this is your reminder that using "-phobia" to talk about bigotry is ableist, and does real material harm to mentally ill people. it is part of this bigger issues where bad behaviour is blamed on mental illness. it is right up there with claiming everyone with bpd is an abuser. it is not less bad because it's widely used. ableism and oppressive language are just incredibly normalised.
"homophobia" was coined as an actual medical term to frame bigotry is a mental illness. it was described as a fear of contagion, a fear of losing conservative values, a fear based in religion. all of these aren't fear. they are bigotry. he also went on to say that phobia always leads to brutality, both demonising actual phobic people and framing bigotry as not a choice. he also called it a "gay panic". "homophobia" as a medical term is the very basis for the gay panic defense. "homophobia" as a medical term is the very reason that bigots got away with hate crimes as they could plead not guilty based on insanity.
bigotry is not a medical condition. bigotry is a choice. this demonisation of mental illness is why we are so associated with bad behaviour, seen as horrible and dangerous people, not trusted, institutionalised. continuing to use "-phobia" to mean bigotry is traumatising, triggering and harmful to all kinds of mentally ill people, but mostly phobic people. and especially queer phobic people.
every single queer space i have ever been in has been inaccessible to me due to the demonisation of my mental illness in every other sentence. the queer community has a huge ableism problem, and that people won't let go of their emotional support oppression is only the tip of the ice berg. stop using oppressive language, or live knowing you're an oppressor. this goes for fellow mentally ill people too. internalised ableism is not an excuse to be oppressive.
you can literally call it anything else. you can say transmisia (the -misia having the same root as miso- in misogyny meaning hate - much more accurate), anti-gayness, ace-antagonism, hetero/cis/mono/allosexism. there are ways of talking about oppression without being oppressive. stop making queer spaces unbearable for disabled people. stop fucking demonising us. stop treating ableism as a joke.

It feels like an ouroboros some days, wound around the innermost parts of my brain and self-devouring, squeezing, and i cannot reach what it holds in that little bubble i used to call me.
And it’s not the act of asking for help that itself is so terrifying, it’s the self-devouring. It’s the dissonance between my greatest fears and their unfeeling, unknowing peace. That I cower alone from a spectre that no one else can see.

Hi Neil,
I read all your books, but today I’d like to share my story about The Graveyard Book. It’s a bit long.
I remember that I listened to the audio book in almost pitch black in a park, before I actually read that book. It was in winter, and the park was covered in deep snow. I walked through a path between some dark and tall pine trees. There, your voice read the story in my headphones. The story began with something about “a knife in the darkness”.
I wasn’t exactly existed to the rest of the world at the time. I have development disorder (Ok I have autism but not the smart kind that most people would have imagined), I have intellectual disabilities, I was very delayed in development, and it took me years to learn the simplest things most people would learn as toddlers. I was homeschooled at times and when I actually went to school it was in an untraditional way.
Now I’m not sure what was happening when I heard/read The Grave Book for the first time, but I remember I wan’t anywhere in this world and wasn’t really doing anything. I was in between.
I love the idea about the goblins’ underground world very much. I also love the idea about befriending ghosts. I dreamt to have ghost friends. I literally dreamt about me chasing after some ghosts, hoping they can be my friends but they were too social-phobic and they always scattered away.
But most of all I love what Bod said, ‘I want to see life. I want to hold it in my hands. I want to leave a footprint on the sand of a desert island. I want to play football with people. I want…I want everything.’
This was exactly what I thought at the time. I’m disabled, I can be uncomfortable in many environments, I get tired easily, I get into troubles or difficulties very often. I can’t stand the noise, but I wish I could be in the Rock music concert and actually enjoy it without pain. People thought we don’t want them. But I want them, I want everything.
Well, I guess you know what happened next: “Between now and then, there was Life; and Bod walked into it with his eyes and his heart wide open.” I did this and I’m still doing it. I’m nearly thirty now, but I feel that my life had yet to start. I went abroad, I came NZ just as you did. I’m in a university and I haven’t graduated.
And I’d like to think that when I’m in my 60s I can do everything, just like you and my elderly friends, I’ll get a very big dog and a very tiny house, I’ll be able to play music with other people in my garden, and we dance.
You will dance.

Hypervigilance is a common symptom of many mental health disorders and social conditions. It is a physiological response of constant alertness to the threats around you and from yourself. I've had a hard time coping with this symptom in general, as it would warp all my relationships, all my perceptions of myself, others and the world. On top of all of this, I felt it was providing me safety from the actual threats I've experienced and feared experiencing; I couldn't be further from the truth. Here are a few ways you can experience hypervigilance:
You might have phobic reflexes. Every unexpected or unpredictable sensory information is perceived as a threat (a sigh, loud walking, cars or people behind you, quick movements from others, etc.). You may jump, or be extremely started and irritable. Other times, you may have extreme emotional reactions or intense dissociation. Phobic reflexes are generally responses to sensory triggers.
Your body may rarely feel relaxed. A lot of stiffness, pain and discomfort can come from keeping your body at a high stress level. At long-term, you may end up developing chronic illnesses as your body is overwhelmed with the constant arousal of fight/flight/freeze/fawn responses.
You struggle doing any task that requires your full attention or a lack of alertness to your surroundings (paperwork, sleeping, reading, etc.). Your ability to function cognitively may be affected by hypervigilance as a whole, which means you'll experience cognitive rigidity, processing disinhibition and other executive dysfunctions. (Note: these are generally partially reversible when recovering from PTSD, GAD, OCD or other disorders with hypervigilant patterns or when you are no longer in a social context which requires this level of conscience of your surroundings).
You may overanalyze what people say or what you think in order to avoid any threat. The latter is particularly common in people with OCD or with trauma around philosophical concepts. You may perceive yourself as one step away from losing control, and may expect others to lose control as well. Generally, the feeling of loss of control resides in hypervigilance itself than actually acting against your values.
You may use escapism a lot, and develop addictions, behavioral or not. This reduces the sense of being constantly threatened temporarily, but increases the hypervigilance on the long-term and worsens the issue. These are a few of the signs you experience hypervigilance as a core coping mechanism ruling your reactions to your current social context as well as the disorders you might deal with. Trauma is the common denominator of this mechanism, although PTSD and C-PTSD isn't implied by default. Since hypervigilance is your body being in constant alertness, in order to reduce it, you must reduce the physiological stress then work on the mental components of hypervigilance at the same time. I will update this blog later with a few ways you could reduce hypervigilance.

