The moment Tony saw his baby brother, carefully swaddled in their mothers arms he knew they were soulmates. His first look into Peters eyes filled Tony's world with colour and he knew that Peter himself would never know a world in grey-scale.
Sure he knew his dad was worried about what this meant, Tony had overheard him talking with Jarvis behind a closed door but that didn't matter to him. Tony had his Peter and he would do anything for him and would gladly defend Peter from anything that would hurt him. So his dad didn't have to worry because Tony was there to protect them both.
They were simply meant to be.

That Herrmann/Halstead DNA (Chapter Five)
Summary: This is Part Twenty-One of my series A Herrmann/Halstead Production. It is an AU where Christopher Herrmann's mom had an affair with Pat Halstead resulting in a baby. The series follows this OC character (Rebecca "Bex" Herrmann) as she grows up and gets to know her brothers and the various Chicago teams. It is very much an AU, just to underscore that. It doesn't follow the same timeline and characters will follow different paths.
Click here for the Series Rundown where you can find the links to read all of the previous installments (which I highly recommend you do so that this one makes sense.)

Chapter One Chapter Two Chapter Three Chapter Four
Chapter Five
Two hours later
***
Al
After leaving Lexi with the gang upstairs, Al made his way down to Bex’s room. He rapped softly on the door and entered when he heard the quiet call to come in.
Seeing Bex in that bed was like a punch in the gut. She’d been in rough shape on the scene, but now that she was cleaned up, the marks on her were that much starker. It was only years of being on the job that allowed him to school his face into a semblance of a smile.
“Hey, champ,” he said, stepping over to her. “How you doing?”
“Oh, I’m fine,” Bex said, her voice muffled by the oxygen mask as she blinked at him slowly.
Ah. Drugged up to high heaven then. Probably for the best.
“Me and the crew finished up our shifts and brought a bunch of food,” Al said. “Figured everyone would be starving by now.”
Right on cue, Jay’s stomach growled.
“You’re not wrong,” Chris chuckled. He and Cindy were on a little couch off to the side, her feet up on his lap while he massaged them. Jay and Will were sprawled out in two chairs on one side of the bed while Mouse was tucked in close on the other side of it. He was leaning half off his chair, head propped up on one elbow on the bed, his free hand wrapped around Bex’s arm. All of them looked exhausted despite the good front they were putting up.
“Well, we got burgers and sandwiches and fries and other good stuff,” Al said. “I can bring some down to you or if you want to go up—”
“You should go up,” Bex said. “Check on everyone for me. Please?”
“I can stay,” Mouse offered. “You guys go ahead and I’ll grab a bite later.”
“Maybe see if there’s any updates while we’re up there?” Chris said quietly and Will nodded.
Al knew they were still waiting to hear about Emery, but considering how badly injured she’d been, he figured no news was good news. No news meant they were still working on her and he could keep hoping.
She was a good kid. He was putting a lot of power into those hopes.
“Jay, Jay,” Bex mumbled at him as he stood and he moved closer, leaning in to hear what she had to say.
“Yeah, Bex?”
“Bring me fries.”
Jay barked out a laugh. “You want fries?”
“Yes.” Bex pulled down her mask to nod solemnly at him. “Fries will cure me.”
Al had to smother his own laughter as Jay immediately agreed and Will dragged a hand down his face.
“Seriously, guys?” Will groaned.
“No, Will, trust me,” Bex said to him, eyes wide. “It’s medicine.”
“It’s medicine, Will,” Jay repeated, biting his lip trying to maintain a serious face.
“You can have some fries if you keep your mask on until they arrive,” Will said, pointing a stern finger at Bex who immediately started putting it back in place. Mouse reached up to help her get it set, shaking his head as he smiled at her.
“Thank you,” she said, eyes fluttering as sleep started pulling her back under again.
“Alright, come on.” Chris stood up and reached out to help Cindy to her feet. “Let’s get some medicine and regroup.”
“We’re not calling it—okay, fine, yeah, let’s go,” Will said, rolling his eyes with a little chuckle. He held the door as they all filed out into the hallway.
Al waited until they were closer to the elevator to share the rest of his news. “Voight’s on his way back too. He’s got the detective in charge of the case with him and she’s gonna want to interview everyone.”
“Bex isn’t up for it,” Will said immediately. “Not tonight.”
“That’s what we figured, but maybe you? And Hailey?” They’d had a front row seat to things, so to speak, and getting that info while it was fresh in their minds would be important.
“Yeah,” Jay stepped onto the elevator and jabbed a finger at the button. “Might as well get it over with.”
“It’ll help Bex,” Al said quietly as he came to stand beside him. To them it was a clear-cut case of self defense, but put it in the hands of a scum bag lawyer and anything could happen. The more evidence they had on their side, the better.
“I know.” Jay sighed, rubbing at his eyes. “Whatever’s needed, count me in.”
Al clapped him on the shoulder in thanks. In solidarity. Whatever was needed went both ways.
The elevator dinged and they all shuffled off as the doors opened. The lounge where their crew was set up was only a little ways down the hall.
He gave Lexi a smooch on the head, checking in with her as he went by, but she seemed okay enough with Bex’s friends. She gave him a tiny head shake to let him know they hadn’t heard anything yet.
Still hope, he reminded himself.
Al let the others get Jay and his family settled with food. Platt was sitting off in a corner by herself looking like the last thing she wanted was company.
He made his way over.
“You get something to eat?” he asked as he settled into the chair beside her.
“Not hungry,” she said, shaking her head.
“You know the only way to get through a crisis is with a full stomach. I can grab you a sandwich or a muffin—”
“I said I’m not hungry, Al,” she snapped.
He held up his hands, eyebrows raised. “Alright. Let me know if you change your mind.” Al kept his mouth shut, waiting her out, until—
“I just—I keep going over it,” she said, staring hard at the carpet, tearing at the rim of the empty coffee cup in her hands. “Something should have come through, right? It should have hit my desk or been a phone call—something. So, what did I miss? When did I miss it? If we’d known Ty was out even an hour earlier—”
“Hey, hang on.” Al turned in his seat to face her. “This is not on you.”
“But if I missed—”
“You didn’t miss anything,” Al said. He’d put money on it. “This is—you know what it’s like. Agencies like Victim Services, they got no budget and hardly any staff all trying to cover a mountain of cases. Stuff falls through the cracks. We put the blame where it belongs.”
“I’d like to clock that prick myself,” she muttered.
“Get in line,” Al said. That got the tiniest grin out of her. He’d take it. He leaned back in his seat and stretched out his legs. “Still no word, eh?”
Trudy shook her head, sighing.
“Emery, she’s a good kid,” Al said. “She’s been helping Lexi.”
“Oh, yeah?”
He nodded. “Pretty sure Lexi’s boyfriend is on his way to being the same flavour of shitburger as Ty, but Emery kind of took her under her wing and helped her navigate some stuff.” Helped their whole family navigate some stuff. “Lex went with her mom today and grabbed her stuff from that loft place they were staying at. She’s moving back home.”
For the first time in months, Al felt like he could finally breath again.
Thanks to Emery.
“Yeah, she’s a good kid.”
***
Jay
Jay was digging into a burger, filling Sam in on Al’s news, when Julie showed up.
“Oh, food,” she said, collapsing into the chair on Sam’s other side and swiping a few of his fries. “Thank god.”
“You just got off shift?” Sam asked, handing over half of his sandwich to her.
Julie nodded, humming around her mouthful. “They finally sent someone to take over watch duty,” she said, grimacing. “Really glad to not be around that asshole anymore.”
“Hey!”
They all looked up to see Shay and Brett hurrying into the lounge. Shay bent down to give Julie a kiss while Brett detoured over to see Kev. “Any news?” Shay asked them.
“Nothing yet,” Jay said.
She sighed, pulling out her phone to check the time. “We dropped someone off downstairs and the Chief gave us permission to swing by and see how things were going, but we can’t stay long. We’ve got like, five minutes so talk fast. How’s Bex?”
“In and out.” Jay poked at his fries, making a mental note to swing by the caf for some fresh ones before he went back to her room. “They’ve got her on a lot of pain meds. Tomorrow’ll be worse.” He’d been in Bex’s place before and she did not have a fun road ahead.
“We’ll say hi before we go,” Shay said, munching on a fry she’d stolen from Sam. Jay shot him a commiserating look and shook some of his own onto the poor guy’s plate.
Shay stood up abruptly and Jay noticed everyone else starting to do the same, all of them going quiet. He looked around only to scramble out of his own chair to join Will.
Connor and Dr. Latham were walking down the hall, headed their way.
They both looked exhausted as hell, but beyond that, Jay couldn’t get a sense of whether or not they were coming to give them good news or bad.
Jay took a shaky breath and braced himself for the worst.
***
Will
Will searched Connor’s face as he approached, looking for some kind of clue for how things went, but Connor wouldn’t even meet his eyes.
Maybe that was enough of a clue right there.
Will’s stomach sank.
Fuck.
This—this wasn’t fair. It wasn’t right. How was he supposed to go down and tell Bex that…that her friend was dead.
Will honestly didn’t know if he could.
He looked back at Connor wishing he could wrap him up in the hug they both desperately needed when he realized—Connor wasn’t avoiding his eyes. He was searching the crowd.
Looking for Bex.
Will caught the flicker of alarm the passed over his face when he realized she wasn’t there. Then he sought out Will, brows pulled together in a frown.
‘Long story’, Will mouthed at him. ‘Later.’
Connor frowned even further, but nodded…and gave Will the tiniest of grins.
Oh.
Oh.
His brain had barely wrapped around the emotional one-eighty it was going through when Dr. Latham cleared his throat.
“Family of Emery Hughes?”
“Here,” Kira said, voice thick with anxiety as she pushed to the front of the group. “It’s, uh, all of us. We’re her family. Is she—is Emery okay?”
“Ms. Hughes successfully made it through surgery,” Dr. Latham said, pausing while the wave of excitement and relief passed through their little group. “Her injuries and the amount of blood lost were quite severe though and she coded a number of times during her procedure. The next forty-eight hours will be crucial. We’ll be keeping a close eye on her.”
“Are we allowed to see her?” Malia asked.
“Not yet,” Dr. Latham said. “She has some post-op procedures to go through and then she’ll be moved to the ICU. Visitors will be allowed there on a limited basis. Dr. Rhodes can answer any further questions. Thank you.” He nodded at them all before walking away.
There was a moment of calm while everyone took that in and then they all converged on Connor, asking question after question which he answered as best he could. The problem was, in a situation like this, most of the answers were ‘we don’t know’ and ‘we’ll have to wait and see.’
After getting what details they could, it devolved into variations on the same questions which was helping no one.
“Okay, back up, back up,” Will said, wading in to give Connor some space. “We know all we can so far. Sit tight, make sure you get something to eat, and someone will be by to let us know when Emery can have visitors. I’ve got to fill Connor in on…everything else so just…give us a moment. Please.”
Kira and Malia darted in to give Connor hugs and whispered thanks, but then joined the rest of them in taking a seat. Chris and Cindy gave him hugs next. “Make sure you get something to eat too,” Cindy said to him before following Chris back to their spot by Trudy and Al.
He looked over at Will, more than a bit bewildered. “Fill me in on what? Where’s Bex? What happened?”
“Come over here.” Will grabbed his hand and took him over to a quieter corner of the lounge. Jay followed. Between the two of them, they managed to relay the full story of what had gone down leaving Connor even paler than before.
“So, uh, she’s been admitted?” Connor asked, closing his eyes briefly as he rubbed at his forehead. “But she’s okay?”
“She will be.” Will scooched closer to wrap an arm around his shoulders.
“You want to go down and see for yourself?” Jay asked as he stood up.
“Yes,” Connor said, voice cracking. He pressed his face into his hands. “Oh, my god, this day.”
“We’ll go in a bit,” Will whispered to Jay who nodded and backed away. “Hey.” Will leaned in to rest his head against Connor’s. “Let’s go somewhere private?”
Connor nodded and together they ducked down the hall into the thankfully empty nurses’ lounge.
As soon as the door was shut behind him, Connor was pacing the room. “We almost lost her so many times,” he said, scrubbing a hand over his face. “At one point, I thought—I thought we wouldn’t get her back. Latham tried to kick me out and I fought him every time. Hard. Pretty sure I’m getting written up for that, but I couldn’t leave her—I couldn’t—” He stopped suddenly and turned to Will, tears filling his eyes. “I told him she wasn’t family, Will, I said—”
“It was the only way he would’ve let you in there,” Will said, fully understanding Connor’s angst over that. They might not be related by blood, but over the past few months, he and Connor and Bex and Emery had become their own weird little family unit. “You did what you had to, Con. You saved her.”
