The Real Story Behind Suspiria (2018) And The 5 Other Paranormal Places You Need To Know About

It’s the classic Hollywood story:

Girl moves to a different country to pursue her dreams of stardom.

Girl auditions for dance academy.

Girl is selected as the new host for the head witch of a coven.

Oh and there’s some Nazis in there as well!

Okay, so maybe it doesn’t fit in the Netflix Rom-Com section…

But regardless - it is all based on a series of true stories.

It was only last year that a remake of the 1977 art classic - Suspiria (2018) - hit Amazon Prime and a handful of theatres. And joined at its hip was a flurry of top-rated reviews that swooned over its artistic rehashing of the horror genre.

Well, I say top-rated...

For a horror movie it faced a standing ovation, but it was still on the receiving end of many a ‘meh’.

Nevertheless, fit with an intricate plot and fleshed out with garish gore, this is undoubtedly one of the best horror films of this decade.

(It it here that I realise that we are about to enter a new decade and I feel like lying face down on the floor and having an existential crisis.)

And it turns out that it’s twisted plot is actually set against a very real backdrop.

Yet despite the intricate set of stories providing the foundation to this tale, Suspiria rarely wears the ‘based on a true story’ label.

Sure, one of the writer’s own stories is often discussed when it comes to this film, but the reality actually goes much deeper and much further than this.

For the last week I’ve been attempting to keep us with the winding story, but it is little discussed, well, anywhere.

Nevertheless, I’ve brought together everything I could uncover, and present to you this complete guide to the real story behind Suspiria!

Today’s post will cover the essay that served as the main inspiration, the tale it is directly based on, and the paranormal phenomena of magic triangles that support it, too.

Let’s get spooky.

First, Let’s Recap The Plot Of Suspiria

It’s the 1970s. We are in Germany, near the tripoint-border of Switzerland and France.

The main chick from 50 Shades of Grey rocks up to, like, the hottest dance academy to try her hand at being America’s next drag superstar the next big thing.

Problem is, the academy is run by 3 matrons who worship the Three Mothers - a group of witches determined to bring tears, sighs and darkness to the world!

(mwahahaha)

When someone does call them out for being witches, they get tortured and killed.

Oh, and it all happens through the medium of dance!

No, seriously.

All the big moments of the plot coincide with dance numbers.

It’s like the prom scene in films about high schools, or maybe the big game!

Anyway - this new kid gets voted as the host for the freshly elected head witch of the coven. And accurately, the other witch who wanted to be elected isn’t happy.

When one of the dancers gets kidnapped, a fellow student investigates, and finds clues in her journal which leads her to the witches’ inner sanctum.

This is where the witchy stuff goes down.

They #roadtrip it to the inner sanctum, and find the kidnapped student who is being used in a ritual.

And this all happens at the same time as the prom big dance!

The ritual ends up being done incorrectly, and the new kid is possessed by the Jeremy Hunt of the witches.

The possessed new kid then avenges anyone who didn't vote for them.

This witchy-posessy-death-fest ensues and features as a part of the big dance.

Witchy control of the dance academy ensues.

TL;DR - just watch an episode of Dance Moms.

Suspiria Is Originally Based Off The Essay Suspiria De Profundis

The film might be traced back to many paranormal phenomena, but the basis for the film starts here in 1845.

Thomas De Quincey, the author behind Suspiria De Profundis, wrote a collection of short essays which centre on psychological fantasy.

It is even believed that he wrote these essays based on his own visual experience of Opium; this clearly births the artsy-fartsy nature of the film.

However, it was a screenwriter’s use of these essays to create the original 1970s Suspiria which tied all the strings this post will talk about together.

The inspiration from the essay centres on the three witches known as The Three Mothers.

And even though this seems a small literature-based link to the film, Argento expands the focus on the Three Mothers to other paranormal phenomena that mirror this.

And this paranormal phenomena includes The Magical Triangle - a region in Europe where occult communities come together and paranormal events are amplified.

However, it turns out that there is not just one magic triangle.

There are five.

But before we take a roadtrip round all these triangles, we have to discuss the story that directly influenced the film.

Nicologidi’s True Story That Inspired Suspiria

So, we know that Argento’s knowledge of paranormal phenomena directly influenced the film...

But it’s the other screenwriter - Nicolodi - which has a story which directly mirrors the events of the film.

Well, to an extent, that is.

Nicolodi’s Grandmother went to a Piano school in the area Argento is so obsessed with, and the Grandmother claimed that at this school they practiced black magic.

Clearly this is a simple tale not dissimilar to the other films toting ‘based on a true story’.

However, it’s how Argento expanded this to include other paranormal phenomenon that rightly bestows upon it this classic - and often misused - tagline.

Argento’s Magical Triangle

“There’s very little to joke about. It’s something that exists…”

Argento clearly based Suspiria on real paranormal phenomenon.

And it starts here, with The Magical Triangle

It is claimed that the area where France, Germany and Switzerland meet has a history closely linked to the occult.

Whether it’s cursed cathedrals or the collection of occult communities, this triangle was one of the core pieces of inspiration for the flick.

And one of the factors contributing to the occult-focus of this triangle is the teachings of Rudolph Steiner.

Steiner - a social reformer and occultist - created a anthrosophic community in this area. This includes the Waldorf School which was rumoured to have practiced both paganism and satanism, mirroring Nicolodi’s story and the film itself.

