Boutonnière Ideas for Any Wedding Style
Tumblr media
Just about any bloom will work for the wedding boutonnière, but why stick with predictable picks? Luckily, there's no shortage of ideas. But how do you pick the perfect wedding boutonnière that will earn your seal of approval and still feel like a cohesive part of your floral design?
Start with the color: White, green, and yellow are all popular shades. Another great way to balance out a boutonnière is with the addition of bold greenery. Fresh herbs, leafy greens, or a modern succulent are all great additions to softer-hued flowers. Or go with one large succulent, a cluster of greens or berries, or a barely there off-white cluster of nontraditional wedding flowers—we like perennial astilbe or clematis—for a look that expresses a more modern style.
In an effort to help you select the perfect boutonnière, we rounded up some great ideas that you're sure to love.
Rosebuds and Bunny Tails
Tumblr media
Red and white rosebuds totally pop against this gray, acutely patterned suit jacket without clashing with that funky purple pocket square. We love how the addition of feathery dried grasses and fluffy bunny tails completely refreshes this otherwise traditional rose boutonnière.
Blue Grape Hyacinths
Tumblr media
There's nothing more evocative of a brilliant summer day than this cluster of blue grape hyacinths wrapped in a natural, bleached burlap. Best of all? The flowers were picked up from the local flower market the day before this intimate waterfront wedding.
Dried Grasses and Chrysanthemum
Tumblr media
Now, this is posh with an organic boho twist. The oh-so sophisticated formal tux gets a brush of nature with a boutonnière of bleached, dried grasses and chrysanthemums. We can't help but drool over the color palette.
Flag Pins and a Single Rose
Tumblr media
Let your flags fly and wear your national pride on your, er, lapel on your wedding day. This white rose boutonnière is crowned with an American and Canadian flag pin representing the newlyweds' separate nationalities coming together.
Scabiosa and Rosemary
Tumblr media
These playful bundles present an unexpected composition. Lollipop scabiosa and fragrant rosemary come together in the most elegant way.
Green Hellebores and Privet Berries
Tumblr media
These boutonnières of muted green hellebores, reddened foliage, and tiny privet berries encapsulate all the romance of an autumnal wedding. We love that each tiny posy keeps with the uniformity of the bunch but takes on a unique look all its own.
A Garden Rose With Tuberose and Delphinium
Tumblr media
Now here's a romantic boutonnière. A rust-hued garden rose is framed by pale pink and cream tuberose and delphinium for a color palette that harmonizes beautifully with the pale tuxedo.
Pampas Grass and Greens
Tumblr media
An inky tux with a black shawl collar can be difficult to accessorize. This bright pampas grass boutonnière contrasts exquisitely in both texture and tone without getting lost in the mix.
Purple Clematis
Tumblr media
Purple and blue are far from your traditional nuptial color palette. But this purple clematis boutonniere and gray-blue suit certainly make a case for the combo.
Berry and Gum Leaves
Tumblr media
A simple boutonniere comprised of berry, gum leaves, and additional greenery adds a fresh touch to this black-and-white ensemble. How sweet is that twine wrapped around the stems?
Mums With Dried Grasses and Ferns
Tumblr media
We're definitely digging this combination of bold, spicy hues with all-black attire and turquoise accents. The rich boutonnière gets its character from sunset-hued mums, dried grasses, and ferns.
Ivory Rose and Rosemary
Tumblr media
Roses and rosemary seem like they would go hand in hand, which is why we're surprised we haven't seen more of them together. This herbaceous medley consists of a single ivory rose and clusters of rosemary all wrapped in matching satin ribbon.
Astilbe Tied With Ribbon
Tumblr media
Hello, texture! Fluffy and poignant astilbe is backed by greenery and held tightly with ribbon in this boutonnière. Check out how the pink ribbon picks up on the slightest bits of pink in the blooms.
Lavender and Olive Leaves
Tumblr media
Fairy-tale nuptials in the French countryside clearly call for an equally enchanting boutonnière. This storybook design pairs sprigs of heavenly lavender with olive leaves and ties it all together with frayed linen in the palest shade of blue. Et voilà!
Garden Roses and Hypericum Berries
Tumblr media
Pale green blooms and hints of white just exude "alfresco wedding." This boutonnière consists of locally foraged botanicals, garden roses, and hypericum berries in the most revitalizing of hues.
Mini Tulips and Herbs
Tumblr media
Who doesn't instantly smile when looking at this jubilant little mix? Here, happy yellow tulips and rosemary come together in the most vivacious boutonnière.
Pieris and Dried Grasses
Tumblr media
This charcoal suit takes on new life with a boutonnière of pieris and dried grasses. The sea-inspired textures and muted tones are a picture-perfect fit for a boho coastal wedding.
Succulent With Snowberries
Tumblr media
If soft, cool tones are taking up real estate on your wedding mood board, you'll want to take note of these pale blues, soft grays, and powdery greens. This succulent boutonnière is accented with yellow snowberries and dusty miller leaves for a truly unique design.
Wintry Roses and Greenery
Tumblr media
Think winter-wedding chic without all the obvious, seasonal connotations. These boutonnières of plum, dusty purple, and cranberry roses with vibrant greenery completely nailed the aesthetic.
Hydrangea Blossoms, Berries, and Acorns
Tumblr media
A white and green boutonnière comprised of hydrangea blossoms, berries, and acorns has all kinds of unexpected textures. And honestly, how sweet are those tiny acorns?
Off-White Roses
Tumblr media
This blue striped suit and polka-dot bow tie need little extra in the way of accessories. A classic boutonnière comprised of off-white roses and extended stems finishes off the look nicely.
Rustic Thistles
Tumblr media
We absolutely adore a little rustic touch to an otherwise formal fête. This blue thistle and rosemary boutonnière is simple and eye-catching.
Mustache Pin With Dried Wheat
Tumblr media
What's a wedding without a little personality? This harvest-themed boutonnière of dried wheat and pastoral flowers gets a little pizazz with a mustache pin.
Peach Ranunculus and Silver Brunia
Tumblr media
This boutonnière of a single peach ranunculus and silver brunia highlights the fact that peach tones and silvery greens are quite complementary. We especially like the unique, duo-chrome approach to ribboning off the medley in silver and black.

