FanFriday #3: Why are these pairs so rare?

Ah! Happy (belated) third FanFriday, folks. How’s your week been? Mine’s been ordinary, but okay!

This week was tricky. Really tricky. The theme was meant to be “the best of the riders and their dragons”, with focus solely on Astrid, Fishlegs, and the twins with each of their dragons respectively.

The results felt… barbarically slim, actually.

This week’s post will include more than just fic recommendations under the cut.

This image seems accurate. Not only to canon itself, but also in the fandom. Toothless and Hiccup at the forefront and the others in the back.

At the time of this post (8/10/23) the numbers for the tags I tried exploring (otp: true, English) are as follows:

As a fic writer myself, I understand that most of the inspiration for things will tend to come from Hiccup and Toothless, as the MCs, and Hookfang and Snotlout because… well, it’s Hookfang and Snotlout. Doesn’t get much more inspirational than that.

But still, the fact that other dragon-rider duos have nothing (nothing that at least gives some focus to the tag which just seems to be bunched in with others) is quite astonishing. By statistics alone, they’re each considered to be a rarepair.

How peculiar.

And, so, I implore you all to take a step back and perhaps write that fic you wanted to write. Meatlug and Fishlegs? Twins and Barf & Belch? Doesn’t matter – the fandom’s side of the archive is in desperate need for it. All of it.

And with that, I’ll shut it and continue with this week’s scarce selection:

When Sleep Won’t Come by AHeartForStories — This fic is the only otp: true, Stormfly & Astrid result that was complete. The other, currently left incomplete, is in my marked for later. That being said, it’s very strange that this is the case. Though just because it appears to be the only result for this pair doesn’t make the scenario any less wonderful. Astrid has a nightmare and seeks comfort from Stormfly: simple, sweet. What a delightful read.

Please by AHeartForStories — This author seems to pump out so many fics, it seems, that they must be doing half the work for us, and I applaud them, because the ones that I have read, personally, are quite wrenching of emotion. This is a good example – this is one of two Heather and Windshear fics that had appeared in the search results I’d tried; one is incorrectly tagged (as otp: true, Heather & Windshear – it’s by far more Dagur & Heather based, the former duo hardly get much focus). In this fic, Heather stands during a heartbreaking performance as Ryker abuses Windshear to get to her. The end is relieving, and for a short, angsty one-shot with these guys I’d definitely point you in this fic’s direction!

Nothing Else Matters by sarahenany — This fic for some reason passed by my radar for the first FanFriday, but it’s a great fic (plus it helps pad out the list a bit to the three-fic minimum). It takes place during that disappointingly cut scene where Hookfang is struck with lightning in season six. It’s a “hidden scene”-type fic where we see Snotlout tend to Hookfang when he’s been downed. It’s a dazzling gem of a choice for these two, because they are so sweet as is. Definitely in my Top 10 so far.

Toph for the character ask game 🪨

How I feel about this character

I love her so much. She's one of my favorites in the series. Toph is the Strong Female Character trope actually done right. She has a complex family history and she (along with Mai) is the perfect, wonderfully written, surprisingly well done character who represents what I like to call "toxic filial piety". I say she's surprisingly well done because she's written by a Western team. So far she and Mai from the same show are the only accurate and fully fleshed characters written for a Western audience that I can think of that embody the complexities of filial piety, which is a concept that generally does not exist in the West. I could give honorable mentions to Azula and Zuko, but imo Toph and Mai...wow. Toph's problems with her family are particularly notable because they are all completely avoidable. They were done as a conscious choice.

I don't particularly ship Toph with anyone. She's free to go where she goes. Although, I do have a fondness for her and Sokka.

My unpopular opinion about this character

I'm not sure if this is unpopular or not, but I think she was right for wanting to reconcile with her parents, and I also think she was right for distancing herself from them even after the fact.

One thing I wish would happen / had happened with this character in canon.

That she got her field trip with Zuko. Don't get me started. I felt so teased.

2022 Wrapped

Oof, it's already 2023, isn't it? Oh, well.

Post the top 5 works you're most proud of that you released in 2022 (not necessarily your most popular)

it's gonna be 4 now lol.

persist and resist the temptation to ask you - this one is perhaps the most authentic, soul-pouring fic i've ever written. and the one i'm most proud of because of my growth in writing prose and pacing overall. there were many times i would huddle with a blanket in a dark room (💀) simply because of how much i was feeling in the moment. it was the most visceral experience i've had writing so far.

like passing notes in secrecy - i would say that when i finished persist, i was in this writing craze/high in that i simply wanted to write anything since i finally felt like i was on a roll, but that wouldn't do this fic - and my work - justice. because persist was so angsty, i desperately needed to write something that was light and fluffy in consequence for my own sake. i'm very happy about the banter and humor i was able to apply to this OTP; it was pure serotonin, and i hope it was the same for others.

