given that Google is pretty unreliable nowadays, can you explain why TLOU is anti-Palestine? I remember the games being very insularlly focused on the USA. (I don't know shit about anything, lol)

Neil Druckmann was the creative director and co-writer of the Last of Us part 2 and is the current co-president of Naughty Dog. He wrote and produced the TV show as well and his hatred towards Palestinians was a point of inspiration with the story.

He was born in Israel and was raised in a Israeli settlement. He recounts that the killing of two Israeli occupation soldiers by Palestinians (within the occupied West Bank I might add!) is what sparked a lot of his hatred towards Palestinians. It’s a whole sob story about how he wanted vengeance on Palestinians and how he later “regretted the impulses”. It’s not something you can really ignore in the show or games because it is baked into the writing.

I'm getting back into my live for astronomy and all my knowledge is coming back to me in waves but you know what made me freeze?

ALPHA FUCKING CENTAURI

So you know how Crowley mentions/talks about going to Alpha Centauri several times of the course of both seasons?

Well, Alpha Centauri is made of two stars, Alpha Centauri A and Alpha Centauri B.

A and B both orbit a common centre, and (if my memory serves me right), their orbital period is roughly 79-80 years.

(Also, I think this is probably an irrelevant connection, but the time between the Holy Water request and the Blitz was 79 YEARS)

The orbit of A and B is eccentric (not a perfect circle), meaning the distance from which both planets orbit their centre fluctuates, making the two stars be around as close as the Sun and Saturn at some points.

AND THIS NEXT BIT IS MAKING ME GOD SLIGHTLY CRAZY (I HAVE ISSUES)

We see that, throughout time, Crowley and Aziraphales time without seeing each other (that we currently know of) fluctuates.

ALOT LIKE HOW CENTAURI A AND CENTAURI B ORBIT EACH OTHER!!!!!

Their relationship is (astronomically speaking) eccentric. They go periods of time in which they don't know when either of them know when they will see each other next, and this is exactly the orbit of Alpha Centauri A and B.

It's as if Crowley and Aziraphale are already standing on Alpha Centauri, one on A and one on B.

At one point, they get close enough to brush fingers, launching delicate sparks into the nothingness before being wrenched away from each other, unaware when they will see one another next.

IM ALSO THINKING ABOUT HOW CROWLEY ONLY EVER ASKS AZIRAPHALE TO GO OFF TO ALPHA CENTAURI. NOWHERE ELSE. WHEREAS AZIRAPHALE ASKS CROWLEY TO COME BACK UP TO HEAVEN AND AHHHHHHHHHHHH

Ahem- anyways. Let's get to the point dolphins

Crowley wants to go to Alpha Centauri because his astronomy loving ass feels that it represents the two of them.

It represents the two of them in a tragic metaphor of desperate love and seperation but also in the way that they are both irrevocably tied to one another.

These two stars are tied to one another in the way that neither would be truly complete without the other.

And when Crowley looks at Aziraphale as he say that Alpha Centauri is "nice" and "he's always wanted to go there", you see the remembrance of Crowleys plea for them both to go to Alpha Centauri (season 1, ep 3) in Aziraphale's eyes.

And so when Aziraphale begs Crowley to come back to heaven, it's a direct parrellel back to S1, EP3. Crowley wanted them both to go to Alpha Centauri, their celestial representation as I'm going to call it, and be true equals, and Aziraphale wanted to go but doubled down on his mission to save Earth.

EXCEPT this time Aziraphale wants them both to go back to heaven, a place where they WILL NOT be equals, and Crowley vehemently says no.

It's a contrast between a place of equality and a place of inequality, and Aziraphale's choice of inequality was interpreted as Aziraphale not viewing their relationship in the same way as Crowley does, leaving him lost.

Aziraphale leaves him the same way Alpha Centauri A leaves Alpha Centauri B, further away but never truly gone.

Except Crowley doesn't know if he's coming back.

"...The proliferation of the ‘Black Character Dies First’ trope is rooted in the historical exclusion of Black people from places of equity. Like Hollywood’s history of vilifying and murdering queer folks on-screen as a method to oppress even the image of queer life, dehumanisation of Black on-screen life stems from regulations, laws and a dominant global culture whose racism excluded them from humanity, limiting the inclusion of Black people behind and in front of the camera. 

The relationship between Black death and white protagonists also sees Black people killed to further non-Black characters’ plotlines, in a trope filmmaker Ashlee Blackwell identifies as the “Sacrificial Negro”. The Sacrificial Negro, she says, put “themselves in the face of danger and must die in order to help the white character to survive”. Sarah may not willingly have sacrificed herself in Last Of Us, but it’s her absorption of the bullets fired that allows for her non-Black dad to live. 

It’s just not possible to divorce HBO’s The Last of Us from this cultural legacy. Sarah’s death at the hands of a faceless agent of law enforcement even echoes the images of the killing of Black people at the hands of police. Her death has always been a senseless tragedy within the story, but casting a Black actor in the role complicates the image of her death beyond a simple tragedy, and racialises her death in a way that can’t be separated from Black bodies being treated as dispensable on-screen.

