"AAAAHHH! Help! It's a giant.. Floating.. Tiny Nightwing?"

You slowly fall to your knees after panicking. Seeing the small fella float close to you, you shrink in on yourself shyly. Watching him float around you, analyzing you...

Meeting you was not what Dyxl expected!

You were strange... Unfamiliar, sure. Nite-Mite knew of Richard Graysons' love interests in the past comic issues or alternative storylines.

Maybe you were a new character implemented by the authors?

"SO..."

"S-so...?"

The small creature sat on the desk chair of your room. Eyeing you carefully. While you sat nervously on your bed, half-expecting to wake up. "You must be the newbie! Or, more so.. For this plot. The love-."

You notice there's a knocking on your bedroom door.

"(Y/N)? Everything okay?" Dick calls out, half-way yawning.

You immediately grab a hold of the small individual, holding him close to your chest as you look for a place to hide him.

"Yeah-! Uhm.. I.. Thought I saw a mouse?"

There was silence from the vigilante, considering your words. "That so'?"

"Mhm, yup. Yes..?" You breathe out, getting closer to the door. Thankful it was locked. The vigilante heard your movements and sighed. "Oh.. Good! W-well, I mean- that you're okay! Not the mouse part."

You laugh it off quietly, agreeing as he finally leaves your door and heads back to his room. You sigh in relief as you slowly sink back to the floor.

You lean back against the door, head banging against as you wince!

"Ouch! That's gotta' hurt.." Your eyes widen as you look down at your small visitor who sat on your lap. Chilling out as if he didn't have a single care in the world.

"I think you have the wrong person.." You mumble quietly under your breath. Watching Nite-Mite buzz around your room as he grins at you.

"Nope!"

"But! I'm not exactly his.. Ya' know..?" You make a gesture as your face scrunched up. The words too sour on your tounge.

"Type?"

"Yes! That!"

Dxyl laughed it off. "So what? Sure, many.. And I mean.. MANY! People have fallen for the Grayson Charm, but that doesn't mean he always reciprocates those feelings."

"Then what makes you think -" You're interrupted by the fith dimensional imp. "There's just something un-canny about you. Your presence is there, but no romantic tension? I mean, seriously!"

Nite-Mite snaps his fingers as he shows a built-in board of notes, strings, and photos. Pointing at them as he tries to connect it all together.

You slowly smile, easing into this odd situation. Smiling as he holds up a issue of... Nightwing? Watching him ramble and point to the board, it reminded you of Dick. Who probably fell back asleep, hopefully.

Poof~!

Blinking, your clothes felt heavier as you look down. Dressed in old fashionable garb?! What!

"Though I'm sure whoever Dick chooses is up to him, it's fun to see other routes!"

Nite-Mite had become... Nightwing?

Instead of the usual skin-tight latex suit, the outfit showcased half of his bare-chest as the blue pants and brown boots reminded you of...

"P-pirate?" You laugh a bit, awkward and frazzled by these turn of events.

"Well.. -" Interrupted once again, the door rips open as a handsome young man storms in, his small puppy barked excitedly as she followed close behind. Yet stopped beside Dicks legs, blinking in confusion.

You immediately squeak in suprise. Your face a warm shade of color, too embarrassed to deal with all of these shenanigans so early!

Love and Deepspace: The Story So Far Part 1

A summary of everything that has happened in the main story thus far. Obviously, spoilers below the cut.

See Part 2. Part 3. Part 4.

2048 Story begins with MC being initiated as a Hunter in the Hunter's Association. MC is about 21-22, and her Evol has to do with Resonance, Anhaunsen Class. Rafayel is (probably) 24, Fire Evol. Zayne is 27, Ice Evol. Xavier claims to be 23, Light Evol. Traceback II is approaching the event horizon and entering the black hole.

Day 1: (Wednesday, Likely July 1st, 2048)

MC meets Xavier on her first mission as a Hunter in an abandoned protocore research facility. He is in a trap set for him, surrounded by light Wanderers. MC helps him defeat them.

MC is accepted into Captain Jenna's Alpha team. Tara is accepted into Data Analysis, whose Captain is Andrew.

MC meets Rafayel briefly at a fishing game in Azure Square near the Hunter's Association HQ. He catches a red Flammula from Lemuria corner, and she gives it to him to take home. (Cell phone shows appointment reminder. Time currently 18:15 on Wednesday, appointment at 18:30.)

MC has a doctor's appointment with Zayne. He has just returned from a trip to the Arctic.

MC returns to her apartment. There is a storm outside. She has a call with Caleb and talks about how they plan to have dinner with Grandma Josephine at the end of the month. After the call, she encounters a strange glowing eye that vanishes outside her apartment window that night.

Day 2 (Likely Thursday, July 2nd):

The next day, MC has her first day on the Alpha team at UNICORN HQ. Nero is one of her teammates and has extensive knowledge of Wanderers. He begins to look into the eye she saw. MC is assigned her first solo mission: to find out if there are Wanderers in the home of Henry Raymond.

On the way to Raymond's house, MC finds Zayne with his car broken down. He is Raymond's doctor and MC agrees to give him a ride there on her motorcycle.

At Raymond's house, MC discovers a strange painting that shows her a vision. Then she and Zayne fight a Wanderer. Raymond is sent to the hospital and the painting is taken for further investigation.

Back at HQ, MC learns the painting was done by Rafayel.

Day 3 (Likely Friday, July 3rd):

MC gets an appointment with Rafayel's agent Thomas and goes to meet him at Rafayel's studio the next morning.

Thomas directs her to Mo Art studio, where Rafayel lives. She questions him about the painting and they fight a Wanderer in his house. Rafayel says that as payment for the information he gives her, he'll hire her as his bodyguard.

While MC is on the way home on the subway, it is attacked by a Wanderer. Captain Jenna sends Xavier to be her backup. Xavier says she doesn't need backup.

(That night??) MC is sent to investigate an abandoned protocore research facility in a No Hunt Zone where a stele has been discovered. When her partner doesn't show, she goes alone and finds Xavier apparently comforting a Wanderer. The Wanderer explodes. Xavier examines the remaining protocore and once he determines it isn't what he was looking for he crushes it. Xavier confronts MC and after realizing her ankle is injured, tells her she should leave. He says that the forest consumes people. She refuses to leave, and after he has cleared out many Wanderers, he returns and decides to help her leave. After walking for a while and dealing with some Wanderers, they find the stele, the Flux Nexus. There is an Aeonwrym, the most dangerous of Wanderers, being reconstructed by Metaflux from the stele. With Xavier’s guidance, MC resonates with the Flux Nexus, unlocking it and causing the Aeonwyrm to dissipate. A unique protocore is revealed. Xavier concludes that someone was trying to resurrect the Aeonwyrm. After being swarmed by Wanderers, Xavier ports them to a safe location. After examining the protocore, he says that it has been tampered with by Onychinus. Xavier leaves, saying she should be able to get out safely now. They are being watched by a mechanical raven.

