Over 38,000 Palestinians displaced in Gaza by Israeli airstrikes: UN
Tumblr media
International News The United Nations says over 38,000 Palestinians have been displaced in Gaza by Israeli airstrikes and more than 2,500 people have been made homeless because their houses were destroyed.
UN spokesman Stephane Dujarric said Monday those displaced have sought protection in 48 schools run by UNRWA, the U.N. agency for Palestinian Refugees.

Dujarric said 41 education facilities have been damaged according to U.N. staff on the ground. The power supply across Gaza has been reduced to six to eight hours per day, on average, with several feeder lines not functioning, he said.
That, in turn, disrupts healthcare provision and other basic services, including water, hygiene, and sanitation. He said the World Food Program has started providing emergency assistance for more than 51,000...Read more.

Please, if you have no knowledge on a certain topic, then refrain from making baseless claims based on “infographics” you saw on social media.
Social media has power, for good or for bad, just be more critical about what you post/share. You might think you’re “fighting for freedom” but all you do is incite a conflict even more, and by that, causing more blood to shed.
If you are not part of one of the actual sides of the conflict, you are not properly educated on the subject (and no, seeing staged and out of context videos/infographics on internet doesn’t count as being educated), and you are not willing to properly educate yourself on the subject, it is okay to just pray for peace or just shut up.
Some of you don’t mind it, because you sit leisurely at your homes and none of this really impacts your everyday lives. But people actually suffer because of the ignorance of people who don’t know shit, yet believe every post their “influencer”, who btw doesn’t know shit either, is posting.
Please, human lives are at risk, be more critical about what you post.
Just ask yourself :
Do I really know what is happening there ? Am I sure the post I’m sharing is fact-based ? Does my actions may aggravate the situation for one side or another?(As for the last question, by spreading lies - YES ! By spreading lies, you spread hate)
You should hold yourself accountable for what you share/post. Ignorance isn’t an excuse.

A tweet by Avi Mayer, the Managing Director of Global Communications at the American Jewish Committee (AJC), which reads:
“Kerem Shalom is the crossing through which humanitarian aid enters Gaza from Israel.
Israel opened the crossing today to allow trucks bearing fuel and aid to enter Gaza.
As the trucks were unloading their cargo, Hamas fired rockets at the crossing.
That’s all you need to know.”

Impunity from international sanctions is allowing Israel to create "horror" in Gaza, Hanan Ashrawi, a former top Palestinian official, has said.
"There's constant, constant shelling and bombing - by air, by sea, by land. You have tanks, warships, you have F-16s and so we have, so far, over 180 people killed, more than 50 of them children," she said.
"Whole families have been eradicated and destroyed," the 74-year old former top official in the Palestine Liberation Organisation and education minister said.
There were also killings in her home town, Ashrawi noted.
"There are demonstrations all the time, protest marches, and the Israelis shoot live ammunition - they've killed people and wounded many others," she said.
"This is in Ramallah. But there are over 200 protests happening in the West Bank, at almost every checkpoint, as well as the serious confrontations in Palestinian areas inside Israel," she added.
Ashrawi spoke amid the worst conflagration in the Arab-Israeli conflict since 2014.

I really believe in solidarity and standing together. But I need people to stop demanding especially Black women to speak up for every single topic in this world. People on my dash (Queer and Black woman who I follow mostly) have been attacked for not "speaking as passionately as you did during BLM protests". I feel like that is so inappropriate. Also I think to put the burden on this people is not fair. I am triggered once again because yet another person I follow was like leave me alone for a bit

it's more than inappropriate. and i bet it's usually sm woke white people who do that

White people have ALWAYS been on the top of the social hierarchy, they can't be oppressed. Using the "imagine if this was said about black people" argument is downright nasty.
Why can't we create equality without pushing one party down? Same thing with Feminism, with giving women more power, doesn't mean we have to take it away from men, right? So why do we have to be hateful towards one race to uplift the other?? I just don't get it yk, I'm not crying because of oppression because some 15 y/o saying "I hate all white people" obviously does not affect anyone. This isn't about the racial thing really, this is about the hypocrisy of the situation and how y'all blatantly state that "reverse racism" doesn't exist which implies that racism itself doesn't exist because it works against its whole definition.

