The thing about disco elysium is that, you have the most pathetic miserable disgraceful human at your hand to play as and you play and try to piece him back together and you start to love him so dearly and you start to care so so much about him that it hurts every time he is humiliated or heartbroken. Because no matter how bad he has fucked up, despite all his mistakes and flaws, you want him to LIVE, you want him to live even if he is ready to die any second, and you want him to be loved. You want him to experience big tenderness. And then it gets you thinking, this man is far worse than you could ever be and you still want him to keep on living, it's only fair that you'd want that for yourself too you know? alright but you and I are on the same wavelength because the way I already have this planned out with him driving her home so often that now he has the car ready for her before she even gets inside – seat warmer on, heater blasting; probably some banter about his music preferences, to which she says she'll think anything is good because she listens to that fucking jazz instrumental on repeat for her coffee shop shifts that makes her ears bleed so whatever is on in the car is a nice reprieve

but anyways, the first time he drops her off, he doesn't like how unsafe the building/area is (notices little things as he's driving through and walking her to the door), expresses his concern in his usual militaristic, matter-of-fact way but makes sure not to say anything out of line since they're really just starting to be friends

and she says that it's all she can afford with her wages and just makes do with the best of her situation (which is absolutely terrible, e.g. neighbors, plumbing, appliance issues, etc. as it is can be quite possible for Londoners to have poor housing conditions from my research)

so he does at least teach her some defense moves which leads to some sexual tension and very confused feelings between both of them, but not any actual smut yet and she may or may not have to use them at any point, but idk I haven't thought that far ahead and honestly it's more of like a feel-good plot than anything with tension or drama so I wouldn't make any of them suffer

but I digress – she gets evicted and has to find a new place to live within only a few day's notice and at this point they are actually sort-of-friends so he offers her his spare room in his apartment which so happens to be in a nicer section of the city (except it's not actually a spare room, it's a fully fledged office that he basically tears down and leaves it in move-in ready condition when she gets there so she doesn't know), turning this also into a semi-roomate au too

and of course the only way she can take it is if he begrudgingly agrees to let her pay some rent but he leaves the price ridiculously low maybe £500-600 at most per month, and she would honestly be an idiot to turn down the offer, so she accepts and then at some point we find out that he actually saves that money for her in an account to accrue interest and gifts it to her as a graduation present ♡

adding to the nightwing hatching ideas: considering the fact they live on the volcano island and the smoke conceals the moon which is why moon is the only nightwing with powers recently, maybe to trigger their eggs to hatch they hatched them with candlelight or brought them near lava. so instead of a night sky, you get lightly toasted nightwings

The volcano nightwings are just extra toasty which is why they're infinitely grumpier and angry all the time.

The nightwings when they first arrived at the volcano had tried to keep the moonlight tradition. Trying to set their eggs out on the clearer nights where the smoke wasn't completely filling the sky. It didn't last very long, and barely any eggs had hatched with that method.

They had tried risker methods, on hatching dates they would set out from the volcano in order to get their eggs to hatch. That also hadn't lasted very long, with increasing paranoia and the want to keep secrets they eventually stopped trying to have their eggs hatch under a proper night.

Though it was tradition, it had to go. It just wasn't worth the risk.

The nightwing population is canonically very low (I think), so whenever a family has egg it's a whole celebration. And hatching day is a whole ceremony too. Though it is, really risky (but safety be damned we need this to be extra) in the queen room- right in front of it. With those lava lakes, you know the one, you know it. They just hold hatching ceremonies there and usually it's the whole tribe present to celebrate.

Over the years I don't see why nightwings eggs wouldn't evolve to just hatch under light in general instead of moonlight specifically. Since there's literally no moon present on the volcano only the nightwings that were able to hatch without it managed to prosper.

Volcano nightwings deffo got their own special set of powers. Mild fire protection or something, who knows.

Honestly I would love a Jason Todd comic that focused on confronting his world view, like yes it's easy to put a bullet through the head of every criminal but, the world isn't so black and white, sometimes criminals either have no choice/it goes deeper than that. Similar to how utrh questions Bruce's morality (nothing really came of it) I want a comic where Jason's world view is also questioned.

He really has a lot of potential but idk DC keeps fumbling. I'd like to know your thoughts on how you would handle a Jason storyline, I love your metas.

oh how i mourn the disappointing horror of everything under the red hood could have been... for both bruce and jason!

if i were to handle a jason comic, i would disregard everything ever written after under the red hood and related stories. as much as i enjoy jason joining the batfam and rebuilding bridges in fanon works, i much prefer jason becoming a permanent member of the gotham rouge gallery and staying batman's kind-of-enemy in canon.

what i think utrh was setting up was Jason Todd, Ultimate Foe of Bruce Wayne. jason is a incredibly smart and cunning character, who planned to the smallest detail in order to get his desired outcome. nothing he did was by accident. but more importantly, his unwavering and concrete code can only be rivalled by batman, and so, they will constantly be at odds. if utrh taught us anything, it is that jason and bruce are always going to be plagued by what they lost in each other, and as a result, will never find their way back to what they once were.