He could have stayed at the bottom of the lake long enough to survive until someone rescued him. He was designed to be tough in any situation but here... Stuck in icy water (which damages its components more quickly), the difficulty of retrieving him, the silence… It's enough to make anyone phobic

This attitude also explains why it is so difficult to have a truly stable social relationship

Words You Can't Use (According to Language Police)
System: System is a medical term that only applies to DID systems and can only be used by them. Ignore Internal Family Systems therapy, or top DID specialists referring to some voices in psychotic disorders as parts of a system. Only dissociative disorders!
Multiple: This came from the multiplicity community, and the only way to be multiple is to have a dissociative disorder. (No! Don't look at the boundary with normality in the ICD-11)
Plural: This means the same thing as multiple. Still can't use it.
Alter: A medical term that only applies to DID systems.
Headmate: Means the same thing as alter, and you can't have a headmate unless you have DID. But also, DID systems can't use this because it's not a medical term. (I've seriously seen someone attacking the Plural Association for using the word headmate instead of alter. Oh, wait. That was the same system claiming endogenic is offensive. That tracks!)
Introject: This is a medical term with a specific meaning that can only apply to DID systems. It's not like introjection is a common psychological process, and any headmate created through introjection would logically be considered an introject.
Fictive and factive: Non-traumagenic systems can't use this because it means the same thing as introject and non-traumagenic systems can't have introjects. But also, traumagenic systems can't use it because it was coined by endogenic systems.
Tulpa: You can't use this because its etymology is derived from another language, and anything with a foreign origin is apparently appropriation.
Thoughtform: This is also related to the tulpa, and you can't use it either. Try something more invalidating like "imaginary friend."
Imagian plural: Psych! Actually, we decided that if you identify your headmate as imaginary friend but call yourself plural, you're comparing alters to imaginary friends which is super ableist.
Spiritual plural: We also decided that literally every culture that ever experienced nonpathological possession states is closed, and identifying any of your headmates as being spiritual is racist. We don't know who it's racist against, but it's against someone. Trust us.
Sysmed: This uses the same suffix as transmeds, and It's actually transphobic for transgender systems to compare how a hate group has harmed them through an ideology that pathologizes all transness to how another has harmed them through an ideology that pathologizes all multiplicity. It's the same way it would be homophobic for other groups to use the "phobic" suffix. Oh... wait...
Natural: By calling something natural, you're inherently calling everyone else's experiences unnatural, which sounds bad. Why do you think disabled people are unnatural? Don't think about the fact that nature in psychology generally refers to genetics and the more common opposite in this context would be more akin to "environmental."
Endogenic: Well.... umm... you see... it sounds kind of like iatrogenic... or maybe endogenous... and endogenous is a common word used to refer to something internal... and there was some debate about whether DID was endogenous or exogenous... so that's why other groups can't use the word, and using the word makes you ableist? And... umm... Freud?
It's funny how anti-endos keep insisting that literally every word is harmful, and demand we take their assertions super seriously when they claim that all they want is for us to change the language we use.
If you still think this language discourse is legitimate and in good faith, you haven't been paying attention.
If anti-endos feel we're not taking their criticisms seriously... it's because we're not.
It's because when every term is treated as contentious, it becomes obvious that you don't care about language as much you care about using attacks on language to silence speech.
I have said for a while that the attacks on terms like "tulpa" and others aren't in good faith. That we would be attacked no matter what terms we use because anti-endos hate us for what we are, and only target our language as an excuse to spread hate against us.
I have said for a while that nothing would satisfy them.
I sincerely hope that most people watching these latest attacks play out can see the truth in this now.
The endogenic and plural community is done apologizing for our existence, and we're done apologizing for the language we use.

genuinely asking because i saw the post with you saying you arent fatphobic - if you run a pro blog that caters and creates triggering media for ppl to starve themselves, isnt that inherently fatphobic? even if you arent bullying or harassing people, isnt it just a deep rooted feeling from the disorder? theres probably fat people who ask for you to post thinspos because they hate themselves and want to starve. isnt proana all inherently fatphobic even if you dont post fatspo? There has been sooo much debate on this, but the way I see it, it offers support to people who feel alone in the world. Connecting you with people all over the world. Posting has allowed me to create a community of over 300 people in just a couple of days. These are all individuals who have gone through similar things as me.
My condition did surface from the desire to look a certain way, yes. But it is so much more than that. My fellow ⭐️🦴 might relate. It’s like no matter how hard your life is, you at least have control over what you put in your body. This keeps me going. now, that difference between th0i0n0s0p0o (T) and f0a0t0s0p0o0 (F) is large
we aren’t humiliating and bullying random people who choose to live. there is a HUGE difference between “ew, I do not want to look like her” and “omg goals”
Both are toxic, though one is better than the other
