"‘Trans man’ remains the preferred identity for Malaysian individuals who were Assigned female at birth but live their adult lives as men. The jettison-ing of pondan, pak nyah, wanita keras, tomboy and pengkid in favour of ‘trans man’ likely serves as a ratification of personal-communal empowerment and a repudiation of derision. It is even more likely that ‘trans man’ reflects a deep-seated desire to imitate and participate in ‘collective identifcation’, notably that which is cultivated in North American (and European) contexts, ‘in order to demand rights, equal citizenship, and welfare’ among other goals in Malaysia. This is hardly surprising. Technological advances facilitate unprecedented accessibility to copious resources on transgender issues and imagine a global transgender community in borderless solidarity. Travis S. K. Kong points out however, that ‘globalization is an uneven process that reproduces spatially uneven development, and the flow of capital, commodities, people, images, and ideas is never equal among locations’.
The Malaysian trans man thus experiences unequal and unstable access to the bounty of globalisation due to local limitations in education, economic means, social and cultural capital, class, ethnicity, religious affliation, educational levels, infrastructure and health services. He continues to be experience ‘disjunctive modernities’ which exhibit ‘irreducible plurality and local specifcity’, thus dispelling the myth of trans(national) homogeneity in transgender identity. The trans men I interviewed interpret their life stories through the rubric of local contexts that dispel any suspicion of a mere mimicry of western-styled transgender identities. Malaysian re/mouldings of ‘trans man’ speak to ‘experiences of multiplicity in gender identifcation … embedded within specifc social, cultural, and interpersonal contexts [that] create altogether new, emergent forms of experience and identity'."

the opposite (ie charles's paddock presence to daniel) being a imo very undervalued part of the story
Could you expand on this please? 🖤
daniel talked about this a couple of times but this is from his twitter in 2020:
jules and daniel had been friends since 2007. they became close after meeting in junior series in italy. jules was one of the first friends daniel made after leaving australia by himself to try and make it in europe. and even though jules was slightly (a month i think) younger, daniel always talks about how all the young drivers, himself included, looked up to jules and already treated him as an f1 driver. jules' passing had a huge impact on daniel. he only talked about it in public a handful of times but in his words, it affected him "more than I ever would have thought".
on the other hand. besides everyone saying charles has the looks, personality, humility, mannerisms, and even driving styles just like jules (who was charles' godfather), charles followed jules' footsteps almost exactly. jules was who ferrari had in mind to replace kimi. supposedly their plan was for jules to race for sauber the following season. both of which charles was able to follow through after jules' passing.
there's not a lot else on this but we do know daniel sees jules in charles and charles thinks of being compared to jules 'the best compliment i could get'. i think (hope) they both find consolation in this knowledge ❤️
(daniel writing "forever in my heart #17" on his hat at the 2015 hungarian gp. later he dedicated his 2016 malaysian gp victory to jules.)

It’s June 20th, which means I can finally reveal my labour of love for the Represent Zine on @allsparkzines!
I chose to focus on the Caminus Valkyries--Windblade, Lightbright and Chromia who are TTB’s elite Girl Gang!
Lightbright took centrestage because I wanted to showcase a part of my culture as a Malaysian through her Minang heritage and outfit, which utilized batik-style motifs and elements of Minangkabau architecture for her mantle/shoulderpads.
The ornate frame and more delicate inkwork is is Art Noveau-inspired, and you get your first glimpse into the floating Venusian city of Caminus, which is very Asia-Centric with strong elements from Chinese and Indo-Malaysian architecture.
The bronze statue is that of Shu Lin Pei/Solus Prime wielding her hammer in one hand and a flame in the other which is said to have been taken from her forge from the Quintesson War era and has been burning ever since.
Those with the title ‘Mistress Of The Flame’ are entrusted with the care of this flame that they hope to keep burning eternally as a symbol of her and their indomitable spirit.
I was also assigned to create a cover for the IDW section, which you can find here!
Today is the last day for you to get YOUR copy of Represent, so head over to @allsparkzines and get yours from their BigCartel!
(As usual, please full view if you’re on desktop!)

TS4 - Nasi Lemak
D E C O R A T I O N
Nasi lemak is a dish originating in Malay cuisine that consists of fragrant rice cooked in coconut milk that is traditionally served with anchovies, cucumbers, peanuts, and boiled eggs. The dish is rounded up with the addition of a spicy chili paste called sambal.
Although originally invented as a breakfast dish, soon it surpassed its original purpose and became the Malaysian national dish which can be eaten at any time.
