I started posting one of my novel projects, With a Reckless Abandon on Tiktok so if anyone is interested, you can find it @vblavender on there. It's an old novel project that I am converting into an audiobook.
It's a historic fiction series about a declining noble family with three sons, The Veery brothers of Dove Grove. The story is takes place in the late regency and goes into the early Victorian era with the second generation of the family. Robert and Wren are young lovers who find each other in tragic circumstances; Wren escapes a loveless marriage to become Robert's girl. Robert wants to be a Romantic poet and has a mental breakdown that triggers the unwinding of his whole family. His eldest brother Alex is a lawyer who suffers from perfection and wanting to keep their family together despite everything going against him. Harold is the middle son, a mute musician and Alex's best friend. And of course, there are many ghosts too since this story was inspired by gothic lit, regency romance and Wuthering Heights.

what I have been reading
it's been a long time since I have done one of these and I really missed it so... here you go!
books
Rilke, Poems (tr. J.B. Leishman) : 4.5 stars — absolutely amazing I loved it. for some reason I thought I would like the excerpts of Letters to a Young Poet more but the poems really went THROUGH and I can't recommend it enough!!
Anaïs Nin, The Veiled Woman : very very very good (but spicy). veery short read. recommend but please know that it is... explicit.
Dante Alighieri, La Divine Comédie (tr. Danièle Robert) : a classic I'm struggling to get through :( still good but very slow-paced (it's a French translation of Dante's Inferno)
Marguerite Duras, Le Vice-Consul : for class, I always love a good Duras. weird but good (as all of her books). the writing is very nice. very slow paced and I have trouble understanding the characters.
articles & podcasts
"A Consciousness of Reality" : In her diary, Virginia Woolf left behind the most truthful record of what a writer’s life is actually like.
Gordon Hempton — Silence and the Presence of Everything
poem
"Almost Human" by Ocean Vuong (you should listen to the author reading it, I love his voice)

“daenerys is a villain, she burns things and executed people...”
Honestly, I don’t know how people are not tired of using this argument. Should we make a list of everyone that has executed or send someone to execute people?
Tumblr media
Jon Snow executed the people who killed him, and he also executed Janos Slynt for not obbeying his orders as Lord Commander of the Night’s Watch.
Arya Stark executed Littlefinger, a room full of Freys and Walder Frey himself, not to mention everyone else she has already killed.
Sansa had Littlefinger executed, also let’s not forget how she sent Ramsay’s dogs to “execute”/eat him alive. (not that I wept for any of those deaths)
Robb executed Lord Karstark and he killed a whole bunch of people at war.
Hells, even Catelyn Stark wanted to execute Tyrion, but he was too smart to let himself die like that.
Brienne killed a lot and we know it. She did become a Kingsguard and you don’t become a Kingsguard without some decent amount of blood on your hands or at least the ability to kill.
Podrick killed, let’s not even discuss Bronn.
Cersei burnt down THE FUCKING SEPT OF BAELOR, YUP. Like the Vatican, bae had the audacity. Not to mention everyone else she had killed, from a veery young age *melara hetherspoon*
Jaime executed the mother fucking Mad King. Not to mention everyone else he’s killed his entire life both as a Kingsguard and as Jaime himself.
NED executed the Night’s Watch deserters and I bet all of yours asses how he killed a bunch of people at Robert’s Rebellion and also at the Greyjoy Rebellion.
Tywin Lannister would send someone to die for breakfast.
The Mountain executed as a midnight snack. (Do you call what he did to Elia and the kids execution? I call it murder.)
The Hound is a fine killer, I have no idea of his body count but damn is bigger than most...
Gendry has killed. Davos has killed. Meera has killed. Lysa has killed, she was the one to poison Jon Arryn... and oh so many others I can’t recall rn...
Oh, let’s not forget Littlefinger, shall we? If we’re counting bodies, we just know he was the one to cause the War of the Five Kings so he might have the highest number rn...
Oberyn Martell has killed a lot, he was known as the Red Viper. You don’t get a name like that unless you’re lethal af.
