it's kinda sad really but based on the poll, not a lot of people know about luna snow, white fox, aero, wave, etc! which is a shame because, genuinely, they’re really interesting characters!
sure, some of them has only appeared in one series or doesn’t even have a solo run, but here’s a quick rundown of a couple of asian supes that i think you all should know and love because its aapi and im a proud asian <3
before i start, do read new agents of atlas!! there are a lot of east asian heroes there :)
Let's start...!
Luna Snow
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Seol Hee is a K-pop star who gains ice powers after a rather disastrous debut. In 4L1T, the group she’s in, she was dubbed as Luna (aka her idol name) which became her official hero name! Interestingly, she does occasionally save the world while juggling her idol life. Truly an icon. Also, fun fact! She has an official spotify and released songs so go stream!
See her in:
Marvel’s Future Fight - yes, she’s actually an original character for the game. a few of them are!
Future Fight Firsts - a marvel comic about a few future fight original characters! this comic is going to appear a lot lol
New Agents of Atlas
Tiger Division
White Fox
Tumblr media Tumblr media
As the last descendant of the Kumiho, an ancient Korean yokai, she was first forced to hide her true nature to the world. After her mother’s death, Ami went to live with her uncle and aunt and enrolled into a human high school. This causes her to find out about the evils that killed her mother and, while saving her friend, she defeated them. Afterwards, Ami was invited by a National Intelligence Service agent to join the agency.

Lin Lie
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Lin Lie was a young man from Shanghai when his father gave him the sword of Fu Xi. The mystical sword dispels demons and its goal is to stop Chiyou from re-emerging. After several fuck ups in DODS: White Fox, the sword shattered and Lie was tossed into a cliff. We learn after a while that he did not die, in fact he got revived by the chi of Shou-Lao which grants him the Iron Fist.
See him in:

Iron Fist (2020)
A.X.E: Iron Fist
Pearl Pangan
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Pearl Pangan grew up by the beach on Mactan Island in Cebu, Philippines. She loved the sea and became a really good swimmer, having the potential to win the Olympics. However, obstacles in life turned her aside from that path. She was approached by AlonTech who used Pearl’s swimming abilities to conduct experiments on her. AlonTech was eventually attacked by the Triumph Division and during this attack, Pearl was exposed to several unknown energies which granted her the ability to control water.

Marvel Voices Infinity Comics issue 50
Dan Bi
(ive reached the photo max whopsie)
Dan Bi is the daughter of an antique shop owner. One day after Tae Kwon Do class, she returned home to see her father's shop in ruins, her father nowhere to be found. Bounty hunters entered the building and hearing them, she hid under a bed, finding the mask that contained Io. On the quest to search for her father, Dan Bi went after the buyer of an artefact, leading her to Jimmy Woo, who recruited her into the New Agents of Atlas. Keep in mind she’s like 11 or something.

Once again, to celebrate this awesome day, I thought I'd give another shout-out to some more of those wonderful ladies that I alove and admire, both those who hve inspired me for a while now, and those that I just recently discovered ...
Tumblr media
IMAN VELLANI. Oh my sweet girl! :3 Exploding onto the scene thanks to the recent acclaimed hit/fan favourite that was the Disney/Marvel Ms. Marvel streaming show, the most adorable geek girl in ALL THE WORLD really got a major, much deserved profile boost (regardless of the problems) thanks to her co-starring return to the role of super-popular young Marvel superhero Kamala Khan in The Marvels. She's a genuine absolute SWEETHEART and she deserves all the success that's surely coming to her.
Tumblr media
GIDEON NAV & HARROWHARK NONAGESIMUS. Yup, I have FINALLY gotten round to reading Tamsyn Muir's ridiculously popular sci-fi fntasy novel series The Locked Tomb! It's still early days, I'm only on Gideon the Ninth, but I am ALREADY falling head over heels in love with the story's central duo, the reluctant warrior Gideon, a snarky oversized golden retriever of a woman, and her "hated" charge, Harrow, the scheming, overly-ambitious scion to an ancient clan of intergalactic necromancers, who's a metaphorical vicious little soaked ferret. I love them, they're so adorably dysfunctional ...