Day 4 (Likely Saturday, July 4th):

MC remembers running to escape during the Chronorift Catastrophe. She senses a powerful force about to burst from her heart. Something that looks like a glowing red moon descends in front of her, flickering. It appears to be blinking at her.

The day after being in the No Hunt Zone with Xavier, thinking about her nightmare the night before, MC heads to HQ. She finds Xavier being interviewed on the street by aggressive journalists. He asks her to help him get away from them. They go to HQ for a post mission briefing with Captain Jenna. During the briefing, MC learns that Onychinus has been altering the protocurves of protocores to make them more powerful. However, the protocore MC just found is on a level not seen before. Jenna suggests that MC begin investigating Onychinus aND the Flux Nexus, as she has the ability to unlock them. Then she tells MC to take 2 days off work. Afterwards, MC and Xavier talk. She realizes his desk is the one next to hers. When she asks him who he thinks she should partner with, he says she should refuse the mission. He explains that getting involved with Onychinus is complicated. MC is just more interested. Xavier requests that if she does take on the mission, that she choose him as her partner.

Day 5 (Sunday, July 5th, per in-game information):

MC goes home to visit Grandma. She is surprised to find Caleb there a day early. While eating dinner, the news says there have been mysterious explosions caused by Wanderers occurring. The MC's Hunter's Watch picks up on Wanderers nearby. She goes out to explore and Caleb follows. After he goes into a store, she investigates the area and finds a suspicious man. He sounds older than he looks. He attacks her with his Evol and disappears. Then Caleb reappears, asking what happened. He realizes she's been injured and they argue. Once they get back to the house, Caleb goes in ahead of her. The house explodes. MC comes back to consciousness on the ground surrounded by flames. On the ground in front of her is the necklace she gave Caleb. On it is an apple charm and the words “When U Come Back”.

FFVII Rare Pair Week 2024

Urban Dictionary defines rarepair as “A ship or pairing that not many people ship or is very rare to find fanfiction and fanart of. Typically happens within small fandoms or with minor characters.” So what’s your favourite Final Fantasy VII related rare pair? Do you have more than one? Here’s a chance to showcase them and help them move up from being rare! Not all parts of the pairing have to be from FFVII, and you don’t have to do the same pairing or group for the whole week! ** Pairings can be romantic or platonic. ** Below we have a list of prompts for this year. Feel free to be as creative with those as you want to, and take your time working on your entries, but please don’t forget to post them on the right date if you can. (But remember, no matter how late it’s better than never!)

For this event we are using a category approach. You can use the category as a theme for your prompt and the listed items suggested ideas. If none of the prompts give you any ideas, don’t worry! You can create anything you like for the week, provided it involves a rare pair! The goal of the week is to celebrate and share our rare pairs more than to just follow a list. A dive into Vertin's core aspect of her character and it's impact through the story: Part 1

This would be a character analysis with mix of speculations, headcannons and eventually just straight up heading to fanfiction levels territory, so if you were expecting a more cannon analysis, you have been warned.

With that said however, for those who are still interested, welcome to my insanity! This was something that I have been working with a friend of mine who you may or may not know as @acesw for the past week, and we are finally satisfied with it enough to post it! A lot of the ideas that are present in this came from them, while I offer my own interpretations and expanding on those very ideas through my writing. Without them, this analysis likely will have never come to fruition, so I can't be thankful enough for having them go on this journey with me, and also to just have as a good friend. Go check them out, they have really neat ideas and is a genuinely creative and artful person!

Now with that outta the way, time for the main event you are have been waiting for, our one and only beloved Timekeeper herself, and the emotional roller coaster that we have prepared for her. Please do enjoy.

Background context:

Vertin is an incredibly interesting and compelling character in many ways. Her ability to care for other people to a great extent whether she knows them for long or not. Her compassion for everyone around her, her empathy, her willingness to open her heart and listen to others when it matters. All these traits make up who Vertin is as a character and is a large part of why so many people fall in love with her and the story; to not only see more of her but to see where her story will go.

However, there is one part of her character that stands out the most to us, a core aspect of her character that makes up most, if not all her major decisions in the story up until this point, and will be the main subject of this entire analysis.

And that is Vertin's incredible sense of selflessness.

From going out of her way to save Regulus and not let her be forced to be taken in by the Foundation. Her attempts at getting through to Schneider, to understanding and showing her immense compassion even in the heat of moments. Choosing to stay behind in the Walden to fend off the Manus while the others escaped, and most crucial of all, her conscious decision to bury all her trauma inside herself to prevent others from worrying about her. Hell, even her entire motive and drive to seek the truth about the Storm and a way to stop it stems from her desire for freedom and the future of everyone.

All of this is in some way driven by Vertin's selfless nature, always prioritizing the sake of others above herself, to the point of risking her own life if it means she could protect those around her.

She's someone who will go out of her way to connect with others, even when knowing that the pain of losing them will never fade away, to give them comfort and help them if she can no matter what.

It is an incredibly beautiful part of what makes Vertin such a compelling, lovable, and admirable character and person, but at the same time, it also represents Vertin's biggest issue about herself.

That Vertin isn’t just selfless, she is selfless to a fault.

Vertin will prioritize saving everyone above herself, or rather, she would prioritize and save everyone but herself. For Vertin intrinsically has no sense of self-value nor self-worth; in other words, she has no self identity, for her entire life is valued based on other people, not herself. This can bring a lot of self-conflict, as well as possibly even harming others when reaching a point where every step taken is crucial.

And this serious of posts will detail and explore this aspect of her, its ramifications upon the character, and to not only show the ugliest and most painful parts of it, but to also show a path that Vertin might possibly take in the story to confront this part of herself somehow. In other words: welcome to Vertin's suffering builds character arc.

What can we tell from canon?

Where do we start seeing the decision making? We already start seeing them in the first 2 chapters. In summary:

Chapter 1 - Vertin continuously is left with decisions that she has to make on the fly, starting from deciding to try to see if Regulus can survive the storm and choosing to stay behind the Walden and risk getting harmed by the Manus Vindictae for the sake of her team as well as helping Schneider.

Chapter 2 - Vertin finds herself having to choose between keeping her silence and “joining” the Manus, and when she initially refuses, Arcana has her answer questions that bring unsatisfactory answers, leading her to harm Schneider. But when she does say she’ll join, she is first tasked and eventually manipulated to “kill” her.

Now, that’s all fine and dandy and does communicate that she is a very altruistic person and a selfless individual, but how is any of that bad or problematic? How does that correlate to her not having any sense of self-worth? Chapter 1’s ending is the first instance we get to see just how far Vertin’s selflessness goes, by her decision of staying behind to grant Sonetto and the others time to escape. Because of Vertin’s sacrificial play, Druvis and the majority of Manus didn’t pursue Sonetto's crew as aggressive as they would have, giving them time to properly make their runaway. Not only that, but both her and Schneider were kept alive, albeit captive.