The tears finally fell then as Connor face-planted into Will’s neck, wrapping his arms around him and Will hugged him back tight.
They stood there like that for a long while as Will let himself have a good cry of his own.
They weren’t okay. Not yet.
But they would be.
***
Connor
Connor pulled away eventually, wiping at his cheeks as he sniffled. “I can’t believe I missed everything with Bex too,” he said. “You said she’s got a pulmonary contusion? How often are they checking her stats? Is the bleed—”
“Babe.” Will took his hands and gave them a squeeze. “We’ve been on top of it, don’t worry. She’s been checked multiple times and Dr. Fahir is keeping a close eye on her.”
Right. They would’ve had to hand her off from the ED staff. Part of Connor hated that they couldn’t be the ones looking after her, but he’d crossed paths with Dr. Fahir a few times and she was excellent. At least Bex was in good hands.
And they could still check in on her.
“Let’s go see her,” he said, swooping in for one more hug from Will. “We can let her know about Emery.”
“It’ll be a big weight off of her mind.” Will held him close, giving him a quick kiss before releasing him. “She asks if there’s any news every time she wakes up.”
They headed back out to the lounge to let everyone know where they were going and Jay hopped up to come with them.
“I want to make sure Mouse goes and gets something to eat,” he said on the way to the elevator. “You guys should too after you’ve seen Bex.”
“What is it you and Bex say?” Will said, waving a hand as he searched for the words. “Okay, Mama Chicken.” He laughed while Jay rolled his eyes.
“Bex is too drugged up to boss anyone around so someone has to do it,” Jay said.
“Too drugged up to boss anyone around?” Will smirked at him. “I seem to recall a demand for fries earlier…”
“Ah, crap.” Jay reached over and hit the button for the caf floor. “Forgot about that.”
“It’s Bex’s medicine,” Will told Connor, managing to hold a serious face for about two seconds before his lips started to twitch.
Connor laughed, leaning into his side. Oh, she was definitely drugged up. An under-the-influence Bex was a snacky Bex.
They got off on Bex’s floor, leaving Jay to his fry mission, and headed for her room. Will knocked quietly before letting them in.
Bex was sleeping and Connor—he was grateful for that. He needed a minute to get himself together. Will and Jay had both been clear about her injuries and he’d seen Emery for himself, but the double whammy of seeing Bex right after all of that…it was a bit overwhelming.
He grabbed Will’s hand, squeezing it as they came over to the bed.
“The doc came by while you guys were away,” Mouse said quietly. “She said Bex’s stats looked pretty good and said she could ditch the mask for this tube-y thing.” He gestured at the nasal cannula.
“That’s good,” Will said. He shot Connor a little smile. “She kept taking it off to talk anyway.”
“Any, uh, any news about Emery?” Mouse asked. “Bex was asking again.”
“Yeah, actually.” Connor grinned at him, happy to be able to share some good news after what they’d all been through. “She’s in recovery right now. Still going to be touch and go for awhile, but I’m hopeful.”
“Wha’s going on?” Bex blinked at them groggily. Her eyes landed on Connor and they widened as she focused on him. “Connor! What’s happening? How’s—ah!” She clutched her side, groaning from the pain of trying to sit up. Mouse beat him and Will to it as he helped ease her back onto her pillow.
Will made space for Connor to move up on the other side of the bed and get closer to her.
“Emery made it through surgery,” Connor told her, getting right to the point so she’d hopefully relax a little bit.
“She did?” Bex asked, voice shaky. She reached out with a bandaged hand to clutch at his. “She’s okay?”
“We need to keep an eye on her,” Connor said. He didn’t want to lie in case things took a turn. He was hoping for the best, but he was also well aware of the risks. “She lost a fair amount of blood, Bex, and the knife hit her lungs and intestine and almost hit her heart. We had to do a lot of repairs. We’ll be watching for infection, further bleeding—the next couple of days will be critical and we’ll be keeping her sedated so she can heal.”
“Oh, god.” Bex’s head fell back against the bed, tears streaming down her cheeks. “So, she’s—she’s not okay—”
“She’s alive,” Connor said firmly. “We’re doing everything we can to keep her that way and I don’t know if you’ve noticed this, but we’re pretty determined around here.”
That got a weak laugh out of her.
Connor gently squeezed her hand. “I’ll be with her as much as I can,” he said. “You focus on resting and getting yourself healed up.”
“Okay.” Bex sniffed. “I don’t know how I’m supposed to heal without fries though.”
“Jay is literally getting them as we speak,” Will exclaimed. “Despite my better judgement, I might add.”
Bex beamed at him before turning back to Connor. “Thank you,” she said, smile still a bit wet. “For saving her. I don’t know what I’d do—I just—” She sighed as she held out her arms. “I just really need a hug now please.”
“Good because I do too.” Connor leaned in for the most careful hug he could possibly give her. “Love you, Bex,” he whispered in her ear.
“Love you too,” she whispered back.
“Knock, knock,” Jay called out as he popped his head through the door.
“Fries!” Bex cheered.
Connor released Bex and cleared out of the way for the treasured snack. “She’s in better spirits than I thought she’d be,” he murmured to Will who raised an eyebrow at him.
“Pretty sure the pain meds and the shock are holding back the worst of it,” Will said quietly. “I think it’s going to hit her hard sooner rather than later.”
“We’ll help her through it,” Connor said. “In the meantime…”
“We have fries,” Will finished for him with a little grin.
***
Bex
Bex didn’t care what Will said. These fries were making her feel at least thirty percent better.
Jay had managed to convince him and Connor to go and take a break and grab a bite to eat. Now he was working on Mouse.
“I’ll stay right here,” Jay said. “It’s been hours since lunch, man. You need to get something.”
“I recommend the fries,” Bex told him.
“Yes,” Mouse said, lips twitching. “A few times now.” His phone beeped and he pulled it out to check the text, frowning down at the screen.
“Everything okay?” Bex asked, mentally crossing her fingers that it was because they really didn’t need anymore disasters today.
“Yeah, uh, Ed’s here,” Mouse said, sounding more than a little surprised by that. “I texted him to let him know what was going on and I guess he wanted to check on us in person?”
“Aw, that’s nice,” Bex said. She liked Ed. “He’s nice. You should go say thank you.”
“You heard the lady,” Jay said, nodding at the door. “Take a little break, Mouse. We’ll be here when you get back.”
Mouse looked torn, glancing between her and Jay and his phone. “I can just text him,” he began and Bex reached out to pat at his arm.
“I’ll be fine,” she said. “Jay’s here. You should have snacks. Snacks are good.”
“You make a pretty good case for them.” Mouse smiled down at her, brushing her hair back from her forehead before leaning in to give her a kiss. “I’ll be quick, I promise.”
“Take a proper break,” Bex said, trying to make sure he was listening because this was important.
“I’m listening,” Mouse whispered back. He chuckled a bit and oh, jeez—was she talking her thoughts again? “Yeah,” he said. “It’s okay. I like it.” He gave her one more kiss before straightening up and giving Jay one of those back-slappy bro hugs they did. “I’ll be back soon,” he promised.
Jay plopped down into the empty seat on her right once Mouse left, leaning back with one foot up on the edge of the bed. “How are those fries?” he asked, grinning at her.
“Best fries of my life,” she said, nudging the container along the little table in his direction. “Want some?”
“Nah, I grabbed some food upstairs. Thanks though for offering to share the precious.” His laugh turned into a giant yawn. “Oh, man. ‘scuse me.”
Bex tilted her head and took a good look at him. He was putting on a good show with the jokes and the smiles, but his eyes were red, his shoulders were tight, and he looked about two seconds away from passing out in his chair. “You can take a nap on the couch if you want.”
“Hm?” Jay straightened up, shooting her a look. “A nap? No, no, I’m good. Happy to hang out right here.” His eyes passed over here, pausing on all the marks she was sporting. “I’m not going anywhere,” he said softly.
“You know I’m not going anywhere either,” she blurted out, her filter apparently completely off.
Jay stilled. “I know—”
“I mean, I’m okay—or I’m going to be and you don’t have to worry—”
“Bex.” Jay lowered his foot and sat forward in his chair, catching her gaze in his. “I’m always gonna worry. That’s just how it is.”
A wave of guilt rose up in Bex for what she’d put him through today. “I’m sorry,” she whispered. He opened his mouth and she shook her head before he could argue. “No, just listen,” Bex said. She held out her bandaged hand and he took it carefully, gently squeezing her fingertips. “I’m sorry I didn’t listen to you today and that you had to hear…everything. I can’t—I’m not sorry for going in because I had to, Jay. I couldn’t leave her alone. I couldn’t—”
“I know,” Jay said quickly. “I get it. I do.”
“I just—I’m sorry you had to go through that,” she said. “I’m sorry I scared you.”
“You’re sorry—” Jay’s voice caught and he shook his head. “Bex, you did nothing wrong, okay? You were—oh, my god, you were so brave. You saved Emery’s life. I’m sorry. I tried to get there as fast I could, but I’m sorry you were alone with him for so long—”
“No,” Bex cut him off as forcefully as she could. “You were the reason I could fight back. It was your training—you and Hailey—and knowing that you were coming? That—the whole time, that helped keep me going. So, thank you.”
Jay let out a shaky breath and swiped at the tears streaming down his face. “Scared the shit out of me, you know that?”
Bex nodded, tugging on his hand. “C’mere. Hug time.”
He moved in for one, mindful of her injuries, and gave her a little squeeze.
“You know I love you, right?” she whispered.
“Always,” he said. “I love you, too.”
“Don’t tell Will,” Bex said as he pulled away. “But I think the hugs might be working better than the fries.”
“How about both,” Jay laughed as he fell back into his seat. “Both sounds good to me.”
“Jay Halstead.” Bex fished out a fry and saluted him with it. “Certified genius.”
He snatched one up for himself and popped it in his mouth. “Hey.” His eyebrows flew up. “Those are good.” He reached for another one and Bex tried to bat his hand away.
“Noooo, not my medicine.”
***
Jay
“Who in their right mind left the two of you alone in here?” Chris called out over their laughter as he and Cindy came into the room.
“Ooooh,” Bex clutched at her side, heaving a breath. “People need to stop making me laugh.”
Crap. Jay instantly sobered, checking the numbers on her monitor like he knew what the hell he was even looking for. “Are you okay? Should I call someone?”
“I’m fine.” Bex waved him back into his seat. “I’m just sore. And I’d also probably be better if someone stopped stealing my fries.”
“Doctor’s orders were to rest, missy,” Cindy said sternly as she came over to press a kiss onto Bex’s forehead. “I’m heading home to tuck in the kids and grab some sleep, but I’ll be back first thing in the morning.”
“Okay,” Bex said. “Thank you for being here.”
“Oh, sweetheart, of course.” Cindy shot a look at Jay and Chris. “Take good care of her while I’m gone.”
“Yes, ma’am.” Jay nodded.
Chris and Cindy gave them both hugs; Chris promising to be back after he walked Cindy out to the van. Jay was barely settled back in his chair when Will entered.
“That was a fast meal,” Jay said.
Will shrugged. “Connor wanted to get back up to check on Emery and make sure her post-op is going well. And I wanted to get back to Bex.”
“Awwwwww,” Bex said around a mouthful of fry.
“No idea why,” Will rolled his eyes with a laugh.
Jay’s phone pinged and he pulled it out of his pocket. “Well, you have good timing,” he said as he scanned the message. “Voight’s here with the detective working the case. She wants to talk to us.”
“Me?” Bex asked quietly.
“No, not yet,” Jay said, quick to reassure her. “Your interview can wait a day or two and you’ll have someone with you for it, don’t worry.”
“Go on and see what she has to say,” Will said to him. “I’m good to hang out here.”
Jay couldn’t lie; he wanted to hear what this detective had planned. “If you’re okay with it—”
“Go.” Bex shooed at him. “We’re fine.”
“Okay, okay.” He gave them both hugs and headed for the door, calling over his shoulder. “Let Mouse know when he gets back!”
Voight had taken over a conference room the next floor up so Jay took the stairs, not having the patience to wait for the elevator. Everyone was already gathered there along with a few people he didn’t recognize.
“Jay, c’mere a sec,” Voight waved him over. “This is Detective Medeiros. She’s handling the case.” A dark-haired woman with kind eyes standing beside him offered a hand to Jay.
“Nice to meet you,” Jay said as he shook it.
“Likewise.” She took a step back to look around the room. “Now that we’re all here, let’s get started.” Detective Medeiros made her way to the front of the group. “First of all, I want to thank the Intelligence Unit for your fast response and for securing the scene. Excellent work all around.”
There were a few solemn nods, but Jay knew they were all dealing with the same lingering feelings he was. Fast, but not fast enough.
“My team and I will be meeting with everyone for interviews,” she continued. “The name of the game here is thoroughness so be prepared for that.” A gritty smile spread across her face. “We’re going to nail this bastard to the wall.”
Jay straightened up from where he’d been leaning against the wall, a matching smile forming on his own face.
Welcome to the team, Detective Medeiros.

