Hey lovelies! This one's late, sorry about that, I fell asleep again. Today I wanted to send a reminder that you get to create your own space. You get to choose who's in your crew, and your safe space ship. If you don't feel comfortable, because someone is making you feel that way, you don't have to interact with them. I know it's hard, I know that I often suffer from justice fatigue (and I want so badly to explain my point of view), but it really is important to give yourself some space from the things in this world that are heavier. It doesn't mean you can't come back to them, or you shouldn't care, but remember to give yourself a break.

Tumblr, Twitter, those places have "safety" measures in place through blocking, ignoring certain words, etc to help with this kind of thing, so if you need a break from discussions or politics, or whatever, please feel free to use them. You deserve some joy and rest too. Tumblr is my happy place personally, I love coming here and seeing all the cool meta, fanart, fics, etc, but there have been times where I've felt like I just can't deal with the heavier stuff. It's okay not to interact with it if it's bothering you. It's okay to block people who are attacking you. It's okay to ask for support with it too. I love that there's a way to block anon asks now (not just turning them off, but you can block them last time I looked).

A lot of our lives we're told that we don't have a lot of control, but one thing about these kinds of spaces is, we do get to have some semblance of control on what we see and who we interact with, and there's no shame in practicing self care.

Anyway lovelies, take care of yourselves, we love you and we want you to be okay <3

1. Integrity Compromised - The Mandalorian

It was Greef who recommended her. Of course he ‘knew a guy’. Or woman, in this case.

“An engineer of extraordinary talent,” Greef had said over the holo-com. And she would have to be, if she was going to be able to handle Mandalorian armour.

2. Loyalty, Divided - Uncharted

“Let’s try this again,” Sully said, stretching his hand across the table. “Victor Sullivan. My friends call me Sully.”

The kid smiled a little at that.

Friends. Don't suppose he has a whole lot of those right now.

3. Brothers and Sons - Red Dead Redemption 2

He watched his daddy hang.

A part of him hoped the old man would end with some kind of pride. Show some spine. Jut his chin at the sky and meet his maker like a man. But the bastard was whimpering by the end.

4. On the Road - The Last of Us

“Your watch is broken.”

She points it out as if he hasn’t noticed.

He almost laughs. Snorts air out his nose, but doesn’t bother to reply. There’d be no way to explain it even if he did. The watch’s face is cracked and the battery died long ago, but it would be like losing a limb to take it off. Some days the weight of it is all that keeps him in the world.

5. The Last Strand - Death Stranding

There’s so much he needs to tell her. So much he’s gonna have to teach her. But what the hell does he know? And where does he even begin?

He starts with the alphabet because even though she can’t speak and doesn’t even know what the fuck a letter is, he figures it’s a fundamental thing you’re meant to teach kids and she seems to like the rhythm and recitation of it as he walks.

6. Red Dead Whumptober - Red Dead Redemption 2

The wire sliced into his skin like a snakebite, its barbs latching on and pulling tight into the flesh of his thigh, his side, his arm, ripping tears into his brand new shirt and all. Dutch’d given him that shirt just last week and he’d be givin’ him an earful for bleeding all over it, too.

7. The Longest Dark - The Mandalorian

He did the math without really thinking. His navi-computer was programmed to sync with the Galactic Standard Calendar, based on the Coruscant solar system, but a little conversion in his head and suddenly the date, and its significance, was embedded in his thoughts.

He tried to shake it off. Nostalgia served very little purpose except to distract you from the present, and besides, there was no one to share it with, so what did it matter?

8. Babysitting Cassie - Uncharted

Sam fidgeted at the front door, listening to the various noises of family life behind it. Little running feet; Nathan’s voice raised in a teasing kind of threat; that big dumb dog of theirs, barking its big dumb head off; Elena yelling at them all to stop fooling around, then giggling as she presumably got caught up in whatever game they were playing.

9. A Normal Life - Uncharted

“Look, kiddo. I’d rather do a lot of things than eat my vegetables but you gotta do it,” Sam sighed, as Cassie pouted over her plate.