on demonic society: culture
long post. buckle up
general questions if everyone is freely allowed to steal and loot in a lawless world, how are shops still operating? it may be a “lawless” world but that doesn’t mean its inhabitants are completely rabid. most of them are former humans stuck in the societal grooves of their past life anyways, so there’s always at least some money in circulation out of a sense of obligation. it’s a lawless world for shop owners too so who’s stopping them from hitting thieves with the .38 special. on the flip side some shops are just running for the love of the game babey
cultural values (quick overview version)
hedonism is awesome
i got mine, fuck you
despite everything they love a tight-knit community
ur completely bitchmade if you cave to what others expect of you
your lineage means jack shit
naming conventions draw upon the macabre, the evil and the esoteric for names, as well as variants on lucifer (ex. lucille, vice, maljean, and venom)
family structure biological family ties are extremely loose, so most don’t even end up living with their children (who instead look for that found family type beat). the most common structure is in groups of 4 or 5 with equally shared responsibilities. groups are usually formed out of a need to stick together, plus combined income and so on. younger demons will live with their parents for a brief period of time, and since there is no central education system they must learn life essentials via osmosis.
non-hereditary demons may end up reuniting with their family from their previous life or choosing to start fresh, most choosing the latter. some are also known to move into pre-existing groups for their first few years down under.
angel relationship/cohabitation aren’t foaming at the mouth to obliterate their divine counterparts like the angels are. there’s a sizable number of them down under since a bunch of angels defected when lucifer fell, and afterwards a lot have been exiled from utopia. most want to hide their angelic features or not make a big deal out of them, since opinions on angels differ wildly from person to person.
cultural divides wife wars small sect of the population that thinks hellion society was at its best when [REDACTED] was lucifer’s wife and want to “reject modernity, return to the green top” as they say
anti-angel sentiment some people are bigoted idk what to tell u. they form a sort of "square vs rectangle" idea with the fundies, not all anti-angel people are fundies but every fundie is anti-angel.
the fundies they’re their own cultural divide. basically militant extremists that violently oppose technological and cultural progress (trans-humanism especially) because it strays father from the “peak” of hellion civilization when you could easily kill angels with the flick of your wrist and eat the drywall with no consequences (and lucy had NO wife). they want to send your ass back to the stone age so bad
the doomsday cultists
…will be discussed at a later date
niche subcultures homebrew freaky little basement rats that wanna hurt you so bad (with their own homemade atrocities of course). put that basement dwelling to work by making pipe bombs, flashbangs, hand grenades and bootleg spell charms (lab-synthesized magic in a marble-like capsule) to use in…street fights mostly. they make up a good percent of both the buying and selling portion of the weapons black market. the especially weird ones are currently innovating the homebrew meta by adding canisters of Unspecified Chemicals to their creations. and anthrax spores that too
magicians dnd nerd club that wants to revive the dead art of magic (they can’t on a wide scale unfortunately, more on magic here) but they can sure try. think that spell charms are a farce and they’re so above using them guys trust me
fashion the most common aesthetic seen down under is largely 2000s punk/scene inspired; mostly blacks, neon accents, funky accessories, the works. other popular styles include neo-military, proto-military, victorian, oddcore, jester/clown, futuristic, delinquent, and archaic. NAGAJAM is a popular designer brand that falls under the futuristic category.
makeup isn't stigmatized and is widely used by the public in smaller amounts. for most it’s only really used to accent features or pull attention to their facial markings/ drawing on the appearance of markings, but some are dedicated to creating bright and angular looks.
angelpunk counterculture a notable subset have adopted the fashion and aesthetics of their angelic counterparts, in part to spite them. angel-like features and clothing are viewed as radical/punk, since it’s interpreted as them ‘wearing the skin’ of those who want them dead.
emeralds culturally significant stone. fell out of lucifer’s crown when he was cast out of heaven and struck with a sword by the archangel michael. symbolizes pride, greed, and hellion nationalism. commonly paired with rubies in jewelry.
food my stummy hurts 🥺 (eats a meal’s worth of goods that can’t even be classified as food when exported out of the United States)
mmm i love heavily processed foods yum
i eat-a the onion like an apple haha
anything sour or acidic is a staple of their food culture. green apples, onions, citrus fruits and the like are very common in native dishes. get ready for canker sores babey
a lotta stuff is heavily salted/preserved since depending on where you live electricity is not a constant
very meat-centric, mostly chicken since they’re fairly inexpensive to raise down under
they can and will drink petrol like it's orange juice
the thing about cans energy drink cans (monster in particular) are extremely valuable down under. they don’t have the licensing to sell them there so the only way you can get one firsthand is traveling to the overworld to get one (which nobody really wants to do) so they’re automatically quite rare and considered a commodity. most don’t actually drink it but keep it for the can which can essentially act as a secondary currency in some places. due to their status, people will want to flex them in outlandish ways. you’ll see people making candles with theirs and selling the cut-off tops or some completely goofy shit
pop tabs collected from these cans are also a popular accessory, strung into necklaces, earrings, made into chains, sewn on pants as accents, etc. colorful ones are the most sought after.
the old gods killed by lucifer a long time ago during his deicide era but still permeate through pop culture. cosmic horror and kaiju are popular genres throughout multiple mediums. one thing they have in common with the great upstairs is that they both worship long-dead idols from years past, though not to the same extent the angels do with the Old Divines. they’re not petrifying their corpses and hanging them up for all to see whilst deifying them post-mortem like the angels are but i think it would be quirky if they did

5 Funky Vases For Your Home
Tumblr media
A funky vases is an essential part of any floral arrangement, and a simple, pretty one can make all the difference in your decor. Whether you're looking to fill your home with fresh blooms or you want to add a decorative touch, there are plenty of funky vases available to help you achieve the look you've been dreaming about.
The rustic vase trend is a classic and timeless style that works well for many decorating styles and flower types, so it's an easy pick for most homes. As Gabrielle Union shows, it can look best with a few natural elements like moss, branches, and twigs to complement the rustic vibe.
There are a few ways to make this design your own, including painting it and adding some sand or a marble finish for a more rustic look. You can also add a decorative piece to the front of it, such as a ruffle, a ribbon, or a floral print to really make it pop.
DIY Paper Mosaic Vases
This DIY project is a great way to spruce up a plain glass jar and give it a beautiful paper mosaic pattern without spending too much money on supplies. All you need are some squares of paper (the same kind you use for scrap-booking, art or papercraft projects) and a good quality glue.
Once the whole surface is covered, let it dry for at least twenty minutes and then varnish carefully, ensuring that all parts are firmly glued down. A second or third coat of varnish can be applied if you'd like a high gloss finish.
These are great for displaying flowers, stationary or trinkets and make lovely, home-made gifts. They're also a great addition to any child's bedroom or playroom.
Fruits and greenery are another easy, inexpensive way to fill your vases open florist near me. They're a nice change from traditional florals and will add a touch of color and flavor to any space. You can find these types of flowers at most grocery stores and even your local farmers' market, so it's an easy and frugal way to add some life to your decor.
Split peas are a perfect floral choice for spring and summer. They add a bright pop of color to any room and look particularly great in a white or yellow vase with a splash of greenery to make the whole thing pop!
Rock salt terrariums are another great idea for vase decoration. They're an inexpensive and easy way to create a natural-looking garden, especially for a Fourth of July party or patriotic theme!
Dyeing cheap rock salt can make it look like gemstones around your candles, which is a gorgeous way to decorate any home! They're also a fun project for kids to do with their friends.
Wood half spheres are another great way to decorate a glass jar! They're easy to cut and paint to a color of your choosing, but they can be stained or painted to match the rest of your décor as well. To know more information visit at www.funkyflowers.com.au.

its nearly midnight (now past midnight as i finish the post) and here are my tips on doing laundry:
you can take it or leave it (i’m just some guy) but i have been doing it myself or with my mom for the better part of 15 years and realize there’s people my age or younger who struggle having to do it themselves
it depends on your washer, but most items that say “hand wash only” will usually be fine on gentle cycle in a lingerie bag (or pillowcase). similarly, most “line dry” or “dry flat” items will survive just fine on a hanger. but if you have a lot of fragile things it may be a good idea to invest in a drying rack
separating it out by color: well if you gotta do two loads you might as well. but most modern laundry detergents don’t usually bleed the dyes so it’s really not necessary. the exceptions are: first wash on a garment with color bleed warnings, and sometimes you will get that one pair of jeans that really does bleed all over the shout every damn time.
dry clean only is a pain in the ass, but you can ruin and shrink garments that react badly to water. running it on air dry with some sheet might smell nice but it won’t remove the oils from your skin. that being said you can cheat it a little--some synthetics like rayon and acrylic can get wet and still retain shape, especially if in a blend (viscose is also rayon, and only the softest, most delicate and expensive weaves are actually “faux silk” that is too weak to support itself when wet). if it’s 100% silk or wool, though, get that shit cleaned properly.
which brings me to...care instructions! read them! you can greatly extend the life of fast fashion items, for example, by keeping them out of the dryer and running them on gentle cycle. the biggest factors in wearing out your clothes (besides actually wearing them) are the spin cycle and the DRYER (especially heat, but also getting tossed around with other clothes).
similarly, read the fabrics! knowing what your clothes are made of helps you know which directions you can ignore to make your life easier. 100% cotton really can shrink, but synthetics like nylon and polyester are basically plastics and there is a risk of melting if they’re not rated safe for dryers. rayon is basically wood pulp and is more brittle than cotton or linen when wet, but if it’s not particularly fine, and especially if it’s mixed with other materials, it can often support itself enough to dry nicely. search engines are your friend if you’re not sure what a fabric can take
you can also extend the life and color of many items by washing them inside out--some say so on instructions! for everyday use i haven’t had a problem with gentle cycle (the main downside is that a less violent spin cycle means they’re more damp coming out of the machine) and low heat for dryer pretty much everything. but anything that can go in a dryer can also be hung up. just make sure to straighten it out a little so it doesn’t air dry into funky shapes.
other tips for extending life: wash everything cold unless you’re doing something special
if you’ve got enough to justify it, do towels and sheets separately. they can handle the rougher spin, hot water and high dryer heat without shrinking
don’t put your bras in the dryer..they already get rough treatment and are so expensive. in fact, get a lingerie bag for them and other gentle items (i promise you can find one at the 99 cent store if need be, so price is not an excuse!)
ironing--i pretty much never do this, but... when you do need to, err on the side of caution with lower heat and plenty of steam (if called for)--oh, and have your clothes inside-out! (with only one layer of fabric between the iron and the board.) follow the tags as this is another case where you risk damaging the garment by going in too hot. you’ll probably have to go slower than you like, and sometimes you do need to hold the iron on an area for it to conform, just keep it to only a couple seconds and go in multiple times to avoid burning (i think? once again this is tedious and i hate it). to make sure your clothes are flat, look  at the seams and try to make out the different pieces of fabric, laying out each section as flat as you can and ironing just that area. that narrow end of the ironing board is designed for sleeves and anything else that’s more tube than square.
stains: will go away best when fresh. turn the garment inside out, run under cold water, and rub it out with dish or hand soap.
old stains: while hot water can set new stains, it will drag old ones out of the fabric (still work inside out to “raise the stain”). these are a bit more work to get. you can scrub with baking soda & water paste, diluted lemon juice/vinegar, or watered down dish soap, and alternate between soaking it, scrubbing vigorously, rinsing and repeating. (you may want to test the cleaning agent another part of the fabric if you’re worried about discoloration)
my personal low-effort favorite that seems to be working, though, is to soak it in diluted dish soap (or just slather with dish soap and hope it’s still effective if you’re me) and let it fuck off for 3 hours to 3 days before laundry day. rinse out most of the soap before throwing it in the machine so those mega-suds don’t kill your washer.
for tough stains they may have to go through multiple treatments and washes. i usually just have some clothes on standby to be treated and thrown in with regular laundry, though if you have a lot of stained items you can d a whole load of just them in hot water (and alternate with treating until the stains go away) (wayy to much work for me though)
for the love of god, DON’T PUT ANYTHING STAINED IN THE DRYER if you want it to wash out. it’s not impossible to get out all set stains (i’ve done it), but it’s a bitch and a half to do. some garments may truly be beyond rescue
i have never used bleach on a garment in my life. some garments can handle it (often no chlorine) but as far as i’m concerned that shit’s just for killing bacteria
the dreaded folding--well it depends on your personality but here’s what helps me:
put your freshly dried clothes in a basket (mine was 3 bucks at walmart--once again, no excuse, do this. it will be good for you.). and preferably put it down near a surface you’ll use for folding. (a bed or couch works just as well as a countertop)
my strategy is to get it done right away. the moment it’s out of the dryer, we don’t sit down until everything’s all set for folding. and then we sit where we fold
similarly, it helps to do it in the same place every time so it becomes a habit. i always fold mine while watching tv.
reward yourself and relax for a minute after you’re done. you’ve completed a big task!

