get my point by now I think):

Zack is an unreliable narrator who doesn't know Genesis at all, and because of that we have someone who can only utilise propaganda and very limited info that he has learned of him. He has no first-hand experience of Genesis at all, and when he does, Genesis doesn't feel the need to show any side of him except what Zack wants to see.

Genesis is not considered popular by Shinra standards (perhaps a scandal?) or potentially threatens the image they created of Sephiroth, so they attribute many of his achievements to Sephiroth.

Sephiroth is tired of Genesis being mad at him for not getting recognition for his work, and Sephiroth doesn't help much by poking the fire here and there.

If Angeal is considered to be somewhat Lawful Good, he wouldn't join Genesis if the guy was the maniac we were led to believe.

i thought about the surgery thing. it was mentioned that tachihara was given less than the others due to his nature as a spy, but im not sure if he can survive or not. if worst comes to worst, im sure he could get the surgery files and have a more private doctor do it. i admit that i haven't thought enough about it, i just kind of assumed tachihara would be fine or somehow find another solution

ALSO YES YES OMG DAZAI AND JOUNO BONDINF!! j feel like the parallels between their pasts would cause some tension at first though. in my mind jouno probably avoids his past like the plague, while dazai embraces it as a part of him or whatever. maybe they intimidate each other at first and then come to realise that they're not threats & actually have a bit in common.

also this doesn't relate to the whole topic but i really desperately want to see tachihara and jouno bond over blindness. like.. as someone that's been losing my vision my whole life, it can be very scary + tachihara's wound was due to a traumatic and severe injury, not just a disease. jouno and tachi seem to be fairly close, from what i barely remember of season 4 and i think this could bring them closer, mafia aside.

also, ranpo and tecchou are very autistic coded. i feel like their autism would clash personally. like in my mind ranpo has very visual stims but tecchou is sensitive to the light. i don't think it'd be a huge deal, they'd just learn to leave each other be when clashes happen.. but i can also see them growing close too.

ALSO YES TECCHOU AND KENJI MENTORSHIP/FRIENDSHIP. tecchou is definitely a big brother figure imo like i think he'd be great at taking care of people. not in huge gestures but in little ways like bringing them stuff that reminds him of them or minor acts of service. and kenji very much seems like a family oriented type of person.

one slightly brutal thought i’ve had before is if something happens to the hunting dogs doctor. they’d be easier to attack than the hunting dogs themself and if they died all of the hunting dogs would slowly have to rot to death. what a vile and awful death to face. ive thought about writing this before but it also makes me a bit sad to think about.

jouno and dazai bonding would be really nice to see. i feel that their senses of morality and justice are vastly different though to the point where becoming close would be hard for the two. with that in mind they could make an interesting combination when it comes to discussing pasts. i fully agree with what you said about jouno hiding the past whereas dazai appreciates his.

and about jouno and tachi i truly hope they do that as well. i have a feeling they’re going to use the vampiric ability to heal his eyes or use yosano but i hope instead they have jouno help him adjust to learning to live without sight. it’s always good to have representation of disabilities in media. i think jouno thinks fondly of tachihara, he addressed him in a friendly manner when they reunited in S4. i would love to see more interactions

It was mid august when you got transferred to Kyoto’s high of jujutsu sorcerers. You came from abroad, at the suggestion of your teacher, who was a grade 1 sorcerer.

A few months passed since then. You were now a second year student. You were surprised at first, when you found out that you only got 3 classmates, being used to having way more than that back in your home country.

Accommodation wasn’t much of a problem. The problem has been the communication, since you could not properly speak. Your technique, cursed speech, has been considered both a gift and a curse. It’s been a good few years since you last spoke normally. Your last teacher considered it dangerous, suggesting that you don’t speak at all, unless you need it to fight, so you use sign language to communicate instead. Neither Mai, Miwa nor Mechamaru knew the sign language, so until they actually learned it, making them understand you has been hell.

You had no idea why your classmates got so excited one day, until you have been told that there will be an event. Your school was to go all the way to Tokyo to participate in a competition against the jujutsu sorcerers sister school located there.

“What are you doing? Hurry up.” said Mai as she gave you a slight push, waking you up from daydreaming.

“We’re gonna crush them this time”

“For sure”

This was your first time participating in a competition after the transfer. Actually, it was the first competition of this kind you ever got to take part of. Your teammates were certainly determined to win it, and so were you, but you didn’t really understand why they were so mean when talking about it.

