#sci-fi is hard to write

Even though I quit WattPad, I'm definitely not giving up on my writing. I might finish that Alice in Wonderland but set in Space story one day or... write something completely original or go back to poetry again. I have not yet decided but then again, why should I? It will be what it will be.

Don't shame people for writing or enjoying more grounded settings. People writing speculative fiction that cares about realism in certain aspects isn't stopping you from writing something that doesn't care about realism. "It's fantasy that shouldn't matter" isn't universal, if someone cares about that part of their worldbuilding you don't have a right to say they shouldn't. Just like how somebody talking agaisnt your world for being unrealistic in a place where you don't care about that level of realism sucks, it sucks an equal amount to dismiss someone striving for realism because you'd personally be fine with those aspects being unrealistic.
"Just let people enjoy things" applies to hard science fiction and low fantasy as much as it applies to soft science fiction and high fantasy.

no man but if byler isnt endgame its just gonna be so disappointing especially if mileven stays the main couple. like okay guess mike was genuinely just an asshole. guess he barely had an arc. guess el never truly developed and just regressed instead. guess another gay character gets an unhappy ending. fucking hell

Even though I'm a bit guilty of it myself with my own space opera setting (it's supposed to have a retro aesthetic), it's surprising how science fiction has been so permeated by cynicism and what I can best define as "End of History" thinking that the only thing pop sci fi seems able to imagine is "the future will be the same as today (or even worse), but there will be Cool Laser Guns"
(lately even the lasers have been replaced by regular bullets)
What I mean is that much like it's easier to imagine the end of the world than the end of capitalism, it's easier to imagine our current capitalist system extending indefinitely but now In Space rather than imagine societal changes. Like, this it guys? We're gonna have to pay rent and fight pointless wars and be ruled by corporate suits forever? are we actually gonna have fucking CEOs as we explore the galaxy?
This is it? You can't imagine a better world than this?
Even when sci-fi authors talk about realism, it's usually about how to make ships pound each other harder with missiles, not how about society will evolve in the future, what changes might technology bring to society (the whole point of science fiction in my opinion). It's just Today, But With Lasers. We will still have corporations, nation-states, cops, war, the same society we have now. But Now With Lasers.
anyways, for a good start, read Banks and LeGuin, but there are others, lots more, who dare to imagine what actual futures might look like, they just aren't as well known

