Buzzing over the IFYLITA dinner scene
That dinner reveal scene was everything I wanted. It was Hamlet, it was Poirot, it was so perfectly pointed.
Not only did Jom make the point that these marriages should be called off in order to save the family reputation, but he also specifically highlighted how disgusting the behaviour of these men had been, and asked the question: how could you [Yai's father], be disgusted by our love but not by these actions? Who here is more vile, this talented performer or these people willing to kill for a little more power? Who is more embarrassing, this person flaunting gender binaries or you, bending over backwards and sacrificing your children's happiness for the good will of murderers?
God it was so satisfying, to have the queer-as-monster trope subverted in that way. Jom said: I'm not going to try to make you sympathize with our love so that you no longer see us as monsters, I'm going to make you look in a mirror and tell me who is more monstrous.
I still have chills. The way Nuey's laugh echoed as she moved through the scene, and the slow reveal that she was telling a true story, and her ability to ignore the tension in the room! What a fantastic performance by Om.
And the way this doesn't just rely on morals, but on the values that Yai's father ascribes to. He wants to be respected, to gain power for his family, and Jom reveals that actually, it is your decisions that will tear down your own family's reputation.
I also just really love that Eang Peung and Fong Kaew are friends, and worked together to make this happen. Jom got to do the reveal, but it was almost all their hard work to make it possible.
If Eang Peung dies from this pregnancy I will actually riot.

His Last Bow
Hey Tumblr,
Tumblr media Tumblr media
I have 0 idea what happens in this story. Kind of hoping it's a bit like Curtain, the last Poirot story, because that's a bop. Well, it's very depressing, but I love the solution. Although I also really hope it isn't, because then Agatha Christie would have copied that and I really don't want that to be the case.
I also really want ACD to have done something insanely over the top and decisive to make it really clear that this time there would be no retconning. Like... idk, the world being invaded by aliens. Sherlock Holmes stealing the crown jewels and being executed for treason. Mycroft turning out to have been a double agent all along and destroying the entire British Empire.
I'm no longer feverish, although my lungs are still trying to propel themselves out of my body in a way that keeps leaving me a little asphyxiated, so that's fun. But no jellyfishifters this time I expect. Or sea turtles... Yeah, Idk either.
It was nine o'clock at night upon the second of August—the most terrible August in the history of the world.
Oh Watson, you sweet summer child. I bet I've seen worse Augusts. Even if Holmes does die in this one.
The sun had long set, but one blood-red gash like an open wound lay low in the distant west.
London... is now... a hellmouth?
Tumblr media
Are we not in London? Is that the city from a distance. Where are we? Why is the sky split open? What is going on?
The two famous Germans stood beside the stone parapet of the garden walk...
The only two famous Germans. Ever. You know... those two.
Oh, so we're actually in the 'Sherlock is a spy' period. Weirdly I assumed that that was only going to be referenced. But no, we're actually going there.
Tumblr media
So the red line is... the war front?
One of these was his present companion, Baron Von Herling, the chief secretary of the legation, whose huge 100-horse-power Benz car was blocking the country lane as it waited to waft its owner back to London.
Is the Baron compensating for something? Maybe.
But we're not in London and we're not near the war front, so... what is that red slash in the sky. Is it London?
This is probably not the mystery I am meant to be trying to solve. I should pay more attention to the espionage and less to the environs.
“They are not very hard to deceive,” he remarked. “A more docile, simple folk could not be imagined.”
Someone has not been down the pub when the home team is playing. Hoo boy. Docile is not a word I would use...
Tumblr media
"One's first impression is that they are entirely soft. Then one comes suddenly upon something very hard, and you know that you have reached the limit and must adapt yourself to the fact."
That is, indeed, what she said.
“Meaning British prejudice in all its queer manifestations."
Oh boy. I don't think you mean what I'd mean by those words, but yet you have still brought upon me a great sense of national shame and wincing.
Tumblr media
"I was invited to a week-end gathering at the country house of a cabinet minister. The conversation was amazingly indiscreet.”
Given the general level of OpSec shown by government workers, bankers, and just... everyone within these stories, I cannot say that this surprises me. I'm disappointed, but not surprised. The majority of government people we have met have been entire and total imbeciles in the matter of privacy, data protection and general best practices regarding secrecy.
“No, no, don't call it a pose. A pose is an artificial thing. This is quite natural. I am a born sportsman. I enjoy it.”
Ugh, I hate this guy.
“And all the time this quiet country house of yours is the centre of half the mischief in England, and the sporting squire the most astute secret-service man in Europe. Genius, my dear Von Bork—genius!”
I will say, they're commenting on other people not being discreet, and here they are just laying out everything without even a hint of subtlety. Using people's names. confirming their identities, confirming their true purposes. Unless this, in itself, is a subterfuge... They're not at a party, at least, I suppose.
“You flatter me, Baron. But certainly I may claim my four years in this country have not been unproductive. I've never shown you my little store. Would you mind stepping in for a moment?”
This all feels very Cask of Amontillado, don't you think?
Is Van Bork Sherlock?
He then closed the door behind the bulky form which followed him and carefully adjusted the heavy curtain over the latticed window. Only when all these precautions had been taken and tested did he turn his sunburned aquiline face to his guest.
Oh. My. God. Did someone just use basic security protocols to prevent someone from listening or looking in on them? Be still my beating heart. I might faint.
Tumblr media
I am so confused about who is speaking right now. I need more dialogue tags. I have lost track. These two have merged into one very confused spy with multiple personalities. Or maybe just two heads. I don't know.
“Out of date and waste paper. The Admiralty in some way got the alarm and every code has been changed."