HELLS, TYRION KILLED SHAE AND HIS OWN FATHER.
The list is fucking long, most of all your faves have killed more times than I’ve changed my clothes and I do it a lot. This is Westeros, sweeties, everyone kills everyone. Don’t go ranting on how murderous Daenerys is because Daenerys is a fucking survivor. We’re not discussing everyone’s motives to kill whoever they killed or sent to be executed, so why would you discuss Daenerys’?
She was persecuted her entire life, just for being alive. She survived all sorts of horrors one can imagine: she was raped, beaten, used, sold, manipulated and all sorts of things you can imagine. Don’t you dare call Dany a murderer because she executed two people who decided to die instead of bend the knee to the cause of a deserving Queen instead of a crazy bitch (whom I love, Cersei is that bitch you hate to love and you love to hate, Martin is brilliant with his villains) who blew up a Sept full of innocent people MEANWHILE DAENERYS WAS AT WAR.
Don’t blame Daenerys for burning men who live for rape and kill who thought themselves worthy of deciding what her life should be like.
Don’t blame Daenerys for making the best out of all the shit life threw her way.
Daenerys is not just a survivor, she’s a fighter. She fights for her rights but she also fight for what is right.
“She freed slaves only to slave them again”. Well, fuck you. She is not the Master of the Unsullied or the Dothraki. She freed them all and they decided she was worthy of their loyalty. You doubt me? She asked Missandei if she wanted to go home because she would send her home in a blink of an eye. Instead, she stayed, not because she was made but because she wanted to. Missandei loves Daenerys, as does her followers.
AS DOES JON SNOW, sorry for your bitterness, but Daenerys is not just the Mother of Dragons, she is the BREAKER OF CHAINS, BRIDE OF FIRE, SLAYER OF LIES, THE UNBURNT and she and Jon will rule Westeros, not just because they can conquer the Throne their ancestor built, but because they deserve it. They earned it.
You can bitch about it but nothing you say can take away her merit, hon. So, why not just stop it? It’s 2019, get over it.

The faded Dragon - Robert Prosinecki becomes new Olimpija boss
Olimpija Ljubljana are nothing if not ceaselessly entertaining. If one thought that managerial carnage and odd decisions were going to be consigned to the Mandaric years come the takeover of the club late last year, then you would have been proven emphatically wrong as Olimpija moved onto their third manager of the season today and it’s a name that few would have expected.
When the new owners came in, one of their first acts was to dispense with Savo Milosevic and bring in a new man, specifically Dino Skender, who had previously managed the club for the first half of the 2020/21 season and did so in a not all that impressive manner putting together a defensively solid and characteristically inconsistent side. When he was replaced with Goran Stankovic, it was no surprise.
Dino Skender, funnily enough, is also the brother of Olimpija’s technical director Marin Skender who was, yes, appointed when the new owners came in. These two facts, much like the Skenders, are related. Perhaps unsurprisingly, given that Skender took a fun, attacking side from Milosevic, added a bunch of players such as Matko, Pilj and Prtajin, and turned that side into a defensively solid and characteristically inconsistent side (with one key issue we’ll get to in a second), Skender wasn’t especially popular with the Olimpija fanbase.
Exacerbating this was the baffling and, in hindsight, absolutely destructive change of goalkeeper from Nejc Vidmar, who had been at the club since 2016 serving them veery admirably and consistently, to Ivan Banic, who had spent the latter part of the autumn benchwarming behind Dominik Kotarski at Gorica in the HNL. Banic, at the start of this season, was reasonably well thought of and the change in keeper was entirely at the behest of Dino Skender, who seemed not to get along with Vidmar and wanted him exiled. To be fair to Banic, he wanted first team football that he wasn’t going to get behind the rapidly improving Kotarski.
