Having brain rot about some characters I made awhile back that I want to write a romance story with, so I made them in Picrew
^picrew link if y'all are interested. Highly recommend it
Tumblr media
Anywho. This is Cassandra. She is an Autistic bi questioning Demisexual girl with a huge special interest in flowers. She is French/Canadian and was raised to speak both. She speaks French by default at home and English by default in Public. Her mother and Aunts run a music store together and she helps out with it. She is going to College to get a degree in Business so she can open her own flower shop one day. She also enjoys art, music, animals, fashion, nature, and exploring.

This is Dalilah, your average tired college student that deals with ADHD, Social Anxiety, and random spurs of depression. She lives off of Monster Energy drinks, music, and adrenaline. Her passion is a band she has with her friends, and she's taking marketing so that she can A: Get a job in marketing for the sake of paying bills and B: so she can advertise for the band. She's a lesbian and falls hard for Cassandra shortly after meeting her. However between her social anxiety and Cassandra's difficulties with socializing and picking up on subtle cues, it is difficult for her to do anything about it.
I love these characters so much and I also have other characters in this story but I should be sleeping right now so I'll info dump about them another day

I wrote a book!
Tumblr media
Love, Murder, and Cake Pops.
Tin 122-845 is a Sentient CanopicBot who loves baking, Wizard of Oz, and serving cake pops to the handsome, mysterious customer known only as Marcus.
Marcus Delgado loves alien movies, coffee, and protecting a gentle baker named Tin 122-845 from a serial killer targeting “Sens” like Tin.
Two bodies have already turned up, and time is running out.
Tin and Marcus could really use a detective but...there are none to be found.
If you like science fiction murder mysteries with a fluffy, queer love story baked right in this is the book for you!
You can find it on www.ellyhazel.com or amazon/kindle Unlimited

i want casual, everyday autism in shows. i want autistic characters who need sensory symmetry, who casually mimic anyone's touch on one side of their bodies on the other (or who have friends who do it for them). i want a friend with flashcards or signals for when their friend loses speech. i want people on video calls and body doubling when they do jobs. i want people having conversations without eye contact. i want excited stimming. i want to see someone getting really excited about the tiniest thing thats related to a safefood or a special interest. i want casual, everyday autism.
(edit: october 22, 11:04am - "nonverbal" -> "nonspeaking") (edit: october 24, 9:44pm - "nonspeaking" -> "loses speech")

Write more characters with physical disabilities. Write more characters with mental disabilities. Write characters with neurodivergence (more than one specific type too). Write characters with mobility aids. Write characters who have good and bad health days. Write characters who are chronically in pain, but don't express it every second. Write characters who were born with a disability. Write characters who developed one. Write characters who have adapted to the world around them because the world won't adapt for them. Write about their strengths and weaknesses due to their disability. Write about accessibility. Write about inaccessibility. Make it realistic.
Don't make the disability magically disappear or be cured (or at least be mindful of how you write that). Don't make it their entire personality but also don't skip over it. Don't use stereotypes (and that's not just with disabilities). Don't make the character actively hate their disability; they're allowed to be upset but most people with disabilities have learned to accept it as part of their life and accept it as part of their identity.

Ever just realized you accidentally made a character and their love interest perfect for each other?
Like, in the second book Jean has a love interest (because she didn’t want the one I gave her in the first book) and this new love interest is a wholesome gender fluid Mary Sue with co dependency issues while Jean is a bi questioning adhd ridden mess with abandonment issues
So it’s obvious I made them compatible on purpose
But then something I didn’t even realize I did
Coira (the love interest) loves horses. Horses are their favourite thing,
Jean’s staff, the one she uses for magic, is a hobbyhorse she stole from her brother so she could use magic in the first book.
This was an accident and I love it and I only realized it because Coira’s sister noticed it!

Marcus Delgado loves alien movies, coffee, and protecting the gentle baker named Tin 122-845 from a serial killer targeting androids like him.
Two bodies have been discovered and time is running out for Tin.
Marcus is in over his head with no leads or support from his agency.
Tin has no idea he's in danger, but he'd like Marcus to know he's single.
They could really use a detective but...there are none to be found.

I just realised that all the media I adore has some level of autistic/neurodivergent coding and it's been that way since I was a child.
And like, oftentimes their different way of perceiving and being in the world is the driving force of the story/and or a crucial element in it.
There’s the canon example of the entire Camp Halfblood (ADHD), where the ADHD is literally what keeps the characters alive.
There's Dean Winchester (ADHD) whose hyperfixations are typically masculine (as well as geeky) and who never sits still, with the added bonus of Castiel (Autism), who Dean just... accepts, in a way I rarely see.
Then there’s the infamous Will Graham (Autism) whose hyperempathy is litterally the focal point of the entire narrative.
We have Haru from Free! (Autism), whose special interest (swimming) is the motivating factor for several other characters.
Reki and Langa from Sk8 the infinity (Autism), who share a special interest and grow a special bond because of it.
There's Sai from Hikaru No Go (Autism), who trancedented time and space to play Go (special interest) and whose special interest sets the story into motion.
We have any version of Sherlock Holmes (AuDHD), who's brilliance I attribute to a mixture of hyperfixations and special interest in crime solving. His conflicts with society and disregard of social norms are a central theme as well.
There's Anne with an E (Autism), who loves words and stories and speaks before she thinks (where all major problems arise due to her lack of understanding for social norms)
We have Pat and Pran from Bad Buddy (ADHD + Autism), like I dunno, I just really felt that vibe.
There's Beth Harmon from Queen's Gambit (Autism) with her special interest in Chess.
And like, the list goes on: Daryl Dixon, Jon Snow, Kotaro from Kotaro Lives Alone, Will Treaty from the Ranger's apprentice, Hal from the same author, Katniss Everdeen, Si-eun from Weak Hero Class 1, etc.
Don't get me wrong I've consumed plenty of stories without characters coded this way, but all the stories that truly resonated with me? Neurodivergent, all of them.
It's probably because the focus on social norms/hierarchy always seemed foreign to me. Eg. I like Skam but it's like a view into a completely foreign world where people function differently.