Tumblr media
AWKWAFINA. For me, one of the funniest people around, this musician, comedian and actress deserves every ounce of success she's earned for herself. I mostly know her for her acting, having been a fan ever since she was in Ocean's 8, since showing up in a raft of great roles in the likes of Shang-Chi & the Legend of the Ten Rings, Raya & the Last Dragon, Crazy Rich Asians and Swan Song, although she's REALLY hitting her stride now, showing up in REALLY BIG stuff like Renfield, Quiz L\ady and, now, the incoming (and long-awaited) Kung Fu Panda 4.
Tumblr media
TATIANA SUAREZ. Perhaps the most incredible sportswoman I have come across in a good long while, this one is a TRUE INSPIRATION REVELATION. A strong up-and-coming contender for UFC World Champion, she's been through SO MUCH in her life to get where she is now, having had her teenage dreams of being an Olympic Gold Medal wrestler dashed after an accident during training led to the discovery of a burgeoning case of thyroid cancer. Fighting off the condition, she then fought her way back after embracing judo and then mixed martial arts, before AGAIN suffering a debilitating neck injury which NEARLY ended her sporting career again, forcing her to take another long-term hiatus to get back into fighting shape ... just as COVID hit. Now she's back again, fighting fit and better than ever, hungry for that next chance and looking like she's definitely gonna get it this time ...
Tumblr media
SINEAD O'CONNOR. The last 13 months have been really tough, we've had to say goodbye to some truly wonderful people, but one in particular REALLY HURT. The music industry lost a true GEM with the passing of this genuine GODDESS, the Irish singer-songwriter best known for her INSANELY popular cover of Prince's Nothing Compares 2 U, although those in the know recognise that she was ONE HELL of a force nature in her own right, courting controversy throughout her career for her outspoken religious and political views. She NEVER backed down on what she believed, and earned my undying respect and admiration for it.
Tumblr media
FLORENCE PUGH. A completely amazing young actress who's had a trily ASTOUNDING rise to fame in recent years, I've be a fan of Flo's ever since she broke out in a MASSIVE WAY in the twisted psychological drama Lady Macbeth. She's blown us all away since, lighting up the screen in the likes of midsommar, Don't Worry Darling, Oppenheimer and, now, Dune, Part Two, but now, for me she will ALWAYS be Yelena Belova, the true successor to the MCU's Black Widow mantle.
Tumblr media
MIZU. One of my favourite female characters of the past year (although I'm sure she would balk at actually bringing up her gender), the titular lead protagonist of Netflix' wild runaway success new animated series Blue Eye Samurai is a genuinely fascinating and intoxivating character, who prompts profound debate about gender roles and personal identity while kicking arse in SPECTACULAR FASHION indeed in feudal Japan.
Tumblr media
TEYONAH PARRIS. Definitely one of THE MOST AMAZING African American actresses coming up right now, this young lady is definitely earning her breakout star status. Having come up through sterling turns in the likes of Dear White People, Chi-Raq, If Beale Street Could Talk and Candyman, before finally making good on all that promise with high profile lead turns in THey Cloned Tyrone and her ongoing role as MCU superhero MOnica Rambeau/Photon in Wandavision and The Marvels.
Tumblr media
BILLIE EILISH. What do I REALLY need to say about one of the most popular and astoundingly unique musical artists of the moment? Ever since her breakthrough at just THIRTEEN YEARS OLD with her wildly successful first single, Ocean Eyes, which became a massive runaway smash on Youtube, this incredibly talented young singer songwriter has consistently impressed with ever release, entirely deserving her immense success with an amazing debut EP and two subsequently BRILLIANT albums. She keeps going from strength to strength, and at just 22 years old is only just BEGINNING what's sure to be a MONSTER of a career ...
Tumblr media
KITTY O'NEIL. A true legend in cinema, even though most of us have NEVER actually seen her face, this little lady was one of the GREATEST stuntwomen and racers of all time, and a MASSIVE inspiration throughout her life as well. Despite going deaf due to illness during childhood, Kitty still went on to become a record-breaking racing driver and professional stunt performer, probably best known for having doubled Linda Cart in Wonder Woman and Lyndsey Wagner in The Bionic Woman. It's a genuine mystery why Hollywood hasn't made a biopic about her yet ...
