I love all the melancholy and weight in Shang-chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings. It's something I tried to explore here but I'm (of course) unsure if that was conveyed well.

Also shoutout to the sweet anon who asked about a part 2 to i'll be getting over you my who life many months ago! It kept some of my motivation for this up and kept me from deleting the draft.

Anyways, I love Shang-Chi and I would love to see more writing for him!!!

You think you catch glimpses of him throughout the years. A mirage of his figure around the corner, in a shadowed hallway. When you lay outside among the trees, you swear you see a vision of his face as the sun shines down on you. In the brief moments where the quiet becomes too much at the compound, you glance over your shoulder to see if he’s waiting for you, like he did before when you would sneak around for a quick word or a forbidden touch.

But Shang-qi is not there anymore, not here at all, and you don’t see him anywhere. He feels everywhere but you also know he is nowhere you can reach. Nowhere you can go. He cannot appear to you, even when that’s the only thing you want.

He is a ghost that lingers, but he is a ghost nonetheless.

And when you finally escape the compound and head for Ta Lo, you resolve to leave his ghost where it belongs: in the past.

You aren’t expecting to see Shang-qi in Ta Lo when he finally comes. You aren’t expecting to see him at all. Nan had told you that they had prepared for both his and Xialing’s arrival, but you doubted that he would ever come.

You are not even part of the welcoming group when his company rolls up in the car. First treated as a hostile group, then welcome like family. Your duties keep you physically away but the longing in your heart pulls at you no matter the distance you happen to keep from Shang-qi or Xialing.

You long to see his face, to watch as his eyes light with recognition (if, in fact, he did remember you at all). An ache deepens, and the pulling in your heart becomes slightly painful. You decide you don’t know what will be worse: living with the pain in your heart and leaving him alone or being in his presence after fifteen years of absence and wondering and grief.

When you feel your heart has gathered enough courage, you go to find him. Though the scenery is much different, for a moment you are reminded of when you would look for him at just fourteen years old, willing to risk what felt like it all at the time just to see him transiently.

The teenage love you for him that felt so all-consuming now just makes you feel forlorn.

You sit down next to him and greet him, "Shang-qi."

He turns his face and looks at you. It takes a second but there is a little surprise amidst his recognition. There is something else, too, something deeper. Something that you may not have words for but you understand all the same. A tenderness and vulnerability is there, but also shadows and fog. The rawness of what he felt fifteen years ago has dimmed with age and grief

"It was a long time ago when we last saw each other..."

"I didn't even know if you were still alive." He shakes his head and clasps his hands together on his lap.

"I found my own way," You smile, leaning in to his space before retreating.

There is a brief silence that elapses. One filled with a strange, awkward sense of peace. Or maybe comfort.

"I have heard you are trying to find your own."

"That's one way of putting it." His brow furrows and his eyes take on a different kind of shine. It's not as light as it was.

There is a gap of fifteen years in which you both lived without each other. Whatever innocent little thing you shared with him before he left to make another life for himself has been overshadowed and forgotten for things far more substantial.

For a moment the teenage girl in your heart cries. She wonders if you will ever know his lips on yours or his hands in your hair or a smile meant only for you. It is all she has ever wanted. Adult you, however, knows that the chasm between then and now is something that may not ever be able to be bridged between the two of you. And though Shang-qi is sitting beside you now, you recognize that you may never get to find what was lost so suddenly fifteen years ago.

Shang-qi may never stop being a ghost that haunts all your what-ifs and maybes.

“You were so heavy,” Your hands close around his. “So hard. Brittle. When I was younger, until you left the compound, all I wanted was to help you bear your burdens, but I know now that you wouldn’t have let me. If I asked you now, I think you still wouldn’t let me.”

Shang-qi doesn’t say anything, but you can tell from his eyes that he’s listening. He’s always listening. But his muscles are still tense, his shoulders tight. Still listening but withholding at the same time. Always withholding.