Sam
The nurse led them over to the ICU and showed them Emery’s room. Kira and Sam had been elected first visitors by their group and Sam was both grateful and terrified.
He wanted to see her. Wanted to be able to reassure himself that she was still here, but—
The way she’d looked the last time he’d seen her.
Feeling her ribs crack under his hands as he tried to force life back into her.
He wasn’t sure if he could if he could see her right know, knowing he’d been a part of the damage she faced.
Kira grabbed his hand, giving it a squeeze and giving him no choice as she pulled him forward.
“Come on,” she whispered. “We need to let her know we’re here. Tell her she’s not alone.”
Sam nodded, managing to force his feet to follow Kira into the room because no matter what he was feeling, the last thing he wanted Emery to feel ever again was alone.
***
Will
Will settled into the chair beside Bex, chuckling at the dopey smile she gave him. “What?”
“You’re a good brother,” she said.
Maybe now.
Not always.
“Stop that,” she said. “Stop with the face. And the thinking.” She frowned at him. “You’re awesome. And you help me. And I love you.”
“You’re awesome too,” Will said, reaching out to give her arm a little squeeze. “And you help me.” His throat started to get tight. “And I love you, too.”
He still couldn’t believe they’d almost lost her today.
He didn’t even want to imagine what that would have been like—couldn’t begin to wrap his brain around it.
“Well, that’s good then,” Bex said. “I like that.”
“Me too, Bex.”
They sat quietly like that for a few minutes, Will holding on to her arm, letting himself be sure of the fact that she was there when Bex piped up again.
“Will?”
His lips twitched. He knew that tone. “Yeah, Bex?”
“Will you get me some water? My medicine made me thirsty.”
“Oh, really?” Will laughed. “Your ‘medicine’ made you thirsty. What a shock.”
“Willllllllll.”
“I’m going!” He stood up and grabbed the pitcher from beside her bed. “I’ll even get you some ice from the nurses’ lounge since you like it cold.”
“Yes,” Bex cheered. “Thank you.”
“Anytime.” Will was pretty sure he was going to be doing anything to put a smile on her face for the foreseeable future.
He was just grateful she was still here to smile at him.

Voight
Detective Medeiros had stepped away to take a call, but her raised voice caught his attention.
“Why the hell am I only being told about this now?” she snarled into her phone. “I want additional units sent here—no, you have no way of knowing that. He could already be here. Additional units. Now. We need to cover the entrances and do a sweep. Tell them to report to me as soon as they arrive.”
Voight stepped over to her as she ended the call with a frustrated huff. “Something I should know about?”
Her head snapped up and her lips pressed into a hard line. “Yes, actually,” she said. “You and your people.”
“Twenty-one,” Voight called out, waving them over. “With me.”
Once everyone was gathered, Detective Medeiros took a deep breath before addressing them. “That was the team at Lakeshore,” she said. “Ty Anderson escaped police custody.”
“Are you fucking kidding me?” Halstead exclaimed. “How—”
“Let her explain and then we’ll figure out a plan,” Voight said, holding up a hand.
“The officer guarding Anderson uncuffed him when he took him to the adjoining washroom,” Detective Medeiros said, ignoring their muttered curses at that bit of news. “Anderson got the jump on him and knocked him out. He stole his uniform, gagged him, and left him cuffed to a support railing. They estimate he’s been in the wind for at least thirty minutes.”
“Fuck,” Halstead muttered, dragging a hand through his hair. “Fuck.”
“Wait,” Burgess said. “Stole his uniform—does that mean—”
“He also has the officer’s gun, yes,” Medeiros confirmed.
What a friggin’ shitshow.
“You got extra units coming?” Voight asked her and Medeiros made a face.
“I’m working on it,” she said. “The Lakeshore team is pressing for units to go to cover the bus and train stations, but I don’t think he’s running away.”
“He wouldn’t,” Upton spoke up. “He’ll be coming here. For Emery.”
“We can’t afford to wait for the extra units,” Medeiros began.
Voight nodded. “Anything you need,” he said. “My team and I are here to help.”
“Let’s start a co-ordinated sweep and I’ll loop in hospital security,” she said.
His team instantly leapt into action, picking up on the plan and piecing out the floors for the sweep. Voight watched them dive in with grim satisfaction.
That asshole Ty wasn’t going to cause anymore damage.
Not if they had any say in it.