they will now forever exist as consequences of each other, no matter what.

by doing this to his story, jason finally has the chance to grow as his own character, independent from the batfam;

one of the biggest problems with how dc is handling jason is that they want him to be this angry, violent and unsociable person while also trying to convince everyone that he is not angry and not violent and very sociable with the batfam. this causes the disparity in his writing, either with inconsistencies or just downright character assassination.

if he was kept as gotham's anti-hero, then this gives him the freedom to find his own code that is no longer dependent on batman's overarching one. utrh jason kills indiscriminately because it's what solves the problem that batman's never been able to fix: crime. jason, who is young, and betrayed, and for all that he is intelligent, he is naive and claims he's the long term solution to batman's short term one. unfortunately, killing criminals to stop criminals from existing works until, like you said, comes a situation where the world isn't so black and white.

jason knows this, probably better than anyone. he comes from poverty and homelessness, lost his parents to drugs and sickness and violence. many of his stories as robin highlight how, unlike batman, jason is able to see people for who they are and not just their actions, offering a empathetic insight that batman, for all he is kind, can never truly grasp.

as red hood, i think a combination of the lazarus pit, his training, and his murderer, batman's seemingly disregard for him, how the world moves on while jason is stuck, has made him forget this kindness he had in him. that he still has. so we need a story where it is pulled out of him and he is forced to battle what he's always known.

i think this question of jason's morality was what zdarsky was TRYING to do with Cheer (Batman Urban Legends #1-#6), but it fell flat due to the terrible portrayal of Robin Jason. The story itself of jason killing someone and bruce reacting to it left a lot to be desired (as always). not to mention how out of all the criminals jason could've been shown to kill, having it be a dealer who is also an addict is rather... tone deaf on jason's own moral code. the killing was also not calculated or "for the greater good" and was instead a rage-filled thoughtless killing which, again, is a gross misunderstanding of jason's moral code and intelligence.

so we almost had it, a story where jason has to fight someone more stubborn than batman — himself. as a character in batman's rouge gallery, this horrifying realisation of who he shares that title with, the determination to be better not because of batman, but because jason himself has realised he can do more by doing less of what he's been doing.

i don't know if i would rule out jason killing people entirely, since it is such an integral deconstruction of who he was as robin and who he is now as red hood, but i would like to think he changes how he holds his weapons. less of "i kill because it's the only way to fix this" and more "i kill because sometimes it's the best thing i can do to fix this". a very subtle but still problematic change that isolates him from ever joining the batfam.

it might seem sort of cruel, that my ideal jason story makes him lonely and more of a villian, but i think that is the sort of tragic path his character is forced to adopt. he made this bed when he returned to gotham with retribution in his plans and hurt in his heart, and now he must lie in.

there is always the potential for him to be happy, to have his family and friends and be the sort of hero he was as a teenager — but to get there, it needs to get worse before it can get better. that's what dc failed with jason, skipping the internal turmoil and drama and harsh reality checks and skipping straight to the part where he has a family again.

plus, batman's rouge gallery teach lessons to batman. poison ivy, harley, two face, strange, riddler and (annoyingly) even the joker play crucial roles to who batman is as a hero and constantly force him to challenge his code.

jason teaches the biggest lesson of all — that batman is bruce wayne. he had the potential to be the driving force that changed bruce's character forever, because red hood is a reflection that batman created all on his own, not by being batman, but by being bruce wayne. and this fact would have given jason the chance to be more than just that.

Can a parent know his pup second gender before? Like, waay before they presentation?

Good question! I think they have an inkling. I don’t know how long “way before” is to you, but in ACR Bruce starts catching notes in Jason’s pup scent that make him think Jason will eventually be omega.

Medically speaking, I did some world building with nodule growth in the pelvis that could, upon internal scan, show the beginnings of presentation several months out. So in ASOH Lex scans Jason, who is frozen pre-presentation, and finds end-stage nodule growth indicating omega internal organs.

But could someone look at a young, young pup and know? I’m not certain. Sometimes you can guess, based on how fast/big they grow, some characteristics they might show. But sometimes pups surprise you!

I imagine you could possibly do a blood test on pups to try and determine hormonal changes, but this tech is probably iffy.

And possibly — this is me just world building on 2 glasses of wine — presentation gender can be somewhat influenced by circumstances or environmental stress. Maybe it’s not set in stone once a pup is born? I don’t know for sure. Curious what folks think.

Bruce came from a long like of very strong alphas, and still presented omega despite being large/tall. By any predictor, he should’ve been an alpha — but wasn’t. Makes you think.

Riddle as your boyfriend would be really cute and wholesome, but imagine being his best friend. Like-

Encouraging him to be more open and friendly, constantly getting him to try new things but accepting it when he’s not comfy with it. Making other friends and helping him to understand and value spending time with people more and showing him things like books, television, games (maybe he’d like visual novels bc he struggles with skill games?), etc.

Also it would work especially well if you were mischievous.