If that wasn't Sherlock or Mycroft, then I don't know who it was because every time the Admiralty has been in these stories they have been incompetent to the point of deliberate treason.
Will come without fail to-night and bring new sparking plugs. — —Altamont.
Is Altamont Holmes?
“You see he poses as a motor expert and I keep a full garage. In our code everything likely to come up is named after some spare part. If he talks of a radiator it is a battleship, of an oil pump a cruiser, and so on. Sparking plugs are naval signals.”
I take back that gif from earlier. Don't tell people the code words. Good grief, man! You've just compromised all of those phrases. I get that you're providing exposition for the audience, but still. STILL.
"I assure you that our most pan-Germanic Junker is a sucking dove in his feelings towards England as compared with a real bitter Irish-American.”
Fair.
...at a touch from the Baron's chauffeur the great car shivered and chuckled.
Is the car alive? I don't like this description.
Tumblr media
“Those are the lights of Harwich, I suppose,” said the secretary, pulling on his dust coat.
THANK YOU!
It's Harwich... No hellmouth, just Harwich. Mystery solved.
"The heavens, too, may not be quite so peaceful if all that the good Zeppelin promises us comes true."
Oh, you mean the bustle in the hedgerow? No... don't be alarmed about that. It's just a spring clean for the May Queen. Or if you're talking about the piper, he's just leading us to reason. It's really nothing to be worried about.
...beside it, seated at a table, was a dear old ruddy-faced woman in a country cap. She was bending over her knitting and stopping occasionally to stroke a large black cat upon a stool beside her. “That is Martha, the only servant I have left.” The secretary chuckled. “She might almost personify Britannia,” said he, “with her complete self-absorption and general air of comfortable somnolence."
Is Martha Holmes?
Honestly, that makes a lot of sense.
Or Holmes could be the kitty cat.
Tumblr media
It was a new experience to him, the silence and darkness of his widespread house, for his family and household had been a large one. It was a relief to him, however, to think that they were all in safety and that, but for that one old woman who had lingered in the kitchen, he had the whole place to himself.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
DANCE PARTY TIME
“You can give me the glad hand to-night, mister,” he cried. “I'm bringing home the bacon at last.”“The signals?”“Same as I said in my cable. Every last one of them, semaphore, lamp code, Marconi—a copy, mind you, not the original."
No. No. No.
This is not how you do a treasonous handover of government secrets. I don't care how empty you think the goddamned house is. You don't say the actual thing. YOU USE THE CODEWORDS. THIS IS WHY YOU HAVE CODES. YOU UTTER NUMPTIES!
Fuck you both. You're morons. What even is this? This isn't espionage. This is slapstick.
Good lord.
I... I despair.
I guess if you're this good at it, then it's no wonder that even the bloody Admiralty managed to get a clue.
Mycroft's probably been feeding you information for years, you muppets.
It's the incompetence that gets to me, it really is. If you're going to be moustache twirling evil German spies then at least have the self-respect and decency to be good at it.
This is pathetic.
Tumblr media
The Irish-American had entered the study and stretched his long limbs from the armchair. He was a tall, gaunt man of sixty, with clear-cut features and a small goatee beard which gave him a general resemblance to the caricatures of Uncle Sam. A half-smoked, sodden cigar hung from the corner of his mouth, and as he sat down he struck a match and relit it.
Oh yeah, this is Holmes, isn't it?
You couldn't even pretend to be good at being a traitor?
“So it's not quite as simple as you thought. It was four years ago that I had it made, and what do you think I chose for the word and figures?”
O

Tell me you're not about to do what I think you're about to do.
Please.
Tell me you have one braincell in your tiny head. PLEASE. You cannot be this dumb. YOU CANNOT BE!
“Well, I chose August for the word, and 1914 for the figures, and here we are.”
Tumblr media
And you're being dumb by trying to show off how smart you are. That's the worst kind.
“How could they have got on to Steiner?” he muttered. “That's the worst blow yet.”
You literally just told a man your safe combination. I don't know what to tell you, my dude. Maybe you're just bad at this.
Then he sat dazing for a moment in silent amazement at a small blue book which lay before him. Across the cover was printed in golden letters Practical Handbook of Bee Culture. Only for one instant did the master spy glare at this strangely irrelevant inscription. The next he was gripped at the back of his neck by a grasp of iron, and a chloroformed sponge was held in front of his writhing face.
Tumblr media
“Another glass, Watson!” said Mr. Sherlock Holmes as he extended the bottle of Imperial Tokay. The thickset chauffeur, who had seated himself by the table, pushed forward his glass with some eagerness.
Didn't call the chauffeur being Watson. Discounted him as Holmes for being too thickset. I guess since it's indicated Watson might have written this one I should have thought about Watson as well. Genuinely didn't think he'd be in this one, though.
"There is no one in the house except old Martha, who has played her part to admiration."
So Martha was working for Holmes this whole time. I think she wins the prize for being the best spy in the story.
"I shall no doubt reappear at Claridge's to-morrow as I was before this American stunt—I beg your pardon, Watson, my well of English seems to be permanently defiled—before this American job came my way.”
Oh no! Holmes used the word 'stunt' how scandalously unEnglish of him!
"The fact is, Watson, that this gentleman upon the sofa was a bit too good for our people."
Tumblr media
Guess the Admiralty is worse than even I gave them credit for.
The last remark was addressed to Von Bork himself, who after much gasping and blinking had lain quietly listening to Holmes's statement. He broke out now into a furious stream of German invective, his face convulsed with passion.
No... no... Holmes. You're not monologuing in front of the enemy prisoner. Don't do that. I believed in you.
"And yet I live and keep bees upon the South Downs.”
...don't tell him where you live...
