On creating by hand

When was the last time you made something by hand?

These Christmas cards were made with watercolors, gel pens, and metallic marker. I was so anxious in the beginning. I didn’t feel like I knew what I was doing. I couldn’t decide on a design and spent countless hours wading through Pinterest looking for ‘inspiration’.

I didn’t need inspiration. I was already inspired simply because I wanted to make something. I had that itch to hold a paintbrush in my hands.

Inspiration is a vision. Having a vision means inspiration is already there, like a seed in the ground. All it needs is water to eventually bloom. For me, the water is always belief. Belief in myself, belief in my abilities, and belief in the process.

So in the beginning, I couldn’t create because I was sure the recipients would hate the cards no matter what I drew. I ruined two cards because of low self-confidence and a third card because of overcompensation.

When you’re nervous or trying too hard, it shows so prominently when you are creating with real pencils and real brushes. My hands weren’t shaking, but my confidence was. Your work is affected by how you approach it. I’ve seen some people talk in the art community about how they struggle with traditional art because of how ‘unforgiving’ mediums like ink or oil paints are.

But is the ink unforgiving or is it the artist who is unforgiving? Is the artist allowing themselves to make mistakes? Or is the artist looking at the ink or oils and, knowing there is no undo button, demands no errors?

Messing up the original cards was actually what I needed to figure everything out. I had to throw those cards away and yes, in a sense, they were a loss. I only had so many blank cards. But the mistakes were not ‘unforgivable’. I couldn’t have figured out what I wanted to create if I hadn’t created the bad art first.

The cards came together so easy after that. Some of the snowflakes are lopsided and the blue paint could be darker on others. But the point was not to create the most perfect hand-drawn Christmas cards ever. I accepted that every line doesn’t need to be perfect. It came from my hands therefore it is already a perfectly human and original creation. I forgave myself for even wanting perfection.

Astrology Observations-Part 2🌙

Having both Taurus and Aries placements in a chart can indicate someone who enjoys pressuring/embarrassing people when underdeveloped. These people can be actual bullies towards others when they’re at their worst.

Gemini rising’s/Mercury in the 1H look younger than they actually are.

Scorpio rising women are sometimes shorter than average while Scorpio rising men are taller than average.

8H moon’s can have dreams about scenarios that end up happening IRL.

Capricorn Rising’s usually have a skinny/bony appearance.

Whatever sign and house Saturn is in your chart can tell you what other people’s karma is for messing with you. Ex: Taurus Saturn in 7H? Taurus is a Venusian sign so it rules over beauty/appearance as well as luxury and money and the 7H signifies relationships, partnerships and marriage etc. Their karma may be their physical appearance looking uglier, plus going broke as well as their relationships/love life going downhill.

People with Scorpio in the 6H may prone to UTI’s/yeast infections or very heavy and painful monthly periods.

Cancer Rising’s may attract a lot of jealousy because of how intelligent they are (Gemini 12H)

Aries Rising men are usually buff and naturally muscular in appearance.

Aquarius in the 11H can attract multiple friend groups from all walks of life way more easily than the average person.

Pisces Moon/Venus are a lot more skilled in manifesting the things they want than they think they are.

TW!: Some underdeveloped Virgo men have a weird tendency to actually want to harm women mentally and emotionally. They’re not the type to just break up with a partner and move on, they usually want to make the breakup as fucked up as possible so the thought of them remains in the persons mind forever. I’ve met over 6 Virgo men who’s admitted to this before and the girl didn’t even do anything wrong in the relationship, they just didn’t wanna be with her anymore but didn’t want her to forget them.

Capricorn women usually have very long, flowing luscious hair.

i know people are good because of this: the universe often assigns me side quests. in a circular strangeness; despite my inability to locate my-own-anything, i am almost-always finding someone else's lost things. dogs, coats, phones, cash, laptops. it happens so often it's almost tiring; suddenly being looped into a tiny amount of detective work.

but when i'm with other people who are not used to this: the response is almost invariably delight. yes, maybe they are simply thrilled by the mystery. it's just... they light up so much. i think maybe more... i think they like the opportunity to do something kind.

a few weeks ago, i was at a bar and i found a wallet as soon as we stepped outside. i felt nervous to ask for help, worried i would be holding up the night. i picked it up and said go on without me, i should help this get back to its home.

instead, three people pulled out their phones - to find him on facebook, to help cancel his credit cards. two people went back into the bar to tell the bartender, two others went calling down the street. group texts, facebook posts, instagram stories. people, without even seeing what happened, start offering help to me. fifteen minutes and: someone knows someone who knows the guy. the cheer that went up - just for finding him, just for this small thing. someone gets him on the phone. strangers dance around me, hopping on their feet - are you the girl that found that wallet? good for you, that's a good thing you're doing/same thing happened to me and somebody did what you're doing and i thank god everyday for people like you/i can't believe you found him so fast this is so exciting

i gave it back to him in a parking lot. i watched his shoulders sag with relief. there was cash in it still - he checked the pocket, and then sheepishly held the money out to me. i didn't take it. i held up my hands. "it's no problem, man. i know you'd do the same for me."

i don't know him, to be honest. i don't know if he is the same kind of person i am. but he nodded at me.

and i know people are good. i know people are good, because the way this story ends isn't surprising. we wave goodbye awkwardly. my friend loops their arm around me.

"i can't believe we got it back to him," they said. "i'm going to be riding that high for weeks."

I'm working on a Secret Santa drawing. This isn't it. This is practicing workflow, technique, and strategy before I dive into the real picture. So far with digital painting, I've struggled with starting from scratch. Using a rough sketch drawn on paper as my base layer works a lot better for me.

There's still so much to figure out. I've been watching tutorials and reading books this week. It's like trying to drink from a firehose sometimes. All this free content, all these ways to educate yourself, and I get overwhelmed by choice.

I admire the work of so many digital painters that I'm finding it very hard to stop looking to their pictures for inspiration and reference all the time and come up with some original ones of my own. But painting in Photoshop is a mysterious process. I'm always wondering 'how did they do that' and 'how do I do that'.

Sometimes it's their style I think I'm fascinated by and not necessarily their techniques or tools. My traditional style is not fully formed and yet I know what I want my work to look like and there are definitely enough similarities across enough pieces that I can see the emergence of a style. It's not fully realized yet though, unfortunately.

I think this Secret Santa will be the first piece of my art I've given someone that's not in my family in more than 10 years.

I love the idea of teenage Malleus hating his new baby brother Silver but slowly falling for him

words cannot express how much I adore that Mal's reaction to seeing a human baby for the first time was "the fuck is this. why does it look like that. gross." (then he immediately got stuck on babysitting duty and the rest is history)

I am SUCH a sucker for that trope of "non-humans being fascinated by normal human behavior", so between that and all the delicious angst going on I was eating VERY well. >:) Malleus being so impressed that two-year-old Silver can walk, because it took him twenty years to stand on two legs! Lilia barging in on the Zigvolts at 2 AM being like "he won't stop crying what do I do"! Lilia trying to feed Silver rats and Malleus being like "...please just stick with what the books say to feed it"! it is all so. chef's kiss.