Midnight - my first hinny smut!! aka i took my headcanon of switch!hinny and really ran with it. though i no longer have the same exact headcanon about the two of them, i'm still really proud of how steamy this turned out. and i have a feeling all the private bookmarkers do too 👀

you knew that i'm a mastermind, and now you're mine - man, the sheer power tswift holds on all fic writers everywhere. the aim was to use this song ("mastermind") in irony to show how the wizarding world perceives ginny relative to her relationship with harry. and because ginny is such a force of nature, she and the press manage to come to a certain albeit amusing level of agreement (a true mastermind har dee har). it's a bamf character moment for her, and she owned every second of it.

your top 4 current WIPs that you're excited to release in the new year

you reminded me to open up my google docs for the first time in a month! phewww.

premed hinny!rivals to lovers fic - snippet here. my final fuck you (and extremely reluctant thank you) to undergrad in the form of my OTP. fic is fully outlined and ready to be written if only i could give it the time of day 😭. but now that i have a lot of time opened up for me in the next several months, i'll finally get to it! fingers crossed

anniversary hinny smut - hinny roleplays as strangers in a bar, and let's just say we'll stick the art of acting to the shitty movies. a whole ass page written so far, so i take that as a win!

a somewhat angst, somewhat crack fic... i uh... have the most written for this wip so far of all my wips and im both proud and mortified by that. let's just say it's a story of how hinny finds themselves back to each other postwar... and the path is not exactly a straight route. playlist is a wip as well.

another crack fic because apparently that's all @takearisk-ao3 and me are on... though it's more accurate to say i helped to brainstorm and Hannah, the brilliant Executioner. to quote Hannah's post... "no comment."

im adding a fifth one because why not. hinny!vampire au. though there's only been half a page written for it so far, and hence a lot of white space, im so, so ready for the tools of creativity to lead me to more crackheadery that ive yet to discover. (like i needed more to start with.)

your top 3 biggest improvements in your writing over the past year

i think my writing comes off a bit "cleaner" now? there's more of a coherent plot, resolution to my fics than most of the simple "slices of life" that i wrote more of last year.

i'd like to think the dialogue comes off more natural now too. im finally getting the hang of doing more "showing" than telling and implementing symbolism and metaphors when trying to display a broader theme/concept.

im able to sit with fics and be at ease with the fact that im not going to have the right answer immediately. that i have to wait before i can post to make it better. i started prioritizing quality over mass production - and while this is still something i struggle with a lot of the times - i feel like this is a bit of a step up from last year. and most importantly, i learned that rewrites - not just editing - may be necessary too, and that is okay. that does not make me a bad writer but (hopefully) a thoughtful one.

your top 2 resolutions (ways you wish to improve your writing/blog) for the new year

to not constantly compare myself to other people's writing. focus on how i can improve myself without being intimidated by all the works of the many amazing writers in the fandom. to finally put words on the page fearlessly and authentically, like i felt i did with persist.

to take more risks. keep putting my characters in uncomfortable situations and testing out how they can grow from them. to not feel limited in my writing just because in my young age i havent experienced them. to push my boundaries more. (i thank @fairsquare16 @takearisk-ao3 and @narukoibito for encouraging this and the first goal every single time i feel even the slightest bit down about it; they're also the reason im still entertaining all these crackfics so put the blame on them when they eventually come out)

and your number 1 favorite line you've written this year

my fucking answer to this changes every two seconds...not for any other reason except that it's my biggest conspiracy theory that i have early, early onset dementia and can't for the life of me remember. here's one for now:

Like the story, the moral is just as simple: love unconditionally, act irrevocably. One shouldn't fear wearing their heart on their sleeve if the alternative is to never plant, water, and bathe it with the light of day.

After all, what are mistakes if not signs to grow?

favorite thing about her: her determination!!! she's so fucking stubborn when she wants to get something done, and she'll find a way to reach her goal no matter what! we have chosen to stan forever.

least favorite thing about them: how aware i am that i would not be able to stand her energy irl lmao like i love her a lot but anyone who tries to wake me up early the one time a month i get to sleep in WILL be killed

brOTP: leslie x ron were always my fave friendship of the show, even before their epic scene in the last season

OTP: benslie is love, benslie is life. it's the healthiest relationship i've ever seen depicted on a TV show, and it's refreshing that they didn't destroy that for the sake of comedy like it happens so often (monica x chandler in friends, barney x robin in himym... i could go on)

nOTP: i guess anything that's not leslie x ben? i didn't like her with the cop dude, although he was funny. they never felt half as genuine and soft and perfect as benslie did from the very beginning

random headcanon: she tried being a supportive spouse and reading ben's star trek fanfiction once, thought it was cool but whatever yk, until ben joked that there probably were fanfic authors who wrote US historical figures fics out there. it was the beginning of a VERY long summer where leslie posted about 30 historically accurate M to E rated works on ao3, 2 of which were over 100k words multichapters. ben, half horrified and half impressed, commented dutifully on each chapter, even getting into virtual fights with rightists (is that a word?) who called leslie names bc they disagreed with the politics aspects of her fics, and even though nothing beats that actual real life punch he once threw to defend her honor, his internet chivalry effectively turned her on still. they had a short but intense reign as ao3's most productive power couple before the triplets came back from chris and ann's for school and they had to focus on their parenting roles + her presidential campaign again.