EVERHOOD: Pinocchio in Psychedelic Purgatory: the Rock Opera Adventure. OR: I walked backwards into hell, and felt euphoria as I became privvy to the Divine Truths
Hello tumblr people. I’ve been Away. I played a game recently and I wanted to talk about it.   damnit i really wanted to put pictures into this mini essay. ive been away from this garbage site for too long, i dont know how to do it lol.  ok anyway    First, I want to say to the developers and anyone else that this has quickly become one of my all time favorite games. Currently writing I have personally never felt a greater emotional attachment to an experience with a piece of software. Perhaps it is the extreme idiosyncratic nature of it, perhaps it is the deeply intriguing storyline, mostly however it is a combination of those in addition to some of the most outstanding psychedelic visuals I have ever seen, particularly in the finale sequence, and a killer soundtrack that combines many genres but focuses mostly to being as bangers as possible. I will be upfront and say this game comes with a boatload of trigger warnings, and thus the aforementioned idiosyncratic nature of it may not appeal to everyone, however I feel it necessary to indicate potential content warnings here as I would hate for people to be triggered: epilepsy is the big one, I myself have mild stutter based epilepsy and it didn't cause health problems or anything but my case is not universal. Anyway. That is a hard warning on epilepsy. I do it because The Incredibles 2 did not, lmao (that's an example of the kind of visuals that trigger me personally. An aside ) Other things include (spoilers): arachnophobia, misophonia (screeches, unsettling sounds), themes of death, immortality, suicide. Some game mechanics are not immediately intuitive and puzzles require some pretty clever but sometimes obtuse solutions. Direction is not always super clear either. People have complained of performance issues but I am leaving this review after playing the switch port, which played smoothly other than some awkwardly long loading times here and there. What I have played of PC so far runs smooth but as of writing, performance for me was fine (my pc is a lowend budget build). There is a difficulty to it. Even playing on easier modes, it can be quite unforgiving. If you're a fan of hard games (I am but I suck at them) and rhythm games (this is, uh, Not? That? Almost functions as half walking sim, half rhythm Game, dodgy shoot em up kinda feels. Truly unique gameplay I think. Constantly switches things up, too. But yes I also adore rhythm games, and yes i also do suck at those too.), half of it is that. The devs troll you with puzzles. It's truly a wild experience as it advertises, one of a kind. And yet, however.... This game wears, much like its heart,, its references, on its sleeve. If you are not into that kind of thing, you will probably be annoyed by this game. It also loves to delv into meta, as many puzzles and interactions are references to the UI of the game itself. Personally, I'm not wild about meta but I appreciate the ernestness here, so I'm willing to roll with whatever this game throws at me because every turn feels unexpected, fresh, funky, somber, and wildly intelligent, with boldly sincere ludonarrative choices, script and art direction. If you like Geno from super Mario Brothers, which, guess what, narrator here LOVES Geno from Super Mario Brothers, this is functionally the game you've always wanted that Nintendo could never make because Square has held Geno hostage in some kind of underground torture facility since 1995. Turns out they were rather right to do so, because when that puppet is out serving a higher authroity, he can be quite dangerous. Narrarively it borrows much from its sources but I would argue there's proof the writers have spent time thinking about the implications of their source materials worlds, and that reflection casts itself back to create this, experience that is wholly unique even if we know Red is Geno and "Gaster" (who was based on Uboa from Yume Nikki or princess mononokes forest spirits), and some kind of disco Marceline character who changes their identity frequently, skeleton brothers- well undead brothers, really - We have to remember in the creation and consumption of media sometimes, influences and archetypes are ever present and Everhood almost itself is a realm that would indulge in the idea of self referential material. It makes for this very Jungian experience of friendly archetypes we're familiar with, which works well with this setting of an immortal realm. Thats not to say the personalities we do meet aren't expounded upon - they are, heavily, and become uniquely their own. (Spoiler) if my theory is to be believed this world is a purgatory where people have made their own artificial vessels and as time has made them bored (though some seem to be having a good time) while typical strains of the Pinocchio myth are thrown in about questions of identity and death - and probably even more so towards Timothy Learys concept of the Ego Death, or the return to the collective soup of unconcious being. Undertale will probably always be a reccomendation even by its own reference to it so comparisons to it will be littered through here. It feels like the developers were emboldened by Toby Foxs spirit in game development (his creative energy is rather infectious) and shared many similar ideas, but this feels far more aimed towards a maturer audience (references to the things I mentioned in the trigger warning list) and focused on achieving this feeling that its predecesors have as well. Yume nikki. Lisa. Earthbound. Toby's games. super Mario rpg in its humor, Cat Soup in its psychedellic depressive vibes, all this cool indie cult classicy kinda mash up soup.  bizarre antics and then these characters who have surprising depth the further you go. It has been 6 years since Undertale came out, and the developers for Everhood have called a lot of the "what ifs" that fans of that game ask, an answer in their own game. (What if No Mercy was forced, for example? What if going against destiny is the wrong thing to do? Why is Death such a Bad Thing? etc!) And the further along you progress, the smarter the story gets, the more complex the narrative threads and characters. This game knows how to write compelling literature and that wasn't an element I expecting but god am I so glad for it. Literally my pea brain saw Red's design flipping around some frets on a streamers videocapture (shoutout to based fellow tampa native Charles White, thank you for being witty and having good taste and your Floridian comisery.) one night and went "oh i like." But the experience I got in exchange was, so, so much more than that (but the tetris effect won't let that image disappear from my eyelids quite yet haha.) I hear there are multiple endings and one requires a 3 hour long trek. I'm not done with the game at the time of reviewing. You bet your sweet ass I am going to find out the Ultimate Truth. I found a way to deal with some of the bullshit in other games, I may not be great at games but I want to see whatever imagery these guys put on screen so it compels me to seek out all the alternative routes. I am going to be following these developers projects very closely. If this is their debut, their next project will be ... ... I would hate to force expectations, like if you just made a magnum opus like this it'd be perfectly alright to retire, but I just once again want to say thank you to the developers for putting your heart on display for the world to see. I see it. I have dealt with struggles similar to the ones in the stories this game articulates about anxiety and depression, existentialism and dread, dissociation and all the heavy themes that were risky to include narratively - I'm certaintly glad you took the risks you did. May update this review as I get further along the story but yeah. Tl;dr: haha pinocchio myth done well make brain go brrr. 9.99999999999998/10. I am taking an infitisimal fraction of a point off because of the ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ spider in the monster maze. that thing was abhorrent, but I won't let it deter anyone else who wants to play.

