Oof I'm kinda scared to ask... Why do you not want to be an artist professionally?

Its just like, incredibly miserable in my experience.

Everyone wants their dream job of being paid to draw whatever the hell they want but 99% of the time you are hired and tasked to draw things that you don't have a lot of interest in, professionally speaking, and constantly getting your artistic efforts undermined by the rest of the team (this is esp. true in the videogame industry) artists always try to push for better designs and get their takes watered down for the sake of general public pleasing. Also you don't have a security blanket unless you're under long term contract. Most freelancers live gig to gig with the fear of not being able to support themselves if they don't take a job to take a break. Videogame and movie jobs arent stable because companies never keep the art teams, they are laid off and rehired whenever there is a new project

During my major, I drew nonstop for 4 years for class. Not always things I enjoyed, but also not always things I didnt like. In fact I enjoyed my major immensely! It was so fun. But the burnout is very, very real, and the workload was similar (even inferior to) regular art jobs. What happens if you like to draw in your off time? You spend your days making and pumping out art nonstop for hours, and then on your free time breaks you draw some more? I personally couldn't do it. I just wanted to do other things

And like.... I spent the first three years being told by teachers (people with stable, contract based jobs) how cool of a job it is to do art, and then the last year getting grilled on how insanely hard it is to make it out there. If you don't have connections, money, an audience, a studio, it's actually impossible. You need to be your own lawyer, abide by the very strict self employment rules that take a severe chunk out of your earnings. Do all of your finance/schedule/marketing etc while on top of that constantly producing work (I know there's people who can do it but, personally, I cannot) I really admire the people who were able to build themselves up as artists from the ground like this (because its definitely possible, just insanely hard)

Also, making something you love into your job ends up being miserable too. I experienced this with patreon, which I posted to as like a chill thing and it just got increasingly hard to make content for it or just post in general, even drawing my own ocs and sharing stuff about them started to feel like a chore.

Maybe it's just me though, this has just been my personal experience but yeah in general I realized I am immensely happier just keeping art as a hobby or its gonna suck my soul out (Since I already experienced it)

I don't mean to discourage anyone, I think the world in general needs more artists. But for that we would need to actually be taken seriously and valued, which sadly we are not, at all. And if there's anyone reading that is considering art as a job: it is absolutely grueling. It's not an easy job. Even if you desperately love art it can suck the life out of you and the joy for what you do

(As an extra sidenote. Artists are usually exploited using this mentality as well. That they are supposed to love their job. So they expect you to work your wrists off "For the passion". Dont fall victim to it)

how to start putting yourself first

putting yourself is important for your well being. being a person who always wants to please others and other people happy at the risk of your own is an issue. here are a few ways to start putting yourself first.

set boundaries learn how to say no and don't give in to their pressure when they become persistent. if your friends or family call you late night past your bed time, give them a time frame they can call and tell them you will not answer if its not between those time. yeah you might lose people or people will get offended because you're setting boundaries but that says alot about them. they are mad because they can no longer walk all over you.

ask for help when you need it its okay to ask for help. do not be ashamed for needing assistance, no one can do everything all by themselves without losing their mind. trust me i have seen it and lived it.

treat yourself have you been working hard and really want that coffee? GET IT. you want to use that nice expensive face mask? USE IT. you have been eyeing that purse for a while and you are able to afford it? BUY IT. its totally fine to treat yourself whether its a simple cup of coffee or a nice expensive bag. dont feel guilty because you dont think you deserve it or you could get something else thats cheaper.

take care of yourself eat well, move your body, focus and attend to your mental state and limit stress as much as you can. if that means you cant pick up that shift for your co-worker then so be it, no need to stress yourself more than you need to. finish any work at a certain time, for example, be done with school work by 5 pm so you can relax and do your night routine and get as much work done monday through friday so you can enjoy your weekend. you should also PRIORITIZE REST. your body needs adequate sleep and you also just need to just be still. take a 2 minute break every few hours to stretch and relax if you can without being on your phone.

find a hobby its more to life than work and stress. find a hobby you enjoy and make time for it even if its once a week. you dont have to monetize it either, just enjoy it.

this was just a few ways to start prioritizing yourself. if you cant do all of them then just focus on one each month. its okay to do baby steps as long as you are trying.

