Little Idril gives Turgon the first chamomile flowers in @that-angry-noldo's Flowers sprang beneath his marching feet for @tolkienrsb
This heart-wrenching fic of the arrival of Fingolfin's host to Beleriand and the main art will be revealed tomorrow, September 8, 2023!
Fic snippet below the cut.
Turukáno looked away. Itarillë ran up to him, and her face was bright. She was holding a white flower in her hands, her eyes gleaming with warmth and happiness. Turukáno smiled and tucked a strand of her golden hair behind her ear. A camomile, he explained, mind to mind, and her features lit up. It grows in great numbers during the spring.  Itarillë beamed and ran off, and Turukáno followed her with a soft, fond gaze. He looked back to Findaráto and noticed the same tenderness on his features. “Children,” Findaráto murmured. “In Aman we thought them a blessing; a gem to carve, a fruit to reap. Now, though, I look at your daughter and feel - hope. Your father,” he said, and looked at Turukáno again, “might feel like he lost that. What is the meaning of trying to go on if you have lost the one whose eyes gleamed with fire, who looked forth through the veil of the unending snow and said, “I see hope; I see life; I see, far away, the warmth and the peace that awaits us”? And now, that hope lies buried under the ground, and all we can do is - remember.”

His son was dead. His son was lying still - his expression was as marble, eyes looking to the sky and face drained of colour. If Ñolofinwë tried, he could pretend he never saw the fatal wound that struck Arakáno down, never held him while his son shuddered in agony, never heard Findekáno scream his throat hoarse over the corpse. His son was dead. After the battle of Lammoth and death of Arakáno, Ñolofinwë has to come to terms with the new reallity, and figure out what to do next.
sharing my second @tolkienrsb project, this time done for @melestasflight beautiful art!!

Now a Quill, Now a Sword
Tumblr media
Findekáno could see him writing this letter as clearly as if Maitimo were before him. Sitting with his back straight, head tilted a little, the fingers of his left hand drumming on the table as he pondered over the words. Findekáno could see him opening one of Elemmírë’s poetry books that he always kept on his desk to make sure he had not quoted her poem erroneously, even though he knew all of her works by heart. Findekáno could see Maitimo’s meticulously and richly embroidered sleeve smearing the ink on the sheet. Maitimo would huff in annoyance and roll his sleeves back, then start writing the letter anew. His letters had to be perfect without mistakes or marks.

@mangez-peches-art's sweet art of Húrin and his youngest daugter, Lalaith (laughter), in happy days features in @melestasflight's insightful character biography.
Tumblr media
"[T]he story of Húrin, Túrin, and the dragon Glaurung remains 'a favorite tale among Men,'" writes Melesta in this month's biography of Húrin, "and I would dare say a favorite of Tolkien himself."
This "favorite tale," as Melesta documents, is one of Tolkien's oldest. Many of our character biographies document how a character evolves over the decades and myriad drafts Tolkien wrote in constructing the text that Christopher Tolkien would one day publish as The Silmarillion. Húrin, unlike many of the other early characters, is "an essential and constant thread of the tapestry of the First Age," with essential elements of his story in place from very early in the writing of the legendarium and remaining so.
But Melesta also highlights that, in Húrin, we see the first glimmers of the kind of larger-than-life heroism that would distinguish Tolkien's Third Age writings—namely The Lord of the Rings, of course—from the drearier First and Second Age materials. Yet, of course, Húrin's story comes to a tragic end, making him a fitting part of the "Silmarillion" story while also hinting at the rise of Mortals that would offer such hope later in the tales.
It is the very larger-than-life quality that requires that Húrin's story is best discussed across multiple months, so this month's biography covers the early years of Húrin's life: the making of a hero. So for this month, we can pretend to be a LotR site and enjoy Húrin's defiant hope and role model-worthy heroics before heading back to the tragic culmination of his story. You can read "Part One: The Making of a Hero" of Húrin's biography here, published by @silmarillionwritersguild

an illustration of my favorite scene from @that-angry-noldo's Flowers sprang beneath his marching feet
This beautiful fic and the main art will be live on @tolkienrsb reveals day, September 8, 2023.
Fic snippet below the cut.
Green grass now grew where Ñolofinwë’s son and his people were buried. Arakáno had always loved the colour of green; always loved trees, gardens, and flowers. Sometimes Ñolofinwë thought himself selfish: there were many dead, that dreadful day, many who have lost their parents and friends and lovers, many who were laid in the grave together with Arakáno; yet Ñolofinwë did not remember their faces, did not grieve them, did not mourn for them. Arakáno was the only one who mattered.   Ñolofinwë hoped there were flowers growing on his son’s grave. Wished, uselessly, that Findaráto had sung of field-flowers where Ñolofinwë himself could but weep silently.