Mouse
Mouse sat at a table in the cafeteria with Ed, working his way through a BLT and what was probably his eighth cup of coffee of the day. He’d just finished filling Ed in on the details of everything that’d happened and Ed clearly needed a minute to let it all sink in so Mouse was taking the opportunity to eat.
Turned out he was actually pretty starving.
“Christ, Mouse,” Ed finally spoke. He blinked, shaking his head. “That is—wow, man. I’m glad Bex is going to be okay and I—I really hope her friend makes it. That’s some heavy shit.” Ed put his elbows on the table and leaned in. “How are you?”
That was a loaded question. Mouse slowly chewed his last bite as he thought it over.
“Still freaking out a bit,” he said, trying to be honest. “I don’t think I’ve ever been so scared. And I—”
“You what,” Ed prompted him.
“I feel stupid,” Mouse confessed.
Ed frowned at him. “Why?”
“I know you guys said all of that stuff about how anything could happen to anyone, but I—I really never thought we’d be here…like this,” he said. “I always thought if anyone would be hurt, it was going to be me somehow. Me putting Bex through that. And now—not that I think Bex is putting me through this, you know—none of this is her fault—I just, I never really thought through being on this side of things and I-I don’t want to screw it up. I want to be there for her and help her and help her through this, but what if I make it worse or—”
“Mouse,” Ed interrupted him. “You’re not going to screw it up, bud. You’re already doing the most important thing. You’re here. That’s what matters most, okay?”
“I hate seeing her hurt,” Mouse said. “Not just in pain, but scared and upset, you know? I wish I could fix it. I know, I know—” He waved off whatever Ed was going to say next. “I know I can’t fix it and I know being here is helping her.” He sighed. “I just—I never want her to hurt.”
“One of the hardest parts of loving someone,” Ed said quietly. “You really are helping her just by being here though. I promise.” He eyed Mouse across the table. “It’s a stressful thing. How are you handling that side of it?”
Meaning, how was his sobriety handling it…
“It’s weird,” Mouse said and Ed gestured for him to go on. “Part of me was also sure something like this would send me spinning back off into, uh, bad habits, you know? But I don’t—the only urge I’m feeling is to be with Bex. Make sure she’s okay.”
“I get that.” Ed nodded. “And I’m not saying it’s a bad thing, but make sure you get your breaks in. Eat. Sleep. Don’t burn yourself out. If you guys need anything, we’re all happy to help out too. No question.”
“Bex was declaring what a nice guy you were before I came down here,” Mouse told him with a grin.
“Ah. Finally,” Ed said. “A sign of good taste from her.”
“Ha-ha.” Mouse tossed his napkin at him with a half-hearted throw. They didn’t chat for much longer—Mouse was itching to get back to Bex—and as they were leaving the caf, Ed handed over the tote bag he’d been carrying.
“From Lucy,” he explained as Mouse peeked inside. It looked like a bunch of…toiletries? “She thought you and Bex could use some supplies. We weren’t sure how long Bex would be here and you know how grungy you start to feel even after a day. There’s a whole bunch of stuff in there to freshen up or whatever. Socks too because Lucy said it’s always freezing in this place.”
Mouse couldn’t speak for a moment. It was times like this when it hit him how unbelievably lucky he’d been to find these people. “Thank you,” he managed to get out. “I—thank you, Ed. To you and Lucy. All of you.”
“We’re here for you, kid.” Ed patted his back with a gruff nod. “You and Bex.”
They walked out into the hallway and nearly ran into Kim. “Oh, Mouse,” she said, eyes going wide. “I didn’t realize you were down here and not with Bex—”
“What’s going on?” Alarm bells were going off in Mouse’s head. “What’s wrong?”
Kim got halfway through a story about Ty escaping custody and possibly heading their way before Mouse was running for the stairwell, Ed hot on his heels.
A floor away and out of the loop.
Again.
Mouse picked up the pace.
He wasn’t going to let anything stop him from getting to her this time.
***
Bex
The door to her room creaked open and Bex looked up. “Fastest water retrieval ever…” The words died on her lips when it wasn’t Will who came in.
It was Ty.
“What? How—”
“Nice to see you too, Bex,” he said, limping closer to the bed. He grinned ruefully at her. “Maybe not so nice since the last time we saw each other, you gave me this.” He reached up to poke at the bandage on the side of his head and Bex froze.
He had a gun in his hand.
She blinked at him, trying not to move. Now that she looked closer, he was wearing a patrol uniform that clearly didn’t fit him very well. What the hell was going on? How did he get away?
Oh, god, Will was coming back soon. He couldn’t hurt Will.
She had to get rid of him.
“What do you want, Ty?” Bex asked, her voice coming out a thousand times steadier than she felt.
“Emery,” he said, looming over her. “Where is she?”
No, no, no, Bex couldn’t let him anywhere near Emery.
“I—I don’t know—”
“Don’t lie to me, Bex.” Ty reached out, placing a hand where he’d kicked her and slowly pressed down. Hard.
She cried out, but Ty instantly placed his other hand over her mouth. The one holding the gun. Bex flinched back against the cold bite of metal against her lips as Ty shushed her.
“You need to be quiet, sweetheart,” he said, his thumb running through the tears running down her cheek. “We don’t want anyone coming in here and getting in the way.” He pushed at her side again and Bex stifled a scream as she felt something shift. “One more time. Where’s Emery?”
The sharpness of the pain cut through her foggy brain and Bex gathered herself. He was going to have to try and get through her and she’d already shown him she wouldn’t make it easy.
“She’s in the basement,” Bex snapped out. “Go down there and ask for the morgue.”
Ty stared at her before stepping back with a scoff. “Very funny. Try again.”
“Do you see me laughing?” Bex let her eyes fill with more tears which wasn’t hard considering the stabbing pain coming from her side. “You got exactly what you wanted. You killed her.”
Her heart pounded in her chest as Ty stared at her with narrowed eyes. “Interesting,” he said, tilting his head. “I can’t quite tell if this is the truth or if you’re sending me on a wild goose chase. Trying to buy yourself some time so your cop brother can swoop in and save the day again?”
“I’m not lying,” Bex whispered. She kept his stare, letting every ounce of hatred she felt for him show through. “You killed her, you fucking asshole.”
His eyes darkened and he grabbed her un-splinted arm, jerking her upright. “Shut up,” Ty growled when she yelped at the sudden movement. “Here’s what we’re going to do. I’ll go on your little field trip, but you’re coming with me. Insurance for when the cops show up.” He dragged her forward and Bex couldn’t stop the cry that slipped out. “Come on. Get the fuck up.”
“What the hell are you doing?” a second voice rang through the room.
Will.
***
Will
Will’s heart pounded as he took in the scene he’d walked in on. Ty, trying to drag Bex out of her bed, with a gun in his hand.
A gun that was now pointed in Will’s direction.
“Walk away, man,” Ty said.
“Just go, Will,” Bex whispered. “Please, please, go.”
“Sorry,” Will said, carefully setting the water jug down on the nearest chair and then raising his hands in the air. “But I don’t think I can do that.”
“Then you’re going to stay right there while Bex and I walk out that door,” Ty snapped out. He had an iron grip on Bex’s arm and kept jerking her forward, trying to get her on her feet. The leads connected to the monitor were getting pulled and her heart rate was going up. Alarms were going to go off any second sending an unsuspecting nurse their way.
“Where exactly are you two headed?” he asked, trying to wrack his brain for the safest way of getting out of this mess.
He wasn’t coming up with many options.
“Bex is going to show me the morgue,” Ty said. “She says that’s where Emery is. That true, Doc?”
Oh, smart, amazing Bex, thinking on her feet. “Yeah, it’s true,” Will said, frowning at Ty. “She didn’t make it through surgery. But…listen…”
Bex wasn’t the only one who could think on her feet.
“Taking Bex with you,” Will said. “That’s not going to get you to the morgue.” He shook his head, pointing at Bex. “You try dragging a patient down the hall like that, you’re going to get stopped before you get to the elevator.”
“So?” Ty gripped Bex closer. “Only need her for a shield anyway.”
“How about a shield and a cover story?” Will gestured to himself. “No one’s going to ask questions about an officer walking down the hall with a doctor. I can get you there.”
He’d figure out the rest on the way.
“Will,” Bex gasped out. “No.”
“You’ll get me down there,” Ty repeated. Slowly. Maybe his head injury was catching up with him. Will could try and use that in his favour.
“I can,” Will agreed. “On one condition; you don’t hurt Bex.”
Ty thought it over for a few seconds before he released Bex’s arm and shoved her back on the bed. “Deal,” he said. Will didn’t even get to breathe a sigh of relief before Ty was swinging his arm out and bringing the butt of the gun down over Bex’s head.
She slumped against the pillow, unconscious as a trickle of blood flowed down onto the fabric.
“You said you wouldn’t hurt her,” Will lurched forward.
He was stopped in his tracks by Ty leveling the gun at him and clicking off the safety. “Be happy I didn’t kill her,” he said. “Now move.”
Ty stepped towards him, shoving the gun into Will’s side and propelling him toward the door. Will opened it and they moved out into the hallway.
As he’d predicted, no one gave them a second look.
This time of night, there weren’t too many people around anyway, thank goodness. There was the faint sound of voices coming down the hall and Will picked up the pace. He didn’t want anyone else caught up in whatever was about to happen.
The two of them walked quickly down the hall toward the elevators. It was dinging before Will had a chance to touch the call button and the doors opened up—
To reveal Connor inside.
No, no, no.
He smiled when he saw Will; his greeting falling away as he spotted Ty next. Confusion quickly gave way to anger as Connor recognized him. “You—”
No.
“Enough of this shit,” Ty said, pointing the gun at Connor’s head.
Time slowed down for Will.
No. not him. no. no. no—
His body was moving before his mind could catch up with it and he grabbed Ty’s arm, shoving it down as he threw himself between Connor and the gun.
Hoping, praying he was fast enough.

The crack of a gunshot echoed down the hallway.