Tumblr media
HOLGA KILGORE. Probably my ABSOLUTE favourite fictional female protagonist of 2023, the badass barbarian lady from Dungeons & Dragons: Honor Among Thieves was a pure, unapologetic JOY, thanks in no small part to a wonderfully game turn from Michelle Rodriguez. Holga's just an absolute sweetheart, fully capable of decimating a whole room full of big, dangerous men with her bare hands without ever losing her gentle kindness, simple, honest innocence and unswerving loyalty. TRULY the MVP warrior tank any adventuring party wants in their corner ...
Tumblr media
SIOUXSIE SIOUX. Truly one of alternative rock's true, all time GOATs, the lead singer of one of goth's greatest and most important bands, Siouxsie & the Banshees, is a singular master of haunting, ethereal vocals and a genuine style ICON who lent her look and manner to a whole GENERATION of scary young women ...
Tumblr media
SABINE WREN & SHIN HATI. While my favourite Star Wars offering of 2023, the opening season of the Ahsoka series, was, all round, just SO GREAT for me, there was one particular element that just stuck with me above ANYTHING ELSE - the season-long rivalry between Ahsoka's troubled Mndalorian apprentice Sabine and Dark Jedi student Shin. They raged, continuously tried to kill each other and endlessly traded smouldering looks of hate that bordered on OBSESSION ... all while genuinely SIMMERING with barely restrained sexual tension. They made the whole fandom FERAL, myself includced. #wolfwren indeed ...
Tumblr media
BRODY DALLE. And last, but BY NO MEANS LEAST, a little more personal self-indulgience ith one of my greatest rock-fan super crushes, namely the awesome Aussie lead singer/guitarist of supercool punk bands the Distillers and Spinnerette. Still rocking her iconic status to this day, she remains a genuine inspiration ...

Do you know all of Sun Wukong's children? I understand that King Paramita is Lady Iron Fan's son with Wukong(?). and that Yuebei Xing and her brothers are maybe children of Taiyin xing (the theory). Obviously I understand that they are not like something canon, however, it is interesting to know about them.
I can’t say that I do know every iteration that Wukong has kids but I can try to make a list of what I got at least! There are the non-canon kids of Sun Wukong that I know of at least right now. I'm sure there is more but these are the ones I know from media at the moment.
A Supplement to the Journey to the West (1640) 西遊補 (this is just a dream) Paramita 4 other unnamed sons
Journey to the South (1570) 南遊記 (unnamed partner) Jidu Luohou Yuebei Xing
Later Journey to the West (17th-century) 後西遊記 Sun Luzhen (adopted)
Marvel vs. Capcom 2: New Age of Heroes (2000) マーヴル VS. カプコン 2 Sonson
Westward Journey Online II (2002) 大话西游2经典版 Mind Monkey (unintentionally contributed to new Rock Monkey)
High School DxD (2008) ハイスクールD×D Bikou
The Monkey King's Daughter (2009) Meilin Cheng
New Journey to the West: Unexpected Jingxi (2017) 新西游之意外晶喜 Unborn child (with White Bone spirit) (also might not be his)
Adventure in Journey to the West (2018)大闹西游 Sun Wuyuan (disciple, but like it's obvious he adopted)
God of High School (2020) 갓 오브 하이 스쿨 Park Taejin (adopted)
DC Festival of Heroes: The Asian Superhero Celebration #1 (2021) Sun Marcus (hair clone treated as child)
The Chronicles of the Ranger (2021) 游侠战纪 Hou Mo (stone monkey, hard to say if direct descendant)
Monkey King (2022) 悟·空 Sun Xiaosheng (disciple, might be adopted)
American Born Chinese(2023) Sun Wei-Chen
Honorary mentions:
Monkey King: Hero Is Back (2015) 西遊記之大聖歸來 Jiang Liu'er Anan
My Dad is Monkey King (2021) 我的爸爸是齐天大圣 Li Yiyi (this is more symbolic than real dad)
Lego Monkie Kid (2021) 悟空小侠 Qi Xiaotian / MK (stone monkey, possibly related)
So this is NOT ALL of the children I'm sure but I'm sure as I keep posting media that the list with increase!