To also be fair to Banic, his Olimpija spell has swiftly turned into his own personal hell. Olimpija sit in third, seven points behind Maribor. A kind assessment of Banic’s personal contribution to that gap would say that, had Vidmar been between the sticks, the gap would be at worst one point, given Banic is at least directly responsible for losses to Domzale and Celje. With Dino Skender’s biggest call in the transfer market and absolute bust, and that call being to exile a player who rightly has a large amount of credit in the bank with Olimpija fans, it was hardly a surprise that he eventually paid for that error with his job.
So, Dino Skender went after a 1-1 draw with Domzale that he could probably consider himself a little unlucky to not have won given Domzale’s goal was a wondergoal and that Olimpija ended up playing much of the second half with ten men after Mustafa Nukic got sent off for an attempted over-the-shoulder scissors kick that connected only with the head of a defender. And his replacement?
When you consider Olimpija’s new owners, you have to consider that their key task at the club is to bring stability after the wild years of Mandaric. That they should be able to bring in a manager of quiet competence who is used to a longer term project and who can build the side bit by bit to match the exploits on the continental stage of, say, Mura this season.
Instead of this, after hiring and firing the technical director’s brother (which, if nothing else, should make Christmas awkward), they’ve gone and hired Robert Prosinecki on a contract to the end of the 23/24 season.
Robert Prosinecki, the player, is arguably one of the most enigmatic and talented players to ever grace the game. At his peak, he was a generational talent who made simple things seem like genius because his mind and instinct worked on a pace higher than his peers. That is Robert Prosinecki the player.
Robert Prosinecki the manager?
Prosinecki has been in management since 2010. His time at Crvena Zvezda saw the side go backwards. He took Kayserispor from 5th to the relegation spots in his year there, crossing the 12/13 and 13/14 seasons. His spell at Azerbaijan was one of their best but his time as Bosnia-Herzegovina saw initial promise soon turn into the side entering a nosedive that they haven’t yet recovered from, topped off with some odd behaviour like resigning and then unresigning a couple of days later in late 2019 and then actually leaving about six weeks later. He returned to Kayserispor, which went badly, then moved to Denzilispor, which went worse.
Prosinecki has had success, in particular during his early time as BiH manager. He hasn’t really had success as a club manager - given that success as Crvena Zvezda manager is ultimately judged by either winning the league or taking over a poorer side mid-season and making clear progress towards winning the league, that a spell in which Prosinecki failed really to do either is his most successful club spell isn’t exactly going to inspire confidence. The name Prosinecki inspires a short-term positive reaction but his CV shows that he hasn’t really come out of that with much in the way of positives in the medium term as a manager. Prosinecki has said the right things in terms of wanting the side to be positive, attacking and so on - given that Olimpija do have a very good attacking roster, that’s a start - but for a manager that feels like a short term fix designed to boost their flagging title aspirations, a two year deal is odd. For a club that should crave stability and long term planning, Prosinecki doesn’t seem like the ideal fit.
But then again, it’s Olimpija. Doing slightly puzzling things is kind of their whole deal.
This is another in a long line of them.

HEY YOU: BROKE WITCH
DO YOU WANT WITCH BOOKS?
NO METAPHYSICAL SHOP?
NO ACCESS TO A LIBRARY?
POOR AF??
KINDLEBOOKS ARE YOUR SUPER CHEAP FRIENDS!!!!!!
You don’t even need an actual Kindle, you can download the app onto your phone and get the books delivered to the phone directly. Here’s a selection of super cheap (or free) books you can download, under the cut.
Note: these are all quite short, which is definitely reflective of their price (some of them are literally £0 (I’m in England so everything’s in Pounds) so don’t expect a 700000 page books about EVERYTHING. It’s all short and I don’t agree with everything in every book, so you probably won’t either (how every witch book is, tbh) so take it all with a pile of salt.
-          ‘One Heart, Many Gods: An Absolute Beginners Guide to Polytheism’ by Lucy Valunos (£0)
How to honour your gods every single day, short practices for the morning and an idea of how to make time for your practice
 -          ‘An Introduction to the Ways of the Buddha: Buddhism for Beginners’ by Shalu Sharma (£0)
Very short, talks about the Noble Truths and the 8 Fold Path and a very brief explanation of the Buddha as a person.