When you met the other students, it became even worse. The other students weren’t any different, as they kept lighting the fuel.

You were looking at the enemy team members when your teacher, Utahime Iori called out your name and presented you to the others, as they had never seen you before.

“Huh? Another cursed speech user?” you heard a girl with short orange hair say as she looked towards a white haired boy who had his mouth covered by a high collar that was part of his uniform.

Did this mean he was a cursed speech user as well? Words couldn’t describe how excited you were to hear that. This was your chance to learn more about it, as your last teacher didn’t know how to help you gain control over it.

But that had to wait until after the competition. The school with the most curses killed in the allotted period was to win it.

Your teammates came up with a plan that, as they said, was to bring the victory to Kyoto high. You were to take care of big groups of curses, if there was to be any.

When the competition started, you did as you were told. You advanced, looking around for curses, and with Momo’s help you found some pretty fast. When you were sure you were alone, you started exorcising the curses, getting rid of them one by one.

What you didn’t know was that a curious second year student from the enemy team has been watching you as you did so. You didn’t notice until you heard a voice from behind you. You turned around and found the white haired boy exorcising a curse. You were so surprised that you didn’t even realize a curse was about to attack you until he took care of it.

“Kelp”

Huh? Did he just randomly say.. kelp? Unsure of what to do, you just looked at him.

But then he talked again.

“Salmon roe”

You started blinking rapidly, afraid that he might get annoyed if you don’t react in any way. You were unsure if he was familiar with the sign language, but it was worth giving it a try, right?

'What does that mean?' you gestured while praying that he will understand you.

Much to your surprise, he immediately responded.

'Because of my cursed speech technique I restricted my vocabulary. Aren't you the same?'

'I can’t talk. I mean, I can, but only when fighting.'

Hearing you say that, his expression changed, becoming clearly confused.

'Wait, but how do people understand you if you only say a few words that are… food ingredients?'

'Onigiri'

'Eh?'

'Onigiri ingredients'

'I see', you gestured, nodding your head in comprehension.

He really was an interesting guy. This was your chance to find out more about the cursed speech and how to master it.

You raised your head so you could face him again.

'Could you help me?'

"Salmon?" he unconsciously responded. 'Help you? With what?'

'I am scared of using it. The cursed speech. They said coming to Japan will be of use since there's people who can help. So, can you?'

It took him a few seconds to understand what you actually want, but even so, he agreed.

He motioned for you to follow him. He led you to a log, where you took a seat.

There, the two of you spent a lot of time where he explained to you as much as he knew and even tried giving you suggestions on how to use the technique at its best. You didn’t even realize how fast the time passed, not until a loud noise announced the end of the competition.

You walked back together, now talking about the most random stuff. Both of you ended up yelled at by the others for not actually helping the teams, but you couldn’t care less.

Even after the event was done, you still continued hanging out with Inumaki. As every meeting passed, you became more and more excited about the next one. You got to the point where waiting until you could see him again became painful.

Whenever the two of you met, you’d spend hours talking about your home country, about your hobbies, about your favorite meals. You could talk to him about anything, and he’d listen.

As time passed, he helped you gain the courage to use words outside the battlefield too. At his suggestion, you created your own safe words; code words, just for him to understand. You also came up with some new gestures that surprised him at first, but soon became a part of your usual conversations.

“What are they even doing?”

“Don’t ask me. I don’t even remember those signs existing”

You, using new gestures and talking only when Inumaki was around confused everybody, but it didn’t matter since you could understand each other perfectly fine, and that was all you needed.

You got to the point where you already had a strong connection with him, but he still managed to make it even stronger when, one day, he caught you off guard by making some gestures he had never done before.

'I love you'

You smiled as you hugged him tightly in response. You were happy. You were truly happy. You got a friend that understood you, a friend that helped and loved you, just the way you were.

You managed to overcome the unceasing rivalry between Kyoto and Tokyo high schools from the first time you met.

Furuba autistic headcanons

With it being April, or autism acceptance month, I wanted to finally drop my list of characters from Fruits Basket that I read as autistic! This is based a lot on my own experience, as well as that of other autistics I know or have seen talk online. I hope some people can get something out of it, feel free to tell me what you think 😊, though please refrain from getting upset that I would dare suggest your fave is autistic.

