“Hey,” Ella smiled but it quickly fell as she looked at Logan. “What’s wrong?”
“Why would you think something is wrong?” He walked towards her and tried to pull her into his arms, but she backed up.
“You’re leaving.” It wasn’t a question but a statement.
“I … I have to.”
“It’s because of my dad,” Ella began to walk towards her car. “You know what, Logan, that’s fine. Leave. It’s what you’re best at.”
Logan sighed. “Yes, I’m leaving. The cops are after me, your dad is a cop …” He stepped forward again to pull her in his arms and this time, Ella relented. “I need to do this.”
“Come on, El, please try to understand.”
“I understand that you’re a coward,” she spat out as Logan’s eyes widened. “But that’s fine, Logan.”
Ella shook her head. “Say goodbye, and hey, how about once more -- for good luck! Then walk away, like you usually do.”
Logan sucked his lips in between his teeth to hide a smirk. Ella’s fiery attitude and smart mouth are what drew him to her in the first place. This is not the time to smile. “I’m sorry, El, I really am.”
Ella stepped back and turned to walk towards her car.
Logan watched her for a moment with his hands stuffed in his pockets. “Bye, Troublemaker,” he whispered.
Once Ella reached over to pull the door handle, she turned and saw that he was gone. “Goodbye, Logan.”
Ella’s phone rang loudly and startled her. She quickly swiped to answer. “Hey, I’m on my way.”
“I know, I know!” Riya’s excited squeal came through the phone and Ella thought she had gone deaf. “I got us into Nightingale!”
“Really? That’s a brand new place that only lets in celebs and hot people.”
She heard Riya sigh loudly. “El, just get over here okay?”
“Yeah, yeah I’m coming,” Ella grumbled and hung up the phone. The club was the last place she wanted to be, but maybe it’ll get her mind off of Logan. And Liam.
She turned her 1998 hot red please-give-me-a-ticket-officer Fourier on and it roared to life. Ella screeched forward and punched it into gear as she flew down the street to her friend’s house.
20,000 feet in the air
“Sir,” Bastien appeared from the cockpit. “We’ll be landing in LAX soon.”
Liam nodded. “Thank you.”
Drake stood from his seat after smacking Max in the face to wake up. “Ready? We have reservations for a club called Nightingale.”
“You know I don’t like clubs, Drake,” Liam’s brow arched at his best friend. “Can we just go out to eat?”
“But we can’t cancel!” Maxwell hollered as he bounced up from his seat.
“I’ll cancel all the other reservations okay?” Drake patted Liam’s shoulder reassuringly. “The one tonight can’t be canceled.”
“Alright,” Liam sat back in his seat as he waited for the plane to land.
As soon as the jet touched down, the trio was ushered through the back while passports and luggage were inspected. Two black SUVs with tinted windows waited for them in the terminal, a man in a suit with dark sunglasses stood next to the vehicle.
Liam gave Bastien a confused look. “What’s going on?”
Bastien shook his head slightly and turned to greet the suited man with a handshake. “Sir, this is Tatum Mendoza.”
Liam plastered a careful smile on his face and stuck his hand out. “Nice to meet you, Mr. Mendoza.”
“Your Highness, please call me Tatum,” the young man shook Liam’s hand and bowed. “I’m the guard for the President of Rutherland’s daughter.”
“Alright, well Tatum I’m a bit confused,” Liam watched as Tatum’s eyes widened. “You see, this is a personal trip to Los Angeles, and I’m wondering why is the First Daughter here?”
The door to the black SUV suddenly opened and two brunettes stepped out. One was wearing a red turtleneck, black dress slacks with a diamond-encrusted headband, and the other a white dress shirt with a navy blue pencil skirt.
“Your Highness, my name is Kennedy Monroe-”
“Yes, I know you,” Liam stepped forward to shake her hand. “What brings you to Los Angeles?” He turned to the other woman that stood next to Kennedy.
“Prince Liam, this is Dionne, Princess of Pavadena,” Kennedy gestured to her companion next to her.
“Your Highness, it’s a pleasure to meet you in person,” Dionne curtsied and smiled up at Liam.
“Pleasure to meet you as well, Princess,” Liam took her hand and placed a soft kiss on her knuckles. “I believe my father spoke with yours last week about an alliance.”
Drake and Maxwell’s eyes widened in surprise; Liam had never spoken about a possible partnership with Pavadena.
“Yes, he sent me to meet you and to make sure that we have a deal,” Dionne’s eyes roved over Liam; she took in his broad shoulders, flat stomach, and very tall stature. “It is very important to all of us, especially our country.”
Liam stiffened. He had no idea the King and Queen of Pavadena would blindside him and send their daughter to confirm the contract. “I believe my father approved of the match,” he said carefully. “I will see you at my social season.”
Bastien stepped in. “If you’ll excuse us, Your Highness, but we have an appointment we can’t miss.” He bowed his head quickly to the princess and said his goodbyes to Kennedy and Tatum.
While Drake and Maxwell made their way to the other black SUV, Liam stayed behind and smiled down at Dionne. “It was nice to finally meet you, Princess.”
She smiled wide. “Please call me Dionne, Your Highness.”
Liam nodded. “Please call me Liam.”
“I’ll see you next week,” she curtsied and watched as Liam kissed her hand again.
“Have a safe trip.”
The two separated and got into their vehicles.
Maxwell bounced in the back seat of the SUV. “Li, why didn’t you tell us you were maybe doing another alliance?”
Liam sighed as he stared out of his window. He was trying to delay speaking about this alliance, especially with his father, because he didn’t want to forget about Ella. Liam had no idea that Pavadena would track him down and find him while he was out of the country. He figured this was his father’s doing, and his orders were relayed to Bastien; he knew Drake and Maxwell would never do this. “It’s not a maybe,” he turned to look at his friends. “I'm going to pick her as my bride after the social season.”
