Disclaimer: my opinion

Taurus placements can get really caught up in unhealthy habits or just may find it very hard to break out of patterns in general. They’re super stubborn and life usually has to teach them interesting lessons for them to acknowledge that they’re on the wrong path.

Neptune on the rising or conjuct can give a very ungrounded “leaf in the wind” kind of vibe to a person, or ethereal if it is actualised lol

Why I think Undertaker has to be Cedric, revisited

At this point in the series, I'm a bit surprised how many in the fandom not just don't see him as Cedric K. Ros-- but actually rail against the idea.

So, here's a long, somewhat thorough overview of the situational and physical clues that he's Cedric, the father of Vincent and Francis/Frances.

Situational hints

How he cries over the details of Vincent's death. Not just that he died but what became of his remains. I'd cry over my dead son, too, especially if I had the ability to reanimate corpses but his body was destroyed by fire so that I couldn't do that. Let alone the fact his cinematic records were destroyed, so I not only couldn't make a bizarre doll of him, but I couldn't even review his memories to see what happened right before he died. This ties in with what he later says about not wanting to lose any more Phantomhives. But it strongly suggests that whoever set the fire did so specifically to thwart the efforts of a grim reaper. Whoever did that either knew Undertaker was a reaper or was at least following the instructions of someone who knew.

The whole not wanting to lose more Phantomhives thing. Claudia/Cloudia is gone, and so is Vincent. Reanimating real Ciel is the best he can do to not let the older twin go. He tried to destroy Sebastian to release our earl "Ciel" from their demon contract and might try again. Makes you wonder just how many Phantomhives he's really lost already. As well as where others might still be alive. What exactly was his business in France? 🤔

Even his odd comment to our earl (before the attack) that he wasn't sure which twin this was... but that it didn't matter because they were both Phantomhives. Instead of seeing an heir and a spare, he saw them equally. At least he did then. I suspect he now sees our earl as a spare soul... or conversely sees real Ciel as a spare body. I guess both could be true, making them still essentially equal in his eyes. Again, this could be another attempt to save our earl from Sebastian. By putting our earl's soul into the unmarked body of real Ciel, that might void the contract... unless the seal on our earl's eye also somehow affected his soul. 🤔 Anyway. I digress, since that gets into a separate theory discussion.

Standing in to help young Mr. Pitt take a photo of the twins. That's right after telling our earl it doesn't matter which twin he is. Then the other twin and Mr. Pitt arrive, the latter holding a new camera. It's odd that Mr. Pitt would ask a non-relative of the kids (besides a nanny) to help stage the photo, though Pitt is perhaps the non-traditionalist anyway. Undertaker seems like he's shocked to be asked, but he also seems amused. Mr. Pitt likely doesn't even suspect Undertaker is the twins' paternal grandfather, otherwise he might have seen it as a scoop, á la "LOWLY UNDERTAKER IS SIRE TO PROMINENT NOBLE FAMILY" or something equally scandalous. Because undertakers were considered low class citizens. So, Undertaker acts shocked but complies with giddy delight. By asking Undertaker to help stage the photo, he has likely, unwittingly asked a relative of the boys, which would be considered completely appropriate for the time period.

How he treats the Midfords. He recognizes Lizzie's talents and skill with a sword, otherwise he wouldn't have wanted her at Sphere Music Hall as a protector of the lords of the stars, while he kept them and Blavat hidden away. So he probably had Blavat bring her into the cult. Undertaker might see some of himself in Lizzie, but he definitely sees it in Frances/Francis, and I don't just mean physically. Both women fight in a similar manner as he does: highly skillful and graceful. Idk what he thinks of Edward, but I know he got a great laugh from watching the Phantom Five (including Edward) perform onstage. He doesn't interact much, if at all, with Alexis, who isn't a Phantomhive.