I give up.
Tumblr media
“And most of that information came through you,” he cried. “What is it worth? What have I done? It is my ruin forever!” “It is certainly a little untrustworthy,” said Holmes. “It will require some checking and you have little time to check it. Your admiral may find the new guns rather larger than he expects, and the cruisers perhaps a trifle faster.”
god fucking dammit
Why are you telling him about the misinformation? The misinformation is meant to misinform. That's why it's called misinformation. You're undoing half of the work you did.
I... guys... guys, I just can't.
“My dear sir, if you did anything so foolish you would probably enlarge the two limited titles of our village inns by giving us ‘The Dangling Prussian’ as a signpost. The Englishman is a patient creature, but at present his temper is a little inflamed, and it would be as well not to try him too far."
Did he just threaten Van Bork with hanging. By referencing a possible pub name? A+ threat, but yikes.
The two friends chatted in intimate converse for a few minutes, recalling once again the days of the past, while their prisoner vainly wriggled to undo the bonds that held him.
They just... they just left him alone.
And went and had a chat.
I don't even know why I thought they'd drive him away immediately. Why would they?
Tumblr media
"I have a check for five hundred pounds which should be cashed early, for the drawer is quite capable of stopping it if he can.”
Such a weird line to end this on. OK then Holmes. Go cash your cheque.
And that was the last of the short stories... It didn't quite have the same poignancy as Curtain. But it certainly gave me a lot to talk about.
This has been a really fun year and I've loved writing these up - and spending far too long finding gifs and sometimes making my own memes when I couldn't find the precise thing I needed to say.
If you've read all of these, I have no idea why, but Hi! 2023 was certainly a year, wasn't it? Thanks to all of you. It's been really fun reading comments and learning things when people added to the notes to answer questions I'd asked.
I hear we're doing the novels next year. I have definitely actually read all of those. But I do get them all mixed up, and I will have forgotten a lot of them. I think I also signed up for another substack, but right now I can't even remember which one. That'll be a fun surprise.
Hope you all had a good, or at least not terrible, 2023. And I hope we all have a better 2024.
Happy (almost) New Year!

Hello, can I ask what do you mean "in canon it's impossible for Sherlock to settle down with a woman"? Like, as a fan of Holmes and always read the books since middle school, I'm kinda confuse here, I don't mean anything negative. Sorry, do you think Poirot (from Agatha Christie) is also queer?
Maybe because I grew up with very religious mother and lived in anti-LGBTQ country, I'm kinda slow in picking up subtext. Like until now I'm still kinda confuse with my friend who have ships from any fandoms (but I still love to hear and read her headcanons or fics about those characters)....
I really agree with you, I've seen many Holmes' adaptations (cartoon, tv series, manga) but Yuumori is clearly the closest to Doyle's works. Do you think the mangaka also love to read Holmes' books?
Story time! (Welcome to "Hyper answers asks like an old lady going on an hour long barely-on-topic tangent at the slightest prompting.)
I totally get where you're coming from, I was raised in like...knockoff Southern Baptist churches. Growing up, homosexuality was presented to me as a sexual perversion incapable of involving real love. It's kind of silly, but it's true: a ship was a big part of changing that for me. I read Tsubasa Reservoir Chronicle as a teenager, and Kurogane and Fai had something that was inescapably romantic and beautiful but never strictly sexual (tho the potential is certainly there). Between that and an online community of LGBTQ+ adults who were incredibly patient and kind towards me even when I was suuuuper ignorant, I started to open up towards queer relationships as...well, just relationships. Relationships that can encompass sex and also encompass love and friendship and communication and partnership and all those other things I'd been taught were exclusive to monogamous straight people. And then, even as terrified as I was, I was eventually able to face the fact that I'd always had crushes on girls just as often as crushes on guys. So yeah, there's a reason Kurofai is my ship of all ships, the actual One True Pairing for me. Because it cracked open a door just enough that I could slowly lever it open the rest of the way. There seem to be quite a lot of anecdotes like this: women enjoying BL/mlm ships is often seen as fetishy (which can certainly be part of it) but for some reason I can't fully articulate it also seems to sometimes be a means for girls and women to explore their own not-straightness.
ANYWAY. SHERLOCK HOLMES. Tbh I'm not gonna go too in-depth because I would bet good money that there are a bunch of scholarly articles on Holmes' queerness. People have probably done their doctorate theses on this! Much smarter and more well-read folks than I have already covered the topic. For me, it really boils down to: he never outright expresses sexual or romantic interest in anyone (we must resist the urge to assume his respect for Irene Adler is romantic just because he is a man and she is a woman). He's almost certainly on the asexual spectrum. But when he does exhibit symptoms one might associate with romantic and/or sexual interest (particularly romantic, imo), it's always towards men (usually Watson, of course). For example, notable flirt John Watson saying that Holmes blushes at his compliments the way a girl does is...suggestive.
The whole thing is complicated by Watson being (in my opinion at least) an unreliable and sometimes downright petty narrator. He keeps going on spiels about Holmes being cold and heartless, only to turn around and describe him greeting his friends warmly and being emotionally moved by music and baby-talking puppies and charming old ladies. It makes Watson sometimes come across as one of those allo people who are so unable to conceive of a life without romantic and/or sexual desire that they start dehumanizing those who don't experience it. Alternatively and maybe more charitably, he just has a big ol' crush on Holmes, is understandably alarmed by it given the time period, and gets bitchy and defensive when he feels it might not be reciprocated.