Unfortunately, I can find very little information on this triangle itself.

But the other magic triangles I have discovered have received their own fair share of attention.

The 4 Other Magical Triangles You Need To Know About

There are 2 other magic triangles in Europe, alone.

And both actually come together and meet in Turin - a city which is considered a hub of supernatural activity.

The first triangle of these triangles is the Black Magic Triangle:

This includes San Francisco, London, and Turin, and its history dates back to the Roman Era.

Said magic is believed to come from the energetic currents that flow through the cities, with Turin staking its claim as the most magical - and this is because Turin is supposedly suspended between good and evil.

The white magic triangle involves Turin, Lyon and Prague - and all I can find on it is this:

It is claimed that ‘those who know’ go to this area to pay homage to the ‘grand old man’ - make of that what you will..

This magical and mysterious area is further inferred by Turin’s position on the 45th parallel.

“Turin is the place where my nightmares are best.” - Argento.

Yes - that quote is from Argento, confirming the influence of multiple magical triangles in the creation of Suspiria!

And why wouldn’t his nightmares be best here?

This Italian city has witnessed its own history of paranormal events and phenomena, and is even believed to house the hidden gate to hell.

Take the Piazzo Statuto:

Not only has it seen a bloody battle back in the 18th century, it’s angel statue represents the dichotomy between the good and evil Turin allegedly contains.

The angel can also look like the devil, and even bears the mark of a 5 pointed star.

Turin also is claimed to have once housed alchemical labs underground with rumours of metal being converted to gold, a myth relating to the legend of the Philosopher’s stone which has its own paranormal associations.

Ghosts have also been said to roam the streets, such as that of Christine Marie who pushed past lovers into the river to drown.

The final paranormal phenomena of Turin I want to discuss is that of Palazzo Trucchi di Levaldigi.

Fit with a hell-inspired door-knocker, this is yet another reminder on the mish mash of magic triangles spread across the world.

Indeed this building is the city’s tarot manufacturer. And the building number? It’s 15.

The tarot card with the no. 15 is the card of the Devil.

The 40,000 satanists rumoured to be lurking the streets of Turin and performing rituals in basements confirms its mysterious existence further.

Our next magical triangle is probably the most famous mystery in existence:

The Bermuda Triangle.

This triangle deserves it’s own post given the sheer volume of evidence, debunking and discussion given to its name. Nevertheless, it further reinforces the reality behind Suspiria.

Also known as the Devil’s Triangle, this is an area from which travellers who sail or fly through often go missing.

The recorded occurrences began in 1950 with the loss of Flight 19.

Whether it’s the claims of UFOs, or the lost city of Atlantis’ technology, this triangle be a spooky one.

Our final triangle is a little less international, and resides in the state of Massachusetts in the US of A:

It’s the Bridgewater Triangle.

Named by paranormal investigator Loren Coleman, this 200 square mile triangle has been a home to many a creature in its time.

From a huge black dog back in 1976, to tall, winged creatures, and even Bigfoot, this is a hub for paranormal sightings.

Weirder occurrences such as mutilated cattle have also been discovered, confirming that Suspiria’s story goes much deeper - and further - than we would like…

The True Story Behind The Three Witches

The last piece of paranormal phenomena we have to discuss is that of the Three Witches. And no, Suspiria isn’t the first piece of pop culture to make note of witches coming in threes.

Sure, Shakespeare beat Thomas to the chase with the Weird Sisters in Macbeth, but three is actually a very spiritual number.

Clearly the most obvious claim to this is the Holy Trinity: God, Jesus and the Holy Ghost.

But mirroring this is the stages of the moon; the concept of Mind, Body and Spirit; and Mother, Maiden, and Crone.

The last trinity points to pagan beliefs regarding the seasons, but also relies closely on their perspective of witches, particularly in British folk religions. Witches were often believed to come in threes, and contained a mother, a maiden, and a crone.

And thus, as triangles have 3 corners and 3 sides, we see how a link is forged between the 3 witches in Suspiria, and the magical triangles already explained in this post.

This is especially true given the importance of a triangle as a symbol in paganism.

Whether its derived from paranormal theory, or sought from the tales of terror lurking around the world, Suspiria isn’t just based on 19th century literature.

Indeed, it has pointed us to a paranormal phenomenon - that of magic triangles - little discussed among us mere mortals.

"You can't be serious, can you?" Stephen asked, static as Y/N climbed the steps of the Sanctum to meet him on the landing. "Of course I'm serious, Stephen. I have already postponed this meeting with you and my family. I have respected your role as Supreme Master of the Mystic Arts, but this time even this will not be an excuse.” Y/N said sternly.

"You do not seem to be respecting now." He said when Y/N stepped in front of him on the landing. "I can't go on like this, Y/N, I have a duty to keep.”

"Don't give me that one, even the Avengers allowed themselves a night of leisure. You're going to go with me to my family's Christmas party.” Y/N inquired, and he snorted still in stubbornness.

“I will not.” He stubborn.

“We'll see if you will not.”

After much insistence, in the end Y/N's stubbornness was stronger than Stephen's and there they were on their way to Y/N's parents' house for the party on Christmas Eve. As much as Stephen was very handsome in the black suit he wore, not to mention the Agamotto Eye he insisted on wearing, being the only thing in his magical universe that you didn't mind wearing during the party, he still was sulking in the car looking at the gray landscape of the city.