Jewels from my Wip: Dark Things
Ok yeah, it’s been taking a lot longer getting Chapter 1 together and now that I have a new main character (his name is Bryan btw)(He’s pretty sane)(which is actually pretty rare in my stories) I’ve been having to redo stuff (also I am super lazy and have not been getting work done)(Also also I’ve been traveling so that’s fun). So without further ado, dark Dark Things:
“I don’t know.. wh-what’s going on..” Bryan stared at the small brown frog for a really long time, his words slowed as he took another shot of vodka. “But you, you a funky gay fellow.”
“I'm older than you.” Peter said, crossing his arms. “If only by a few seconds.”
“Yeah well!” Maria turned around to face her twin brother. “My body may be young but my mind is old as fuck. As old as the first of the humans.”
“And yet, you are still unable to solve simple math.” I sighed and turned to my friend. “So very tragic.”
“NEITHER CAN YOU, IDIOT!” Maria shouted.
“Well I'm not the one who bragged, and I quote to be 'as old as the first of the humans'.” I lay my head on Peter's lap. “So there, be square.”
“With age you grow experience, not intelligence.” She sneered, her brown eyes piercing mine.
“Yeah and your brother is the perfect example of that.” I grinned
“I'm fucking older and smarter then both of you!!” Peter pushed me off him. “And when did we turn me, I thought we were bullying Maria. Together. Like a team!”
“Why am I here?” Bryan looked over to the hoard of vampires, their bloodshot eyes studying his every move as he took in a deep breath. “What did I do to you, God?”
“Peter.. I.” The words stopped in my throat. “I.. please, just listen to me..”
“I can't.” His voice cut through the air as his blood dripped off my chin and onto the floor. “I just fucking can't ok?!”
“Typical..” I scoffed, nodding towards Peter. “Fucking Slav...”
“Slav? SLAV???” Peter turned to me. “SLAV?”
“Yeah.. that's what he said.” Bryan looked up from his phone with a frown on his face. “Is there something wrong with that?”
“Hello???! Yes?” Peter placed his hand on his chest. “Do I look like a fucking Slav to you?”
“I dunno, ya'll look the same to me.” I shrugged
“Dude!” Bryan shot me an angry look.
“DO I LOOK LIKE A BLOND WHITE PERSON TO YOU???” Peter growled obviously offended. “I'm a fucking Bulgar, ya Idiot!”
“And my grandmother is from Nouvelle-Aquitaine. Your point?” A laugh escaped my lips. “It's just like an American saying, 'Hey, I'm from Kentucky.' and no one fucking knows what country that is or what the fuck they're talking about.”
“Kentucky, like Kentucky Fried Chicken?” Bryan shoved my arm and laughed as well. “That's literally the worst example you could have thought of!”
“Yeah ok, fine.” I said, shoving back. “But still..”
“My country is literally called Bulgaria!!” Peter's dark cheeks flushed. “SeRIouSlY!!”
“One of your countries.” Bryan smiled. “Don't forget, you ARE half German.”
“I wish I could fucking forget.” Peter mumbled. “But then YOU have to remind me!!”
“Ok, ok...” I put my hands up in surrender. “So tell me more about your Slavic roots, oh Peter dear...”
“Fresh plagues.” She laughed, “Sweet cockwaters stole thy tongue.”
“I love you, Ellie but what the actual fuck are you even saying?”
“Are you ready to fucking die??”
“I'm a bad bitch you can't kill me.” I gave them a sad smile. “Cause you've already fucking killed me and then brought me back..”
“Ok that is it!” Steff interrupted me, their form changing as they lunged at me, only for Ellie to intervene.
“No no no, we are not murdering Noel… again.” Ellie softly sang- “Calm down, breath.. breath.”
“Let me finish!” I laughed. “You murdered me! And brought me back as a dumbass goth emo bloodsucker, just so I could fight in your stupid war.. For what?”
“You have no idea!” Steff yelled but only used 3% to fight against their girlfriend. “You have no fucking clue!”
“NO! And You Know What?” I got up to face the fallen angel. “I don't really give a shit about your dumb fucking war.”
“Dude, did you suddenly become suicidal?” Bryan rushed over to help Ellie hold Steff back. “Or did you truly become dead inside?”
“Now listen here.” I walked over to where my friends held them back. “I want no part in this. You turned me into a dark thing but I still won't play by your rules, ya filthy demon!”
Ellie and Bryan traded looks and stepped away from their friends. Steff's face was calm, eerily so. Their eyes became blacker then the darkest black and out of their back sprouted dark wings, broken and twisted. In that moment I felt an emotion I thought I would never feel again in my life time, ever since my mortality was stolen from me and replace with an abomination. An emotion, I believed I could never feel.
Regret.
It coarsened through my veins and caused the fear in my chest to rise up into my throat until it lay on my tongue, waiting, begging to be released. But I could not admit

10 Splendid Small Kitchens Ideas You Can Use
Small kitchens are the worst in many ways because they limit us so much that they cannot accommodate full-size appliances, large countertops or enough storage. But that doesn't mean you should just give up if you have a small kitchen design.
In fact, this is why you need to be innovative and look for new ways of organizing your kitchen and making it as efficient and practical as possible while maintaining a friendly and pleasant look throughout the house.
It should give you a nice boost to these top 10 ideas.
1.  Wroclaw, Poland
Tumblr media
Squeezed inside an apartment of 29 square meters from Wroclaw, Poland, this small kitchen built by Ewa Czerny demonstrates that not only is it possible to make small spaces look stylish, but it's not that difficult. In this case, the minimalist paint and fabric palette helped a lot.
2.  Moscow, Russia
Tumblr media
This is the tiny kitchen of an apartment located in Moscow, Russia, measuring just 33 square meters across. Studio Bazi designed it and it seems to be connected seamlessly to a large storage unit. In fact, folding doors make it possible to fully hide this kitchen and disguise it as a large closet space. Also have some other small kitchen ideas.
3.  Brazil
Tumblr media
There are many modern homes with open floor plans where the kitchen, living room, dining area and sometimes other functions share a single volume too. In some cases, such as that of this 38 square meter apartment in Brazil, there is no room to work with so the transition between functions can be somewhat abrupt. A cool detail is a divider between the small kitchen and the living area, making the transition quite seamless. This is Estúdio BRA's model.
4. Paris
Tumblr media
Using light colors and finishes is a simple and efficient way to make a small space appear larger and airy. This Paris apartment of 30 square meters designed by Richard Guilbault is a good example. We love the little white kitchen and the tall island that doubles as a table and bar for breakfast.
5. Paris
Tumblr media
In small apartments, room dividers are very useful because they enable one to organize the floor plan without the need for interior walls that take up valuable space. For example, take this small apartment from Paris. It has a floor plan of 25 square meters, and a shelving unit separates the small kitchen and living area from the sleeping area. It's a cool idea produced by SWAN Architectes design.
6. Tokyo
Tumblr media
Most small kitchen ideas about the kitchen have to do with custom furniture. Tokyo's apartment is a good example. Instead of separate rooms with solid walls between them, Yuichi Yoshida & associates gave an open layout to this apartment where furniture delineates the functions. The combo of the kitchen and bedroom unit is quite cool and unusual.
7. Herbal Decor (interior)
Tumblr media
A well-organized kitchen saves time and space and can affect the entire home's overall decor and atmosphere, particularly if it is part of an open floor plan. In this sense, this design created by llabb is a great inspiration. With the sink on one side and the cooktop on the other side, there's just enough counter space in between to prepare simple meals and there's even some space in front of the window for fresh herbal pots.
 8.  Studio Bazi
Tumblr media
Since there is not enough space to work with and not enough time for additional features, a small kitchen has to stand out by specifics such as a bright and eye-catching backsplash, an uncommon color of furniture or design features that look good while saving space. This Studio Bazi designed apartment is a good example of this.
9.  Sao Paulo
Tumblr media
After a complete remodeling, this small Sao Paulo apartment was given a new and improved design thanks to Vão Studio, which makes sense in reality. The social areas and the kitchen now face the façade of the road, allowing the private area to sit backward. At the same time, there is a lot of character in the new interior design. See the kitchen and how welcoming it looks with the wooden storage unit and the top white cabinets.
10. Corner Kitchen
Tumblr media
Many kitchens are small and some are very small, such as this one. This is a kitchen in the corner with little room for the basic things like a stove and a sink. Still, it has plenty of storage space and it is beautifully framed by a full-size fridge. Also, check out this funky wallpaper and the pink floor tiles.