“I know I can’t solve this for you — whatever it is you are trying to fix. I can’t do any of this for you; you must do it for yourself,” You remove your hands from their place over his and expel a deep breath. “But I hope you know you can lay some of what you carry down.”

It is still quiet when you stand from your seated position next to him, but the quiet has transformed. It’s no longer peaceful for comfortable or familiar, but solemn and weighty. No matter how much you may wish to, you cannot untangle Shang-qi’s knots for him. You cannot bridge the gap between the present and past for the both of you. You can only decide to do it for yourself and and hope that he meets you halfway.

“Shang-qi,” It takes a moment, but he tilts his head up and his eyes meet yours, “I know who you are. I’ve never forgotten. But you seem to have, and what we — I — want is for you to remember.”

Literally one of my new favorite platonic Star Wars fics. Short, fluffy, funny, and absolutely perfect. The 212th’s general and reader’s Jedi Master needs a nap and, to quote the fic, “Obi-Wan Kenobi was many things, but attuned to his own self-care was not one of them.” Hijinks ensue.

Happy Lunar New Year all, please find below my ultimate reunion dinner fic rec a.k.a. 360-degree feedback by bysine

“Ma,” Wong says over a feeling of rising panic, “you’re here for a holiday, there’s really no need —”

“I bring already, all my pots and my wok,” says Wong’s mother, gesturing towards a battered carton that they’d checked in despite knowing full well that their son can make portals. “We go Chinatown, see whether they got sell pig’s stomach okay.”

“What about Mei in Bintulu?” Wong asks.

“Make a portal for her lah,” says Wong’s mother. “You ask just now that minotaur whether he has any dietary requirements.” She pauses. “Think he cannot eat beef, yah? Never mind, I make some vegetarian dishes also.”

“Ma, Master Rintrah is not —”

“Call all your friends to come ah,” says Wong’s mother. It sounds equal parts a gracious invitation and a threat.

The list of people Wong is comfortable calling to give a last-minute dinner invitation to is, surprisingly, longer than Wong had initially thought. Xialing is having a corporate reunion dinner with all the Ten Rings headquarters members who don’t have families to have reunion dinner with (it turns out the Ten Rings, like the Masters of the Mystic Arts, has a certain self-selecting demographic), but Madisynn cancels a dubious-sounding double date with Troy, her maybe-boyfriend, and Winner, her ex who wants to reconnect, because “Wongers, I’d kill a person for your mom and I haven’t even met her”.

Tina, as Master of the Sanctum in which said dinner is taking place, gets an automatic invitation, as does America, who is on a trainee rotation to the New York Sanctum and is also unofficially Wong’s most gifted disciple. Rintrah is obliged to come, as Wong’s mother is already making vegetarian ngoh hiang and lotus leaf glutinous rice for his benefit.

Sam sounds oddly touched when Wong calls him to ask (also to cancel their Saturday dim sum appointment on account of Wong having to bring his parents to see the High Line on Aunty Geok Bee’s recommendation), and when he says he can come Wong informs him that Barnes is welcome as his plus one.

This comfortably makes a table of ten, except on the day of the dinner Wong answers the door of the New York Sanctum at four in the afternoon to find Mordo standing there with a bag of rice, assorted groceries, and a six-pack of Wong’s father’s favourite beer.

“Last minute shopping list from your mother,” says Mordo, by way of explanation. “She added me on WhatsApp the last time I visited.”

Wong stares at Mordo, who looks visibly uncomfortable. It is, after all, the first time he will be setting foot in a Sanctum Sanctorum since he’d left the order.

“Stop trying to usurp my position as the favourite child,” Wong finally grouches, and pushes open the door.

“That’s definitely your sister,” says Mordo, and follows Wong inside.

“All of my children are my favourite —” Wong’s mother declares later, over the contained chaos of the kitchen. Wong’s father, in the meantime, has ensconced himself in a corner where he is painstakingly cutting and arranging fruit in individual bowls.

“Thanks, Ma,” says Wong.

