(yeah, it’s reverse!robins)
Damian: “Richard. As you are getting older, there is something we need to discuss.”
Dick, age 15: “Uhhh, if this is The Talk, I already got it.”
Damian: “…It’s not, but that’s good to know.”
Damian: “No, you are rapidly approaching the age where most of us graduated from our childhood mantles and set out to forge our own independent identities. No one will take your current mantle away, of course, but it is likely people will expect you to be brainstorming where you want to go next in your life. If you have any plans, costume ideas, or names in mind. That sort of thing.”
Damian: “Any of us would be happy to help you workshop future identities if you would like to. I just need you to promise me one thing.”
Dick, leaning forwards in his chair: “What is it?”
Damian, with a haunted look in his eyes: “If Timothy says he has name suggestions, light them on fire and run.”

Y'all got me hooked on this au
It's Reverse Robins, Y'all!
Tumblr media
Damian and Tim. I figure Dami was dropped off at Wayne Manor at around 8 / 9 and had some time to adjust before Bruce adopted Tim. Turns out Dami is the beat big bro???
Shadow and Nighthawk
EDIT: changed the hue of the colors so it's not as saturated (I'm sorry if that's not what it's called the only color theory I know is children's hospital)

I assume Jason just enjoys watching other people's family drama. He's like her hype man
It's nice to be reminded every so often that your life could be worse you could have slade Wilson as a dad it humbles Jason slightly

I finally fucking got to reading some Duke comics and now I’ve gotta talk about reverse robins because where tf do I fit him in with how I’m structuring my AU
now I am a firm believer in swapping order but keeping their backstories the same with the only things changing being the things that make sure there is a new Robin (so like Dick going to Blud, Jason dying, Tim getting benched/quitting etc but w their counterparts)
this makes Duke difficult though, since he doesn’t fit into the usual Batkids formula (which I love and find to be such a breath of fresh air but makes fitting him in so difficult 😭😭)
but after thinking on it if I were to choose a character to pair him with it’d be Tim so please hear me out:
- Tim and Duke both are very intelligent, figuring out secret identities of the Bats (Tim: Bruce and Dick, Duke: Damian and Alfred).
- their parental situations
- the reasons they became vigilantes not being because Bruce picked them (ok, Duke kinda debatable because Alfred but shh)
- Dick and Tim’s swapped with Damian and Duke would be better than Damian and Jason if you look at their interactions
based on these things their stories are swappable, though it still doesn’t entirely work with how I want to do the others. mostly because I can’t move We Are Robin and make it make sense. as I’ve said I for the most part want their stories to be kept and giving We Are Robin away just makes me itch
the other reason I’m hesitant to do so is bc it would require me to find someone else to pair up with Jason and that that is basically impossible 🧍
anyways if anyone has suggestions please let me know, I’ve been reading RR posts and very little even have Duke so I’m out of inspo