So many people after clarification on EACC are showing EA they cannot be trusted with the permission of monetarily benefitting from their content and that’s so saddening. EA continues to give leniency and it’s being incredibly abused, as well as back to adfly? are you serious? I thought this ended years ago where we all nodded our heads in agreement that adfly was harmful and KNOWN for putting trojans & other viruses onto your computers. 

I’ve been in this community since i was a child and It’s incredibly disappointing to see where its led up to. from free CC, to EACC which most people were typically content with as long as it fell within the 2-3 weeks rule; myself included, now to complete abuse over the leniency of EA. As an artist, you learn to manage your expectations with regards to the occupation in that you CAN make your work into a career but to not expect it or to expect it to be entirely stable. 

Seeing CC creators treat their art like it absolutely MUST be a career for them rather than a hobby for them to create works they themselves are proud of is extremely disheartening. As an artist I believe everyone has their own right to have compensation for their work, however, when that work shares with a companies game there has got to be an understanding and a line between the compensation.

I highly suggest nobody partake in the creation of CC, or any form of art if their expectation is solely reliant on it becoming a stable career and for no other purpose than that. because i reiterate it CAN Become a full-time job, but you have no guarantee how long it’ll stay that way. 

If you don’t create art, and these sort of works without the motivation of pure enjoyment of the creation, I’m not sure what you’re doing. 

I never speak on things such as this and especially given this topic is a bit hot right now & may get me in trouble with some creators, just know my intentions is never to diminish the effort CC creators put into their works or to say they shouldn’t be allowed compensation; but It’s incredibly foolish to believe so many people thought this could and would always be a stable job for them 

This! You make great points, anon. Honestly I don't think paid cc is good for creators or the people consuming that cc. I have had so many creators tell me that patreon caused them more stress than it was worth. Even the ones at the top seem stressed and burned out. And now reliant on something that could be gone at any time. If this game dies out completely, or EA decides they've had enough, what then? Other modding communities aren't going to allow this, they'd throw you out on your ass for trying to monetize mods, especially cosmetic ones. Maybe second life would be an option? (I know nothing about SL lol) If anything, maybe they need to start utilizing their blender and photoshop skills in other fields in order to find something more stable that doesn't rely on a specific IP. That is to say, if they're relying on this for their entire income. Or, if they're not disabled and can do non-stay at home work, look into other career paths. Bc this could end at any moment really. But they might be working on that already and I hope they are.

who are you…WHO AM I outside of work? i often see people on insta or twitter tagging their workplace but why is that? is it bc we want others to know where work for info purposes? or because we’re proud of where we work? or because there’s a connotation of status behind include our workplace if it’s well known?

social media preys on validation, attention, and our friendship dynamics. for me, instagram used to be a place for sharing memories, documenting life, seeing pictures of friends. now it’s rife with influencers and content creators portraying this lifestyle often unattainable for most. somehow we all want to be content creators… maybe often thinking “how can i have that lifestyle too?”. but why aspire for someone else’s lifestyle when we can fully have one that’s uniquely ours?

instagram specifically distorts the concept of what it means to connect with people and often that could be why many still feel lonely. because social media will never be enough. it’s not going to make you feel less lonely. only face to face interaction can do that for you. social media makes you feel like you’re connecting with people when really the majority don’t even remember the last time they talked to you in real life.

why do we feel compelled to share every moment we spend with people or friends on social? because we want others to know we’re not lonely? because we want others to know that we have friends (even if we actually feel lonely)?

by no means do i judge anyone who does do this btw. if you find it meaningful pls live your life. but this stems from my feelings towards social, whenever i post i feel icky, like i’ve crossed my own boundaries, like why in the world am i sharing this with people i haven’t talked to in 2 years?? who are we without our followings and our social networks? (aka referring to the twitter app slowly imploding).

we’re too money oriented. actually, i’d say this is not our fault given how jobs and systems don’t pay many of us livable wages so of course some of us have to resort to monetizing our hobbies. but at the same time there’s a boundary right? i know people with the attitude “i’m only going to do this hobby if i’m good at it and can make money.” the only reason we even might not take on hobbies we’re not good at is because we know we might not be able to make money from it.

but i say…do the damn hobby anyway (being bad at a hobby doesn’t exist unless you actually believe that.

you know what’s funny? how my friends that i visited in new york were more excited and put energy and effort into hanging out then my friends at home. when i’m at home my friends delay plans a lot— busy lives, work, other commitments, health issues. i understand of course a friend is struggling or simply needs their alone time. but over time, if a friend keeps delaying plans over and over…i wonder “will we ever hang out at some point?”