all about kkariko! the infodump is finally ready.
kkariko are soft-bodied invertibrate creatures hailing from a planet known as rika. they're social and familial, living in highly complex family groups. they also make extensive use of tools and accessories in their daily lives. in this way, their behavioral model resembles the behavioral models of humans, but kkariko have some major differences too. an example - kkariko have five "sexes" - or maybe they have no sexes? all kkariko are born "neuter", with the organs used for recreation vestigal in their bodies. however, kkariko can develop into one of four "sexual" sexes to play certain roles in mating and infant rearing. kkariko are able to switch sex multiple times in their lives - it's seen as cosmetic to them. the five socially recognized kkariko sexes are thus: neuter sex, the sex which kkariko are born as. egglayer sex, the sex which can inject pheromones into another kkariko, receive "spermatophores", and lay eggs. inseminator sex, the sex which can make "spermatophores" (actually more like "spear" matophores). brooding sex, the sex which can grow a pouch and grow eggs in it and feed babies using their specialized mouth organ. and finally, protector sex, which also has a special mouth organ and a "spine" for protecting babies.
kkariko babies start life as eggs. eventually, they hatch, and just look like tiny little kkariko. kkariko at such a young age molt many times, and with each molt, they grow more and more. molting intensity usually tapers off after the 27th molt, and size change only gets smaller and molt frequency lower as kkariko age. kkariko have very high infant mortality rates - on average, a clutch of kkariko eggs numbers 20, but its considered lucky if just 4 survive to their 27th molt. rrikrik was in a clutch of 17, but half were laid "out of pouch" (common in almost all kkariko cultures, ensures that brooder attention isn't so divided) and only two ended up hatching.
kkariko have two possible pigments used in their skin. one pigment creates red/pink colors, whilst the other creates blue/gray colors. both can coexist on a single body - like a calico cat - as well as patches of different intensity of pigmentation which can produce darker or lighter pigmentation. these pigments also determine the eye color of kkariko. however, kkariko tend to have a "base color" which affects the tint on their exoskeletons. base color isn't neccesarily the most abundant color on a kkariko.
their bodies are long and squishy, with thick, highly pressured "blood" keeping their muscles and organs in place. kkariko have four pairs of legs, and they alternate between an all-legs undulatory gait and a quadrapedal four beat gait depending on the movement speed and additional actions required of them. they can also stand up on their back legs for intimidation points. but their balance is pretty bad in this state and they can't walk without lots of practice and lower leg strength. at the end of each limb, they have three digits encased in flexible exoskeleton. two digits at the very end of the limb, and one slightly down. these digits can be used to grasp things and manipulate objects, although they're generally clumsy. they also have a long, fat, tapering tail. this tail can be moved independently, but is usually just dragged along the ground behind the kkariko due to its weight. kkariko have a small, round head at the end of their body, where many of their sensory organs are.
kkariko heads are pretty simple. it is on their head that a kkariko has their two pairs of eyes, their primary mucus ducts, their facial palps, their antennae, their mouth, and their first lung. the first pair of kkariko eyes are kind of a hybrid between forward-facing and side-facing. they've got a wide degree of vision. this eyeset sees pretty well, and is generally used to identify objects near the kkariko's face. for this reason, they're nearsighted. the second pair of eyes sits above the kkariko's head and protude upwards. this pair can see nearly 260 degrees around the kkariko, and experiences vision in a very abstracted way, largely triggered by bright colors and movement. these eyes also move independently of each other. as a prey animal, kkariko have evolved this set of eyes to continually watch around them as they use their first set of eyes to look for food and watch their friends. both eyes jut out from the head of the kkariko when in use. the lower set of eyes have a pair of semi-translucent eyelids which occasionally can hydrate the eye, but kkariko generally don't need to blink much. the upper pair of eyes don't need to blink at all, because they have a thick protective coating. both pairs of eyes are retractable, however, and when kkariko are getting ready to go sleep, they retract them back into their heads, with only a thin indigo line showing where they will pop out of later. just below their eyes is their primary mucus ducts, which produce a mucus which covers kkariko skin to keep it from drying out and getting burnt. there are more mucus ducts on their "wrists" and their tail.