“They’re mushy.”

“They are cooked to perfection you tiny Gordon Ramsay.”

The pout deepened. “I’m not a gord-damn namsy!”

10. Blood Brothers - Uncharted

Head for the lighthouse.

They were so close. Sam could see the top of the dilapidated tower jutting up above the cliffside. They were gonna make it. Of course they were. It’s what they did – scrambling and half-assing their way through situations that should have been the end of them. If the Drake brothers had a business card, By The Skin Of Our Teeth would be their tagline.

Kaylor Swiftgron: Which Muse Inspired Which Songs on Red & 1989

On the precipice of 1989 TV's release and amidst the Kaylorification of 1989 TV's rollout, I thought it'd be a good time to figure out which muses aligned to which songs. I did my research, which includes: lyrical analysis & music video analysis, the timing of when songs were written, which producers and co-writers were credited to each song, social media posts, and where the girls were in real time. Shout out to @sophietv for her incredible work on the Kaylor timelines and evidence, and to @swiftgronmasterpost and @swiftgronmasterpost for their work to outline everything from Achele to Rivergron to Swiftgron. Round of applause to you both!!

Let's get into it!! (and if you want to just see my conclusions for which songs are about which muse, scroooolllll to the bottom)

The Red Muses

2011

Red was written in two phases. First, she worked with her producer from Speak Now & Fearless, Nathan Chapman. They wrote 25 songs together between February and October 2011. She took these songs to Scott Borchetta and he congratulated her on a finished album, but she wanted to experiment with other producers and writers to play with new sounds. So, after October 2011 she started working with a handful of other producers to write more tracks for Red. Here's a breakdown of Red songs by producer.

The first time we know for sure Dianna and Taylor interacted was on September 4th, 2011 at the Fairfax Flea Market, which implied that the songs Taylor wrote with Chapman weren't about Dianna.

Karlie and Taylor dated (I think) starting in the summer or early fall of 2011. I think they weren't expecting anything super serious, but it was one of those flirtations that starts out strong and feels good with them and all of the sudden you're in love and you barely believe it and feel ridiculous for knowing but you have a feeling this person is for you, maybe forever... It sounds right for Taylor who has admitted how fast & hard she tends to fall for people when she's in love.

Taylor attended the Rodarte Spring/Summer 2012 fashion show during NYFW and sat front row next to Anna Wintour on Tuesday, September 13, 2011. Karlie walked in the show (slay). This was also the day that Taylor spent with a Vogue interviewer for her iconic January 2012 Vogue Cover and Article where she is quoted as saying "I love Karlie Kloss! I want to bake cookies with her!" She said this straight after leaving the Rodarte Fashion Show.

Interestingly, Karlie was quoted in a magazine as having been introduced to Taylor Swift at the Met Gala and they joked about baking cookies together! They both attended the Met Gala in May 2011, just four months before the Rodarte Fashion Show/Vogue Interview day! So it's pretty weird that Taylor would say the exact same thing, unprompted, when she saw a photo of Karlie Kloss at a fashion designer's studio on the exact same day she sat front row for a fashion show Karlie walked in!!

I imagine that Taylor and Karlie fell into something new and beautiful and sweet by accident. The Rodarte Show was on a Tuesday, maybe they met up for coffee the next day on Wednesday, September 14th in NYC? Who's to say!

All that said, I think Begin Again is about Karlie. It was written sometime between February and October 2011, which would've been a really, really fast turnaround for it to be about Dianna. Between the music video and the lyrical connections, it's very Kaylor coded. Starlight also could plausibly be about Karlie because they attended the Met together in 2010 and 2011, and their 2011 dresses were sparkly and tbh Karlie looked hot AF.

