hii, not sure if you still check asks on this blog🤡 but I was reading your outline for your rewrite and holy SHIT!
it's so good!! I just got to the party where it's revealed that nakime is/was zenitsu's biological mom (which is so *chefs kiss* btw).
the main reason I'm here tho, is because of this:
She’s only holding his head, and does a whole literal Shakespearean monologue, inspired by Hamlet and the scene with the Prince holding the Skull of Yorick to further emphasize how she triumphed despite her shortcomings. It’s pretty cool, feel free to ask me about it.
So here I am.. asking about it. How did you come up with the idea of a Shakespearean monologue? (unless this is done in the manga which I didn't read) Do you have any drafts of the monologue? 👀
I got you lol. This should be a part of the folder called "part 2", but here's the draft:
Tumblr media
[ID: A written passage. Transcript: “So, everyone died except for Hamlet’s friend, Horatio. The foreign prince of Fortinbras would then swoop in and claim the kingdom of Denmark for themselves. The end.” “That’s... quite a story.” Douma comments. “I heard you mention a poison-tipped blade? That part reminds me of you, my dear.” Then he gasps. “Oh, ooh! Are you trying to say you’re Prince Hamlet, and I’m King Claudius?” “Well, you only wanted me to tell you about it, nothing else.” She smiles widely. “But, if you insist on drawing comparisons, I’ll happily draw my own. “I am the prince, but I am also his wit. His mask. His cup with the poisonous union. His calculated thirst for revenge. But I am also Laertes with his poisoned sword, unabated and envenomed. “Do you see the difference now? My blade has never turned itself on me. I was not defeated by my hesitance. I was not killed by my own treachery. I believed in no gods with qualms against self-slaughter. I knew my faults and made them my strengths. I have won in every way.” Shinobu chuckles. “I apologize if I sound like I’m rubbing my victory in your face. Really, you’re lucky I even stuck around; all the other souls you’ve tricked and lied to moved on without a second thought, without a care for their poor, heartless jester who’s rotten flesh would become earth, and earth to loam, then loam for stopping a cheap beer barrel. You’re not as high and mighty as you think.” Douma gives her a strange, unreadable look as his face slowly rots away. His rainbow eyes scan her expression, but Shinobu knows there’s nothing for him there. Not with the porcelain mask covering her face. End ID.]
I wanted to give Shinobu a unique interest to help her connect more with the world of KNY, especially when the Taisho period is very famous for marking the rapid industrialization and westernization of Japan (apart from the Meiji Restoration period), particularly in the spreading of European literature and arts. She's incredibly intelligent and I knew her family would try to make their kids get into these subjects since they were doctors/pharmacists and probably had money to do so.
Shinobu should also be allowed to be quirky. I headcanon her as autistic and I wanted to show her neurodivergency in a way that integrates well with her arc. Love her so much.

Ezreal, Kayn, Yone Reverse AU Headcanons (100 Followers Special)
The title was the easiest way I could put it, but it's headcanons for an AU where Ezreal/Kayn/Yone are league players and the reader is a playable champion in the game. Thank you so much everyone for a hundred followers! I hope you'll accept this post as a small gift of thanks. I also find Reverse AUs a super fun concept so lemme know if you want more posts like this
Ezreal
(I just had to do him, there's no content for him and his voice actor is literally a host on League Proguides asldkfjad)
Ezreal's been playing League since the earlier seasons and ever since he was allowed to get his hands on a computer. He essentially knows the ins and outs of the game and is a die hard fan
Despite having good knowledge and skill with all champs, there was something about you and your abilities that Ezreal loved. After one game he already had a perfect feel of your champion and managed to get a triple (maybe even quadra) kill. He knew you were the next one to main
Give it a week, two max and he had Mastery 7 on you with minimum mastery points. Give it a month and you'll be the champion that he's played the most out of all time
He loves playing you but if you're ever banned, he'll accept that he'll have to play another champ. But if the enemy team has you, he feels unhealthily guilty every time he sends you respawning back at the fountain
Ezreal also loves to geek out on the lore. He's read up on everything about you, your biography, your short stories and he's watched all the cinematics you're included in. He's searched for your fanart and has probably set you as his wallpaper on his computer. In his settings, the voice line volume is maxed out, he loves hearing your monologues or interactions with other champions
A shameless simp. He's ended up crushing on you and he's going to embrace it. He's read all the self insert content for you and has probably written his own. He also gets pouty about any other champ that canonically gets to interact with you in the lore
He is a shameless but also a broke simp. He hasn't bought your skins but he's managed to gain a couple through Hextech chests and many, many rerolls
If you're selected for a music project like K/DA or True Damage, someone save Ezreal's heart because he's not going to be able to handle it. He’s bought the album, he’s learnt the lyrics and he’s learning the dances
Kayn
Kayn is a pretty tryhard player. He was previously dedicated to another game and only played League casually, but when you were released as a new champion, Kayn made the switch to focus on League. Your abilities just worked so well with his playstyle, give it enough time for him to perfect his skills and he could tell that he would be able to 1v5 the entire enemy team with you
After many months, Kayn's now known as a dedicated (Y/N) one-trick pony. If he streams or has a YouTube channel he's probably going to hold the title for the best (Y/N)-player in the region. Every kill and outplay he's flexing his Level 7 mastery and eternals
If you get banned, Kayn is straight up dodging, he doesn't care how long the wait time for the next game will be. Does he get autofilled into a role you're not made for? No problem, change the runes and itemisation and he's all good to play you
The only times he’s not playing you is if it’s a special game mode (like ARAM or One for All) or if he’s playing with friends and trying dumb strategies. But even then you can bet he’ll be thinking how much easier his game would be if he just selected you
If the enemy team has you in their composition, he’ll be a complete savage and tear the enemy apart on their lack of technique with you. He can see all the mistakes and errors, only solidifying how he’s the best (Y/N) player
Kayn never really took much interest in the lore of League but once you were released, he checked it out. He thinks the entire lore is too convoluted to follow as a whole but he’s keeping tabs on anything you’re involved in. He'll never admit it but he isn't particularly happy if you have a significant other in lore
He has bought all your skins and chromas. Even the legacy and hextech skins he's spent his money to get his hands on one way or another. Despite this, he actually likes playing with your default skin sometimes. It expresses your lore and personality best and it also makes him feel nostalgic
Kayn couldn't care less if people flame him personally but if anyone flames you as a “dumb” or “brainless champ” then to Kayn they've pretty much asked for death. He can be extremely savage and toxic if he wants to be, it's almost like he's another person. If his account gets banned, he doesn't care. He'll just start a new one. He’s defended you and that’s what matters
Yone
Yone is like an old man with technology. He would only play League casually but he's quite passionate about all the theory and techniques involved in the game. He knows all the concepts and what all the champions can do but he just can't seem to connect his mind and fingers so he ends up as a rather average League player
That all changed when he tried to play you, however. Even though you weren't the easiest champion to play, you were the easiest to understand to him. Whenever he played you, he was able to display just how much knowledge he had of the game and his win rate soared. It took some time but you were the first – and only – champion he has a Mastery 7 on
Yone appreciates all the content relating to you as it was clear how much time and effort was put into your design, gameplay and lore. Your biography in Runeterra is extremely entertaining, your splash art is phenomenal with lots of hidden symbolism and foreshadowing to your lore and your voice lines in-game compliment your personality perfectly. He also goes out of his way to listen to your cinematic theme song, it's absolutely beautiful to him
You are by far Yone's favourite champ to listen to. While all the other champions trash talk and roast their enemies, you were respectful but confident when up against the enemy team, but could be savage if you witnessed any injustice, much like Yone's attitude when he plays League
When you were a part of the Spirit Blossom event (or if you have a skin with a similar aesthetic to it), Yone’s heart raced when he first laid his eyes on your splash heart. He had a complete internal panic, he’s never felt this way for a game character before, was this normal? If you were also part of Spirit Blossom’s dating sim or something similar, Yone would act as though he is completely unphased by the event, playing your route with a straight face (but his cheeks burning red)
The instant he heard of Yone's fondness of you, Yasuo gifted him with an official figurine of you. It was rather embarrassing and Yone keeps it away from prying eyes, but he'd be lying if he said he didn't like it
Your characterisation is so expertly done, it makes you so realistic and Yone can't help but let his mind wander sometimes and imagine what life would be like if you were real. You'd undoubtedly be good friends, perhaps even more, he’ll never truly know