Requested Little Mix Outfit Inspired For BlackPink Concert
Jade
New Look Blue Camo Pocket Utility Jeans: £27.99. So if your a avid follower of Little Mix, You would know Jade has a fetish for a certain pair of orange trousers. She`s worn them from Disneyland to Tanzania, to rehearsals to the Kids Choice Awards and you know what? I think she really likes them. They may be out of some peoples comfort zone or a bit too garish but when you want to make a statement you reach for these. Camo pants have taken off these last couple of years, Not because we all want to join the army but because they have become a fashion staple, Becoming trendy and modern. They have that edgy, Dynamic edge and you can wear them casually or for a assault course. Ideal for festivals so they are versatile and ideal for a Blackpink concert too..You can get them in a variety of colours too from Purple, Green and Grey.
Doc Martens: £130. In this post we have a variety of shoes to choose from, From chunky trainers to the heavier trainers to these boots. No question about it Jade loves her DMs. Together with this look you could combat the world. You don`t have too wear DMs, you can put some white/black trainers with this look too!.
PrettyLittleThing BLACK CREPE SPAGHETTI STRAP BANDEAU CROP TOP: £6. This bralet is all part of the layering process, Jade hasn`t really been seen wearing a bralet too many times...But looks can be deceiving because just seen what we would do with this top.
I Saw It First Black D Ring Slogan Tape Belt: £6. Now for those really into their fashion, you would know these belts have really taken off. Many dupes of the OFF WHITE yellow belt have been made and copied and you would find these everywhere. You can find them all in different colours and styles and patterns. These are a great belt for that added grunge effect, It gives a extra spark for your outfit. You can also buy this belt in yellow.
SkinnyDip HEARTBREAKER NECKLACE: £4. Not many of you are aware but Jade is known for her quirkyness, Which I personally love about her. So to fill any blank bits or for that extra bit of extraness we have added a necklace, You can get a variety of quirky necklaces from Skinnydip to choose from, from different quotes to phrases etc.
Bershka metallic cross body bag: £11.50. So initially I wanted a cool rockstar, edgy shoulder bag, We found one but it was out of stock and that was the only one I could find. We picked this one up because it`s quirky and it`s rainbow and we all know Jade loves rainbows. I can understand how you might think it`s for five year olds but it would liven up your outfit. But if you didn`t like that we understand, We also managed to pick up another bag with the Burberry pattern and again this could pass off as designer and is ideal for keeping the essentials safe. You can see it here
Black Crop T-shirt: Now we added this one because it`s a great way to layer. If you take a look back at the Summer Hits Tour last year, Jade wore a black cropped t-shirt just like this one with a bikini top underwear. This was the idea I was going for and it`s a perfect example of layering. Simply add the black bralet underneath (Or a different coloured one) and your good to go. Of course you don`t have to buy one, I couldn`t find any cropped t-shirts as small as this on the market so the easiest way to get one would be to buy a plain black t-shirt and cut it, Of course the ragged edges would make it look even more edgy.
Jesy
Look No.1
Topshop Bleach Flap Rip Mom Jeans: £42. Jesy has been really into the denim thing lately. She seems to love baggy boyfriend/Mom jeans and wears them down casually or dressed up. If you have a look back through her Instagram you will see she has worn mom jeans a lot on nights out or casually. You don`t have to go to a concert looking all glammed up to have a good time.
PrettyLittleThing  WHITE JERSEY SQUARE NECK BRALET: £8. What`s also been happening lately is that Jesy has been really into wearing padded bra, Actual padded bras you wear under your shirt. Now I couldn`t choose a bra because not everyone feels comfortable wearing one let alone wearing one under your t-shirt. So we went further and went for something longer..a Bralet!. Jesy likes to keep to her top half simple..She likes to show her toned stomach and arms. You could do too, When your dancing around you don`t want to feel sticky or hot. I know a bralet may not seem like everyones cup of tea either so you can swap this with a t-shirt and the outfit would still look good.
PrettyLittleThing CLOVER BLACK STRAP HEELED SANDALS: £20. This outfit would be a mixture of grunge and classy with these heels. Can feel like a sophiscated young lady whilst wearing black heels and mom jeans. All the rage at the moment.
H&M Narrow belt: £6.99. It`s your choice if you wanted to add a belt or not, or let the jeans free like Perrie does. Or if you don`t want your pants falling down (Or you hate pulling them up every 2 seconds) then a belt for you. Belts with gold hoops have become popular recently, A lot of brands and shops have taken inspiration from Gucci`s classic belt and incorporated it in their own...For much cheaper.
ASOS DESIGN large square polysatin headscarf/neckscarf in monogram: £14. What a absolute corker this is, The scarf is a much cheaper dupe of the one Jesy owns. Not only that but it more or less has the same logo as Fendi so you could pass this off as designer. Of course you don`t have to wear this is as headscarf, You can use it as a scarf, or you can hang it around your handbag and even that would look designer (Most designers do this), Or maybe a wrist scarf? Or a neck scarf? The list is endless.
Look No.2
Sacred Hawk t-shirt dress with wolf motif: £32. I did come up with two outfits for Jesy, One is trendy and one is similar to what she has been wearing lately. But I chose this t-shirt dress because she seems to be a fan of these, She doesn`t like plain ones she has to like ones with graphic prints..Which I must admit was hard to find unless they are designer. Now you will see where I am going with this if you continue reading but it is part of a new fashion trend that is happening recently and it`s all to do with layering. I have noticed layering has become really popular lately, You might think layering is too do with keeping warm and putting another t-shirt on but oh no. Layering is experimenting and letting your creativeness run free, It`s apart of creating a dynamic yet unique look.
PrettyLittleThing NEON PINK HIGH NECK JERSEY LONG SLEEVE BODYSUIT: So we decided to include this bodysuit because 1. It`s neon and neon is at the height of it`s game at the moment and 2. It`s all to do with the layering effect. As I mentioned above layering has become popular recently with people doing different layering styles. Underneath a black t-shirt dress you can wear a bodysuit with a turtleneck (So people know your layering), So we chose this pink bodysuit. From a plain outfit to a really funky and dynamic one we have just shifted this outfit from first gear to second gear with one really simple piece. You can also get it in green here
ASOS DESIGN ribbed ankle socks: £3. If we take it back to last month, Do we remember when Jesy uploaded a photo with the green beanie? She wore a oversized t-shirt dress didn`t she? Along with boots. Well banish the boots and add some socks because girl this look is going places, This is my favourite look out of the lot. It`s so youthful, fun, fresh, unique, creative. Girl if I was going with you I would wear this look. If pinks not your thing, Then why not try some green socks? We picked these ones up from ASOS.
Nike Air Force 1 Trainers White: £54.99. How could you go wrong with the classics?
Perrie
Boohoo Petite High Rise Mom Jeans: £15. This outfit may look familiar to you, Yes I did recreate Perrie`s outfit she wore to the 1975 concert recently. She wore a pair of mom jeans. Mom jeans are for people who like to feel comfortable without the feeling of something sticking to your legs or for the people who don`t like how their legs feel in skin tight jeans. Now mom jeans arent to everyones taste..They can be awkward, Make your legs look weird and everything but you can experiment, People like different things. What to also note is that Perrie didn`t wear a belt with her outfit on that day...She went for the grunge, laidback undone look which is also becoming a trend now.
Topshop Smooth Thick Hoop Earrings: £8. Perrie has been sporting some gold hoops a lot lately so it would be wrong not to add any. Thick gold hoops are on trend at the moment.
PrettyLittleThing WHITE CHUNKY CLEATED SOLE TRAINERS: £25
Monki checked cap in beige: £10. Perrie seems to love a good hat and to make this outfit stand out, you could add a hat. If you don`t like the way your hair looks or if it looks greasy...Wear a hat. We picked up this hat from ASOS, With the Burberry pattern beaming people would think is designer and expensive. So why not look expensive for much cheaper? Perrie has been seen wearing Buberry items, But us mere mortals arent that rich so we have to settle for dupes and what better dupe then this one.
MissGuided black funnel neck long sleeve bodysuit: $15. Ah, the classic black bodysuit. These go with everything and anything. Wear these casually or glammed up..Can`t find a top that goes with that skirt? A bodysuit is the answer to your prayers.
Leigh
I Saw It First Black Slinky Zip Front Long Sleeve Unitard: £10. As of late last year when Little Mix was on the performance circuit, I noticed Leigh had been wearing a lot of skin tight clothing such as cycling shorts, bodysuits...Basically she was dressing like a cyclist. Now I`m not saying you should go and dress like one, Because let`s be honest it`s not the best fashion look and not everyone can pull it off. So we circled around that and ended up with this black unitard from I Saw It First. You will be able to dance freely, Not get so hot and you won`t have any trouble finding the fly. Slinky unitards arent just for the ballerinas, they are for the festival and concert goers. These fit in with the very grunge, 80s trend happening at the moment. If you look around you will be able to find a unitard that is fully covered everywhere without any cut outs.
Claudia Canova mermaid sequin bum bag: £20. When you go to a concert, You can`t just go without any cash or a phone or a emergency backup of a lipgloss. Would you take a bag? Maybe but we need something more convenient that won`t get in the way of our dancing. Bum bags arent just for festivals, Celebrities have been seen wearing these casually. They along with many of the items in this list have become a fashion staple these last couple of years and not only that but it`s convenient and will save you a nagging from your mum. However, WIth bum bags you can either have the fun, quirky bag or you can have the casual, sophiscated glammed up one whichever one takes your fancy it will go with your outfit. So I picked up this glam one from River Island.
Topshop PETITE Hacked Off Cropped Denim Jacket: £42. Leigh loves a denim jacket and so do we. Incase you are worried you may get cold or you want to hide your arms then a jacket is the perfect accessory.
Glamorous Chunky Mono Trainers: £34.99. Chunky trainers has become popular as of late. Personally I think you can get the ugly chunky trainer or you can get the cute chunky trainer, You can go big or you can go small. Taken I think from Yeezys these have spiralled into a trend, It`s all apart of the 80s trend.