But ultimately...do I think Arthur Conan Doyle sat down at a desk in the late 19th century/early 20th century and was like "I am going to write some ace queer representation for the tumblr girlies (gn)"? Obviously not. 😅 I do think he might have set out to create a character who very deliberately did not need to have the otherwise almost obligatory straight romantic side-plot. Holmes is never in any way set up as having a life headed towards marriage and children, in spite of how typical that was for the time. The companionship he does express a need and desire for comes in the form of another man. He's "lost without [his] Boswell." He sneakily buys Watson's practice out from under him so he'll be free to move back in and go on more adventures with him. He threatens violence when Watson is hurt. Etc etc. I think it's very fair to interpret it all through a queer lens, the quibble would be more in whether that queerness ever manifests sexually.
I definitely think the Yuumori creators have not only read ACD but also other fiction based on the stories, possibly even including some very old pastiches like this one. I love how seemingly nerdy they are about it haha! The series is full of easter eggs and callouts to other Holmesian works.
As for Poirot, I know very little about the character beyond a few episodes of the show I watched as a young'un, but that is not the mustache of a straight man (I'm joking I'm joking I have absolutely no opinion on that one! 🤣)
Thanks for the ask, and for actually reading this ramble if you got this far! 😅

Hello! Welcome. Have a look around. I encourage horniness on main, don't be shy!
I am a librarian by day, and am currently dipping into freelance work doing a variety of things - editing, beta reading, research, writing, general bookishness. My DMs/ask box are open, or you can email me at [email protected]. Check out my ko-fi, my most important blog post of all time about how to buy books anywhere other than amazon, or my affiliate page on bookshop.
If I reblog ask memes, I promise I always want your ask!
More about my blog under the cut
Common tags for things I post and reblog a lot about, for you to either dive into or block:
Kuroshitsuji Grell sutcliff Nsfw Nsfw text Ecology Plants Books Writing Gpoy My writing My fic Libraries witchcraft history of medicine history
Spouse tag (I'm married to @/rain-shoshana who is an artist and author, so you'll probably see me reblogging a ton of their stuff. if you like Poirot or Sherlock Holmes fanfic, mushrooms, or historical costume illustration, their stuff is for you!)
Gremlin register (@/lululeighsworld and I are frequent collaborators and always screaming in each others' mentions so the variety of posts here is wide)
Monoc (a current original fiction project, full working title is Monoculture. It's a historical fantasy, set in the 1880s in Germany and England, about queer witches, the dangers of colonial imperialism, and working in true harmony with the land)
Potf (other original fiction project, less developed, short for working title People of the Forest, about three truly terrible queer assholes who are coworkers and also toxic codependent lovers. Some as-yet undetermined theme of community and decentralized power. Very horny. It's a mess)
Catholicism (this one is very personal to me, and mileage will vary for you, but rest assured I believe that Catholicism has always had room for a lot more queerness and variety of devotion and/or interpersonal love than modern american practice and communities would have you believe. I also fully believe in the literal practice of communalism that the early church embodied, and I think for a true vision of catholic social justice to be achieved, capitalism must be abolished. you'll find a lot of hagiography and death in this tag as well)

1, 8 and 45 for the book asks please 📚
hello! (book asks here if u like)
Name the best book you've read so far this year.
probably the hilma af klint biography! it's just incredibly well-researched and a great example of how to write about a subject for whom you have copious information but only about very specific parts of their life (in af klint's case, relating to her art and relationships with spirits, but nothing else). it's also so respectful of her sexuality. i feel like a lot of newer biographies of queer people from history spend too much time trying to pigeonhole their subject into a recognizable modern label which would have meant nothing to the person or that they chose not to use (looking at you mark dery, author of the edward gorey biography), and this one does not do that, but it doesn't ignore that part of her life either. good book.
8. Favorite queer fiction book(s).
once again i am so very bad at favourites. right now i'll say it's becky chambers' monk & robot series. it's about a queer character, but so much of chambers' fiction strikes me as being distinctly queer in the way she imagines the world and chooses to depict the future. and they're wonderful.
45. What book(s) would you sell your soul to get a TV or movie adaptation of?
most things i would sell my soul to NEVER see film adaptations of lol. but i would love to see a rivers of london series done well. i would love to see golden age mystery writers other than agatha christie adapted for the screen. give me a series based on josephine tey's alan grant, but he has to be gay. since kenny b has proven that people will go to the movies to see his atrocious poirots, make films of georgette heyer's country house mysteries instead. they're full of rich people being awful to each other, viewers LOVE that

Alright, I have a challenge for y’all
Choose one queer character/ship (canon or head canon) to be your parents and one queer character/ship (canon or head canon) to be your children.
Because what’s more queer culture than spontaneously claiming you have adopted or been adopted by your favorite characters/ships???
I’ll go first,
I have to say, Poirot x Hastings are my parents, and Nick and Charlie are my children!!!
(Alternatively Ronance are my parents and Byler are my children, dang why did I make my own challenge so hard to choose!)
I have so many other characters I claim, but tag me with your choices, I would love to see them!!!!

Weekly Update
Hello, I slept in but I also went on a wee little hike which apparently means I’m now ready for bed at, uh, 5pm. Love weekends!!! (But also I ran SEVERAL errands yesterday and have done a lot on various projects I’ve been working on, and it’s just been absolutely lovely all ‘round. I spent this time last year being so horrifically burned out, it’s still a pleasure to want to Do Things. I think tonight I will either work on sewing a pinafore dress, or oh, I should start knitting a baby sweater, actually, that might win out.)
Also also, walks delightfully loosen up my lower back and hips, so I am excited for pain-free sleep tonight, blissssss
Writing
I thought about this on my walk today, and I’m so much happier and feel under so much less pressure to write, I’m going to retire this section permanently. Well -- maybe I’ll bring it back someday? But not for months yet, I suspect, if ever. It’s simply so much better for my mental health to feel free to write, or not, as I like.