Putting on Hairs: Audition Day
Primary Pairing? Trio?: YuuAyu... Setsu? Words: ~4.2k Rating: G, maybe light T for some implications? AU: Theater, Werewolf, Werebeast, Monster, Cryptid, Angel, Demon, Eldrich Horror
----------
Author’s Note: I’ve no idea how real theaters work, so anything that may be off with the timeline or proper procedure or whatever, I’ll just have to excuse as author ignorance, or handwave away by this theater being different, in many ways. That said, thank you lonelypond for fielding the questions I’ve sent thus far.
----------
“Ayumu!” A voice called from a few rows up. “Up here! Up here!”
“Yuu-chan?” Ayumu had to consciously keep her own volume down due to her surprise on seeing her girlfriend. “Shhh!” She added, holding a finger to her lips.
Yuu simply chuckled in response as Ayumu moved up the aisle. Well, it wasn’t like the twin-tailed girl was being any louder than the blonde sitting nearby. Ohara, was it? The theater’s patron, or one of them at least.
“I saved you a seat.” Yuu said with a grin as Ayumu reached her.
“Thank you.” Ayumu replied as she sat.
She was pretty sure they both knew the gesture was unnecessary as there were literally hundreds of empty seats, but it was the thought that counted. Ayumu loved that part of Yuu, always seeking little ways to make her feel special, even simple and unnecessary ones.
As for why the seats were empty, it was because this was merely an audition session. The only people in the theater today were cast and crew. And the cast were all up on stage, ready to make their bids for their potential roles. Well, all but the two leads, Yazawa and Nishikino, as they had been brought in specifically for their star power and were also sitting in the house with most of the crew.
Also, not everyone present was theater staff. There was of course, Ohara, the patron, and her driver, Matsuura. And there were the two from the catering company that had brought lunch earlier, Honoka and Rin, who insisted Ayumu refer to them by their given names when she spoke with them during the meal. She wasn’t quite sure why they were still around as they had finished cleaned up a little while back.
“I didn’t expect to see you here, Yuu-chan.” Ayumu whispered as Dia and Umi prepped the future cast for their auditions. “How did you even get in?”
“I told ‘em I was Ayumu’s girlfriend.” Yuu shrugged. “And they obviously figured out what I am, which probably helped. Although speaking of that…” She glanced around quickly, sticking out her tongue a couple times. “I’m pretty sure everyone here is like us. I don’t remember them advertising that they were only hiring monsters, but… oh sorry, supernatural beings.” She corrected.
Ayumu let her grimace relax. She had never liked the term monster as seemed to carry more negative connotations than other similar terms. And while Yuu was usually careful to avoid using the word, so many of their fellow cryptids used it that Ayumu couldn’t really fault her girlfriend for accidentally using it as well from time to time. Of course, that still didn’t mean she had to like it.
“But I don’t think there’s a single full blood human here.” Yuu continued. “And man, what a mix.” She flicked out her tongue again. “I’m getting a bit of everything. There’s gotta be a werewolf among them. And someone with feathers. At least one undead. I’m getting a bit of sea salt, so there’s probably a mermaid or the like. Sulfur, brimstone, so maybe a demon, or other fire creature I suppose, maybe both. And…” her brow furrowed, and she held her tongue out for longer than usual “that’s odd…”
“What’s odd?” Ayumu pressed.
“I don’t know. There’s something… else… here.” She shook her head. “I’ve never smelled anything like it. Heat. Flame. But not like any I’ve ever known… It’s otherworldly, and yet, not unpleasantly so. Huh…”
“Oh, I think they’re starting.”
“Right.” Yuu turned her attention to the stage where a young woman with long brown hair with some tied in a bright red ribbon was about to begin.
If Ayumu remembered right, the young woman’s name was Osaka Shizuku and had graduated alongside Nishikino Maki from Waseda, a prestigious school known for its arts degrees. For her audition, she had chosen to recite and act out a dramatic monologue in English. Ayumu felt like she had heard the lines before, though not on stage. Perhaps a movie? In any case, Shizuku left little doubt as to her skill and training, leaving Ayumu rightfully impressed.
Next up was… Nakasu Kasumi? Ayumu knew she had seen that face before. The young woman had appeared in a handful of television commercials, usually cute things aimed at a certain female demographic. Ayumu had actually purchased a few items promoted by Kasumi. As such, it came as little surprise that Kasumis audition resembled one of those cute commercials.
The next few auditions were a bit of a blur for Ayumu. It didn’t help that she was far less familiar with their names and faces.
But then, she stepped onto the stage. A short, raven haired young woman with an aura Ayumu could only describe as passionate. Out of the corner of her eye, she noticed Yuu sit up straighter as she seemed to sense something about this girl. Like the previous several others, Ayumu wasn’t familiar with this one, but something about her held her attention.
“Yuki Setsuna, was it?” Umi read from her list.
“Yes.” Setsuna confirmed.
“And what do you have for us today?”
“Well, I read the script and really enjoyed one character, so I would like to recite a few of her lines.”
“You’ve already memorized lines from the script?”
“Yes.”
“The script you were just given earlier today?”
“Yes. It was just so~ good. I couldn’t put it down.” Setsuna seemed to be actively holding back her excitement.
“Impressive.”
In a nearby seat, an orange-haired girl bounced a little, seemingly excited by the admission. Perhaps she was the one who had written the script?
“Oh, I may have also added a few lines.” Setsuna admitted. “I believe they fit the character.”
Umi gave a glance toward the orange-haired girl behind her who nodded enthusiastically.
“Very well.” Umi turned back toward the stage. “Carry on.”
Setsuna closed her eyes and took a deep breath before releasing it slowly. When she opened her eyes again, her entire demeanor had changed from restrained excitement to a fiery passion. Even from several rows up, Ayumu felt she could see flames in the young woman’s eyes.
Suddenly, Setsuna struck a dramatic pose. “At last, I have found you, foul beasts!” She practically shouted, pointing to somewhere else on stage.
Ayumu jumped a little in her seat, having not expected the outburst. She heard Yuu giggle quietly beside her.
“It is I, Artemisia Ullrin! Hunter of Horrors by trade and Collector of Cryptids by hobby.” She held her hand to her chest as the belted the lines proudly. “By order of Lady Lycaonian, I am to exterminate the infestation of werebeats suffered by her lands. You are welcome to resist, though I assure you that you shall lose. However!” Setsuna emphasized her lines with exaggerated gestures. “I offer an alternative! Surrender and be added to my collection.”
As melodramatic as the performance was, Ayumu couldn’t deny that it was quite entertaining. She watched in amusement as Setsuna skipped ahead to what she assumed to be a battle scene where she called out attacks like a cheesy hero show for kids. She knew the production was intended to be a little tongue in cheek, but Setsuna seemed intent on not just chewing, but flat out consuming the scenery, happily.
And then, seemingly all too soon, it was over.
“Bravi! Bravi!” Mari cheered, loudly, as she stood up from her seat. “Bravissimi!”
The orange-haired girl joined in standing as well, clapping and laughing. Then Yuu stood, as well several others.
“Thank you, everyone.” Setsuna bowed before standing back up with a beaming smile.
“<Where in the world have you been hiding,> Secchan?” Mari exclaimed in English
“Se-Secchan?” Setsuna blinked.
“Really, you were perfect!” The script writer added. “I love the new lines! I’ll be sure to add them!”
“It would appear you’ve earned a few fans.” Dia spoke next, fairly coolly and calmly, though Ayumu was certain she detected a touch of amusement in her tone. “That will undoubtedly play in your favor when we make our final casting decisions.”
“Thank you.” Setsuna bowed again before moving off stage to allow the next audition to proceed.
“Alright, next we have…”
Whatever else Umi was saying was lost to Ayumu as hands grabbed her shoulders.
“That was amazing!” Yuu did he best to keep her volume down. “That really got my heart racing! Actors are amazing! Theater is amazing! Ooo… I want to meet Setsuna-chan in person now!”
“-chan?!” Ayumu balked.
“I can’t wait to see the production!” Yuu continued as though she hadn’t heard Ayumu. “How long did you say it would take?”
“Well, it’s a musical, so that apparently adds more time.” Ayumu recalled. “I think I remember either Umi or Dia saying they were slotting for twelve weeks before opening night.”
“Twelve weeks?” Yuu visibly deflated a bit. “That’s like three whole months! I don’t think I can wait that long…”
Ayumu chuckled at her girlfriend’s newfound obsession. She’d seen this dozens of times before as Yuu would latch onto and hyper-focus on some new hobby or interest. “Maybe we can find some old clips of plays performed by the other Sonoda or Kurosawa theaters?”
“That’s a great idea, Ayumu!” Yuu’s eyes sparkled like emeralds. “Let’s do that tonight.”
“Alright.” Ayumu nodded in agreement.
Satisfied, Yuu settled back into her seat to watch the ongoing audition.
For her own part, Ayumu found her thoughts drifting. Artemisia? Ullrin? Lady Lycaonian? Mythology was not her strong suit, but it sounded like that wasn’t the case with the script writer either. It was almost as if she had simply Googled something about werewolves and just went with the first result that came up. Also, wasn’t Artemis already a woman? Did her name really need an -ia at the end to make the character female?
Well, the showrunners seemed fine with the ideas and the script writer and at least one of the actors were excited about them. So, who was Ayumu to judge? It wasn’t as if she herself hadn’t been entertained by Setsuna’s performance.
Setsuna… -chan… Ayumu glanced at her girlfriend. She had seen Yuu fawn over fictional woman before, but this was a first time she remembered her doing so over a living, breathing woman. And for some reason, that bothered her. Was she jealous? Ayumu shook her head to clear it of such thoughts. She was probably overthinking things and being insecure. She and Yuu had been happily dating for several years now. She shouldn’t be worrying about losing her at this point… right?
----------
“Yuu-chan, wait!” Ayumu protested as her girlfriend pulled her through a door clearly marked Employees Only. “We… I mean, you shouldn’t…”
“I just want to meet Setsuna-chan and thank her for the wonderful performance.” Yuu responded, not letting up her pace.
They rounded a corner and…
“Takasaki Yuu-san.” Dia stated solemnly as she stood in the center of the hallway.
“Oh, hi!” Yuu responded cheerfully. “You’re one of the women I met at the front door and decided to let me in. Dia-san, right?”
Dia blinked, obviously not expecting Yuu to skip a level of formality. But Yuu had been like that for the entire time Ayumu had known her. Still, Ayumu winced as she wondered how much trouble they were now in.
“Yes…” Dia confirmed.
“Right. Thank you again for letting me watch the auditions today.” Yuu continued. “They were amazing! My heart was racing pretty much the entire time. Especially with Setsuna-chan’s.”
There she goes again with -chan…
“Yuki-san did indeed give us quite the performance.” Dia agreed. “Anyway, as I was about to say, Takasaki-san, you are not employed here.”
“Nope. Not yet.” Yuu grinned.
“Not yet?” Dia raised an eyebrow.
“This whole experience has been so inspiring that I want to apply to work here.”
Ayumu also raised an eyebrow. That was news to her.
“You wish to become an actor?” Dia inquired.
Yuu shook her head. “No, I don’t really want to be on stage; I’d rather watch from the audience. But I can’t help wanting to support the amazing members of your cast in whatever way I can.”
“I see.”
“I could haul supplies around.” Yuu suggested. “Oh, I’m pretty good with my hands.” She held them out for emphasis. “So maybe I could help assemble sets or props? Ayumu has taught me a thing or two about hair and makeup, so I could definitely help her. Oh, and I worked a while as an editor for my college newspaper, so maybe I could go over the script and help there? And I did some composing for the band and orchestras, and even learned to play a couple instruments, like the piano, so I could help in the pit as well.”
Dia nodded. “I think I am starting to understand. You are essentially a jack of all trades.”
“Master of none.” Yuu confirmed.
“But better than a master of one.” Dia completed.
“Right. I’m no specialist, but I’m pretty good at picking up the basics.”
“Yuu-chan is a fast learner.” Ayumu added.
“I see.” Dia nodded. “Then I would suggest you get a resume in order and send it our way. Uehara-san should have the contact information.”
“Oh, I have that already. I was actually the one who found this place and recommended that Ayumu apply. I probably would have applied as well at that time, but I had a job then.” Yuu shrugged. “But they decided they needed to cut costs, and as I was the most recently hired, I ended up being part of that cost.”
“Well, I admire your enthusiasm and desire to help my cast and crew.” Dia smiled. “I shall look forward to working with you soon. Now, if you will excuse me, there are matters to which I must attend elsewhere.” That said, she stepped past the couple and moved down the hall.
Ayumu released a breath she hadn’t realized she had been holding. So… Dia wasn’t kicking them out after all? She wasn’t in trouble for letting a non-employee into this area?
“C’mon!” Yuu said, grabbing her hand again and shattering her thoughts. “We still gotta find Setsuna-chan. Say, do you know where her dressing room is?”
“I, uhm… know some of the rooms are off to the right.” Ayumu motioned in that direction. “Though I’m not sure if she has one assigned to her yet.”
“Well, let’s go see.”
“Uhm… alright…” Again, Ayumu was pulled down the hall.
The couple turned another corner, moved past the rooms for Yazawa and Nishikino, another without a name plate and… huh…
“She has one.” Yuu said, stopping in front of a room. “They must have just given it to her.” She indicated the paper sign taped over where the a more permanent placard would be placed. “Maybe she already got the part she wanted?”
Ayumu shrugged. She didn’t know enough about the overall process to comment.
“Setsuna-chan!” Yuu called as she knocked. “Are you in there?”
“Yes,” the young actress replied from within “you can come in.”
Yuu opened the door and stepped in.
“Uehara-san?” Setsuna turned away from whatever she was setting up on the vanity. “And… uhm…?”
“Yuu.” The twintailed girl responded. “Takasaki Yuu. I’m Ayumu’s girlfriend and they let me watch the auditions with her.”
“Ah…”
“So, you’re the source.”
“Eh?”
Yuu flicked her tongue. “Of the scent I smelled earlier.”
“Sc-scent?” Pink dusted Setsuna’s cheeks.
“Flame. Fire.” Yuu stepped closer and leaned in toward the young actress. “But not the kind I am used to… Just what are you, Setsuna-chan?”
“Yuu-chan!” Ayumu scolded, moving forward to pull her girlfriend away from Setsuna who was starting to display some defensive body language. “You shouldn’t just ask such things so bluntly.”
“Mm? Why not?” Yuu seemed confused. “I think it’s pretty obvious now that Dia-san and Umi-san intended to create a sort of haven for us here. And if we’re all going to work together, it makes sense to know what we all are.”
“Yeah, but…”
“Anyway, I’m a lamia.” Yuu indicated herself. “I’d show you, but I wore pants today.”
Well, at least she has the decency to not unceremoniously drop trou in front of someone she just met. Ayumu thought to herself. Like she so often does at home…
“But I can do this.”
Eh? Ayumu felt her cheek being pinched.
“There. As you can see, Ayumu is a moon rabbit.”
Eh? Eh?! Ayumu caught her reflection in the mirror near Setsuna. Sure enough, white, fluffy rabbit ears had sprouted on her head.
“Mohhh… Yuu-chan!” Ayumu punched her girlfriend lightly in the arm.
“What?” Yuu giggled at the playful jab. “Ayumu always looks so cute like that. I can’t help wanting to see you like that more.”
“Mmph…” Ayumu puffed her cheeks out to pout, though she couldn’t deny liking the compliment.
“They are indeed quite cute, Uehara-san.” Setsuna agreed with an amused smile.
“Oh, uhm… thank you.” Ayumu replied. “And, Ayumu is fine. Like Yuu-chan said, we’ll be working together a lot, so I don’t mind being a bit less formal.”
Setsuna’s smile grew. “I’d like that. Please feel free to call me Setsuna in return. Oh, and if you don’t mind my asking, by moon rabbit, do you mean…?”
“Well, I wasn’t actually born on the moon, if that’s what you mean.” Ayumu explained. “My ancestors were though.”
Setsuna nodded in understanding.
“But you should try her mochi, though.” Yuu spoke up. “It’s the best. Same with her rice cakes.”
Setsuna seemed to recall something. “I think you’ll find a good friend in Koizumi-san.”
“Oh yeah,” Yuu thought out loud “Ayumu, wasn’t she the one you said they brought a huge container of rice for?”
Ayumu nodded in confirmation. “I was honesty surprised how much she was able to eat, though she wasn’t the only one.”
“I suppose some of us have larger forms to feed.” Yuu shrugged. “Anyway, I gotta know the source of that fiery smell.” She turned her attention back to Setsuna. “You know what we are now, so what kind are you? Why is your fire so different than that of an ifrit, salamander, phoenix, dragon or whatever?”
“Oh, uhm…” Setsuna fidgeted a bit. “I’m a Cthughan.”
Yuu furrowed her brow in thought for a moment before something came to her and she looked up excitedly. “You mean you’re the Elder God, Cthugha?”
Setsuna shook her head. “Great Old One, actually. And I’m only a descendant of him. Cthugha is my great great great… I actually don’t know how many greats, grandfather.”
Oh, kind of like me being a descendant of rabbits who actually lived on the moon way back when. Ayumu thought.
“That’s. So. Cool!” Yuu practically squealed. “No wonder I couldn’t identify it, I’ve never met an Elder God before.”
“Great Old One.” Setsuna corrected again.
“Right, sorry. Anyway, that wasn’t actually the reason I wanted to meet you today.”
“Oh?”
“Yeah, I actually wanted to tell you how amazing you were in your audition and that I really hope you get the part.”
“Thank you. And they did actually already give me the role.” Setsuna said. “That’s why I’ve been setting up my stuff here.”
“I was right.” Yuu tossed over to Ayumu. “Congratulations, Setsuna-chan!” She offered the actress.
“Thank you again.” Setsuna smiled. “I really like the part.”
“It looked like it was a lot of fun to play.”
“I know right?” Ayumu detected some of the excitement Setsuna displayed before her audition.
“I haven’t read the script yet, but…
“It’s so~ good!” Setsuna seemed less able, or perhaps less willing to suppress her excitement. “I was able to talk with Chika-san, who wrote the script, and she was able to tell me a ton of things about what she had planned for possible modifications, depending on who got what parts and, oh my gosh, it all sounds amazing, and I think they already know who to cast for the main villain and while I didn’t expect that choice, Chika-san’s explanation was awesome as she revealed her plans to me and what she has planned for Yazawa-san and Nishikino-san’s characters, oh it sounds like so much fun and…” Setsuna suddenly recoiled and stepped back. “I’m sorry, I didn’t mean to go off like that…”
Yuu laughed. “It’s fine, it’s fine.” She dismissed. “Your excitement makes me want to see if I can track down this Chika-san and get a copy for myself.”
“You can have one of mine!” Setsuna pounced at offering.
“One of…?” Yuu asked, picking up on the word choice.
“Oh, uhm… I may have made a couple copies for myself to write ideas on after Chika-san said she would like to see what I think.” Setsuna admitted as she shuffled through a stack of papers. She started to hold out a set before pulling them back. “Wait, you don’t work here though.”
“Not yet.” Yuu admitted. “But your audition, and many of the others, inspired me to apply here so I could support the amazing actors here however I could.”
“Ah.” Setsuna nodded, holding out the papers, only to pull them back yet again. “You’re not a spy from that other theater down the street, are you?”
Yuu chuckled. “If that was the case, I’d just get my info from Ayumu.”
“Right, that makes sense.” Finally the actress gave the script to Yuu.
“I already offered to Dia-san that I could help with editing.” Yuu skimmed it excitedly. “I wonder if Chika-san would mind if I slipped in a few ideas of my own.”
“She seems pretty willing to accept ideas from others around the theater.” Setsuna said. “Both Osaka-san and Nakasu-san have offered some of their thoughts already.”
Yuu opened her mouth, but whatever she was about to say next was interrupted by her stomach growling. She giggled. “I guess it is getting a little late.”
“Let’s head home then.” Ayumu spoke up. “I’ll make dinner for us. It was nice meeting you, Setsuna-san.”
“I don’t think I can make it all the way home.” Yuu said. “Why don’t we stop at that sandwich shop along the way.”
“Alright.” Ayumu agreed.
“Wanna come with us, Setsuna-chan?”
“Eh? Me?” Setsuna seemed caught off guard by the invite.
“Yeah, that way we can talk about the script and stuff.”
“Oh, uhm, thank you, but I wouldn’t want to impose. Besides there’s still a couple things I want to do here before I head out.”
“Alright. Maybe some other time then.” With that, Yuu took Ayumu’s hand and headed for the door. “See you later, Setsuna-chan!” She called as she exited.
At first Ayumu felt relief that Setsuna had declined, but as she and Yuu walked down the hall, a sense of disappointment set it. She actually did want to talk about the upcoming play. Perhaps next time…
----------
“Ne, Yuu-chan.” Ayumu said as the couple walked home.
“Mm?”
“Would you… uhm… Would you support me if I decided to become an actress?” The way you say you want to support Setsuna-san and the others?
“Of course!” Yuu gave her a toothy grin. “I think Ayumu would be an amazing actor.”
“Really?”
Yuu chuckled. “Well yeah, the Ayumu I know and love may be shy sometimes and hesitant to try new things. But when she decides to do something, she’s the hardest worker I know. She always gives it her best. That’s one of my favorite aspects of Ayumu.”
Ayumu blushed at Yuu’s affirmations.
“So, what prompted this all of a sudden?” Yuu looked at Ayumu with sudden curiosity. “Did the auditions inspire you as well?”
“A little…” Ayumu admitted. Did she need to include her desire for Yuu to look at her the way she looked at Setsuna?
Yuu smiled. “Well, maybe tonight we should look into finding some acting classes for you to take.”
“Classes?”
“Well, I don’t know anything about acting, so I’d be no help to you there.” Yuu explained. “Though I’d be happy to help you rehearse lines or whatever. And you’ll want some knowledge before you start auditioning for roles, right? Surely there has to be some evening or night course you can take somewhere.”
“Alright.”
Yuu’s expression became whimsical. “Mm… I can imagine it now. Uehara Ayumu stars in… something something big show, the marquee proudly proclaims with flashing lights. Ayumu on stage bowing before a standing ovation. Flowers are tossed on stage by devoted fans.”
“Y-Yuu-chan…” Ayumu murmured a quiet protest.
“What? I can’t imagine my amazing girlfriend being adored by all?”
“Well… I don’t really need to be the star, do I?”
Yuu shrugged. “Even if you only want supporting roles, I’ll still happily come watch your performances.”
Ayumu smiled. She loved this side of Yuu, her unwavering and unconditional support, always willing to adapt to anything Ayumu wanted to do. It was a constant source of confidence from which she drew to take on those new things, when she did.
Maybe she was overthinking the thing with Setsuna. Yuu was just being Yuu, getting excited over a new obsession, and Setsuna’s performance just happened to be the gateway into that obsession. As for Setsuna herself, she seemed equally excited about acting as Yuu, if not more so. And as her audition proved, she had talent. Perhaps Ayumu could learn a thing or two from her through observation, or just talking with her.
“Alright.” She set her mind on her decision. “Let’s look into classes when we get home.”