"Do not be so angry. Wong has already said that he can take care of everything in your absence.” Y/N said to try to cheer her boyfriend, but he only responded with a grunt. "Come on, Stephen? It will be fun! Not to mention that we have been dating for two years and you have not accompanied me in any family event, you owe me that.”

“Because these events are foolish!” He finally replied, and Y/N quickly looked at him in disbelief before turning her attention back to the road.

“Foolish? Stephen! It's Christmas! It's a world holiday! It is even sin that you are talking about!” Y/N replied, shocked. “It's a pagan holiday! I don't see why celebrate it.” Stephen said turning as he could for Y/N, and she snorted irritably.

“Blasphemy! Christmas isn’t a capitalist date, Mr. Strange!” Y/N was ironic and apologetic at the mention of his name, and Stephen noticed that it was only with this that they had said something they shouldn't. So much so that at the first opportunity you had, Y/N parked the car and hung up, giving all of her attention to Stephen who seemed shocked by his girlfriend's sudden stiffness. “Christmas is a date to bring the whole family together, to strengthen the bonds with those you love, because these are the people who will be with us in all situations, be they good or bad. It is a day to have compassion, respect and generosity and try to make peace with those who had conflict. It’s not only because they invented a big old man who gives gifts to behaved children that one must forget the true meaning of Christmas: fraternization and love in the family.”

Stephen was standing in the car seat to see how much that date had meant to Y/N. He had never seen Christmas that way, had never wondered about the true meaning of Christmas, much less given importance, at least until now.

“So... If you want to go back to Sanctum, you can come back! I will not force you anymore! If you don't like Christmas, it's your problem, but don't disrespect it.” Y/N said unlocking the car and stared at Stephen hoping he would get out of the car, but he didn't leave.

“I will not leave.” Stephen said looking at her.

"I will not have to take you back to Sanctum, so if you want to come back you'll have to get off and take the subway."

“I'm not going to Sanctum! I will go with you.” Stephen said earnestly making Y/N exasperate.

“Oh gosh! Because I had to fall in love with this idiot!” Y/N grunted, locked the car again and turned it on, following the way back to her parents' house all about Stephen's smile.

When they arrived in suburban New York, Y/N parked the car in front of a large, nicely decorated home lit for Christmas, as well as the other houses on the same street, as well as the thick layer of snow that covered the grass, the trees and the roofs.

Y/N and Stephen got out of the car and she circled the car to the front of the trunk and took out some bags from there.

“It's the house I grew up in! It's not a mansion, but it's cozy.” Y/N said as she picked up some bags and Stephen walked over to her. “It's a beautiful house! Looks like a good place to start a family.” He said as he moved to the side of Y/N. “Do you think?” Y/N asked with a mocking smile and he confirmed smiling the same way to his girlfriend.

"Do they know about me?" Stephen asked as Y/N handed him some of the bags. “Well, they know. I tell them, but you don't accompanied me on no holiday, so they think our relationship was an urban legend, like gnomes and fairies.” Y/N sneered and Stephen smiled sheepishly. “Sorry about that, but protect the Earth of mystical attacks routine much of my time." Stephen said accompanying Y/N by the small trail excavated to the entrance door.

“I understand that your work is important, dear. I don't mind staying with you once in a while or your sudden appearances in my apartment. But I needed you to come at least once with me so they would stop tormenting me.” Y/N stood on tiptoe to steal a quick kiss of her boyfriend who corresponded without delay. “I couldn't stand my cousin any longer, saying: Your boyfriend is so magical that he disappears in magic.” Y/N scoffed, and Stephen laughed, though awkwardly.

“At least now they will see that I'm for real.

“Thankfully yes.” Y/N rang the bell.

As the door opened revealing Y/N's mother, she gave a little shriek of happiness and hugged her tightly, almost knocking the bags into her hands.

"Mom, this is Stephen, my boyfriend. Stephen, this is my mother Margareth.” Y/N introduced him and her mother was still staring at him.

“Oh gosh! it really exists?!” Margareth said looking at Stephen in surprise, making Stephen laugh and Y/N embarrassed.

“Mom!”

“Oh, sorry, Honey!” Y/N's mom said and extended her hand to Stephen, who, a little embarrassed by the bags, greeted her. “It's a pleasure finally meet you, honey, and you can call me Maggie! Let's go in, you both! I don't want you both have cold!” Maggie practically yanked the bags out of Y/N's hands and gave them room to enter.

Already accommodated in the living room and more heated after a hot cocoa, Y/N's family surrounded them and filled them with questions like ‘How did you two meet?’, 'What he did to live?’, 'Isn't he too old for you?' or 'Why is he no longer a surgeon?' and when they were finally content to learn more about Stephen's life, dinner was served, where Y/N thought the questions would end, but that was only the first round.

Stephen and Y/N sat at the table next to their grandmothers and a cousin, Kate, well inconvenient who made a point of sitting next to Stephen. That made Y/N jealous, but she disguised herself well.

"So, Dr. Strange? When are you planning to get married?” Grandpa Joshua asked, and Stephen almost choked on the piece of turkey. “Grandpa!” Y/N scolded him, even though she wanted to laugh, but nervous, as she helped Stephen.