 -          ‘Empath: Discover your Type and Achieve Your Full Empath Potential’ by Frank Knoll (£2.29)
Short and sweet. Different types of empaths and a few ideas about how to protect yourself, feel awesome and get better at being an empath
 -          ‘A Short Guide to Astrology in Magick’ by Raven Starwind (£0.99)
The title doesn’t lie: this is SHORT. Basically, it’s a short introduction and history of astrology, and then an explanation of the different signs, the planets they’re linked to and what the positions of the moon in the Zodiac mean for magick.
 -          ‘Traditional Witchcraft for Urban Living’ by  Melusine Drace (£0.99)
Some of it’s weird, but it’s a good book for people who want to use more traditional magick when living in the city (if the title didn’t tell you that). Personally, I like using the energies of the city, rather than trying to escape it, but this is a good book, especially for the price.
 -          ‘From Agate to Zion a comprehensive guide to Gemstone & Crystal Power’ by Robert W Wood (£0.99)
Does this have every crystal??????? No. It doesn’t have some of my favourites actually, but it’s a great starting point and the author has a Diploma in Hypnotherapy. So he knows a lot. He has a bunch of books on the Kindle store about crystals, new age stuff and magic and the most expensive one ‘Power for Life’ is only £6.95 (the majority of them are £0.99)
 -          ‘Dreams: Learn How To Interpret Your Dreams and Discover The Magic and Beauty Behind Them’ by Theodore Maddoz (the most expensive on this list at £1.99)
Brief history of dream interpretation and Freud psychology and an interpretation of a lot of the common dream types: falling dreams, chasing dreams, belief dreams etc.
 -          ‘Buddha in Blue Jeans: An Extremely Short Simple Zen Guide to Sitting Quietly and Being Buddha’ by Tai Sheridan (£0)
VEERY short. Has a few ideas and things you’ll realise through meditation. I suggest using the different chapters as starting points for different meditations rather than as an exploration of Buddhism. But it’s free, so whatever.
Hope you all enjoy and feel free to add your own suggestions!!!

Final tweaks + odd jobs
Rotation when changing gravity
One piece of feedback we got while playtesting the game was that a slight pause when changing the direction of gravity would help with the controls. Rather than have them happen instantly it gives the player a chance to slightly process the new orientation.
Tumblr media
I basically added this chunk into the playercontroller. The playercontroller lerps the player into their new directional position, before allowing them to fall.
There was an issue however getting him to lerp into a downwards position. For some reason no matter what i did with the script, the model wouldnt lerp it would just immediately rotate downwards. However the lerp still paused for the same amount of time as the other rotations so i ended up just implementing it as it was.
Postprocessing
Once everything else had been finished i also went through my levels (level 4+5) and added some postprocessing scripts from the unity standard assets bundle. I created several different profiles and experimented with each level as different levels needed levels of intensity with lighting.
Shadow/hologram graphic bug
Before i implemented the hologram function i included a shadow projector below the character (from the unity standard assets kit). We noticed that there was a pretty big issue where the shadow would project over the hologram and create this awful black goo effect of the hologram blending with the shadow.
I fixed the issue by adding a ‘hologram’ tag to the hologram and excluding ‘hologram’ objects from each instance of the shadow throughout the levels.
Another thing was that partway through development we realized that the hologram was cut a little short, it didnt stretch far enough to reach all the surfaces and visually looked like it was misrepresenting the position of the player. I fixed this by creating a new hologram prefab that was just scaled up quite largely. I also went through and updated this new prefab into each level.
Scene animations implementation + Canvas work
Ivy had designed some really great animations that correspond to the objects that Orion collects throughout the story. After i had finished all the cutscene scripting i went through into each level and included the animation in the canvas, certain cutscene scripts would trigger the animation to appear when the player collected an objective.
It was a bit challenging actually getting the animations to animate on the canvas. They were animated sprites originally and worked perfectly when dragged into the scene as a normal object, but to be placed properly on the screen they needed to be canvas objects.