This second teaser art is my favorite letter from Maedhros to Fingon from @zealouswerewolfcollector's Now a Quill, Now a Sword.
Can't wait for @tolkienrsb reveals day to have this fic and its main art go live on September 8, 2023.
Fic snippet below the cut.
Faelgûr had put wildflowers on my desk, which is far more accustomed to daggers as a decoration. The poor boy must have walked on tiptoes around me for the entire day, making sure that nothing and no one dared bring me down. These are the exact same flowers you put in my hair the first time you visited Himring. I do not believe my valet is aware of it. It must be a lucky coincidence.  Perhaps that was what made me write this silly letter. Perhaps it was because it had scarcely been a month since you had left my bed, and I can still feel your warmth. Perhaps it was because only five days later I am riding out to Lóminórë to meet you. Whatever it was, it compelled me to share this with you. I know you will enjoy reading it. My letters to you have been little more than dry reports, while yours are so vivacious. You always write something that makes me smile even when I am in the blackest of moods.

Maedhros and Maglor are facing their final challenges in @zealouswerewolfcollector's Now a Quill, Now a Sword.
This fantastic fic and its main art for @tolkienrsb will be live tomorrow, September 8, 2023!
Fic snippet below the cut.
“We should move now if we are intent on doing it.” Maglor’s quiet, discolored voice brought Maedhros back from the maze of his thoughts. He could not bear his brother’s look, cold fury hidden beneath a shroud of nonchalance.  “We shall move when I decide so,” he said. “Of course,” Maglor said in the same tone. “What are you writing?” “It is none of your concern.” “What is the point of writing to him? He will never read it. You are doing it only for yourself. But even that is pointless now.” A slow, mocking smile twisted his face. “Do you hope the letter will be discovered on your body and find its way to him?” Maedhros was shaken by Maglor quoting his letter almost word by word. But his brother was not done yet. “Do you hope he will read it and shed a few tears over you?” he continued. “Do you hope he will be moved by your letter and forgive you? He may not even be allowed to leave the Halls until the world breaks. He is a kinslayer just like us.” “Hold your tongue!” Maedhros roared. “He was nothing like us!” “Yes, of course, pure and innocent Fingon, incapable of any wrongdoing.” “I said hold your tongue!” “As you command, my lord.”

an illustration of a letter from Now a Quill, Now a Sword by @zealouswerewolfcollector for @tolkienrsb
We can't wait to reveal the main art and this beautiful story on September 8, 2023!
Fic snippet below the cut.
Northern Coast of the Outer Sea, 1450th Year of the Trees Dearest cousin [mentions of our kinship should be avoided] Beloved Finno [too intimate] My dearest Findekáno [he is not mine yet] Dearest Findekáno, So long has passed since our last encounter. I was away from Tirion with my family. My father was looking for inspiration for a new invention of his. It was fortunate as I had much to think about. If my calculations are correct, I shall be at home by the time this letter reaches you. I hope the wait was not too torturous for you. I wish I could put on the page all that I want to say to you. It would be easier, perhaps, yet I cannot deny myself the pleasure of looking at your face when we speak.  Please come to the grove at the Mingling. I will be eagerly waiting for you. If your feelings have changed during this time, or if I have misinterpreted your words somehow, I apologize for the letter. Do not hesitate to burn it then. I will not take offense and will continue being your devoted friend and cousin. Until we meet again. Maitimo

A Swim Somewhere in the East
Maglor's view: Daeron emerges from the waters in the pool of a waterfall.
Illustration of Hearken Still Unsated by @polutrope for @tolkienrsb 2022.
Summary:
“For how many years," he asks, "have we two listened for the echoes of the Music of Creation in the oceans and lakes and rivers? And yet we will never be sated. Like the water in which they say it lives, the Song does not rest but ever moves and changes. It may pool in a great lake for an age and then pour down into the Sea in another. It fills whatever spaces it can and flows by whatever paths most easily open before it.”
The Music unfolds strangely, even for those who can hear it most clearly. From a return home to a return to each other: Daeron, Maglor, and everything that stands between them.