There, Vertin’s selflessness is shown in a good light, being an admirable trait of hers that was crucial in progressing the story. This is the only instance in the story so far that has highlighted this trait of hers in a positive light, which is then contrasted by what happens in chapter 2.

Here, that aspect of hers that so far has been so boldly displayed as a good thing; saving Regulus and her team, is now flipped on its head, showing us that sometimes, being selfless simply isn't enough.

Vertin was put into a situation where she needed to make a choice, to either join Manus or reject their offer. When she chose the latter, Schneider was put into danger. And as each question Arcana asked piled on to her and the pressure started to rise further, Vertin went back on her words, choosing to stay with them.

This is so she could ensure Schneider’s survival, a selfless choice she makes for the sake of a person she had barely known. It was also here where Vertin’s naivety blinds her of the situation she was in.

That no matter what she chose, Schneider wasn't going to make it out of this.

Schneider had already betrayed them, but even before that, she never truly believed in them in the first place, only soaking up to them for her own personal goals. She was the one who lied to Manus about her identity, to pretend to play along with them until she bided her time, and now she was captured right in their hands.

It doesn’t take much for one to come to the conclusion that Schneider was a dead woman walking.

Yet, Vertin did not see this. For her view of the world even at this point was too naive, warped by her own perception and belief. A belief that by giving herself up, by throwing her own agency away will somehow lead to other people’s lives improving. That somehow, someway, by disregarding her own safety, the safety of others will be secured.

Vertin is living in a highly warped perception of the world, thinking and believing that if she alone suffers, no one else has to.

Green Oranges serves as a reality check to Vertin, albeit one that Vertin was unfortunately in too much emotional distress to properly realised.

However, it’s important to note that the game was rigged from the start. Regardless of what Vertin would have chosen, Schneider was going to “die” there either way. So although we witnessed the consequences of Vertin’s selfless choice, it would be unfair to call it her fault. So for now, this chapter only serves as a warning to Vertin.

That even if her selflessness is admirable and has paid the way to many good results, her complete lack of care for herself is not, and is leading her to believe in a false image of the world. A flaw that she will continue to neglect until it becomes far too late to remedy.

Chapter 3 and 4 are the harder ones to allocate, mostly because Vertin isn’t the main focus and rarely appears in the story at all except for flashbacks or dreams. But it still serves a very important role in giving us another facet of this character trait that Vertin exhibits.

That this selflessness of hers doesn’t just affect her, but also the relationships she has with the people around her, and specifically, her crew and Sonetto.

We were told that before Vertin was put to sleep, she had acted relatively the same as she always was, carrying out her duties until she was forced to be sedated and put into the coma we saw her at the start of Chapter 3. We knew that Vertin had set up plans in the form of Lilya and the bill she made with Madam Z, but this was something that wouldn’t be known by us or the other characters until much later.

For the entirety of her time spent before the events of 3 and 4, Vertin kept herself closed off, ensuring that she wouldn’t worry her new friends and even more so, Sonetto. But as a consequence, this results in nobody truly knowing what Vertin was thinking or trying to do prior to going comatose.

Sonetto, Vertin’s closest companion, someone who knows Vertin the longest and has been with her the most, wasn’t even privy to what Vertin’s plans were. She was left struggling to figure out what she should do to help Vertin, while also battling her own inner turmoil.

Druvis, Sotheby, Regulus, APPle, all of them were also victims of this. They had no idea what Vertin was planning, nor was even given any hints; they were left to their own devices and in turn, the influence of the Foundation. Vertin may have tried to help them by not getting them involved with the Foundation matters, but this ironically only led to them being drawn into the organisation because of their desire of wanting to help Vertin.

If Madam Z hadn’t come in to give Druvis the push she needed, Constantine likely would have gotten things to go her way. If it wasn’t for the collective efforts of Z and Vertin’s crew and so many others, Vertin likely wouldn’t have been freed.

These two chapters showcase the loyalty and trust that her friends have in Vertin, but it also highlights the issue of Vertin always trying to hide things away, to always keep herself emotionally closed. Even if she had good intentions, it still led to less than favourable outcomes that could have very well ended badly for all of them had things gone differently.

With that, we have gotten a rough understanding of Vertin’s character up until this point. Vertin’s selflessness can be an good thing to posses, but because of her disregard of her own well-being and her naive belief that only she needs to make sacrifices for the good of everyone, it is ultimately an unhealthy outlet for Vertin’s way of coping with her trauma. Not just internally, but externally as well.

From here on, I will be diving into my own personal headcanon of where the direction of the story might go, with the purpose of having Vertin’s character be pushed slowly towards a breaking point that will force her to confront this very part of herself, and perhaps, come out learning something from it all.

Speculation: Vertin’s breaking point

Before we get into it however, there is one thing that must be noted here so that the events that will transpire would make more sense.

That being how exactly could the story push Vertin’s character to her limit, when she herself is a naturally strong and composed person? It’s quite simple really, in fact, the answer was already given to us all the way back in Chapter 2.

Vertin’s one crucial weakness that even she might not even realise, that being her overwhelming compassion for those she cares about.

Throughout chapter 1 and 2, we have seen how Vertin deals with stress. How she is able to mentally process the situation around her in a logical and composed manner, allowing her to come to the best possible solution in a short time without letting her emotions run rampant.

And during her confrontation with Arcana, she continues to showcase her composure when faced with a difficult situation and choices. That is until Arcana began to shift her hostility towards Schneider, and we start to see the cracks forming at her surface.

Vertin is capable of dealing with high stress situations, however, when that situation involves other people, especially those she has come to know or care about, this mask of calmness starts to slip as she reveals how she truly feels.

That Vertin cares too much to see other people get hurt, knowing she can do something about it.

But this wasn’t enough, Vertin might be faltering, but she still tries to keep a calm level head, even when each question gets more and more personal for her. But it was okay, so long as she answered truthfully and picked their side, things will “somehow” work out.

This dream is then shattered by Arcana’s mission given to her; to kill the girl she had chosen to save by throwing her agency away.

Here, the mask falters even more as Vertin slips further into emotional distress. This is the rare time, and really one of the only times you get to see Vertin raise her voice, far from her monotone voice she always has. It was getting to her.

This is then exacerbated from her shooting Schneider. Even if it was not by choice, Vertin was still the one who pulled the trigger, the one that held the gun against Schneider, and the one that killed her; a girl who she had come to care a great deal about in such a short time.

Here, the mask completely falls as Vertin expresses just how much this breaks her heart. The only instance in the game where Vertin ever shed a tear for something or someone.

So it’s clear now that the biggest strength to her character that Vertin has; her love and compassion for others, is also her biggest weakness. A weakness that can be exploited and used to push Vertin past and even beyond her breaking point.

So let’s do just that.