i don't know if you've already made a post about this but what comic(s) do you think have the best characterisation of cassandra cain and dick grayson?
My instinctive response to this ask was to just answer "Prodigal and Batgirl (2000)" and be on my way. Instead, I took a little bit more time to think about what my answer should be and what information might be useful to people looking for comics featuring a well-characterized Dick and Cass. So, with that said:
Dick:
Robin: Year One (2000)
New Teen Titans/Tales of the Teen Titans (1980 & 1984)
Batman: Year Three (1989)
Batman: Prodigal (1997)
Titans Vol. 1 (1999)
Nightwing/Birds of Prey: The Hunt for Oracle (2000)
Gotham Knights (2000) #1-12
Peter Tomasi's run on Nightwing (1996)
Batman: The Black Mirror (2010)
Batman: Gates of Gotham (2011)
Listen. All of these comics have their flaws. Many of them feature dated and occasionally poor treatment of various characters/social issues. I'm still holding a grudge against Devin Grayson for her Nightwing run and will until the end of time, and thus the inclusion of Titans Vol. 1 and her first Gotham Knights arcs might seem a bit odd. But I also think this is a pretty solid list of comics that portray Dick in ways that feel consistent and faithful to his core characterization; they're also some of the comics that feature Dick at his best.
Cass:
Batgirl (2000): specifically the Puckett/Scott run (#1-37) and the Gabrych run (#38 & #58-73)
Bruce Wayne: Murderer?/Fugitive (2003)
Gates of Gotham (2011)
Tynion's run on Detective Comics (2016)
Batman and the Outsiders (2019)
Batgirl Vol. 1 was and continues to be the golden standard of how to portray Cass. She's never reached those heights again. Other comics featuring Cass wish they were Batgirl Vol. 1, but it was a true "lightning in a bottle" run that has yet to be replicated. That being said: Murderer/Fugitive (which takes place during Cass's Batgirl run) is great, and Gates of Gotham features the only solid pre-reboot Cass characterization post-Evil Cass arc.
Post-Flashpoint!Cass is a bit of a different animal, but within the context and limitations placed on her appearances until Dan Didio's departure from DC in 2020, she's best characterized and treated in Detective Comics Rebirth and Batman and the Outsiders.
Honorable mentions: these comics either weren't quite on the same level of "good characterization" to make the list or just didn't highlight the character as much as they could have, but I still really like what the creative team did with them in the space they were given:
Dick: Nightwing (1996) #6 (for being a fun depiction of Dick and Tim's early-days relationship), Teen Titans (2003) #6 (great characterization of Dick. So-so characterization of...several other characters), The Resurrection of Ra's Al Ghul (I love Dick's characterization here, and it's one of my favorite Bat books, but he's just not in it all that much), and Batman & Robin (2009), which...I'll get into my complicated feelings about Morrison's B&R run some other time, but generally: I like Dick's characterization in this comic a lot in isolation. It becomes much more difficult to square, however, when you take everything else going on during the Reborn era into account.
Cass: Mariko Tamaki's Shadows of the Bat: The Tower (2021) event and "Sounds" short from the DC Asian Superhero Celebration (2021) anthology. They're nice and have some great Cass moments, but they're either too short (Sounds) or too focused on other characters/the overall plot (The Tower) to truly do her justice.

Who is Connor Hawke? - A Reading Guide
Tumblr media
Connor Hawke is the son of Oliver Queen and Sandra "Moonday" Hawke. He is best known for his role as the Green Arrow, taking on the mantle upon his father's death and continuing as the Green Arrow after his resurrection. Connor was raised by his mother, and struggled in school due to being bullied for being mixed race (his mother is Black and Korean and his father is white). At around age thirteen Connor was able to talk his mother into letting him move to a Buddhist Ashram that his father had once stayed at, and there Connor entered the care of Master Jansen, learned martial arts and archery, and became a Buddhist monk. It was at the Ashram that Connor decided to continue the Green Arrow legacy. While serving as the Green Arrow, Connor teamed up with the Green Lantern Kyle Rayner and the Flash Wally West, Robin Tim Drake, Cassandra Cain, and the Justice League.