"That's a very simple question, my dear. If you've been together for two years, why not already think about it?” Joshua snapped, not allowing himself to be carried away by his granddaughter's reprehending look. "If she did not want to, there were more people in line." Kate said and it boiled Y/N's blood.

"Thanks for the suggestion, but I'm perfectly happy with my relationship with Y/N.” Stephen answered Kate, surprising not only her but Y/N and the rest of the family at the table. He leaned down a bit to face Joshua. “We still haven't talked about this because of my work, but..." He looked at Y/N who smiled and blushed. "I think it's time to think about it."

"And how many grandchildren do you want to give me?" Maggie couldn't resist asking, leaving Y/N embarrassed enough to start eating so she wouldn't have to respond. "Well... I..." Stephen looked at you in a distress call, but he had to answer for himself, since Y/N's mouth was full. "I don't know... maybe one or two."

"Aren't you practicing, are you?" Y/N's father, James, asked with a deadly look at Stephen and that was enough for Y/N to almost choke, causing laughter to the table. "You came prepared this year, eh?" Y/N snapped, still a little hoarse. "And I don't think you should ask questions that you don't want to know the answer to, Dad."

"What's the big deal? You're my little girl! I want to know everything that happens in your life.” James snapped, causing even more laughter to everyone at the table. "Even how many times I have sex with my boyfriend?" Y/N snapped back, surprising Stephen and James, making the others laugh. "Maybe you're right... I really do not want to know that!" James agreed, and Y/N laughed.

After dinner and the exchange of gifts, Y/N and Stephen got in the car to return home. Much of the way they were silent, until Stephen spoke.

"Now I get it..." Stephen commented quietly and you smirked. "You get it what?" Y/N asked with a sarcastic smile on her face without even looking at her boyfriend.

“You understand me...”

"Say, baby, talking doesn't hurt.” Y/N encouraged, and Stephen sighed. "You were right about Christmas." Stephen said in embarrassment and Y/N laughed. "I know..." Y/N stopped the car at the red light. She looked at Stephen. “Merry Christmas Stephen!”

“Merry Christmas Y/N.” Stephen smiled, feeling sorry and giving Y/N a kiss, only pulling away from her as he heard the car horns behind them.

Witchcraft 101: Necromancy

Necromancy is a form of witchcraft that has been practised all over the world by a great number of cultures, communities, and faiths for a very, very long time.

But,… what is Necromancy?

When defined by the search engine, Google, Necromancy is as follows:

“Necromancyˈnɛkrə(ʊ)mansi/”

Noun

The supposed practice of communicating with the dead, especially in order to predict the future.“alchemy, necromancy, and other magic practices”.

Witchcraft, sorcery, or black magic in general.

Origin: Middle English nigromancie, via Old French from medieval Latin nigromantia, changed (by association with Latin niger, nigr- ‘black’) from late Latin necromantia, from Greek (see necro-, -mancy). The spelling was changed in the 16th century to conform with the late Latin form.

Comes from the Greek “Nekros” (”corpse”) and “manteia” (”prophecy”).

Necromancy in History

Another form of necromancy described in the literature of the ancient Greeks is through κατάβασις katabasis or “descent”. In this process, the practitioner or hero descends into Hades, the underworld, to confer with the dead directly in their own land. This was most likely performed via some ceremonially prescribed method of astral projection.

Necromancy in Ancient Greece:

The ancient Greeks may have practiced ἡ ν��κυια or nekyia similar to that described in Homer’s The Odyssey. The ritual described required travelling to a lonesome place near the mouth of Hades, digging a pit and filling it with the blood of of a sacrificed ram and ewe. This caused the dead to gather around the sacrifice and he was able to treat with them for assistance.

One location in Greece where such rites may have taken place is the Necromanteion Νεκρομαντεῖον temple (trans: “Oracle of the Dead”) in Ephyra which was sited along a river believed to flow directly into the underworld. It was most likely here that Odysseus performed his rite and Herodotus reports that the 6th century tyrant Periander sent messengers here to inquire of his dead wife Melissa. Visitors would be given a meal containing narcotics of some sort and then would be led through twisting corridors, leaving offerings as they go which the Priest, the nekyomanteia, asked questions and chanted prayers. The Romans destroyed this temple in 167BC.

During the Early and High Middle Ages, however, necromancy was occasionally seen in practice by Christian clerics. Rituals written by Christian necromancy, particularly those practiced by Medieval clerics, are often heavy with Christian symbolism, traditional Christian prayers and “Names of God” so as to easily disguise these rituals as acts of prayer and devotion. These clerics were highly educated and had access to magical texts from both East and West and combined these practices with exorcism and other Christian practices. They experimented a great deal with both necromancy and demonology; often in conjunction as the two were frequently conflated. As a result, most Christian sources for necromancy cannot be relied upon as they are mostly about demons, not the dead.

Necromancy in Abrahamic Lore:

The opinion of Abrahamic tradition is largely that Necromancy is impossible at best and any messages received from the dead are really demonic forces in disguise sent by Satan to fool the unwary. At any rate, Christianity strictly forbids Necromancy and all forms of divination in the Book of Deuteronomy (18:9–12) and further illustrates what a bad idea it is in 1 Samuel when Saul seeks the aid of a medium to get some advice from the deceased Samuel, only to receive a fierce chiding from Samuel and assurances that he’s going to die soon. Most Christian apologists insist that this was impossible and that the image of Samuel was an illusion, perhaps an angel sent to give the message or a demon bent on trickery. Thus, all necromancy is actually the summoning of demons.