What he says to Francis/Frances, as well as how she responds. Again, he hardly acknowledges Alexis' existence, but Undertaker speaks directly with "Lady Phantomhive". That's really important because she's married into the Midford family and hasn't gone by her maiden name in many years. As long as Edward is old plus at least a bit longer, since she strikes me as too proper for a shotgun wedding, even if she weren't a noble. So, he sets her apart from her husband because she was born a Phantomhive. He doesn't want to lose her, either, because she is her mother's daughter. Then, when she nervously states he hasn't changed in roughly four years, he pokes fun at the fact he hasn't changed in a much longer time frame. He says her birth, over 30 years ago, seems like just yesterday. She's sweating bullets, and it's not just his creepy vibes. She knows he means it -- that 30-some-odd years is nothing to him... and that he very specifically recalls her birth. I'm pretty sure she knows he's her father, and she's horribly embarrassed by the fact. Alexis doesn't have a clue about it, and she'd rather keep it that way. But what he says strongly implies that he was present at her birth. Maybe down the hall, like Vincent was when his sons were born, but there... and just as anxious and excited and proud.

How the years for Cedric's birth and death dates are hidden by a speech bubble. Cloudia/Claudia's dates are fully shown because she's a regular human being. Well... a human, anyway. But if Undertaker is Cedric, then the birth and death dates for him would be from when he was a human, before he committed suicide and was sentenced to serve out his punishment as a reaper. That death date could be decades or even centuries before Cloudia/Claudia was even born. Remember that this family tree isn't one prepared by humans; it's part of the dossier that the German reapers have for our earl. The focus is purely biological ancestry, not marriages. Cloudia/Claudia and Cedric don't have to be married to be on this family tree; he is biologically the father of both Vincent and Francis/Frances.

Physical hints

He looks a lot like Francis/Frances and Edward. And Yana-san tweeted years ago that Francis and Edward look like Cedric. Here's a comparison between Edward and Undertaker. Here's one between Francis/Frances and Undertaker.

The place on his right where his hair has a long braid seems to match up with Lizzie's and Francis/Frances' right side locks that tend to stick out. He's got it tucked behind his right ear, but the braid might originate from the same spot. If Lizzie and her mother pushed those locks back, behind their right ears, the placement would be the same as Undertaker's braid.

He has the exact same baby hairs at the nape of his neck as Lizzie and Francis/Frances. They might be a bit shorter, but they are definitely there. Here's an old post about it. Edward possibly does, too, and we could tell if his hair was grown out and pulled up, but his hair is short and a bit shaggy on the nape of his neck, so we can't be sure.

What if...

I finally watched Bullet Train despite my immense disliking of Brad Pitt and safe to say I absolutely loved the movie. Lemon and Tangerine absolutely stole the show with their Thomas the Tank Train Engine related bickering. I was also watching John Wick and thought:

What if Bullet Train and the John Wick series was in the same universe? What if John Wick was on the actual bullet train?

Everyone would probably be dead, and MAYBE he would have seen straight through the Prince's manipulations on the train.

I can just imagine how the interactions between the twins and John would go with him being confused as to why Lemon keeps classifying people as trains.

I see him getting along with Ladybug with the man's attempts to be a pacifist, but ultimately fails by killing people on 'accident'. I saw a post and I think it's because he is extremely well trained and experienced that he was sort of giving them a 'do you really want to fight me?' but that is another talk for another time.

I am sure that the Elder and John would get along very well, the Elder would more than likely give John the best advice. That would extend to Yuichi who did everything to protect his son Wataru while being blackmailed while John would do anything for his dog (and preserving Helen's memory)

Risking It - BarclayPierce ( Andy x Nica)

Warnings: Nica showing Andy how much she loves his body. No explicit smut, but it's Implied that he has a praise kink.

Summary: When it comes to clothes, Andy has allways been a comfort prioritizer, but constantly playing it safe also means never taking risks. A smirk from Nica while hearing the mere suggestion of encouraging him to try crop tops is enough for him to accept taking the challenge.