But, let's also remember that Taylor is on tour and just got herself out of two on-again-off-again, fairly toxic relationships, and as she said herself in Begin Again that the last 8 months she's been heartbroken and scared to get hurt from love (earliest would've been June 2010-February 2011 and latest would've been February-October 2011). Plus she's not even 22 years old, so she's not necessarily good at being in relationships yet. She's in a messy place, and she falls in love like a ton of bricks.

I think that this delicate, precious new thing with Karlie didn't work out (not for malice or hurting each other, just life) and over the winter they were distant but were still in contact.

2012

On January 17, 2012 we get tweets from BOTH Karlie and Dianna about the *iconic* Vogue article. This makes me think:

1. Karlie is still interested in exploring this new relationship with Taylor

2. Dianna and Taylor have kept in touch and have a lil something something going on, a little curiosity they might want to explore

3. Taylor likes public attention, and she likes feeling wanted, and she's got two hot ass women who want her. Do you blame the girl for being messy!?!

Dianna and Taylor attend the same pre-Oscars party on February 24th, 2012, and this is where I think Swiftgron starts to take off. Dianna is all happy and heart eyes online for the next three weeks until the Speak Now Tour ends. They're spotted together frequently in March and April. The Shirley MacLaine birthday party thing happens April 25th, Dianna's circus birthday party is April 28th, and I would bet anything they started hooking up sometime these first two months. I think Holy Ground was written about Dianna's birthday party, with the note on the door with the joke we made, and that was the first day.

Taylor writes Everything Has Changed and Run on May 15th, 2012, with Ed Sheeran, and records both EHC and The Last Time on May 28th, 2012. Everything Has Changed seems Swiftgron (thanks Gaylor twt for helping me figure out that the freckles are IN Dianna's green eyes bc girl bye I was full of questions). The Last Time is almost certainly about Liz.

But Run is very Kaylor coded! The pale blue eyes, use of darling, the laugh like a child (Begin Again), locket, picture frame...

On May 31st, 2012, Dianna is bearding hard with Henry Joost to distract from her appearance with GLAAD. I have a working hypothesis that Taylor Swift hates beards and is not a fan of having to use them or be with people who have them. I just don't think it works for her with how insanely famous she is, the guys are hyperscrutinized and she's honestly not very good at being a convincing heterosexual woman. I think there's some conflict between Taylor and Dianna because of the beard.

By June 10th, 2012, Taylor has written 22, WANEGBT, and IKYWT. I am inclined to believe that WANEGBT is about Emily or Liz. Same thing with IKYWT. 22 is about her besties and living life and being carefree and embracing all of the beauty and pain of falling in and out of love and everything that is your early 20s.

We get the whole Hyannis Port x Kennedys summer week of pap walks featuring Swiftgron all over the place! But it seems like they probably break up later in July. This was a hot and cold relationship for real.

WANEGBT is released on 8/13 and Dianna tweets at Taylor (like never ever?). On September 29, 2012 Dianna and Naya Rivera are on a cheeky, lil sexy vacation in Paris. Taylor goes to Paris that same weekend to film Begin Again at the Love Lock bridge (Karlie is also in Paris but there's no evidence to show that they saw each other at all).

However, I wouldn't put it past Taylor and Karlie to have seen each other while Swiftgron was cold. Perhaps in September 2012 right around when she filmed Begin Again?

October 17, 2012 Taylor writes This Love in LA according to her diary entries. So I think This Love is about the Swiftgron reconciliation for whatever happened this summer. Things are good for a bit, they go to the Ripple of Hope gala together on December 3rd, 2012. They're pictured together on December 6th, 2012 and Dianna's all cryptic online about her secret love.

Quick Aside: Karlie and Josh have been "officially together" ever since June 2012, but they were first seen together in November 2012 when they both attended the VS Fashion Show. I'm under the impression that these gay celebrities in their early twenties only needed a beard when they were in another relationship they were distracting away from. They didn't need a beard, they could just say they were focused on friends and their career (aka 1989 era). So who was Karlie dating in mid 2012 that needed to be covered up with plausible deniability? This would've been in the works for a bit before they launched it in November 2012.