do you have any good reverse robins fic to rec?
oh hell yeah!
Reverse Robins: Joker Junior series by miyaji_08 i rec’d the second fic in this series over here for the timkon of it all, but the series—two parts, both complete—is also one of my absolute favorite reverse robins stories. it goes the joker junior!tim route, so heads up for A Lot of tim-centric trauma, but gives tim (and everyone else) so much healing, too. it also gets creative with the robin of it all, as in, the call sign for batman’s partner is different from the jump because dick wasn’t around to originate “robin” for it, which i always think is a fun extra detail. the batfam characters are great and the young justice crew is also great, so read for top-tier hurt and comfort and great characters and satisfying plot and tim and damian competing to see who is the most Tired big brother of the bunch.
blood of the covenant by envysparkler robins are angsty in any order, but man does this hit the angst sweet spot, which in turn makes the soft parts feel even softer. i genuinely can’t decide what my favorite dynamic is in this AU, between damian & tim (damian wracked with guilt, tim hurting and still wanting an older brother even if he’d never admit it) and tim & jason (no spoilers but chapter 4 especially lights my brain up like a supernova) and tim & dick (i think about the part where dick grayson [tiny, cheerful] uses tim [undead, annoyed] as a jungle gym like once a week).
Wing Beats in Reverse by firefright a longfic where jason gets kidnapped by the mysterious red hood, who turns out to be jason’s not-so-dead predecessor. the jason pov here is great, and i was so compelled by how this AU explored his place in the bat family, and how it managed the emotional fallout from the kidnapping. tim is also so interesting in this—it does something i love in a reverse robins concept, which is make tim’s motivations (and lazarus pit effects) less about anger/hurt/revenge and more about ice cold logic, about being the villain so the bats don’t have to/whether they want him to or not. plus some league of assassins trauma as a cherry on top. also, kon gets to show up for a bit. (as a fair warning—and spoilers ahead—the fic has a somewhat hopeful ending for tim, but doesn’t reach full reconciliation in the scope of the plot.)
i woke up so worried that the angels let go by circees a short but potent batkids age reversal au that’s also a grisha au, starring duke as the coveted sun summoner that damian is trying to deliver to safety without mentally adopting a new brother (damian fails on the second part). even with my limited memory of grisha lore i could tell a lot of thought was put into this au, and i have a feeling it would be even better if you are able to catch all the details. i also love that even in a fantasy world where some of the bat family have magical abilities, duke is still extra special—a great analogy to being a metahuman among the bats.
The 90s Are Back! by RedWritingHood saving the two silly ones for last to lighten the mood! in this one, red hood!tim gets de-aged to sixteen and meets all his new siblings. it’s like .01% angst and 99.99% shenanigans, and pretty much all the dialogue is super quotable but Dick holds out his hands like he's calming a bunch of wild animals. "Okay, I know everyone's real upsetti spaghetti right now, but I think we all just need to calm down." might take the cake.
Clowns Don’t Kill People by mademoisellePlume very short, very silly reverse robins brother shenanigans, in which tiny dick grayson isn’t scared of recovering joker junior!tim because dick, having been raised in the circus, doesn’t associate clowns with evil yet. the fic is fun (and a great palate cleanser if you need a break from the angst above), and the author’s note at the end made me fully laugh out loud.

One of the things that I would most want to explore if I ever get around to writing a Reverse Robins and/or Reverse Batkids AU is how much Bruce has changed over time. Dick era Bruce who makes puns and comes up with silly names just to get his kid to giggle would be matched up with Duke and/or Damian, Jason era Bruce who was maximum doting father would be matched up with Tim and Steph and/or Cass. Tim/Steph era Bruce who was grieving and violent and trying to be more urban legend than man would be paired up with Jason and/or Cass. Modern era Bruce who is so serious and emotionally constipated but trying his hardest and has lost so much and gained so much and honestly seems kinda lost would be paired up with Dick and/or Duke (this doesn’t really take into account all of modern/Damian/Duke era since that Bruce has been all over the place, so I’m going with my read of him in the most current comics).
Anyway, I think about this a lot. As well as how, given the different circumstances, each kid would join the Batfamily and how they would transition from out of Batman’s shadow.
For the record even though no one asked, Reverse Robins order is Damian, Barbara, Tim, Stephanie, Tim, Cassandra, Jason, Dick, Duke. Reverse Batkids order is Duke, Damian, Cassandra, Tim, Stephanie, Tim, Jason, Barbara, Dick. Whether it’s Tim, Stephanie, Tim or just Tim, Stephanie, next person depends on how hard I want to push my Red Hood Stephanie Agenda.

Damian slipping a dagger into Steph’s coffin as a funerary gift, because he would never risk sending his sister into the afterlife unarmed.
Steph waking up in her dress in her grave without even a belt buckle to her name, but feeling that hilt digging into her hip. Steph using the dagger to dig her way out.
Talia coming to retrieve Steph off the streets, and Steph still has that dagger. Steph pulling it on Talia on pure instinct.
Talia confirming Steph’s identity by Steph’s stance & grip—exactly the way Damian taught her (exactly the way he learned from his mother.)
Steph recognizing Damian’s features in Talia, and lowering the knife in confusion. Talia taking Steph by the wrist and leading her into the vehicle that will take them out of Gotham until Steph makes her grand return.