Hanajima

Before becoming able to better control her powers, she would be constantly overwhelmed by the things she heard to the point that she couldn't even really go out in public. This reads a lot like sensory overload.

Constantly picked on in school because other kids thought she was weird. Eventually reclaimed this weirdness and turned it into a whole persona.

Seems to talk usually in a relatively flat tone.

Had trouble socializing with no friends outside her family until middleschool.

Has a very funny, dry sense of humor that I find very similar to a bunch of autistics I know, including myself.

Hatsuharu

Listen. You have seen the funky little man, you have seen the way he talks, the way he acts around others. He is, and I mean this in the best way, a weirdo. I do not know how you could look at him and see a neurotypical.

Once again, like Hana, Haru is funny in a way that feels very autistic.

Very flat, dry, tone delivery. Sometimes just Says Things that make everyone else go huh??? Suuuuper blunt. Doesn't emote facially a lot of the time.

When this man sees a social norm he doesn't get he WILL NOT follow it. Pierces his ears just because his hair got flak, defends Momiji wearing whatever he wants because sometimes y'know the social rules are just dumb and don't make sense. Especially dress codes.

Sometimes says things not befitting the current tone of the situation.

Represses (masks) a lot of his emotions, leading to outbursts that seem uncharacteristic.

His main childhood trauma revolves around adults branding him as "dumb" and ridiculing him. Haru, however, is super smart and wise!! Just in an offbeat way that not everyone may get.

Machi

Reads as very "flat" emotionally to the point that others would call her boring. Also has a flat vocal delivery.

Relies on specific habits or ways of doing things or else she gets super upset (her hatred of imperfection.

Has trauma surrounding adults completely misconstruing her intentions and thinking she's doing something malicious when she's not.

Generally behaves in a way that's hard for others to understand, one of her formative moments with Yuki was him saying he wanted to "see how the world looks" through her eyes.

Once again, trouble socializing.

Tries super hard to please her parents but in the end they still see her as somehow inherently "defective."

Listen. A lot of this one and the last two are mostly vibes, hard to verbally define. You just have to look at them and trust me.

Tohru

Displays behavior very reminiscent of masking throughout the story, a huge part of her arc is about how she hides a lot of herself and has a very controlled persona. I think it would fit very well if she had other autistic behaviors that she suppresed also it helps explain why she is relatively socially adept, it's learned behavior to make people like her more.

Yes she is very good at saying what others need to hear, but especially early on she is pretty blatantly imitating her mother's words. She only gets better at getting through on a more personal level later on (see her with Rin and Akito v. early series Tohru). She does this by relating her own experiences, a very autistic way of showing empathy that often gets us written off as self centered. The way she relays things her mom said could also be seen as this, and she even worries at a few points that she's being insensitive for going on about things like that.

While emotionally repressed she is hyper empathetic and feels other's emotions so strongly she cries.

Her speech patterns are all imitated from her father and she often copies verbal things from others (see Ritchan-san). Noted in canon that people think her way of speaking is slightly off/not befitting of someone her age. Additionally, her father was polite more sarcastically, while she plays it straight and sometimes takes things very literally or fails to get the message, indicating trouble with reading tone. Has numerous strange verbal tics, including saying parts of her internal monologue out loud without context.

Very expressive with her hands including waving them around and flapping them up and down.

Does have a bit of trouble with accidental insensitivity in social interactions, like how she constantly fixates on her mom and realizes that might bug the Sohma.

Has trouble paying attention in school since it doesn't have much to do with her interests

Her only friend until she was a middle schooler was her mom

Has a pretty unique outlook on things compared to others, people seem to think she's pretty eccentric. There's always a "this girl is nice but in an odd way, she's our weirdo and we love her" vibe.

Sometimes has an "inappropriate" emotional response to situations

Has a lot of trouble with change, similar to Akito. Which oh, look at the time, next hc coming up.

But first, a disclaimer. It is cathartic for me to read Akito this way, but with that reading comes the baggage that she would, mayhaps, be showing a more negative side of things... It doesn't bother me since it's a joint hc with other characters and she does develop at the end but yeah, general villain hc baggage. This is in no way me trying to excuse her being The Worst being autistic doesn't absolve you of being able to do wrong . Also, a lot of these points can and do have other explanations related to her upbringing, but things can be for more than 1 reason. With that said, she really strongly comes off as autistic to me, in a way that's sorta hard to explain. I wrote a lot more for her than the other, both because I felt I needed more to convince people and that this headcanon was more sensitive and I needed to be careful in my explanation. Also hey! She's my special interest within a special interest.