Also, super interesting that Karlie also met Taylor for the "first time" at the 2013 Victoria's Secret Fashion Show, hmm? Anywayssss.

2013

I think everything Swiftgron blew up on February 14th, 2013 with the 'I Do' episode of Glee where Dianna Agron and Naya Rivera hook up on screen. Taylor made a whole big deal about this episode containing one of her songs and encouraged her fans to watch, but her song wasn't in the show (tweet was later deleted). But picture this: Happy Valentine's Day, watch your girlfriend hook up with the girl she told you not to worry about!! And then learn that they actually did hookup when y'all were on a break, like two weeks before y'all got back together!! Oooh boy!! I'm pretty sure this was what inspired Babe (in the music video Taylor was the mistress, but IRL Taylor was the main character who got cheated on instead of the mistress!!).

Dianna is a mess on Twitter after that and there might have been about two months of back & forth, maybe some breakup sex, but I think Swiftgron died dead by the time the article about them secretly dating dropped on April 16th, 2013.

The Red tour started on March 18th, 2013 and I can't imagine that made things any easier for Swiftgron. Meanwhile... I think Karlie and Taylor re-reconnected in this time period.

The 1989 Muses

2013

Taylor wrote 1989 while on tour for Red (except for This Love, according to the diary entry it was written on 10/17/2012). I think the breakup songs are about Dianna and the love songs (excluding This Love) are allllll Karlie.

If Taylor and Karlie did reconnect in Fall 2012, then Spring 2013 would be a long six months later...

Taylor and Karlie "meet for the first time" (which we have so much proof that it's not but like, okay, fine) on November 13, 2013 at the Victoria's Secret Fashion show. We know this isn't their first meeting or flirtationship, but it certainly is their first public outing to test what people say about their friendship.

Then, I'd wager Taylor plays "cat & mouse for a month or two or three" until they officially are girlfriends on March 6, 2014. Yay!!!

please i need an explanation of nathan wesninski not being a serial killer. his character in canon is so interesting and i’d love to hear your analysis.

to preface this i'm legitimately a little sick right now, so sorry in advance if i'm not the most coherent. this got a little long, so readmore has been put in place.

Nathan works for the Moriyamas. linds, who is incredible at finding quotes/excerpts from the novels, pulled this last night, which gives a clearer idea of what Nathan was doing. it's irrelevant to the books what the Moriyamas were doing, but Nathan was tasked with holding Baltimore as Moriyama territory. this would involve "dealing with" people who interfered with their trade, whether that be drugs, trafficking, smuggling, or a combination of those. this could range anywhere from chasing them off, bribing officials, or killing people. given Nathan's proclivities, i would not be surprised if he was also used to extract information from competitors or threats to the empire. Neil says that Lola was responsible for disappearing bodies; apparently her MO was cutting them into tiny pieces and disposing of them. while unclear, i suspect Romero/Malcom were grunts: responsible for grabbing people, transporting them, and doing the pre-torture torture for Nathan. this is explicitly what they do with Neil, and all of this tracks with a hierarchy one would expect out of organized crime, NOT from a serial killer.

however, their structure indicated him as the fall guy: they are doing organized crime; it is inevitable the feds are going to come sniffing, and the Moriyamas planned for this and decided that Nathan would be the one to take the fall. based on the organized crime, being paid by the Moriyamas, and having $5 million hanging around for Mary to steal, it seems fairly straightforward to assume he was laundering money. this would be necessary to hide the trail that would lead that money back to the Moriyamas, and would be a necessary component of setting him up as the fall guy. lots of little hidey holes for her to sneak it out of, that would not be noticed immediately. this leads me to the next VERY important point: Nathan is in jail for tax evasion.

you know, the thing Al Capone, infamous gangster, got prosecuted for? the IRS doesn't fuck around, and it's easier to hide bodies than it is to skip out on taxes. if you think i'm kidding, i'm really not.