I managed to fix this by creating new animations and attaching them to an image object containing the sprite. It took a little bit of time keyframing in each frame of the sprite but it meant the animations sat on the screen as intended.
Although Tristan handled most of the menu content I went in and implemented the animation and loading images Ivy had designed a while back. She’d designed them for a loading screen however the game didnt require that so i felt like they would be well suited as a main menu screen especially because she’d done such a great job on them.
I also implemented the Orion face sprite she designed into the cutscene script. I added an extra parameter to the cutscene function. A true or false variable that if true will have orions face appear above the text box. It didnt take long to go through and modify each instance of cutscene to allow for this, alongside this i went through and included the sprite in each stage to ensure no bugs with the scene control scripts.
There was also a bit of work required at the end to ensure that the canvases all lined up as they should. Tristan implemented the pause menu canvases but i had implemented all the scene canvas content. While testing builds and doing final run throughs i found that a lot of the canvas items were skewed and didn't line up properly in different resolutions. After a lot of trial and error however i managed to get most of them lining up properly, using anchors on each canvas piece.
Surface materials
Just realized i havent (i think) talked about the surfaces i made that covered all the structures in the game. All the surface materials (bricks, tiles, plaster etc.) were made by me in magicaVoxel. Although they are 2d it ended up working really well doing them in magicaVoxel because i could view them in an isometric orientation. I’d export them as a png and drag them onto surfaces. I ended up duplicating a lot of the materials along the way as many of them needed unique tiling settings to avoid stretching and warped patterns.
Sound
I left implementing sound till the veery last minute. This wasnt too much of an issue though because it was pretty simple to add into each level.
Most levels only contained a background piece of music that didnt require any scripting so i only needed to add the audio source and the music. My fourth level also used an ambient water effect alongside the music.
Both Robert and i selected the music for our own levels, however all the music used throughout the game ended up being by the same person. Although we didnt set out to do this it ended up working really well as the music all fits together really nicely.
In the cutscenes there were several levels that required specific sound effects to be played. Specifically the door opening, the sci fi door opening, the electrical current, the thump as the objects go flying upwards in 5.3 and the crash when they come back down.
Aside from the sounds that i sourced and referenced for my prototype below are the sources for all the sounds used in the game.

An affair between Regency-era teenagers, 17 year old Serenity "Wren" Wilton Finch and her neighbor, 16 year old Robert Veery have explosive results.
Though she is taken in by Robert's charms, Wren is already married to a much older and less charming man, Mr. Finch. After Robert saves Wren from her abusive husband, Wren is taken back to Robert's father's house, Dove Grove. Dove Grove is the finest house in their North English county though it hides many terrible secrets and woes of the noble Veery family.
To make matters more complicated, Robert is not exactly who he appears to be either. Not too soon after Wren is taken in by the Veerys, Robert runs away after his best friend and former flame, Collin, convinced by a Manic obsession that he has to save Collin from an unwanted marriage. Unbeknownst to Robert, he has left Wren pregnant with his child.
Wren is left with Robert's gruff father, a former naval officer, and two older brothers, a perfectionist lawyer, Alexander and a mute pianist, Harold. Alexander prepares to marry a wealthy cousin to fix the problems created in the wake of Robert's disappearance, despite the fact that he still has feelings for his former fiancee, Molly Dorset. When Molly marries the newly wealthy Mr. Finch, Alexander realizes he must give up his long lived hope of reuniting with Molly.
As Robert is dragged into a dodgy mental institution, Wren decides to make for France where her sister, Hope lives with her husband, Francois, and their growing family. Ghosts befriend a lonely and frightened Robert while he starts to uncover sinister deeds in the asylum. Robert tries desperately to survive as Wren finds a possible new love in Francois' mysterious and handsome best friend, Claude Martin.
This story is told in alternating perspectives; mainly Robert, Wren, Alexander and Harold though more characters will speak as the story continues. This story mainly runs through the years 1817-1820 with a few flashbacks. Original Written in 2018.