Before & After Home Renovation with Pictures
Designed by Suzanne Bolling of Restyle Design, LLC, this home was a complete renovation! The interior designer took it down to the studs and redesigned the space for this young family. They opened up the main floor to create a large kitchen with two islands and seating for a crowd and a dining nook that looks out to the beautiful front yard. They also created two seating areas, one for TV viewing and one for relaxing in front of the bar area, and added a new mudroom with lots of closed storage cabinets, a pantry with a sliding barn door and a powder room for guests.
This home went from outdated and dark to funky and young. Although the entire home mostly features a white and grey color scheme, pops of tangerine brings a sense of happiness to this home. By the way, tangerine will be the color of 2019!
Feel free to pin your favorite “Before and After” transformations. I did a few collages so you guys would see how this home used to look before the renovation. These are always fun to look at, right?

Oaxaca Defeated Us
Tumblr media
The secrets of Oaxaca are guarded closely by the locals, we admitted to ourselves as we left the city with our tails between our legs several weeks ago.  Unfortunately we were not granted access to these secrets until it was a little too late.  Despite our hubris at the beginning of our trip (Tim having visited before, and I had done — I thought — a fair amount of research), Oaxaca defeated us.
Tumblr media
(We did go for a running tour where we made a puppy friend who followed us for the entire 6-mile route!)
Don't get me wrong; Oaxaca is a great city, and don't by any means take this post as a warning against visiting.  It is definitely worth seeing and experiencing yourself.  But there are already plenty of blogs out there singing Oaxaca's praises.  We'll likely add to those soon as well, but we thought an honest recounting of our disappointments might be refreshing to begin with.
Tumblr media
{We also went to a super cool workshop and gallery space, Espacio Zapata, founded by the art collective ASARO (Asamblea de Artistas Revolucionarios de Oaxaca).}
We don't, in any way, want to discourage anyone from visiting Oaxaca.  It's a beautiful city with lots of amazing things to do, eat, and see.  We were just thrown off by a few things:
So many tourists!
Restaurants were so much pricier than we're used to!
Cash only, for everything!
Tumblr media
You might be thinking none of these should be particularly surprising.  We are, in fact, tourists ourselves visiting a world-renowned tourist destination.  And though of course we've been spoiled living in the US for so long — where no one blinks an eye when you pull out a credit card to pay for a 33-cent transaction — we've been in Mexico for more than a month now.  We fully expected we'd have to get used to paying in cash here more than we were used to, and we have adapted accordingly.
Tumblr media
(Warm, sunny days, funky flowering trees, and street art were, thankfully, free to enjoy.)
But Mexico City has been perhaps too easy a transition for us.  Yes, there are plenty of tourists, but they're concentrated in certain parts of the city we do our best to avoid.  And while restaurants here are definitely a lot cheaper than in the US, our “moral economy,” as Tim puts it, has changed drastically.  Now the thought of paying much more than $10 USD for a meal for the two of us seems insane.  Finally, we've gotten used to paying in cash at street vendors and in mercados, but places like grocery stores (and some mercados!), museums, restaurants, bars, and movie theaters readily accept our credit cards.
Tumblr media
(One thing I would have loved to do was to visit a palenque, where mezcal is produced, to learn more about the process.  But we settled for a visit or two to this charming mezcal bar instead.)
There are plenty of cool things to see and do outside the city, but navigating the tourist infrastructure for short excursions from Oaxaca city left us feeling like cash-strapped and ignorant gringos.  It seemed the only options were ridiculously overpriced ($100+ each) guided tours or renting a private taxi FOR THE DAY.  Needless to say neither of these options sat well with us.  So we opted to stay within the city limits for this short trip, and to focus on experiencing daily life in Oaxaca instead.  How could we go wrong in a city with so much great food and museums?
Tumblr media
Well, for one, not bringing our ATM cards nor enough cash proved to be a good start.  Trying to avoid overpriced brick-and-mortar freestanding restaurants, we had our first two big meals in mercados — usually a safe bet.  Both meals, however, ended up costing us nearly $15 USD EACH.  Cash only, of course.
Tumblr media
(Making friends with local furbabies was also, thankfully, free.)
Blissfully unaware as we were that it was a major national holiday weekend (as well as prime time to escape less tropical climates?), the dates for which we booked our trip were also an oversight on our part.  Not only were all the main squares and plazas bustling with many more tourists than Tim remembered from his last visit but many of the museums we were excited to see were closed for the holiday on one or both of the full days we spent there.  And the museums that were open required — of course — cash only, and more than we had to spare once we realized even our nicer meals would require that same cash.
Tumblr media
(”Life always ends.”)
It was only on our last full day, in a delightful (and unexpectedly one-on-one!) four-hour embroidery class that I took (more on that later), when we finally cracked the code for how to do Oaxaca right (for us).
Tumblr media
(One of my favorite street foods: an entire, artfully carved fresh mango on a stick, dipped in colored sugars and/or chili powder of your choice!)
Lessons learned:
Keep a calendar of local and national holidays for whatever country you are visiting.
Bringing extra cash and your ATM card when you travel is NEVER not a good idea.
When choosing between food vendors in an unfamiliar place always just go with the one that has a line.
Some places just aren’t designed (yet) for the thrifty gringo to experience.  That’s fair.  Do what you can to learn from locals, and enjoy what is available to you.
Tumblr media
(The first and last place we visited in Oaxaca: a lovely mezcal bar that also happened to take credit cards!)
Cheers to Oaxaca and learning as we go!

Welcome to Illustrated Tape’s favourite releases of 2018 that sounded and looked good, chosen by this year’s contributors. We’ve put together a playlist featuring one track from each of the releases featured so you can check out the sounds we were digging this year. Happy listening!

Delta Sleep - Ghost City Big Scary Monsters, 10 August  Artwork: Owen Findley at Or8 Design Selected by Megan Reddi // IT014
This is my favourite music/artwork combo of 2018! The whole album is just amazing - it is beautifully arranged and has this lovely dreamy quality to it, with repeated musical motifs woven throughout to really pull the whole album together. Not only is Ghost City musically fantastic, but the artwork is beautiful and so fitting for the album. It is designed and screen printed by Owen Findley and the warm colours, imagery and textures are just spot on.
Definitely my favourite release of 2018. It is my go-to driving album and I will be blasting it while we’re driving around this Christmas!

Okay Kaya - Both Heavy Body, 1 June  Artwork/design: Kaya Wilkins, Aaron Maine, Phillip Wong
Selected by Hannah Buckman // IT016
Okay Kaya’s Both as an album that came out this year which I enjoyed, and which I feel has a strong visual component to it. To me the album feels sickly (in a good way), gloomy but still pop. I think the mood is conveyed really well through the Adinah Dancyger directed music vids and the album art.
I liked finding out more about Kaya’s thinking behind the project, like how the twin in the videos is like a physical manifestation of trauma... it’s something that once I read I couldn’t stop thinking about. The idea of something traumatic inducing this birth of a second self, a kind of split off part that is still attached in some way to the whole, but there being a kind of safety in acknowledging what might be a darker part of yourself, from a distance. Also the album art kind of conveys the idea of duality and how that relates to race/sexuality, but I didn’t feel like that was really explored as much. I think I like this album ‘cos it kind of ties in with things (mentioned above) I’m currently interested in, but maybe it feels a bit surface-y at times.

Quavo - Quavo Huncho Capitol / Mowtown / Quality Control, 12 October  Artwork: Mihailo Andic
Selected by Conner Perry // IT020
I think my favourite music/design combo of this year has to be Quavo’s Quavo Huncho. Not only is it full of bangers, the cover by Mihailo Andic is just brilliant. It really sets itself apart from the Migo’s visuals and changes the way you listen to the record. Definitely check out the rest of his work, especially the stuff for Lil’ Yachty.

Parquet Courts - Wide Awake! Rough Trade, 18 May  Artwork: A. Savage
Selected by Holly St Clair // IT021
I was really late to the Parquet Courts party, but actually both of my initial encounters with their two recent releases have been solid arguments for the importance of decent album artwork. For both Wide Awake! and Human Performance I ran into - literally - the artwork before the music. Twice, two years apart, whilst wandering around London I turned a corner and came face to face with Adam Savage’s superb cover work. He smacked me in the face with poppy colours and amorphous dancing forms and I loved every moment. Add in an anarchic use of type and you’ve got me shouting, “Oh shit! A new Parquet Courts album!” to no one in particular outside an old meat market in Shoreditch.
A. Savage is both front man and painter and that adds a special flavour to the whole affair. Album marketing can be a laboured, commercially driven affair, there’s something authentic - a little DIY flavour - about this relationship between artwork and music. It’s a nice parallel to the musical throwbacks typical of the bands style. Wide Awake! dropped earlier this year and it’s fab. (Although, I love the artwork so much even if it was god awful I’d still buy the record and hang it on my wall.)

D.A.L.I - When Haro Met Sally Burning Witches, 23 May  Artwork: Luke Insect
Selected by Thomas Hedger // IT017
According to my recently played, I’ve been stuck on a pre-'90s loop. I've crept slowly into 2018's releases picking out albums like books - by their covers - and it really paid off! I don’t often delve into electronic but I love this album, it’s a perfect blend of hopping on your bike and hitting the tracks, nailing the look of how the album feels in all its haze. A solid sunny day good time.