The narrative will go like this: Vertin and her crew are tasked on an important mission of some kind, where they are given more control and permission to decide and do more so long as Vertin is the one making those choices. This puts Vertin into a position of power much higher than she usually assumes, which will first add a layer of stress over her as she carries out her mission.

Then, the story will sprinkle in a variety of different decisions that Vertin has to make, some big and some small. All of them have some kind of effect on the people around her or their situation. This further adds stress to the girl, now having to juggle the responsibilities of making the difficult choices and decisions that no one else can, because she was their leader, the one assigned to do the job.

At first, things do start to look better as her crew tries their best to assist her, and the situation starts to look more promising. It would be here where a wrench would be thrown, completely sending the whole mission into disarray.

Something completely unexpected occurs, causing chaos and mayhem to follow suit. Vertin tries to assert the situation and find a way to stabilise the people, her crew doing their best to help. However, in their task of ensuring the situation doesn’t derail any further, her crew subsequently split off from her, leaving the girl alone to her own devices.

Here, we begin the start of Vertin’s downfall.

Now without her crew or Sonetto’s help, Vertin is now forced into a situation where she needs to continuously make quick and decisive actions on the fly, all to ensure that things are kept as stable as possible. This leads to her going out and helping as many people as she can, trying to resolve as many issues as possible by herself so that others can focus on their safety.

However, not every situation can be resolved peacefully nor gracefully.

Gradually, Vertin is faced with more and more difficult choices, ones that require her to choose one side or the other with escalating stakes and tension. No matter what she chooses however, people still get hurt, lives are still put in danger. And Vertin, being the girl that she is, can’t bear to see it happen.

So she tries to find ways to choose both, to save both parties so long as she can help it. Even if it meant having to risk her own safety, Vertin cannot bear to choose one and let the others perish. She can’t allow that to happen.

So she gives herself up to the task of saving people. To abandon her own safety and subsequently her own agency in order to ensure that others will live. So that everyone can make it out even if she doesn’t.

If only she is the casualty in all this, it is the result that Vertin can accept, a result that Vertin can be at peace with.

What she doesn’t realise, or perhaps she isn’t willing to see is that she’s forcing herself into a corner. By placing so much emphasis on saving, by abandoning her own safety and subsequently her own position of power, Vertin has left a chain of command with no real leader, and the situation starts falling into chaos.

But she can’t see it, Vertin isn’t able to recognize this because she’s so intensely focused on the people around her who are suffering right that moment. Her composure is slipping, as she watches as people’s lives are being destroyed and perished rapidly before her eyes, and she can’t seem to make it better no matter how far she keeps going. This only furthers her careless act of selflessness, forgoing more and more of her own life until it was the last thing on her mind.

Eventually, things reach a boiling point where Vertin, alone, is faced with an obstacle that directly threatens her life and countless others. She now faces a choice, whether to prioritise her own safety over the lives of dozens of people, some strangers, some whose faces have grown familiar to her, or throw her life away again with the blinding hope that things will work out.

If she chooses to run, choose to save herself, Vertin can never live with herself. For a girl like her, who has made it her life to save anyone she can, and so running away can never be an option for her. So naturally, without a second thought, Vertin chooses to throw her life away in exchange of saving everyone’s lives.

A decision that will haunt the girl for the rest of her life.

By the time Vertin awakes, she finds that she is still alive, unscathed at that. But only a moment passes before Vertin notices the countless bodies of those that died, and the destruction that was wrought about around her. At first, she was confused, then the memories started to flood in.

The memories of the moment she chose to throw her life away, chose to give herself up for the sake of others. And in that instance, someone did the same for her, pushing her out of death’s way as they sacrificed themselves for her. Someone she personally knew and cared about.

In the end, Vertin faces the result of her sacrifice; nothing but lifeless corpses, an utter wasteland filled with bodies with no souls left in them; and she alone survives.

But she might as well be dead, life completely leaving her quickly dulling eyes, a single thought consuming her mind.

This was her fault.

She chose to give her life away, to disregard her own leadership, her role and her worth all for the sake of others.

Because she was too selfless, too kind to ever let herself bear the guilt and burden of letting innocent people die when she could have saved them. And she thought that by sacrificing herself, she can do just that.

She never accounted for the fact that someone would save her.

That someone would prioritise her life over countless others, to choose to sacrifice themselves for someone like her. To give their life for Vertin.

Vertin kneels, her arms and hands shaking as her eyes froze still. She can’t bear to look at the scene before her, her stomach rising to her chest.

For she has finally seen the reality of the world around her, finally acknowledges something she has willingly and selfishly ignored for all this time.

Vertin has always had some level of survivor's guilt within her. Starting from the breakaway incident, Vertin had likely always felt how unfair and cruel it was that only she got to live, when she was the one that was responsible for leading them here.

Sure, the kids went with her because they desired the same thing, but it was she who led them, she who gave them the spark of desire to want to venture out, and because of her, they were all gone.

Vertin has been carrying that guilt ever since, always masking it under layers and layers of self-imposed composure; a way to protect herself from the pain of the past, but as a way to stop people from getting too close to her, because she is afraid that something similar might happen again if that was the case. That if she were to let people know her, to get to care about her, that they too will suffer because of their involvements with her.

But Vertin was too kind, too good, too compassionate. Even when she emotionally distances herself from others, people still flock to her because they see just how kind she is.

Because even when she doesn’t show it, the girl cared enough to go out of her way to save them, so of course they would be grateful to her, of course they would feel immense gratitude and appreciation for her. Of course they would choose her as their leader and follow her.

And of course, one of them would throw their life away to save hers.

Vertin had abandoned all self-importance or self-value, believing that she, the lone survivor of a terrible tragedy, the one who shouldn’t have lived for the sins that she had committed; deserved no such thing. That someone like her should not dare to believe she had value, when all she had done was cause death to those she cared about. That was what she had believed in, what she had convinced herself to believe in.

Because of that, she ignored the signs. She ignored the warnings given to her by others, the warning that if she keeps going down this path of self-annihilation, that eventually she will be met with a fate much worse than death.

In her selfless attempt to save everyone and everything, she had selfishly taken away the people’s chance to save her. To save the girl who had suffered far too much and who had helped even more, even when she can’t see past her own warped perception of herself.

And now she is facing the consequences of that. She is now looking at the results of her blindness, the carnage that was her willful ignorance to herself and to others, and the irony of being the only one left alive through it all once more.

In the past, she was an unwilling player on a chess board designed for her to lose. Now, she was the girl who gave up her own King for the all her pieces, and in return, she lost everything.

Vertin facing this, her composure long since lost, finally breaks.

She slumps onto the floor, her body and mind utterly overwhelmed with every facet of emotions she could conjure within the darkest pit of her stomach, all while drenched in the blood of the people she was supposed to save.

The blood of people who knew her, who admired and respected her, who cared for her, who saw her as a friend, who saw her as family. All of them suffered at her hands, at her own selfish choice to forsake her life because she saw no other way; because she perceived that there was no other way.