unpopular opinion: idk how unpopular it is, but there was never a doubt in my mind that she's the president at the very end of the series?? like ik they left a doubt there on purpose, but seriously, does anyone really think leslie's story ends with her being the first lady and not the fucking president when it's been her dream forever?? how rude can the universe be

Okay, I've been meaning to do this post for a while - you know how sometimes you're listening to a song, totally innocent and unrelated, and all of a sudden WHAM it hits you that this song (the lyrics OMG the LYRICS) are just So Your Blorbo/OTP?

Yeah, that.

Anyway, may I present:

(arguably one of my most favorite Bond songs)

And now let's get to what hit me about this song and Helena Wells:

Helena explains her time machine and how it works with, among other things, with this:

I'd become intrigued by the idea of Gestalt, the collective unconscious. What if one were able to connect with the mind of someone who lived centuries ago?

We also know that she was conscious while in the Bronze - and I've always wondered: what if her unattached consciousness were able to join the collective unconscious through there? (which in and of itself is a different essay)

And then when I heard "I've seen your smile in a thousand dreams", it hit me: what if she saw glimpses of Myka, while in the Bronze? What if, among the millions of minds she touched only ever just once, there was this one mind, this one person, that her consciousness kept coming back to. Because "it always seemed you loved me". And oh, how starved Helena is for love. Imagine seeing glimpses of Myka's smile, again and again, and feeling like the owner of that smile loves you, loves you, loves you-

And then you get unbronzed and maybe, among the million things you need to do... maybe you search, with half an eye, every now and then, when the opportunity presents itself, because heaven forbid you devote important time on that but oh how you dream of love-

And then you tell yourself it doesn't matter, it's just a pipe dream, you are not made for love, you are made for oblivion, yours and that of the entire human race-

And then you run into her and realize you're on opposite sides.

And you try. Oh how you try, tro wrestle your life away from the tracks you yourself have set it on, to stop hurtling towards oblivion and start turning towards that smile, that touch, that love. And you have read enough tragedies to know that it is impossible, you know that ink with which you have mapped out your plan is indelible, but you try-

Now. The only part of the lyrics I have beef with is that concept of someone else completing you - but! Hear me out: Sometimes, someone comes into your life and- doesn't complete you, no, but offers you an insight into yourself that makes a lot of things suddenly make sense.

The italicized "oh."

And while the song started out to be a Helena Wells song, suddenly we're in Myka's head: the head of someone who, faced with the fact that H.G. Wells is a woman (nice catch there, agent), that she is this woman, who faced with all this starts processing, starts realizing, starts making connections between new input and old memories, and oh.

Oh.

So let's say Myka has had dreams too - just snatches, glimpses, a smile here, a touch there, the elation of two like minds connecting, the heady rush of being lifted to the sky, none of them remembered in the morning - but oh how they come charging in now, now that she is faced with H.G.-Wells-is-actually-a-woman.

But Agent Myka Bering is not one to trust her dreams - hell no. Facts only, please, hard, observable, ideally peer-reviewed facts- but here is this woman, is H.G. Wells, this woman out of her time, this smile she's seen in a thousand impossible dreams, this touch she's felt that always seems so-

Facts.

Facts only, please.

But maybe, just mabye, among the million things she needs to do, maybe she can make time for the owner of that smile, maybe she can indulge in the thought that the purveyor of that touch isn't all evil, maybe there is a dream that might come true someday-

And she tries.

hello pleaseeee i need to know all ur thoughts on bunny/andrew i literally saw the one post u had on them yearsssss ago and i became so invested with the possibilities and i think ur the only other person who is also invested in it? literally every other person ive talked to about the charioteer doesn't get it like not really and theres no content dor ot out there zero nothing idk i think it has sm potential but ig no one else sees it (i think i might be kinda out of it rn bc im just realising this sounds a bit insane but god. i rlly do want to talk about andrew/bunny with wnother person)

Oh my GOD HELLO!!!

So fair warning I am going to go absolutely bananas at you because I have zero faith in my ability to be coherent about this ship, but PLEASE let me know your thoughts on Bunny/Andrew, they started as a laugh but now they're the OTP and I would love to know your thoughts

(Me explaining the layers of Bunny/Andrew)

So insane statement number one: what I love about Bunny and Andrew is how dialectical they are. Pure perfect yin yang of a couple, mirror images in every way.