Akito

Shown to have a dislike of summer weather due to heat and brightness, could be due to sensory issues in tandem with sickness things. Also covers her ears when people raise their voice sometimes which is partially her trying to shut down opposition but also 🤔 can read a different way. She'd also avoids louder Juuni like Ritsu and Ayame because she can't handle them.

Wears pretty much the same outfit every single day. Said outfit is also pretty loose fitting.

Always seen sitting in a pretty unconventional way. Evidence:

Of course this is also the isolated in a cult thing and there is a level of her purposefully doing things to intimidate but: doesn't follow a lot of social rules (overly touchy with strangers, legit doesn't get that what she's doing is wrong, ect.). Repeatedly confused when people indicate she should act otherwise without explanation. Has a breakdown when this comes to a head and approximately says that "they" shouldn't expect her to know "common sense" if "they" never explained it to her, that the way that she was was her "common sense."

Often talks in a way uncharacteristic of her age when shown as a child in a more faux mature/pretentious way. Might just be the translation and idk how to explain it but her speech as an adult also seems off from what one would normally use in conversation. Additionally, when she tries to fake being friendly in her intro chapter, it comes of as extremely stiff and unconvincing.

Generally displays behavior that could be thought of as childish as an adult, but a lot of this behavior could also read as autistic (covering ears, emotional deregulation and meltdowns, ignorance of basic social norms, ect.). It's also important to note that she knows that this behavior makes her seem younger and more helpless to the older zodiac and uses it as a manipulation tactic. Has issues regarding people treating her like a child or only hanging out with her because of pity. While she does weaponize it, we can tell that this grates on her, as seen with her finally blowing up on Kureno, which is partially triggered by the maids saying some sorta infantalizing stuff about her. Irl, a lot of autistic adults and teens struggle with being infantalized for our behavior generally or treated as little babies that can do no wrong. Even in fandom, you see people doing stuff like jumping to call autistic adult characters, such as Entrapta from Shera, "minor coded." It is also common for us to have at least one bad experience with someone hanging around us out of pity. This is something that really gave me a similar feeling in Akito's arc. She's not a baby and she can understand and do better if she is given the chance to learn and break from all the freaky cult indoctrination she's been subjected to instead of just being constantly enabled. In the end, a lot of her growth is represented by her showing that she is capable of changing and being independent.

Shows particular difficulty with socialization, often sits by herself spacing out at social events. A lot of her fear is rooted in the fact that she doesn't know how normal relationships work, becoming overly reliant on the curse because she doesn't know how to make friends.

Clings desperately onto the notion of being "special" and in some way superior to others to be worthy and to make up for perceived inherent "flaws." It's the nd gifted kid burnout vibes for me.

Easily bothered by things that don't bother others. Feels emotions very strongly to the point of getting physically ill and has bad emotional regulation.

Relatively good at reading others in an analytical sense (though has more trouble when it comes to seeing how they feel about her since she's wildly delusional) but brings up her observations in a very cold, detached way and hurts people even on the rare occasion she didn't mean to. Has extreme trouble connecting to others and understanding their point of view. This makes her come off as pretty unempathetic even though that might not fully be the case. Also thinks that people like Momiji are trying to look down on her when they try to empathize with her. A lot of why Tohru can get through to her is that she manages to convince Akito that she's not condescending by relating shared traits and experiences. As I said earlier, autistics often empathize by sharing their own experiences with someone, and I know I often have an easier time confiding in other autistics because of a fear of being seen as lesser by those that don't understand me. I think the connection between these charachters and the way that Tohru manages to reach Akito like that while others couldn't makes a lot of sense through an autistic lense!

Has "cold" emotional reactions sometimes even to things that do make her upset. For example, how sort of calm and detached she acted after her father's death can make her seem uncaring. However, we know that this event did mess her up a lot and she is still (poorly) dealing with a lot of grief from the death of her father years later.

Copies mannerisms from others, the most blatant example is with Ren, who she directly parrots lines from as a child to Yuki.