(I’m going to keep doing these updates because they’re kind of a nice record of tiny slice of life that don’t make it into my actual journal, plus tracking what I read. They’ll still be tagged ‘weekly update’ if you want to mute that tag.
Reading
Loads! I am taking a break from long, heavy, nonfiction to read lots of lovely shorter things. This week I finished:
Anne: An Adaptation of Anne of Green Gables (Sort Of) by Kathleen Gros. THIS WAS SO F’IN CUTE. My love of middle-grade books in preference to YA continues unabated, I ADORED this. It’s sweet and queer and lovely and everything’s been updated perfectly. Also the romantic denoument is very My Brand, and I was delighted.
The Mysterious Affair at Styles by Agatha Christie. I got on a bit of a Christie run, and I hadn’t read a Poirot book before. I am delighted, this book is delightful, and very twisty and a nice, quick read.
The Pine Barrens by John McPhee. I’d only read some of McPhee’s shorter stories in The New Yorker, and this was exquisite. For various reasons, despite growing up basically next to the Pine Barrens, I’ve not really been there and this was just...amazing. What an extraordinary place, and McPhee is so, so good, I loved this book, cannot recommend it enough.

Name: I go by Lavanya(he/she/they) in the football fandom because why not? Also because she's one of my favourite fictional characters moulded by the one and only Rabindranath Tagore, the love of my life.
Birthday: 28th of May!
Zodiac sign: gemini according to western astrology and leo according to Hindu astrology, but I am way too ignorant about astrology to understand what either of those mean for me.
Hobbies: wayy too many holy shit, can you tell I'm neurodivergent? I LOVE MUSIC, so... it's not a hobby it's worship for me, and I don't care if it sounds corny. I was pursuing fashion as a career but now I've switched my majors so I guess it's a hobby? And writing is a hobby which I want to transform into a career going ahead. Nail art is a proper hobby though. It just exists and I do it and I enjoy it thoroughly. Picking out gay subtext from every piece of literature I ever– *gets shot*
Favourite colour: Blue and pink on the main, but I find anything softly vibrant to be visually appealing.
Favourite book: Sherlock Holmes. Everything of Sherlock. Everything of Poirot except 'Curtain' because spoiler alert he dies and he's not allowed to do that. I'm quite into Greek myth though a lot of that shit is messed up, but so am I. Recently read the second book of 'Aristotle and Dante' series, those two books SLAY SO SO HARD.
Last song I listened to: 'Still Alive' by Demi Lovato, it just came out and it's a punk rock masterpiece. Demetria🤌✨️
Last movie I watched: 'Is love enough? Sir' directed by Rohena Gera. It's in hindi and the artistry in the film it top notch. An excellent commentary on societal class divide, privilege, dreams, hopes, love and the complications that arise when all these intersect.
Something that helps people: Some wisdom I gathered from recent personal experience– acknowledge the negative impact of other people's actions on your life, and do not be afraid to take steps accordingly. Doesn't matter if the person did it completely unintentionally, doesn't matter if everybody around you says that they're "an angel" and they would "never do that to anyone" even though they did it to you, doesn't matter if even you genuinely believe that they're a good person and they didn't mean it. It still happened. And it affected you negatively. People can be the best people ever and still act in a shitty way on occasion because we are humans, but it doesn't mean we shouldn't be held accountable. So don't be afraid to admit it to yourself, or call it out, don't feel compelled to accept their apology, especially if their behavior doesn't change going forward, and don't shy away from drawing boundaries. You may lose friends in the process, people may attack you to defend them and it may hurt a whole lot, but, you owe it to yourself to not put up with bullshit, including unintended bullshit.
Meaning behind my url: I used to be a passionate science gay bb as a middle schooler lol. Had to let go of that part of me because of some traumatic experiences which are ☠️☠️ better not talked about but... I've always thought of the dispersion of light by prism experiment as a symbol of queer liberation for obvious reasons. That's where the url is from :)).
Tagging: @neyxmessi @ispeakmorelanguagesthanyou @dykes4neymar @emmacarsword @krocodilf if y'all haven't already done this, I'd love to get to know you but nothing compulsory. And anybody else seeing this, you're tagged!

📚 STUFF I READ 📚
😍 Fete For A King (Shivadhverse #1) (Sam Starbuck) - cannot express how much I love this entire universe!!!! This book started as a 'what if there was a hallmark movie where a guy-fieri-like celebrity chef fell for the crown-prince-soon-to-be-king?' - it's sweet and fucking hilarious and very low angst and all the characters are amazing
😍 Infinite Jes (Shivadhverse #2) (Sam Starbuck) - 2nd book in the same universe; a recently retired ex-king at loose ends decides to start a podcast and ends up acquiring more loved ones in the form of a nonbinary producer and their 15-yr-old apprentice/son/disaster magnet
😍 👂‍ The Perfect Crimes of Marian Hayes (The Queer Principles of Kit Webb #2) (Cat Sebastian, author; Joel Leslie, narrator) - fuck, I knew I was going to fucking love Marian Hayes and I wasn't disappointed; give me a prickly, angry romance heroine every day and someone who loves her because their jagged edges fit together
😍 Ain't No Grave (Can Keep My Body Down) (spitandvinegar) - reread, absolute five-star forever fave; always enamoured of the idea that a broken, junkie recovering-from-hydra former asset would find enough of bucky barnes left to adopt two queer homeless kids; all the characterizations in this are incredible
😊 👂‍ Death in the Clouds (Hercule Poirot #13) (Agatha Christie, author; Hugh Fraser, narrator)
😊 Sweet Berries (Cambric Creek #2) (C.M. Nascosta) - mothman monsterfucking romance, very enjoyable
😊 👂‍ Enter the Saint (Simon Templar 'The Saint' #3) (Leslie Charteris, author; John Telfer, narrator) - surprisingly fun action adventure story; what little I knew of The Saint was from the solo hero he would later develop into - I enjoyed this early stuff where he's the leader of a vigilante gang of Bright Young Things
🙂 Dear Mona Lisa… (Claire Davis & Al Stewart) - short novella about a middle-aged synesthete trying to find the right way to come out to his daughter before his impending wedding
💖💖 +311K of shorter fic so shout out to these I really loved 💖💖
Me and the Lavender Moon (emchant3d) - MCU: shrunkyclunks, 10K - another fantastic part of this series about nonbinary kitchen witch bucky & cap!Steve - really love this entire series so much

Watch List | September ‘22
Watch list tag game :) Tagged by @25shadesoffebruary and @dragonsareawesome123
Currently Watching (Binging)
Checkmate I love Agatha Christie and I am loving how they are adapting her stories so far! I find Poirot a bit irritating (I’m more of a Miss Marple fan) so I have been greatly loving Si Tu Yan especially in the Poirot parts - he is a huge improvement. I am not very familiar with the Republic Era of China so it is giving me lots of things to research later.