Notes: Since we have been talking about the fatphobia in the show, this is my small contribution for some positivity :)

The idea would have never occured to him before, but it had a source of inspiration he couldn't ignore. Used to being teased about his dressing style by the kids, he finally asked the twins what was wrong with it and the ultimate verdict was lack of risks. That didn't worry him much, since he was a comfort prioritizer, but he still let them ramble some ideas describing their definition of risk. Nica was having fun observing the horror some of the suggestions caused him, at least untill one got her interest.

She was smirking when crop tops were mentioned and that didn't go unnoticed.

" You have to be kidding, nobody wants to see that. " He mocked himself while showing awareness to her. " It's not my thing, and it would look ridículous … Who do you think I am? Brad Pitt in Fight Club? Not with these. "

He pointed at the rolls on his stomach.

" And who told you abs are a requirement to wear one? " She sweetly teased him ríght away. " I do think it would look great on you. "

"Challenging your insecurities is good. It's clear you cling to the baggy shirts to distract from the tummy the same way dad does with the platforms and heels because he hates being short. " Glenda commented, then shared a complicit glance with Nica because she was the source of the rumour about Chucky they were reproducing. " Dressing a fat body shouldn't have to be about hidding it all the time, Andy. "

It was very kind of them, but he wasn't convinced.

" I get it, but i'm not going to get from zero to one hundred in one move."

" It would look cute! And I can help you find one that fits your style. " Glen encouraged him. " The important thing is that you try the risk and see how you feel about it."

" But it's always on you. " Nica concluded, cutting them off to point out an important detail. " Remember not to push yourself just because we think it can be fun. Chucky took many uncomfortable risks with my looks and i don't feel like being that fun anymore, so a safe wardrove is another thing we have in common. "

Andy smiled and approached to give her a peck on the lips.

" You look lovely in anything you choose to wear. " He praised her afterwards. " I'm pretty sure you are going to regret the curiosity. "

Nica was giving him a mischievously skeptical glance while replying.

" I don't think so, confidence is your best fit … very sexy of you. "

That comment was the final temptation convincing him of trying it. He didn't admit it then, but secretly started to consider it. Glen had shared him some adresses of online stores with trustable sizing and good stuff where Andy began eyeing untill finding one he could at least imagine himself trying. The too tíght and colorfull ones were too much, he also saw a few made of fishnet that he sincerely couldn't imagine anyone wearing comfortably besides, peraphs, an 80's rockstar. There were some more bassic ones, black or white, with pop culture or classic rock prints he felt more inclined towards. Between those he stumbled with the black one he ended up choosing pretty much for the print.

The first try on happened a day when the kids weren't arround. They were always good intentioned, but but sometimes they could be little shits messing with him just for the fun of it. Lexy s honesty could get cruel despite she wouldn't even realize it, the boys could find the image funny just for the sake of the shocking change causing impact and only the twins would be cheering. He was surely doing it out of curiosity, but the only opinion he wanted to know besides from his own was Nica's.

Risking it was worthy even if it was just for her reaction. She seemed so interested, that damn provokative smirk had said it all … What could he had possibly done, but indulge her? He did feel a bit strange at first, like showing too much skin from all the wrong places, but wasn't sure about shying away on the first impression. The main trait the crop top was designed to highlight was the belly, his self perceived most troubled area, so his girlfriend's curiosity was quite a mistery to him.

She stumbled with the sight entering to the bedroom while he was evaluating his feelings about it. She wasn't seeing it coming and the first glimpse clearly offered to her was from the back, the sides of his bare love handles and his clothed ass in pants that weren't loose enough to hide his shape. Her lips parted as her eyes silently roamed his image.

It was completely unusual and exciting. Nica knew that Andy wasn't the kind of guy going cassualy shirtless while washing the car. She would normally only get to see something like that during intimate times or accidentally walking in when he had just showered. He had her used to feeling like an eighteenth century man looking at bare ankles with the accidental lift of a long skirt if his shirts would have a few open buttons exposing a bit of neck.

He was a gift for her eyes, yet her ears couldn't believe what he had to say about it.