While Ralph and Andrew are often described this way, I don't think that's entirely accurate- they are actually extremely similar characters, both physically (blonde, light eyed) and in bearing, both are 19 when Laurie first kisses them. But where Andrew is young and seemingly untouched by life's troubles (SEEMINGLY, he is very much touched), his clear eyed pragmatism becomes cynical pessimism in Ralph, who's been beaten, isolated, and damaged.

Where Andrew and Ralph are continuous, bleeding into each other in Laurie's narrative, Andrew and Bunny are polar opposites. Andrew is not consciously gay, pure, virtuous, honest to a fault. Bunny is overtly self-consciously gay, indulgent, gossipy, mean spirited, totally willing to fight dirty. If Andrew is untouchable, Bunny is getting his handprints all over him. And the way they come together!! Although Andrew and Laurie have kissed and begun to talk about things, it's Bunny storming up to Andrew and yelling "I FUCKED YOUR CRUSH WHAT ARE YOU GOING TO DO ABOUT IT" that really makes it real, that brings blood into it. Andrew awakens to his sexual identity through his love for Laurie, but it's jealousy of "Ralph"/Bunny that pulls the trigger!

Just excerpting the part of Andrew's letter that deals directly with Bunny's interaction with him.

I want you to know it is true if he says that when I hit him it wasn’t even self-defense. There is a belief, which I expect he shares, that a pacifist who has behaved like this must see at once his ideas were wrong. I should have thought there could hardly be a better way of proving they were right. But if that were all I had to tell you, of course I could have written days ago.

...Well, about Ralph. He isn’t like I imagined, so I found it hard to picture you and him as great friends. When he told me it was much more than that, I felt—I don’t know a better way of expressing this—as if I’d had an anonymous letter. I got one once, after my Board. It is like something from another world, but it has touched you, and the touch is real. So then he said why did I pretend to be shocked when I was only jealous; and that was when I hit him.

He didn’t hit me back, he just laughed and walked off. He had a right to. I knew before he was even out of sight that there could be only one reason for what I did. What he had said about me was true. He wanted to see what I would do, I suppose, and I did what he expected. But it taught me something. The thing you want to kill is really in yourself. That is why people become cruel in war, because they are doing what I did.

Screaming, howling, recognition of the self through other, etc. Me fighting the sleepies to elaborate on these thoughts, that essentially come down to the lack of animus Andrew holds towards Bunny, despite everything, and the insight suggested here that Bunny's bad behavior is driven more by jealousy, fear, and loneliness then malice.

Anyway anyway ANYWAY the insane Andrew Epic I AM still working on it WILL be done one day has really come to focus on Bunny/Andrew in resolving what does it mean to be faithful?

Ok, so starting at the beginning of the outline- Andrew is working as a stretcher bearer in London during the Blitz. He runs into Bunny, who he still thinks is Ralph, and attempts to reconcile with him. Bunny is still bitter and heartbroken, and continues messing with him, ultimately culminating in Andrew losing his virginity in a very awkward hook up Andrew is wrestling with the very serious question I will purposefully phrase humorously, "How do I have gay sex in a god honoring way?" and Bunny is driven absolutely apoplectic by the perceived hypocrisy of this, and by Andrew continuously coming back to him no matter how catty he gets. As they start to build a real relationship, Bunny starts to realize he's in too deep and worries if he reveals he's not really Ralph Lanyon, Andrew will leave him.

There is a LOT of middle plot I have outlined and partially written- Andrew goes on the front lines with the ambulance service as he writes about and loses contact with Bunny for a time (Bunny gives him a whole song and dance about censors and military intelligence, rather than trying to explain why he can't address letters to Ralph Lanyon), they reconnect after the war and try and make a go of it, but it gets way to real and intense for Bunny, who gets skittish and walks out without telling Andrew anything. Andrew freaks out, fearing that "Ralph" has been arrested or killed, and encounters homophobia when he tries to file a missing person report on his "roommate". After talking with Dave, he goes to serve in a mission hospital in Kenya (fun facts, there are more Quakers in Kenya then anywhere else in the world, and I am actively debating how much to get into about the late colonial atrocities that occured there at this time period).

In 1950ish, Andrew once more runs into Bunny, and is so relieved to see him alive and well that it shocks Bunny, who assumed he'd be furious if they ever saw each other again. Bunny successfully dodges questions, continuing to pass himself off as Ralph- at first justifying it to himself by saying he doesn't want to ruin Andrew's relief or his memories, that he wants to let him down gently this time, etc, but he keeps putting off either breaking off with him or telling him the truth because he likes the escape from being himself, likes the way it feels to be loved by Andrew, tries to pretend he's not in love himself. Bunny is genuinely frustrated by Andrew's increasingly public role as a peace/nuclear disarmament activist, the potential scrutiny it could attract, the judgment he feels compared to Andrew's high moral standards, etc. Andrew is genuinely annoyed with "Ralph"'s caginess, his refusal to commit or meet Andrew's friends or introduce Andrew to his, etc.