whereas in new york it was so easy to make plans and see friends and meet and do fun things and talk and actually learn about each other! like my friends actually MAKE TIME!! Whereas here my friends assume that i’ll always be around and feel there’s nothing wrong with delaying hangouts. which maybe there’s nothing wrong, but…

have we ever considered the power and consequences behind the belief of “see you next time?”, “see you soon”, “i’ll text them later”, “i’ll cancel and reschedule (x plans)”, “oh i’ll see the lm next week, month..”??? sometimes days turn to weeks and weeks turns into months and months then into years. perhaps it’s the concept of death that makes me think about friendships this way. the idea that we take our friends for granted and can hang out with any time, assuring ourselves they will always be there.

but what if they’re not? what if they die the next day? the next week? what then? this isn’t me blaming my friends or whoever is reading this, but it’s something more people should think about. we take people for granted too often and in the future we’ll regret doing so.

and how does social media feed into this? the way in which we check on insta for our friends life updates without asking our friends directly how they are doing. can’t hang out with them or caught up in a while?— check insta.

i think i’m angry. or should i say… i know i’m angry.

High school and college are absolutely not a reflection of the real world or how life will turn out. They are not the best years of your life.

You are just like other girls and as soon as you get over that pick me ass bitch phase, you will make some incredible girlfriends and your life will be so much richer.

You don't need to keep a wall up between your heart and the one who loves you. Love is terrifying, but it hurts more to keep him out than to let him in.

Stand on your convictions no matter which way the wind blows. Listen to the arguments presented and analyze them within your moral framework. Tolerance does not mean blindly going along with anything other people say.

Enjoy drinking while you can because you're going to go from drinking men twice your size under the table, to death by hangover after three pints.

You only have this life, so choose joy.

Again, this is advice I would give myself. If it doesn't apply to you, then it doesn't apply to you. But I have always found wisdom in listening to what people would say to their younger selves. Hindsight is 20/20 and all that.

Because this is starting over on Twitter again - I know it's AO3 donation season. As a reminder, AO3 is a non-profit. Their donations go primarily to planned infrastructure updates and hosting costs. Maintaining a site of that size and upgrading security regularly are things that are expensive. TRUST ME, you do not know how much it costs to run large sites with massive amounts of data.

AO3 is not punishing writers by saying they can't put donation links in their posts. They're protecting them. (As a matter of fact, nobody can put donation links on AO3) The reasoning is that as long as these are presented without any possible cost or fee, they are legally protected fanworks.

But what about people who charge for fanart? That's a really iffy grey area. There's a long tradition of artists copying other artists work to learn - and legally, you can sell it so long as you aren't claiming you created the original thing. (Yes, copying the masters is the original fanart) But every once in awhile, you get corporations now that get awfully litigious, so it gets iffy.

But you know who will sue over anything? The publishing world. You take one step into making money where they're supposed to? They WILL sue you.

The people who've published physical copies of fanfic, usually have to go to great lengths to show that all they're doing is charging for the manufacturing costs for this very reason - it's often much more trouble than it's worth.

Fandom has a long long long history of creators, studios, publishers coming after fan writers. We've seen far too many works vanish overnight, sites vanish, and authors quit writing completely. All because they were facing possible legal action they couldn't afford to defend.

Which is why AO3 was founded - and in fact, the excess donations go INTO their legal fund to help defend cases about transformative works.

So, I saw you say in your last-ish ask response that (it sounds like) you basically took the characters from TW and little else for Final Pack? Assuming that I read that right, then why write it as fic and not spin it into something original? Like, I guess I'm really asking, how do you let go of the "original > fic" mindset enough to just let yourself write fic instead of turning things into original stuff? Or was that never a problem for you?

I mean the short answer is that I wanted to write a story about those people, and I wanted to write it for the other people who already like those people.

Like with final pack, the story was never at any point “I want to write an original story about a post apocalypse where some human runs around learning about supernatural creatures” and I just subbed in some other characters instead of making my own. The story was ALWAYS “I want to see how Stiles and Derek, specifically, would interact in an AU of what happens after the 2012 apocalypse, if it was a supernatural apocalypse and they hadn’t met before.” And back when I started, there were a lot of people around who would have enjoyed that exact story, and I wanted to share it with them. Maybe I could have done it as an original from the start, but that was not ever the point of it.

The long answer is several answers, really.