" I think this isn't working. " Was his awkward verdict. " You can tell Glen and Glenda that I tried, but it doesn't feel good. I'm just too fat for it. "

Feeling so teased while he was venting his genuine insecurities was frustrating for her. If he could turn back and see how she was already drooling, maybe he wouldn't be overthinking.

" … Come here, big boy. " She seductively purred. " Let me see the front. "

Andy followed her hesitantly, but clearly affected by her sensual teasing tone.

Her first observation was a more neutral one, but it kept implying enjoyment of some sort.

" Back to the Future? Damn, you are such a nerd " She pointed at the print " … I love it tho, when you get nerdy. "

He smiled, but breaking eye contact to look down because the praise started to make him shy. He was weak for praising and he could vaguely tell it was just starting.

" So … What do you think? "

Nica was grabbing the arms of her wheelchair tíghtly, her eyes have never abandoned him and she didn't notice she was biting her bottom lip.

If they would be on a classic cartoon, she would be barking and howling.

" Fine, too fine. " Was all she could artículate. " Hot, so freaking hot. Thank you for your service, sir. "

He chuckled, wondering what was so sexy of seeing most of his flabby belly out.

" Is it just for the confidence or are you really into it? I can change real quick … "

" Don't!!" She cutted him off, urgence making her wheel closer. " It looks perfect … I swear, Andy, shut down those self deprecating thoughts because i can't think ríght … I'm not myself when you are in front of me in all your thick glory. "

Any rational seeming doubt jumped out from his mind to those words.

" Carefull, baby love. " He pleaded softly. " You know what this does to me and you are going to get us in trouble if the kids show up. Are you risking it? "

She was desperate for it, all over him as soon as the teasing question gave her the consent call. Her hands were grabbing his hips as her lips avidly searched for the spot of belly skin that was more accesible to her from that position in order to start planting kisses.

It was clear that the new item would not last much on despite how much she loved it.

8 shows to get to know me better

1. bbc ghosts

this is where the mat obsession started. it actually started as a ben/patcap obsession, funnily enough, but within mere weeks of being back on tumblr i had spiralled into mat insanity, never to return. for real though, this show is so good. i love it so much. i love all the characters. patcap is real and i love it. i don’t really need to say anymore about it since i think everyone who follows me here has at least SEEN ghosts.

2. spy (2011)

spy is so important to me. it gave me chris pitt-goddard. he is me, i am him. i love him more than i love life itself. one of the best mat characters to ever exist. thomas thorne could never. the rest of the show is fine, the other characters are alright (i am soft on tim though) but chris MAKES the show. the things he comes out with are iconic. plus. without chris, the iconic chris x joe ship would have never been born (which would have been an absolute TRAGEDY)

3. reluctant persuaders

because this is about shows rather than specifically television shows i am including reluctant persuaders, hit bbc radio show. it’s funny, it’s iconic, all the characters are phenomenal. even if mat wasn’t in it, i would still love it. but he is, and he plays joe starling, the soggiest wettest most pathetic mat character to ever exist. my mans is insulted by everyone every episode. they all comment on how pathetic he is all the time. how sad and lonely he is. how he looks about 10 years older than he actually is. it’s wonderful. and, of course, without joe, the iconic chris x joe ship would have never been born. tragic. but it’s ok because they’re here and i was here to coin the ship so we can all heave a sigh of relief.

4. you me and the apocalypse

okay, you might be sensing a theme here. and yes, okay, the theme is that they are all mat shows (i WILL be including at least one non-mat show though, never fear). but this one gave us two PHENOMENAL mats. the twins. THE twins. of all time. cersei and jaime were usurped by ariel and jamie (idk why iconic twins always have a jamie but it’s NOTED). this show is also just objectively brilliant. it’s not like spy where it would suck without the mat character. this show is just great.

5. the wrong mans

i can’t talk about mat shows without THIS one. because mat not only wrote and starred in this beautiful wonderful show, it’s also iconic for the soppiest wettest mat character we get to see on tv. (the only one who holds a candle here is william from quacks but.. i think sammy takes the cake). he’s a cute tiny baby and i love him dearly.