In 1960, something genuinely bad happens to Bunny- he's outed in some way and is arrested/fired, I'm working out the details. He has nothing left but the half-life he's been maintaining with Andrew. At this point it comes to a head, and Andrew finds out the truth. He's initially completely broken by the news and is heartbroken and furious that the man he's been in love with for almost 20 years has never once told the truth, has never even told him his name... But then. The reframe. Andrew has always expected things from Bunny, but Bunny just wanted Andrew to be himself. Andrew has been living his own life, regardless of how it made Bunny feel, while Bunny willingly gave up his entire identity to be with Andrew. Is Andrew a hypocrite, or does he love Bunny unconditionally, regardless of who he is or what he's done? Who is really the faithful one, Andrew who has only ever had one lover, or Bunny who kept coming back, trusting in Andrew even though he had no reason to?

As Andrew tries to articulate this, Bunny things he's given his lover a nervous breakdown and sticks him in the bath with a glass of whiskey and calls Alec to calm him down.

At that point they're able to have a real, honest relationship. Andrew brings Bunny to the meeting and comes out- he gets disfellowshipped for his troubles, but takes it sanguinely because "God knows I love you." The notoriety he gets here puts him in touch with "like-minded" Quakers, I have a reconciliation between them, Ralph, and Laurie, it'll be cozy.

But yeah, these are all the thoughts about Bunny/Andrew I can gather tonight. Normal people project normal trauma onto their blorbos, I've got an unpublished word doc that is half gay sex half narrativized commentary on the Letter to the Romans 😂

But please please PLEASE let me know your own thoughts- the TLDR about all this blathering is I love the contrast between Andrew and Bunny, the potential for drama, and how Andrew in canon is most himself when faced with adversity and the natural challenges Bunny would bring would depend and mature his character, while I think Andrew could be an affectionate, patient lover who could be really good for Bunny's insecurities. What do you think could draw these two together??

(Also I headcanon Bunny's name is Barnaby Botts. Horrible name he refuses to go by, Barnaby shortens to Barney shortens to Bunny, AND I initially picked Barnaby just for the connection to Bunny but then I remembered if means the son of comfort or in Greek son of the Paraclete and the part of my brain responsible for drawing insane religious parables all over these two had a field day with that.)

favorite thing about them: LITERALLY WHERE DO I EVEN START. She's one of my top ten protagonists of all times. I love the lessons she learns, the way she learns them, I love watching her grow and struggle and thrive. I love her so so so much. To keep things simple(ish) I will say that my favorite thing about Luz (which I've mentioned once or twonce before) is that she's an objectively cringey, very ND coded kid who's still given the utmost love and respect from the narrative. She gets to be objectively fucking uncool and this story still loves her. And it's nice it makes me feel loved by proxy

least favorite thing about them: I mean, I'd say in season 1 it's the tendency to flatten the boiling isles and it's people into 2 dimensional tropes for easily comprehension, but that's also one of my favorite flaws of Luz and the narrative always makes an interesting point out of this attitude. Maybe it's the suicidal ideation bc it really scared me the first time I watched thanks to them. I knew nothing bad was gonna happen (within reason), this is Disney, but I was like DAMN THEY'RE GOING THERE!!!

favorite line: okay I actually cannot in good conscious choose one bc my friend once informed me that me and Luz just. Talk the same. Same silly idioms and phrases same whimsical expressions and syntax same humour, etc etc. It's a chicken egg situation and do not know who started it but I know that it's frighteningly accurate. So I'll just go for the safe classic "the only thing I've ever really wanted was to be understood" bc. Y'know. Best moment in the whole show and everything

random headcanon: she played guitar when she was younger! The one in the basement belonged to Manny and he'd sit her on his lap and show her simple chords and riffs. She got a ukulele so she could practice. Then when Manny died she fell off playing it bc it felt wrong doing it without him, even though she still played uke sometimes. She picks it back up though during the season 3 timeskip and post canon! Also she was born in New York and lived there til she was 2/3, at which point she moved around a few states until landing in Connecticut at the age we see in the thanks to them video diaries (I wanna say 7 or 8?)

unpopular opinion: I also think Luz gets characterized as more bitter/vengeful/surly than she really is, especially in fics set around season 3. She wants to be happy, to have fun with her friends, she just feels like doesn't deserve it. Also I low-key think Luz is like. A genius. Just in an unconventional way. She rediscovered a lost form of magic and then taught herself it all on her own. She probably struggles with long division but I mean it when I say she is literally a genius imo

grimora for the ask game !!

Favorite thing about them: I feel like this is cheating because it’s so niche but I love the skeleton hand that rings the bell in the Finale (honestly Grimora’s whole aesthetic in the finale is phenomenal but if I had to narrow it down to one detail it would be that). Also a very small detail but I like how in her idle animations her hands are always folded over her abdomen; reminds me of the way people are laid to rest in coffins and really cements her undead status for me.