Young Fathers - Cocoa Sugar Ninja Tune, 9 March  Artwork: Tom Hingston
Selected by Katie Chandler // IT003
This cover was immediately striking and memorable to me. Upon listening to the album, I found that the artwork resonated with this feeling of odd, unrestricted expression. It's a little unsettling, ultimately bold and intriguing. Much like the music, it feels hot and cool all at once, like a burst of energy that leaves you in a sweat. It's the exhilarating soundtrack to your runner's high, and you're not really sure why you're running or what you're running from.

Gesu no Kiwami Otome (ゲスの極み乙女。) - Suki Nara Towanai (好きなら問わない) Taco Records, 29 August  Selected by Greg Stasiw // IT009
Although it’s not the ambient and electronic fare I usually enjoy, Suki Nara Towanai (好きなら問わない) by Gesu no Kiwami Otome. (ゲスの極み乙女。) is a hoot. The artwork features a stylized neon pachinko machine. Or maybe it’s a console in a rad indie pop spaceship, which would also make sense for this funky fresh group! It feels somehow familiar, somehow alien, and altogether really, really cool.
The neon suggests something retro, and there are some retro leanings in their funkier tracks, but it's definitely neon as seen in 2018. Modern pop (and J-Pop) tropes emerge, but infectious basslines, tight drumming, and smart keys make this album something special. Some math rock even surfaces at times, and the remix included proves that this group goes for whatever feels fresh. One look at the artwork reminds me that this is one of the funnest albums I've listened to in a while. “Funnest” is definitely a word when you’re talking about this band!

Aphex Twin - Collapse EP Warp, 14 September Artwork: Weirdcore
Selected by Alex Vissaridis // IT002
2018 was a great year if you grew up listening to the music I was into. Some of my all-time favourite artists released new stuff this year, and they didn’t disappoint. The artwork was pretty excellent too, but nothing grabbed my attention like the world created around Aphex Twin’s Collapse EP. Album art doesn’t seem to mean as much as it once did, so it’s always exciting when it appears outside of the little square on your screen in unexpected ways.
This year, Aphex Twin logos appeared all over the world, from Elephant & Castle tube station to the side of a record store in Tokyo, designed in a way that made it look like the logo was collapsing into the environment around it. I’m a sucker for stuff like this; random cryptic messages that send internet detectives into a frenzy. It was eventually announced as marketing for the Collapse EP, but they kept the ‘collapsing logo’ visual going on the EP artwork, in the music video for the track ‘T69 collapse’, and even through to projection-mapped videos around London (again announced in typical smoke-and-mirrors fashion) and a collaboration with Crack magazine. Way more than just a collection of pixels.

Flohio - Wild Yout EP Alpha, 2 November Selected by Rachel Maughan // IT012
I got into Flohio after I saw her on COLORS in January with 'Band'. She's fucking explosive on that track, you can feel her spitting straight into your chest. She's been savvy with her producers and killed her work with God Colony - 'SE16' was my most played track of the year. Her 2018 EP, Wild Yout is a cocktail of perfection.
Mashing up genres it's a high energy listen with punchy, grimey hip-hop that is uniquely South London. The artwork is beautiful simplicity - her achingly slick androgynous aesthetic, the clean photographic composition, with a flowing chain to bring it tightly back to SE. Gorgeous.

Sudan Archives - Sink EP Stones Throw, 25 May Photography: Jack McKain Design: Jeff Jank
Selected By Tom J Newell // IT004
Sink submerges the listener in flowing loops and beats, with splashes of violin and vocals floating above the sunken monolith, which stands tall on the deep blue cover art. The composition is reminiscent of two of Jank’s other iconic Stones Throw sleeves, Donuts and Madvillainy and continues his striking yet varied art direction for the label.
Check out the ‘Nont For Sale’ video from the EP too, which adds powerful choreography and styling to create another successful visual accompaniment to the music. Much love to Sudan Archives and hats off to Jeff Jank. I painted a tribute to the cover art on a 12x12” piece of wood.

Drinks - Hippo Lite Drag City, 20 April Selected by Molly Fairhurst // IT015
Hazy, dazed, an album I hold dearly to 2018 (and many strangely lit walks in a then new, unknown city).
A collaboration between Cate Le Bon and White Fence’s Tim Presley, the pair took an (isolated) retreat to St Hippolyte-Du-Fort in the south of France to record, frankly, crudely, seemingly, whatever the fuck they wanted to. Hippo Lite is born, a joyful, playful, sometimes quiet, sometimes screaming object.
What senses like an eavesdrop through closed doors rightly has a cover that can’t be quite understood- a narrow column of, at the glance of the reader, ‘nonsense’ notes, which flank photos of Le Bon and Presley. Both are snapshots of an absurd holiday we have been invited along to, so long as we sit across the table. A tender and private piece.

Pigs Pigs Pigs Pigs Pigs Pigs Pigs - King of Cowards Rocket, 28 September Artwork: Sophy Hollington
Selected by Drew Milward // IT010
First off, this album is wall to wall, solid gold bangers. Kind of like the lovechild of The Fall and Black Sabbath, who has been cautioned by the police for possession of a massive bag of skunk, a bong in the shape of a skull and a copy of ‘The Holy Mountain’ on DVD.
Aside from the fact it’s a full on riff-o-rama, the artwork by Sophy Hollington is absolutely incredible. It summons up the sound of the band, via folk horror infused wildness. It really captures the sonic landscape of the album, yet completely avoids any of the cliched imagery that could so easily have taken its place. It really is the whole package.
➔ Listen to Illustrated Tapes 010: BE GONE, YOU CREATIVE GREMLINS! by Drew Milward

Djrum - Portrait With Firewood R&S, 17 August Artwork: Michael Mitsas
Selected by Sam Ailey // IT001
Portrait With Firewood is one of those rare gems within the electronic genre - a true ‘album’. With holistic production, emotional range, and a captivating narrative, this really is a stunning listening experience from start to finish. Felix Manuel combines electronic and acoustic sounds seamlessly on this intimate record, with exceptional attention to detail in his sampling and tender piano sections played by Felix himself.
Michael Mistas’s cover art is a real departure from the typical design aesthetic of electronic albums and caught my attention straight away. I love its composition and rough, imperfect execution. To me these feels reflective of the range and depth of emotional states explored across the album, and the feeling that some things are easier to express through your craft than with words. Plus I’m a sucker for pink things.