While Connor is most known for his connection to the Arrow family, as this was what was focused on most heavily in Green Arrow Vol. 3- it is important to remember Connor has strong connections outside of the family as highlighted in Green Arrow Vol. 2! These characters include: Sandra "Moonday" Hawke, Nathan Hawke (Connor's "Gran"), Mastern Jansen, Eddie Fyers, Kyle Rayner, Wally West (and his wife Linda), Tim Drake, and Cassandra Cain!
As of June 2022, Connor has been confirmed as asexual, which solidifies his ace coding from both Green Arrow Vol. 2 and 3!
Reading list with RCO links under the cut!
Only three comics will be listed after the N52 because they are the only three that give us anything resembling an in character Connor Hawke- I will not now nor ever include Robin (2021) on this list.

i'm currently thinking about how, for so long, you couldn't be an asian on the screen unless you were a side character that was pretty much built on stereotypes. and there are standout asian actors, but i'm a teenager so legends who made a name for themselves are kinda before my time. but both michelle yeoh and ke huy quan are the embodiment of not giving up on your dreams. even if it takes a while, you're time will come, and in a way that honors yourself. every time i see another post or edit of their oscar wins, i tear up.
i didn't grow up watching asians on tv. my only likeness as a child used to be mulan, but people at school used to tell me i couldn't just pick her as my favorite disney movie because she's asian (which, kids are dumb and that reasoning is stupid and besides the fact the she was the only representation kid-me had, mulan had a great storyline and message and characters and soundtrack and it was and still is a really great movie). i remember seeing characters like mike chang from glee on tv, but he was a character always pushed to the side, and those shows always had a way of just mocking and reaffirming stereotypes.
i think about how sometimes the only space for asian women was so that they could be sexualized, or how there was even less room for asian men on the screen unless they fit a certain look. how asians had to become an image to get their space.
and in recent years, the representation for asians has increased, and i'm so thankful. i wish i had that when i was younger, but i'm glad to have it now. with movies like shang chi or crazy rich asians, we get to see how respecting and celebrating culture is significant, but it's also not an asian's entire identity. how we are still people with stories that deserve to have main characters.
i'm so happy that eeaao gave michelle yeoh and ke huy quan their space. how this door opened for them and asians to be seen and respected. how they inspire people to dream big. how it feels possible for big dreams to really and truly happen.
when i was a little girl, i was obsessed with superheroes, which led me to my obsession with the tv show agents of shield. and i adored melinda may, played by ming na wen, who was a bad*ss character. and her character revolved not around her culture (although culture was not ignored) but how even without it she is still a character with a complex history and development and personality.
it's nice to be living and experiencing an era where asians are getting their recognition. representation is so important because it reaches so many people and lets them know that somewhere out there, achieving the dream, even for someone who looks like us, is within our reach.
we finally get to exist in the mainstream. and for that, my inner child is so grateful.

Biden’s superpower is that he keeps getting opponents to underestimate him.
He called Putin’s bluff in Ukraine. And even before the invasion began the White House allowed the declassification of intelligence which revealed Russian plans to stage a fake incident (like the 1939 Gleiwitz incident) to justify Putin’s invasion.
Republicans went into the debt ceiling negotiations believing too much of their own propaganda about Biden. in the end, close to nobody is concluding that Speaker Kevin McCarthy came out ahead on this deal.
Edward Luce wrote at The Financial Times (archived)...
Rarely in the history of fiscal brinkmanship has so much noise been made by so many Republicans with so little to show for it. The result is a win for Biden that prudence stops him from celebrating.
[ ... ]
McCarthy, along with many others, serially underestimates Biden. In spite of being owned by the nonagenarian Rupert Murdoch, Fox News and its imitators are obsessed with the octogenarian Biden’s alleged senility. “Republicans got outsmarted by a president who can’t find his pants,” tweeted Nancy Mace, a Republican lawmaker who said she will vote against the deal.