this is a (super late) update to this fic rec post! i was planning to just keep editing and updating that post, but it’s been so old it no longer appears on tumblr search system and all, so here we are. be ready for some old school zosans in the mix
all complete
absolute favorites will be noted with a ♡
list will be updated as i find more
story count: 30 fics
last update: jan 5th 2020
CANON-VERSE
Goings On by clarify  ♡
Zoro and Sanji understand each other, and sometimes have a very similar sense of humor. Even though they're worlds ahead of most, sometimes they can't help but to act their age.
easily one of my favorites. zoro and sanji are completely in character, being themselves and comfortable in each other’s spaces. for anyone who thinks zoro and sanji can’t get along in canon, this fic can easily prove them wrong.
Part Timer by 8ball ♡♡
Sanji really, really doesn't want to give Zoro a job at his restaurant. Zoro doesn't really even want to work there in the first place, but, well, there’s this thing with Sanji, and this thing with feelings and the whole thing is pretty damn stupid all together.
Zeff just wants grandkids. He’s too old for this bullshit anyways.
a wonderful, heart-wrenching, roller coaster ride of a post-series fic. this fic is not just a mere fic — it’s a zosan magnum opus with guest appearances by so many other characters, lots of crew hijinks and a must-read for everyone who craves for a happy ending for these good boys.
Say It Again by 8ball
Zoro tells Sanji how he feels. And then again. And again.
since we’re talking about 8ball i just want you to know i’d rec everything they’ve ever written, but special mention to say it again — a classic miscommunication trope fic done well where the miscommunication stems from fundamental misunderstanding of each other’s principles and views instead of just some plot-convenient coincidences. and soft zoro. god, he is soft.
The Wedding Night by cuethe-pulse (lj)
Zoro had never expected any of this.
major character death warning. don’t let the first few scenes fool you. note the warning; the last few lines were like a punch in the gut for me, except, you know, the good kind of punch. also, a quick rec of a drabble by the same author to soothe the pain after this one.
Roronoa Zoro: World’s Greatest Bug Killer by insaneidiot ♡
Sometimes, Zoro's life really sucks. He should've known better than to make fun of Sanji's bug phobia, though...
zoro’s internal monologue is hilarious  — until today, this author is still my go-to expert on zoro’s voice, especially his more sarcastic side.
Quitting’s Easy by insaneidiot
Sanji decides to quit smoking. This is not quite so easy as he thinks it will be. Also, his crewmates (excluding Robin and Nami, of course!) are assholes.
fun, fun strawhat hijinks and oblivious sanji. the crew dynamics and especially sanji’s voice are pitch perfect. there’s a hint of luffy/nami that you can easily scroll past if it’s not your thing.
I can’t stop thinking that i can’t stop thinking by hieiandshino ♡
In which Brook changes tactics and Zoro is not amused. Everyone else is, though.
holy shit is this fic hilarious. i love comedy fics that manage to slip in thoughtful observations and character study in between the hijinks, and this fic pulls that off with flying colors.
The Walls See All by threesipsmore
Reiju hides a snail cam in her brother's room.
fun short fic from reiju’s pov. there’s never enough zosan set in whole cake island arc and this fic delivers.
Stormbird by Judin ♡
The Straw Hats' first landing in the New World is on Arashi Island, where it looks like they'll be spending a fun week attending the local festival and making new friends. Until they spot a strange pirate ship in the harbour, and Sanji starts behaving oddly. The Straw Hats become entangled with the mysterious Gently Pirates, a crew that harbour many secrets, and whose captain is a man out of Sanji's past who has the power to tear the Straw Hat crew apart.
it cannot be overstated how wonderful this fic is, and how it could’ve fit into the canon just nicely, like a better-written one piece movie, except with zosan. not only are sanji and zoro in character, every strawhat gets a spotlight and has pitch-perfect voices. brook is especially lovely in this fic.
Unintended Consequence by itsmylifekay
A group of marines charge, Zoro slices through them, and in that instant Sanji feels his own eyes grow wide. Because there, on the arm now outstretched towards him, steel glinting in hand, is the stupid bracelet he’d given Zoro. The bastard is actually wearing it.
there’s a reason this is the most kudo-ed zosan fic on ao3 right now — it’s so soft without being ooc, and there’s a quiet undercurrent of affection laid throughout the fic that will warm you up from the insides.
Somewhere Between Sorrow and Bliss by srididdledeedee
Sanji has never cared for winter.
He can see himself, is the thing. There are bits and pieces that poke through, but it’s not all him. It’s like staring in a fractured mirror. He knows, intellectually, that the person staring back at him is himself, but his face is splintered and his shape is distorted and his body is wrong.
a fantastic character study on trans!sanji and how he comes to terms with his identity with the help of his crewmates. supportive strawhats are always a lovely addition to a zosan fic
Give In To Love by libbylune
Zoro knows better than to think about it too much, but between the rowdy festivals and ancient unexplained temples on this island, it's hard to forget about wanting Sanji.
i love how this fic puts as much focus on the boys after the confession as it does before the confession. a good case fic with its own unique island adventure and i’m always a sucker for soft!zoro
Laundry by libbylune
Dealing with Sanji makes Zoro develop a lot of opinions about clothes.
there’s absolutely nothing hotter than bi!sanji who’s completely comfortable with his gender identity and sexuality. also gay disaster zoro fumbling his words whenever sanji is around is 1) accurate 2) hilarious.
Language of Swords by HaveMyWeedCookies ♡
It took them for a while but finally, Zoro asked if Sanji wanted to hold his sword.
i love fics that explore zoro’s relationship with his craft and his swords, and adding zosan into the mix is something i didn’t know i needed. an interesting outsiders pov zosan in the pov of zoro’s swords.
Ghost of a Chance by sabershadowkat
“I know, for sure, that I didn’t expect to miss everyone so much, including you.” Sanji cut a glance at Zoro and rephrased correctly, “Especially you.”
this fic handles tropes that are usually associated with character death fics, but manages to end it with a happy ending. zoro’s devotion here is heart-wrenching.
Idiot Romance by sabershadowkat
"This has to be a joke," Sanji muttered, poking at the colored petals. Zoro couldn't have just given him flowers.
a classic  — this is literally the first zosan fic i’ve ever read — and a lovely one at that. sanji is oblivious and zoro attempts romance, not that zoro ever needed to.
festival night by thisislegit
“ANOTHER FEAT BY THE WORLD’S STRONGEST MAN, JORIRI.” The woman turned to Mr. Mohawk and with faux sympathy said, “Oh! Sorry, sir. Maybe next time. We can’t always beat the best, but we can do our best and that’s what matters. Do we have any other takers? ANY OTHER TAKERS READY FOR THE STRONG MAN CHALLENGE? HOW ABOUT YOU SIR? MADAM? YOU OVER THERE? ARE YOU INTERESTED?”
“What kind of shit name is Joriri,” said Zoro and Sanji in unison.
i’m an absolute sucker for fics that have zoro and sanji simply hanging out and enjoying each other’s company, comfortable in a way they couldn’t with their other crewmates, and this fic exemplifies that. just them being little shits and having fun with one another.
No Victory in Hesitation & the Past Has Its Lessons by EudaimonErisornae & vageege
Zoro has a lot of things he wants to say to Sanji, but he just needs one more day. || Zoro tries to fix a mistake he made in the past.
major character death warning. i died a little bit inside after reading this tbh. there are some devil fruits-explained time travel hijinks, but mostly it’s this looming, grim inevitability of death that’s written so pervasively throughout the fic that really got me.
Imperatives by dollcewrites
Zoro is confident in saying that Sanji is a man who doesn’t do what he’s told. Which is why, when a command accidentally slips from Zoro’s lips during foreplay, he is expecting to hear the cook’s scoff as he continues to do what he pleases.
i don’t tend to do pwp, but this isn’t just one — it’s a completely in-character piece about their relationship and dynamics.
when you say by bluewalk ♡
It's a long time in coming. Usopp can promise, but.
this fic is as much sanuso as it is zosan, and usopp here is — still very much usopp, but also a very beautiful take on his character as someone who spent a lot of time behind sanji’s back, and realizes that when he watches sanji’s back, he gets to see zoro’s, too.
a complete guide to falling in love by ThousandSunny
Sanji was trained in the Bridal Arts; this does not go unnoticed by the rest of his crew.
while the main ship is still zosan, the fic also focuses a lot on zoro and sanji’s relationship with the rest of the crew, and it’s one of those fics that really makes you realize how much of a family the strawhats is. a lovely read all around.
destructivity is a poison that run through our veins by wasteofmind
Zoro thinks that, someday, they are going to kill each other.
a dysfunctional take of their relationship. it’s fascinating in the same way a car crash is fascinating  — there’s an undercurrent of something violent, something visceral. this is one of the fics that inspired me to write migratory animals.
ALTERNATE UNIVERSE
Ocean’s Child by 8ball  ♡
Here's the truth: Zoro couldn't swim. He fell in the water and sank like a stone because there had never been anyone to teach him how to move his arms. He forgot that if he screamed for help the water would get in his mouth, and he even opening his eyes hurt.
Here’s the other truth, the one that stays a secret: a mermaid saved him.
a fascinating retelling of the one piece canon with mermaid!sanji. it feels a lot like a love letter to the seas, and it’s mesmerizing how sanji’s mermaid backstory is seamlessly weaved into the one piece canon.
with you by Cirro
How to find your life partner in three easy steps: 1. Punch them in the face 2. Insult their cognitive abilities 3. Embarrass them so much they agree to marry you
a wholesome two-part modern au series. my personal favorite is the second part, where sanji brings zoro home to meet zeff — complete with the two of them teasing sanji in their own ways.
The Proper Reaction (or What To Do When Your Son Brings His Boyfriend Home by three_days_late
Holidays at the Baratie were always hectic, but it's nothing Zeff can't handle. Sanji's new boyfriend, on the other hand...
on the topic of meet-the-family: the only thing more fun than zoro meeting zeff is zoro meeting zeff and the entirety of baratie staff. also includes one of my favorite line about bi!sanji: “sanji loves nice girls and bad boys”.
Exclusive by cuethe-pulse
Zoro loves Sanji, Sanji loves Zoro. Zoro wants to be exclusive, so Sanji should, too. Right?
this is a circus/bakery au. yes, you read that right, and yes, it works. i went into this fic with a lot of doubts and came out very satisfied with how fleshed out everyone in this au is, and i’m forever in awe with how the author can set up an entirely separate, vivid universe with so few words.
Delivery by styx_in_the_mud
Sanji is stuck delivering pizzas when Patty is out of commission for a while. Zoro likes to order pizza after training. Both of them are sort of idiots, but Zoro can be smooth as fuck if he puts his mind to it.
a fun, in-character au with good ol’ banter and cute get-together.
The End of It All by xpiester333xx
Humans have been forced underground due to the effects of a chemical weapon that has made surface life impossible. Sanji lives in one of these underground colonies and though he dreams of bigger things his life has been mundane; spent following strict rules and obeying higher commands. Or it was, until a stranger shows up and changes everything.
the author labelled it as sci-fi au, but I personally think it’s more dystopian-like? either way, while this fic is on the long side, it manages to keep everyone in character until the very end, which is something that can’t be said for a lot of fics.
well, there we go! feel free to drop me an ask if you want to rec me fics or ask for a more specific/themed rec list; i’ll also update this post regularly !!
i also have an ao3 donutsandcoffee if you want to see my take on these dorks o/

I have the deepest respect for people who write good fanfiction. Now mind you, I also celebrate all those people who still put themselves out there and write a fanfic, even if it necessarily isn’t as good as someone else’s, because I sure as hell couldn’t do that.
As a writer, I get to enjoy the luxury of creating whole new people and worlds to interact with and expand upon for both my line and others’ enjoyment. There’s a certain kind of freedom you have, with that kind of writing, because there are only your own boundaries and standards that you must uphold. Fanfic writers; however, must adhere to canon in some way shape or form — be it through the plot, setting, or the characters themselves. Some writers tweak the characters’ personalities, or just completely change everything up altogether to provide readers with a new perspective. Some of my favorite fanfictions are written in a way that it explores a character — their motivations, their behavior — so much deeper than what is canonically seen, and yet it still feels like you are connecting with this real and accurate character, even if their personality or whatnot is not quite what you were used to seeing in the show or book or movie. Fanfiction writers are such badasses because they need to be able to capture this character’s original nature be it how they interact with those around them, their inner monologues, the true motivations behind their actions, or even something as simple as their usual speech patterns. They need to write this character in a manner that they accurately reflect how they are portrayed in canon, and then the writer can take some liberties with changing aspects of their actions or personality to fit into an entirely new plot. I cannot imagine how much work and research some fanfic writers have put into making sure the setting for their story is correct, that the various tools and creatures are something likely to be found in the story if only those things were expanded upon in canon.
The time and dedication they put forth to these works of art — because ultimately, that’s what good writing is — only to be ridiculed for their passion because people are too ignorant to acknowledge that fanfiction isn’t juvenile or silly, makes me so incredibly angry.
Don’t like the content of a fanfiction?
Don’t read it then, my dude. (Tags exist for a reason)
Wasn’t as good as you’d hoped it would be?
Oh well, just keep browsing.
Bad grammar?
I understand the frustration, but maybe English or whatever other language you’re reading in isn’t their first language. Just cut ‘em some slack.
Scathing comments are never necessary, because these writers put a lot of time and effort into creating these stories for people all over the world to read an enjoy — for FREE might I add —so they don’t deserve anyone’s shit, especially when they’ve managed to accurately write a literal fictional character who has already been created and perfectly fit them into a whole new and engaging plot. So yeah, mad respect and love to all you awesome fanfic writers out there. Keep writing and stay strong because you have an amazing gift no matter what some assholes might say.
Thank you for humoring my long post, and I’d like to leave you all with a couple shout outs to some good fanfictions and their writers that I’ve read recently and I believe deserve some love and attention. (Also I’m a bit biased but I can live with that)

These are all the ones I can think of off the top of my head. I encourage you to give them all a try, but if they’re not your cup of tea that is totally understandable and I hope you find something to read that you genuinely enjoy during these stressful, quarantine-and-virus-filled times.
Sending lots of love and strength to everybody, because I’m sure we’re all struggling through some shit right now, be it school or family related. Don’t let 2020 get you down, and if you wanna chat or ask a question or something, feel free to message me 💙 (also here’s a picture of my grandma’s adorable dog Bailey to cheer you up)

because I think of it altogether too much, some dialogue on the differences in the role of the Muse in Les contes d’Hoffmann, in the play versus in the opera. Enjoy my nerdy, disorganized, former-literature-major ramblings as I spend altogether too much time picking apart the minutia of this issue (but hey, it’s in my URL, so).
In the original play by Michael Carré and Jules Barbier (the same people who wrote the libretto for the opera), the Muse doesn’t double as Niklausse. We get two separate characters–the Muse and Hoffmann’s sidekick, Friédrick.
The play opens with a monologue from the Muse, similar to the one in the opera (some lines are taken verbatim). The monologue in the play, though, isn’t about the Muse being mad at Stella and wanting to win Hoffman’s love. It is in a lot of ways a love letter to the real Hoffmann’s writing, of which Carré was a huge fan (obviously, he wrote a whole play about them). The works of E.T. A. Hoffmann were (and to an extent, still are) hailed as being unique, strange, and otherworldy compared to most of what was seen at the time. The Muse here talks about her stories as if they’re her own, and she happens upon Hoffmann in the tavern (read: when he gets drunk, he gets inspired to write weird stuff). She’s here, then, to introduce this story–the play that we’re watching/reading–as one of her own. She does reappear at the end and makes a statement similar to that made at the conclusion of the opera, that the poet had to suffer to be truly great and now that he’s given up on love she has him to herself–but it’s not that she specifically tried to make this happen, she’s just pleased that it did.
After the Muse’s opening monologue, she tells the audience that the people are coming and she’s going to hide, because they scare her. She puts on a suit and hat similar to that warn by the students that will soon be populating the tavern, so she can blend in with them and not be noticed. I’m guessing this is where the inspiration for the Muse also being Niklausse eventually (partially) comes from.
But we don’t have Niklausse in the play; we get Friédrick. Friédrick is, in my perception, ridiculously adorable. He spends a good portion of the play serving sass. There’s a ton of banter between him and Hoffmann, and some with Friédrick and the side characters as well as they collectively role their eyes at Hoffmann. So, much similarity to Niklausse. A few differences, though: the guys in the tavern love making fun of him, because he’s younger, and Hoffmann is even a little bit meaner to him than their operatic counterparts, and Friédrick is just kind of resigned to it, though he does make fun of Hoffmann at times. Mostly he feels sorry for him and feels the need to take care of him, as he can’t seem to take care of himself.
Friédrick is referred to as Hoffmann’ “shadow,” in that he follows him around everywhere making sure he doesn’t get himself arrested or shanked. He is also referred to by Hoffmann as “the voice of reason” through all his adventures, though of course Friédrick doesn’t remember any of them, since they didn’t actually happen. But he is constantly dragging Hoffmann out of trouble in these stories, which is why Dappertutto tries to off him in the Giulietta act. Dappertutto is annoyed that Friédrick first rescues Hoffmann from Olympia when she goes crazy (which is a big part of the play, and written into the libretto, but rarely ever portrayed on stage for the opera), then saves him from Crespel when Crespel tries to get Hoffmann for (as he perceives) killing Antonia (another bit that’s in the libretto but rarely portrayed onstage) and, finally, is trying to literally drag him away from Giulietta. As with Niklausse, Hoffmann severely under-appreciates Friédrick and all that his friend does for him. But when Dappertutto tries to give him a “sleeping potion” that he says will just make him pass out long enough for Hoffmann to get it on with Giulietta, Hoffmann kind of gets a reality check when he’s like “Wait, okay, but what if he drinks it and then he dies?” Dappertutto insists that no such thing is even remotely possible. I do wonder where Hoffmann’s sudden suspicion and consideration comes from. Like, is he already suspicious of Dappertutto, or is he just concerned because Friédrick is so small a single dose of Nyquil could end him? (Being a lightweight myself, I do wonder.) But we never find out either way, because Giulietta waltzes onstage and downs the poison first and of course Friédrick arrives just in time to save Hoffmann yet again. I just gotta wonder: given Friédrick is not the Muse in this version, why is it that he’s the one who drags Hoffmann out of trouble over and over again in a series of stories that didn’t actually happen?  As constantly annoyed as he seems at Friédrick, he’s the one making the choice to have him play that role. And Friédrick is pretty cool with it. I guess they were roommates.
The Muse’s role, then, comes with a different vibe. She doesn’t have any influence over Hoffmann’s love life or seem quite as imminently concerned about it. She’s not following him around in the same way; she kind of just has to wait for him to come around. She’s less assertive and pretty resigned to having to deal with the constant BS but at the same time seems less bothered by it. She’s not totally dependent on him or solely invested in him; she just likes him a lot and enjoys writing stories with him. The operatic Muse is much more definitively attached to Hoffmann and sees his love life as a direct opposition to them. The stakes are higher for them than for the Muse in the play.
The whole Muse/Niklausse dynamic on the opera fascinates me to no end. I can’t even quite put into words the thoughts I have about it. Lately when I think about the question “If you could go back in time and talk to anyone in history who would it be?” I just want to go and talk to Barbier and Carré and ask how they came to the decision to make Niklauuse and the Muse the same character because–is there really anything in literature that’s quite the same as that? We get “a madwoman, come down from the heavens, to fight with a frivolous woman over the love of a fool” (a line from the libretto) who transforms themself into their poet’s best friend, and deals with his BS which is (as I rambled on a bit in an earlier post) borderline emotional abuse in some cases and even in its mildest forms raises the question “Why, sweetie, why do you put up with this.” Well, they can’t not, can they? What’s a Muse supposed to do? They’ve got their poet and have no other purpose in life that to serve as their inspiration. What would they do if Hoffmann did actually choose Stella over them? It’s basically out of the question.
So looking then at the Muse/Friédrick dynamic was an interesting transition. I can start to see some of the pieces but in some ways it also raises more questions. Was Niklausse ever an actual person, like Friédrick? Is the Muse donning the disguise for just that one night, to be witness to the storytelling, as the Muse in the play does? Does the operatic Muse just figure that Hoffmann will be drunk enough to not notice the difference when the real Niklausse comes back later? Or was Niklausse the Muse all along, and the Muse has for years (or however long) personified themself as another student to try and win Hoffmann on his level? Further, is it Hoffmann who comes up with all the little things that Niklausse does that hints to us what his status actually is, showing that Hoffmann is subconsciously aware of the connection all along? Or is it the Muse infiltrating the storytelling as it occurs to insert themself further, trying to get Hoffmann to really see them during the course of the telling?
On one hand I go crazy over the fact that these questions are never answered, and I wonder why the librettists went from the relatively straightforward Muse/Friédrick dynamic to the super meta, almost incomprehensible Muse/Niklausse dynamic. On the other hand, I appreciate the weird genius behind this that makes me think unreasonably hard about the creative process and art in general and also the relationships we have with people in our lives who we depend on in ways such as this. Also, I appreciate how the ambiguity allows different productions of the opera to have so many interpretations of the role (although there are definitely some interpretations that can go to hell as far as I’m concerned).
Also I think a lot about the names. I think Friédrick is just a cute name and I think it suits the original character. And the transition to Niklausse makes sense: a new interpretation of the character warrants a new name–plus Niklausse comes from “Nicholas” which means “victorious people” which makes sense, you know? Niklausse triumphs in the end, so why not have a powerful name like that? If I were a Muse taking on a human form on earth, I’d want something with that kind of power, too.