And she can't bear all that guilt. All the pain and unprocessed trauma she had buried inside her now finally comes bubbling out of her, completely suffocating the girl. That lack of self-value that she harbours now replaced with unending resentment and pure unbridled self-hatred. Something she had always carried inside her that only got worse over time, and now, it finally had an excuse to be let out.

An existence that had done nothing but wrought pain and death to everyone it ever cared about. An existence that so readily throws its life away at the slightest of inconvenience, never caring about what others think about them, for they were too blinded in their own suicidal nature to ever think that they deserved to be cared about.

Vertin truly believes that she does not deserve to be cared about. She truly believes that she is the worst of the worst, an willfully ignorant murderer, so blinded by their own vision of the world that they refuse to see the reality as what it is. And now, they're paying their just price for it, a price they should have paid long ago.

Vertin knew better than anyone, that she was nothing but a murderer.

UTTU Part 2: The Flash Gathering

Part 1: The Magazine is here ! Read it beforehand to have more context on UTTU.

Now, this post will be simply just be a more in-depth explanation of UTTU's Flash Gathering, and final reflection about UTTU in general.

Unlike in the previous post, this post will look into the events and involved characters more to further expand on what we see in this event below the surface level. The information in this post is subject to change.

[Spoilers for the storyline in both events!]

Flash Gathering

*UTTU Flash Gathering, a reading salon held regularly by UTTU Magazine.

UTTU’s Flash Gathering is an event where they host a mass reading for their FLASH magazine and card collection sales. Described by Melania in 1.1, they’re essentially a club that has piqued the interest of the arcanist world, adding that “They have no fixed venue, nor a fixed theme.The only thing that remains unchanged is the numerous interesting books it provides and the great rewards.”

Now, how the event starts varies between 1.1 and 1.2, and I’ll be briefly explaining how it goes down for both.

1.1: Trophy of Past Glory

In London, newsboys holding UTTU’s FLASH:FAME magazines spread out across the city, appearing and disappearing for certain moments to hand out the magazines. With enough magazines, one can get into the UTTU Market and read the UTTU:FLASH magazines. Diggers and Pickles are given FLASH:FAME magazines and Melania barely misses them and loses an opportunity to find the market location. But, Pickles has another magazine and this allows the three to go to the market.

1.2: Night Visit to the Lake

Horropedia, Blonney, and Jessica (and also Vertin who gets dragged along, Tooth Fairy accompanies them) are given invitation cards to the UTTU market situated in Green Lake Campsite, in which they all head to for a night.

[Flash Journal] and FLASH:FAME

The Flash Gathering has two different sections: The Market and the Retails. The UTTU Market holds many of the good rewards and their [Flash Journal], while the UTTU Retails holds the FLASH:FAME magazines and greatly rewards people for reading them, even challenging them to read more magazines (i.e. “Intensive reading”).

The Flash Journal and the FAME magazines are a compilation of stories in relation to the themes regarding the event, such as stories of football in 1.1, and a collection of horror stories in 1.2. It seems that the characters stay around the market area casually while reading through their books, whose physical forms have similar properties to their main magazine. The way they get their rewards is simply proving that they read the book through arcane wits/wisdom.

For both events, they capture a moment of the characters enjoying the gathering by having new realizations and bonding through shared interests formed in this event. With the Rimet Cup trio, they all respectively learn a lot about football, art (in a philosophical approach thanks to Diggers), and unity through sportsmanship. While for the Green Lake cast, Blonney and Horropedia bond for their love for horror as Vertin helps Jessica reenact one of the stories that they read, with the intent to scare them for the fun of it.

All in all, the Flash Gathering really ties together the themes of the event’s story and how the relationships between each of them play out once they find time to gather in a special place such as this.

Other Information and Reflection

Other information about UTTU

-UTTU has an office/headquarters situated in an unknown place in the world. It seems that they are immune to the Storm like how the Foundation/Manus/etc. are.

-As mentioned earlier, Pandora Wilson is the main writer and reporter for the profiles of the arcanists in our playable roster. She has the most knowledge about our arcanists (besides Vertin) and will seem to continue releasing articles about them as more characters join

-They act accordingly to the events that are present and find ways to host more than one Flash Gathering (which I think is the case since as we know Mor Pankh and Rimet Cup are happening almost simultaneously)

-Vertin doesn’t have an article in UTTU; Which to me is a bit strange because we don’t know enough about her. But then again, we are playing as her. Whether or not she would have an article doesn’t matter anyway since we are watching her own story through her eyes. If she did, she might be just simply not bothered to take a look at it.

Final Remarks

This is all the information I have on UTTU so far, and I plan to add to this when more information about them comes out. I find UTTU to be a really interesting organization and I hope we learn more about them as we catch up to our CN siblings, haha. They're very passionate about their work and strive to share the stories of the arcanists around the world, and I think that's already quite inspiring in of itself.

The 72 Demons Of The Ars Goetia

This will be multi parts and in each one we will be going over each branch of them "whoop whoop" let's get cracking

Starting off the 72 demons of the ars goetia are the amalgamation of the Occult Writings from the 15th century. Compiled into one text in the 17th that is where we get what is now known as the Lemegeton Clavicula Salomonis or simply The Lesser Key Of Solomon. Due to many translations spelling changes depending on region and personal preference for the author.

Now for the next section The Dukes Of Hell Pt.1 of 2

Amdusias: One of the Dukes of hell. They have 29 legions of demons and spirits under their command. The Duke is depicted as a human with claws instead of hands and feet, the head of a unicorn, and a trumpet showcasing their powerful voice. Amdusias is associated with thunder and many say they hear his voice within storms. They are in charge of the music being played in hell and he is said to play music on command of the conjurer.

His Symbol

Invoke during more aggressive pursuits and execration magicks. Some Demonolators believe Amdusias, Asmodeus/Asmoday, and Amaymon are the three heads of the three headed Asmodai image from Colin de Plancy’s Dictionnaire Infernal. Amdusias being the more aggressive of the three to be employed during battle and situations requiring an aggressive strategy with military precision

Agares: One of the Dukes of Hell Ruler of the Eastern Zon, is served by 31 legions of demons. He is described as a pale old man riding on the back of a crocodile. He can return runaways and make those who stand still run I.e from a bad situation or in a fight or flight moment. He holds the power to destroy dignities both temporal and supernatural.

His Symbol

It is said that you should wear his sigil after the work in question. Seek Agares for wisdom in friendship and to make your garden grow. He also gives advice on financial matters with regard to projects

Valefor: Duke of Hell,Commands 10 legions of demons. He is described as a Lion with the head of a man, or as a Lion with the head of a donkey. He tempts people to steal and is in charge of a good relationship amongst thieves.

His Symbol

Teaches loyalty and the art of manipulation. Can show you how to charm others and get what you want. Wear Valefor’s seal during rituals to invoke, and afterward to manifest the desired results.