6. inside no.9

okay, so this one genuinely doesn’t count as a mat show, but mat is very beautiful in the few minutes he has in that one episode and so, here u go, mat gif. i loved this show long before i descended into mat madness, and for good reason! it’s brilliant, inspired, genuinely incredible. and watching it again with @the-20th-century-girl has been an absolute joy. looking at reece with her (and yes, okay, SOMETIMES i look at steve and his lovely legs too) is always a good time. i love almost all the episodes. anthology series are fucking fantastic but this one takes the cake. i love black mirror, but black mirror wishes it was in9.

7. ted lasso

this show is absolutely fantastic and i went absoltuely insane watching it over the space of about 5 days. i was then left with the last 4 or so episodes to watch as they came out, which was brilliant. i got to experience the end with everyone else, lol. but seriously, this show has some fantastic characters and storylines and character GROWTH. jamie tartt at the start of s1 vs jamie tartt by the end of s3 is just. INCREDIBLE. the whole nate the great arc. like holy shit this show went HARD and it paid off.

8. bbc merlin

going RIGHT back to my roots with this one. while glee got me onto tumblr and twitter back in the day, it was merlin that got me INVOLVED in fandom. i learnt to gif because of this show, i went to my first fandom event because of this show (bradley and tom’s football game), i made my first group of fandom friends because of this show. it’s still one i go back to and rewatch every now and then. sometimes i still read merthur fic when i think about a Specific Fic i remember i used to love. i will always have a special place in my heart for this show fr.

You haaaave to see the new Interview with the Vampire show, it’s SO good

see there’s so many reboots, remakes, adaptions, and such nowadays and I understand the gripe about it. so it’s kind of like hmm well this is Another remake BUT a lot of the shows I DO like fall in this vein (twin peaks got a third season 25 years after it ended, I like the hannibal television series, the what we do in the shadows series that had a movie before it became a show which same thing with buffy the vampire slayer, ash vs evil dead was a show that came 20 years after the last evil dead film with ash and a few years after the remake film featuring new characters) so like. I guess I can’t really pick at iwtv for that. I’ve only watched the film with tom cruise and brad pitt so I’m not like an invested fan yknow. but if it’s good I think I may watch it… one thing is that I can be a contrarian to popular things which I KNOW is ironic given all my interests are popular. but it’s like when there’s a current show going on and it’s all fandomy I’m like no <3 which again I know is ironic since I post about my interests and shows a lot but you get what I mean…. where’s it’s EVERYWHERE and so shippy and such… it’s complex

Gravity Falls is going out of print!

Non sai mai da quale orribile destino ti ha salvato la tua sfortuna", è una delle tante battute filosofiche sulla fortuna e il destino nell'elegante ma soddisfacente thriller "Bullet Train". Il film, diretto in modo maniacale da David Leitch ("Deadpool 2") , ha diversi personaggi, da Ladybug (Brad Pitt) al principe (Joey King), all'anziano (Hiroyuki Sanada) che parlano o parlano poeticamente di fato e fortuna, fortuna e fato.

Ci sono anche diversi personaggi, tra cui Lemon (Brian Tyree Henry), Tangerine (Aaron Taylor-Johnson) - alias "The Twins" e sì, dal nome dei frutti - che parlano di Thomas the Tank Engine. ‌only her brother knew about her anxiety and shyness. People see her so independent and talking with adults so easily that Pittsie (only her can call him that) is the first person that found out how nervous she gets trying to make new friends or before talking to a lot of people;

How do you headcanon undertaker and cloudia's relationship? you have pretty much convinced me about undertaker=cedric theory😂and if it turns out to be true it has to be the epitome of gothic romance

Idk that I have too many headcanons about their relationship, but I definitely have several ideas, many of which I have posted before. Maybe try the shipping tags at the bottom of this post to find some of those old posts?

However.