Little Women (2019)
A first for the blog: a guest post! The following is a review of Greta Gerwig’s Little Women (2019) by Carly Henderson.
---
When creating a film version of a classic novel, one often wants to justify its existence by approaching the story with a new lens that appeals to its contemporary audience and differentiates it from previous film adaptations. The temptation with this approach, however, is to take a sub-theme and make it the overarching theme, or to misinterpret a theme altogether. The resulting film, then, is either off the mark or entirely antithetical to the source material. This is often what happens in modern adaptations of classic stories (Ang Lee’s Sense and Sensibility, Joe Wright’s Pride and Prejudice and Anna Karenina, Julian Jarrold’s Brideshead Revisited, and Netflix’s Anne with an E, to name a few), and is also the case for Greta Gerwig’s Little Women.
My opinion will be unpopular, as Gerwig’s adaption of Little Women has been widely received with praise for its creativity, innovation, liveliness, direction, and attention to the novel and its fresh resonance with a modern audience. And it’s true: it’s lovely to watch, overall well-acted, has an excellent score, and, I would argue, is the most bold and creative take on the classic story by Louisa May Alcott yet. Many commenters at the film’s release said that every generation deserves its own Little Women, and this version of Little Women is one that only a modern feminism could create and deserve (the film opens and closes with a salary negotiation between Jo and her publisher, the first scene ending with her acceptance of an unjust wage from her publisher, and the last ending with her fair negotiation, making her an equal player with the man). Even so, what makes it distinctive also makes it a denial of itself. Its modern lens overlooks and destroys the heart of the story, and its bold, artistic rendering ends up being a beautiful but empty shell, lovely to behold, but easily cracked and hollowed of its substance. And this is what we get with Gerwig’s Little Women: it’s a coming of age story that focuses on women’s empowerment, equal wages, opportunity, and creative genius at the expense of the growth and maturity of its characters. Alcott’s Little Women is certainly empowerment and creativity, but it is much more than this—it is at its core a story about growth, virtue, and a certain open receptivity before life that allows one to truly be creative and fruitful.
Though I may have criticism of the film overall, the acting in it is a masterclass: Saiorse Ronan is a force to be reckoned with; Florence Pugh makes the ever controversial Amy loveable (perhaps even more lovable than Jo, which is quite the feat), and Timothee Chalamet is a good Laurie, perhaps truer to the novel’s Laurie than Christian Bale’s portrayal in the 1994 adaptation (though his Laurie for me remains superior to all other Lauries). The film is not linear. It starts in “present” adult life, as Jo is in New York and Amy in France, and shifts back to childhood in flashbacks. This has a dizzying effect and can be difficult to follow, even for those familiar with the story. The advantage of this is twofold: on the one hand, the film seeks to take the adult versions of these characters seriously, where other film adaptations tend to give more time to their childhood; on the other hand, it bends the audience to favor a Laurie/Amy pairing from the beginning. This is a victory for sure, overcoming the long-held resentment about Amy, as many continue to think that Laurie should have ended up with Jo. And there is no doubt that Gerwig is technically excellent: the cinematography is beautiful, the music is beautiful, the costuming is beautiful.
But the film gets a great deal wrong about the novel, which should matter if one thinks that a film adaptation should try and capture the animating force of its original material, even if it is impossible to illustrate every aspect. I will limit myself to three points.
First, the film gets Beth all wrong. In the novel, Beth is the heart of the story. She is warm, sweet, and gentle, the one who has a special bond with Jo and the only one who can temper and correct her. Gerwig’s Beth is an odd recluse—apparently also a concert pianist—who is abnormally childlike and random, and without the warmth that is one of the defining traits of Beth’s character. She is often called “sweet one” by her sisters, but little is done in the film to communicate her sweetness. She whines and complains when no one will join her to visit the Hummels; she speaks like a 4 year old before the horses. And, above all, the warmth between her and Jo is not felt. Jo needs Beth to be herself to temper her fire and refine it to something more true, strong, and gentle. It feels as if Gerwig must reconstruct Beth because Beth’s quiet, gentle, and demure personality is not consistent with the idea of femininity as creative self-determination that Gerwig favors. Beth can’t be herself in this film because for Gerwig Jo needs no character arc: she has nothing to learn other than to be more forceful and direct. In fact, Jo seems to be the best of womanhood, forging her creative path and destiny with no need of anyone—not her father, not Prof. Bhaer, and not even Beth, which is in striking contrast to the book.
Aunt March’s character is similarly sacrificed to Gerwig’s particular ideal of femininity. Interestingly enough, Aunt March in this film becomes the aspirational model. In contrast to the book, in Gerwig’s film, Aunt March is the sister of Mr. March. This means she is not only unmarried and rich; she also has never been married, which for Gerwig means she has freedom and means. Let’s side step the question of how an unmarried sister inherits and keeps the family wealth, and note that the real problem here is that Gerwig’s Aunt March represents the only path to freedom for the March girls: money. Are we really prepared to declare that freedom simply is access to capital? That none of the girls’ artistic endeavors mean anything unless they indeed capitalize on them? Here it seems to me particularly clear that Gerwig unknowingly submits Alcott’s work to the architecture of late-stage capitalism.
Additionally, Streep’s Aunt March is a one-dimensional character, surprisingly enough for Streep. In the novel (and in the 2017 BBC adaptation by Helen Thomas), Aunt March is a tragic figure: a widow whose only child died in her youth, and one who says stupid things, but then later realizes it and has the humility to apologize. She therefore is a character of depth—that is, in the novel, she too grows and matures, whereas Streep’s Aunt March has no arc. Streep’s Aunt March is the woman to be: nothing to learn and dependent on no one.
These first two misinterpretations are ultimately the consequence of Gerwig’s misunderstanding of the novel, or perhaps better, her imposing her own (capitalist?) framework on Alcott’s work. In Gerwig’s Little Women, feminine agency is pure self-determination, self-construction, choice, and ambition (which is agency simply in a liberal, capitalist society). This is why Jo and Amy stand out in this film, and Meg and Beth only awkwardly fit in until they ultimately fade away (figuratively and literally, respectively). Indeed, the film’s overarching framework of women as creative, ambitious, self-directing and -constructing, cannot explain the beauty, dignity, meaning, and fruitfulness of both Meg and Beth’s lives apart from choice, precisely because their lives are very hidden, normal, and for all intents and purposes, without fiery ambition. Indeed, choice is the only way to understand Meg’s character in this framework (and which Emma Watson attested to in various interviews): Meg has chosen to be a wife, and this choice gives her life’s path purpose, meaning, and reconciles it with Gerwig’s feminism. Being a wife and mother in and of itself is not what gives her life dignity and purpose—rather it is her choice to do so that does. This problem also stands out in dramatic effect in Amy’s monologue (penned for this film) of marriage as an economic institution that depersonalizes women, as well as Jo’s similar understanding of marriage. Granted, marriage is an economic institution and this aspect of it was particularly felt in this time—but it is not solely an economic institution. It is a good in and of itself, formative for the person, and, above all, the form of love itself. In promoting the almighty reign of choice, the reality of love is undermined, and, ultimately, the true dynamism and variety of femininity is undermined.
But if domestic life is worthy of art and importance, as the characters reflect on at the end of the film, it isn’t because it is something merely chosen by women. We can make poor choices after all. It is rather because there is something inherently important and meaningful about domestic life itself. But if Gerwig were to admit this, it would undermine her framework of feminine agency, freedom, and choice, equality, and thereby, the whole theme of her film. We see this in the meta ending, which, despite the popular interpretation of the novel, is not ambiguous: in Gerwig’s retelling, Jo does not marry Bhaer. Why? Because she is told that she loves him; Gerwig’s Jo would never let anyone tell her how she feels and then stake her life on that (it is interesting to note that, in the book, Jo comes to realize, on her own, that she loves Bhaer, and her family gives her the space to discover this).
And while we are on the subject, I will add one final thing that the film gets wrong: Professor Bhaer. Sure, Louisa May Alcott may have written this character with tongue in cheek to stick it to her publisher for marrying Jo off at the end of the story—i.e., instead of a young, handsome man, Jo falls for an older immigrant, who is bear-like, awkward, yet sweetly endearing—but he is still a good and important character for Jo’s arc as both a woman and a writer. In casting (the strikingly beautiful, might I say) Louis Garrell as Professor Bhaer, Gerwig plays into the cliché ending that Alcott intentionally avoided. Gerwig’s point is clear, but made without the nuance and depth that Alcott gave both the character and the ending.
Whatever the case of Alcott’s original intention, the fact is, Jo becomes a true artist when she allows herself to be affected by others: i.e., when she allows Beth’s nature to temper hers, allows herself to be guided by the wisdom of her father, and allows herself to be moved by the wisdom and love of Professor Bhaer. This isn’t to say that she isn’t creative or independent; it is to say that creativity is always the fruit of relationship. Creativity does not come out of nothing; much like virtue and fruit, it is pruned out of us, sometimes painfully, by another and by life itself. This is what Gerwig’s tale misses, and this is ultimately why it is a deeply dissatisfying adaption.

The Ouran HSHC as Art Students Headcanons
Haruhi Fujioka: visual arts
- Sketching is what she started with as a child because it’s the cheapest; all you need is printer paper and a crappy pencil
- Never walked into a proper art store until her uni classes required it: “You want how much for this sketchbook?!??”
-  Has access to fancy charcoal pencils and whatnot at school now but secretly still feels more comfortable using cheap drugstore mechanical pencils since that’s what she taught herself to draw with
- She thinks the paint and sculpture students are a bit pretentious, but she can appreciate the ceramics because they have a useful purpose (she takes pottery as an elective).
 - Do not even THINK about fucking with this girl’s portfolio, even as a joke. Saying that she guards it with her life is an understatement
- Hidden in a drawer is an unfinished, photorealistic portrait of her mother. Something about it is never quite right; she’s not sure if it’ll ever be truly finished
Tamaki Suoh: literary arts
- Specialises in poetry, particularly romantic poetry, because obviously
- Literally cannot write nonfiction to save his life
- Idolizes the Bard and has multiple, incredibly expensive editions of his complete sonnets. If you pressed him to name a favorite it’d be #19
- Will spend days staring at something simple (a rose, a necklace, etc.) and finally emerge with a poem that is either incredibly poignant and beautiful or laughably bad, no inbetween
- He has a diary full of very personal poems that are only for himself, all written in French
- Despite being a literary arts major, he’s constantly being conscripted by the theatre department to play parts like Romeo and Orsino because he’s just too perfect for it
Kyoya Ootori: instrumental music/performance track
- Here is where I’d put what instrument he specializes in but uh... he literally plays all of them
- I’m not kidding. Hikaru once bet a large sum on money that there was no way Kyoya could play every instrument. He smirkingly threw an ocarina at Kyoya and the bastard just raised an eyebrow then casually played a gorgeous 30 minute rendition of the Song of Storms
- Was playing a Stradivarius at age nine
- Personally, he prefers woodwind instruments the best, followed by strings, piano, and then brass. His conductors have to bribe him to play any sort of brass instrument
- Will disappear for days into a practice room until whatever piece he’s studying is p e r f e c t. If you’re looking for him and he’s not answering his phone, that’s where he is. Will sleep in there so no one steals his room; has passed out in there from dehydration/lack of food and been carted out by medics too many times to count
- Secretly a huge fan of twoset violin
Hikaru Hitachiin: theatre/acting major
- Did you really think this Dramatic Boi(TM) would be anything other than a theatre major
- Despite his IRL demeanor, he’s incredibly serious about his acting. Professors who expect him to be a slacker are consistently surprised by his dedication
- Excels in the classics and absurdist theatre. He can be a little too intense for some of the “slice of life” modern plays
- Could probably pull off a Lear monologue flawlessly at age 12
- Always requests two scripts in any production he’s cast in: one that he can scribble on, rip up, lose pages in, etc. and one that is kept in sheet protectors in perfect condition
- He’ll be cast in a musical here and there. He’s got a decent voice and can carry a tune with a bit of coaching, but he’s got two left feet and therefore is usually put in the back in dance numbers
Kaoru Hitachiin: instrumental music, double major in music performance and music education
- Cello is his main. He was drawn to it as a kid because it’s mellow and calm; a mirror to Hikaru’s spastic tendencies
- I can also seem him liking bassoon for the same reason
- He’s quietly spectacular. You never see him practice, brag about his instrument, etc. but will somehow miraculously show up to every rehearsal with most of their pieces memorized
- Prefers ensemble and orchestral work to solos. Gets a little uncomfortable being the only one solely in the spotlight
- Has STRONG opinions on all the classical composers and one of the few times you’ll see him red-in-the-face shouting is when he’s expressing his extreme hatred for Flight of the Bumblebee
- He’s double majoring in music ed because while he loves performing and wants to work as an instrumentalist for a few years, when he’s done with that scene he’d love nothing more than to have a classroom of his own, teaching six year olds how to hold their bows and leading them through their first rendition of Hot Cross Buns
Mitsukuni Haninozuka: vocal performance
- Ya boy has RANGE. Can go from a gorgeous countertenor to a lovely baritone/high bass.
- His countertenor is his specialty though. Choir conductors across the world will literally fight over the chance to feature him as a soloist or special guest
- Is mostly fluent in just about every language, thanks to the wide variety of languages choir music features. Italian is his favorite, especially the operas
- Always has to stand in the front row of the risers and sometimes on a special-made block so people can see him amongst the other singers. His concert dress always has to be custom made for him as well
- He’s very careful to not abuse his voice, and has eliminated vocal fry in his everyday speech, though it helps that his normal speaking voice is pitched higher naturally
- Though he’d never admit it to his choir peers, he can sing pop and even rap with the best of them, though it’s saved for karaoke nights with his best friends. His favorite things to sing are holiday carols.
Takashi Morinozuka: dance major/ballet track
- He’s been in ballet classes and kendo classes since age four, and refused to give either of them up as he got older
- To him, both ballet and kendo are very similar. They both require strength, grace, and discipline. He attacks the discipline part hard. He’s the epitome of dedicated
- His height and strength makes him a perfect duet partner. All the girls pray they’ll get paired with Mori in partnering class because they know he’ll be a perfect gentleman the whole time and never, ever drop them
- Looks damn good in a pair of tights, and is never self conscious about it
- Keeps a strict athlete friendly diet 90% of the time, but occasionally allows himself a cheat day and will steal a piece of Honey’s cake out of the fridge (because of course they’re dormmates)
- Would definitely be one of the rare guys who practices pointe because A) he finds it a beautiful art form and B) he doesn’t think it’s fair that the women go though the pain of pointe shoes and he not know what it feels like