Barbatos: Both and Earl and Duke of Hell, He rules over 30 legions of demons and has 4 kings as his companions to command them. He is described as arriving when the sun is in sagitarry and arriving with his four noble kings and their great troops. He gives the ability to speak with animals big and small and find hidden treasures. He is shown to be omnipotent and is able to hide those in power from their enemies.

His Symbol

Seek Barbatos to stop magician’s personal wars with one another. Invoke Barbatos to communicate with your familiar if needed. Also invoke to protect your home from hidden attacks.

Gusion: A Strong Duke of Hell who rules over 40 legions of demons. He is depicted as a baboon or as a xenophilia. He is another semi impotent being, can tell all past and future events and knows the answer to life's questions. He also has the ability to reconcile friendships.

His Symbol:

Gusion is a spirit of divination as well as being a guide in the communication with the shades of the dead. Gusion is also a spirit which instinctually passes on concepts and ideals in honor and dignity. The sorcerer through invoking the spirit would focus on areas of character development and self-perception, that which separates the initiate from the profane and common clay of humanity

Eligos: Great Duke of Hell , rules of 60 legions of demons. Depicted as a good knight carrying a lance , an ensign and a serpent (an ensign is a flag). He discovers hidden things and knows the futures of wars and the fate of soldiers. He attracts the favor of Manny lord's , knights, and important people (politicians).

His Symbol

Eligos is known to cause love between important people like world leaders// princes - princesses etc.

Zepar: A Great Duke Of Hell and commands 26 legions of inferior spirits. He is depicted a soldier with red clothes and armor. He makes me and woman fall in love and can cause woman to become barren.

His Symbol

He is used often in sex magic and love spells

Bathin: A Great Duke of Hell, he has 30 legions of demons under his command. He is depicted as a strong man with the tail of a serpent riding a pale horse. He knows the virtues of precious stones and herbs and can bring men suddenly from one country to another.

His symbol

He helps you with Astral Projection and takes you wherever you want to go.Invoke Bathin before travel for a smooth trip. Also keep his sigil on you. You can invoke Bathin for opportunity to travel as well. Kitchen Witchery will get you further with Bathin than ceremony

Sallos: a Mighty Great Duke of Hell, He has 30 legions of Demons under his command. He is depicted as a Handsome Soldier wearing a crown and riding upon the back of a crocodile. He is said to be a pacifist and causes love between two humans usually a man and a woman.

His symbol

Sallos is a spirit of lust and desire, whom one may project to bring on with another – and create a flowing inspiration to achieve the union with another.

Aim:A Great Duke of Hell, rules over 26 legions of demons. Truly a powerful Spirit. He is depicted as a Handsome man with three heads One of serpent, one of a man, and One of a cat. carrying in his hand a lit firebrand with which he sets the requested things on fire.Examples being cities, castles and even churches

His Symbol

Duke Aim is a very beautiful and incredible Solar Demon. He is a demon of creativity and one who is incredible for working with the creative energies of the universe. He can remove creative blocks and open up the flood gates of inspiration. He can inspire one to uncover ideas for original art projects and embrace the creative nature of their soul. He is a visionary and innovative when it comes to any artistic venture whether it is fine art, fashion, various crafts or anything that involves creative ventures.

Always when working with these entities show them great respect and take into considerations that the majority of these are gods from other cultures that have had their meanings shifted over the years to be perceived as demonic. Treat them with kindness and respect and for the most part they will treat you the same. Do your research and learn. Learn more everyday and don't forget to have fun. The occult is a wonderful and beautiful thing and I hope to take you on more journeys with me.

DOOM round 1 part 2

Rotten reflections summary : when strange movement in a pharmacy catch's Casey's eye one night, no one could have known the stress, panic and confusion the next few months would bring a turtle not in their right mind ends up in an unknown place with even more unknown threats lurking around every corner, with a hurt little one there's nothing he can do but what his mind screams.

When the world crumbles summary : Two months after the death of their master and the defeat of the Super Shredder, the 2012 turtles get news of another Kraang Invasion. So the turtles make a plan to storm Dimension X and take Kraang Prine down once and for all. However instead of ending up in Dimension X, the turtles end up in a much more neon, colorful dimension with no way to get back home and a full scale invasion on the horizon. Luckily they soon meet their much more colorful counterparts, who will help then get back home. Hopefully.

Atomic pets summary : after the events in the first episode mikey discovers a tiny reptile near the explosion, feeling bad and not wanting to leave it behind he decides to keep it, not realizing it was one of Draxum’s latest experiments. Hijinks ensue with the tiny reptile slow becoming not so tiny and harder to hide from his family, Mikey must learn to keep his atomic breathing giant reptile pet a secret from the rest of his family before they find out.

Not turtles forever 2 or is it summary : Taking place after the events in Turtles Forever and the Rise Movie, 03 Donatello wanted to make another Universal Transporter in order to discover different turtleverses, but something glitched with the machine, and the turtles from Universe 2018 ended up being thrown into Universe 2003 like a bunch of turtle rag dolls! All the turtles are a bit taken aback by their counterparts. The 03 turtles can't believe how strong and powerful the 2018 turtles are, and the 2018 Turtles are shocked at how distant the 03 turtles are from one another. After quite a few emotional talks, a battle or 2, and a plan to get 03 Usagi and Leonardo together, all the turtles soon start to rely on one another, and become about as close as one big mutated family could be! Only problem is, while attempting to get their turtles back, the Hamato clan in Universe 2018 might have ended up doing more harm then good while trying to locate Leo using his broken Odachi.

Lair meshing summary : After Draxum accidentally messes around with some of Splinter’s mystic artifacts, he accidentally merges the Rise Turtles’ reality with the 2012 reality. Now the two families are struggling to get along with versions of themself who understand them better than anyone else does. Leo causes problems on purpose, Donnie commits crimes, Michelangelo learns to cook and Mikey just wants his family to start getting along

Many names of hamato Leonardo summary : Leonardo believed that he was walking to his death when he tossed Casey into that portal. But someone else had something to say about that. A dimension away, a young Donatello wanders out of the lair when he should be taking a nap with his brothers. Never in a million years could he imagine exactly what his little adventure would lead him to. Or, future Rise Leo ends up in the 2003 universe, with no memory of arriving and no way home.

Once a hamato always a hamato summary : Leo gets trapped in the prison dimension only to get sent to the undertale multiverse a little while later. Leo gets changed into Error, the forced god of destruction. Years later he finds a way home! Now he has to get reacquainted with his family while as figuring out how to get his new friends to his world... And, figure out if the reason he was able to in the first place was due to some nefarious plot...