Currently Watching (Airing)
About Youth which is so good! The characters are so soft and layered and have very different conflicts, and I am loving watching them support each other
The Eclipse also phenomenal! I love how aggressively P’Golf and the scriptwriters are being with their political/social commentary, and both First and Khao are such fantastic actors. Every time Khao cries a piece of my heart dies forever
180 Degree Longitude Passes Through Us this is shaping up to be one of my favourites of the year, it has a very moody-queer-film vibe with highly complex characters and relationships
Takara-kun to Amagi-kun I am warming up to this one, I was pleasantly surprised with the very frank discussion of readiness for sex, sexual boundaries, and how much care Takara-kun is showing in his understanding of consent. I really value seeing these kinds of open and honest discussions becoming more commonplace in media for teenagers, it reminds me of a similar storyline that recently ran in the Heartstopper comic.
Girlfriend Project Day 1 (I know it’s technically not airing but it only ended this week so I am keeping it in this column because I haven’t completely finished the last ep) I am enjoying it a lot, they did an absolutely fantastic kiss scene which I wasn’t expecting, so that was nice. It’s retreading the same ground as Love Class, and I wish it had the same run time as that series so I could compare and contrast the 2 series better, but alas. The curse of painfully short GLs.
My Only 12% Cake is the best character of all time, he is such a kind and caring friend. I am scared the whole time watching this show because I am waiting for it to trample my heart because Wabi Sabi.
Vice Versa I am a bit behind on this and having been watching through gifs for the last couple of eps tbh. I am having trouble letting go of my expectation of a more sci-fi based show featuring lots of archery. If I can manage to do that I think there is lots to enjoy for what the show is, my expectations were just simultaneously drastically different and extremely high.
Still airing but on hold: Coffee Melody, War of Y and On Cloud 9
Not BL, but I am going to start the new Bee & Puppycat today, which I am very excited for
Rewatching:
Bad Buddy with my cousin
Looking forward to:
Never Let Me Go this is one of my most anticipated shows of the year, I love mafia settings and I am hoping for lots of angst, drama and betrayal
Wish You Luck the trailer was amazing! I am chomping at the bit for next summer, I am loving the greater variety of genres we are getting and Tonnam was fantastic in Triage
Nighttime in the Suburb I have some anxiety as always about how the asexual character will be handled, but I also tend to trust the Philippines on handling more unusual queer storylines so
The Uncanny Counter S2 give them back to me!!!!!
Home School I need it now! Very The Eclipse/The Gifted vibes. Also Chimon!!!
Art Adore En I was sold as soon as I saw a polycule in the trailer, it looks like exactly my kind of messy
GAP may this kick off a new trend where the sapphics stay winning. I also adore FreenBecky
Chains of Heart the synopsis looks great! Very pulpy and dramatic!
Moonlight Chicken P’Aof and EarthMix are some of my favourites, and I am curious where they go with a very different storyline than they have done before
Summerdaze I loved the mock trailer for this, I really hope there is news soon. I want them to open another crowfunding campaign because I missed the first le sigh
I am also impatiently waiting for an adaptation of Transplant to be announced, Sammon adaptations are always great and I just really need TanBunn back
Tagging: anyone who would like to do it, and feel free to say I tagged you so I can see your answers! :)

Yes exactly. I also think it’s interesting that rather than wanting to be the proactive complex character, they would rather be a passive simplified version of that character? I relate to characters like aziraphale who prefers calm and slow pace so if I want to see aspects of myself somewhat reflected I do go to these characters as I’m more similar to them, or the male writer self insert nerd characters too, but fiction is also for escapism and imagining yourself as something else and so why would I take the power fantasy characters and turn them into another type of character to be more similar to myself? I don’t always want to be me and I don’t need characters to have similar traits as me for me to relate to them and want to be them. Often I like to imagine myself as characters more cool, more confident, more competent etc than myself, then the power fantasy is also aspirational to me. I even like to imagine myself as cool and tragic villains, not because I agree with the villain but because it’s just, you know, it’s just escapism to imagine yourself as someone more powerful or interesting.
In the case of crowley, I am not sure why the fandom has “feminised” him so much. It might be because they want him to be more like a typical representation of a demon who’s more androgynous and seductive because they’re attracted to him? Or want to be that kind of character (especially considering the gender fandoms obsessions with making gay characters’ sexualities fluid, aziraphale being gay).