now, i've also seen people point to Nathan's enjoyment of killing people as a sign he's a serial killer. i counter this by saying who better to put in a "torture and kill people" job than a guy who likes to torture and kill people? in a majorly fucked up way, this is a great way to keep this sort of person loyal to the family; he gets to do something he likes with a fair bit of resources and protection. (that protection is limited, obviously, but isn't non-existent; he has money, which means he has lawyers, and he has bribes, and he can make a lot of awkward things go away.)

this may be an example people don't like, but we don't call active duty soldiers who kill people in the line of duty serial killers because they are doing a job, even if they seem to enjoy it WAY too much. for that same reason, you can't say Nathan getting a kick out of murder is a surefire sign he's a serial killer. it means you have grounds for an AU, if you'd like it, but not that he is one. killing people comes with the territory with organized crime. he's just doing his job.

but what about Neil? that's serial killer stuff, right? no. it's not. it's personal, yes, but having a personal vendetta against the kid who was never anything but an object and the woman who stole $5 million of your scary boss's money (and also embarrassed you in a supremely emasculating way--he got robbed by his wife and kid, which would have major repercussions on his reputation and power in the family) isn't really. pointing toward serial killer. it's pointing toward an obsession, and murderous intent, but that does not a serial killer make. it's a different MO entirely. he's still employing his people to find the kid and torment him. he's mixing business and pleasure, if you will, while hunting down Mary and Neil.

further, Neil never considers him a serial killer. this is ALSO important; the narrative does give you a pretty clear-cut idea of how to feel about him. even in Neil's obfuscations, Nathan was a gangster who they stole money from and ran away from because he was an abusive sack of shit. at no point does Neil suggest that Nathan was going out and hunting people down to sate an urge. there is no indication that Nathan had a profile, or a favorite type of victim, or even that he hunted for personal pleasure. Nathan enjoys his work, but it's still work. he's not snatching people out of dark alleys and killing them. he's not doing it to fulfill a lust for power or to sate sexual urges or anything of that nature that would point toward serial killer; he's killing people who interfere with the business. Neil interfered with the business. he made Nathan look stupid and weak. hunting Neil down would be a "justified" vendetta for him to have. a pet project, if you want to call it that.

basically, Nathan works for the mob. his jail time is a direct allusion to Capone, another gangster. he kills for entirely different reasons than a serial killer would. you can argue that he's a serial killer in the sense he's killed people over time, but that would be incorrect for the same reason we don't consider hitmen or active duty soldiers serial killers. different motives, different executions. even if they like it.

-Regarder Godzilla x Kong : Le nouvel Empire en streaming sur Papadustream.cfd : Streaming Le dernier opus de la franchise Monsterverse de Warner Bros. montre des signes d'une imagination anémique. Rien dans “Godzilla x Kong : Le Nouvel Empire” ne fait sens, ce qui n'est pas, en soi, un problème. Nous ne sommes pas installés confortablement dans nos sièges de cinéma avec notre popcorn rassis pour discuter de métaphores et de science ; nous sommes ici pour les stars du titre. À propos de ce titre : “Godzilla x Kong” (censé évoquer divers autres titres dans d'autres films Godzilla, non hollywoodiens) pourrait signifier Godzilla multiplié par Kong, ou Godzilla croisé avec Kong, ou encore Godzilla contre Kong — une sorte de permutation de titans. Quoi qu'il en soit, il y aura des coups. Nous sommes là pour les coups.

Ce que nous ne sommes pas là pour voir, ce sont les humains, ce qui est chanceux, car ils tombent comme des mouches. La plupart des personnages des derniers films — y compris celui de 2021 “Godzilla vs. Kong” (également réalisé par Adam Wingard) — ont disparu, largement sans explication. Notre personnage principal maintenant est le Dr Ilene Andrews (Rebecca Hall), mère adoptive d'une préadolescente, Jia (Kaylee Hottle), membre de la tribu Iwi, qui communique directement avec Kong par le langage des signes. J'ai particulièrement regretté l'absence du Dr Nathan Lind d'Alexander Skarsgard, dont l'absence est en quelque sorte expliquée mais pas pleurée, et qui a été remplacé, pour des raisons narratives, par un vétérinaire farfelu des titans joué par Dan Stevens. (Pour une raison quelconque, je suppose pour signaler l'excentricité, Stevens arbore un accent australien exagéré.)