I think the difficulty of a Reverse Robins AU for me is that I expect a bunch of things to be true that aren't always. and I do have a lot of leeway because it's more a vibes thing! but it makes it difficult to plan one even in my head. it's like
ages have to be reversed, obv. this is really difficult for Helena since she's simultaneously the second oldest and the youngest. also an issue since I go in introduction order, not in-text age.
adoption order also has to be strictly reversed. this includes other items like Tim becoming Robin, Jason coming back to life, Dick getting formally adopted, etc.; everything has to be switched
their backstory, including tragedies that left them orphaned, abandoned, etc. has to remain attached to the character as in the original story. BUT
their narrative, including their method of adoption, has to follow whichever character they're replacing, which does require a bit of fiddling to stick the pieces together
it also means that whoever gets adopted after Damian (or Mattie, if you're including him) has to wait a LONG time if you're following the timeline strictly
which is why you could like. reverse the vibes? but then you have to really piece apart what each character's vibes are doing as they get added to the family and that's extremely thematically complex. and you can only do one or the other
which batkids are you including anyway

I think the thing that really annoys me about reverse robins is how they always do it out of order. like, it should be Duke, Damian, Cass, Steph, then Tim, then jason and dick. but everyone always leaves Duke out so they can have tim as the second brother so he's the red hood.
Tbf a lot of people don't seem to know the normal order that the batkids go in so I'm not too shocked that they can't do the reverse order that being that cass is there before Jason comes back from the dead and especially before Damian is added

Reverse Robins:
Bruce meets up with the League of Assassins first thing on his world tour. He considers joining them permanently because he begins a relationship with Talia but ultimately breaks away because of the murder thing. He continues on his travels to see if he can save his city without killing then returns to Gotham as Batman.
A few years into Batmanning, Talia finds him and brings him the eight year old Damian who she wants to protect from Ra’s. Damian has already begun his training as an assassin and takes it upon himself to shadow his father wherever he goes, to try and protect him. Initially, this is without Bruce’s consent but he ultimately gives in and starts training Damian as well. Damian becomes known as the Shadow and wears a red, gray, and black uniform with a bat symbol. As a kid, he wears a domino mask but later he wears a daredevil style helmet/cowl. The media often calls him Shadowbat, much to his chagrin.
Janet Drake is the mayor and during her re-election campaign she and her husband are murdered by the Riddler. This leaves the orphaned Tim Drake without anywhere to go. Bruce attends the funeral in hopes of catching the Riddler in the crowd and sees himself in the boy as well as being overwhelmed by the guilt that he couldn’t prevent the murders of his parents. He decides to take Tim in which is a smoother process because Bruce is older and already known as a single dad. Plus the city governance don’t want to put him in an orphanage because that would make them look bad. Damian isn’t very happy with this development especially after Tim figures out their secret identities. He moves out of the house in protest when Tim insists on  becoming Batkid.
Damian later realizes how selfish he is being when Tim is captured by the Joker. He returns to help his father search for him and discover that Tim has been turned into Joker Junior. Tim is rescued but takes over a year before he feels like himself while Damian patrols with Bruce again. Tim ultimately decides to stay out of the field and becomes the man in the chair, Night Owl.
Steph becomes the first batgirl alongside Tim. She goes down more of Barbara’s path where Bruce is not a complete dick to her. She and Tim have an off and on again relationship through the years but Bruce considers her firmly part of the family. She’s also the one in the field while Tim has become fairly agoraphobic and rarely leaves the house. Damian is not her biggest fan but she grows on him.
Jason is basically the same but Damian is more accepting of him and Bruce has already learned about driving a son away and letting one out into the field too early. He trains Jason extensively to become Batkid and helps him channel more of his energy into charity work. Jason does not die but when he gets older, he moves out and becomes Night Hawk and he and Tim do their own adjacent Birds of Prey thing.
Cass is sent to kill Bruce but when she sneaks into the house and finds out what a good dad he is, she decides to stay with him instead. This causes a freak out in the morning when they find her. But they get a semblance of her backstory out of her and Bruce decides to keep her. Damian somewhat approves of this because at least she’s good at fighting. She becomes known as Black Bat.
Damian finds Dick when he takes Jason and Cass to the circus and watches the deaths of the Graysons. He comforts the boy at the scene and then petitions Bruce to adopt him later. Bruce thinks this is pretty funny because of how much Damian has mocked him for his adoption tendencies over the years. While they are getting the paper work in order, Bruce and Damian run into Dick as Robin trying to track down and kill Tony Zucco. Bruce thinks this is even funnier because Dick reminds him so much of angry baby Damian. They adopt Dick and Damian is put in charge of training him. Damian unabashedly states Dick is his favorite sibling.