“— but Mei wouldn’t have forgotten to buy rice while we were at Hong Kong Supermarket,” Wong’s mother finishes, while jerking her chin towards the rice cooker. “Cook the rice! No time already!”

By the time everyone has arrived, the large round table Tina had managed to locate is heaving with food, which they all have to hold on for while America helps Wong’s mother take a video to send to her friends, including the infamous Aunty Miao.

“Oh my God Mrs Wong everything looks amaze,” says Madisynn, which is followed by a chorus of compliments. Wong’s mother blushes and waves them off with practiced ease.

Wong’s sister, whom he had interrupted in the middle of preparing for a big court case, catches his eye from across the table to give him a look which clearly says, Kor why am I stuck here with all your weirdo friends.

“Oh it’s nothing, anyhow cook one,” Wong’s mother is still saying, while also watching Rintrah with eagle eyes as he takes his first bite of ngoh hiang.

“How?” she says sharply as he chews.

Rintrah is spared from having to reply by the appearance of Strange, who stumbles into the dining room smelling of sulphur and looking generally singed.

“Sorry I’m late,” he announces to the room at large, even though Wong hadn’t even invited him. “I just averted the destruction of an entire dimension!”

There is a stunned pause.

“Okay Doctor Stephen,” Wong’s mother says, breaking the silence, “you get changed and come down to eat.”

“Is that something we need to be worried about?” asks Sam.

“I think that’s the kind of something we don’t ask about, Cap,” Barnes says, around a mouthful of yam and pork belly.

Strange, in the meantime, has caught sight of Mordo where he’s seated next to Wong’s father, and is eyeing him with equal parts suspicion and disbelief.

“Mordo,” says Strange.

“Strange,” says Mordo. “I’ve promised not to try to kill you today.”

“Choy,” says Wong’s mother, heaping fried meatballs onto Mordo’s bowl. “Don’t kill here kill there.”

Some are still active, some are abandoned, all of them have something special that struck my imagination and made them unforgettable. I’ve excluded unfinished series from this list. They may get their own list later.

Having a mythology halo was a little ominous, but at least it got the System off his back. Shen Qingqiu was way less annoyed about that than he was about transmigrating into a human in a world where swans didn't even exist.

In which Shen Yuan pisses the System off and it sends him straight into the Endless Abyss.

Four years later, Shen Qingqiu does the same to Luo Binghe.

Shang Qinghua goes through the pages with renewed vigor, paying special attention to the margins and the details. Now that he’s looking for it, he can see the little transcriptions everywhere, running alongside the lines of an ink drawing or around the perimeter of a talisman, or in the corner under a section on growth rates of chi-stealing willows. The English scripts ruthlessly spoil or mock his book in turn.

Not only is it a cultivator’s field guide, it’s a tourist’s guide. Someone is touring the world he’s made.

Shen Yuan leaves his spoilers lying around. This becomes Shang Qinghua's problem, and what kind of bro would he be if he didn't make it Shen Yuan's problem too?

In which Shen Yuan flounces around the PIDW timeline in different roles and makes a mess of everything. He likes to think he helped make some things better, but he’s pretty sure he made things worse too.

Several decades after the Liulija was shattered and its keeper murdered, Wen Kexing returns to the mortal realm to finally unleash his bloody revenge. He's barely set foot over the border before he meets an immortal who seems bizarrely unconcerned by this.

Upon the news that a new Valley Master had ascended the throne, the jianghu was struck with fear. Fear that tenuous peace would end. Fear of another war that would deal them more casualties. In what the men of the jianghu would never admit was desperation, they sent peace offerings. Wine, food, fabrics...women. There is no war. No praise or rebuke, but the offerings continue.

Zhou Zishu cannot fathom why he can't get the attention of the Valley Master, whether it be for information gathering or assassination. He makes a pretty woman, after all, the newest 'offering' added to this donated harem of his.

He has a lot more luck when the Valley Master brings a few of the harem women with him to the Heroes Conference, of all things. Especially when he finds something of a platonic zhiji in the sharp Zhou Xu and begins to trust her with his thoughts.

