Nothing in the last few years of cdramas will ever be as jaw droppingly glorious as Ling Buyi’s “father’s” party which can be summed up as:
Dad: what did you bring me for my birthday present, son?
Ling Buyi: wholesale family annihilation, UNCLE!
If Hamlet was half as decisive and bloodthirsty, the play would have a happy ending and be about 30 minutes long.

The best part is he sincerely means it as a compliment ahahahahaha even though her interpretation is the more normal one:

He really is the most awkward human alive, which makes sense since he's intense, fucked up, with a weird upbringing/background and zero need of social graces.
Also, this shippy MV for them:

I think LLTG is so so so very much a cdrama as a Jane Austen novel with some Bronte thrown in aka the best combo.
Chen Shaoshang's matrimonial quest and family adjustments AND Ling Buyi's revenge narrative against his uncle, which gets deliciously sidetracked by love, somehow mesh into a super coherent story even if you'd think they are in two different genres.

Also, I decided to rewatch this.
I am in utter AWE that he apparently fell irrevocably in love with a woman he's never seen based on (a) her hand (b) her voice (c ) the fact that she was willing to burn her traitor uncle to death.
One of the things I love so much about this story btw is that in any other drama, both Ling Buyi and Cheng Shaoshang would be the antagonists, selfish, and revenge-driven and obsessed with each other but not seeing humanity in others as a default. They'd be at best a complex (and possibly tragic ending) side couple or, even more likely, the antagonists our pure protags have to defeat. Sympathetic and interesting but not the mains. And yet here...
And I am sure I posted this MV before but whatever, it highlights how agog I was to watch the feral, dark, revenge-driven ML in the sea of wholesome good boys cdramas churn out now:

Also, Ling Buyi wins "worst cdrama birthday guest" award even over Mei Changsu because come the HELL on!

My next binge, seeing that there is literally nothing interesting airing in cdrama world and except for Missing Crown Prince which I don't like, nothing costume in kdrama world either.
Yes, I am the sole person who's never watched Blood of Youth.

Finished Blossoms in Adversity.
It was a pretty flawed drama, and Hu Yitian remains the second least watchable leading man in cdramas for me but it really was consistently the airing drama I'd watch FIRST - it really was an addicting watch despite its flaws.
The best thing? I don't know how they managed to get it past the censors, but they actually had the emperor as the Big Bad.
He was the one who exiled FL's family men unjustly, he was the one who punished and messed with her because he didn't like his nephew caring for anyone outside of him, and as the above scene indicates, even his gaslit/brainwashed/enmeshed in abused fashion nephew finally had enough. Every positive character who had an opinion hated him (FL literally called him out at one point!) and all the negative ones did too. He was not shown to do any of his petty, cruel, arbitrary things for the greater good but because he was a paranoid, self-absorbed man.
The best part? No last minute, death bed redemption of any kind. You think there would be one, as he lies dying from poison (inflicted by his own son! with the help of a foreign agent who is portrayed as justified and sympathetic!) but nope. Gu Yanxi, who realistically still loves his abusive as fuck father figure (because that's how it goes in rl), is all "I am sorry for stuff I did/said, I still love you, I will remain security head blah blah") and I expected the emperor to say he loved him and no pls go live your best life, find your happiness, I am sorry for being a bastard daddy etc etc but NOPE. Emperor just says "Yanxi" and croaks. (And same with his one remaining child, the sixth prince. He does not repent for how he treated his small son who saved his life, he does not appoint him heir etc. It's the dowager who trots the kid out.)
It's pretty telling that everyone gets a happy ending but only after the old monster croaks. The kid emperor pardons the Hua men who come back, Yanxi gives up his awful job and gets married and he and Hua Zhi peace the hell out of politics and business and just travel the world all over with no responsibilities etc etc.
I also liked how realistically tailored to various people the ending was in terms of happiness. Youngest uncle and aunt and their daughter go traveling, and I loved that - they were my faves except for sister and her OTP. Sister and her boo are in court, SML (who really wasn't - he never really pined and barely showed up) is a royal tutor, various younger married ladies have their own happiness (and I love that for one of them, it's a very realistic happiness of ruling her not attractive husband's concubines, business and household and getting his respect and buy in. She was neither looking for nor getting true love and that was fine with her) and the older generation of women also finding their calling that isn't just about the husbands (business, charity work etc etc.)