2 Years Later

Graduation was fast approaching, and Y/n had yet to tell anyone about her acceptance to the Royal College of Art. She had received the letter weeks ago but seemed to find excuses every time someone asked what her plans were after graduation. Arthur was definitely on track to become a Formula 1 driver just like his brother and was fast taking the F2 world by storm. Tonight though, racing and any conversation of the sort was not permitted. Y/n and Carla were upstairs in the Leclerc home getting ready for the last dance of their high school lives. Arthur and Charles were downstairs the latter trying to calm his brother’s nerves.

“Why do dances have to be so formal?” Arthur asked as he tugged on his tie.

“Well little brother,” Charles chuckled. “Women like to dress up and what better event than a school dance. Just enjoy it and have fun, I mean you and Clara are going to have so much fun.”

“I guess so. I just wish that y/n hadn’t decided to go to the dance with that idiot Jeremy.”

Charles suddenly uncomfortable at the mention of y/ns date. It’s not like he was jealous or anything but something about the boy didn’t sit right with him. Arthur noticed the change in his brother but said nothing. He knew Charles needed to figure himself out, if y/n didn’t end up hurt.

The doorbell rang and Charles excused himself. As soon as he opened the door, he felt that same feeling clawing at his insides. “Hi Charles.” Jeremy Martin a tall blond-haired boy stood in front of him suited up with a sunflower in his hand.

*Hello, who’s the flower for?”

“Y/n. She likes these.”

“Mhm, she tells you that?” Charles smirked slightly knowing that she hated sunflowers.

“Not exactly but I’ve seen her drawing them.”

“Well come in,” he ushered the young man in. “They should be down any minute.”

Charles led him through the foyer to join his brother but as he reached the stairs and looked up, he lost his breath. Clara and y/n were making their way down to them and he had never seen her look so beautiful. Her long brown hair flowed down her back in waves, just the slightest hint of makeup to enhance her features. She was wearing a long strapless black dress the hugged her in all the right places. Seeing her like this made him feel something he shouldn’t have towards his friend. She had a soft smile on her face, but he knew it wasn’t directed at him as she was looking at Jeremy.

“Wow you both look amazing.” Arthur was the first to react taking his girlfriend’s hand.

“Merci,” Clara kissed his cheek.

“Hi y/n. You look beautiful.” Jeremy smiled as he too took her hand.

“Guys, you should get going or you’re going to be late.” Pascale reminded them as she and Sylvie approached from behind the girls.

“You’re right.” Arthur nodded placing his hand on Clara’s back. “We’ll see you guys later.”

Y/n quickly kissed both her mother and Pascale on the cheeks goodbye before threading her arm through Jeremy’s outstretched arm. She smiled softly at Charles as she passed him.

He wanted to say something, anything but his mouth was dry. Pascale noticed but would wait till they were alone to say anything. “Shouldn’t you be going as well? Last I checked you had some function.”

Charles cleared his throat and looked at his mother. “Right,” he kissed her and Sylvie. “I’ll see you later.”

Few hours Later:

“You having fun?” Jeremy asked as they were dancing.”

“Yes, I am,” she smiled. She really was having a lot of fun and enjoyed his company. They had only been hanging out for a few weeks, but she really liked him. It didn’t hurt that for the most part she was able to move on from Charles, not completely but it was a start.

“Good. You know for a minute I thought you were going to say no to me.”

She lifted her head to look at him. “Why would I do that?”

“Charles Leclerc.”

“What does he have to do with anything?”

He gave her a pointed look, “Well he seems very protective over you.”

“He just looks out for me.”

“I’m sure.”

“What does that mean?” she asked getting a bit irritated.

He shrugged, “Nathan told me the only reason he didn’t ask you out again was because of Charles. I wanted to see it for myself.”

“See what exactly?” she asked moving away from him.

“How he would react.”

“So, you asked me out to see how Charles would react?” she crossed her arms.

Jeremy quickly tried to back track, “NO! I asked you out because I like you.”

She huffed, “Not what it sounds like.”

“Y/n,” he reached for her hand, but she moved further away. “I'm sorry.”

“It's fine. I'm kinda tired of dancing. I'm going to get a drink.” She forced a smile and made her way over to their table where some of her other friends were sitting.

“How’s things going with Jeremy?” Stacey Keliso, her redhaired friend asked.

“OK.”

“Just, ok?”

“Let's not talk about it.”

“Ok, now I need to know.”

Y/n rolled her eyes and sat down. “Why does everyone just want to get to know me to get close to Charles Leclerc?”

Stacey’s boyfriend Rafe Benedetti chuckled beside her. “He’s famous.”

“Wow how perceptive.” sarcasm dripped out Y/n voice. “You’d think I wasn’t aware.”

He shrugged his shoulders, “Just pointing out the obvious.”

“What exactly did he say?” Stacey asked shushing her man.

“He mentioned that Charles is the reason Nathan ghosted me.”

“I’m not surprised.” Rafe replied.

“What?” Y/n asked.

“Never mind.”

She shook her head, “No no. Tell me.”

“We’ll,” he sat forward. “I’ve seen the way he gets when a guy talks to you. He can get very territorial.”

Y/n closed her eyes while pinching the bridge of her nose. “I can't wait to move.”

“Move?”

She opened her eyes in shock and turned around to see Arthur standing behind her. “Did I say that out loud?” she turned back to Stacy who nodded.

“Where are you going?” Arthur asked taking a seat next to her.

“Rafe, I wanna dance?” Stacy stood up and grabbed her boyfriend’s hand.

“I thought your feet were sore,” he remarked clueless.

“They feel better,” she dragged him to his feet and give her friend a smile.

“You weren’t meant to hear that, not yet anyway.” Y/n sadly looked at her best friend.

Arthur watched her intently. “Talk.”

She took a deep breath, “I got in.”

His eyes widen, “The Royal College of Art.” She nodded causing him to breakout into a huge grin. “Y/n,” he stood up and pulled her with him hugging her tightly. “Why wouldn't you tell me? I know how much you wanted this.”

“It means I'm leaving Monaco.”

“Only for a bit. London is not that far, and we will have holidays and visits.” he looked at her pride on his face. “This is amazing.”

“Really?”

He hugged her tighter in response. “But you have to make sure to come to any races in London and definitely home races.”

She laughed, “Wouldn’t miss them for anything.”

“Good Charles is going to flip.”

“You are too!”

“What?”

“Nothing. Would it be rude if I leave early?” she asked.

“Why? Is everything okay?”

“Yep, all good, just kind of tired and it's not as fun as I had hoped.”

“You want me to come with?”

She loved that he cared so much about her, but she knew that he was having fun, there was no way she was going to spoil it for him. “Nope, you have fun. I need to go find Jeremy.”

‘Okay, call me later,” he replied sternly.

She nodded.

A couple weeks later having graduated y/n and Arthur were taking a much-needed break before heading their separate ways for the time been. After the dance she had let everyone know about college and her move to London, everyone except Charles. He had been too busy with Formula one to make it home for graduation. But this weekend the two families were going to get together at the lake house to enjoy one last weekend together. She was excited to see him.

