Now that I am mostly over the Absolutely Feral stage of my Radiant Emperor Obsession and can think again, I want to do a proper write up on how the series handles colonialism. I need to get my sources together and make it all pretty and stuff, but the gist of it is this.

I actually really respect SPC for not making it A Thing. Like, the colonialism is an inherent part of the serting, and a lot of important moments hinge around it, but there's also a pretty clear refusal by the author to turn it into A Statement. I think they do a really good job of walking the fine line between aknowledging it and making it clear that its an important part of the setting, without turning the book into a political thesis on Why Bad Actually.

I think a lot of fantasy authors that frankly have no business making their books into political science treatises try to be super philosophical about it, and inevitably have almost all their points ring flat bc the main character almost always ends up perpetuating the system they spent the whole book critiquing. The classic example being, of course, "We've destroyed The Evil Empire! We will now replace it with The Good Empire, which is functionally identical to The Evil Empire except Good bc our Main Character is in charge! This will totally change the systemic issues we've spent the last three million words exploring! How? Don't worry about it, absolute power only corrupts you if you're A Bad Person!" (atla. atla i am looking at you. my love for you does not mean I am letting you off the hook.)

The Radiant Emperor books interact with and aknowledge the colonialism. The empire canonically falls at least in part because of one guy's willfull ignorance of the differences between his culture and that of two of the people he loves the most, because his culture supercedes theirs to the point where he does not even consider the posibility of this difference truly existing as a real-life power imbalance. And still, these books are not about that! That is not the main theme! It is important. It is handled pretty well, it is aknowledged, and it is not The Point. I really appreciate that more understated approach that SPC takes, because ironically by refusing to partake in dramatic philosophical grandstanding the media often ends up making way better and more nuanced points, because then their point actually fits into the story they are trying to tell.

I don't personally ship lawlight, I just like all the stuff people make for it (plus whatever those two have going on, even if it isn't strictly romantic, definitely isn't like normal either), but that aside, I suppose I think Light, or maybe both. The two probably wouldn't have met if not for the Kira case, and I think L thoroughly enjoys their little cat and mouse game, and the Kira investigation certainly allowed different parts of Light to shine through (namely the more uh "morally unique" parts), but I don't really think Kira is enough of a person for L to be in love with.

Obviously smarter people than I have spoken on this, but if anything I see the Kira persona as something Light created to try and wall off being a murderer from his home life or being a top student, etc. and the two aren't separate people outside of Light Yagami's brain, because he struggles (or doesn't want to) conceive of the fact that he could contain both, also because that allows him to reason that Light Yagami isn't a serial killer, Kira is, different person. I think L might find it interesting that that's how Light has chosen to cope, but yeah, I don't think he'd just be in love with Kira.

It's a good question that I'm happy to answer! It just makes me mad.... I sincerely hate the wording of "prey" being used to describe her.

SHE IS A VICTIM! THAT DOES NOT MEAN SHE IS "PREY"!

I can...see how people in ancient times may have used that word and still meant it in how she is a victim... but modern-day English-speaking people calling her that??? (considering how in different languages the word "prey" could have different meanings.) I'll just say that as someone who has been "prey" herself at one point, I REALLY hate that word as a descriptor. Just say victim or survivor. 👍

Honestly to call ANY victim "prey" is so fucked up. "Prey" to me, feels like "it's meant to happen." "Prey" are part of the food chain and so that's what happens. And to compare that to abduction and SA? Almost as if "that's our place"? It also kind of implies something being "eaten" or killed... Helen SURVIVES. She's traumatized and definitely needs healing and support but it's not like she can't find joy or peace ever again. Prey just feels so fucking gross.

Also, if someone calls victims "prey", I hope they know that Moose, Elk, Boars, Bovine, ZEBRAS, etc. are technically "prey". And these are VERY aggressive animals while still being "prey" for some other animals. And also that doesn't mean that "Oh, they're powerful! Clearly they should've been able to stop it." That's victim blaming :P

She is a clever, determined, caring woman who was ripped from her home for YEARS because Paris was a dipshit who decided he needed the prettiest woman in the world despite already having a wife. He didn't care about the fact that Helen didn't want to be there and was already married. He is so selfish that he will not let her go back even when THOUSANDS have died in the war! EVEN HIS BROTHER HECTOR AND PRIAM DO NOT BLAME HER! Granted, we do not know if Aphrodite would have let him undo their deal of "I want the prettiest woman" if he DID end up feeling bad for Helen and he wished to let her go home (I doubt it based on his personality though).

You also have no idea about the political implications that would have happened if she DID kill Paris. I've noticed some similarities between xiyao and ruoyao in terms of dynamics, like the open respect to jgy. As someone who likes both, you think there really are things that overlap there? If so, what would be the main difference?

Well anon, I most certainly see what you mean!

I think that with both ships, the fact that they are the ones who show the most unconditional respect and support towards MY/JGY is certainly a thing they have in common.