Okay, so
I wrote a scene of my fanfic and I really liked it AND I'd like to translate it to English properly but my English is not the best, so I'll just describe the situation in it:
It's a Reverse Robins AU but for this scene it doesn't really matter, considering the fact that after all things that changed, including different roles for every batkid in the family, Jason still died. Because I just want some immortal!Jason (i mean the thing where he is very much able to die but he wakes up some time after) appreciation, okay? I mean, there are some things in comics that KINDA prove that (mostly the thing at the end of the Under The Red Hood arc, I'm pretty sure many people saw that theory). And, well. Things go the same as canon went once (annual #25 of Batman and some parts about Talia taking care of Jason in the Red Hood: The Lost Days) until after the Lazarus Pit.
You know how Ra's got reeeaaaally upset after That Thing with the Lazarus Pit? He didn't kill her but boy he was really intimidating. Probably because he was fresh out of the Pit.
Soon after he sends people after Jason Todd. And in my AU days later he has to deal with some urgent League business far away himself, suspecting that Talia set this up to let Jason escape the League assasins. Is he right? Is he wrong? Who knows.
Anyways,
We know that Jason was in some motel and got the news that Joker is still alive and as always goes in and out of Arkham like he owns the place. And we also know that in Lost Days after that he leaves all the trackers Talia put on him behind and runs away, trying to get to Gotham (and kill Bruce with that bomb under the Batmobile).
The thing is, in my AU he doesn't get far away before the League men catch him and bring him back to the League. Oops.
Ra's still isn't there but Talia knows that it won't take too long and she fears that as soon as Ra's gets the news of Jason being caught he'll order to eliminate him. You know, because of the stuff he told Talia about Jason being havoc or desease or something. You probably remember better than me, if you read the Lost Days.
But again, that's not the point.
The point is, that Talia (in my AU) for certain reasons actually suspects Jason being able to ressurect again. There is only one way to find out - to kill Jason. It would also keep her father's interest long enough to set Jason free once she's ready.
Jason, by the way, trusts her, even though he shouldn't and even though he doesn't remember most of the time being... unwell before the Pit.
So he doesn't expect her poisoning him with a f TEA.
The scene I wrote and can't translate good enough is about what happened right after, where Jason wakes up (and i really forgot here that i wanted to make him universal glitch again so he would wake up always after 6 months BUT I WANTED THIS SCENE TO HAPPEN SO BADLY), trying to pull himself together, and after an hourS long brooding and existential crisis he finally walks to the room next to this one (which is some sort of morgue or the infirmary, he isn't sure) just to see Talia, calm as ever, slitting there, cleaning her blade, relaxed, and he should be furious, but she just says, still looking at the blade, "Regrets are for fools". And you know, I did some decent Talia description in this dialogue but it's all in Russian and I'm a little sad.
But the thing is, Jason, knowing her, realises that she's lying to herself - and he answers after a minute of sudden muteness that if she wasn't sorry she wouldn't say something like that in the place where no soul would accuse her of anything.
And - her shoulders drop a little and she, like, relaxes. And THEN he realises that oh shit, it was her twisted and stupid way to say Sorry. And he knows he should be angry, because she poisoned him, killed him, and now she's sorry?? But he doesn't get angry, he is a little amused by this little exchange and bone-tired, but he's not angry even a little.
After that there are few more kinda cool things i wrote in Russian and then he tries to get warm and kinda just wants to rest and to look as empty as he feels and to curl in the corner under some blanket, so Talia delicately leaves the room and lets him grieve himself.
And the last line of the scene is Jason remembering what she said him once, long time ago,
"Don't show your own weakness and always aim for your enemy's one." Врушка.
Врушка basically means "little liar" and can be used as affectionate word.
So. I don't know why but i just wanted to write it. Still wish I had some person who could help me translate things in the cool way. But whatever.

What's the mix it up au? Now I'm super curious
SO. While I was writing the Reverse Robins 1.0, I joked that I should make an AU where, instead of the Batkids being in canon order or reverse order, I should just stick everyone's names into a random selection wheel, and whatever order names came out of would be the order of Bruce adopting them. Immediately after making this joke I went "wait, I should actually do that", and so I did. And then I promptly forgot about the names I had pulled for a few months until I was cleaning out my notes in the notes app to construct my WIP folder and I found the names again. So now I'm outlining it, because I think this au is very fun, and even if I never actually write any prose for it I enjoy outlining plots and making timelines for the AU