Ils sont rejoints une fois de plus par Bernie Hayes (Brian Tyree Henry), le podcaster-blogueur-documentariste-bizarre du dernier film. Pour une raison quelconque, il est convaincu que personne ne croit ses histoires sur les titans, même si le véritable Godzilla erre sur Terre et est montré aux actualités télévisées. (Je suis plus bloqué sur l'idée étrangement fantastique qu'il soit un blogueur populaire. N'aurait-il pas déjà un Substack à présent ?)

Ces humains sont assez ennuyeux, plus anémiques que dans le dernier film. Ils sont là uniquement pour propulser le récit à travers cette histoire, qui commence avec Kong vivant dans la Terre Creuse (exactement ce que ça semble être) et Godzilla à la surface. Tant que les deux ne se rencontrent jamais, tout va bien — et par tout, je veux dire l'humanité.

Ce qui signifie, bien sûr, qu'ils se rencontreront. Les scientifiques repèrent Godzilla en train de faire la sieste dans le Colisée, puis de se frayer un chemin à travers l'Europe et le nord de l'Afrique, absorbant apparemment autant d'énergie nucléaire qu'il le peut car il sent une confrontation arriver. En même temps, quelque chose ne va pas du tout dans le monde de Kong en dessous. Et Jia fait aussi des rêves étranges — des rêves qui mènent à une expédition dans la Terre Creuse.

Ce qui suit est une tentative d'établir beaucoup de mythologie pour la franchise Monsterverse. (Leur terme, pas le mien.) C'est une grosse erreur. Vous pouvez dire que c'est une erreur, parce que toute cette mythologie doit être révélée dans un dialogue explicatif fastidieux. Plus important encore, une fois que vous savez ce qui s'est passé dans le passé, vous savez précisément ce qui va se passer dans le présent, ce qui arrache tout suspense restant au film, ne laissant que les coups. (Tellement de coups.)

D'ailleurs : cette série a-t-elle besoin d'une mythologie ? Godzilla et Kong ont tous deux une riche histoire cinématographique sur laquelle s'appuyer — c'est le 38ème film pour Godzilla et le 13ème pour Kong, et bien qu'ils n'aient pas partagé l'écran jusqu'à récemment, ils apportent tout leur bagage et leur histoire avec eux. Cela ressemble à une tentative désespérée pour la franchise de crossover de justifier à la fois son existence et sa continuation.

Ce qui n'est pas surprenant. Le bilan de cette série donne le tournis. Le film de 2014 “Godzilla”, une sorte de redémarrage de la série originale de Toho mettant en vedette le personnage, était un film légitimement excellent, équilibrant spectacle et pathos humain. Mais ensuite sont venus “Kong: Skull Island” et “Godzilla: Roi des Monstres”, tous deux censés construire un univers partagé, tous deux non seulement mauvais mais vraiment déprimants. Ensuite, il y a eu “Godzilla vs. Kong”, qui n'était pas, techniquement parlant, bon — mais il promettait une confrontation et l'apportait, avec un coda tardif de coopération involontaire et visuellement spectaculaire entre le singe massif et le lézard nucléaire. C'était un plaisir à regarder, surtout parce que le climax arrivait enfin : les deux monstres avaient enfin leur rencontre tant attendue.

Mais avec ce zénith dans le rétroviseur, “Godzilla x Kong : Le Nouvel Empire” n'a plus beaucoup de route à parcourir, et ça se voit. Les meilleurs moments impliquent Kong se déplaçant à travers le paysage, Godzilla piétinant et écrasant des choses, et bien sûr la confrontation finale inévitable, qui réserve quelques surprises. Kong en particulier semble n'avoir aucun problème à communiquer sans langage humain, et ces scènes prolongées sont tellement amusantes à regarder qu'il est décevant de revenir aux humains.