Least favorite thing about them: I wish she had some/more lines talking about her subordinates. We really don’t get to know much about how she feels about them which is sad. (I’d say the whole “killing everyone” thing too but… I don’t completely blame her on that one—similar to the other Scrybes’ Batshit Machinations, I can see why she felt like she needed to do it. Not to mention she didn’t technically succeed so I’ll give her a pass (I say that jokingly but holy shit did it catch me off-guard in my first playthrough))

Favorite line: This bit in her boss fight. Absolutely insane mechanic (just killing all of your cards but instead of the PG “turn them into gold” she just casually hands you back their lifeless bodies. Also pretty good foreshadowing in hindsight).

brOTP: I’ve seen a couple of works where Grimora has Royal as her right-hand man and they both get to be pirates together and you guys are absolutely correct. They should get to explore the high seas (or at very least I’d like to imagine Royal spins a lot of tales about his time when he was alive—a lot of which are pretty exaggerated—and she listens and makes sure to write them down regardless).

OTP: Her and any/all of the other Scrybes. She deserves better but the other three immortal shitheads she has to share an archipelago with will have to suffice. I’d say they’re all divorced but that’s probably putting it too simply. It’s more accurate to say they’re all fighting to see who’s the best at inventing a brand new type of complicated relationship. They’re all winning.

(I’ve also seen her paired off with the Woodcarver—not my thing personally, but I think it’s cute)

nOTP: Haven’t seen any Grimora ships that I don’t like honestly. But again I’m not super into shipping so that might be part of why this category has been blank the past couple of times—I’m not seeing many ships so there’s not any for me to report on.

Random headcanon: The dead can’t really “sleep” (and don’t really need to)—they just sort of “fall prone” into a state where they don’t really rest and don’t dream. As a result, a “sleeping” Grimora just looks like a corpse… more like a corpse than usual, anyway (she already rarely breathes and her heartbeat is so slow the event sometimes surprises her, but you know, completely lifeless). This would be disconcerting for the other Scrybes if not for her other far more concerning physiological traits. Like the first time she came to a meeting with her head in her hands—literally—and a needle and thread to sew it back on while the others talked. Not much got done that day.

Unpopular opinion: As much as I wish she did get more screentime I can see why that wasn’t really possible. Inscryption is already a pretty long game as-is, adding a whole card segment for Grimora—while it would be fun DLC—isn’t really feasible in the base game. Having said that, I do still wish we got to know a little more about her, even if it was just via some lines from her subordinates.

Song I associate with them: My knee-jerk is Necromancin Dancin by Bear Ghost just because it’s a batshit ridiculous villain song about the undead (she deserves to be a little more unhinged than how she gets portrayed by a lot of people; just look at the other Scrybes), but for something a little more fittingly melancholic I’d go for Grave Digger by Blues Sarcaceno or Dance While the Sky Crashes Down by Jason Webley.

Character ask: The Ghost of Christmas Past (A Christmas Carol)

Favorite thing about them: The gentle wisdom with which it guides Scrooge through his past, subtly coaxing him toward important realizations about his current life.

Also, the fact that it's so deliciously strange, eerie, and ethereal – seeming young and old at the same time, with muscular arms yet "most delicate" legs, its costume featuring both winter holly and summer flowers, and constantly changing shape as its light flickers, so that it's sometimes a disembodied head, sometimes a headless body, sometimes has no legs, sometimes has twenty, etc. It's a very effective symbol of memory, and how it encompasses so many things and constantly shifts and flickers in the mind. And since it's virtually impossible to adapt, this means we get an interesting wide array of different portrayals of the Ghost in different screen and stage adaptations – some male, some female, some young, some old, some human, some not-so-human – which adds freshness to each new retelling.

Least favorite thing about them: The fact that Dickens's surreal, otherwordly description of this Ghost is so impossible to capture in screen adaptations. Only one version – Richard Williams's 1971 animated short – has even come close to depicting it accurately. While I do enjoy seeing all the different creative approaches to the character, none are as fascinating as the original.

Three things I have in common with them:

*I believe it's important to remember the past to create a good present and future.

*I tend to be gentle, or at least I try to be.

*I love revisiting happy memories of past holidays.

Three things I don't have in common with them:

*I'm not a weird, insubstantial ghost.

*I can't time-travel.

*I very rarely wear white (it stains too easily).

Favorite line:

When Scrooge is afraid of falling as they're about to exit his room through the window:

"Bear but a touch of my hand there [on his heart], and you shall be upheld in more than this."

When it notices Scrooge crying at the sight of the countryside where he grew up:

nOTP: Probably any human.