the antennae sit behind the second pair of eyes, and are used to sense different types of waves and particles in the air. they process this into audible sound, vibrational information, and electromagnetic data. kkariko can have anywhere from three to five sets of antennae, and can grow an extra pair for sensing pheromones when engaging in sex. antennae can also be used to make a loud whirring noise when rubbed together or a low "clicking" noise when the bases of the antennae (known as "bulbs") grind together in the antennae sockets. these noises are recognized as distinct phones in kkariko language.
the mouth of the kkariko is typically hidden behind their exterior set of palps. these two tentacle-like appendages are used by kkariko to "taste" the air and food, to produce sounds, and to manipulate objects. kkariko palps have much finer motor control than their "hands", so delicate tasks like making art or preparing food are usually done using the exterior palps. behind these palps is the mouth. the mouth of the kkariko is indigo-violet (the color of their blood) and contains a pair of interior palps, two flat "teeth" used for crushing food, and a pair of holes, one used for communication and another used for eating. the interior palps are much thinner than the exterior palps, but serve the same purpose as their exterior friends. its a bit hard to use them to make art, as they can't reach that far outside the mouth. the lower tooth juts out of the mouth and can be moved with a good degree of freedom. when a kkariko's mouth is closed, it pushes up under the palps and the edges of the mouth retract around it, leaving the lower tooth as the only mouth organ visible. when the mouth is open, the lower tooth keeps it by moving down. the lower tooth and the upper tooth mash together to grind food up into a convenient paste, and then the interior palps and kkariko saliva helps move the food down to the esophagus, which is situated below the palps. above the palps is the kkariko's speech hole - closed during eating. kkariko are kind of messy eaters!
kkariko language is, as previously discussed, in part constructed around antennae sounds. but there is a vocal element of it too. kkariko have several groupings of lungs down their bodies, and the first lung sits at the back of their head just below their first cerebral ganglia, which is part of a long network which also travels all the way down their bodies. the lungs of the kkariko intake air from little holes underneath the "lip" of their back exoskeletons. this first lung is connected to the very end of their second exoskeleton plate, which wraps around their head to support it. connected to this lung is an "accordian" organ, which produces a melodious buzzing noise by expanding and contracting with pushed air from the lung out to the noise hole at the top of the kkariko's mouth. tone and intensity can be adjusted, and kkariko will adjust the position of their two pairs of palps and their tooth to make different noises with it. kkariko also rumble their teeth together and smack them together to speak.
on their backs, kkariko grow a heavy plated exoskeleton, used for defense and protection. this exoskeleton stretches from the head of the kkariko all the way down to their tail, ending in a spiked fanlike form which can be used to defend a kkariko. rika is very rich in metal, and heavy metals often enter kkariko diets via the plant life they eat. kkariko have very efficient filtering systems for both water and metals - water is recycled back into the body entirely and eventually expelled in defensive, stinking "farts", and metals are either pooped out in very hard and compacted dry poops, or stored in a specialized organ and used to built their exoskeletons during molts. this is where the colors in their exoskeletons come from - all the metals they eat. some of the metals even oxidize in air, and change color as time moves on! this metallic shell is very heavy, and because of that, kkariko have very strong and muscular bodies. the gravity on rika is also pretty strong, so that also aids in their big buff physiques. the exoskeleton restricts their movements somewhat - kkariko are able to move their limbs pretty freely, and can curl up into a tiny ball, but cannot arch their bodies back that far because the plates on their back prevent much movement. the kkariko in this sheet doing some sort of stretching is probably the extent to how far back a kkariko can stretch without hurting themselves.
kkariko culture is highly complex and varied. rika is hot and arid, and many kkariko live nomadic or seminomadic lives. i'll probably write another post about kkariko cultures, because this one is very long. i guess the most important thing to discuss here is kkariko fashion. kkariko are generally not very modest - they don't need to be, because their shell protects them from most weather. however, all cultures are different, and some kkariko do wear full-body clothing. the most common universal piece of clothing are "armwarmers", which wrap around the limbs like socks. kkariko often wear matching pairs for all eight of their limbs. bibs, hats, capes and aprons are also common, as well as tail aprons which protect the tail from sharp terrain when moving across the ground. tail aprons are a bit like underwear because they also cover genitals.
rowny and rrikrik for reference. rowny is 6ft tall.
v page i made when i was trying to figure out how kkariko communicate + kkariko funny faces v