Partly just her posturing, but gestures a lot with her hands when she talks. Also seen several times clutching her hands in her hair.

there’s a real serious issue in this fandom with not understanding what queer terminology actually means or implies, especially when applied to a fictional narrative.

i’m specifically talking about ‘coding’, here. (if i were in a more meme-y mood, i might have said ‘the atla fandom found out about the term “gay-coding” and haven’t shut up since’.)

to the people who say ‘zuko is gay-coded’, i have this to say: you keep using that word. i do not think it means what you think it means. because he isn’t. i’m sorry, but he’s not! and the fact that this is such a prevalent claim in this fandom is distressing, bc it says to me that none of y’all know what gay-coding is or when and how to apply it! please, i’m begging you, go and look up these terms and what they mean and when they should be used before actually trying to plug them into your critical analysis, because when you misuse them and then call other people delusional for disagreeing with you it casts a pall over the entire fandom and is, i think, the root of some of the worst toxicity this fandom has to offer.

and the thing is, there are cases where gay-coding would apply--for instance, a couple series that are famous for queerbaiting their audience by coding their main characters as being attracted to one another (sometimes even despite their openly stated sexualities) come to mind, but those shows bare no similarities at all to atla and how zuko was written and portrayed! (and it would be funny, if it weren’t so obnoxious and infuriatingly wide-spread throughout the fandom, because the only queer couple we actually seen on-screen in either show wasn’t even queer-coded in any respect, and they’re canonically bi! [yes, i’m shading korrasami, or more accurately i’m shading bryke for refusing to give ka the build-up and development they deserved].)

this absolutely isn’t to say that headcanoning zuko as gay is a bad thing or invalid in any respect. (although the tendency for zukka shippers to do this specifically to keep zuko away from katara and/or invalidate his canon relationship/attraction to girls is more than a little eyebrow raising. especially since sokka is usually allowed to be bi, bc fans have no problem letting sukka stay in the background bc it’s no real threat, while jetko shippers are happy to have both boys be bi. [possibly bc katara is less a threat to jetko bc jetkotara is every bit as valid as any single ship between the three, but zukka can’t exactly let katara join in, and if the potential exists for zuko to be attracted to her then canon giving them the far deeper emotional bond becomes a threat to zukka’s existence? idk for sure--you be the judge.]) i prefer to hc zuko as bi (and always have, long before the atla renaissance), bc i don’t think zuko being attracted to boys is outside the realm of possibility, and it isn’t a threat to my ship since zuko&katara had a deep and emotional bond in canon that is very easy to develop further into something that becomes explicitly romantic--but the headcanon itself isn’t really the problem (although what it’s often in service to can be).

it’s the strange insistence that this is the only way to read his character, bc he was coded that way and so anyone who doesn’t see it must be too straight to understand--and i really shouldn’t have to say why and how that is so incredibly fucking insulting. (the ‘hetero lenses’ comment wasn’t cute when it came from bryke six years ago, and the same sentiment being repackaged and delivered by zukka shippers ain’t cute now.)

calling zuko gay-coded not only demonstrates ignorance as to what the term actually means, and how to usefully apply it in critical analysis, but also validates the frankly bullshit insertion of institutionalized homophobia in the world of atla where it was neither needed, nor wanted, nor ever hinted at in canon. as a queer woman i’m still infuriated by one fucking comic panel shoving institutionalized and systemic homophobia into a world where it was entirely unnecessary (and doing this in the first installment of the franchise showcasing a queer relationship??? making korra and asami worried about ‘coming out’ when they could have just gone on to have cute adventures together and tell people ‘hey we’re dating’ and have everyone else be ‘that’s awesome =DDD’ [because it is, in fact, possible to just have a world without homophobia i promise!!!!!] double yikes, i’m still pissed at bryke about it), and i doubly hate that ‘zuko is gay coded’ has become so widespread that ‘ozai hates him bc he’s gay’ has become a staple in that part of the fandom.

not only does making zuko gay and implying (or outright stating) that ozai hated and abused him because of it completely undermine zuko’s character arc by making his abuse about his sexuality rather than ozai’s toxic pride and anger at seeing himself reflected in his ‘weak’ son, but it comes very close to outright stating that abuse and trauma are inherently gay experiences, and they aren’t!!! they really aren’t, i promise!!!