Certes, les humains peuvent être une partie fructueuse de ces films de monstres. Le récent film japonais “Godzilla Minus One”, produit pour une fraction du budget de “Godzilla x Kong” et récipiendaire de l'Oscar des meilleurs effets visuels cette année, parvient à combiner la créature avec un véritable pathos et un accent sur le coût humain de la guerre, de la culpabilité et du traumatisme. Godzilla vs. Kong (2021)

I might’ve been a little starved for blockbusters the first time I saw Godzilla vs. Kong and rated it. In my defense, it was during the pandemic and the other movies I was able to see during lockdown were mostly disappointments. Reviewing the film again, I recognize that the human’s plot is undercooked while everything with the monsters is spectacular. Well, at least the movie knows where its priorities stand and considering what its audience wants to see…

When Godzilla suddenly attacks Apex Cybernetics’ Pensacola facility, conspiracy theorist Bernie Hayes (Brian Tyree Henry) becomes convinced they somehow provoked the titan. Madison Russell (Millie Bobby Brown) - an avid fan of his podcast - shares his suspicions. They rope her friend Josh (Julian Dennison) into investigating and confirm their fears aren't entirely unfounded. After the attack, Apex insists mankind needs to develop a weapon against Godzilla and asks Monarch to give them access to Kong. They believe the titan ape can lead them inside the vast caverns below our world to a power source formidable enough to take down the king of the monsters.

Though Godzilla’s name appears first in the title, this film is about Kong much more than the radioactive dinosaur. It’s a good choice, as the ape is resourceful, an underdog in this fight and intelligent enough to communicate with Monarch via sign language. Godzilla might’ve protected the Earth/humanity in the previous movies, but was it really a heroic character, or was the nuclear reptile just killing its rivals? Kong, on the other hand, has actual human friends. Even though the Iwis we met during Kong: Skull Island have been wiped out (seems like a missed opportunity), Kong still has a link to them in the form of Jia (Kaylee Hottle), a deaf-mute Iwi survivor adopted by Dr. Ilene Andrews (Rebecca Hall). Nonetheless, his situation gives him a very relatable quest: he wants to know if there is a new family for him out there.

One-half of the human's story fares fairly well. With the help of Apex Cybernetics, Dr. Ilene Andrews, along with Jia and hollow-earth scientist Nathan Lind (Alexander Skarsgård) follow Kong into this hidden world beneath our feet that houses all sorts of monsters and an ancient rivalry between Kong and Godzilla (seems wacky, but it does lead to some fun developments). These characters are following Kong on his journey so when the 8th wonder of the world is put in danger, they are too. The other humans, however, feel like they only appear to deliver exposition or to give us some familiar faces. You could easily re-jig this story to remove them.

But of course, you didn't come to this film for the human element. Yes, kaiju films are better when the "tiny" protagonists are compelling, but if there's one aspect of this movie director Adam Wingard had to get right, it was the Godzilla and Kong stuff. I'm happy to say you won't be disappointed. The Titan battles are varied, clearly shot, tense and action-packed. You get three rounds between Kong and Godzilla, with a clear winner at the end that will leave fans of either camp satisfied. I know a lot of purists will say a Godzilla film isn't the same without rubber suits, but this picture does so much with modern special effects. Varied locations, varied angles, moves no human could do, etc. That last brawl in the neon-lit Hong Kong will make you say "wow!".

There have been a lot of Godzilla films since the character appeared. Some have been dramatic, others comedic or somewhere in the middle with an emphasis on dumb fun. None have featured action scenes as good as the ones in Godzilla vs. Kong. Even if you only have a passing interest in the characters, the highlights are strong, strong enough to make you forgive the parts that could've been strengthened. It's not even a guilty pleasure; it's gargantuan fun. (On Blu-ray, March 27, 2024)