Over the years, I've come up with different approaches to their relationship, and I've changed some views regarding their personalities. I used to always see Undertaker as the goofball and Cloudia/Claudia as the no-nonsense sort. But Yana-san's old tweet about inheritance started to make me rethink things.

Now I see Cloudia/Claudia as the one full of laughter and even prankish jokes, which Vincent picks up from her... and Undertaker as once being very stoic and proper, which would have been picked up by Francis/Frances. After she dies, Undertaker adopts part of her personality, maybe as a coping mechanism. I'll get to that a bit more later.

Here are some canon-based ideas:

She's very willful, and she knows what he is and what dangers there would be to having his kids, but she's willing to take the chances. Even Vincent says, in the bonus chapter "With Father", that the Phantomhive women are strong-willed; so much so that even though he'd sometimes wished he'd had a daughter, he's kind of glad he didn't. I assume he's talking about both his sister and his mother.

She might even choose to have his kids as a big F U to the crown. Our earl says children aren't the tools of their parents, but this series shows us that's exactly how many parents in the series have been using their children. And Yana-san says everyone has a dark/evil streak, and the Phantomhives seem to have an even wider streak than most. So... Cloudia/Claudia might have wanted to have his kids, specifically his, because of their potential to... what? Take down the queen? Idk, but the various opportunities for using her own children are numerous.

But she'd also want to protect her children as much as possible, particularly while they are young, and that might include things like not advertising they are his, as well as keeping him at a slight distance from his own children. Making him seem like a visitor and friend of the family instead of their father. A bit like scenes we've had of him and the twin brothers; he acts like he's not related and doesn't want to step over familial boundaries (like in that photo scene), but he will do as Mr. Pitt says, for the sake of a good photograph. There, he's filling a role typically held by a family member or by a nanny. (I have an old post about child photography practices during the Victorian era.)

Then again, his children probably knew he was their father. Maybe not right away, but they found out, which is why Undertaker now teases "Lady Francis Phantomhive" about him recalling her birth like it was yesterday, and she's sweating. No one else in the room would know... unless Tanaka was also present. I expect Tanaka would know very well. Vincent and Francis/Frances grew up with Tanaka as their main caretaker, according to Yana-san's old tweet about dark/evil streaks. She even suggests that Tanaka must have quite the wide dark/evil streak, but then she zips-up... not wanting to spoil something about Tanaka....

What the pair were really like together is harder to say. Given my newer ideas about their personalities, she gave him something to smile and laugh about, while he tried his best to be a voice of reason and warning. That's backed up by the scenes where he's fiddling with the lockets and talking to himself about all the warnings he gave (presumably to the more recent generations of Phantomhives, at least). We've also seen him warning our earl (appropriately in ch13) about being "collared" by the queen (and that ring).

Likely, there were many times where the two of them had arguments, much like the brother and sister later, like the one shown in ch132. Vincent makes a serious statement but in a somewhat blasé fashion, prompting his sister to get angry and accuse him of always being this way.

I can imagine Undertaker giving Cloudia/Claudia a withering stare whenever she doesn't take something (like the queen/crown) seriously enough... if he's not whipping out his scythe much like Francis/Frances does her sword. Not like Undertaker would actually hurt her (just like Francis/Frances wouldn't actually hurt her brother), but it could be for show. Reminds me of ch142, when Undertaker does exactly that to show Othello he's done laughing and being deadly serious now.

After she dies, Undertaker "adopts" some of her personality, and it largely serves as a coping mechanism. Either her love of jokes completely brushed off on him... or his cinematic records have been altered! There are two ways I could see this latter case happening: 1. He was attacked by her cinematic records and they got to him, a bit like Thomas' cinematic records getting to William in the reaper OVA, or 2. It's on purpose; he managed to manipulate his own cinematic records with snippets of hers.

It could also be that he's simply craving jokes from others because she's not there anymore to provide them. Instead of "adopting" part of her personality, he might just feel like he's left with a hole to fill, and laughter fills it... but only briefly.