abuse and trauma narratives exist outside of ‘my dad hates me because i’m gay’. and, quite frankly, there are MORE THAN ENOUGH queer trauma narratives out in the world. we do not need to start trying to retroactively make them canon in a series where they didn’t exist! if you’re gay and see yourself in zuko and project your own experiences on him, that’s understandable and valid. that does not make zuko gay-coded. and honestly, the insistence that he is makes very little sense to me, because you’re essentially trying to give the show credit for work you put into interpreting the characters! why would you want to do that? why not own your own headcanons and take credit for them, rather than insisting they are canon and everyone else is wrong for not seeing them??? like, i’ve said before that i’ve always headcanoned zuko (and katara) as bi, and even support it with my interpretations of evidence from the show, but the difference between ‘i think zuko is bi’ and ‘zuko is definitely gay-coded’ is that i know that bi zuko is my interpretation of canon, and that it is work i’m putting into the show that wasn’t actually intended by the creators/writers, no matter how much sexual tension i read into the jetko swordfight.

and like, zuko’s character arc doesn’t actually parallel a queer one all that well to begin with. it’s easy enough to do the work and twist it sideways just enough to make the general points fit, but the fact is, zuko’s arc is not one of self-discovery. it’s not one of coming to understand something fundamental about himself that he can’t change, that he was hated for, and coming out to his father in a dramatic confrontation where he shows that he understands himself and doesn’t need his father’s acceptance to be fulfilled.

zuko’s arc is actually one of trauma and healing. and those can (and often are--like i said, there are more than enough queer trauma narratives in the world, atla really doesn’t need to be one of them) be part of queer narratives, for sure! but they aren’t uniquely queer. and zuko’s confrontation with ozai during the eclipse doesn’t read like a ‘coming out’ at all. (yes, i’ve seen that post. yes, i rolled my eyes and moved on, bc unlike some people, i’m capable of not clowning on correctly tagged posts i disagree with.) zuko is specifically confronting ozai over his abuse, because his arc wasn’t about discovering anything fundamental about himself (and therefore realizing that ozai was hating him for something he couldn’t change)--it was about realizing that he was not at fault for the way his father treated him. it was also about realizing that the fire nation was broken and corrupt at its core, and that his father was an aspect of that he needed to break away from so that he could help the world begin to heal.

he says it himself:

Zuko: No, I've learned everything! And I've had to learn it on my own! Growing up, we were taught that the Fire Nation was the greatest civilization in history. And somehow, the War was our way of sharing our greatness with the rest of the world. What an amazing lie that was. The people of the world are terrified by the Fire Nation. They don't see our greatness. They hate us! And we deserve it! We've created an era of fear in the world. And if we don't want the world to destroy itself, we need to replace it with an era of peace and kindness.

making this about zuko being gay and rejecting ozai’s homophobia, rather than zuko learning fundamental truths about the world and about his home and about how there was something deeply wrong with his nation that needed to be fixed in order for the world to heal (and, no, ‘homophobia’ is not the answer to ‘what is wrong with the fire nation’, i’m still fucking pissed at bryke about that), misses the entire point of his character arc. this is the culmination of zuko realizing that he should never have had to earn his father’s love, because that should have been unconditional from the start. this is zuko realizing that he was not at fault for his father’s abuse--that speaking out of turn in a war meeting in no way justified fighting a duel with a child.

is that first realization (that a parent’s love should be unconditional, and if it isn’t, then that is the parent’s fault and not the child’s) something that queer kids in homophobic households/families can relate to? of course it is. but it’s also something that every other abused kid, straight kids and even queer kids who were abused for other reasons before they even knew they were anything other than cishet, can relate to as well. in that respect, it is not a uniquely queer experience, nor is it a uniquely queer story, and zuko not being attracted to girls (which is what a lot of it seems to boil down to, at the end of the day--cutting down zuko’s potential ships so that only zukka and a few far more niche ships are left standing) is not necessary to his character arc. nor does it particularly make sense.