Francis Kinloch in Müller's letters to his family: Part 3
These extracts are from Johannes von Müller: Sämmtliche Werke, volume 7 (1810).
My translations here, original German transcriptions below the cut. Müller and Kinloch have set off on their tour of Switzerland!
21 Aug 1775, to his brother
From there a narrow, steep path leads between sheer drops and vertical mountains into the Weissenburg hot spring, travelled only by pedestrians. Imagine the most terrible rock faces, with water rushing down and partially breaking up into dust and mist; between these rocks, a forest river flows noisily over rocky ground, over trees that water and wind had torn away from the slopes, and the rubble from the mountains that had broken them loose and thrown them down. A strong servant from the baths carried Mr. Kinloch and me on his back through this river to the healing spring.
21 Sept 1775, to his father
We drove in a Bernese carriage through Freyburg to Affry Castle, where the awful roads necessitated us to send the carriage home. After 2 hours, we came to Cicogne, where with some effort, we managed to interpret out of the patois of the people that we had taken the wrong road. An old farmer’s wife led us back on track through the muck by moonlight. Beyond the Saanen the path became entirely too difficult. There we rented a miller’s cart. Imagine: our suitcases, me and our dog on this cart, Mr. Kinloch beside us, the servant with a pack on our horse.
[...]
On sunday, Mr Boissier arranged a ball for the whole town in our honour, where everyone had to dance - the farmers and their wives and all sons and daughters, and Mrs Boissiere, and Mr von Castela and Mr Kinloch and even Mr Boissier himself - though he is lame - and even I - though I cannot dance very well. This day I translated an Italian opera into French. I forgot to mention the letters that we received at Berne, Mr K one from America, I one from England from Mr Thomas Boone
Undated, 1775, to his brother
My dear brother! I cannot describe my contentment to you enough. [...] I am loved, and friendship is the joy of my life. My Englishmen, my American,* Bonstetten, Tronchin, Bonnet!
*Kinloch
20 March 1776
At the moment, Kinloch and I are reading Tacitus for the second time (me, for the third) [...] Mr Bonnet is giving us 2–3 lectures a week on psychology. But don’t imagine him as an ordinary professor, he does not allow himself to be paid except in the attention and friendship of his audience, and these are only two, Kinloch and me. We go to him at 4pm, his psychology lesson starts at 5 or 6, and we stay until 11.
June 1776, to his brother
Letters from England have convinced Mr Kinloch to move his planned journey forward to the autumn.
21 Aug 1775, to his brother
21 Sept 1775, to his father
Undated, 1775, to his brother
Mein lieber Bruder!
June 1776, to his brother
Briefe aus England haben Hrn. Kinloch bestimmt, seine vorgehabte Reise auf den Herbst zu verschieben.

MI6's Biggest Swimwear-Embarrassment Headcanons
Whilst on holiday in Turks and Caicos in her early 20s, Eve Moneypenny snorkeled over a section of shallow coral reef and got her bikini bottoms caught…and tugged clean off! She panicked, instinctively dove after the sinking scrap of pink fabric, and inhaled a couple lungs' worth of seawater through her snorkel. Her girlfriends came to her aid and kept her afloat, and after she’d stopped choking and realized her bottoms weren’t coming back, they fetched her a towel so she could exit the ocean with her dignity (mostly) intact.
Gareth Mallory’s mum kept an embarrassing photo of him (aged 3, standing starkers in a kiddie pool with arm floaties and a big grin) that she showed to everyone for the first 30 years of his life. Every girlfriend or mate he ever brought round his mum’s, every neighbor and vicar…Mallory bore the doting humiliations with begrudged grace. But the day Mallory decided to enter politics, he removed the photo from her scrapbook and burned it.
For his first male honey-pot mission, James Bond overcompensated by buying the tiniest thong he could find (string-ties over his hips!)…and the mark he was trying to seduce mocked him for it. So Bond removed the thong and went au naturel. The man promptly stopped laughing, and the seduction worked out just fine…but Bond still remembers that laughter and will never wear a thong again.
For his honeymoon, Bill Tanner took his bride to Jamaica, their luggage packed with travel-themed gifts from their friends and family. Tanner thought of his brother-in-law as a staid, sober fellow, until he unpacked the new set of swim trunks the man had gifted him and discovered they were actually a gag gift (SpongeBob Square Pants themed!). Tanner refused to put them on, and wouldn’t even let his wife hold them up against his hips, and he paid out the nose for a replacement pair of trunks at the resort’s gift shop.
When Felix Leiter was in college, his fraternity teamed up with a sorority to hold a car wash to raise money for their Homecoming Weekend party. They all stripped down to bathing suits for the event, but Felix was the only member of his fraternity brave enough to accept the sorority’s dare and wear a women’s bikini top. His brothers teased him for three years over it, but freshman Felix’s bravery scored him a date to the Homecoming Dance with the sorority president Monique—the most beautiful woman on campus, and a senior to boot!—so he had no regrets about the decision.

Me writing my starker Mafia au: this fic is not gonna have incest
Me after I somehow managed to add in two generations of father/son incest, brother/brother incest, and uncle/nephew incest: ...this fic is not gonna have Starkercest
Lol seriously tho, how does this happen??
I actually really miss writing Starkercest tho, and I need to write more soon.
I'm really into like teen/high school AU's rn, so maybe I should try writing some brother/brother Starkercest? I actually haven't done that yet, but big brother Tony being protective of his baby brother would be really cute!
Alternatively, big brother Tony becoming cold and distant with his baby brother because he realizes he likes him too much and Peter being hurt about it and just wanting to follow him around like a puppy.
And when Peter crawls into Tony's bed one night, something he always used to do when they were little, Tony can't help but touch him, can't help but run his hands over soft skin and kiss him as Peter makes sleepy little sounds 👀👀

When Tony goes to MIT, it’s the first time in his memory he hasn’t had his sweet little brother’s constant affection. Tony gets really touch-starved. During the holidays, Tony is clinging to Peter at every opportunity. Always cuddling, walking with an arm around Peter, linking arms, pressing his leg to peter’s during family dinners, napping with his head in Peter’s lap when Peter’s doing homework. Tony even tried to sleep on Peter’s floor to be close to him before Peter dragged him to the bed. Peter thinks it’ll wear off after Tony gets used to MIT. He soon realizes that he’s wrong. Peter accepts the offer to skip, Midtown have been sending for years. By, the next semester Peter is enrolled at MIT, but Tony’s as clingy as ever.
There’s the whole dramatic thing where they confess the loved each other all along, but they’re taking it slow for now. But no one notices any difference between couple them, and how they are usually because they’re so affectionate.
Peter starts noticing that Tony has developed some quite child-like tendencies and coping mechanisms sometimes, he also notices how much he enjoys taking care of Tony. Peter researches this for weeks, and puts together a folder filled with documents, website links, and a PowerPoint filled with pictures/links of stuff he wants to get little Tony.
Peter doesn’t get around to broaching the subject to Tony. Tony finds the folder labelled Private, (because Peter didn’t think that through), and assumes it’s porn or a diary. Tony read everything. He blushes while looking through the PowerPoint of stuff Peter wants to get Tony, slowly realizing how much he wants this. He want Peter to be his Caregiver, he wants to be taken care of, he wants to be his brother’s baby as well as his boyfriend.
When Peter gets home, Tony and him have a long talk about headspaces, regression and boundaries. Afterwards, they curl up in bed together looking through different online stores to buy stuff for when Tony is Little.

Just Brothers
| Brother/Brother Incest |
Peter and Ned are sitting on the floor. Peter’s bedroom has a plush carpet that is surprisingly comfortable.
They’re studying math. It’s not that interesting until Tony - Peter’s notoriously obnoxious older brother - comes barreling into the room.
“Hey, kiddo,” Tony says, swinging the door open.
Peter rolls his eyes, “Leave me alone, you pest.”
Tony smiles, “Love you too. But, seriously, can I borrow your laptop?”
“No,” Peter says, a hard stare on Tony’s towering form.
“Please,” Tony says, “dad took mine and I need it to write an essay, but he isn’t listening.”
Peter sighs. He knows how much of an asshole their father is, especially to Tony.
“Do you promise you need it?” Peter asks.
Tony nods, “Why would I lie to my little, baby brother?”
Peter glares but points to the desk where his laptop sits. Tony smiles and claps, walking over and snatching the laptop.
“Be careful, dumbass,” Peter says, no venom to his words.
Tony makes a face, and says, “Hey… Ted?”
“Ned,” Peter corrects before his friend can.
Ned smiles.
Tony smiles back, waving, and stands there.
“Are you leaving?” Peter asks.
Tony says, “Just curious. What’re you nerds studying?”
“None of your business,” Peter says, “now leave.”
Tony rolls his eyes with a smile and concedes. He doesn’t shut the door behind him.
Peter groans and slams the door. Maybe it’s petty, but his brother is the most annoying specimen on the Earth sometimes.
Ned smiles, “I think your brother’s kinda hot.”
“Yeah, me too,” Peter says absentmindedly.
There’s a pause.
“You what?”
Peter jumps, suddenly realizing what he just said, “No! No, I didn’t hear what you said.”
“Then you could’ve just said ‘I didn’t hear you’,” Ned laughs, “dude, you’re so weird.”
Peter blushes, unable to say anything.
Ned smiles, “It’s okay, Peter, I love you even though you want to fuck your brother.”
“Shut up,” Peter says through gritted teeth and he hides his face.
There’s another silent beat.
“The way you’re reacting is making me start to worry that you actually want to do it with Tony,” Ned says.
Peter doesn’t say anything, but he looks at Ned with sheepish eyes.
“Dude,” Ned says, having coming to a horrifying realization, “that is so gross.”
“Yeah, okay, like I don’t know that, but - in my defense - we’re only step-brothers, so it doesn’t really count,” Peter says.
Ned laughs in disbelief, “This is literally the plot of a porno.”
“Just keep it to yourself, okay? It’s not like I’d actually get a chance,” Peter says.
“Okay,” Ned says, “but it’s still pretty weird.”
Peter sighs, “Do you want some water? I could really use some water right now.”
Ned nods. He shakes his head and exasperation and continues looking over his notes.
Peter gets up and walks to the door. When he opens it, he bumps into Tony - who looks very guilty - standing right outside the door.
“Tony?” Peter hisses, jumping back.
Tony smiles, an unreadable emotion in his eyes, “I forgot the charger..?”
Peter fakes a smile and nods. Then he slams the door straight in his brother’s face. He turns to look at Ned, shock and horror in his wide, brown eyes.
Ned opens his mouth to say something, but nothing comes out.
Peter exhales, opening the door, “Okay, I’ll get you the charger.”
Tony’s lips are in a tight line, his eyes brimming with something that Peter just can’t place down. Peter walks over, throwing open his desk drawer and ripping out the charger.
Tony takes the charger. He stands there in the open doorway like a lost puppy. His eyes meet Peter’s.
They stand there for a moment, looking into deep into each other’s souls. Both of their gazes are overflowing with longing and desire. It sends both of their hearts sparking alight with a new airy emotion. It feels like a summer breeze on a warm day.
Ned hops up, “Well, I’m going to go. It’s been fun, Peter.”
He awkwardly scoots by the two brothers, leaving them to whatever the fuck they’re doing.
Peter calls out, but doesn’t look away from Tony, “Bye, Ned!”
Tony licks his lips, Peter’s eyes locking on the motion.
“Can I come in?” Tony asks.
Peter looks down, “If you want to.”
“Oh,” Tony says, a greedy smile forming on his lips, “trust me, I want to.”
He walks into the bedroom, closing the door behind him.