Necromancy in Modern Witchcraft

Nowadays, Necromancy is extensively practised in Quimbada, and some other African traditions, such as voodoo. It is also used in some branches of Santeria. It is not exclusive to these sects of paganism and witchcraft, however.

What is Necromancy, then?

In present day practises, the term Necromancy is used as an umbrella term for any magical workings that involve death, the dead, spirits and anything relating to those things.

It is said that seances, and channeling of this ilk verge on Necromancy when the invoked spirits are asked questions pertaining to future events.

Traditionally, it is the practise of divining using the dead as a channeling tool (via their spirits or actual physical bodies), or the act of utilising the bodies of the deceased in magical workings.

Nowadays, Necromancy remains true to its roots in divination, but the title has grown to encompass death related workings of all kinds.

In fiction, Necromancy is often seen as raising the dead.

The Edge of Reality

Chapter 1: 177A Bleecker Street

GREENWICH VILLAGE – NEW YORK

On the corner of Bleecker Street and Fenno Place stood a three-storey townhouse. Believed to have been built in the late 19th century, it also rather curiously contained an odd architectural mix from the art deco, regency and neoclassical periods. Dominating the structure was a large ornate window in the zinc-panelled slopping roof. The size of the window had led to speculation that the original owner had been an artist who’d had it designed specifically for his studio on the third storey. Not a wholly unreasonable assumption given that Greenwich Village had become at that time the bohemian heart of New York.

But for others the circular window left them feeling uncomfortable, as it felt like a malevolent eye was watching them, tracking their every move as they made their way down the street. This reaction however may have more to do with the rumours surrounding the site where the Victorian brownstone now stood, rather than the window itself. For it was said to have had a dark past that included: where pagan sacrifices were performed, being used as a pauper’s graveyard, then cursed by a shaman, before becoming the headquarters for a satanic cult.

It was these very extraordinarily supernatural, if somewhat macabre events that made it the perfect location to build this particular house, where ley lines ran beneath its very foundations, making it a unique focal point for all manner of mystical energies

Upon crossing the threshold it becomes immediately clear that all is not as it would appear. For here, the laws of physics had been turned on their head. Time, space, size, and even shape have no meaning.

Steps led down from the entrance into the first floor’s massive circular foyer where a magnificent staircase dominated the centre of the room. The foyer was softly lit leaving the room largely in shadow, but shedding enough light to reveal a rich colour pallet of browns and greens that covered the walls and the sturdy columns that encircled the whole room. Into the curved walls were a series of specifically built alcoves containing cabinets, pictures and plush sofas. The beautifully tiled floor with its intricate patterns kept with the colour scheme of the rest of the room, but added a third in the form of a burnished orange which gave the room a warm glow.

Going up the sweeping staircase led to a mezzanine landing, where a distortion in time and space had allowed the creation of a series of labyrinthine corridors. Along each of these corridors were an infinite number of doors, both literal and figurative, that led to endless chambers linked to an unimaginable number of dimensions.

The first floor contained the accommodation areas. It was split into two wings. One was for the use of the current tenant and his staff, while the other was at the disposal of any guests that came to stay.

The second mezzanine landing contained another remarkable corridor. But unlike those found on the first landing, this one resembled the ground floor foyer. Beautifully carved alcoves that resembled works of art lined the endless hallway. Housed within each alcove were bookcases, figurines and chairs.

Called the Rotunda Corridor, its purpose was to lead you to a raised anteroom that possessed three glass doors known as the Rotunda of Gateways. These didn’t send you to different dimensions. Their purpose was closer to home. The glass doors were portals from which you could enter various locations here on Earth. With the twist of a dial positioned on the frame surrounding the portals it was possible to access locations such as: snowy mountaintops, rainforests, deserts, and even the ocean.

The Sanctum Sanctorum took up the whole of the top floor.

Three quarters of which was dedicated to the Chamber of Relics. Behind towering glass and wooden display cases were all kinds of mystical artefacts: lamps, quarterstaves, wands, blades and daggers. There was also one cabinet that was conspicuously empty…

The remaining quarter was taken up by the Room of Reflection that was continually bathed in light from the enormous window known as the Window of Worlds. Artefacts were displayed here too. On one side of the window was an axe and shield. While on the opposite side was a curious looking suit of armour. The Room of Reflection was primarily a meditation chamber, but it also contained an extensive library of mystical and occult texts. Off to the side in its own little anteroom was what looked like nothing more than a crystal ball, but the Orb of Agamotto was so much more.

This then was the New York Sanctum, a protective shield that masqueraded as a modest Victorian townhouse, where the notions of size were turned up-side-down, while rooms could be fixed in place or could choose to move at whim.

Chapter 2: It's A Date

THE NEW YORK SANCTORUM – PRIVATE QUARTERS - BEDROOM

The canopy of the king-sized four-poster bed that dominated the room was gold with intricate patterns embroidered in burgundy. The rest of the room reflected the same colour scheme, with the walls painted a warm burgundy, while gold highlighted the doorframes and skirting boards.