“Hey y/n, I need to tell you something.” Arthur helped drop off her bags.

“Sure. What's up Art?”

“Charlotte is coming.”

Y/n tried hard to not physically react even though she felt her heart sink. “Oh.” Is all she said. It wasn’t that she didn’t like the girl, but she had been hoping to spend time with him before she left. She wasn’t sure how long it would be before she saw him again.

“I only find out on the way here.”

She turned to a friend and forced a smile hoping he wouldn’t notice. “It’s all good Arthur. She’s cool.”

He looked at her, eyes narrowed. “You seem ok with it.”

She shrugged turning back to her bag. “Why wouldn’t I be? They’ve been together a while.”

“Ya but....”

She rolled her eyes before shushing him with a finger to the lip. “I'm a big girl. He’s going to have a girlfriend. I accepted that it's never going to be me.”

“Wish it was,” he mumbled as he walked out the room. Charles was an idiot, but it was his life.

“It’s going to be nice to see everyone,” Charlotte smiled looking at her boyfriend.

He nodded in agreement glancing quickly back at her before turning into the driveway of the house.

“Wow! It’s beautiful.”

“It is. I love coming here. It’s like my own private getaway. I, Art and y/n used to drag our mothers here as much as possible when we were kids.”

Charlotte rolled her eyes at the mention of the other girl making sure to hide her dislike for the girl from Charles. She was jealous of y/n. Charles was her boyfriend and she didn’t like how close he was to the other girl. But if she wanted to be with him, she knew she had to play nice.

She spotted Charles’ mother and older brother at a car as the came to a stop. Hopping out the car she quickly made her way over. “Bonjour Pascale, Lorenzo.” She gave each one a hug something Pascale noticed seem forced.

“Hi Charlotte,” Lorenzo greeted. “Nice to see you again.”

“Yes, lovely to see you.” Pascale smiled lightly at the girl. Her smile only growing once her son got to her. “Charles.”

“Hi Maman.” He kissed her cheek. He greeted his brother as well.

The sound of laughter made him turn towards the lake only for his heart to start bearing faster. Making their way towards them was Arthur and Y/n. She was wearing a white sundress that reached her knees and she had the biggest smile on her face he had ever seen. Suddenly he felt a tinge of jealousy towards his brother knowing he had made her laugh. Spotting him, y/n’s smile grew wider, and she picked up the pace.

“Mon Cherie,” he pulled her into him and spun her round causing her to burst out laughing once again making his heart leap.

“Hi.” A soft cough causes they two friends to separate. “Hi Charlotte.” y/n gave her a small smile.

“Hi.” The latter responded feeling annoyance with the younger girl. She made sure to place her hand around her boyfriend’s waist.

Y/n stepped away from him and felt Arthur next to her. “So how have you been?” she asked.

“Good, Charles and I had so much fun in Australia. It’s such a pity you guys couldn’t join us.”

Y/n choose to ignore the sarcasm in the other girl’s voice something only she seemed to pick up on. “Well, I’m glad you are here,” she replied even though she wasn’t telling the truth. It still hurt to see him with someone else.

Over the next few days, she had tried to get a minute alone with Charles, she wanted to tell him about London, but Charlotte made sure to keep him so busy that she never got a chance. Tonight, was their last night together before he had to get back to Formula 1 and she was leaving for London at the end of the week. The two families had just enjoyed a nice dinner together when Arthur decided that they needed to go out and enjoy the last night. The younger group made their way to the local bar while their mothers headed back to the house. It was here that they ran into Pierre Gasly.

“Where’s your sister?” he asked Y/n as they all enjoyed a drink.

“She and Marcus are enjoying a trip in the Maldives. His boss’s idea.”

He took a sip. “They gonna be back before you leave?”

She shrugged, “Not like it matters. She doesn’t really care much.”

“Where are you going?” Charlotte asked. Charles was currently in the men’s room, so Y/n told her making sure to inform her not to tell Charles as she was going to do it herself. The topic was soon dropped as soon as the latter reappeared. “Let's dance.” Charlotte took his hand and dragged him to the dance floor. He looked at his friends in surprise.

“Let's get a refill,” Pierre stood up. She swiftly grabbed his outstretched hand. “When are you going to tell him?”

She narrowed her eyes at him. “It’s not like I'm hiding it from him. I just haven't had the chance.”

“Well good luck.” he grimaced before pointing behind her.

Charles was making his way over to them and he looked pissed. Before she could even think he silently grabbed her hand and practically dragged her outside. When he looked at her, she felt her heart sink. She knew he could get angry; she had seen it whenever something went wrong at a race. However, he had never looked at her the way he did now.

“Were you going to tell me, or just sneak off and think I wouldn't notice?”

She should have known Charlotte would spill. “I was going to tell you. There just hasn’t been a chance.”

“A Chance? Y/n you have known for months!”

“We’ve both been busy. Not to mention I haven't seen you in a while.”

“Oh, so now it's my fault?” he snapped.

“That’s not what I said.”

“Then what?” he retorted. “Everyone else seems to know, even Pierre it seems, and he has also been busy.”

“Charles,” she placed a hand on his shoulder. “I’m sorry.”

When he looked into her eyes, she could see both pain and anger in them. “When?”

“At the end of the week.”

He nodded. “Well, I guess you won't be at the race on Sunday.”

“Charlotte will be there. You won't even miss me,”

“She’s not you,” he mumbled.

“What?” she wasn’t sure she had heard him right.”

“Forget it. Go live your wonderful life in London.”

She tried to stop him as he made to walk away but he just brushed past her back into the bar. She felt the tears sting her eyes. Why did it have to be this hard and why did it feel like she had just lost her friend?

First go read The Girls I've Been. Then Five Times We Almost Kissed. Then Barb Wire Heart. Tess Sharpe is such a fantastic writer - and the heart of her books is always people making the best choices they can when none of the choices are good or easy. Also, Barb Wire Heart is kind of like if S2 of Justified had been about the women.

6 - Anna-Marie McLemore - Flawless Girls

The Soler sisters are infamous in polite society—brazen, rebellious, and raised by their fashionable grandmother who couldn’t care less about which fork goes where. I will read anything they write. No questions asked. They're books are always so gorgeous and lush.

7 - Kristin Cashore - There is a Door in This Darkness

Wilhelmina Hart is part of the infamous class of 2020. Her high school years began with the election of Donald Trump and they ended with COVID. Now Wilhelmina, like so many of her peers, is in limbo, having deferred college because of the pandemic. This is a loss she felt so keenly that she’s spent the last years deep in her personal depression, only obscured by the seemingly endless waves of national trauma. I love Kristin Cashore's Graceling novels, so I'm curious about this.

9 - Margaret Owen - Holy Terrors

third book in the Little Thieves series - which on the surface is a heist story about what if the protagonist of the Goose Girl was the servant not the princess. And at it's heart is about recovering from trauma and loss, and learning how to let yourself be someone different.