Random headcanon: It was the first of the three ghosts to agree to Jacob Marley's request that they visit Scrooge. The other two were reluctant at first, because the Ghost of Christmas Present only knew the current nasty Scrooge, while the Ghost of Christmas Yet to Come only knew his destiny (as it was before he changed it) to die alone and unmourned. But the Ghost of Christmas Past knew the goodhearted, lonely child and idealistic young man he once was and felt sympathy for him, so it agreed to pay the visit right away and helped to persuade the others too.

Unpopular opinion: I think Dickens meant this ghost to be masculine-presenting, not androgynous or genderless. Yes, he calls it "it," but he uses the same pronoun for all the ghosts, including the clearly masculine Marley and Ghost of Christmas Present. He describes it as like a cross between a child and an old man, and Scrooge addresses it as "sir" when they first meet. That said, its status as the strangest and most ethereal of the ghosts does make it come across as the least gendered, and its touch is described as being "as gentle as a woman's hand," so I don't mind when adaptations cast a woman or a young girl in the role.

i kinda get and kinda dont get what you mean when you say dragonfru1t is most likely to be canon? like i get they have a lot of interactions but i think its more accurate to say no ships will be canon, flying bark seems to really steer away from romance in their shows (glitch techs, rotmnt, 100% wolf). the company seems to super focus on platonic bonds and found family as a whole

I’m assuming this is coming from these tweets I sent recently out of frustration with some “my ship isn’t the most popular one!!” whining I saw going on so I’ll add a screenshot for anyone who’s curious about the full context here:

Just to help clarify right off the bat, my main point of bringing Dragonfruit up was to say that, if I were to be one of those people who genuinely felt I needed to ship the most “analytically “cOrReCt” ship”, I would be shipping Dragonfruit and Dragonfruit alone.

Yet here I am with Spicynoodles as my OTP (despite Dragonfruit being my first ship of the series and the one that I have the most AMV’s about as well as still being a ship I enjoy because I am a multishipper)

Because I’m not held down by the bitter bs of when I was a teenager thinking I had to be “Right” in how I approached things that are meant to be for fun. Like shipping in fandom. (See also - my whole rant towards those people who were whining about how “If all you do when you take in media is look for ways to ship in it, you are objectively missing out and thus are bad and stupid”)

To answer your questions:

My main point that I didn’t have the character space for in regards to “Which is most likely to become canon” would be better worded as “If any ship was in the running of possibly being canon, it would be Red Son x Xiaojiao/Mei.“

While I am of the opinion that - similar to my hot take that the LBD host does NOT need to become a major character - this series does not have enough time to waste on dealing with the complications romance would bring to a story already focused on complicated platonic relationships, I still can’t ignore the simple fact that the only couple that has the most on-screen reasoning AND out-of-universe meta elements lined up to make them canon is Dragonfruit.

(See also - my reasoning why “What Makes It Complicated” will never have romance in it outright. The story is about complicated relationships with those you care about but fear you SHOULDN’T care about despite their best efforts via Wukong and Kumi, and adding romance to it would muddy the whole thing up in ways I have no reason to put the audience through)

I haven’t seen anything else of Flying Bark’s unfortunately (please don’t suggest Rise to me. I do not care for TMNT. It has NEVER appealed to me in any iteration. I’ve seen clips from Rise already. Animation looks other worldly. The show’s not for me.) but I am definitely willing to take your word for it that they don’t include romance in their work.

My opinion that Dragonfruit is the most likely ship to become canon comes with a giant “IF” in front for “IF there is going to be ANY ship that becomes canon”.

And for the last question:

Yes and I would hate it and that’s exactly why I am in love with how Calabash shut down my nemesis before they could even get off the ground.

“Main guy should always get with main girl!” is the source of so much shipping drama - even when people don’t realize that that’s exactly what their “But they have the most screen time together!” arguments are based on - and more for more than one ship war that I have seen for myself and I am glad to have that explicitly avoided.

If someone still ships them, that’s fair.

I still ship spicynoodles despite, as I’ve said, there’s not a whole lot of in-universe reasons to see them as “correct” analytically speaking.

I’m just relieved to have avoided “Main Guy x Main Girl just ‘cause” arguments being thrown around in fights.

How I Score 120 on Duolingo

It was on the first December 2022 I had a Duolingo English Test. Actually I have an IELTS test score for 6,5, but due to the fact that my desired university is no longer accepting IELTS for that score, I had to take another English proficiency such as Duolingo, considering that it’s the cheapest test for the University that I am pursuing.

I planned to take the test in the middle of November actually. But because of my lack self management, I had to postpone the test for the better result. I study harder and harder, and at December 4, 2022 I had the Duolingo test. Surprisingly, I got 120! Wooo, amazing. It’s like 7.0 IELTS by the way. Alhamdulillah!