I’ll Be Home - Starker
@starkersecretsanta @lilsoshie For you <3
The story starts when Soldier Tony comes home for a few days, and is introduced to the love of his life.
TW: Mentions of war, overload of fluff, A/O dynamics, mutual pining
Happily Holidays, my dancing sugar plums!
Tony remembers his first station.
Just off the coast of Kuwait, he was a fresh recruit, eighteen years old and awkward with a gun in his hand.
Though the army is Alpha-only, Tony had never really thought he’d want to join until he finished school. He remembers that first year, remembers the fear, remembers the confidence building, remembers the shared-smiles of people in his platoon.
Stephen had been his bunkmate during training camp, and the two have been inseparable since. Stephen’s an irritating, self-righteous ass, a damn fine medical doctor, and Tony would lay down his life for him.
One night in February, fresh off the plane, their general hires out a bar and fills it with dancers and family and lays on a huge spread. Tony’s just about to treat himself to the most expensive drink on the menu, when Stephen taps his arm.
“Anthony, I want you to meet my brother. General Rogers had him flown out as a surprise for me.”
Tony lifts his eyebrows, already a little bemused at the softness around Stephen’s eyes. He’s never seen that before. A gentle smile on the doctor’s face, relaxed in a way that’s impossible to be unless you’re home.
Out from behind the other Alpha, a little omega steps.
He can feel his lips part, feel his mouth drop open a little in awe. The omega is beautiful. Tony’s never seen anyone so beautiful in his whole life. He has dark hair like Stephen, but it’s all fluffy and curly. He’s tiny, with huge honey eyes and lips like pink oceans.
Tony doesn’t know what love at first sight is. He’s never read about it in books, never known anyone who experienced it, never heard stories. All he knows is that the second he lays eyes on the boy, he can see it all. In a flash he sees a future of shared smiles and kisses, he sees a family of curly haired children and a dog running in with the paper in his mouth. He sees the boy in white walking down an aisle, a veil framing him in all his glory, he sees-
“Peter, this is Tony, he’s the most narcissistic, egotistical, brilliant soldier I know. I’m very proud to call him my friend. Tony, this is Peter, the best little brother in the world and Brooklyn’s finest obstetrician in training.”
Okay, Stephen’s gotta be pretty drunk to be this nice, but Tony doesn’t even have the focus to mock him for the sentimentality. Peter. Perfect, beautiful Peter Strange. He’s got the loveliest blush on his cheeks, ducking his head like he’s shy and Tony’s heart-
Peter holds out his hand. “Nice to meet you,” he beams, a sunbeam, a fucking ray of sunshine- “and I’m not very good, Stephen’s the real doctor.”
Stephen scoffs in outrage and Tony grins, tipping his head.
“I’m sure that’s not true. There’s quite clearly something special in your family’s genes.” Tony murmurs, feeling stupid even as the words leave his mouth. He can just picture this omega with babies now, babbling in his arms, babies with big eyes and soft skin and-
A woman from across the bar calls Stephen’s name and he wanders off leaving the two with each other. Peter blushes again.
“Let me buy you a drink.” Tony offers and Peter smiles.
“No, no, please let me buy you one. It’s the least I can do- thank you for-for your service, it’s- so- so brave-“
Tony laughs, feeling a little giddy. “I’ll have a beer. And I’ll get you a…” he glances at the drinks on the board. “A blueberry horizon.”
The omega hops onto a barstool and Tony slides in beside him. Peter nods delightedly. “Okay. Are they nice?”
“I think you’ll like it, I have an eye.” The alpha hums, “it’s very sweet. Like you.”
Another glorious blush.
Tony remembers that night. Eighteen years old and his first time back. He remembers talking to Peter all night, remembers them leaning into each other, feeling the heat of the omega’s body, he remembers Peter’s giggle, remembers steadying him when the two had gone outside for some fresh air.
He remembers the starlight in Peter’s eyes, and the flush across the bridge of his nose.
“I want you.” He’d whispered, drunk off alcohol and lust.
Peter had blinked up at him sweetly. “Want me to do what?” He’d whispered back, and Tony’s chest had clenched something fierce.
“To…to take a walk with me.” He’d offered instead, holding out his arm like a gentleman. “To look at the moon with me.”
Peter had been speechless for a moment, looking up at him in wonder. “It’s like an old movie.” He’d beamed and Tony laughed.
They’d strolled away into the darkness and by the time dawn came up, Tony was in love.
***
It’s been a few years since then. Tony’s twenty-five now, and his six-year contract has finally come to an end.
“You’re not gonna stay on?” Stephen asks in surprise, renewing his contract as a field medic for another five.
“Enough for me,” Tony murmurs, looking up at the moon the way he always does when he feels like he could finally get everything he wants.
The problem with only being back in America a few weeks at a time is that over the past few years, he and Peter have only seen each other on a handful of occasions. They’re friends. Peter writes and sends care-packages to both his brother and Tony.
On average, Tony’s seen him maybe two days a year for the past seven years.
Each time Peter is more beautiful. Last time was at a New Years Party, with Peter breathlessly regaling him with a story of a premature birth, hands moving expressively, as the two of them leaned against the railing on the roof and watched fireworks going in the distance.
“I’ve missed you, Pete,” Tony had admitted, wincing at his own lack of tact. “I never get to see you.”
“Aw, Tony,” Peter had knocked their hips together, resting his head on Tony’s shoulder. “I miss you too. But it means we always have lots to talk about when you’re back.”
They talk and talk and they have a good time, but there are topics that are never touched on.
Tony’s never asked if Peter’s seeing anyone. Never broached it with Stephen either. It hadn’t seemed fair to express any sort of interest, to stake any sort of claim, not while he was away so often. The thought- the miraculous thought- of Peter liking Tony back, and then having to wait for him. To wait alone for a few days of snatched contact, to be lonely and unsupported and-
The thought was too agonising.
So, Tony has waited and waited and-
“I want to go home. Settle down. Be around.”
Stephen smiles, pouring the both of them some bourbon. “Any idea where you’ll go?”
Tony takes the glass as it’s offered. “Brooklyn, maybe.”
Stephen chuckles in surprise. “Well good, keep an eye on Peter for me. He adores you, you know.”
Tony’s fingers tremble and he hopes it’s true.
Stephen gives him a look then, curious and frighteningly intelligent, but he doesn’t say anything. They play cards and drink bourbon and Stephen accuses him of cheating.
At the end of the night in their bunks, Stephen talks into the darkness.
“I’ll miss you, Stark. You’re…you’re like another brother to me.”
Tony says, “I’ll miss you too,” and thinks about what it might be like having Stephen as a brother-in-law.
He thinks it might be pretty great.
***
As a young Alpha in Brooklyn fresh out of the army, he’s treated with a lot of respect. People nod at him, offer to buy him drinks and clap him on the back like he’s an old friend.
He finds a place to rent and gets a great deal even though he doesn’t need it. He’s got a lot saved up. His fingers itch to call Peter, but first he goes to a few job interviews. Tries to get a feel for living in the city and having his own space after so long of sharing and barracks.
He gets the first job he applies for. It’s as a security consultant for a big firm. It’s good pay and the female Alpha who shakes his hand is no-nonsense and impressed with him.
He buys himself a bed.
He spends a lot on it. It’s ludicrously big and the mattress is extra plush, queen, memory foam. He gets a fancy headboard and high-thread blankets. When he tries to sleep on it that night, it’s a little awkward. He sinks into the softness, feels unnatural.
He tells himself he wants a change, but he’s lying. The bed isn’t for him.
It’s for the softest, most beautiful, most deserving person Tony knows.
***
“Tony!” Peter cries, leaping into his arms in the March sunshine and clutching him tight. Tony lifts him clear off the ground: breathing him in.
Tony’s in uniform. He feels more comfortable in it, but also, he thinks that maybe- maybe Peter likes seeing him in it. A few people on the street around them aww and applaud, but Tony has eyes for none of them.
Peter’s in a bumble bee sweater and white jeans, looking so pleased to see him that Tony wants to- wants to make his move.
But no. It’s not the right time. He’s just got back, he’s just moved to Brooklyn, he’s just started his job- it’s too soon.
“Wow,” Peter murmurs, tracing his finger down the jagged line near Tony’s eye. His touch is like heaven and Tony leans into his caress. “A close call?”
“Real close.”
“I’m glad you’re safe.” Peter whispers, eyes huge, “and it’s very, very handsome.”
The scar had bled and bled and hurt like a bitch when it happened-
And Tony would do it again in a heartbeat, just for the way Peter wets his lips as he looks up at him.
***
Over the next few months, things move slowly.
Tony has a few bad dreams, writes letters to Stephen, and does his job. He buys more furniture, puts down more roots in the form of a real oak coffee table and a tv with cable.
He visits Peter at the hospital he works at. He sees Peter as everything he knew he could be. Capable, brilliant, eyes flickering over information and reassuring to the pregnant Omegas. Peter’s hands are confident, assured, as they touch round bellies or squirming, wriggly babies.
After his shift, they go and get lunch.
“It’s like watching Stephen,” Tony says in awe, “you’re brilliant.”
Peter blushes and smiles, a classic Tony adores, and takes a bite of his salmon. Tony watches it go past his lips. “Well I think you’re brilliant.”
“And devastatingly handsome.”
“It’s devastating alright,” Peter teases. “So, what’s new? Have you made any friends in your building yet?”
Tony makes a face. “Why on earth would I want friends in my building?”
“Fine, Mr Grumps, what about…um…have you been…dating, or- or anything? Seeing someone?”
Tony stills, eyes flickering over Peter’s face trying to read him. What does that mean? But the omega looks carefully schooled, focused on his lunch. Is Peter asking as a friend? Or asking because- because- “I’m not seeing anyone,” Tony murmurs, waiting for Peter’s reaction. “Are you?”
“You’re- me? No, no…”
“No?” Tony hums, “no Alpha swept you off your feet?”
Peter’s honey eyes meet his. There’s silence for a beat, before Peter looks away. “Well, I mean- it’s just hard to find the time.”
“Is there someone you’re interested in?” Tony asks, voice a little too rough.
Those big, beautiful eyes keep looking at him, and then Peter’s pager beeps and they both seem relieved.
Tony finishes his lunch alone and tries to think. Maybe it’s time, maybe it’s time he made a move. He’s wanted Peter since that night in the bar. He’s back now, he’s-
But no. No, it’s not the right time and Peter’s right. The omega works so hard and doctors’ shifts are long and tiring and-
No. Not yet.
***
Peter’s apartment is all bronze accents and fluffy pillows. It’s near the hospital and has a pretty good view that makes up for all the sirens that go by.
“I swear you’ve spoilt me.” Tony moans after he’s finished dessert. Peter’s cooking is phenomenal. After three helpings of spaghetti and chocolate brownie for dessert, he’s so content he could purr.
Peter laughs, licking chocolate from his fingertips in a way that’s obscene. “I love watching you eat. I wish I could just feed you all the time, make sure you’re getting enough.”
It’s a very omega thing to say to an Alpha. Very traditional. Very domestic. Very intimate. What does it mean?
“It’s late,” Peter says, standing up and stretching. Tony can’t drag his eyes away from him. From the gorgeous figure he makes even in his frumpy green sweater with the floral collar and chocolate on his mouth.
He pulls himself to his feet and reaches for his coat. “You’ve got an early shift-“
“No, I mean-“ Peter takes a step closer, swallowing hard, looking brave. “I mean, it’s late, you could…if you wanted, you could just stay over…”
Tony frowns, “what do you mean? The commute will be a bitch in the morning.”
Tony doesn’t understand when Peter looks embarrassed. “Nothing, no, don’t worry, I was just being silly, sorry.”
Tony doesn’t like that. Doesn’t like Peter looking awkward and humiliated. He feels like he’s missed something. “Pete?” He prompts gently, “are you alright? Was it a…was it a bad shift today?” That happens sometimes. Tragic things happen and Peter gets small and sad and needs someone to lean against for a few days, Tony gets that. “I’ll stay, sweetheart-“
“No, no, you don’t-“
“Hey, hey,” he collects the boy into his arms. “I’m here for you, okay? I’m here for you.” He kisses Peter’s temple: holds him tight. It takes a second, but eventually Peter relaxes into his embrace and they stand there, wrapped around each other.
Eventually they pull apart a little, and Peter peeks up at him.
Maybe now, Tony thinks to himself. Maybe this is the moment, maybe this is the right time-
But no. Peter’s had a long day and-
Warm and soft and perfect is the kiss placed onto the corner of Tony’s mouth.
He’s so stunned that he can only stand there, unmoving, staring down at the omega in shock.
Peter’s the colour of a rose petal, looking like the bravest thing in the world.
Tony can’t even move. Does this- is this-
Peter stretches onto his tiptoes, hands still clutching Tony’s shoulders, and slower, much slower, presses another little butterfly kiss right onto the corner of Tony’s mouth.
He can hear his heart beating in his ears- is this- does he-
He’s hyperaware of his hand on Peter’s waist, one on the small of his back, of how they’re pressed together, of how perfect-
“Tony, I really like you.” Peter whispers, breath fanning over Tony’s face. “I was um…I was wondering if-“
“Yes,” Tony croaks, “yes, yes, yes, yesyesyesyes.”
Peter makes the most adorable sound of delight, and kisses Tony right on the mouth.
He tastes of chocolate and love and Tony sees it all again. He sees the golden mornings and the crosswords in bed. He sees the dog coming into the kitchen with the paper in his mouth, he sees a future, his future, with the love of his life-
“Hey Tony,” Peter giggles, lashes all wet with tears, “I adore you.”
Tony lets out a sob and buries his face into Peter’s curls.
Coffee tables and cable can go screw themselves. He doesn’t need roots to be tethered somewhere- with Peter, he’s always home.
***
On Christmas Eve, Christine and Peter are making mince pies and competitively quoting It’s a Wonderful Life, and Tony’s in the living room, phone to his ear.
“How’s Christie?”
“You just spoke to her-“
“How is she really, Anthony?”
Tony sighs. “She misses you, but we’ve got her, Stephen, don’t worry. She understands. It’s just hard.”
Stephen’s silent for a while. Tony wonders if he’s thinking about his contract. Stephen clears his throat: “It’s a squeeze the three of you in that tiny flat, when are you and Peter going to get a house?”
“We’re gonna start searching after Christmas,” Tony chuckles, “Guess what I’ve got Pete for Christmas.”
“Something ingenious no doubt. A framed photo of yourself?”
“Ha ha. No, get this,” Tony drops his voice, “it’s a puppy.”
“Really?”
“Uh huh,” Tony grins, “Rhodes is bringing it over tomorrow morning, crack of dawn.”
“Tony, he’s going to love it.”
“I know, right? Best-present-ever-sex is definitely on the table.”
“That’s my brother, Tony.”
“Not literally on the table, Christie’s here-“
“I’ve got you something.”
Tony laughs in surprise. “Really? How’d you pull that off? You didn’t have to do that, Stephen-“
“Shut up and let me tell you what it is.”
“Is it good?”
“Obviously. You’re going to feel bad about making sex jokes.”
“I’m excited.”
“Christie should’ve put it under the tree- in an envelope.”
Tony hums in surprise, looking under the tree where all the presents are. Sure enough, there’s a red envelope with his name on it. He examines it curiously. “What is it?”
“Open it, you moron.”
Tony rolls his eyes, balancing the phone in the crook of his neck, and opens it up. Inside is what looks like an old letter. He glances at it in confusion. “What am I looking at here, Doc?”
“It’s a letter Peter wrote me a very long time ago.”
Yes, he can recognise Peter’s handwriting now, doctor-scruffy with lots of loops. It’s very sweet. Tony gets the gist of the first few paragraphs. Peter asks if Stephen’s safe, tells him he misses him, how his studies are going and then- and then-
You might not remember but you introduced me to one of your friends when you were here last month. His name’s Tony. Is he single? He’s got the prettiest dark brown eyes and he was really nice to me and I was just wondering if he’d told you about me? We went for a walk and we talked all night. Do you think he might like me? Could you tell him I say hi? Don’t make me sound like a dork! He’s not like any Alpha I’ve ever met before. And mom said to call her! And-
“Holy shit.”
“Indeed.”
“A month after we met- a month after-“
“Yes, Tony,” Stephen sighs, but his voice is fond. “I’ve had the pleasure of seeing you two pine for seven years. I thought you might like it. I don’t say it often, but I do love you, Tony. I’m very glad you’re with my brother. However, you do worry. You’re a soldier and you have a keen sense of time and when to do things, but you hesitated with Peter. I’m not sure why, maybe you thought he didn’t like you, but regardless, I think, in love, just doing what feels right is okay, from time to time. Especially with you and Peter.”
“Stephen…”
“Merry Christmas, Tony.”
“I’m so glad I met you. You’ve changed my life.”
Stephen sniffles, like he might be crying. Tony calls Christie in, to let the two of them say goodbye, and heads into the kitchen.
Peter beams at him, flour on his cheeks. “George Bailey, I’ll love you till the day I die!” He quotes merrily, skipping over to peck Tony’s cheek, and Tony thinks about Stephen, and about love and about the puppy he’s going to give Peter tomorrow and the dog it’ll grow into and the kitchen they’ll have. He thinks about timings and all the waiting and the missed moments and then- he doesn’t think, he just does.
The first thing he says is: “I love you so much, Peter.”
And the next thing he does is get down onto one knee.