Chat Blanc Trailer Theory
This spawned as a combination of 1) me trying to put the Chat Blanc trailer clips in order in some way that could fit in a 20-minute episode, 2) a crack theory that got way too out of hand and ended with me writing an entire episode, and 3) my desperate need to see actual character development and communication happen at some point in Miraculous. So take this episode outline that’s technically crack but probably still way more developed than whatever Chat Blanc’s actually going to be. (Under the cut because this got ridiculously long)   Featuring my inability to write angst without fluff and my absolute love of Alix
The episode starts out at the very end of an akuma battle. Sabrina’s been akumatized for reasons unrelated to the plot, Ladybug devilizes the butterfly, they say “pound it,” Chat says something like “see, that was an easy battle, I didn’t even need to use my cataclysm.” And Ladybug’s like “I still think you’re being too risky, you can’t just run into situations like that-“ but they’re cut off because they’re right next to the Agreste mansion now and they see the devilized akuma fly through the wall and inside, and Chat’s like “oh no,” and this is his house so he’s naturally even more curious and he just runs in through and window ignoring Ladybug’s calls for him to wait. She’s exasperated but her earrings are beeping, meaning she has less than a minute left, so she detransforms, very briefly talks to Tikki, and retransforms and immediately uses her lucky charm, hoping it will give her some way to find Chat Noir
Meanwhile Adrien chases it (like a little cat chasing a butterfly aww) and somehow ends up in his father’s secret basement room, he sees Gabriel monologuing about “I failed this time but it’s only a matter of time before I save you-“ but then Mayura’s pops down the elevator like “sir there’s an intruder” and Adrien doesn’t quite know what’s going on but he’s absolutely panicking. Hawkmoth, still not knowing who chat noir is, tries to somehow monologue to explain himself but as soon as Adrien recovers he’s trying to fight Hawkmoth, he yells out cataclysm but he doesn’t know what to cataclysm, Hawkmoth says out loud that Emilie’s his wife so Adrien knows and doesn’t want to murder his father, especially not before he knows the whole story, and again, he’s pretty emotionally compromised and thinking is difficult. So he’s fighting both Hawkmoth and Mayura at once with one hand and ends up being pushed upstairs and then onto the roof (because obviously Gabriel’s first priority is to protect the secret coma mom room) and then Ladybug jumps back with some banter trying to keep the conversation going with chat noir and she can tell he’s hurting but she does manage to get the basic gist of what just happened (she doesn’t get Adrien’s identity though) There’s a lot better matched of a battle, although Mayura knocks away her lucky charm and it falls off the building, but then Hawkmoth’s like “I sense strong negative emotions coming from you” to Chat Noir (who he still has no idea is Adrien) and he calls out one of his roof akumas to evilize chat noir. We don’t see where the akuma lands because the camera is pointing at a terrified looking Ladybug.
So chat’s still unused catacliysm goes off, and we’re going with the theory that he somehow desptroys the moon and causes Paris to flood, and he also starts a giant storm, and Marinette doesn’t know what’s up at all but she’s very frightened obviouslys (so it’s snowing and the strreets are very slowi;y starting to fill with water but it’s not an instant flood) and then of course her earrings start beeping again which means that she’s going to detransform any minute and she’s like “wow, I do not feel very lucky right now.” Oh also, it literally wasn’t realized at first amid the chaos and also the building cracking but the blast seems to have just destroyed Hawkmoth and Mayura. At this point, chat blanc is just sitting still looking a little feral and crazy in his eyes, and Ladybug tries to approach him but he hisses aa her and she doesn’t know what his powers are but she doesn’t have time to deal with this now, she has like ten seconds before she detransforms, so she leaps off the building into some little alleyway right as her suit fades away, and she gasps for air and she’s trying to organize her thoughts enough to talk to Tikki but she’s just stuttering (also again there’s a storm so she’s freezing). And then of course, she turns around and Alix is staring directly at her. It doesn’t even matter what the lucky charm was but Alix is holding it and she’s like “I saw you drop this so I went to go try to pick it up for you” and it’s at that point that Marinette just starts absolutely sobbing. Alix has no idea how to comfort her but she just kinda pats her back and tries not to freak out about Tikki appearing (though her eyes do go a bit wide) but eventually she’s like “ok so obviously you’re Ladybug, would you mind filling me on on the rest of what’s going on because the storm’s getting worse.” And Marinette’s like “oh crap I totally forgot about that” Also just so we’re clear, Tikki isn’t mad at Marinette at this point, she’s doing her best to calm her down because so much craziness has happened anyways.
There’s not a lot of time to go in depth (20 minute time limit and we’re about 5-7 minutes in, the 5 minutes after Marinette uses her lucky charm should actually be five minutes of run time) but Marinette confirms that she’s Ladybug, that chat noir’s been akumatized, and that Gabriel Agreste is Hawkmoth and also that she feels very lost and she has no idea what to do now, she doesn’t have a plan. And then Alix is like “cool so it’s my turn right? I have the last chance kwami, I only come in when all hope is lost.” And Marinette’s like “Future bunnix said it is your Miraculous in the future, but I haven’t given that to you yet so it’s not really yours.” And Alix is like “well then it’s about time you gave it to me.” So Marinette manages to find Master Fu nearby (possibly using aforementioned lucky charm), picks out the rabbit Miraculous, and gives it to Alix. Marinette decides she needs help from past chat noir and she needs Alix to find him so she can figure out what specific emotional vulnerabilities he may have or what powers he might have, and her kwami says that she has the power of last chance, she can time travel long distance (much further than the snake) but because she’s still a child, she can only time travel once before recharging and she’s not really going to be able to control how far back she goes very well. She also will have less control if she goes through more time loops, so retrying things over and over again is a really bad idea that could easily end up with her trapped in ancient Egypt or breaking time. So she’s going to have one shot and she needs to use it however she can and then come back with whatever information she has, while trying not to break anything in the past timeline so that she doesn’t have to go back and change that too, if at all possible. The goal is to use her powers as little as she can while she’s still figuring it out. She asks Marinette to help her come up with a more specific plan and Marinette starts figuring things out but then chat blanc jumps into the alley where they’re hiding and Marinette yells “spots on!” so she can get superpowers back and then chat, who looks way the heck more like a threat now, starts fighting with Ladybug as Alix quickly last-chances her way out of there.
So just like with Ladybug and Chat noir, Bunnix has a 5 minute timer going, so she quickly gets to an alley, detransforms, and comes out to see that school just got out. Nathaniel waves at her and she’s like “sorry can’t talk right now” and dodges away before she can be seen by herself because she knows that her past self would be immediately suspicious and she doensn’t want to start something she can’t deal with. She’s trying to figure out what day it was, she doesn’t recognize it as any specific day but it seems to only be a week or so in the past at most. Also, Alix is narrating this to her kwami as she figures things out, and she very quickly deduces that Adrien is chat noir, but her kwami warns her not to reveal anyone’s secret identities to each other. So Alix finally spots Adrien, but he immediately gets into his car with a bodyguard, and Alix doesn’t think she’d be able to break into his house very well, she needs to find a way to get a note to him.
She does the logical thing first and tries to text him but her phone’s trying to text Adrien a few days too late (it’s still on her time) and so the messages won’t go through. She has no idea how to explain the situation to anyone so she can borrow their phone without suspicion, and she’s also just not thinking completely clearly (it is her first mission afterall), but the fact that she’s hiding and there’s only so many hiding places just outside of school leads to her seeing Marinette talking to Tikki. Tikki is trying to discourage Marinette from her plan to sneak a gift into Adrien’s house as Ladybug, because she could be seen and blow her identity, but Marinette’s like “I’ll be careful, it’s fine.” So Alix, clears her throat, and Marinette jumps while Alix pretends to not have seen the kwami, and proceeds to distract Marinette with whatever contrived conversations she can come up with.
“So… Marinette…. Physics class was fun today, wasn’t it?”
“Physics class was cancelled today, you were there.”
“Oh yeah! Of course, I just meant that it was fun… that we didn’t have it… How’s your art project coming along?”
“The one that was due yesterday?”
“YEP! Haha I’m so bad at turning things in on time.”
“Alix, I’d love to talk but I really need to go-“
“Oh no is that an akuma! Nevermind it’s just a pidgeon.”
Meanwhile the bunny kwami is sneaking a note that Alix had written to Adrien/ chat noir into Marinette’s gift. Could Alix have just snuck in herself? Probably. Is she still working out how to be logical because this is her first mission? Absolutely.
Marinette finally escapes and now needs to run before Adrien gets home, but surprise, she gets just barely too late and Adrien sees her sign the gift and leave as Ladybug. He sees that the signature on the gift says Marinette and he’s like “wait a minute that must mean that-“ and Plagg’s like “please don’t say it out loud. If you don’t say it out loud I can have plausible deniability and Tikki won’t murder me.”
Cut to outside, where it’s just starting to rain, and Marinette detransforms and Tikki’s like “oh my god Marinette he totally saw you. What did I tell you? You’re going to have to give up your miraculous now, I can’t just NOT tell Master Fu that this happened.”
At the same time, Adrien opens whatever the gift is and is super happy, but then he sees the note from Alix that implies she needs to talk to him about something Chat Noir related and he’s like “oh no this sounds like an emergency” so he heads out as quickly as he can, it takes him a minute to get past Natalie but he says he just needs to pick up something he dropped outside and then runs before she can argue.
Now, Marinette’s still just outside and she’s absolutely panicking about her identity being revealed and losing Tikki, and Tikki’s not yelling anymore she’s just sad she’ll likely have to say goodbye to Marinette because Marinette’s safety comes first. (Remember, Tikki knows that Adrien is chat noir.) Marinette’s feeling hopeless and mad at herself so of course Hawkmoth, without knowing the full situation, sends out an akuma for her, and Adrien sees first Marinette, and then the butterfly from the steps.
He basically knows that Marinette is Ladybug now, and he knows it would be disastrous if she were akumatized, so without thinking he runs while transforming and cataclysms the akuma an foot away from her face.
Marinette watched him do this, so she knows he’s Adrien right now, and Tikki’s like “sure why not, now I can at least explain to Marinette why this was so bad.”
Alix (who’s still here) has been watching from the sidelines and finally decides that enough things have already been messed up that she’s going to have to find a way to undo it anyway, so she goes up to them and does her best to briefly explain the situation.
They sit down and have an actual honest talk and a little bit of time to process the reveal, and Adrien looks really sad to find out his dad is Hawkmoth, but it’s like how he was at the end of Chameleon. He’s hurting but he’s not about to be akumatized.
Plagg, on the other hand, is reeling. He’s furious with Gabriel Agreste because he always suspected that he was a terrible father, he saw what Adrien wouldn’t, and he’s so attached to Adrien, Adrien doesn’t deserve this. And Alix, who hasn’t been doing this long enough to have formed presumptions, asks if kwamis can be akumatized. They all say they don’t think so but that’s not proven.
Eventually Alix has to head back, leaving Adrien and Marinette to have some serious conversations about there dual lives. However, as soon as Alix gets back to the present, she’s stopped by future, adult Bunnix. She winks at Alix and tells her she did an amazing job on her first mission, but she already knows what happened (obviously, because it’s her), and she can’t redo it herself because of the whole issue with time travelling multiple times increasing the chances of her breaking things. Alix was afraid that she didn’t get anything useful at all but Bunnix says that she got exactly what they needed and also everyone has to have their first mission at some point. She also tells young Alix that she (older Bunnix) can handle this battle, but there’s one more job that young Alix may have to do so she should just be ready for if she gets a not from older Bunnix
There’s a brief cut back to Marinette and Adrien outside the Agreste mansion, they both seem to realize that things can’t stay this way and that Bunnix is going to somehow undo this which is so sad because things make so much more sense now, and we get our first love square kiss. This is possibly also the scene that was written to make the audience cry. I haven’t decided if it’s going to be specifically undone within the events of the episode (time limits again) but it obviously didn’t happen because otherwise the future wouldn’t be what it is.
Back in the present, future Bunnix and Ladybug are fighting a wild chat blanc and trying not to get obliterated by random storms, there’s a really heartwrenching “I know you’re in there” fight, more so because Chat blanc doesn’t seem to want to do this. It’s clearly hurting him to see Ladybug in pain but he’s just so much more feral and out of control and he doesn’t know what he’s doing or how to control himself, and he’s scared.
Future Alix says that the akuma is in chat noir’s ring (she’s like 90% sure and the doubt is killing Ladybug because what if it’s not-) but Ladybug trusts her enough to sneak the rings away from chat noir and crush it, and luckily a purple butterfly comes out, which means that her miracle cure will fix everything. She also can’t help but realize that chat noir detransformed into Adrien as soon as his ring was gone. She says “Miraculous Ladybug” and everything’s sort of back to normal? But Adrien still looks like he’s in pain and Hawkmoth’s still nowhere to be found. So Plagg appears after this and it turns out that it was his negative emotions that Hawmoth sensed, and that the akuma attached to, and the fact that Plagg was more powerful and less in control of himself lead to chat noir going crazy like that. Because Plagg’s a kwami, Hawkmoth wouldn’t have been able to mind control him or force him to give up his Miraculous, so he was just exploding with power and negative emotions instead.
There’s a second scene of Adrien and Marinette dealing with the reveal, this time with a very different tone, they’re both so much more scared, and Bunnix says that it’s okay, they don’t have to know yet, she’s not going to force them but if they want she can undo it.
And Adrien asks what the point would be then, if they just give up it’s worth nothing, why are they even Ladybug and Chat Noir if they can’t handle the endgame.
And Bunnix says that that’s completely wrong. They’re still a little kitten and minibug right now, everyone starts out small, they don’t even realize how far they’ve come. Every akuma they face, every argument they get through together, makes them so much stronger, and it’s okay if they’re not quite to the endpoint yet, they’ve already become the best at being Ladybug and Chat Noir in all of Paris because they’ve been practicing and learning. Someday they’ll be ready, progress will sneak up on them until they’re more powerful than their current selves could imagine. And even now, what matters most is that they help in the little ways that grow, by helping individuals who have been akumatized and making residents of Paris feel safer, and by keeping the miraculouses safe.
So there’s a second love square kiss as they decide that it’s okay to save this as a problem for later instead of dealing with it now, and then the episode ends at the beginning with Alix skateboarding directly into Chat Noir before he can see the butterfly and chase it, and it’s implied that Alix still knows all even if it’s been erased from everyone else’s memories, and she’s holding the watch now.
Ladybug says goodbye to Chat Noir, still in her opening argument that he needs to be more careful next time, and Chat’s like “ok, fine, if it worries you that much I’ll be more careful” and they can both see that the other is stressed so they hug and part ways.