In practice, Biden played the game of chicken well. He took it seriously by flying home early from his Asian trip in mid-May. In the interests of stopping a default, he resisted the temptation to call his opponents pyromaniacs. Biden’s age and limited energy may even have helped. It is useful to have a calm temperament in the midst of a crisis.
In an age of superhero action films, having a calm and measured temperament is often overlooked as an advantage.

Sorry if this is a bad question or more likely just hopeless. I’ve been trying to find a good Connor Hawke comic to read (first found out about him in Damian’s Robin solo and he and Rose were the only two things I liked besides the Robin chase but I’m a bat brat) and I’ve only read the Silver Monkey story and as I’m not a fan of Oliver Green at all (my exposure to him has in no way been positive) and I HATE Dixon and I know he’s the main writer for Connor, but I had to drop the Tim solo because of his obvious, I guess bigotry would be the right word to use here, but he is one of the three writers I refuse to let myself read anymore to try and keep my blood pressure low. Are there any Connor stories or series that exist outside of those parameters to read because I’m having 0 luck. I’m also not sure if you’re a fan of Mia or Emilio or have any go-to stories for them, but I know nothing about them and I’d like to change that if at all possible.
i understand, i do i do. while i think dixon is capable of good character writing, and he did manage to do it in connor's run, i also understand his very very obvious politics shine through all the time and it gets tiresome (at one point in his ga run he manages to write OLIVER QUEEN "both sides"ing literal nazis that he and hal fought in GL/GA). here's the best i can do for recs outside of dixon (though few and far between)
Before i start, i do wanna clarify that his character in robin is. well. pretty different from his actual pre-established character. I'm not saying you won't like him, and im genuinely begging you to give him a shot, but if youre looking for the snarky brawler type, you might be a lil thrown by the polite buddhist monk you're gonna get.
you are in luck, as his first few appearances were by kelley puckett, so if you havent already read GA vol. 2 #0, do that first! #91 and #92 are also by puckett until dixon takes over for #93, so read those if you dont mind just stopping in the middle of an arc, otherwise avoid.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
now this next rec IS 1/3 written by dixon but if you can get through it, the crossover connor has with wally and kyle is enjoyable, thats Green Lantern Vol. 3 #96, GA Vol. 2 #130, and The Flash Vol. 2 #135
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Connor's JLA run! JLA Vol. 1 #8-#15, #8 and #9 are specifically about connor saving and joining the league, the rest of the issues just feature him in a team setting, as, well, its the league.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
if you want to read mia as well, read Green Arrow: Quiver (GA Vol. 3 #1-#10), Connor plays an important role but its almost entirely in the very last issue, and it's more about Ollie's role dynamic with him than anything else, so just read that if it tickles your fancy.
Tumblr media
I wish i could recommend more of GA Vol. 3 for connor, unfortunately he's pretty fucking sidelined, and for every good moment theres 2 bad ones. (immediately after quiver he is shot and put in a coma for an arc, somehow this isnt the last time this happens.) Though i do recommend #11, and i think #21 is a good issue to read for ollie and him, but it also includes a pretty huge retcon to Connor and Ollie's past
Other than those, he has One-shots in Green Arrow 80th Anniversary 100-Page Super Spectacular: "One", DC Pride 2022: "Think Of Me", and DC Festival of Heroes: The Asian Superhero Celebration: "Hawke & Kong"
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
to answer your second question, my URL aint lesbianspeedy for nothin! Mia is what i breathe and bleed, my recs for her are here!
as for Emi, your best bets are Green Arrow Vol. 5 #18-#20, #22, #28-#34 for her origin (though read N52 green arrow at your own risk, even i havent properly read these), Green Arrow Vol. 6 #1-#7 (this may feel like a completely new character, i'm sorry, dc has a angsty characterisation problem, if you enjoy either of these characterisations, i'd recommend you keep reading said runs past my specific recs for more issues with her!) and Stargirl Spring Break Special + Stargirl: The Lost Children #1-#6

A Thought
there is a Real Possibility i may still have my "lian calling bruce 'Uncle Batman'" moment (at least in prime earth continuity)
Tumblr media
batman plus arsenal (1999)
she's currently selina kyle's sidekick/protégé
Tumblr media Tumblr media
catwoman (2018) #35 / dc festival of heroes: asian superhero celebration (2021) #1
plus roy and jason are looking for her
Tumblr media
dark crisis (2022) #3
lian has TWO concrete connections to bruce, and therefore there is a real possibility that she interacts with him in canon
and i know it's not gonna be as cute as <5 y/o pre-n52 lian doing that bc she's obviously older now, bUT GODDAMNIT I DESERVE TO SEE BRUCE'S REACTION TO A VIGILANTE CHILD CALLING HIM "UNCLE BATMAN"
AGE BE DAMNED!!!

