So today is #WorkLikeADogDay it is also the I enlisted in the Mighty Mighty Marine Corps! That's right I am a #DevilDog! Devil Dog is a nickname for a #USMarine. It is said by US Marines to be based on the use of "Teufelshunde" by #German soldiers to describe Marines fighting in #WorldWar The "Devil Dogs" nickname for Marines appeared in #newspapers in the United Statesin April 1918. The La Crosse Tribune ran a story about the nickname on April 27, 1918, and other newspapers used the story as early as April 14, 1918. Other common nicknames for Marines are "#Leatherneck" and "#Jarhead". The 13th colony and the 4th state to enter the Union, #NationalGeorgiaDay recognizes the natural wonders and immense complexities of this bastion of Southern culture. #Georgia’s founder, James Oglethorpe, settled the colony’s first capital, #Savannah. Georgia would go on to have four more capitals, #!Augusta, Louisville, Milledgeville and finally, #Atlanta Politically and socially, a divide has always seemed to exist. Considering Georgia was initially established as a barrier of fortification between #SouthCarolina’s southern border and the #Spanish settled in #Florida, perhaps Georgia lived up to destiny. To Sign or Not to Sign Georgia initially prohibited slavery in 1735. Of the 13 original colonies, she was the only one to do so. The prohibition lasted 15 years. Leading up the Revolution, Georgia leaned toward supporting the crown and was the single colony not in attendance at the First Continental Congress. During the Second Continental Congress, Georgia first sent one delegate, Lyman Hall. However, Hall didn’t vote because he only represented a single parish in Georgia. The colony later sent Button Gwinnett and George Walton as official delegates. All three signed the Declaration of Independence. Wars were destructive for Georgia. Her people and the economy suffered, and the resistance to social change persisted. During the 20th century, industrial and technological advancements found a niche in Georgia’s economy. The story of the area of present-day #NewJersey begins at the end of the Younger Dryas, about 15,000 years ago. #NativeAmericans moved into New Jersey soon after the reversal of the Younger Dryas; before then an ice sheet hundreds of feet thick had made the area of northern New Jersey uninhabitable. #European contact began with the exploration of the Jersey Shore by Giovanni da #Verrazzano in 1524. At the time of European contact, many tribes of the Lenape lived in the area. In the 17th century, the New Jersey region came under the control of the #Swedes and the #Dutch, resulting in a struggle in which the Dutch proved victorious (1655). However, the English seized the Dutch colony of New Netherland in 1664. New Jersey became one of the Thirteen Colonies which broke away from Britain in the American Revolution, adopting the Declaration of Independence in 1776. Becoming a state upon the formation of the United States, New Jersey saw significant action during the American Revolutionary War. New Jersey's delegates signed the Articles of Confederation in 1779 and Princeton acted as the nation's capital for four months in 1783. In 1787, New Jersey became the third state to ratify the United States Constitution In the 19th century, New Jersey cities led the United States into the Industrial Revolutionand provided soldiers for many of the wars the United States fought, including 88,000 men for the American Civil War. The state became a component of the Underground Railroad. Commemorating the end of slavery in the United States, Juneteenth is observed on #June19. The celebration originated in #Texas when Major General Gordon Granger arrived in $Galveston. He announced on June 19, 1865, with General Orders, Number 3 that the Civil War was over and all slaves were now freedmen. News traveled slowly, even stubbornly during and after the #War between the States. The #Emancipation Proclamation had been signed over two years earlier. General Lee had surrendered at Appomattox two months before, and #President #Lincoln had already been laid to rest. The official final surrender had taken place just weeks before but the word, official word, seemed to be required to impact what was already happening in the rest of the country. The celebration of Juneteenth grew from the profound experience that day when many learned of their freedom to the surmounting challenges that lay ahead and the lasting perseverance required for dignity, to overcome adversity and achieve fulfillment. Year after year, pilgrimages have been made to Galveston and celebrations have spread around the country and the world. In 2015, #Juneteenth celebrated its 150th anniversary.
