A demonstration performance of Your Text Here, a video graphic text score culture jamming self-help advice and the Utopian vision of Fluxus.

This was a project formed between Lucia Graf, Maurice Trentzsch and Jolon Dixon for the Die Anemonen Itinérrances — Unsicherheiten workshop programme and was first performed at Institute für Zukunft during Literarische Herbst 2022.

Things I Love About Performance Poetry

1 - Creating and sharing

It feels great to make up a poem and then share it with the whole world! (or at least a few people in the back of a pub). It's a way to get instant feedback. I can usually tell whether a poem has worked or not. If the room has emptied by the end of my poem, it's safe to say it wasn't successful!! (That has never happened by the way - most audience members are very friendly and encouraging!). But I love to see how people react when I perform.

Open Mic

Open mic

I think the moment's right.

Nervous? You're probably right.

Imagine - going into the lights

The stage a daunting height

All I see left and right

Is pairs of eyes

On my

Self and I

Feel my tongue is tied.

My bespoke tie

Is choking my

Ability to vocalise.

I am mortified.

This could not be going more awry.

I just want to hide

Roll up into a ball and cry

Until the host, who is kind

Sees me for the token guy

Whose material is old and dry

Who needs to be told that he is fine

But how about having the following try

So the person next in line

Can pronounce his rhymes

And you - you can go home and lie

I am sure you will cope just fine

Or then jump into the moat outside

Or go wherever it is that poets die.

And I can say: at least I spoke and tried.

I am joking, mind.

Those were total lies,

So contrived.

Do you really think I would come here just to fall on my backside?

I wrote some lines

I got my time

Others had their turn: now is mine.

I want to own my fright

Not moan my plight

Take off and fly

Keep opening this mic until it looks like a broken pipe

I want to set the whole place alight

Until the smoke reaches this high.

Come across so alive

Tug at your heartstrings and make you feel so raw inside

That when you go home tonight

All you want to do is listen to everything I just said again on Spotify.