I'm really Going Through It™ right now and part of that is the therapy I'm doing which requires me to stop overriding my own boundaries and start listening to my body and actually resting and not pushing myself to be Useful™ and Productive™ and trying to Earn My Wretched Existence. I pretty much have to rewire my brain and it's really goddamn HARD like it has worked like this my ENTIRE life. It has become so deeply counterintuitive for me to act or even think in ways that are healthy and acknowledge my own humanity - which is to say, weaknesses, limitations.
And I am striving for balance but in an effort to challenge my preconceived notion that I have to be Good to be worth literally anything I am going all in on the counterintuitive front; I have been pretty much just aggressively doing nothing. And it’s really, really interesting because usually I would have at least like. gone for a walk or something by now. Not in an unhealthy way but just in a “God i need to move my body” way. Usually I would have cleaned the house, written a tonne, developed a new routine. Again, because I do enjoy those things and naturally gravitate towards them. Me not doing those things is - at this point - not about defying the nasty part of me brain. It’s just that I genuinely still physically need to do nothing. It’s reminding me a lot of when I started recovering from my eating disorder and for like a year I just had the most enormous appetite. I feel like my body is now finally allowing itself to feel the full extent of all the exhaustion it was forced to push through for a year and it’s demanding the rest it so desperately needs. Not to mention that my mind is purging all the trauma it accumulated while working, plus all the stress of actually quitting, dealing with centrelink, worrying about money. Then the last two weeks I’ve had PMDD level PMS on top of all of that plus my usual chronic pain, mental illness and usual toxic living situation. It’s no wonder I’m a screaming wreck; when I write it all down it’s really clear why I haven’t just sprung back up already after quitting. It’s been about a month but there still isn’t a tonne of certainty in the situation and the whole reason I quit in the first place is the toll it took on my health.
So to the actual, semi-relevant meat of this post: the nothing I’ve been doing is playing the sims. I’m the kind of person who is either not playing any games ever (I don’t even have a single game on my phone) or has let a game completely take over their life. Sims especially is all-consuming for me which is what I feel like I need at the moment. Of course I have to become capable of being present with my mind while defying it but for now while my body needs such intensive rest I think it’s best not to tempt the devil. Once I’ve recuperated a bit I can transition into different activities that don’t pull me out of myself quite so much. I am hoping that once this period is finished I’ll have recovered enough energy to mostly read as it’s not only more fulfilling than playing games but just more enjoyable for me and also manages to be absorbing without literally hijacking my brain lol. I need to start learning to be connected to my physicality and listening to my body so gaming isn’t really a longterm option (I mean ideally I will get back to creative output as well, just for like, my soul, but I am really trying not to put a timer on anything and just do bits and pieces whenever I can). So. The thing is. I don’t just want to read; I’ve been really, really wanting to reread RotE lately.
But... I just can’t seem to bring myself to do it. I barely read last year which is so depressing and yes I feel guilty about reading something I’ve already read when I have new books sitting on my shelf because I can find a way to feel guilty about anything and everything, but I am also genuinely hungry for all the breadth of diverse voices and stories just waiting there for me. It’s why I struggle to reread in general; I love stories and I want to experience as many of them as possible.
And it’s not that many books or series that I genuinely feel an urge to reread, but obviously RotE is special. It’s also even harder to commit to a reread of when you can’t help but think of rereading in terms of a trade-off of old stories and new; potentially I could read SIXTEEN(!!!!!) new books or I could read RotE again. I have always planned on doing so, but it just feels like a weirdly complicated choice atm. I think I’m kind of afraid that this powerful draw to RotE at this point in time is a subconscious belief that it will cut through the haze around me, open my heart back up and make me feel again. That’s a lot of pressure to put on a story that’s this important to me. Like, there is weirdly a lot at stake if I go into it with the wrong mindset. I don’t want to ruin it for myself in the long run because of timing.
And trust me I know a lot of this is just my mental illness trying to rob me of an experience that could be good for me - even just mildly good. I know in theory I could read a few chapters, realise it’s not the time and put it back on the shelf. I know I’m sitting in my room at 2am liveblogging an existential crisis based on whether or not I should reread a book series. I know!! But the act of consuming media that’s genuinely important to you can become really fucking complicated by mental illness. I so often get stuck in a cycle of putting off the experience of art I love because I don’t feel like I’m in the right space for it only to realise that the Thing I was waiting for to pass is hanging around a lot longer than expected and in the meantime I have been depriving myself of what could have been a sliver of hope, joy, thrill, laughter, empathy, escape, connection.
Idk what this post has even become lol. Perhaps it’s just a tiny insight into the absolute ridiculousness that is my inner monologue over the most superfluous decisions. But even after saying all of this “out loud” and realising how trivial it all is I can’t make up my mind. Possibly another part of it is that I don’t know if I’m going to be forced into another job and doomed to repeat the year from hell I’ve just had. I think if I had a bit of certainty that I will have an extended break from work I would be less worried about fitting as many new/different books in as rapidly as possible.
Anyway, basically I miss RotE and I need someone to make reading it my fulltime job so I can feel justified going back to it again and again. The saddest thing of all is how many fresh memes I know I would come up with through rereading :( rip

Utawarerumono: The False Faces ep 13-25 Liveblog
Gonna just straight up do individual episode comments, since the second half is gonna be denser in content. As with the first half, this is a rewatch and will have spoilers for the games.
Opening Comments: Man there’s not much movement in the animation but its beautiful all the same.
Ep 13:
- *spit take* why are they sending Rulu? IDK if it was because the directors weren’t informed about the whole “baby of the family” detail because I can’t imagine Shis letting this happen
- Interesting how instead being of a secret force that Oshtoru sent, Haku and gang are now the accompanying force to Rulu and Atuy.
- I’ll be pleasantly surprised if Entua makes more sense in the anime than in the games
- oh wow Dekopompo is even worse in the anime, straight-up running off on his own.
Ep 14:
- I like how instead of Atuy catching the arrow the twins have a force field. Granted, it make Atuy even more of a non-entity
- the extreme long shots of the CGI soldiers are really nice. I don’t feel like we see the loss of formations as they come into contact with each other often in war anime
- why are the twins running like that - imo that way too much movement for dainty girls (maybe I’ve watched too much anime)
- wow they totally recontextualized retrieving Shinonon and cut down a lot of potential runtime.
- did they seriously remove Atuy’s bloodlust
- you know open-eyed Ougi is growing on me, him and Nosuri have such lovely eye color
- poor Maroro
Ep 15:
- I’m relieved that the adaptation art makes Raiko look less like Lelouch. Always seemed like lazy design to me, him and Mikazuchi look nothing alike.
- did they introduce the telepaths in MoD? I can’t remember.
- that triple-take of Zeguni dying was just silly. If it were one slice x3 it would have been fine but this... Oshtoru be flexing with that mountain.
- I never really felt calling Witsu an Eva was quite right but with the Akuruturuka.... yeah I see it.
- truly we are in the war arc proper now.
- Heh wouldn’t it have been interesting to have the proxies’ subservience kick in instead of having the twins shield Haku. Oh well missed opportunities. IMO it would have worked well with the accelerated timeline the anime needed to achieve.
- what is with the triple takes this episode
- ah haku wasn’t even able to save them gg
- post episode revisiting the VN comments:
they hint at the telepaths, and as I thought the Vurai razing the city wasn’t in the VN. It was a good showpiece and works with Vurai’s characterization, but messes with Haku’s as a cost - the VN suggests that Haku inherently can be ruthless (he suggests scapegoating Moznu for Anju’s kidnapping, which the anime totally skips over), while it looks like the anime is gonna use this mass destruction as the reason for steeling his heart. I can’t say I hate that the writers chose to have the main characters in the fray, but it definitely requires more suspension of disbelief that everyone got out okay compared to the VN.
- Interestingly we don’t see Oshtoru’s mech form at all. I do like the increased bro scenes between Mikazuchi and Oshtoru
Ep 16:
- Yeah we immediately feel the ripples of that last episode changing Haku’s trajectory... its a logical trajectory but... ugh. I’m not sure how I feel about such a contrary Haku. It wasn’t really a thing in the VN? So frustrating augh. Utawarerumono was never a story big on moralizing about war... and the anime writers aren’t doing a great job adding it in.
- I’m 99% sure they pulled some of Ukon’s lines for comforting Haku here from a conversation they had in the VN waaaayyy back around the gigiri fight, making the scene all the more frustrating. The concepts of powerlessness and loss of life is something that Haku had been introduced to the moment he woke up and had already been working on dealing with. I can’t say its an invalid take that he’d be shook over mass destruction (I mean, most people would) but it’s a sharp deviation from the VN.
- Oh wow they’re totally gonna retool the banquet to deal with haku’s trauma instead of him dealing with his memories of being the LAST OF HIS KIND aren’t they.
- yeah they did
- oh god don’t say the word seduce haku, rulu’s gonna die from blood loss
- lol i don’t remember the twins being tied up
- rulu is dead
- and now haku is dead too. I think only Ougi and Yakutowaruto escaped unscathed.
- this did give me the bro bonding that I had been missing in the show thus far. Not enough drinking scenes! like literally the VN is literally just baths and booze between the action lol
Ep 17:
- ah finally the flashback episode. lol all the crunchyroll comments are like “watch the first season”.
- haku calling his new buddies family... oof mito’s knowing gaze makes it all the much sadder
- Haku:”did you need to go that far” Mito: “lemme do it again with Tuskuru”
- hah “reposition your camera” nice, easy way to not show his face
- heh stares at your sister-in-law’s butt, that’s actually a pretty subtle hint without adapting any of the monologue from the VN that he kinda had feelings for her
- damn this is probably the most complete vision of the future we get in any medium
- hey to be fair the ameterasu blast was mutsumi and not exactly a product of mankind fighting each other - but it does go to show just how little Mito knew about what was actually going down
- to continue with my frustration, we see that haku is called out by his bro that he has a habit of “conceal don’t feel” so it makes his emo bit last episode even more jarring - though in hindsight I guess his depression comes less out of the blue for his friends now - its just that the reason is misattributed
- oof “make up for lost time”
- ooh I like the final scene with Woshis as the delegate to Tuskuru. The VN did fine without it but man what a cliffie for those watching the first time.
Ep 18:
- oof we’re not going to have any shinonon/kiwru antics are we
- man I can’t wait to see Benawi - he was my favorite chara in Uta1 after Touka
- wow they really did just ignore the fact that Kiwru is the prince of Ennakamuy and cut him out of the party
- dugh never mind I don’t like ougi’s open eyes here
- speaking of ougi they totally glossed over his role as reconnaissance
- and have they even mentioned that nosuri is trying to retake their clan’s name?
- cocopo still best bird
Ep 19:
- of course you’ll be sweaty haku, boro boro only wears that brown undershirt in tuskur smh
- i love how all of the dads we see dote on their daughters so much
- of course only now do they mention the fact that atuy and haku are drinking buddies and we just have to take it at face value
- actually seeing those sailor uniforms in action make atuy’s regret that much funnier, the stills don’t quite do it justice (though really, it’s the sound effects carrying the team)
- lol the background soyankekur antics are great
- cocopooooo noooo damn this romance with mukkur is great
Ep 20:
- huhu woshis was allowed down to the underground garden huh
- benawiiiiiiiiiiiiiiii
- dang they didn’t use the hot air balloon ;-; so disappointing like if they do it this way they won’t even get to retake the supplies ;-;
- i guess its a good way to hint at kuon’s identity
- something is wrong with kurou’s face
- also where the fuck is nosuri - i know kiwru is a lost cause for this show but nosuri too? they really are trying to wipe out the tactics seen in the VN
- i do think the line about kurou’s line to kuon about “ripping the country in half” is nice - can’t remember if it was in the VN but at this point most of the good lines seem to be coming out of the VN
- ugh the twins are such a cop out, still think they should have went with the hot air balloon strategy
- we hardly knew ye mito
Ep 21:
- dang I’m pleasantly surprised by these CG soldiers
- bye bye munechika, still salty you can’t turn into a mech
- oof “I’m sure my mom was someone like you” this show lives and breathes on dramatic irony
- bye bye anju, what was the point of actually having oshtoru there when the tea was delivered? makes him seem more incompetent than he is, though entua was nowhere to be seen - imo for the best
- oshtoru, an honorable man through and through, giving up your mask, lowkey too honorable for your own good
- okay one of my favorite things is how regularly dekopompo is ignored during the generals’ council meetings; overlapping voices isn’t really a thing in the VNs due to its nature as a written medium first and foremost
- oh interesting Oshtoru’s men are coming to defend him that’s new
- oh no torture time ;-;
- post episode VN notes: ugh they also dropped the Woshis power grab of locking Dekopompo and Raiko outside of the gates
Ep 22:
- Yes go be a dad Yakuto and stop Nekone from doing stupid shit please oh please oh please
- Man they are seriously retooling oshtoru’s downfall aren’t they - wish it didn’t come off so crudely planned. Like, y’all know Oshtoru is loved by the people, did the generals not think some sort of rioting would happen if you let that info go public? Granted the original plot of having Entua sneak the info out is pretty contrived... but at least it better preserves the perceived competency of the generals by forcing a smaller timeframe in which everything goes down.
- man people watching this will be so confused next season when they realize Kiwru is a prince
- wut Kuon you should know you probably won’t be able to get info to the princesses once y’all leave. Good that Shinonon is going on ahead to Ennakamuy though.
- eh are they’re gonna try leaving by sea this time? even though Ennakamuy is in the mountains?
- secret tunnel ~ ♫
- aw no Evenkuruga reveal for Nosuri and Ougi. Though, I guess the anime never established that their base was in the Hakuorokaku basement...
- you know, since they just generalized the jamming barrier it’s kinda nice to see that the gang had to sneak in the hard way. IMO that’s one of the “game design justifies the plot” moments - the VN tries to keep everyone together so you can have all your unit options when fighting, but let’s be honest smaller strike teams work at times.
- oh hi Honoka, you’re not arrested here? guess not.
- oh god have they been translating Atuy’s “onii-san”s as “mister” this whole time? I can’t say that “love” was a better translation but that’s just tragic
- I wish we got more hints that haku actually has been doing some training (aka the SRPG parts of the game) rather than these random moments of competency and knocking out the guards.
- good god oshtoru your honorableness is gonna be the death of you. how can you trust Vurai. Seriously idk how it’s gonna turn out here, but Vurai literally wants to see Anju dead in the VN.
- ok i lie splitting the party was a terrible idea. they are taking way too long to convince oshtoru to take a stand. these men are way too stubborn. jk its fine
- whelp there goes the boat
- aw yeh Yakutowaruto lets go
Ep 23:
- Yakutowaruto continues to be a badass
- ugh and of course Oshtoru gets hurt, and he’s not gonna tell anyone
- ok I’m enjoying how acrobatic these twins are
- the plot change ripples continue to be seen; there’s no distractions at the gates since dekopompo is inside the gates. Raiko’s strategy stuff does make for good tension tho.
- ugh the fact that Soyankekuru is in the capital is gonna complicate things. The moment Atuy is seen to defect he’s screwed. That’s gonna change the timeframe of things second half.
- lol Kuon god powers time, hope there weren’t too many casualties. Poor Nosuri now has two sacks of people to deal with...
- ok I feel like I’m seeing more poor art quality this episode
- wow it seems that everyone’s on board for some arson today
- bruh don’t take him through the sewers Oshtoru’s wound’s gonna get infected
- oh god who thought it was a good idea to give Rulu a blade.
- Cocopo best bird. Period. MVP.
- Soyankekuru, what a guy.
Ep 24:
- ooh mech fight in the city? oh nvm its just a sword fight. a sword fight between two beasts. thank god vurai ain’t that dumb
- wait they said there was a barrier in the palace, but i don’t think there was a barrier for the outer walls? why the frick didn’t the twins just teleport out for the last bit? they were pretty close to the gates... unless they needed the gates open anyways?
- vurai? not dumb? scratch that, good god do y’all not care about the safety of the people? guess not cuz it’s MECH FIGHT TIME (ok, if we’re honest oshtoru’s the one who initiated so yes he’s equally dumb)
- water vs fire, groudon vs kyogre, this is what animation is all about YASSS
- the twins’ shield is too OP
- haku please stop indulging Nekone
- will the twins actually be able to seal Vurai? they were kind of trash at doing their job in the VN (though they did have the good excuse of being exhausted for this particular instance)
- ok that nekone running sequence is jank
- damn haku blocked that punch? oh no he’s on fire
- looking like nekone’s “it was my fault” is gonna be part of a cascade of setbacks rather than the final blow. I’m kinda glad - the VN’s take was probably the most exasperating part of the whole story - gutwrenching but also made me want to punch her. I’m up for arguing whether or not taking that away was a good thing
- oh no the salt. no. how could you put it at the post-credits scene.
- vurai’s confirmed dead? that could be a problem next season.
Ep 25:
- dang what an opener giving us no info just kuon looking sad. we had emo haku now get ready for emo kuon i guess
- nuedori is probably my favorite song after kimi ga tame, such a good song to overlay the time skip over
- man anime viewers must be so confused. like they saw Haku and Oshtoru get out of town but only Oshtoru show up. man this is so effed up.
- no not the fan noooo augh  brokoro in the kokoro
- sad nekone really sells it doesn’t it
- dang I knew Ennakamuy was surrounded by mountains but I guess the anime went and interpreted that as a CRATER
- at least kuon didn’t leave until later in the night?
-i know the twins did a spell in the VN as well but seeing the visual change between haku and oshtoru is a bit silly
- what’s with the flower field that’s so cheesy
- i can see why someone said laughed rather than cried during this particular use of kimi ga tame - the alternating shots to his saltification is just silly, there’s so many prettier shots for showing people dissolving - like the VN gave you a very serviceable “standing on a cliff as the sun rises and you fade into dust” why didn’t you take it
- side note in the VN i was imagining it something like this scene from CCS but different lighting (sorry I could only find the english dub on short notice, timestamp at 1:13:24):
youtube
- also how could you get everyone off model during such an important part
- you know what I’m just gonna pretend that there was some really bad production crunch so they had to do a rush job smh
- i do like this orchestration tho
- oh god the cheese never ends, now it’s raining
- that said it’s not terrible, but definitely missing something compared to the VN
- haha with some of your decisions next season you might just end up in Denebokshir Haku. jk we all know how it ends
- boro boro ;-; yes go hug your kid she needs all the comfort she can get

nycttophilic replied to your post “( am i like the only chalastor shipper that doesn’t like ‘ smiling man...”
I mean......that’s my OTP for Charlie and I’ve never heard of that fic before XDD
Tumblr media
( gonna go ahead and put this under a cut because i uhh ... apparently had a LOT of things to say about this fic PFF
i just see art and stuff for it in the tags a lot. it’s a human au fic in which everyone has their demon names for?? some reason that’s never explained?? like you seriously couldn’t come up with better names for husk or niffty?? angel dust’s name gets explained as a nickname, but it’s not questioned AT ALL for several chapters which is mega weird set in the 20s, based on this au comic
but i think the problem is, the author didn’t ... quite get why that comic strip worked with these characters. they got al as a creepy, superficially charming gentleman down fairly well and i admire that they’re willing to write him as an unsympathetic sociopath. like honestly, his inner monologue and how he justifies each action to himself is genuinely fuckin’ creepy and does a good job of capturing the incredible ego and manipulative nature people like him can have.
but charlie’s written as way too trusting and easily won over. in the original comic, she’s clearly not very trusting of alastor or pleased with his condescending attitude towards her. in the fic itself, these moments are kinda just ... brushed off? they don’t really influence charlie’s overall opinion of him. charlie’s just written as bafflingly STUPID and oblivious the entire fic, because if she questioned any of what was happening too hard or was even remotely critical of alastor’s behavior towards her, a romance would never happen because al does literally fucking nothing to earn it. he even puts charlie in situations with the hope of humiliating her because it’s funny to him. his only interest in her in the story is because he wants to kill and eat her. that’s it. yeah the author TRIES to sell the audience on the idea he’s developing feelings for her or whatever, but it just doesn’t track.
like if your fic has me genuinely hoping my favorite character fucking dies and the point of the fic is SUPPOSED to be him getting together with the girl, you’ve got a problem.
throw in that angel literally just exists in the fic to cheer on the idea of charlie and alastor getting together -- i still don’t get why this is such A Thing in chalastor fic, given angel doesn’t really even seem to like alastor that much and just finds his entire schtick funny more than anything, and mimzy is just there to cause Needless Relationship Drama by being ~ the jealous rejected woman ~ that we’re apparently ... NOT supposed to cheer for even when alastor is being absolutely foul to her?? idk man i fucking hate how this fandom writes the alastor - mimzy dynamic sometimes, she pretty much just exists to be his punching bag that takes all his abuse because she wuvs him or to be creepy and possessive of him
which is why i always write alastor as genuinely liking her and finding her charming, because fuck the whole ‘ this asshole man treats a woman like shit but it’s OK she puts up with it ’ thing it’s stupid and i hate it. )