Druckmann disregards Black trauma and Black bodies in The Last of Us beyond how they bolster the stories of his white protagonists. It’s hardly a stretch to see this as an extension of his “intense hate that is universal” attitude; one that privileges universal hate over a universal right to humanity. It seems that, for Druckmann, people of colour in The Last of Us are canon fodder in the battle for his white character’s survival. 

In The Last of Us, the Black person is dead. They are twice dead in the backstory, dead in the inciting incident, dead twice over on the journey, and rot among the corpses Ellie and Joel step over. A show’s attempt at inclusion has failed if almost every person of colour dies for the sake of white character development. The bodies of Black people and people of colour are not footnotes or fodder. "

Andrew yawns again and considers getting up to go to bed. But he’s comfortable where he is. And warm. And cozy. He decides to stay put. After a couple minutes of waiting, Andrew’s eyes fall shut and his breathing starts to slow. Then his phone vibrates where it’s lying on his chest and he jolts awake. Fuck. 

10 I don’t know. I was just curious. What are you doing? Andrew Currently? Falling asleep. 10 Am I that boring? Andrew Yes. But also, I’m fucking exhausted. Perhaps you should set fires earlier in the day, so I don’t have to miss sleep. 10 You want me to set fires in broad daylight? Andrew It would be a nice change of pace. 10 No, it’s easier to fade into the background at night. Besides, the fire is prettier when it’s dark.

Andrew supposes he’s got a point. For a lunatic, anyhow. 

After calling the arsonist an idiot and getting another sad face emoji in response, the two talk until Andrew's eyes refuse to stay open. That’s when he drifts off and dreams of a fire at the beach. It’s huge and 10 is there, of course. And he’s got that sad look on his face again. Andrew subtlety waves and when he blinks, 10 is gone. 

Just like the real thing.

Andrew paused for a moment. He had an eidetic memory, but he couldn't recall ever telling Nicky about the drive-through chapel they'd found. But of course, one particular loudmouth who knew about the fake wedding came to mind.

"Matt. Matt told you."

"I'm not going to confirm or deny that accusation," Nicky said calmly before returning to a louder volume. "But either way, I should have been one of the first people to know! Aaron's also pissed, by the way!"

Now, why had Nicky gone and told Aaron about it? "Nicky, calm down."

"I will not calm down, Andrew! Ma—my informant also told me that you two don't even have rings! I raised you better than this, Andrew Minyard."

The apartment door creaked open, and a few footsteps later Neil Josten was in front of Andrew, in all his sweaty glory, dabbing at his face with the bottom of his shirt and exposing a midriff littered with scars and accented by toned muscle.

Neil nodded his head at Andrew's phone and raised an eyebrow. Who is it?

Nicky, Andrew mouthed back.

Neil beckoned for the phone, and Andrew happily handed it over. "Hey Nicky," Neil started, only for Nicky's aggravated voice to blare through the speakers, once again lamenting being left out of their wedding.

Neil sighed. "Nicky, it's not a real marriage. We drove through an attraction at Las Vegas that was offering fake marriage certificates and two-minute ceremonies."

Andrew could hear Nicky's response, even if he didn't have the phone: "Yeah, well, that wasn't fake!"

Neil's eyes widened as he locked gazes with Andrew.

"Fuck," they both mouthed.

Starting a band wasn't easy, especially if you were missing a decent guitarist. Sure, a bunch of people had shown up for auditions, but none of them were the right fit. After weeks of no success, Nikki turned up at the apartment with a strange book sporting a big red pentagram on the cover. He'd found it while perusing a little curio and occultism shop, off one of the main streets, a little hidden away. Something drew him to it and who was he to resist that fateful pull.

Tommy and Vince were sceptical. What use would that old tome be? Magic was not a real thing and now they were short on money for groceries and other necessities just because Nikki decided he needed to have it and that it would help them.

Nikki carefully studied the book the following days, until he landed on a page detailing the steps to summon various kinds of demons and infernal creatues for all sorts of purposes.

Eventually, he was able to convince Tommy and Vince to help him set everything up to try and summon the perfect guitarist for their band. As ridiculous as it sounded, they decided to just go for it. They gathered candles, chalk, matches, sacrificial items relating to the kind of demon the three of them wanted to summon and went to work.

As soon as Nikki had finished reading the spell, the summoning circle they had drawn out on their living room floor began to glow red. Tommy stepped closer to Nikki's right while Vince grabbed hold of Nikki's left shoulder and upper arm, almost hiding behind the bassist.

A blinding flash of light, a boom that must've rattled the entire apartment building, and suddenly, Nikki, Tommy, and Vince found themselves staring at a very real and very scary looking demon, a guitar grasped tightly in its hands. It was close in height and stature to Vince but no less intimidating. The demon fixed the three men with an intense stare, as if gazing right into their very souls. Who would've thought that summoning creatures from the depths of hell as an unorthodox band recruitment strategy actually worked?