each step draws us closer to the aisle
hello, this is the thing that has been consuming my mind, soul and time. it’s the first time i’m writing a multichapter fic so let’s see how this goes. let me know what you guys think!
Summary: “Hey, babe.
Because I’m an amazing work AND life partner, I know you pretty well.
That means I knew there’d be a very high chance you’d be getting all nervous and stressed out about things going right right now. But listen, that’s not your job today, okay? The only thing you have to do is show up and marry me. Let your mom and Kylie and the rest of the wedding party put out the fires and try to relax a bit.
I made you something that I hope will help you do that.
Don’t press play until you turn the first page. And no peeking!”
song #1 - and we go a little something like this
read on ao3 or click on keep reading below!
Amy Santiago is getting married today.
In just a few hours she’ll walk down the aisle, stand by Jake’s side, vow to be his wife and take him as her husband.
There’s absolutely no reason to be nervous.
Expect for the fact that a swarm of bees have taken over the flowers, her dress hasn’t arrived yet and there was a leak in the room where the ceremony will take place. But it’s okay. She’s Amy Santiago. She’s got this. She just needs to turn on her extreme high-strung mode and deal with this because there’s no way in hell she’s letting anything go wrong with her wedding.
But when she sits down, takes three deep breaths and tries to focus, her mind is still blank. She’s looking at herself in the huge mirror in the room where she’s supposed to be getting ready, still wearing a bathrobe and a towel wrapped around her head. And everything around her is absolute chaos.
Gina and Rosa are fighting over who was responsible for the dress and whose fault it is that it isn’t here yet. Kylie is yelling at someone over the phone about the flowers and her mother is so drunk that she’s about to make the girl hired to be the master of ceremony cry because she doesn’t speak spanish. There are shoes everywhere, garment bags all around the floor and makeup products on every single surface imaginable.
Wasn’t this moment supposed to be as relaxing as possible? Weren’t they supposed to be drinking bellinis (a normal amount), telling jokes and stories about Amy and how she and Jake are perfect for each other? Were they not supposed to be doing everything to calm her nerves?
Amy feels the panic begin to rise and decides she will go outside, get some fresh air and come back with a refreshed perspective. Yes, that’s it. She just needs to get out of that room.
But as soon as she opens the door, she sees Terry on the doorway, about to knock.
The first thing she notices is that he’s crying. A lot. Literally, full on sobbing. The second thing she notices is that he’s holding a big white square box. Oh, great. She thinks - Something else is wrong.
“Terry, take a deep breath and tell me what’s the problem. Is everything okay with Jake?”
“N-n-no. It’s nothing. It’s just that… that…that...” - And there he goes again. She lost him.
Amy’s about to turn around and ask Gina to scare the Sarge into talking when she hears it.
“Santiago.” - This single word makes her automatically stand up straighter.
Captain Holt steps up beside Terry and takes the box from him. Yeah, this really can’t be good.
“Sergeant, I think I should take it from here.” - And Terry just nods and walks aways, still crying. “You must excuse Sergeant Jeffords, he is extremely emotional today. He keeps saying quote my work babies are all grown up and getting married to each other unquote. But, there’s nothing to be worried about really. Peralta just asked us to bring you your wedding gift.” He says, handing Amy the box.
“Oh. Thank you, Captain. I’ve already sent mine or I would’ve asked you to take it to him.” - She says while taking the box from his hands.
“He has gotten it and believe me, I don’t think I have ever seen him as excited. And you know that’s saying something.” - Amy smiles and slightly shakes her head. She would’ve given anything to see his reaction.
“Well, I should let you finish getting ready. Excuse me.” When she’s about to close the door, she hears him again.
“Oh, and Amy. I’m very glad you and Jake are getting married. The love you two share is unique and will bring you much joy. You’re both very lucky to have found each other.
He leaves and Amy lingers for a while on the doorway, letting the words of her mentor sink in.
When Amy finally goes back to the room, reality washes over her again. Everything is still a mess but she’s still not ready to deal with that right now. So, she decides to do what any mature adult would do: lock herself in the bathroom (believe it or not, the most peaceful environment she could find) and open her present.
She sits on the ground and opens the box, curiosity through the roof.
The first thing she sees is a handwritten note from Jake sitting on top of baby blue tissue paper. It reads:
Hey, babe.
And no peeking!
She already knew she would love whatever came out of that box, and when she removed the paper, she found his cellphone (she recognized it from the huge crack on the screen), connected to headphones on top of more tissue paper.
She took the phone, put on the headphones and unlocked it. It opened to a spotify playlist titled From A to Jay and Amy was already smiling wide when she removed the last sheet of tissue paper to reveal what was underneath it.
And oh, boy.
Jake had made a scrapbook.
She takes it from the box and when she gets a good look at the title, she’s giggling. “The Peraltiago Story”. After the bartender had named that drink after them, Jake started using the term to refer to the both of them any chance he could.
After settling the scrapbook on her lap, she turns the page and grabs the phone to press play.
The second the beats of “Funky Cold Medina” start playing, Amy’s full on laughing. She already knew what this was about and just like every time she hears that song, her mind goes back to her first few weeks at the 99.
After the most awkward first encounter she had ever had with human being thanks to Charles, both Jake and Amy tended to avoid being alone with each other as much as they could. That’s why, Amy recalls, she’d been nervous when they worked on their very first case together. A case that, as luck would have it, required long hours of staking out in Jake’s old Mustang.
At first they were quiet, talking only when absolutely necessary and looking at everything except at each other. But, within 15 minutes of sitting in a car in silence, Jake’s restlessness got the best of him and he pressed play on the very old cassette player on the console and Funky Cold Medina started playing. Amy rolled her eyes but didn’t say anything as Jake followed the beat of the song on the steering wheel with his hands.
Then the song ended.
Then it started again.
The reason Captain Holt had said “you can’t work with Jake Peralta for three years without knowing what the Funky Cold Medina is” a few years ago was because that goddamn cassingle was stuck in the deck and Jake didn’t see that as a problem at all.
That meant that any person who was lucky enough to sit in his car for any period of time would be listening to Funky Cold Medina over and over and over again.
Amy tried to endure it, she really did. But around the time the song played for a fourth time, her annoyance was through the roof and she kindly asked “Detective Peralta” to turn off the music.
Unfortunately for her, she had not managed to hide her discontentment very well and that was her undoing. Amy remembered Jake’s eyes actually start to sparkle as he realized how pissed off she was and all of sudden, he had a target.
“No. It’s my car, I’m driving, I get to choose what I want to listen.”
“First of all, you’re not choosing what you want listen. You’re choosing to listen to the most irritating song on the planet repeatedly for no reason other than to annoy me. Second of all, your “car” stinks. I bet this this hasn’t been cleaned in about a year, at least.” Amy said as she moved to shut the thing down.
“I’m going to ignore those very rude things you just said. So, you like bets, huh? Let’s play a game. Every round I win, I get one play. Every round you win, you get 5 minutes of silence.”
Amy didn’t bat an eye.
“30”
“20”
“Deal. What game?”
“Hm… Oh, I know. Two truths and one lie. You’re the new girl, gotta prove your detecting abilities to the best detective of the 99th Precinct.”
“I have to prove absolutely nothing to you.”
“Okayyyyy. Should I go first?”
They played the game for the duration of the stake out. That’s how he found out about her seven brothers, her teeth brushing obsession and her eleven straight birthdays at the planetarium. That’s how she found out about his horrifying eating habits, his six massage chairs and about pineapples.
He had thought she was a nerd.
She had thought he was a mess.
Now they were getting married.
God. Amy thinks, as she catches up with the present time and focuses her attention on the previously forgotten scrapbook on her lap, the song still playing through the headphones.
As her eyes ran over the page, her smile grew wider. Amy had no idea how Jake managed to do this but he had actually found the outtakes of the first official portrait of the 99th Precinct Squad after Amy joined them. It was a few day after their first stake out together and ever since then, they had fallen into a comfortable dynamic. He’d tease her, she’d hit back, and vice versa.
The day that portrait was taken, Jake had done his very best to screw up as many takes as possible, making Amy as annoyed as possible. Under the title “SONG #1” (written in his painfully ugly handwriting), there were about seven of those discarded pictures attached to the page with what Amy recognized as some of the washi tapes from her stationary collection. In each one of them Jake had the silliest face imaginable and Amy had an increasing frown.
She rolled her eyes at the memory. It was okay, though. The next day she came in earlier and reorganized Jake’s desk. His absolute panic at the pristine conditions of his workplace was incredibly satisfying to Amy.
The song ended and Amy startled when she realized there was someone banging on the bathroom door.
“Amy?”
Rosa.
She pressed pause before the next song started playing.

Logo design and branding trends for 2020
June 28, 2020
Logo design and branding trends for 2020
Tumblr media
You have a brand new year 2020. With the dawn of the New Year, you have attractive sets of logo designs and branding themes. The logo designs fabulously unfold a mix of yesteryear themes with the brand new ones. You will be learning about some of the world’s best logo designs. Plus, the online guide also covers some of the fascinating branding trends for 2020. Let us move on to unveil each one of them:
A look at some of the world-famous logo designs for 2020:
3D gradients
3D gradients is a trend that is evolving with the latest 3D technology indeed. You can evolve and merge the latest 3D gradient to fit into the smartphone society. What is your understanding of the term ‘gradients?’
Gradients is an impressive way of converting a sober looking logo design into a flashy spectrum of hues. This can add energy, dynamism and value to your e-firm or virtual enterprise. Logo designers are therefore exploring the depths behind adding gradients. This way, you can lend a stunning 3D effect to your logo designs. You can look for tapered gradients. These are ones that start off from their fulcrum or center point going all the way to touch upon the contrasting set of shades. 3D gradient logos are tough to print but look fabulous on screens. Use gradients to create stunning 3D effects, shadows and depth like never before.
Throw-back logo designs
Expect to see the resurgence of throw back designs of logos that were used way back in the ‘80s. You can add unique aesthetics to the ‘80s based logo designs. For this, you must add a lot of chrome, neon and pixels to the logo prints. The glowing pocket rectangles can further add to the nostalgic effect of these designs. You can bring about the color in an unimaginable manner.
Plus, the throw-back logos add to the cool and retro effects too. Say for instance, you want to start a Music shop, why not include the image of a cassette rolling into action? Cassette collections and vintage arcade cabinet logos are becoming more and more popular. Joystick logos are also in trend for 2020.
Hand-drawn logos
Imperfection is the norm for today’s era. Hand-drawn logs are therefore comparable to ones that look raw and imperfect. But these logos lend a perfect touch to the originality of the firms depicting the same. These are more like sketched out pics with asymmetry lines, uneven patches, contour shading, pencil sketching, handwritten signatures and cross-hatching.
The logos are cool enough to gain momentum among web users who would love resonating with your firm. They can also associate you with the niche of products or services you plan bringing about. Raw and imperfect logos are getting grittier and brands continue to embrace the trend. These logos are chic, organic and home-grown too.
Logos with ultra-thin lines
For 2020, designers are bringing about newer innovations especially in the field of logo designing. Caricaturing the most unique logo designs act as the biggest USP for someone to strike the business with you for the very first time. This particular trend revolves around creating logos with ultra thin lines. You can make the lines spherical, square shaped or even rectangular.