(and before anyone brings up his date with jin--a) he enjoyed it when she kissed him, and b) he was a traumatized, abused child going out on a first date. of course he was fucking awkward. have you ever met a teenage boy????)

anyway, uh, that was a lot of words, so have a tl;dr: zuko is not gay-coded. there is nothing uniquely gay (or even uniquely queer) about his character arc or characterization, and he was certainly not coded gay in an attempt to sneak a queer character past the censors. if anyone involved with atla was gonna try that, it would’ve been in lok, and as established, they didn’t even manage to queer-code the actual queer relationship before the last few minutes of the final episode. headcanoning zuko as gay is absolutely fine (though if it’s only done to keep him away from female characters he may otherwise be attracted to, that smells more like misogyny than anything else), but insisting that this reading is the only one that makes sense, and anyone who doesn’t agree must be straight (hello, queer woman here making this insanely long thinkpiece) is very much not.

ship what you like, but stop trying to invalidate other ships and other interpretations of characters just to make your ship seem more plausible. it’s really not a good look.

Hello, please excuse me i came here to talk a bit and share with you my experience with the "fandom" in which Satoru and some other certain characters tend to be mistreated in. Right before i had to shut off from many many parts after i learned how 80% don't really seem to understand any of the characters i would like to talk about how before it almost altered my view on them, almost.

So first it was about that one comment of Gege's where he said that Gojo is not the type to have a girlfriend and will never het one, likewise i agree with that, he has never shown interest in anyone throughout the story, apart from maybe Suguru. Now you know that there are all sorts of shippers and one of them being cishets that are all about pushing heteronorm onto him even if it doesn't make any sense to do so. Which reminds me of that time where i saw someone talk how Satoru already has a trope set up for him, that trope being Utahime and solely because he "teases" her unlike anyone else according to them. The deal with the truth that Utahime dislikes Satoru, even if it's not genuine will somehow always be ignored and replaced with whatever hopeful or wishful thinking fans have just so they can latch onto any so called crumbs. I don't wish to be a downer but doesn't Satoru still respect those that are strong? The fact that it became like a reflex to make fun of someone just because they are still unable to rank up is telling, and someone will try and convince me that he does it because he wants to protect her lol also as much as I'd like to jump on that copium about a minor character's only purpose in the story is to be some sort of romance subplot, I'd have to stop right there, people will ignore the fact that Satoru is not exactly an empathetic person, not saying he's not but he certainly doesn't have it in him to recognize others emotions in order to draw the line. Does the whole idea of jjk jump over their head? Isn't Gege trying to express the misogyny that's rooted within it?

People will bring up how they've known each other for 10 years and how she is the one he trusts the most lol, forgetting altogether that she was the only person he could actually go to in Kyoto that is an adult cause other characters weren't available back then. Isn't it admirable that she at least tolerates him? They work and trust each other because it's part of their job, Satoru has put trust in other people aswell, Shoko, Ijichi and Nanami especially.

Point is, i had to confine my self into a small part of the place where people actually think rationally and not with their shipping goggles because if head canoning is all they have then i said everything. Like using or nit picking every little thing and turning into something to fit a delusional stereotype such as "Mappa showcased Satoru ending his phone call with Utahime at 3:41 in that episode, we can reverse it to 143 so it means i love you" and I'm thinking, how is that relevant? Even if it was any other person I'd too find it extremely stupid, choosing to end the phone call at that exact moment just to show some coded message? I'm gonna end the rant here because that was still one hell of an experience i had and the amount of stuff i had to filter from my search list is horrific. But tell me what do you think? Do you think that Satoru likes anyone? Or is that just fans coming up with their own hcs because they like to self project? Because not a single take did i read from them before that wasn't an outright reach.

Those are a lot of ideas, let me go little by little.

Regarding Gege’s comment about Satoru “I don’t see Gojo being faithful to a specific woman” I have this post. Holding to what that phrase means without too many assumptions it means that Satoru wouldn’t have a monogamous relationship with a woman. Of course, Satoru is a character with development so if we considerer that comment with the context that provide the character, we can assume that Satoru is not hetero. This conclusion is the result of considering his relationship with Suguru, and the possibility that both were in love. So, we can think in Satoru being in any spectrum except being hetero. However, it doesn’t take women off from the equation, he could be bi or pan, for example.

About gojohime like a ship, I would first give an overall consideration about ships. A ship doesn't need to be close to the canon or canon, ships are meant for fanfics, fanart and etc, are the result of fans imagination so there will always be some quota of invention. Even couples that are confirmed in canon, get fanarts and fanfic where they do things they haven’t done in canon, so there is always some invention. Nevertheless, this doesn’t mean at all that any ship is equally valid. Ships that romanticize any form of abuse or/and oppression are problematic, and people can’t expect to avoid the problem just by saying that “fiction is fiction”.