As far as how romantic they were with each other? I'll leave that to the cosplay and fanfic scenarios. It's fun to think about, and I've written some of those scenarios, but at this point I have no major ideas about it. Maybe he surprised her with futuristic gizmos... or whisked her away to foreign lands to soak up some sun and culture. Who knows?

But I suspect their relationship got strained, probably having to do with her role as queen's watchdog. Maybe her plans for their children in all of this. He might have decided to distance himself after a while, but then when she dies, he returns (beside himself with grief and regret) and offers to help Vincent. This would kind of parallel Cedric of Rotherwood disowning his son, Wilfred of Ivanhoe (whose mother is dead), for being loyal to King Richard... but they eventually reconcile.

I definitely think Undertaker would love to break the ties between the Phantomhive family and the crown. There's that scene in ch13, and he doesn't seem too pleased about real Ciel later saying (ch151) he will eventually have to present himself to the queen and fulfill his role as watchdog.

How To Train Your Brain To Remember Everything

Todd Sampson, an Australian TV personality, underwent a brain makeover in a six-episode series called Redesign My Brain. By the end of the first season, Todd was able to memorize and enumerate a shuffled deck of cards at the 2012 World Memory Championships in London.

“The brain is a dynamic organ”, says Psychology Today. “It can change its architecture throughout life, responding to experience by reorganizing connections — in short, by wiring and rewiring itself.”

Behind the Redesign My Brain project was Michael Merzenich, a psychologist who pioneered the fastest-growing science in the world — neuroplasticity. He wanted to prove his hypothesis that each part of our body is mapped onto its own area in the brain.

He believed that our central nervous system wasn’t as hard-wired as previously thought. He rightly guessed that there are specific exercises we can do to train our brain to excel in particular areas.

1. The Method of Loci

The method of loci (also called mind palace technique) is one of the mnemonic techniques used for developing superior memory performance. To put it simply, it’s all about associating new information with something you already know. And, in this case — places (“loci” means “places” in Latin).

Visualization is at the core of this method — the more vivid, the better. Joshua Foer, a writer who happened to win the U.S. Memory Championship, opens up about this technique in his TED Talk.

How it works:

You have to pick a location (your home, neighborhood, office floor, etc.) that you know very well, and most importantly, you have to imagine the pathway you usually take navigating through that location.

Whatever the items you need to memorize, try placing them on the checkpoints along that path. So, let’s say you’re cramming for a chemistry exam and you need to remember this equation:

Mg+HCl → MgCl2+H2

Now, imagine Mg opening the door and greeting you into your own home. You say hello and step in only to see hydrochloric acid appearing from behind the closet and taking magnesium by the hand.

The two of them take you to your living room. Suddenly, the hydrogen and chlorine from hydrochloric acid decide to go to the bathroom and come back with their twin brothers (H2 and Cl2).

They fight over magnesium, and magnesium decides to leave with the Cl twins leaving H2 twins behind. Breaking bad, right?

2. Storytelling

This technique does wonders for memorizing lists of items when you go grocery shopping, for example.

Like the previous method, it’s based on the power of visualization and association whereby something too familiar to remember is associated with something more meaningful to you. It’s also essential to make those items interact.

How it works:

Let’s say you want to go shopping for coffee, bread, wine, and cheese.

Before you walk out the door, think about a situation where Kofi Annan (the seventh Secretary-General of the United Nations) and Brad Pitt (the famous Hollywood actor) are having their photo taken under a grapevine, and the photographer says “cheese!”.

Once you step into the supermarket, the image is bound to stick in your memory.

3. Beat the Doorway Effect

Picture this all-too-common situation: you are sitting in your living room, and you suddenly remember you have to call someone. You dash for your phone that’s in the other room… but as soon as you go through the door, you no longer remember why you got up in the first place.

Walking through the doorway causes a temporary loss of memory, a study says. Because we experience a location update, our brain sets up a mental block. To stop being confused, you need to beat your mind to it.

