The Barbie movie really said. Yes you will grow up and childhood wonder will vanish. Yes you will grow up and learn to hate yourself, your body, your awkwardness. Yes you will grow up and lose your confidence and certainty and sense of purpose. Yes you will grow up and the world will seem a bleaker, lonelier place every day, and society will seem bleaker and lonelier every day, and you won’t understand what went wrong in the span of just a few years, what took you from a happy and secure young girl to a sad, uncertain, scared grown woman.
And yet. You will learn to find beauty again. You will find joy in not having a purpose, in building a purpose for yourself. You will find beauty in connection, with the people and the world around you. You will learn to love signs of ageing as proof of a life well lived, of experience and happiness. You will take that little girl by the hand and tell her “I know, this isn’t what you thought it would be, but it’s real. Let me show you how beautiful it can be.”

I'm really not a villain enjoyer. I love anti-heroes and anti-villains. But I can't see fictional evil separate from real evil. As in not that enjoying dark fiction means you condone it, but that all fiction holds up some kind of mirror to the world as it is. Killing innocent people doesn't make you an iconic lesbian girlboss it just makes you part of the mundane and stultifying black rot of the universe.
"But characters struggling with honour and goodness and the egoism of being good are so boring." Cool well some of us actually struggle with that stuff on the daily because being a good person is complicated and harder than being an edgelord.
Sure you can use fiction to explore the darkness of human nature and learn empathy, but the world doesn't actually suffer from a deficit of empathy for powerful and privileged people who do heinous stuff. You could literally kill a thousand babies in broad daylight and they'll find a way to blame your childhood trauma for it as long as you're white, cisgender, abled and attractive, and you'll be their poor little meow meow by the end of the week. Don't act like you're advocating for Quasimodo when you're just making Elon Musk hot, smart and gay.

I think it’s very funny to see posts like “idk where people get the idea that disco elysium is leftist/supports communism cause the game is very critical of it and you in that plotline”
Like lol welcome to your first day as a leftist

I wish critique of colonialism and feudalism in westeros was more welcome in the asoiaf fandom, considering the books are literally critiques of medieval and fictional politics. Like some people embody feudalistic lords a little too much when they see a critique of the most powerful ruling house in this fictional world and say “well so and so house did it too so shut up!!!” Like the inner medieval tyrant is showing. You are not a dragon you are a 20 year old from the United States of America. Quit dismissing every political analysis of a political book bc “so and so did it too”. You’re so boring.

Putting the current angst aside for a second, I find it telling how the two major critiques to the game are that the characters are too nice to MC and that the ROs are too feminine (because they are nice. Because men aren't nice and don't say "dear" or "darling")
... I don't know

I genuinely think a lot of outrage over whether/how things are being covered by the news would be solved by Tumblr users actually regularly engaging with major news sources.
I recently saw a post with someone expressing outrage about how the Washington Post "broke" the news about Biden signing the aid package to Israel and that they had to search so much to find the information, as though there hasn't been literally months of coverage from every major news site that covers politics about the machinations to get Israel and Ukraine funding through Congress.
I see people saying that nobody covers what Israel is doing in Gaza--as though that hasn't been a major topic in the news for months. I see people talking about how nobody covers what's happening in Yemen, Sudan, Haiti, etc. as though, again, that requires more than literally googling things like "Yemen New York Times" to find a wide breadth of coverage that spans years.
Critiques of news coverage are absolutely fair and valid--but when you start them by saying that "nobody is talking about this" all it shows is that you aren't bothering to look.

Truly you can’t simultaneously say “this queer media is important and meaningful in real life” and then simultaneously say that anyone critiquing it for its handling of certain subjects and the messages that sends is just applying morality to media where it doesn’t belong
It can not both be a moral win and free from analysis of those morals

one of the wild things about people’s stubborn insistence on misunderstanding The Ones Who Walk Away From Omelas is that the narrator anticipates an audience that won’t engage with the text, just in the opposite direction. Throughout the story are little asides asking what the reader is willing to believe in. Can you believe in a utopia? What if I told you this? What about this? Can you believe in the festivals? The towers by the sea? Can we believe that they have no king? Can we believe that they are joyful? Does your utopia have technology, luxury, sex, temples, drugs? The story is consulting you as it’s being told, framed as a dialogue. It literally asks you directly: do you only believe joy is possible with suffering? And, implicitly, why?
the question isn’t just “what would you personally do about the kid.” It isn’t just an intricate trolley problem. It’s an interrogation of the limits of imagination. How do we make suffering compulsory? Why? What futures (or pasts) are we capable of imagining? How do we rationalize suffering as necessary? And so on. In all of the conversations I’ve seen or had about this story, no one has mentioned the fact that it’s actively breaking the fourth wall. The narrator is building a world in front of your eyes and challenging you to participate. “I would free the kid” and then what? What does the Omelas you’ve constructed look like, and why? And what does that say about the worlds you’re building in real life?

Never read Worm, but should I read Worm? Its concept n characters intrigues me greatly and I enjoy your posts but the fact that even the fans hate it is making me hesitate lol
the fans don't hate it they hate the author, who is some cunt on the forums with bad opinions on his own writing. the book is excellent and we like it very much or we wouldn't still be posting about it ten years later. go read it

Does anybody want to tell the people still complaining that 13's era didn't have enough political commentary that the anti-imperialism themes, the condemnation of the treatment of refugees and immigrants, the emphasis on violence for violence's sake being bad but violence in the name of protection and self defence is acceptable and heroic (you can and Should fight back against violent colonizers), and and absolute refusal to give any ground to abusers (something the other eras were sketchy at Best over), we could talk about the environmental protection themes that appear about as subtly as a brick more than once (ideally environmental protection shouldn't be a political issue, but idk if you've watched the news lately, it is) were like. Really thematically obvious? And that if you talk about the Less obvious, it gets deeper.
We could talk about medical exploitation and the parallels of the timeless child to henrietta lacks (look her up). We could talk about the northern working class emphasis in the whole era and that its avoidance of the south is a statement in itself, from Sheffield steel to nobody having an upper class accent (sans that one time lord who ran division who had the Snootiest of snooty high class accents. Almost like they were making a Point). We could talk about how all our characters and reoccurring are working class, a bus driver, a trainee mechanic, a hotel manager etc etc, we could talk about the portrayal of actual honest modern poverty, and that it's explicitly shown that Dan Wants to work and is threatened off of the premises instead as the indictment of capitalism it is. We could talk about the very clear condemnation of tech companies taking advantage of their customers (calling fake google Vor was unacceptable tho, no defence available).
I could go on, but I'd like to drink my tea before it gets cold.
Sorry 13 didn't say the words eat the rich, but idk if you noticed, there was an actual whole episode where in the future the 1% who ruin the earth beyond repair literally get hunted and eaten by the mutated remains of the 99% whom they left to die 👍