Joaquin "Jack" Navarro is a lone wolf, cyborg, and quantum physicist with an infamous talent for time-fuckery.
In the 1970s, Jack and Maggie---his wife and research partner---spearheaded the exploration of spacetime manipulation, producing a pseudo-physical albeit unstable manifestation of time. Their ambitions created disastrous consequences, ones that deteriorated Jack's mind to a state of agonizing pain and madness while also garnering transcendental abilities. He lashed out at his family, becoming more like a rabid animal than a man.
His madness was contained by the very rift he created until he fell into the hands of a powerful coalition that seized the opportunity to transform him into a literal killing machine, giving him cybernetic enhancements in order to pursue their own desires of spacetime manipulation and to strike down any opposition. Here, Jack became a violent, remorseless, teleoperated executioner.
After years of this, Jack broke away from servitude when his cybernetic receiver decayed, and he isolated himself on a distant planet where he was able to start putting together memories he had lost in the madness and trauma.
He still carries a cold and violent demeanor, a raging pessimist and bitter man with a penchant for self destruction. He has no idea what he wants, teetering between wanting to restore what was lost and wanting to remain in isolation, knowing he is at the mercy of the unstable time he created.

TIME: 9:23, 12 June 2075
LOCATION: FOREST DISTRICT, FIELDS OF GLASS, ENDLESS LINES
Exiting standby mode, X7 noticed the empty bed. It quickly noticed Cay, over in the kitchen, making herself some breakfast. Heh, it thought. Kitchens in Proxima living spaces were only ever needed with organics present. Such a strange concept to shards.
It walked over to her and wrapped its arms around her gently, recalibrating its locomotion gyroscopes for the day. She was still nude - not that she didn't care, but clothing was generally seen as unnecessary in Proxima's culture. She liked to respect that.
"Hey, what're you making?" the android asked, curiously. "Pfft, not like you'd care. Pancakes."
"Heh. Don't forget your tastes are gonna totally change once you get your new body. You'll be more interested in eating that pan than whatever you're making in it."
She laughed. "Doesn't bother me. And, hey, it's not gonna stop me having my favourites."
"So you're still sure, I take it? Haven't changed your mind yet?"
"Not at all! Trust me - I prefer the upsides. And besides. I'd look cute. Like you."
X7 blushed slightly, cyan coolant rushing into its facial thermal-convection matrix.
"Y-yeah. You would."
Cay smiled, as Vertex let her continue to cook.
"Hey, by the way, you got anything for me?", the android queried.
"Oh! Right! I grabbed you what I could for work. It's mostly last-gen hardware, but it should be more interesting than the material cubes you Shards usually get. I left the box on the table."
Sitting down at the table, X7 opened up the box - inside, various assorted computer components, as well as a couple of laptops. Not brand new, but they could've probably still fetched a fair price. "Cay-thank you! This is great!!!"
"No worries. I think I'm like, in the best place to get this sorta stuff now. Anyways, enjoy." She walked over from the kitchen; sitting down opposite Vertex and placing her plate of hot pancakes in front of her.
The lombax began to dig into the stack of pancakes, as Vertex sifted through the box of hardware, picking out one of the laptop computers. It wrapped its maw around the corner, taking a clean bite - chewing with subsequent crunches - and swallowing.
"Heh. Y'know, I feel like it's gonna be cool to be able to do that. To eat whatever I want, I mean. I envy the fact that you got to wreck that millionaire's car once. That was fucking nice."
The android blushed, mid-bite. "Y-you thought that was cool?"
"Hell yeah, you're pretty amazing. They got what they deserved."