Back to gojohime, as you say this ship is misogynist because it is the result of the idea that love can prevail even over the lack of respect. This is what being named in gender studies as “the myths of romantic love”, it built an imaginary of what is love and what is a romantic relationship that naturalizes the inequality of man and woman and the violence in it. There is no evidence that Gege is implying the idea that Satoru could have romantic feelings for Utahime or otherwise. As you said, the “evidence” provided by the people who push this ship canonically are weak and with no foundation.

What I found interesting on this matter is how fans read a story. If I have to give a quick interpretation of why these fans ship gojo and utahime, or built their fanfic about Noaya under the idea that he just didn’t find the “right woman”. I would say that it is not just a matter of not understanding the story, it is a matter of having internalized imaginaries like “romantic love”. How a person reads a story is directly related to their culture (there are research in the anthropological field about this). In our cultures, the idea of “romantic love” is very strong, and requires a lot of self-deconstruction to imagine other ways of love outside the naturalized violence of patriarchy. I purposolly refer to it as a part of cultural matrix because people tend to think that is inherent to only hetero relantionship, but often some forms of it prevail in non-hetero relantionship. However, is in the lgbtiq+ field and feminism where you find the strong critics and the praxis of other forms to understand love. In summary, the issue about gojohime is reception and representation.

Satoru is meant to be a character who is perfect at everything except his personality. I wouldn’t say that Satoru is a misogynist character like Naoya, but he reproduces what's call as micro-machismo (micro-misoginy). Those are ideas, forms, or ways of acting that are misogynist but aren’t performed by the person with the intention to be misogynist. And it happens because we have been socialized in this culture.

Why Satoru tease Utahime? Satoru doesn’t hate her nor is indifferent to her. If Utahime called for help he would help her without problem. He teases her because it is easy for him, since she is weaker and she is annoyed by his teasing (doesn’t have a point to tease someone who doesn’t mind, in teasing there is always something kind of sadistic). But he has his limit, if we go back to his jokes, they are jokes that Satoru believes are harmless. And I said “Satoru believe” on purpose, because what we think is not always what happens. To be honest, there is not enough information to know if Satoru’s jokes had a major impact on Utahime. I believe the biggest consequence is the fact that she dislikes him and won’t ever be her friend or lover. However, Utahime doesn’t hate Satoru (the absence of love doesn’t imply hate and I wish people would understand that). Of course, in her bio it is stated that she hates Satoru, but in other characters it is stated they hate some type of food, so let’s not take that so literally. Utahime hates Satoru in the sense that she hates to spend time with him, but she doesn’t wish him death or is willing to actually kill him or do great harm.

Fans are very radical, if it is not white is black, people's emotions tend to be more complicated than love or hate, and those aren’t the only feelings inside of us. Utahime dislikes Satoru, but she thinks of him like an ally.

Back to Satoru’s bad personality, more than putting him like someone who is not empathic, I would say that he does use his privilege of being the strongest to be annoying. Basically because nobody can punch him to make him shut up. In my opinion, and I can point to a lot of evidence, Satoru is an empathic person. I believe the problem is that people think that empathic people are always with a hand over their hearts and sweet words, which is wrong. Empathy is nothing else than the ability to understand and share the feelings of other people. Is not a six sense like some people in tumblr are portraying in their post. Satoru does understand other people's feelings like we get to see in his interaction with Megumi, he knows exactly why Megumi did what he did in the baseball game and he even understands his mindset about himself and sorcery. Plus, the fact that he is doing all this to help the next generation to have a better life than he has is the result of his empathy. Satoru’s dream is altruistic and that is something we can relate with solidarity and empathy.

Some people believe he only cares for the strongest and that is wrong. He wants students to become strong so they can take care of themselve and make their way in this world. Besides, we have no evidence of him mistreating weak people like the Zenin clan did. Probably most of Satoru’s students are weak, however he seems to do the same effort for any person. Plus, it is impossible to understand why he chose a different path from Suguru if he only cared for the strong.

About your question, if he likes someone, he was in love with Suguru, I believe there is enough evidence to support this idea. Not only an interpretation of his whole arc, also the description of Satoru’s ideal type and Satoru’s first thoughts about Suguru when they met that are commented in the fanbook. Those are like some hints that help to confirm this idea. No matter if you think their love is romantic or platonic, the love is there.