2022 Year in Review
Tumblr media
2022 was a fascinating year for the character of Cassandra Cain. Like the years prior, the year built off creators who do adore the character. So let's look back at 2022 for Cass.
To start this was the first complete year that the character had an ongoing shared with two other characters in Batgirls. While the covers have been utter gold the story themselves has been divided the fanbase with the portrayal of the three Batgirls involved.
For me, my problems with the book is just the way to incoporate Babs into the series. Make her being Batgirl anytime in the series a MOMENT. Let her flourish as Oracle more here while allowing new fans to open to Cass/Steph as the Batgirls.
Cass has been somewhat coincidental with a character arc compared to say Steph/Babs. She continues to make strides trying to overcome her reading disability (thanks to Basil and Babs).
Tumblr media
In truth, the only real hiccup for her character progression was this month's issue (#13) with Lady Shiva. The relationship between the two is always complicated. However, I feel it's forgotten the reasons why Cass/Steph bonded so well together. Their fathers are both monsters.
Tumblr media
Lady Shiva and Cass is untapped potential. Instead of the usual "murder mom" cliche tropes that we see with Red Arrow/Shado, Lian/Cheshire, and Talia/Damian I truly feel there is an opening here for the two to be different and respective toward one another.
Likewise, Shiva escaping the trap of being stuck in this dragonlady trope she's been stuck in since the 90s (with Simone, Rucka, Puckett, Hill, and Taylor) being the few who broke those shackles put upon the character.
That is why I hope for 2023 that DC doesn't falter into this simplistic trap. Going for the "troubled" story with the character in Hush along with Young Justice. Focusing on this monster not digging into the layers this character has to give.
Tumblr media
That said, Batgirls while having a bumpy start really got going with #9. The writers felt more comfortable with all the characters involved and it wasn't burden to any of the trio.
All I ask for 2023 is ironing out the rogues the Batgirls creators give a few more pathos along with a better motives to for the evils that they do to the city. I feel there's still potential for some of these newbies.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
But in truth I want the return of this bastard. David Cain needs to return. While I did love the dimensions he had in Batgirl Vol. 1. I feel maybe a leap into some hard villainy is needed for the character. A fear of him going "soft" due to accidentally loving his daughter.
Tumblr media
Or continue on with a "twisted" variant of his love for Cass theme. Something at least.
While Batgirls was middling, Cass found better more memorable appearances outside said ongoing in other places. Some more surprising then others.
I think the two biggest places of these was in Joker ongoing by James Tynion IV that concluded this year and Batman One Bad Day: Two-Face #1.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Both characterizations gave us a more mature Cass (if the younger version in Batgirls scared off longtime readers). One could feel the more "everything is canon" pathos DC started in 2020 with these appearances of Cass here.
This is a Cass that you know can drop someone easily and holds back purposely. She's scary, and it's nice seeing her interacting with characters she hasn't (in canon) for years.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
In truth though writer Mariko Tamaki spent most of 2022 shoe-horning Cass into anything Bat-related she wrote this year. I'm enterally 🙏for th at.
Continuing off the story she wrote of the character in 2021's DC Festival of Heroes: The Asian Superhero Celebration #1.
Tamaki shows in the various appearances (mostly Tec) how she gets Cass (even if it was kind of funny seeing artists drawing various forms of Cass's costume in these issues).
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
But these weren't the only places Cass showed up in. She was in the "old stand bys" Batman, Nightwing, Robin (Damian and Tim's), and Batman: Urban Legends (never forgetting that page. NEVER because it has many layers to it).