Anyway, I think in general the baby girlfication of male power fantasies and other heroic powerful and competent etc type of characters might also be a result of this generation using representation and diversity in fiction as a criteria for whether the story is good or “unproblematic”, and the seeming inability or unwillingness to read about people different than yourself (ironic when you want diversity. It’s almost like some just want diversity so every story has a character with a similar identity as themselves that they can then project on?). Like how similar a character is to yourself is used as a criteria for whether the story is good or worth reading.
YOU ARE SO SMART
And so right. The diversity they ask for is usually within a group they fit in so they can project on more easily. The inability to identify with people unlike themselves force them to conform every character to their demographic in their fanon - suddenly the white straight able man is a brown "queer" autistic fat anxious nb with vitiligo . I do not need a character to be like me to love them or recognize good writing. I enjoy knowing people unlike myself (AZ & Crowley & Dean & Poirot & Columbo& Chloe & Nadine (uncharted btw) & Ellie (last of us) & Xena & Gabs), and getting to see their experiences in a way only film/video games can do. While I don't want every character to be a straight white man, I don't want every character to be like me. I have read YA and New Adult books with anxiety ridden "queer" millennials/gen Z that never do anything worthwhile and waste their time obsessing over identity, I hate those characters. I don't want to change every character into that....it's not diversity it's a new homogeneity. Turn on the latest procedural, and 40 yr old characters are talking in woke speak like their 19 yr olds on twitter. It's exhausting. But I am talking about a series of problems right now. Thank you for taking time out to rant with me. You are way more eloquent.

so I was trying to do these monthly but it turns out that months are. really short? poor design. anyway, here’s a list of podcasts I enjoyed in 2021. you might enjoy them too. maybe try them and see.
- Back to Earth - non-fiction - Definitely Human’s Charlie May (Abstinence in Pax Fortuna!, Joy in The Infinite Bad) leaves London to return to her childhood home in Devon to work on the farm where she grew up. The show is an interesting and engaging look at farming and so far has had multiple very good dogs in it. I particularly enjoy hearing from the chickens.
- Believer - paranormal fiction - Lara is a fake medium, and her ex has gone missing. Lara and fantastic good dog SodaPop investigate, but are not hugely welcome (Lara, not SodaPop, SodaPop is a good boy), and encounter some significant spook. SodaPop does get his own POV story in which he continues to be as good as we already knew him to be. There’s also a plot, which is very hook-y, and I am suffering having gone from binge to release schedule.
- Gather the Suspects - mystery, post-apocalyptic - Jack, who has seen every episode of Poirot, along with his friends Kara and Geraint, investigates the murder of another resident in their flat complex. I love a murder mystery, and I love hearing Welsh accents in podcasts, so this was a treat - it’s also well-paced and works excellently on audio. It also now has a Halloween special that has a dog in it, and, you may have noticed from other entries, but dogs are Yes.
- Hello from the Hallowoods - horror - queer stories from the forest at the end of the world, narrated by local monster Nikignik. A very interesting world, with compelling characters - my particular favourites being Percy and Diggory, which I understand is common, but look, they were so soft in that lake. Also I love the cover art. Fella’s just on there like hey.
- Hello Humans - anthology, comedy - a selection of single episodes of podcasts-that-could be, including a glimpse into the dangerous world of the trawlermen, and the former racehorses trying to retrain for a changing world. It’s Definitely Human, production values are excellent and it’s very fun to listen to, give it a go.
- Inexplicables - urban fantasy - in the aftermath of their mother’s death, Meredith and Harold Stonewell return home for the funeral, and become involved with the ICS, their mother’s business - which involves working with supernatural creatures. Currently only available via the Rusty Quill patreon. Difficult subjects and situations in places but well worth the listen, the character development is wonderful to hear and I enjoy spotting the RQ crew cameos in the background.
- Kane & Feels - horror??? - Kane and Feels are private investigators, who take on supernatural cases. Kane knows what’s happening to some degree, and Feels punches it. I don’t know what’s happening in Kane & Feels and neither does anyone I’ve asked. It’s fine. Listen to Kane & Feels.
- Someone Dies in this Elevator - anthology - various settings, various characters, but someone always dies in an elevator. Every episode feels inventive and fresh despite the repeating premise, and it’s well-made in all aspects. I had no idea there were so many ways to die in lifts, and am secure in my decision to usually take the stairs. Bloody lifts.
- The Beacon - urban fantasy - college student Bee has discovered she has magic fire powers, and is making a podcast in the hope that it will help her find others like her. Everyone in this story is an asshole in their own way, but in understandable ways, not in grimdark ways, especially as they’re all college kids, and I very much enjoyed the listen.
- The Cellar Letters - horror - Nate, closely followed by his buddy Steve, moves to Maine and starts to record a podcast about it. Their rent is weirdly low and their basement has a bunch of creepy letters in it. They fuck around and (largely don’t) find out. I listened to 28 episodes of this (until I caught up) in less than 36 hours, which also included work and sleep, because the episodes were short and good and my brain went a bit funny. I was expecting something very much echoing TMA, but while there are influences, this one kind of wanders off on its own and gets its head kicked in for its trouble. There’s also a very good dog in it who thus far is fine, hopefully she stays that way. The non-dog characters are fine, I guess (I love them), plot is Happening, there are only four fics in the AO3 tag, please help.
- The Diary of Aliza Schultz - I don’t know what this is, really - A spin-off from woe.begone, The Diary of Aliza Schultz follows the titular character as she reviews every novel by airport novelist Rafael Muslani and also befriends his cat, Lucy, who is the largest (domestic) cat in the world. Does not require any familiarity with woe.begone, and is a very nice listen.