The room was currently bathed in a soft glow that came from a number of light fixtures strategically fixed around the room. The intention, to offer a sense of peace and tranquillity.

It was a sentiment Stephen Strange was feeling anything but as he stood before the full-length mirror, checking his appearance with a critical eye.

It had been awhile since he’d been on a date, a real date, a proper date. Not one that was tacked on as part of a speaking engagement that he’d been asked to attend.

He wanted to make a good impression.

The irony was not lost on him. Formally as one of New York’s, if not the world’s top neurosurgeons, his arrogance had ensured that his life had become one of excess, with his money spent the moment he earned it. As a result his personal life became more and more meaningless as he chased the next accolade, the next interview, the next as yet untried procedure.

Then he’d had the devastating car accident that had destroyed his hands, and therefore his ability to continue in the field that had made his name. But fate had stepped in, leading him in a completely unforeseen direction.

Now he was the Sorcerer Supreme defender of the Earth, a role he had become adept and confidant performing.

But as he gazed into the mirror, the man reflected there, in his expensive black Armani tuxedo and bowtie, that confidence was lacking.

The Cloak of Levitation sensing his anxiety did its best to assist him as he put the finishing touches to his ensemble, a white rose in a buttonhole. But then its help became a hindrance as it began to fiddle with his fringe.

“Enough!” Stephen snapped irritably, brushing it out of the way.

The cloak immediately moved back.

Picking up his sling-ring, Stephen opened a dimensional gateway that led straight to the outside of Molly’s flat. As he made to leap through, the Sorcerer Supreme gave one final order to the relic.

“Stay.”

The cloak did as instructed, moving to sulk dejectedly in the corner.

MOLLY’S FLAT – LONDON

No sooner had he knocked on the door than it was opened, to reveal a vision that took Stephen’s breath away.

As a pathologist, Molly’s attire was one of practicality: white lab coat, flat shoes, and her hair pulled back into a simple ponytail. When not at work she tended to favour baggy clothes that were either brightly coloured, or patterned with flowers or kittens. It was as though she was determined to hide or deny her femininity.

That was clearly not the case today, for which Stephen was truly grateful.

Today her petite figure was proudly on display, accentuated by the sleeveless, figure-hugging satin knee-length cocktail dress she wore. The love-heart neckline enhanced the gentle swell of her breast. Her hair was pulled back in a French plait, while her height had been given a subtle lift thanks to the aid of four-inch heels.

Stephen was enraptured.

With a shy giggle Molly asked playfully. “Are you coming in, or do you intend to stand out there all day?”

It was only once Molly had closed the door that Stephen picked up on her mild anxiety over her appearance. Capturing her capable hands in his much larger ones, he noted reverently. “You are beautiful, Molly Hooper.”

Molly’s cheeks flushed a delightful shade of pink, as she bestowed him with a smile that could have lit up the room. “You don’t look too bad yourself,” she responded in kind, before asking curiously. “So, where are we going?”

Letting go of one of her hands, Stephen reached inside his jacket pocket to retrieve his sling-ring.

THE NEW YORK SANCTUM – PRIVATE QUARTERS - DINING ROOM

The room they emerged into was a very grand affair. Dominated by a long dining table that was nearly as long as the room itself. Two high-backed chairs had been placed at either end of the table, where places had been set for a three-course meal.

Hanging from the ceiling was an enormous chandelier. The light it gave off was enough to ensure that the room was brightly lit.

Even though the walls were painted a rich brown, the doorframes, skirting boards excreta like the bedroom were painted gold, which helped bring warmth to the room.

Hovering at the far end of the table was the Cloak of Levitation. As Molly approached, it graciously moved her chair back so that she could sit.

Glancing over at Stephen who had taken his place at the other end of the table, Molly chuckled at his annoyed expression.

“I told you,” Stephen addressed the cloak through gritted teeth. “This was to be a romantic dinner, not a banquet.” With a graceful wave of his hand the Sorcerer Supreme transformed the room from extravagant, to cosy.

Though the colour scheme remained, the mood had gone from impersonal to intimate. They were now sat at a small, circular table, with the only light coming from the three candles in an antique candelabrum in the centre of the table.

Satisfied, Stephen indicated to the cloak that the serving of the meal could now commence.

During the first course their conversation centred on their medical backgrounds. But though Stephen easily regaled Molly with stories concerning the numerous medical breakthroughs he had accomplished, Molly was more reticent about going into any great detail of her profession.

Stephen observed her with kind eyes, immediately understanding her reluctance. “Discussion of dead bodies, their causes or the means of those deaths doesn’t faze me in the slightest, Molly,” he assured her. “I am a Doctor after all...”

The second course was spent with Stephen telling Molly of his many adventures since becoming the Sorcerer Supreme.

In return Molly talked about some of the cases she’d been involved with helping New Scotland Yard, and the world’s only Consulting Detective, Sherlock Holmes.

By the time dessert arrived Molly was curious about the relics like the Cloak of Levitation.

“So,” she asked as she observed the cloak. “What is the Cloak of Levitation’s purpose? Besides making you look exceedingly dashing.”

The Cloak of Levitation stood a little straighter at the praise.

Stephen rolled his eyes at the now preening relic.

“Some magic is too powerful to sustain, so we imbue objects with it, allowing them to take the strain we cannot.”