How it works:

The moment you decide you need to go to the other room to fetch or do something, stop yourself for a second and visualize yourself in that other room, doing what you intended to go there for.

If it’s the phone call, envision yourself actually finding the phone, dialing the number, and answering.

4. Chunking

Our brains are wired for grouping things and seeing patterns, so why not use this superpower to improve memory performance?

It’s all about taking small bits of information and combining them into meaningful wholes i.e. larger units. According to the Peak Performance Center, chunking decreases the number of items you are holding in short-term memory by increasing the size of each item.

How it works:

One example of chunking is creating keywords or acronyms. Our brain can hold 7 items maximum (+/-2), so you should not go over that number for a single unit.

Say you can’t memorize the names of the Great Lakes of North America — Huron, Ontario, Michigan, Erie, Superior. Take their first letters and make an acronym “HOMES”. Simple as that! For more advanced chunking techniques, check out this resource.

5. Spaced Repetition

Spaced repetition is one of the best learning techniques that revolves around spacing out your studying intervals. It’s been discovered that “long-term memory is enhanced when learning events are spaced apart in time, rather than massed in immediate succession” (Vlach & Sandhofer 2012).

Scientists agree that we all possess a “forgetting curve”, meaning that our ability to retain the memory of something we’ve learned declines over time unless we stop at an ideal moment and review.

Depending on the complexity of the new information you’re trying to retain in your long-term memory, the moment you stop to review will vary.

How it works:

The key is to stop at the right moment and repeat what you’ve learned. This needs to be done multiple times over a period of time.

The rule of thumb is that you should make your first review the day after you started studying. After that, you can make the second one after a week, the next one after approximately two weeks and the last one after a month. (As you can see, the periods double.)

If you’re afraid you can’t decide on your own, there are apps you can use to help you out. They are based on the old-school principle of flashcard studying with sophisticated algorithms that can gauge the intervals. The most popular so far are Anki, SuperMemo, TinyCards, and EdApp.

6. Spread the word

“If you can’t explain it to a six-year-old, you don’t understand it yourself.” ― Albert Einstein

Have you ever been in a situation where you thought you’d learned something, and then, when you started explaining it to another person, it all got blurry? Well, you’re not alone.

How it works:

Once you start learning something new (studying for an exam, reading a book, etc.), make a stop after every section or a chapter and share it with someone else!

Try and explain what you’ve learned as if you’re teaching a class. In fact. It’s been suggested, “that [when] students actually teach the content of a lesson, they develop a deeper and more persistent understanding of the material than from solely preparing to teach.” (Fiorella & Mayer 2013)

If you can’t find anyone in the mood for listening, be your own audience. Stand in front of the mirror and start talking.

Takeaway Tips

While these tactics will surely increase your memory performance, you also need to take care of your brain’s wellbeing.

Get enough sleep and practice relaxation techniques as frequently as possible.

Of course, some foods will send your memorization potential skyrocketing too. Dark chocolate, blueberries, fatty fish, broccoli, and nuts should be topping your next shopping list. (Here’s a great way to start your super-brain journey: try and memorize these foods by using some of the techniques we’ve mentioned!)

Take baby steps at first, and don’t get discouraged if the methods don’t work right away. You could also combine several of them at once. For example, you can mix chunking and storytelling.

And remember, memory power is not a sign of intelligence or the lack thereof. It’s just one of the ways our minds work, and one of many you can amp up with enough practice and patience.

Coast House is a single-storey cottage overlooking the ocean received a new first floor to take advantage of spectacular coastal views.

An economical design tailors simple materials to make a comfortable home for a busy couple with young children. The pitched roof form in the living spaces on the upper floor creates a generously-proportioned series of rooms, addressing the ocean view.

A cut-out corner of the balcony serves to frame views south along the coastline, while offering privacy from the block of flats next door.

Mirrors and skylights in the living rooms bring in northern sun and amplify views in a tight floor plate, increasing the sense of space.

The form of the garage recalls seaside bathing pavilions.