- The McIlwraith Statements - urban fantasy/horror - Sarah McIlwraith, recounts her experiences participating as a PhD student in an academic study, charged with proving the existence of the supernatural or lack thereof. Sarah sees ghosts. I found it an interesting premise, and it didn’t disappoint. Highly binge-worthy, as I went through the whole thing doing some video editing and barely swore at my laptop at all.
- The Secret of St Kilda - supernatural thriller - Lockie has come to St Kilda to start a new life, which, (un??)fortunately, begins with a knife. There might be a little bit of just a hint of a cult. Somewhere, there may be a cat. I don’t think we met the cat yet. Anyway, I’ve had TSoSK for approx forty minutes and already it takes up approximately 60% of my available brain space. So far it’s excellently acted, well-produced and soundscaped, and the writing is Yes. I can’t wait to see where it goes.
- The Storage Papers - horror - Jeremy is Just Some Guy, who finds a whole bunch of creepy files in a purchased storage locker and starts a podcast about them, as one does. The show initially appears as an anthology, and then develops an overarching plot. This was a show I picked up at the end of 2020, and was excited to see it turn up on the RQ Network. I particularly enjoy the more stand-alone creepypasta style stories.
- The Tower - pretty! - Kiri decides to leave her life behind and climb a mysterious tower. As she ascends, she finds phones, and contacts the people she leaves behind. The Tower is beautifully written, and accompanied by beautiful music - for me it was a very peaceful, reflective listen, especially the episodes I listened to with a purring cat on my lap (he seemed to enjoy it too).
- The Wanderer - fantasy, fairy-tale - a bard travels the forest, and hopes that he might find his lover. Very dreamlike sort of writing, with some very nice music too. A nice one to fall asleep to, which is maybe why I don’t recollect very much of the plot.
- To Chart a Well-Trod Course - sci-fi - AI LAVINI is taking her ship on their first solo journey across the solar system. Unfortunately, she’s been assigned to Dr Winstead, a generally objectionable man with a difficult history with AIs. I was given a little promo card thing (I bloody love a leaflet) for this at the London Podcast Festival by some very lovely people. Their show is real good and you should listen. It’s quiet, character-driven, and excellently done.
- We Fix Space Junk - sci-fi - wealthy heiress turned fugitive Samantha Trapp becomes indebted to terrifying future corporation Automnicon, and must work off her debt as a repairman, along with the more experienced Kilner and their ship AI, DAX. Every world visited feels interesting and distinct, the overarching plots are well-placed, I think it’s a classic and if it isn’t it should be? Also I have a colouring book. It’s great.
Regarding previously mentioned shows:
- Down made a triumphant return from covid purgatory and completed its season. I am still suffering.
- Enthusigasm, RQ’s talk show for people to enjoy things, now has a season on public release! It has free joy!
- Neighbourly completed its first season, and the whole thing was as good as anticipated from the first few episodes.
- Red Valley came back for S2 and broke my heart into tiny bits again. I don’t know what to tell you. Listen to Red Valley.
- Shadows at the Door - it’s put out more things which are good and you should listen to, there’s a drunk ghost story and an M R James story and also I’m still having feelings about Troughton. Just so you know.
- The Night Post has just finished up its most recent season, and it did acquire a horse, which meant horse noises, which were great. Also there’s plot happening.
As ever, feel free to send me recs, I love stories, particularly in audio mediums. May there be many more next year.

langblr introduction!
hi!! i’ve been around tumblr for a while now and since i love languages and love to learn them, i decided to create an langblr blog!
i’m looking or mutuals so feel free to follow me!! i’m planning on following everyone back <3
info about me:
call me milo
i go by she/her
i’m 19, latina and queer
brazilian portuguese is my native language
i’m going to college for graphic design this year!
languages:
i’m fluent in portuguese
advanced (maybe fluent?) in english
currently a beginner in french and spanish
the next languages i hope to focus on are: italian, sign language (libras and/or asl), russian and welsh.
interests and hobbies:
languages! ((if it’s not obvious enough ahhaha
i LOVE history and literature. literally my favorite subjects in school. i’m specially interested in the more human part of history, learning about the way people lived thousand of years ago is always fascinating.
kinda tied to the last topic but i’m a huge mythology geek. greek (yes, i read percy jackson in middle school how did you know? lmao), roman and egyptian are my favorite ones but i find all of them really interesting
books! i read mostly everything but i’ve been really into philosophy ones lately! i read “nausea” by sartre in the beginning of this year and.. wow. also love murder mysteries! i actually finished reading “murder on the orient express” today, so good! poirot my beloved xx
art. i feel like i’m tackling only the big ones lol but i do enjoy art a lot, history of art was also one of my favorite subjects. i’m also a graphic designer (hate doing logos, not in that part of it) so love doing collages, making music posters and artists inspired art!
music. i love music with all my heart. i’m also very eclectic about it so i hear a bit of everything. have bits of obsessions with certain artist or genres once in a while so i’m sorry if i don’t shut up about it lol i miraculously don’t have one right now! i’m kinda revisiting my old ones so that includes 60′s/70′s rock, taylor swift, the black parade by mcr and mostly classic 2014-fishnets-and-black-little-skirts indie. i’m also really into songwriting (even though i don’t sing) and want to work in the music industry in the future!
sewing and crocheting. i’m actually working in a sweater right now!
building/making/creating/fixing stuff lmao i love giving things a fix or building something from zero. right now i’m really into bookbinding
and that’s that! i also love to make friends so if you’re up to talk, send me a message <33 i would love to have a study buddy or, if you’re learning brazilian portuguese, would love to help!