Just a friendly reminder that:
• Pro-Israel does not equal anti-Palestine
• Pro-Israel does not equal Pro- Israeli government
• Anti- Hamas does not equal anti-Palestine
It’s easy to tell who is ignorant about these issues btw, so don’t try to hide behind tough yet insulting language.

Week 10: Digital Citizenship and Conflict
(Social Media Governance)
Tumblr media
Digital citizenship, a building block of the Internet, refers to a “person who has the knowledge and skills to effectively use digital technologies to communicate with others, participate in society and create and consume digital content” (Digital Technologies Hub, 2021). Being a digital citizen means correctly and safely utilising all aspects of the internet, including social media, and despite largely beneficial and positive uses of social media, it has also become a facilitator of online bullying, hate speech, and gaslighting by users. Gaslighting, originating from the 1944 film Gaslight, describes behaviour that works to "psychologically manipulate a person in order to erode their sense of self and sanity” (Gleeson, 2018). Cambridge English Dictionary outlines it as “the action of tricking or controlling someone by making them believe things that are not true, especially by suggesting that they may be mentally ill” (Cambridge Dictionary, 2018).
Gaslighting has come to the forefront of social media and been indoctrinated into day-to-day conversation following the move of third wave and intersectional feminism onto platforms such as Instagram, Twitter, and Tumblr. The development and traction of online movements such as #MeToo and #TimesUp has allowed for other internet users to gaslight those involved in the movements, often using common vernacular and stereotypes to degrade others, particularly women; “crazy ex-girlfriend”, the “bitches be crazy” or “psycho bitch”, the “hysterical woman” (Gleeson, 2018).
The internet and the realm of social media has allowed people to not only interact with people they know on a personal level but with strangers, giving them all the more opportunity to bully, harass and gaslight others. Some social media platforms, such as Tumblr, also offer anonymity in their sites, which often manifests in a negative way. Manospheres are a direct result of this sense of privacy and obscurity that some platforms provide. The idea of the manosphere is summarised by Marwick and Caplan; “When feminists and female public figures experience harassment, it often originates from members of a loose online network known as the manosphere, a set of blogs, podcasts, and forums comprised of pickup artists, men’s rights activists, anti-feminists, and fringe groups. While the particular beliefs of these groups may differ, many participants have adopted a common language.” (Marwick, A & Caplan, R, 2018).
It will be interesting to observe how social media and the internet adapt and change in an attempt to prevent and counteract gaslighting, bullying, and harassment in the future.

Image description: A series of ten tweets from Jeremy Slevin that read:
“As Jews we are told from a young age that our identities are intrinsically tied to the modern State of Israel. It is taught to us in Hebrew School, in services, and is a deeply held belief by many of our parents, grandparents and family members. It is reinforced by media and politicians who repeatedly link Jewish identity with the State of Israel. The flip side of this message is that criticism of Israel is a negation of our identity. Even if not explicitly anti-Semitic, the thinking goes, those who criticize Israel must be doing so because they harbor some anti-Semitic attitudes. This conflation of religious/communal identity with a far away nation state is reinforced constantly and repeatedly. Palestinians do not even factor into this story. When reality forces us to reckon with their existence, we are told they are terrorists—warmongers who hate the Jews and are violent by nature (this is Islamophobia btw). The story of the Nakba—the mass expulsion of Palestinians from their ancestral land in 1948–is left out entirely. 1948 is merely the year Israel gained independence. Who knew Palestinians were part of that story? Needless to say, the constant conflation of Jewish identity with one state’s politics is not Good for the Jews. It reduces the personal to the political. It strips Jews of the ability to define their own relationship with their identity. For non-Jews it signals that if you support Israeli policies, then you can’t be anti-Semitic and that if you are critical of Israeli policies you therefore hate the Jews, both of which are lies. It can be very difficult to unlearn.
For years I understood that Netanyahu and settlers were bad actors, but my sensors would go off when I heard people talk about boycotts or divestment. Israel may not be perfect , the thinking went, but grassroots efforts to change those policies *must be* antisemitic.
In truth, Israel is a state, like many others, founded on the displacement of others. Its Jewish exclusivity is predicated on the exclusion of millions who continue to live on that land.
To recognize that Israel is a state, like others, that oppresses and dispossess the powerless. And that the only way to end that oppression is to give those people equal rights and self-determination - just as we yearned for as Jews.“
End image description