SIGNALIS SPOILERS AND WHATNOT~~
finished my second playthrough of signalis, was going for the artifact ending. then loaded my save and got the memory ending. such a good game aaaa
the memory ending made me cry, it was really heartwrenching when ariane said sorry i dont remember, i just crumpled. watching elster be so exhausted was a lot.
not really sure if i understand the artifact ending. i feel like either its really vague (on top of all the other vagueness) or if im missing something. it kind of feels like a burial of arianes memory? like elster dies and we see ariane thikning about her and elster dancing in the wrecked ship? i’m not sure. maybe someone could give me their interpretation of it?
i also found out that theres a difficulty setting and really wished i had set it to survival before my second playthrough. woulda been nice!!! I do have one more ending so i might play the game again but might also just watch it on youtube and play the game again some other time(gotta let it ruminate so i can go back in with different eyes), I wanna get all the achievements anyways.
aaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaa
all in all i fucking love this game a lot. very rarely do i replay a game so soon after playing it for the first time. its really tragic i’ll never get to experience this game for the first time again, but, so it goes. its such a beautiful game i will be thinking about it for a longgggggggggggg time. ive been wanting to talk about it so badly for so long but none of my friends have played it yet kyaaa!!! >_<
its crazy to me that the game exists the way it does. the style, the mechanics, the story, the music, everything about it oozes so much passion and care and thought. very few games have made me want to stare at every part of it to figure out how they made it look the way it did (THE GAME IS SO STYLISTICALLY RICH LIKE HOIW DID THEY DO ALL THAT) and the game mechanics are so nice to my brain, everything is so tactile and clicky and inventory management and ammo management and horror stratgey and the flesh and rust and death and love and lesbians and robots and anime!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! AAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAA
amazing game thank you rose engine, i hope they make more stuff because i really want to see it
edit:(thinking about the first time i played compared to the second. i was considerably less scared since i had a clue of waht was going on but the fear that i felt playing the first time was special to me. i really like games with stories about ‘time loops’ because the replay-ability is baked in in a cool way. especially with how the game throws information at you, viewing things again having experienced perspective shifts from information is really cool. seeing scenes again re-contextualized makes my brain go ^-^(hots quest ding sound) but going in completely blind and being afraid of everything (i especially remember being scared of the dream beach, i had literally no clue what to expect and it was nice) it all had a different flavor than the second time which is cool because i feel like i experience that kind of emotion change *with* elster. (girlie needs a FUCKING cuddle nap)
the way the game balances reality and the surreal i think is super neat. i love surrealist dream stuff a lot and i think that a video game is a super good medium for that kind of experiential stuff that really inspires me to wanna make video games. especially because then theres also this super nerdy sci fi stuff going on about robots and space regimes and magical tech(my favorite) and planetary systems and military systems and all that good shit. i similarly wanna get nerdy about stuff like military logistics while also telling a story about gay robots and girls that keep missing each other just barely in the space time continuum. i love that the game tells you a lot but also is vague and also says fuck you (affectionate) stop looking for answers and just feel it. it explains just the right amount to not feel esoteric while keeping enough vague to leave a lot up to interpretation/figure it out by playing it again/thinking about it. it plays with themes and reality and reoccuring symbolism and all that good shit that makes stories addicting to think about.) ((also one of the endings requiring beating the game once among other things that keep between playthroughs, yummyyy. games that know they are games/stories/worlds that are aware of themselves., thats good shit right there))

Already made similar post but I want to create scientist OCs so badly, but don't want to look deeply into different branches of science to figure out which one they should specialize in because I've been in a wikipedia rabbit hole of sciences, some of which I didn't even know existed, for days now and yet I have absorbed none of the information nor come closer to a conclusion, Carlos, give me strength, you're all just gonna be last name the scientist, you're specializing in the science of science, I swear, aahhh

i'm not gonna lie. I'm not the smartest person and, sometimes, the technical jargon that comes with writing sci-fi muses (especially characters like the dr, who are supposed to be quite knowledgeable about things) can really stump me / put me off writing. which is super annoying when my muse is high, but the words just won't ?? happen.
does anyone else here sort of feel that? how do you get over that block? x

something I'm hankering for is more sci-fi like Warframe, not in that it's an awful grindy MMO with impenetrable lore, but in that, it's set (almost) entirely within our solar system, but it's super far future and it's got ruins of ancient empires, hyper-tech, funky all sorts of humanity, and it's a future entirely disconnected from the modern world
like it understands that the solar system is super big, there's plenty of space to do stuff within just the solar system, you don't need to have relatively easy interstellar travel to have epic sci-fi, sure it's got no aliens but it understands how weird humanity could get if it gets the chance
it's something which though not a big thing annoys me about a lot of sci-fi is how much it often trivialises the size of a star system, with all its planets and asteroids and moons and everything, and I want more sci-fi that doesn't do that, but does do the epic space opera with the ruins of great ancient empires being fought over by not so great new empires and all that jazz