merry christmas @lilsoshie your prompts were all equally amazing so it was really hard to choose, so I tried to merge a few of them together. I hope you liked this and that you have an amazing Christmas! All the love in the world1

soft Starker thoughts
cw: incest down the road, when both of them are adults
--
Peter's big brother, Tony, is a pilot. Peter's fondest memories are of Tony taking him flying - when Tony was just 21, Peter 14 - laughing and screaming high above the rest of the world. It isn't all good. Howard is too harsh with Tony, bitter that his eldest fail to meet his lofty expectations, annoyed by his cavalier personality.
Peter becomes the apple of Howard's eye - the clever but obedient son, too young to know what he really wants. Howard sneers at his firstborn, taunts, "about time, Peter accomplished the same thing about a week ago." But despite how easy it would've been for Tony to hate Peter for receiving their father's affection, Tony doesn't.
He loves Peter. he makes sure Peter knows it. He shows Peter tricks to memorizing the periodic table, enlists his help daring Jim to an air show contest (Rhodey wins, easily), and Tony cooks dinner for them on the nights when Howard was supposed to be back for a family meal, makes funny faces over their grilled cheese sandwiches until Peter finally smiles.
Soon though, Tony and their father have one fight too many, and- Tony flies away.
He sends Peter postcards sometimes, scenes of sunny Malibu, vivid Jiufen, electric-blue Reykjavik. Peter clutches each of these to his chest, keeps them in an old tin box he tucks under his pillow and falls asleep, dreaming of flying high above the clouds, Tony's warm arms safe around him.

Starker - high school/omegaverse AU
Tony and his alphas friends have a cruel game that they keep playing every day.
Getting all the omegas of their school wet.
They would remove their pheromone blocking patches when the adults are away, and they would drown their fertile prey who would pass by them in the hallways with their strong scent, following them, whistling at them, flirting with them, and so on until they could catch a glimpse of their soaked pants from behind.
Tony is suddenly much less amused by this game when his younger brother enters high school.
The most adorable omega of them all.