Molly watched Stephen’s expression change, taking note of the frown that now marred his brow and the deep sadness in his eyes as he silently reflected on the all too recent past.

Stephen sat in silent contemplation. The word’s he’d just spoken triggering a painful memory. He had regarded Mordo as a mentor, and a friend. His betrayal of all that they believed in still left a bitter taste in his mouth.

“What’s that?” Stephen asked, indicating the object in Mordo’s hand.

Mordo used the object to point at Stephen as he responded. “That’s a question.”

There was a brief moment of levity as both men grinned at each other. But then Mordo was once again all business as he explained the purpose of relics. “Some magic is too powerful to sustain, so we imbue objects with it, allowing them to take the strain we cannot.”

THE NEW YORK SANCTUM – DINING ROOM

It was clear that whatever the events Stephen was reliving were painful, and although Molly was unwilling to press him, confident he would tell her in his own time, she nonetheless felt the need to distract him.

“Stephen?”

The sound of Molly’s voice was enough to bring him back to the present. Determined to erase such unwelcome memories, Stephen got to his feet, before offering Molly his hand.

“I think we should have our coffee in a more comfortable setting, don’t you?” he suggested.

“That would be lovely,” Molly replied.

PRIVATE QUARTERS FOYER

From the dining room they made their way to the foyer of the living quarters. It was a wide, open area, painted a rich garden green that made the foyer lively and bright.

As they made their way up a flight of stairs, Molly paused every now and then to admire the paintings on the wall.

LIVING ROOM

They passed through the two large glass doors at the top of the stairs to the living room. The dark blue of the room, softened with the aid of several lamps, whose glow made the room more warm and inviting.

The wooden floor was edged in dark green, while within it was embossed with large square tiles in a simple, yet intricate pattern. Within the pale outer border was another, smaller square in brown. It was intersected by another square at a ninety-degree angle in orange. Within the area where the two squares intersected were eight triangles, alternating brown and orange. The design resembled the blades of an electric fan spinning around. The only floor covering came in the form of the large burgundy-coloured rug before the ornate black fireplace.

As she made her way into the room, Molly saw that to the left there was an arch-shaped doorway with a curved ascending stairway. There were a number of portraits on the curved walls, that she assumed were of the previous tenants. The stairway was also in blue, though of a slightly lighter hue.

In the corner between the main doorway and the archway was a circular wooden table, with two padded chairs on either side. On the wall nearest the archway were four drawings of Karmar Taj, while the other wall had one painting of a country scene with rows of trees.

On the other side of the room there was yet another arched doorway, where she observed a descending curved staircase. The rich burnished orange colour scheme was the only detail she could make out as Stephen led her over to the chairs by the fireplace.

Molly slipped off her high-heels and curled herself up in the comfy chair. “So where does that lead?” she asked, indicating the ascending curved staircase behind her.

“To my bedroom,” Stephen responded.

“And that one?” this time indicating the descending curved staircase leading off from the other side of the room.

“That leads to the guest’s quarters, should you…”

Molly got up, walking in stockinged feet to where Stephen sat. Leaning forward, she placed her hands lightly on his shoulders and looked him directly in the eye. “And if I don’t feel so inclined?” she asked. “What then?”

Stephen closed his eyes, releasing the breath he’d been holding. When his eyes opened again, the relief he felt was plain to see.

“Oh, Molly,” he murmured as he pulled her down onto his lap. “You would make me a very happy man indeed.”

Molly raised her lips willingly to his. But just as their lips met, a loud gong, which reminded Molly of the chiming of Big Ben rang out.

Stephen ended the kiss with obvious reluctance. Resting his forehead against Molly’s, he let out a resigned sigh as he gazed into her luminous brown eyes. “Duty calls.”

They’d just arisen from the chair when a man of Asian appearance entered the room. “The London Sanctum is under attack.”

“What…again?” Stephen exclaimed in exasperation.

Wong shrugged his shoulders by way of response.

Suddenly remembering his manners, Stephen quickly made the necessary introductions. “Molly, Wong. Wong, Molly.”

“Hello,” Molly said with a smile as she offered her hand.

Wong took her hand in his, before giving a slight bow, “A pleasure.”

Then it was back to the situation at hand.

“So what’s happened now?”

“I don’t know the details,” Wong replied. “But it can’t be good.”

“It never is,” Stephen responded with a resigned sigh.

In the blink of an eye Stephen’s attire changed from that of Stephen Strange the man, to Doctor Strange the Sorcerer Supreme.

Stephen had noticed Molly’s rather endearing tendency to chew on her lower lip whenever she was worried about something, just as she was doing right now.

He raised an enquiring eyebrow.

Molly raised her head so that her concerned gaze met his enquiring one head-on. She brushed her fingers over the front of his tunic, before reaching out to stroke the cloak. She let out a resigned sigh. “I just can’t bare the idea of you and this magnificent cloak being hurt or damaged. Sometimes I wish you’d been given a suit of armour, or something.”

Strange chuckled softly, “I believe you have me mistaken with Tony Stark.”

Molly frowned in obvious confusion, “Who?”

Stephen gave a self-deprecating shake of the head as he replied, “Never mind.” Then, ever so gently he leant down, brushing his lips against hers. “We’ll be careful, I promise.”

Using his sling-ring he and Wong jumped through the gateway, which immediately closed after them.

