Happy National Fluffernutter Day! The Marshmallow Fluff associated with the world-famous #Fluffernutter was first whipped up by Archibald Query of Sommerville, Massachusetts in 1917. Archibald made batches of Fluff in his kitchen and sold it door to door until sugar shortages and rationing during World War I brought Fluff sales to a not-so-sweet halt. After the war ended, two candlemakers joined Archie as partners in 1920 and renamed the original recipe “Toot Sweet Marshmallow Fluff.” Archie sold his recipe to partners H. Allen Durkee and Fred L. Mower for $500 on May 14, 1920, who shortened their product’s name to Marshmallow Fluff. Sales of Fluff under the Durkee-Mower, Inc. brand increased over the next decade. In 1930, the company sponsored a 15-minute radio variety show, “The Flufferettes,” to market their popular confection. As demand for gooey sweet Fluff grew, the company released “The Yummy Book” cookbook in 1940 with recipes using Fluff. So its another #food holiday shout out to my #sister! #NationalPierogiDay and #NationalFluffernutterDay these days are observed annually on #October8th. Some food holidays are stickier than others, and National Fluffernutter Day is a stick-to-your-ribs-chin-fingers-nose kind of day! Celebrate zealously, then take a bath. A sweet marshmallow-like spread called #Marshmallow Creme was invented in 1917 by Archibald Query in Somerville, #Massachusetts. In 1913 during World War I, Emma and Amory Curtis of Melrose, Massachusetts invented Snowflake Marshmallow Creme and published a recipe for a peanut butter and marshmallow creme sandwich, which is the earliest known example of a Fluffernutter. Query sold his recipe for Marshmallow Creme to Durkee-Mower, Inc. in 1920, who renamed it Marshmallow Fluff. Over 100 years later they continue to sell it under that name today. It was in 1960 that the term Fluffernutter was created by an advertising agency for Durkee-Mower in an attempt to effectively market the peanut butter and marshmallow sandwich. Beyond the history of Fluffernutter, let’s explore the culinary side of this extraordinary combination of sweet and nutty. By layering all the creamy goodness of marshmallow creme and #peanutbutter between toasted bread, some #kitchen experts have taken perfection to the limits. When #pigs fly?