ASM vol 5 #25/826 Story 1 Thoughts
Tumblr media
Wow!
Now THIS is how you do a milestone issue...even though the milestone was last issue but whatever!
In some ways this issue reminded me of a lot of DC’s recent milestone issues for the Trinity. Wonder Woman’s 75th Anniversary special, Action Comics #1000, Detective Comics #1000.
By this I mean you have multiple artists contributing and the story feels like vignettes.
The difference though is that most of these vignettes are in fact part of the same story.
The downside of that is that it does make the main story ‘Opening Night’ feel somewhat disjointed because there are 3 or 4 endings. It could’ve been easily fixed by simply presenting the Syndicate pages and the Gleason pencilled pages as their own stories (which functionally they are) or at least as clearly labelled epilogues.
That’s a nitpick though because the main story over all was fantastic, no pu....actually pun very much intended. Why not Spencer likes his puns and meta jokes and there was plenty of the latter in this issue. Case in point Kindred’s jabs about continuity.
Let me get some minor negatives out of the way.
The changing artists really, really didn’t complement one another exempting Kev Walker and Ottley’s work. Ramos’ artwork wasn’t well integrated with the rest of the art at all, as was the case with his work in the Heist arc back in the earlier issues. Gleason’s work I will give a little more of a pass too because as presented it feels so much like it’s own separate story and has consistent art within those pages it’s not really a problem. But with Ramos and Ottley it’s very jarring.
Now it is the lesser evil because I’d rather have Ramos draw some pages and panels rather than the whole issue. Reserving him for, let’s face it, the less important B-plot of the main story whilst Ottley does the heavy lifting on the main story is a great compromise.
Other small complaints I have involve Mary Jane herself and her storyline.
For starters...Carlie Cooper is back. Now she isn’t used badly, it’s just...I hate that character. I don’t think many people have many positives to say about her and there is baggage associated with her. So if she is destined to become MJ’s go to buddy then that’s going to grind my gears (especially when we consider she let MJ risk her life by dating Otto in Superior, what a jerk!) and I’d infinitely prefer a wholesale new character or an old established character (Liz, Glory, Jill Stacy even?).
Buuuuuuuut on the flipside Carlie was better suited to being MJ’s sidekick in this story given she got involved in some of the action. Possibly even seeing her get zapped was Spencer putting in a piece of catharsis for the many fans he knows honestly hate this character.
Secondly we got MJ’s acting career. Now there are three little problems I have with it that might not even be problems. Let me explain.
a)      MJ claims she lost her Secret Hospital job because of the nature of her life. I took that very much as an implication associated with her connection to Spider-Man. Problem is...she didn’t lose her job because of Spider-Man. Her role just happened to be cut back and eventually if I remember correctly she either quit following a deranged fan assaulting her or she was outright fired. Now in defence of her comment and of Spencer, the line doesn’t explicitly mention Peter or anything like that so it could easily be taken as her life being in general crazy regardless. Bear this in mind for something else I’m going to bring up
b)      MJ claims she never liked being famous. That really struck me because of course MJ wanted to be famous from day 1. Now you could easily argue that when we first met MJ she was younger and had yet to experience fame, so now she feels differently. Buuuuuuut she was a model in her adulthood. She pursued acting as a soap star, and as a movie star and as a stage star and took a job at Stark industries and at various points was modelling during those jobs. Soooooooooo what gives? I mean....maybe you could say she hated aspects of being famous but the speech seems weird and inconsistent in and of itself even. I’m hoping I’m just missing something
c)       MJ says she had trouble fitting in and then over did it in social situations. I dunno if that’s really true. It could be bad phrasing on Spencer’s part but really MJ always did fit in, her facade helped her to fit in, it was partially engineered to help her to do that. Is that what he means though?
d)      MJ becoming a famous actress again gives me mixed feelings. Spider-Man is the everyman and whilst temporary fame that comes crashing down is one thing, if she is long term famous it kind of meddles with the everyman aspect of Spider-Man. An aspiring actress, even a low key soap star is different a more if you will ‘domestic’ form of fame. But that’s more a criticism of where this might lead so it could wind up being fine.
One final, final little problem I had was another example of worried where this MIGHT lead. In Kindred’s lair we see a wall depicting different Spider-Heroes and so now I’m facepalming that the climax to his storyline will be a huge crossover event affair that demands I read Miles and Gwen’s and Jessica Drew’s titles.
Again a nitpick at best, at worst something to worry about in the future not the present.
Everything else in the main story was beautiful.
MJ’s connection to acting is restored. Wonderful. It’s my preferred profession for her because it taps into Peter’s double life and her own history with her party girl facade.
The speech was well written and delivered and I liked the meta aspect of her giving it whilst disguised as a famous super hero wife!
Spencer continued to find a way to handle the old criticism lobbied against MJ/the marriage that it Mary Jane simply waited by a window (even though I think that’s fine sometimes) or just got stood up on dates all the time by having MJ have friends she can hang out with. This is one aspect where Carlie, because she is in on the secret, helps a lot I must admit.
Spencer also renders Mary Jane very well rounded.
Look I LOVE seeing instances where Mary Jane shines as cool, as bad ass and the like, but sometimes if handled poorly it can come off as idolizing her.
Spencer avoids this by giving MJ flaws.
She’s jealous of Melanie’s success which she sees as something that could have been her’s.* She has tiny doubts about Peter’s sincerity. She admits she struggles to fit in and feels uncomfortably exposed in the limelight.
But she’s also, brave, self-sacrificing, resourceful and, most importantly in this story, a good actress (apparently being able to impersonate Melanie’s voice...or maybe that’s something no one thought about because this is a non-audio medium).
The effect is to make Mary Jane truly the hero of the story, not just because she is ‘taking point’ in the main story but because she feels complex and nuanced, just as Peter is.
My quibbles above aside, Spencer really is a good Mary Jane writer and for Spider-Man that’s an important consideration for a writer (just as being a good Lois Lane writer or good Alfred writer is for Superman and Batman). He’s done her justice 99% of the time he’s written her and it says an awful lot about him and his priorities for this title that he’d give the lion’s share of a milestone issue over to her.
It also says a lot of his abilities to make good stories out of well...clean up duty.
Let’s be brutally honest here the majority of Spencer’s issues have revolved around stories really designed to fix things after BND and Slott’s run.
Back to Basics fixed Peter and MJ’s relationship and mostly reconstructed Peter’s character by having him own up to the diploma debacle and zero in on who the man was and who the spider was by literally separating the two.
The Heist reconstructed Peter and Felicia’s relationship and fleshed out why MJ and Peter were getting back together as quickly as they did.
Those poorly drawn Bachalo issues fixed Ned Leeds not being dead.
Hunted fixed Kraven not being dead and Shed and more stuff with Felicia
Now this issue has fixed MJ and Peter’s future’s to some extent. Peter is back at ESU and MJ is back to acting. Not only does she now have a Stark free job situation but it’s a job that’s her home away from home as I discussed a bit above.
The issue also does some clean up with Curt Connors, restoring the pre-Hunted status quo and by extension facilitating something else comfortingly familiar by having Connors teach Peter.**
Speaking of Connors, I can’t recall off the top of my head (having not eaten breakfast yet) if Connors had safehouses before now to keep him safe from his family. I know that has been the case in other stories, such as the Forever Young novel from a couple of years ago, but in the comics I can’t recall. If not then it’s a great thing for Spencer to integrate. If so it’s a great thing for Spencer to have remembered and gives Spider-Man a meaningful subplot to work with whilst Mary Jane takes the limelight in the main plot.
Now let’s move onto Mysterio. As I predicted last issue the doctor was Rinehart but I was mistaken in believing it was the real Rinehart. Spencer, and Mysterio, were so good at their jobs that I was successfully fooled into thinking Mysterio really had died last issue. The idea that Rinehart was really Mysterio and Mysterio was really someone else never occurred to me and was an ingenious twist.
But like all good mysteries it had clues right there for us to see as last issue signposted the disappearance of Mysterio’s former doctor,  who we now know was tricked into becoming Mysterio so beck could escape. What sold it was the inner monologue of Rinehart talking about Beck as a separate person. This would’ve been a cheap trick under a lesser writer but Spencer justifies it by claiming Mysterio was method. Just brilliant. As was tying in MJ’s agent and new found fame to Mysterio and his film script.
We also get some more tantalizing tidbits about Kindred. He doesn’t like killing innocent people if he doesn’t have to. The idea of him being an established villain now looks much less likely. And did you notice that when we first see him in the issue...he’s sticking to the wall...surrounded by spiders...and later has them crawling out of his bandages...and is targeting other Spider people...hmmmmmmmmmmmmmmm????????????????
That about does it for what I call the ‘main main story’, we move now onto what should’ve been epilogues.
There isn’t much to say about the Syndicate pages beyond they were good for what they were, they eloquently tie into the main story and set up the next arc.
Much more interesting are the Gleason pages, and not just because the art looks so nice and so much better than Ramos.
On the one hand I am wary of Spider-Man comics bringing in too much of the shared universe because it messes up a lot of the drama and stakes. But as a little side story meant to set up something else that’s fine and what a set up.
Spider-Man 2099 is back!
Now I feel like I should really catch up on his solo book. I kept buying it but stopped reading it around Civil War II!
I honestly have NO IDEA where this is going beyond thinking it might have something to do with Kindred’s interest in all the other spider people??????
Beyond all that...not much to say.
I’m not going to tell you that I recommend you pick this issue up because....c’mon...you know you already did...and loved it!
*Importantly, if Spencer intended it this way, MJ missed out on Melanie’s success because of something not  connected to Spider-Man. I was worried the story was going in for this idea that being with Peter has cost Mary Jane a successful career, but in this issue, through Melaine we see that wasn’t the case.
MJ’s life led her to quit a role that was already being reduced but it wasn’t because of Spider-Man stuff at all.
This is not just refreshing and healthy for their relationship, it’s also realistic. Take that every bullshit AU about MJ being famous by not dating Spidey!
**By the way I was going to criticise Connors having both arms in human form but then I double checked issue #2 and that was the case there too. I keep forgetting that he has both arms now it’s just so weird to see.

Note
so I’m not sure how cute this request is but you can literally take straw and turn it to gold as far as writing goes!! so becoming good friends w one of the boys girlfriends and them introducing you to the band when they’re in town near you and you become really good friends w Daniel and then it slowly becoming more as time passes and he shows up to your dorm randomly to tell you he loves you bc he can’t hold it in anymore
Aww, you’re so sweet! Thank you!
I’m not actually all that creative when it comes to college campuses, and don’t write about my own, so Columbia is my go-to, (my heart doesn’t reside in NYC anymore, but dear god, do I love that city) and there’s nothing quite like being kissed soundly under those lights so, I hope you think this is gold anyway
(Also, it was an adorable request.)
You became friends with Christina by accident.
Seriously, by accidentally falling into her lap on the subway.
To be fair, you were shoved by a businessman too engrossed in his iPhone to notice you, and she thought it was hilarious, but still; it was an accident.
She liked your sneakers and the brand of the empty coffee cup in your hand, and you recognized her from a dozen other early morning subway rides downtown because your route to the Met for Monday art history ‘field-trips’ happened to coincide with hers for her early morning FIT classes.
Christina decided it was fate, and now you were friends, without your input, because she’s that type, and you adore that about her.
The first time she introduced you to the boys, you thought you were being dragged to Times Square for a weirdly touristy lunch to meet her mysterious always ‘traveling’ boyfriend.
Instead, when you arrived at her apartment makeup-less and wearing leggings, she ambushed you. You left, firmly suspicious, wearing her leather jacket and fake eyelashes.
You were grateful for both, however, when instead of lunch you ended up backstage at TRL, shaking hands with a boy with the cutest smile you’d ever seen, Christina introducing you by announcing, “Hey, Dani, have you met your soulmate?”
Your cheeks went immediately pink, but she just kept talking, grinning, “Her sheets are watermelon.”
“I mean, they’re mostly white,” You were confused by this whole conversation, but he just kept smiling, your hand still in his.
“With watermelons!” Christina seemed ridiculously giddy to share that fact, then immediately resumed her quest to find out exactly how much of Corbyn’s, her not-so-mysterious anymore boy-bander boyfriend, clothing she could remove before they had to go on stage.
And Daniel still hadn’t let go of you.
It started with voicenotes. Daniel’s voice in seconds and melodies you couldn’t help dancing to. Your return messages all variations on the theme of, “How are you so talented?” and “It’s perfect. You could try going higher, maybe. But it’s perfect.”
Then it was facetime. Hours of explaining your homework and listening to his sleepy monologues about history and architecture and getting lost in whichever city they were performing in. Sometime around November, when Daniel took to reminding you every morning to water Franklin, the tiny cactus on your windowsill, you realized you were in love with him.
Now, it’s January, and you still haven’t done anything about it. What do you say to your best friend when the only thing you‘re capable of thinking of lately is kissing him?
It gets so dark so early in the winter here that walking back to your dorm from dinner at Christina’s apartment it might as well be midnight.
You’re nearly home, striding through the campus gates, when you see him.
Clearly lost, wondering around between the rows of trees covered in fairy-lights, because the man can hum Mozart flawlessly, but completely lacks any kind of internal compass.
“Daniel?” You’re utterly incapable of suppressing the smile his presence inspires.
He turns towards you, his jacket zipped all the way up to his neck and a crazy colored beanie covering all his hair, “Hey,” He drags out the word, obviously trying to be cool for some reason you can’t fathom.
“What are you doing here?” You move closer, and wrap your arms around his waist.
“I, um,” He stutters.
You step away, because he isn’t hugging you back, “Is something wrong?”
Daniel wrings his hands together, and nods.
Your face falls, and his eyes go wide.
“Oh, god,” He grabs you by your arms, “Not with you!” He shakes his head, “I mean, sort of…”
“You’re kind of freaking me out here, bud,” You look into his eyes, trying to read his mind.
Daniel takes a deep breath, “I don’t want to be your bud.”
“Um,” Being stabbed might’ve been less painful than hearing that, and you don’t know what to say.
“No,” He rushes out, “God, no. That’s not,” He pulls you closer, and you’re helpless in his arms, “I don’t want to be your bud, babydoll, because I want to be your boyfriend.” Daniel has an excellent ear so, of course, he hears your tiny shocked inhale. “I’m so in love with you, it’s insane. I haven’t written anything in days, except your name next to mine, and I ditched the guys at the airport because I had to see you. I can’t quit thinking about you.”
He gives you a minute, holding you tight, then whispers, a little bit nervous and a lot more amused because he knows you, “Well, are you going to say anything?”
“I love you too?” It’s muffled into his chest.
“Is that a question?” He asks back, his breath hot in your ear.
“No?”
“Good,” Daniel slides his hands up, and then, suddenly, you’re kissing in the center of the sidewalk, ten feet from the guard-stand, lit up by the sparkling lights surrounding you, your tongue tracing the gap in his teeth you’ve been dreaming about for weeks and the sting of his bite at your bottom lip, and it’s so, so, indescribably good.
Just like him.
…
*super shy self-promotion* If you’re interested, I wrote a variation of a story similar to this (but much, much longer) centered on Jack on AO3. I think it’s pretty cute?

