The Killing Joke (Alan Moore, Brian Bolland)

The Killing Joke, written by Alan Moore and illustrated by Brian Bolland, was published by DC Comics in 1988 as a one-shot comic and has been continuously held in print since. The plot revolves around a psychological battle between Batman and the Joker, who’s recently escaped from Arkham Asylum. Paying a visit to the asylum, Batman tells the Joker that he’s been thinking about how it’s gonna end between them: with one, or both of them dying. He admits that he’s paying a visit to the Joker so that he can say that he at least tried to prevent that outcome. When he grabs the Joker’s hand, however, the chalk smears off onto his glove and he realizes that the Joker has been replaced with a decoy and has actually escaped from Arkham Asylum. It’s then revealed that the Joker intends to drive Commissioner Gordon insane to prove that even Gotham’s most honorable citizen can go mad after “one bad day”. The story then flashes back to the Joker’s early life, before he went insane, explaining his origin story. The man who became the Joker was an engineer who quit his job to become a comedian, only to fail miserably at it. Desperate to support his wife who is expecting, he agrees to break two criminals into the plant where he worked in exchange for a large sum of cash. Before he can go through with the plan, however, the police inform him that his wife has died in an accident involving an electric baby bottle heater. Overcome with grief, he tries to withdraw from the plan, but the criminals threaten him into keeping his end of the bargain. Once inside the plant, they almost immediately run into security personnel, leading to a chase. The criminals are gunned down and the soon-to-be Joker finds himself face to face with Batman who’s investigating the scene. To escape Batman, the engineer jumps into a vat of chemicals and exits the facility through a pipe leading to the outside. To his utter horror, he discovers that the toxic chemicals in the vat have bleached his skin, stained his lips bright red, and turned his hair green. The combination of the intense and traumatic events that happened that night lead him to go mad, as he bursts out into uncontrollable laughter. It’s here that we witness the Birth of the Joker. Flashing back to the present day, Joker captures Commissioner Gordon, taking him to an abandoned amusement park. He then submits him to disturbing and humiliating torture. Batman rescues the commissioner but in the ensuing chaos the Joker escapes. Batman is able to track down the Joker, however, and in the final moments of the story the Joker tells Batman a joke which makes the typically stone-faced hero burst out laughing. They share a laugh together and then on the last cell of the comic, Batman grabs the Joker aggressively, leaving what happens to him open to the interpretation of the reader. What makes the Killing Joke so special is that prior to this comic, the Joker’s origin story was rather unknown, being left to baseless speculation. This comic, however, provides the reader with a heartbreaking story that explains why the Joker became what he is today, finally giving an explanation to his seemingly senseless madness. I’d recommend this comic to anyone ages 12 and up who enjoys Batman stories.

Me and Simon have been dating for about 2 weeks. He's never really into affection but, I recognize he's trying. I swept the room in front of me and nodded as a go. We were on our way to grab Soap after a failed Intel mission. We ran across a few guys and went to silently kill them, one of them turned and shouted causing a brawl.

I kicked and punched, using my knife at times to defeat these guys. Gaz went ahead to grab Soap, I looked at Ghost, he was so gorgeous when fighting. He turned and his eyes widened. "Y/N, LOOK O-" before he could finish I felt a sharp pain..I yelped and fell forward, Price taking the distraction to run and attack the guy. I gasped for air, holding my stomach. Ghost ran over and picked me up with a strong grip. Gaz came back with Soap and we started out. I felt my vision get blurry, sitting in the helicopter.

Price pulled up my shirt just above the wound and had Ghost hold it. "This is gonna hurt-" He warned. I nodded and he stuck his fingers into my wound. I screamed and thrashed and Simon held me down, shushing me and comforting me. I looked at him and realized he had tears in his eyes. Price dug in and grabbed the bullet out. He cleaned me up and put a patch on me, I blacked out from the pain.

When I woke, I was in a hospital bed. I looked around and saw Simon. "Si-" I began and his head snapped up. "Please- dont."

"Im sorry.." I apologized, looking down.

"Maybe... maybe this won't work out like you think it will."

"What?" I turned back.

"I don't think we should be together-" He mumbled, I could tell he didn't mean it. He was upset he let you get hurt, he was upset he couldn't save you in time, he was upset cause he thought he could loose you. And he never wanted that. This was the easiest way out.

"Simon," I took his hand. "I know you don't wanna break up. You're just scared. I understand, but it won't happen again. It was a slip up. I survived this time, I can survive more, I swear."

"You promise-?" His voice cracked, I nodded. He wrapped his arms around my stomach. "I love you, Y/N."

"I love you, too..."

Bucky pulls up on the gator to the front of the house. He sees a woman waiting on his porch looking a little annoyed. He gets out of the gator opening the back of it to let the dogs out. They run to the porch to their water bowls as he follows.

"Hello ma'am, is there something I could help you with?" Bucky asks.

"I'm Ms. Grant from social services, im here to check over your house! Where have you been?"

"I've been working on the farm. I can give a tour of it after I show you the house." Bucky smiles he opens the door of the house welcoming her inside.

"Okay give me a minute to look around." Ms. Grant says, "which room will Ms. L/n be in?"

"Last door on the left. Mine is right across the hall." Bucky explains. "I'll make some coffee while you look around."

"That would be great thank you." She smiles before she goes into the living room.

"Oh and on the desk in there I have a binder of all the papers that I was told I needed." He peaks in the. She looks at the binder and nods. He goes back to the kitchen beginning to make a pot of coffee. He grabs his phone looking at the time. It's almost noon. He knows you started school last week and are having a terrible time. He wants to let you know but he doesn't want to bother you during school. He texts you telling you to call him after school. He nervously sits at the table waiting for the woman to come back.

It's takes her a few minutes before she comes in checking the kitchen over. Bucky tries to control his knee from bouncing but he can't. This was the only thing stopping him from gaining custody of you.

"I think it's time for the tour of the property."

You had gotten the text during lunch. You've nervously been waiting. You got on the bus and texted him. You tell him you'll be able to call in a few minutes. You haven't really talked to anyone at your new school. You doubted you'd be here for long so you were just waiting and counting down the days until you could be in marvelfalls again.

"Hey weirdo." You don't look up choosing to just stare at you phone instead. "Oh don't ignore me." Someone pushes you head but you ignore them and look out the window.

"Come on L/n we just want to talk." A new voice says.

"Leave me alone Colton." You say as the bus stops. You stand grabbing you bag and hurry off of it. You look around noticing you have zero clue where you are. You are lost now. You sigh pulling out your phone and calling bucky. Not to help you get home since obviously he doesn't know where to go. You just wanted to know what he wanted to tell you.

"Hey doll! How was school?"

"Fine I guess." You begin walking down the road. You put him on speaker and pull up a map on your phone.

"Well the house just evaluated and I should find out if I'm getting my foster license by Friday!"

"Really? So if you get your license how long till I get to go back to the farm?"

"Probably by next Monday."

"That's amazing! I hate this school. I miss the dogs.."

"Only the dogs?" He asks.

"I guess I miss the horses too." You tease.

"Wow rude." He laughs.

"Okay I have to go... Bye Buck."

"Bye doll."