Writing is a hobby, not a career for me. I want it to be fun. I want to enjoy doing it. I don’t want to do it for money, though I don’t mind getting money for having done it or donating it so that others get money (like charity auctions!). With original work there’s often a huge push to go get ~Published~ and ~sell your story~ and I’m just... not into it. Like maybe someday I would like to have some original stuff written and self-published so people could have a copy if they wanted, but it would be me writing the stories for me first, not me writing to make money. Capitalism is already so insidious in everyone’s lives that it’s nearly impossible to find a hobby that someone isn’t screaming at you to monetize. But you CANNOT monetize fanfic and in fact people get REALLY MAD if you try and that pleases me GREATLY. I LOVE having a hobby that capitalism can’t really touch because it shot itself in the foot with copyright laws.

I also don't particularly care for character creation; I love caring about characters but it's so much work to make whole entire people and then get to know them. I don't watch a lot of new TV for the same reason. It's just a lot of work I don't actually need to do, to tell a story I want to tell. But you know what I DO love? Worldbuilding. Fuck yeah that’s the good stuff. I love building worlds and I LOVE setting up complicated plots if I can. But I also love a good one shot that just sort of puts a magnifying glass to something I want to touch more. I don’t feel like I should have to create a whole new set of original characters and a world and a plot every time I want to make some trope play out.

Usually when I write fanfic, the story is a result of my love for the characters. When I write original, the characters are a product of the story. If you remove them from that story, then they're no longer those characters because they don't exist anywhere else. When I'm the one making the source, the source is... limited, in a way. Those characters can only belong to one source, and the rest is not their story (even if a million people write stories with those characters later). But when I write fanfiction, the source is already determined and I can just use the characters in any story without worrying that doing so will fundamentally change the source material. 

I also have a great love of examining people. I can write an original and examine those characters once, maybe more if I wrote sequels, but I cannot take them out of their world. But I can write fanfiction and I can twist and turn them a hundred times if I want, and see how a bunch of different stressors and settings affect them (I mean obviously how I THINK it would affect them based on what knowledge I have of them). This is a lot of fun for me! It's basically a puzzle with no final answer and that's hugely enriching for my little gremlin brain. And if it loses interest, I can always find another set of characters for it to chew on.

Another thing is like... There's obviously a difference between original fiction and fan fiction, but it's not "one is worse/lesser" so much as "one is a different genre with different goals." You can argue that, like, science fiction is better than westerns, but in the end they're actually just different and meant for different readers. Original fiction is great, but it can't really be compared, because it wants different things; both to accomplish different things and to get different things from the readers. If you like a character or a world or a trope, you can only get so far reading original fiction. You get one story, or maybe a couple stories, and then that’s it, and they might be absolutely perfect and amazing, but it’s still over once the source is consumed. And that one story often involves a great set of things like a cool setting or an interesting plot, but because of the way mass consumption works, it necessarily often does not contain other things like in depth character studies or campy tropes or major fluff or major angst, domestic situations, character death, or, like.... smut. Fanfiction means if you like that character or that setting or that plot, you can write about them as many times as you like in as many ways as you like AND you haven’t got to go through an editor in order to have it or give it to others. You can slap that bad boy up on AO3 and start screaming about it with friends and readers the hot second they’ve gotten through it.

Which brings me to my last point.... fanfiction allows you to interact with a community immediately. With original fiction, you a) have to wait until you’ve finished writing the whole thing, which is miserable for me b) even if you DO finish writing everything and publish your story, now you still can’t really interact like a fan, you can’t read fanfiction or meta or anything because if you ever wanted to write more, you could be accused of plagiarizing your ideas (even if they were yours to begin with), c) you have to convince people to put in the effort of getting to know your characters and world and plot before you can interact at all, which is exhausting and may or may not happen even after all the work and d) you literally cannot write fanfiction of your own stuff.... its not really fanfiction at that point, it’s apocryphal text. And if there’s any sort of fandom to speak of, it WILL start problems. I hate problems. Problems are the worst!! I have enough of them.

So I dunno. It’s a whole thing, I have way more feelings about it, but I’m tired and my head’s killing me.

If you’re asking me why I don’t write originals, the answer is usually “because I don’t want to.”

If you’re asking how you, too, might be able to get over it and write fanfiction, the answer is “write what makes you happiest.” Maybe that’s not fanfiction. Which I guess makes that bad advice for how to get over it and write fanfiction, but there it is.