If you ever want to know why I am drawn to cdramas, take a look at these pics for Feng Ying Ran Mei Xiang. Here is Wang Churan, covered enough to please Queen Victoria:

And here is Li Hongyi:
Tumblr media
There was clearly only enough material for clothes for one of the leads, and they had to pick.
PS Between the fact that FL is an assassin and ML is her commander/trainer and THAT particular distribution of wardrobe, I believe it surprises nobody that Guo Jingming is listed as one of the two directors.

It’s rumored for early June. So maybe against LYF2 if the latter airs after Joy of Life 2 which is rumored for mid May.
I think Foxy is dropping relatively soon because the actors are recording some show appearance soon.

Doesn't it look like a cover of a web novel of deliciousness? Can't wait.
(Though why they only released one group poster and then chopped it up for individual and couple posters and didn't bother with OTP posters separately or a photoshoot is beyond me. It's a fancy production with big name stars, do better iQIYI!)

I am hoping it’s good! Loved Gong Jun in Word of Honor but none of his other dramas after that clicked for me at all. Yang Mi used to be a huge fave and I always loved all her costume dramas and then Pearl Eclipse happened and that was no more. So hope this one will break my “but whyyy” streak with both of them since when they are good, they are so good!
Just let this one out of the vault already iQIYI, it’s been two years!

Fandom is not uniquely toxic compared to the past.
I see a lot of people like "oh fandom used to be-!" but I'm here to tell you that no: it didn't. Look at one of the great Harry Potter wanks for examples: MsScribe made multiple sockpuppet accounts to bash a ship she didn't like, and to stir drama about what would now be called "purity wank." The war between Harry/Hermione and Hermione/Ron shippers was so fierce that entire websites rose and fell according to the tides of battle.
I remember fierce struggles between the original "shippers" (Mulder/Scully) and "noromos" (anti-shippers) in X-Files fandom in the nineties. I've gotten "flames" (harassment) for "making characters gay" in the Stargate and LotR fandoms. Sporking used to be a thing, for gods' sakes!
Fandom has always had toxicity, and the levels/flavor of that toxicity has been different depending on what fandom you've been in, but the general level of wank has not seen a steep increase over time, imo.
If you think there's been an increase:
You may have previously been in fandoms / pockets of fandom with a low level of toxicity, and either it changed over time or you moved to a fandom with a higher level of toxicity;
You may have not noticed toxicity because you were in the popular crowd, or bc toxicity was mostly directed outward from the groups you were in;
The subject of toxicity changed from topics you could brush off / dismiss / ignore (or was even the type of toxicity you "agreed" with or thought was "justified") to subjects that actively made you uncomfortable;
You just weren't aware of extant toxicity before and you are now (either bc of inexperience/naivete or bc nobody you knew was targeted, and that's changed now).
But to reiterate: the proportion of toxicity in fandom has not changed. Fandom has gotten bigger overall so there are more wankers than before, but the percentage of wankers and harassers haven't changed. And the tools/verbage they used may change, but the underlying nastiness hasn't increased.
Do not buy into the narrative that fandom was better in The Beforetimes - I've been in fandom over 25 years, and I'm telling you it wasn't. "Make Fandom Great Again" is a poisonous narrative used to appeal to your vulnerabilities. Challenge it, fight it, and figure out what you want from fandom while looking forward, not looking back.

This is delicious! Finally a QSCK ml I actually have investment in!
Honestly, normally QSCK novels don’t grab me too much even tho they are excellently written because I don’t have much interest in either inner courtyard fights nor revenge for past life stuff but Star General is totally not like that - it’s general x general, no inter courtyard stuff and very very little past life revenge. It’s just good even if there is basically no romance at all more than a third in.