So here are some key points to take for those who are struggling with Duolingo right now:

Join the Duolingo Community on Facebook

A warm-hearted Duolingo teacher, Luke, has a super amazing group for those pursuing Duolingo. If you want to get the high score for this test, it’s an obligation for you to join this group. Just open your FB and type Duolingo English Test, and the group will be appeared. In that group, you can look for any priceless link, information and circle taking Duolingo. Hand the Duolingo Core Material

Unlike IELTS or TOEFL IBT that has a official book that can be accessed by the students, Duolingo has no official material that you can access. So the one and only way to learn how to get the desired score for Duolingo is by learn it in Youtube or FB Group. Internet is an amazing tool for you look for all of the information that you want. However, I use this link to enhance my skill in Duolingo. It’s free and complete as it consists of writing, speaking, reading and any other skills tested in Duolingo. Taking free practice tests at least 10x

Duolingo provides a mini test for users who will take this test. It’s free by the way, and based on my colleagues, the score given in this free test is relatively accurate. Sounds good! In my case, I had taken this free test for 15x as I remember. I had this mini test everyday from the middle of November to the D Day. Quite thoughtful I felt, but yaaa, that was the process that I had to take. Every I finished the mini-test, I record it in Notion to help me observe how my progress was. I put the table I mention in the end of this writing. It was super meaningful for me by the way, since it has always been reminding me how I took efforts for this test 😵.

Take a Guruly Try Out

If you have considered that you are ready enough for taking the test, I suggest you to take a final try out on Guruly. It’s a website for taking a full English try out such as IELTS, TOEFL, and definitely Duolingo. If you had a lot of exercise in mini test provided by Duolingo, it’s you time to take the full test of Duolingo in Guruly. It takes one hours test as the time you have to allocate for Duolingo test. However, Guruly wants your WA number for OTP code when joining its website. Soo, if you think that it’s not a big problem, just do it. I personally didn’t have any problem after 1 month registering the website.

Take The Test in a Quite Room

Beside you have to make sure that you are energized enough for the test, you also need to consider what time you will take the test. A noisy room will totally distract your concentration taking the test. I took that test at 20.30 in my home, considering that in at the time I mentioned, usually my home is relatively quite. However, my prediction was false, some noisy vehicle passed my home, it’s totally distract me actually. But, finally I got it!

So those are some key points to take that I recommend to you before taking the Duolingo Test. Hopefully you can get your desired score too!

I have been posting TurGre headcanons and arts in my main blog @sometimecatsometimenot which mostly depicted the ship in their delight side. However, as someone who like historical Hetalia and usually read history, I feel that only the delight side cannot complete the whole picture of their relationship, because the truth is this two guys have one of the most complicate relationship of the entire world, and the most of the relationship aren’t that delight. That is the reason why I make another blog for putting headcanons and arts that depict the gloomier and darker side of their story.

For history and other information, I only rely on English sources because it is the only language I can understand beside my mother tongue. Although I also read the source from both sides (which many times have different viewpoint/ description for the same event) they are also English sources, which may give less or different detail from the sources written by local languages.

I first entered Hetalia fandom since 2008 and after my absence since 2018 I came back to the fandom again in 2021. My interested are about 60% Historical/cultural/political Hetalia and 40% whatever cool Hetalia.

My OTP : TurGre - Sadık (hwsTürkiye) x Herakles (hwsGreece) 🧿 They are also my most favorite characters. I mostly prefer this ship with historical/cultural-relate story/AU. I also love their human or fantasy AU as well.

Other favorite ships : Ranneshi (hwsNetherland x hwsIndonesia), Gerita, GerPru, Spamano, USUK (Supposed to say hwsAmerica x hwsEngland), Dennor, RusSme or Amerus, SpaPort or PortSpa

I like to define my ships by Japanese style definition : fixing Top (left) x bottom (right), and I rarely reverse characters’ position of my favorite ships. However, I have no NOTP, and I do not hate any ship.

I do not hate any Hetalia characters.

I rarely make WFSN art/fic of Hetalia, and if I happen to make one, I won’t post it here. However, I have no problem with seeing or reading WFSN art/fic at all.

I like watching films from India - mostly famous films of Bollywood and Tollywood.

I had temporary been into SPN family, Fannibal, OPM (One punch man) fandom. I watch every Star wars life-action movies and most of life-action Series of the franchise. I love Disney & Dreamworks animation.

Gremlin omnicrafter who just wants her friends to be safe! She's been there from the very beginning and I am pretty sure the scions would fall apart without her.

I have no reason to dislike her!

Favorite episode (scene if movie)

There is a really sweet scene when you depart for the first leg of Endwalker that makes me tear up everytime I think about it. There is a leg of quests in 5.3 that I also really love.

Favorite season/movie

I love Stormblood Era Tataru tbh, esp in the four lords quest chain (Which I strongly recommend doing its very good and has fun lore about a previous Warrior of Light!)

No particular line comes to mind, actually. But thats okay. She's just good.

Oh her Kugane outfit was so cute.

he is the most accurate depiction of a 32 year old man- but no I just love how he's a gruff on the outside but cares inside and also how he's a big brother(tm). Watching him grow as a character has been so wonderful