My second entry for the @starker-bingo 2022: Dragon AU. Thanks a thousand times to @king-of-kaoss for betaing and support, you're amazing sweety! 🥰💜
A dragon's tale
Stomping of hooves echoed through the grove.
The horse panted with the high speed it was forced to maintain, jumping between small birch trees. The young man who held fast on the saddle prayed to the Almighty that his ride would not trip on the uneven ground. His locks hit against the sides of his head when he turned around to take a quick look over his shoulder. Prince Peter rode as fast as he could.
It had not been supposed to become this way!
The young prince had been traveling back to the kingdom of his father, riding in a convoy of ten soldiers who were supposed to shield him on the way.
But they had not.
Betrayed he was, alone and without friends, fleeing for his dear life. He bowed low over the horse’s neck and continued his prayers, giving his life into the hands of the Almighty.
***
Peter’s existence had been a slow and peaceful one for the last four years, living in a secluded cloister in the care of his uncle Benjamin, a man of the church, in order to exist only for his faith. As a third son this was meant to be his way since his oldest brother was to be king after his father and his second the advisor of battle and war. Peter had been content with it, thankful for the time he was allowed to spend with his family before they sent him away to learn the ways and rites of the faith in a small and quaint place.
The cloister was located at the border of the kingdom at the foot of the mountains that separated the land from its neighbors. But this - to live the life of a monk and become a man of faith the future king could confide with - was apparently not what destiny had in store for him!
One day the message had arrived that his parents and his older brothers alike had been fallen to murder by poison! All of them had vanished from god’s earth with one strike of a ruthless traitor that had not been found yet. And he, Peter, at the age of barely seventeen was to be the heir and new king.
Silence had fallen over the small cloister with the shock. Father Benjamin decided to send Peter on his way as fast as possible, to prevent a usurper to get a grip on the throne in the heir’s absence. All fear that might have been rising had to be pushed down and Peter had made preparations for the journey into a new life. His last visit at court had been three years ago, but he had spent his whole childhood there and was confident to settle back in soon. The responsibility to be a proper ruler however, was something he tried to not think about.
A delegation arrived shortly after the messenger to guard him on the way back.
In the aftermath it had been naïve to just follow along while his family had fallen to murder. But his uncle and himself, used to a peaceful and honest lifestyle in the eye of the Almighty, had trusted the royal banner and the leader with the kind and polite attitude.
A bad decision that could have ended even worse for the young prince.
Somehow he caught on the strange atmosphere that rose between the men on the second day of the journey and thus stayed alert. So it was only a shock but not a surprise when half of the warriors suddenly stepped up against the others.
It had been early in the morning, even before sunrise and Peter had been up and out of the tent to pee – this was a usual time to get up at the cloister. His full bladder had been a heaven sent because on his way back to the tent he saw the traitors murder the good men in their sleep, to enter the royal sleeping place with ropes and cuffs, looking for him.
Without thinking at all he got on a horse and rode as fast as possible, unknowing the direction, without food and water and no friends at all, right into the forest, ready to give his life and safety into god’s hands.
***
Peter rode fast as long as the horse was able, only slowing down when he feared to injure the poor creature. It was quiet around him, the woods deep and full of shadows. He looked around, trying desperately to confine his labored breathing, his eyes darting back and forth between the barks, but there was nothing. Slowly he continued, keeping as quiet as possible and listening to the sound of the birds to be warned when a group was coming.
He paused by a small stream that murmured through the grove, letting the horse drink and looked around. He had no idea where he was or which direction he had to go. On top of that he knew only a few people at court and had no idea who the traitor might even be. Only that he, Peter, was the next on his list was obvious.
The boy sat down, exhausted, frightened and hungry, pondering on what to do. He had no chance than to move on, trying to reach a village to somehow make it to the capitol city from there. He pondered how he should do this without money or supplies but he had no other chance than to try. Better to not talk about his heritage he thought when he drank some of the water and then led the exhausted horse alongside the stream through the wood.
Somehow he had made the escape from the clutches of the thugs it seemed, because he didn’t meet a single soul on his way through. The thicket was almost impenetrable and he stayed close to the water to find his way.
In the early evening the trees grew lighter and then he stepped out of the woods and found himself between fields and meadows on the foot of the mountains. The tall and blueish structure of the towering rock caught the setting sun between the peaks, making it seem like molten gold that dripped on the country below.
It seemed that his flight had brought him far away from the right path since the kingdom enfolded to the other side but maybe that was what had saved him. The thugs had chosen the opposite direction for their search and lost him.
In a slow pace Peter rode down a small path between the fields, following along to a tiny village that laid secluded between trees and hills. It appeared tiny and somewhat rundown to the eye. This was apparently not a place where the mountains could be passed, so that no merchants and travelers came through. A perfect place to stay the night and make plans if the young prince found a way to get food and shelter without money and without showing his true identity.
Surprisingly the villagers welcomed him warmly in their midst. Peter presented himself as a merchant’s son who had been ambushed while on the road with his family and goods, and barely made it out alive. In fact, the villagers seemed not really to care about his made up story, which relieved him. The less questions, the better.
They asked to tell some stories from the roads since for a long time no traveler had found his way to them and that they were more than happy to exchange some simple food and a place to rest for some news from afar. Peter gladly complied and told them that the king was dead and the youngest son on his way to the castle to be crowned and rule over them all, more he had not to share since his own life had been so secluded. But that was enough apparently, the settlers satisfied and his belly filled with earthen food.
Peter went to bed in a barn, sleeping on the hay. Exhausted as he was, his eyes closed as soon as his head rested on the rough wool of the blanket he had been given, hope for the future in his heart.
***
Peter woke suddenly, in the middle of the night, to people grabbing him on wrists and ankles.
‘The thieves, the traitors! They found me!’ was his first thought but when he fought the relentless grips and glared at the pursuers he saw the townspeople surrounding him. Their faces were stern and the atmosphere tight but with purpose and Peter knew that their agreement to let him rest in their midst had been a pretense to get him into their grasp. But why?!
“What do you want? I have no money and no goods! Take my horse if you must, but let me go!”
But no one answered to his demands and pleas. They dragged him out of the barn and to the village’s border, onto a meadow that was crowned by a large rock in the middle.
Peter’s eyes went wide and his limbs shaking when he saw the ropes that were prepared, to bind him to hooks that were screwed into the rock’s surface. Dark blotches on the rough surface indicated that this stone had seen helpless bodies before and what had happened to them. His blood ran cold and he fought against the hands that pulled him nearer but it was to no avail. Without further ado they bound him to the rock, his hands above his head, his feet together, ignoring his desperate curses and pleas and questions.
Peter felt cold sweat run down his back at the sight of the villagers. Their faces showed no triumph or madness, but determined focus. They didn’t do this because they liked it, they didn’t want to hurt him, but apparently they were dead serious in what they were trying to accomplish.
Somewhere a bell banged loudly for a couple of minutes but then it became quiet. The villagers had left him here for good. The frantic beating of his heart was all Peter could hear.
Dawn started to roll over the fields, painting the sky in bright pink and orange, while Peter was tightly secured to the rock, helpless and alone. The villagers had left without any explanation. Was he to be eaten by wolves or bears? But why lure them to the village like this? It made no sense! He pulled at the ropes, wriggled as much as it was possible but he was not able to free himself and all that he accomplished was to raw up his wrists. His breath was quick and in panic when he watched the sky turn silvery and then blue with the slowly rising sun.
The village was quiet behind him, but it was not the only thing that held its breath. No bird, no insect – nothing stirred. The people had retracted into their houses and except for Peter’s breathing it was quiet.
And then… he heard it.
A rushing and flapping like leather that was thrashing in the wind. It was quiet at first and he only noticed because his senses were pulled tight to a breaking point. But it soon grew more prominent! The sound neared from the mountains and when he looked up he felt his blood run cold as if someone was pouring ice on him.
From the mountains a creature neared the village. A long and slender body, covered in gleaming red scales with strong legs that ended in claws, leathery wings flapping with loud thudding sounds, the head of the beast crowned by majestic horns and glowing golden eyes.
A dragon!
Peter started to pull on the ropes, now aware that this was indeed an altar of sorts to sacrifice people to the beast that was coming nearer with each second. But he could as much free himself as before, doomed to watch his fate closing in on him while his whole body was gripped tight by fear. If he had not been scared out of his mind, he might have found it in him to admire the beauty of the creature. The dark red scales reflecting the sun, speckled with golden dust that made the beast almost look like clad in noble armor. In the middle of its chest rested a blue diamond that shone in the morning sun. But despite power and beauty, to be confronted with such a beast was a nightmare and all Peter could do was hold on tight to his consciousness.
The dragon arrived in front of the bound prince. It landed with a loud thud, his wings flapped one more time to regain balance. The strong wind pressed Peter to the rock but even if not, he would have not moved an inch, he was frozen in place by the pure sight of the majestic beast.
The dragon moved on four legs, his claws gripping into the earth. He slowly neared the rock and his prey. Large nostrils twitched when he took in the scents, while he looked around for a possible threat with his big golden eyes. Deciding the situation to be safe, he came closer, his large and strong body moving with an elegance such a massive beast should not be able to possess. His tail lashed from one side to the other while he sniffed some more.
Peter felt tears well up in his eyes. This was to be his end. Not to be king of his father’s land, or even falling to the hands of the same traitors that had murdered his family, but to please a cruel beast in this godforsaken place. His body trembled in place in the face of death, but he did not move an inch and did not look away for a second. If he was to die here, bound to this damned sacrifice rock, he at least would end his life upright and with the eye to the nemesis ahead.
The dragon tilted its head and blinked. He sniffed again and came closer, now towering above the helpless boy that was tied up like a present. He bowed low and moved his muzzle over the trembling form, inhaling the human’s scent. Then he lifted his head again, looking around for a moment as if he was thinking why this person was presented to him.
Peter felt the body heat of the dragon, saw every gilded dot on the beast’s head while it came even closer, sniffing him all over. The gleaming eyes held not the gaze of a beast however. The young prince saw intelligence there and an old soul.
Maybe… there was hope?
“Please…” he whispered with trembling lips, begging for his life but also for his lineage’s future and his kingdom’s destiny.
The dragon straightened up. The eyes of the boy followed his movement and become so very wide when the beast raised his clawed paw.
The sharp talon cut through the air, aiming for the bound form. Peter closed his eyes, preparing for his death…
… that did not come.
The claw cut through the ropes on his ankles and then on his wrists, freeing him from the stone. Peter sagged forward but was caught by the paw that closed around his torso with no difficulties.
The dragon pulled back before he launched himself into the air, dragging Peter with him like he was nothing more than a puppet. The young prince however, felt his body hauled upward in a tight grip, his legs dangling helplessly beneath him. Flapping sound around him grew stronger with the powerful movements of the dragon’s wings, pulling him and his prey away from the village, leaving into the light blue morning sky.
Frozen with shock Peter stared at the creature that had decided to not murder him on the spot but to take him away to an unknown future.
To be continued...