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
But we had other places you'd never expect Cass in. We had her in the Flash (I still can't believe we got that) and--- SCOOBY DOO?!
Yeah, that is something I wasn't expecting. 😮
Tumblr media Tumblr media
But these are nice fun little appearances. Though I feel her biggest "guest spot" other than Batman was here. Which allowed many answers to Jason being the "greatest fighter" of the Bat-Family from Task Force Z.
Tumblr media
Though personally I found the appearance "alright". Nothing like Tamaki or Tynion's.
But that was all the tip of the Cass iceberg as she appeared in stuff outside the main comics too. DCeased continues to be a place where I never thought in my wildest imaginations I ever see a Cass like this. Nor ever getting a solo cover of the character (coming next month).
Tumblr media
Dark Knights of Steel was the sneakiest Cass appearance ever as I didn't even realize it until someone said, "No she's in the issue." Tom Taylor is such a sneak cause we all now are hype for when she's gonna cut loose.
Tumblr media
Then there's Batman: Wayne Family Adventures which gives us SOOO much Cass and an absolute BANGER of a story arc with the character earlier this year.
Tumblr media
Probably the most disappointing multiverse Cass appearance was DC vs. Vampires. It started off strong making you think (oh hey Cass has a role in this and OH SHE'S ALIVE) before the second half came in July and whatever progress we had earlier fell off.
Tumblr media
But I'll be frank, while DC vs. Vampires was disappointing it was nowhere near the car crash that was Future State Gotham #15-18, which concluded it's alternate future story of Gotham.
Tumblr media
This story was a dumpster fire. Probably the worst Batman story of the year and I feel like only a few of us know of its crazy ass tale it gave us. I'm still in shock how everyone was wasted in this ongoing save Jason and Talia.
Jace the freaking co-star of this ongoing comic did NOTHING in that final arc save job and hard to everyone.  Everyone else in the family was equally was a waste and-- if you didn't hate Dick Grayson in Batgirls #7-8 you'll loathe him so much here.
Literally me the entire time reading this arc on Dick.
Tumblr media
Quite possibly one of the worst stories Cass was ever involved in. I hate it was so utterly predictable in that regard for her entire appearance in the story.
Then there's the real surprise. The surprise NO ONE saw coming. Bat Wheels. Cassandra Cain is in another cartoon. One aimed at an even younger audience.
Tumblr media
Though her costume has allusions to Babs and is kidified. The character is there. We haven't gotten much with the character (three episodes), but she's something else when on.
Some have said she isn't Cass, but other than the costume you can't really say much else because there isn't much layers to the character here save girl teen. But the last episode she appeared in facing off against Harley.
There was a tease to the Batgirl moniker being a legacy role and Cass wasn't living up to snuff. It got under her skin (much like the entire episode Bibi was bullied by Jestah).
Tumblr media
Both overcoming the bullying.  It was a really fun episode. I truly hope for a bit more Bibi centric episodes cause that means more Cass. 😋
Young Justice also had Cass but felt more padding characterization that should've been there to begin with. Such as this version of Cass knowing sign language to talk now.
Tumblr media
Likewise on the actual show she appeared at Conner/M'ggan's wedding with Babs and okay, if we have a Season 5 she's gotta be Batgirl in it right? RIGHT?!
Tumblr media
But yeah, I kind of wish we got the sign language knowledge in her arc from last year. But again, those episodes were stacked, but again that could've saved Artemis some time yelling at Cass's motives in part 2.
Tumblr media
All and all, this was another stellar year for Cass. I think the only real "bumps" was #7-8 in Batgirls, Future State: Gotham (which most forgot but I will NEVER FORGET), and DC vs. Vampires being so-- lackluster.
Other than that we got MORE Cass merch with TWO official shirts celebrating AAPI (Audrey Mok for Batgirls aka the pic I started this all with and Jen Bartel on Nightwing).
Tumblr media
NOW... If only 2023 gave us some figures or statues. *glares at McFarlane*
Tumblr media
And so... #CAINAISSANCE2022 ends with hope. Here's to #CAINAISSANCE2023 continuing the highs started three years ago. So far, it appears we will. Batgirls #14 next month (Cass focused silent issue) and so much more to come it seems.