No sooner have Stephen and Wong departed than there was the sound of knocking.

Molly stayed where she was for a moment, uncertain what to do. But when it became apparent that no-one else was going to attend to the situation, she made her way cautiously from the sitting room down to the ground level.

SANCTUM FOYER

When Molly opened the front door to the New York Sanctum, she found a distinguished looking black man patiently waiting admittance.

Chapter 3: The Bill Comes Due

***

THE NEW YORK SANCTORUM – FRONT DOOR

Molly found herself entranced by the man standing before her; handsome, proud and serious were her initial thoughts as her gaze took in not only his good looks, but also the scars that further enhanced his features rather than detracting from them.

He was dressed similarly to Stephen, though his robes were dark green in colour. The tunic was belted and had a mandarin collar, while the trousers though close fitting allowed for ease of movement, while on his feet were a sturdy pair of boots.

Everything about the outfit spoke of fighting practicality, where one could go from being at peaceful rest one moment, to a readiness for combat the next.

It was only when the man began chuckling good-naturedly that Molly realised she had been staring.

“I’m so terribly sorry,” she apologised, her cheeks flushing a delightful shade of pink.

“That’s perfectly all right,” the man replied, his voice rich and pleasant. “I was hoping to have a word with Stephen, but I fear I’m interrupting,” he indicated Molly’s formal attire.

Molly looked down at herself. “Oh, right. No its fine. Stephen was just called away. Something he had to deal with urgently.”

“The responsibilities of the Sorcerer Supreme are never-ending,” the man agreed.

Molly now stepped back, satisfied that this was someone who knew Stephen well, a work colleague. “Why don’t you come in...” she paused, realising she didn’t know his name.

“Karl Mordo,” he supplied, offering her his hand.

“Molly Hooper,” Molly responded in kind as she shook his hand.

NEW YORK SANCTUM - FOYER

As soon as Mordo crossed the threshold, the Sanctum gave a massive shudder, alerting Molly that something was amiss.

But when she turned to Mordo in the hope he could give an explanation as to what was going on, she realised as she watched his friendly demeanour turn to one of vengeful hostility that she had been deceived.

LONDON SANCTUM

It resembled a fantasy, with a number of medieval turrets and an ornate archway that dominated its entranceway. An impressive looking building that was built on the corner of two city streets. But for all its finery, the four storey building still managed to blend in with those that surrounded it.

Like its New York and Hong Kong counterparts, its upper level was dominated by a large ornate window.

When Stephen and Wong emerged from the gateway into the London Sanctum’s interior, they found everything calm, no calamity of any kind in progress.

“I don’t understand,” Stephen stated, turning to Wong, who looked equally confused.

It was then that Stephen felt a sharp pain in his chest, in the region of his heart, and his face drained of all colour.

And he realised that they had been deliberately misled.

When they returned, Stephen’s worst fears were realised.

Molly had been taken.

Chapter 4: The Dark Dimension

THE DARK DIMENSION

Molly felt as though she had been sucked into an enormous, whirling kaleidoscope. Her senses were constantly under assault from the nauseating array of bright colours that flickered in and out of existence all around her.

Wherever she was, she sensed that it was very old, ancient, and not in a good way. There was a sickly sweet scent all around her that spoke of decay and disease. Combined with these was the unsettling feelings of unease and fear of an impending violence. She felt menace and dread all around her, it reached out to her, and if it hadn’t been for her abductor, Mordo holing her as securely as he did, Molly was certain that she would have been snatched up and dragged down into unknown, never-ending depths.

Just as she was beginning to wonder if this stomach-churning, chaos-inducing ride she had been unwillingly brought on was ever going to come to an end, a formidable, and gruesome to behold presence made itself known.

THE NEW YORK SANCTUM

“There’s only one person who would dare do this,” Stephen noted grimly.

Wong nodded. “Mordo.”

“The question is then, where would he take her?”

The Sanctum had been searched thoroughly, with no sign of Molly, and no clue as to where she had been taken.

Catching Wong’s worried expression the Master of the Mystic Arts quizzed his former teacher. “You know something.”

Again Wong nodded.

“What have you heard?”

“There were rumours going around that not only was Mordo stealing the powers from other sorcerers, but that he was offering himself as an agent to the highest bidder. The word was that his aim was to gain the attention, and favour of Dormammu,” Wong responded.

The irony of this disclosure was not lost on Stephen. “Then I guess I know where to begin my search.”

THE DARK DIMENSION

The figure was tall, the upper body alone was head and shoulders taller than Mordo. For this particular encounter he had chosen to appear in humanoid form.

Humanoid but by no means human.

The being possessed a skull-like head, with dark eyes that were barely visible in the deeply sunken eye sockets, while the nose was large but flat, and the lipless mouth though small, was cruel. Instead of hair the head was adorned by a crown of fiery shards that resembled a volcanic eruption.

The torso and arms were muscular, but there was no disguising the skeleton that remained visible through the translucent skin. Fiery spikes, sharp and dangerous, protruded from the upper arms and shoulders. The figure’s skin tone reflected the cloyingly forbidding colour scheme that surrounded them. The head: black, red and yellow. The torso: primarily blue and black with flecks of red and yellow. The arms: primarily blue and red with a hint of yellow.

This was Dormammu, Lord and Supreme Ruler of the Dark Dimension.