Younger post-ep ramble 6x09
After the very public outing of Liza’s real age last week, it was no surprise that this week’s Younger episode, ‘Millennial’s Next Top Model’, was all about the fallout. In true Younger style we were treated to some unexpected twists and turns, saw Kelsey take control at work and in her personal life and welcomed back my #1 mega-villain who I hate-love fiercely, Quinn Tyler.  This ep was written by Grant Sloss, who is responsible for a number of my favourite episodes and lot of my fave moments in the series and one thing I am always blown away by is his ability to craft character interactions in which the sentiment and emotion are really palpable (plus the one-liners are always top of the game) and we certainly saw a number of those this week.  Even though Liza is 100% responsible for the position she now finds herself in, my heart went out to her this whole episode and Kelsey, Charles and Diana’s show of solidarity right from the get-go pretty much sums up everything I love about this show.
I need to say upfront that while I know this episode is all about Liza, it is hands down my favourite episode of Kelsey’s in the series. In a time of real pressure and stress, we see Kelsey step up in the role of publisher, starting with the damage control team meeting in her office. I have big feelings about this opening moment, in which Diana proves why she is an actual Queen who rises above past grievances and now offers unwavering support of Liza while continuing to have zero time for Zane’s bullshit (the ‘well mercifully they have a paywall now’ to Zane’s New York Magazine tidbit was all of the yes). We learn of the deal with Infinitely 21 (was it just me or did anyone else get heart flutters at the thought of Kelsey, Diana and Liza being their brilliant selves and brokering that arrangement? Just me? Cool) and I have spoken of my love for the way this show parodies real life things but this might take the cake. Alexa, what are synonyms for ‘forever’? I just adore that it is very clear that Kelsey is in charge and that Charles and Diana are offering up potential solutions (Diana’s ‘rest her a bit’ is so in character I cannot. Between that and Charles’ thoroughbred thighs from season 4 I fully expect her to have a couple of horses upstate somewhere called Charles and Liza by the end of this series), meanwhile Zane clearly still hasn’t caught on to the fact that these three are not going to throw Liza under a bus.
Enter Liza as he’s ending his tirade about her poisoning the company (and lbh, what he is saying isn’t actually ridiculous from a business p.o.v but he’s talking about the best friend, girlfriend and (old) maid of honour of the people in the room) and it’s awkward af and pretty awful and I want to climb through my screen, wrap Liza in a blanket and tell her it’s all going to be ok. Zane’s extreme over-estimation of his importance in Liza’s life continues when he tells her that what he’s saying can’t be personal because ‘I don’t know who you are’ (worth it for Charles’ ‘Zane’ reprimand though amirite) and as I said after last week’s episode, I can’t even count on one hand the number of interactions Zane and Liza have had so yes Zane, that is accurate and nothing to do with her age reveal. At least once he discovered that Kelsey has known about the lie he FINALLY has a reason to be hurt (maybe? Still a little fuzzy on this one) and look Zane saying they’re all insane might be somewhat accurate but everyone in that room loves Liza and I love all of them so I felt personally attacked tbh.
Keeping with the stellar guest star casting this season, Shelly Rozansky (played by Annaleigh Ashford) is every kind of irritating as brand rep of Infinitely 21. Kelsey and Liza’s meeting with her, in which Shelly explains that 'the tea’ is that their authentic brand cannot be associated with Millennial’s inauthentic one (I love the moral high ground re: brand but I’m pretty sure Millennial doesn’t have factory workers making less than a living wage so…) and this very real ramification of Liza’s lie paves the way for one of Liza’s best moments on the show to date.
Taking that tea of Shelly’s and throwing it in her face, Liza’s monologue that 'everyone is pretending to be younger’ reaches it’s climax with the zinger, 'Millennial is not an age, it’s an attitude and if you can’t sell that, we’ll go somewhere else’, and Kelsey’s look of pride, same girl SAME. One thing I have commented on in the past is that as a '26 year old’ Liza rarely, if ever, really stood up for herself. The few times we’ve seen her do so have been as the forty year old who takes no crap from anyone (David, Charles, Don) so I am here times a million for strong ass Liza to finally shed that guilt, know her worth and be able to show this side of herself now that the lie is no longer in play (I feel like Diana will dig this very much).
Turns out Shelly was quite into Liza’s feisty outburst too ('what you screamed at me today, justifiably, we’re still friends promise…it resonated’ = award winning line/delivery combo), as she calls to let Liza know they’re going to unfreeze the partnership and asks Liza to be the face (and legs) of Infinitely 21’s Spring campaign. This phone call takes place in a very delicious looking cupcake shop where Liza and Charles are playing cards with his daughters in an all round delightful family situation that gives us a glimpse of the Miller-Brooks dynamic and makes the point that after a pretty terrible day, Liza is grateful to have this in her life to counter all the drama. I am also pleased to see that Bianca and Nicole have been located (meanwhile Caitlin, Beth and all of Josh’s friends remain stuck in the Upside Down or have become bunker people or something equally ominous I fear).
I am very into a number of aspects of this entire scene: a) Charles eating candy just up and gets me for some reason. I don’t know why, I can’t explain it, but it’s akin to seeing him walking round barefoot, it confuses my brain but I’m pretty sure I like it; b) Bianca is clearly the fave child with her cute little, 'I won’t take your last bag of candy Liza’ (lol at Charles’ 'wow’ when Liza offers that up for the taking btw, he knows that’s a serious gamble) though I was 100% Nicole as a kid; c) those kids are so not sleeping after all that sugar so I hope they’re staying at Pauline’s, while Charles’ dad game is strong with the breakfast cupcakes and; d) Charles kissing Liza on the cheek as she takes Shelly’s call is so damn sweet (pun intended) and supportive and I love that Liza suggesting he go stand with the girls in case she starts crying again indicates she has been an open mess around him. It’s writing like this that I really appreciate when there is so much to fit into an episode, because it provides insight into the kind of relationship Liza and Charles have when there simply isn’t time to show it.
Tumblr media
While Liza is drowning her sorrows in candy and cupcakes, Maggie is at the brilliantly cringy art exhibit, 'Masculinity Detox: A Softer Male Gaze’. Look I have to be honest, I was really happy to see Oded Fehr because he can play a skeeze with charm like no other, but I don’t know how I feel about this entire plot. I can only comment on it from a straight perspective, so I am aware that I’m not really in a position to express an opinion in relation to the impact of showing a gay character thinking it’s a good idea to sample a penis every ten years or so, but I certainly feel like it’s problematic. In relation to this character though, it is consistent with Maggie sleeping with Tommy Minetti (and his sister Tammy) as a result of Berlin’s 'Take my Breath Away’ (I don’t know why I remember that, I can’t remember what month it is yet this stuff is right there) and there is no denying that there were actual sparks between Maggie and Rafael in the loft, the palpable chemistry that Grant Sloss’ eps seem to draw out on full display.
Another dimension of Maggie that I love seeing emerge in this ep is that while she is usually a total badass in absolute control, every now and then we see that her judgement of character is just way off. There was Montana, those weirdo art collectors who actually collect artists and now this guy. I love that there’s a side of her that gets a bit blinded by flattery so she thinks 'what the hell?’ and the inevitable 'oh I CAN-NOT with this bullshit’ that follows, usually very publicly - Exhibit A: Maggie countering dirtbag Rafael’s, 'I’ll change you mind, I’m a flipper’ with a literal flip of the restaurant table once she realises she was simply another conquest. She seems so unflappable that these reminders that she’s fallible (I legit sometimes forget she’s not an actual super hero) are really great and maintains the 'flawed human’ aspect this show does so well. Honestly, other than Liza in a full tracksuit (sweat clothes?? I don’t know what it is in American but that cute pink sweat top and sweatpants combo) thinking they were being robbed and very confused by what had happened (so were we all lbh and Kinsey 9 LOL), it was Maggie equating sex with a man to being suffocated by a damp rug that was the highlight of this entire storyline for me. So damn funny.
Diana continues to have Liza’s back as she heads to the photo-shoot to steer her away from anything pleather (I may need a spin off of these two or some kind of one off special episode that’s just an elaborate Diana/Liza adventure, maybe rescuing Caitlin and co. from the bunker??), but not before we catch Kelsey still slaying it as a boss as she leaves a voicemail for the increasingly petulant Zane. Hearing her so firm and sure of herself is brilliant and the friendship vibe between Diana and Kelsey is peaking and I am loving every bit of it. I am so glad we heard Diana asking Kelsey how she took the lie, while Diana was able to forgive and move forward it would have been strange if we didn’t see her still processing some of it this week. Plus it’s Diana who points out that Zane’s tantrum is not because Liza is who he is upset with (and THANK YOU Kelsey for pointing out that Liza and Zane hardly know each other).
Rather than letting the whole Zane thing fester away, Kelsey continues to impressively show initiative by going to Zane’s and offering to cook dinner (which Zane knows is a lol and it’s not long before he’s cooking, so well played Kels) to give him the opportunity to ask anything he wants and she will answer honestly. Once a proper explanation of why Liza lied and why Kelsey kept it from him is given, Zane suddenly reverts back to being a rational human being which is a relief because he was fast becoming the worst (though his comment that they were all bad liars, what now?? Yes they be cray but their lying game is strong friend). I am not particularly invested in Kelsey and Zane as a pairing but I always appreciate good storytelling and writing, and revisiting the fact Zane told her he loved her in past tense was an example of both of these. In order for any kind of relationship between these two to progress believably this needed to be addressed and hearing Kelsey call Zane out on his shitty and manipulative behaviour was great, but even greater was seeing Kelsey drop her guard.
Opening up about being mad at herself too and that maybe if they were both more open about their feelings they wouldn’t have wasted so much time denying how they really felt; that she felt, no, feels, the same way, present tense; the resetting of the timer so she can finish what she was going to say instead of taking the option of backing out; the honest conversation…you know what all this is? Growth. Kelsey Lorraine Peters, I am just so damn proud of you because I am the first to admit that I was not sure this character could be redeemed for me after last season but here we are. The emotion for this whole scene, you could feel it and Zane’s, 'oh that timer was for food’ was fab, before he just casually drops in, ’ I love you, but stay out of my kitchen’. OK.  Smitten mode activated.
Meanwhile, Diana is no doubt enjoying Shelly’s disbelief that she and Liza are almost the same age about as much as a root canal and Lauren appears with a 'bowflex for your face’ to combat the 5 o'clock jowls. Side note: Lauren and Liza really need to have a convo asap because I definitely feel like Lauren is not ok with the lie since it’s been revealed. Scene of the ep goes to Charles walking into the trailer (with flowers for Liza *swoon*) while Diana is flapping that contraption, before he slowly backs away and I tell you, I was howling so hard I almost ruptured something. Liza’s hideous romper/scooter combo is just no on many levels, she clearly feels super unnatural and the photographer snapping Charles and Liza, who are not expecting to be photographed while her being made up to look so young obviously makes them look very far apart in age and a bit awks means that yes, the daddy/daughter dance vibe is strong, though that line made me vom in my mouth a little bit.
Between shoots our extremely excellent villain Quinn pays Liza a visit to show her support and her well-polling glasses. Her real talk that the good news about the publishing reaction to Liza’s lie is that 'eight blocks outside of midtown, nobody cares’, is what we were all thinking and is def to be filed under 'G’ for Gold. So naturally Quinn drags her into a completely self-serving NY1 interview (bless Liza for thinking they wanted to interview her) and I freaking love Quinn, she’s such a delicious character coz she’s awful and funny and pretty and a total smart ass. I stan.
Before we jump to the second part of the photo-shoot I have to say that the very obvious ploy to try and juxtapose Liza’s relationships with Charles and Josh felt like it was trying too hard and was mostly disappointing to me because it felt so forced. I want to be very clear that it has nothing to do with who I like Liza with romantically, it would have felt contrived regardless and was the only aspect of the episode that I felt could have been crafted with a little more nuance. Or maybe that was the point? Perhaps the obviousness was part of the humour of it *shrug emoji*
Either way, Liza is looking pretty exhausted when Josh turns up at the bar photo-shoot for reasons (whose name I am betting is Lauren Heller because there is no way he would just turn up and it is 100% in her wheelhouse to send him along after seeing the expressions on her face at the earlier shoot. I feel like this will def come out at some point and that really this whole shoot is serving to bring about stuff in future eps) and he doesn’t get to explain why he is there because he’s teasing Liza about being a model and I really do love their banter. Shelly has no idea what’s happening but she likes it and is thirsting pretty hard as she shakes his hand and I enjoyed hearing Liza talk about Josh as patient zero, her 'would you correct him?’ as she squeezed his cheeks made me smile. I know there have been a LOT of feelings about this scene expressed on social media, but I found the reminiscing, as Josh talked about how when he first met Liza he thought she was smart and sexy and he wanted to keep talking to her, really sweet (and quickly countered by his joking about being really drunk and it being dark).
I actually love this dynamic so much and if this show had moved these two properly into the friendzone I would be celebrating this as a pin-up example of how to show romantic-platonic relationship transition. I still may, because at this stage there is nothing to indicate that Liza is anything but committed to Charles and Josh gave no impression of pining for her IMO, but as an experienced TV connoisseur (aka obsessive tv show watcher) I am not naive enough to think that this interaction mightn’t be setting in motion a resurgence of the triangle. By the same token, I do not see any triangle in play at the moment and one thing this show does excel at is surprising us, so time will tell, but I am going to keep my faith in the writers to tell good, compelling stories that stay true to all the excellent characters and narratives they have in front of them, as they have done up until now.
While Liza’s colleagues aren’t going to throw her under a bus, Quinn is not only more than happy to, I’m pretty sure she’d drive the bus herself if it served her own self interest.  Quinn saying that she found out about Liza’s lie the week before in The New Yorker article, ooomph, did you feel that? It was the wind being knocked out of all of us, along with poor Liza, as Quinn counters Liza’s suggestion that she knew the truth before she invested on live TV. It was evident fairly quickly that Quinn was using the interview as a campaign platform and Liza’s expression as Quinn betrays her so publicly is yet another credit to Sutton Foster’s incredible talent.
My Kelsey love was brought home this week when she met Quinn following the NY1 interview. She is unrelenting in her backing of Liza and unwavering in her stance to Quinn when she is asks her to fire Liza. From the moment she arrives Kelsey is so kick ass, she sees every one of Quinn’s attempts to bully her into getting what she wants and Kelsey’s, 'please don’t minimise the strength I bring to this meeting’ was such a hell yes moment. There is something so satisfying about seeing Quinn in a position where she needs something from Kelsey and Kelsey standing so firm. Kelsey’s 'are we done here?’ before walking away was such a power move and the transition into her own office the next day, with Charles reassuring her that she did the right thing, was wonderful. Seeing these two as equals, talking business with a bit of a mentor/mentee dynamic is a dream. It was on my season 6 wish list and I can’t wait to see more of it.
It is upon discovering that Audrey Colbert’s manuscript delivery cheque bounced and that Diana just heard one of the Jennifer’s, the sloppy one from publicity (this line, I swear and also I need to meet her), say her direct deposit didn’t go through that we discover Quinn has thrown the ultimate tantrum and pulled her funding and Mercurennial is broke.
Poor Liza feels that it’s all her fault, I’m sure partly because of the way her colleagues turn and look at her when she walks in the office and partly because it is, but Charles continues to play the role of ultimate supportive partner as they stroll down the street after work, pointing out that Liza attracted Quinn to the company in the first place (and we ALL know it was not the company she was attracted to). I am simple folk and Charles saying he’s spoken for as he put his arm around her made me melt into a puddle and if anyone is feeling concerned about Liza’s level of besotted, watch this final scene as Charles reassures her that, 'you know what’s great about the worst thing happening? There’s no place to go but up. Only good things ahead’. I may have actually died from the sweetness of the entire thing and Liza does exactly what any self respecting person would in that situation and kisses him before they walk off hand in hand. To live happily ever after…jokes LOL I mean it’s television and it turns out Infinitely 21 has the most efficient marketing team on the planet because their campaign is launched and whattya know, it looks as though Liza and her ex will be plastered all over the city.
File under 'O’ for OF COURSE.