He definitely has more luck when Wen Kexing proposes he pose as a man to infiltrate the Conference - although to be quite frank, the Valley Master acts...oddly, once he shows his true self.

Evan Buckley is 18 when he learns that in twelve years he is going to die.

Now, he has only two goals: do some good with the time he has left, and minimize the damage his death will do to the people he cares about. He thinks he's doing an okay job--until Eddie Diaz joins the 118. Buck knows the walls he's put up aren't the strongest, but he wasn't counting on a werewolf and his adorable son to just blow them to smithereens. But it doesn't matter how he feels about Eddie. The Changeling Child curse is impossible to break.

Sometimes when it’s a close call with a monster, any healing supplies are always nearby, sometimes they always have the right amount of coin, sometimes Jaskier just knows exactly what is needed for any given situation

Hey! I'm rereading your older fics as I've been fixating on Loki again after few years. And I just finnished Will to Live and oh my god. I love it so much! You're are definitely still THE writer in Loki fandom for me.

I know you moved on to other fandoms, but are you still keeping up with MCU? If so, what are your thoughts on Love and Thunder? Are you excited?

ahhh, I am still very proud of that fic. possibly one of my personal favorites, actually, at least among my (completed) longfics. the fucked up fix-it of my heart

and augh. I - have not really been keeping up with the MCU. Black Widow was the last movie I watched in theaters, I watched Shang-Chi, and I watched Wandavision, part of Falcon and Winter Soldier (not planning on the rest), Hawkeye and Loki (except the last episode which I still haven't finished, sldkjfsldkjf at this point it feels like it's just going to get funnier the longer it goes until I do)

and after that I've just kinda...drifted off? the emotional engagement is just not really there at this point. 😕 which makes me a little sad! as far as where I am with Thor: Love and Thunder...eh. I would like to be more excited about it than I am, but my feelings right now are just sort of... "this is probably going to mean a lot of wank, I'm not a big fan of the tonal turn toward comedy, my personal blorbo isn't there..." so yeah. *shrug* I'll...probably watch it? at some point? but I'm not feeling particularly hyped. I haven't watched the trailer.

to get a little real for a moment: I've drifted away from plenty of fandoms before, that's kind of part of the fandom lifecycle for me, for the most part. sometimes I drift back, sometimes I don't. but there is something sort of uniquely painful about falling out of love with a franchise that I had so much emotional attachment to for a long time. I sort of...try not to think about it a lot.

I'm still not saying ~the sun has set forever~ on my attachment to the MCU characters I loved most (though I think it pretty much has on the franchise as it is currently running). but at least for now I think it's just sort of a sad thing for me. a little reminiscent of looking at things I wrote or created with an old friend I've fallen out of touch with.

this is not to say I don't still deeply appreciate people who are still reading and commenting and reccing my Loki fic! I absolutely do - I'm delighted by the fact that that fic will get to live on beyond my personal involvement. that's one of the reasons I leave all my fic up. I think it's just inflected my relationship with personally engaging with the movies that are coming out now - which is to say, I'm not.

sorry about the kinda downer response to your very kind ask, anon. just figured maybe this was worth laying out, and also it's something I was thinking about lately.

When Wong’s mother had come back from the Blip, the first thing she’d said when she’d called Wong had been, “Wah, did you see the exchange rate for the US dollar? So good, better change more money now.”

“How’s Pa?” Wong had asked, because his father had spent the past five years declaring that he had to get used to life without Wong’s mother and that ‘life goes on’, while rigidly clinging to the exact same routine he and Wong’s mother had kept ever since they’d both retired. At least Wong’s father hadn’t been alone; Wong’s sister had moved back to Ipoh from Bintulu.

“Pa is also changing money,” Wong’s mother had replied. She’d paused long enough for Wong to think, slightly hysterically, that perhaps she would say something about how she and his father were actually coping.

And then she’d said, “Oh Pa said you got a promotion is it? Because that angmoh also kena Blip?” and Wong had assumed that his parents had been just fine.