The fun part comes when you notice they are pretty much opposite sides of the same coin in this regard.

First there's xiyao, which we are all familiar with. LXC is the one to constantly stand by JGY and rush to his defense if needed, even gave him the benefit of the doubt until hard irrefutable evidence was provided. LXC believed in JGY's goodness despite what the entire world claimed, but the thing is that... eventually he couldn't, because there were parts of JGY that he didn't know. As much as he loved his A-Yao, his A-Yao was never truly honest and fully himself with him.

Now I totally believe this resulted from JGY's want to keep at least this part of his life untained by the crimes he committed, knowing perfectly well that he would lose LXC's love if he was ever to discover those. Not as part of an evil manipulative scheme, but well, the very human need to be loved and fearing judgment for things we know we did wrong.

So in the end, LXC cared about the "good" side of JGY because he didn't see the other one or believed there was legit solid reason for it.

Now ruoyao. There's definitely not as much canon material as xiyao, but what we have is telling enough imo. MY had a very important and high rank in the Wen sect, very close to WRH himself, which, given what we saw of WRH, could only mean that he held MY in very high regard. Up until that point in MY's life (and later on too lbr), no one had shown him such open respect and consideration that actually impacted how the world treated him AND that included MY's... less flattering qualities.

MY's resourcefulness, cunning and cleverness were things society condemned: how he copied techniques, how he schemed, how he tricked his way to the top. Spy mission aside, WRH was the only one to ever reward him for the tools and abilities he had cultivated instead of insisting he did things this or that way to appeal to sensibilities of others. He was the only person ever to tell MY that ambition was okay and he actively encouraged him down that path (even if we all can agree that it would have led to a much darker place than canon). He just failed to account for the goodness MY also had and it was eventually his downfall.

WRH saw the "bad" side of MY and saw all the potential he deemed desirable and praise-worthy, contrary to what the rest of the world said.

So I don't think these ships so much overlap as they are mostly two extremes of the same "fully supportive of MY/JGY" spectrum. One that didn't acknowledge the negative side until it was too late, and the other that was fine with sacrificing the positive side and it led to underestimating it.

Elricest

Oh, you wanted brutal? My brutally honest opinion? Fine.

Elricest is the most tender, beautiful, awe-inspiring ship to be found on this planet. Nothing else can ever top the pure love and devotion that these two have for each other—or that they inspire in me.

I legitimately went into FMA knowing it featured brothers and telling myself “now I don’t have to ship the brothers just because they’re brothers…”

…and I don’t. I ship them because they are front and center in each others’ lives, the literal most important thing to each other, the only person they’d give up their whole life for. An arm, a leg, a heart. None of it matters, as long as they’re together.

Now, you did want brutal, so here’s my secret opinion on them: I don’t think they’re crazy enough.

Now this is more a thing about Ed and Al as characters, rather than them as a ship. But I think the narrative comes out making them seem too…squeaky clean.

Al in Conqueror of Shamballa comes the closest, with his determination to get Ed back at any cost, even that of bringing invaders from another dimension. But that choice of his is immediately chastised by the narrative. (Yes, yes, I know. Themes and everything. But what about what I, personally, want?)

I like my ships a little too devoted to each other. I like characters who are too wrapped up in each other to see the bigger picture. I guess that’s why I daydream all the time about the AU where they are like that.

#like thank god we didn’t actually interact #i was at my college’s scene shop meeting with its head abt a project #and he just happened to be there #but he kept fucking looking at me #fucking infuriating #at least my friend [redacted] was there #even tho we’re at a weird place rn. some of you may have seen. the posts abt that. el oh el. #at the very least she and I aren’t fighting it’s just tense bc she’s dealing with shit and needs space #whatever I’m getting off topic #almost cried in the car on the way home but like. im fucking done crying over that friendship #even though I have to remind myself that every time I think about it I am literally done #it just sucks cause it would be so much easier if he’d been a really shitty friend. but he was BOTH a shitty friend and a really good one #and I didn’t want that friendship to end. even though looking back I think it’s probably for the best that it did #but yeah. felt like a low blow from the universe to be reminded of losing him at the same time im temporarily losing ms redacted #which is a whole other vent post that im not actually gonna make bc I talked it through pretty well with my best-best friend #honestly it was a little poetic #whatever #personal

Love is so Lovely #Poem 86

Love is one of the most human things I know, We can fall in love with anything and everything, Even ourselves, We love thousands of lights throughout our cities, We love leaves falling from tall trees along our dirt roads, We love hearing frogs croaking throughout the night and hearing birds chirping in our morning light, We love listening to cars drive past our windows and the low down or people in our night, We love the silly swirly straws we used to put in our milkshakes when we were younger, We love going on adventures to the supermarket or across the world, We love memories of our past and thoughts of our future, Love is so lovely. - lovely poet
