The Last Hours of a Herondale

Words:2k
Pairing: Matthew Fairchild x Fem!Herondale
I walked out on a fast pace without turning back or waiting for my brother's Parabatai. I was wearing my own coat now as I strolled down the alley to get on the bridge and find my way to the institute.
"He just worries you know" I heard, I could see Matthew walking behind me with the side of my eye, he was still holding his extravagant coat in hand. "And can you please stop rushing on my account I will get my alcohol, therefore I wish this was more scenic" Matthew joked. I admired the way he used his vocabulary always, sobber or not. I listened to his wish, my arms crossed across my torso, I was making this gesture to highlight my fury, although if I am being frank I was shivering to the freezing temperature of London.
"Didn't sincerely seemed like he was concerned about me, more like he did not have the mood to hear our father whine about his daughter to be wandering alone helpless in the streets of this horrific city, As if I am a damsel in distress." I barked, my nerves were still tense, I was too angry to concentrate on anything.
Matthew didn't reply immediately, he touched my shoulders carefully to place his coat on me, he observed my being cold. I tensed and reflexively turned to face him, shocked, not so much because of his gesture but with the fact that I felt as if I would see something. I always looked chill with my charisma therefore I was freaking out most of the time internally. "Do not worry, I know. It is not nice to watch another broken past." He assured me and I exhaled relieved lightly and placed my arms on the sleeves while he tied the belt around my waist gently.
"Its never the past that gets me unnerved. Even though I think I witness the worse of you every time you drink alcohol." I spoke and looked at him. I rarely seen his eyes so upclose. They were green, darker as if the reasons that got him drunk every day and night had shaded his eyes too.
"And what unnerves you?" He asked me. Despite the instability of his voice that seemed so familiar since he was more drunk than sober.
"When I see the future, I have only seen it a few times. Three to be honest." I spoke and looked elsewhere, I was scared to look for his comment or his eye contact, these were things I avoided speaking of, barely mentioned them to my parents. "I will get going it gets colder" I excused myself, expecting him into offering to escort me.
"I was leaving anyway, my beautiful bottle is right down this way." Matthew spoke and walked away from me. I smiled and started walking down the bridge.
The way there was peaceful and calming, I was gazing at the cloudy sky trying to make out at least a small, tiny star but the rain that started a few minutes ago was getting stronger. It felt nice, the droplets on the coat and on my hair made me colder but the feeling was refreshing as the wind blew as well. I placed my hand to the bottom of my chaotic braided bun and set it loose into the two braids and I started loosing them as well.
I was so peaceful and calm. Forgot about my fight with James, the vision of Polly, the demon splatter and the times I saw James disappear and Matthew almost lose his life. I opened the door and walked in unknown of the mess I was in. I hoped I wouldn't meet anyone. I only went inside Lucie's room, I hoped she would be awake. I knocked the door.
"Come in" her sweet voice sounded and poked my head in. "What happened to you? Where is James?" she asked, her voice sketched with concern as well as her expression, she stood up from her desk and approached me. We were the same height even though she was two years younger than me. Her hand got my wrist and pulled me inside her room. "If mama and papa see you, you'll scare them to death." She spoke.
"Nothing happened, we only killed a demon." I replied and threw my boots next to the door and walked to her mirror to witness myself the big deal. I, indeed looked horrible, my light brown hair were wet and filled with mud that made them stick together and my face had dirt as the rain spilled the light make up I wore. "James made it explode." I sighed.
"And why are you wearing Math's clothes?" she asked me. "You are shaking..." she noticed.
I smiled subconsciously as I took off the coat and let it fall on the ground. "He accompanied me up to a point on my way home and I was cold." I explained briefly as I started taking off the heavy and wet equipment. "Could I use your bathroom? I do not feel comfortable being on my own." I added with false hopes that she would not start the curiosity drill of questions.
"Why? What happened?" Lucie asked me as she assisted me, with great care to not trigger any seizure, to take off the rest of the equipment until I was with the underskirt.
"Nothing in particular." I spoke as I took her comb and started untangling the mass in my head trying to remove as much of mud as possible. I felt my sister's gaze upon my back and let out a sigh. She probably was the only person I was unable to keep secrets from. I was a pretty cold person therefore Lucie can read me, even though my pages are always blank. "Alright, I fought with James before I left. I was certainly right with my arguments. Perhaps, I was a bit harsh." I explained.
"Oh do not even worry, he won't remember it in the morning..." Lucie smiled lightly. "This is why you came here. To cover for him, so mom and dad won't know you returned alone?" her smile got bigger. She is such a sweet angel. When me and James fight she is more sad than we are. 'You are twins, you can't talk to each other like that, you are supposed to be two of a whole' she usually quotes and tries to stop our conflict which most of the time plays out into a best sarcastic comeback battle as we actually forgot what we fought about.
"You really think so?" I asked lightly and then walked into her bathroom as I started washing the mud from my face.
"Do you remember what you fought for?" asked Lucie and my smile disappeared lightly. "Well, since it is this serious, tell me about it." She encouraged me and I exhaled unwilling to so.
"Do not tell mama and papa... James started disappearing during the battle... It was a close call for me and Math, and especially for Math... After we killed it, we went at that stupid tavern they hang out... And I had a seizure with flashback. So we were kind of on edge both of us." I unriddle the events of the night as I filled the tub with water.
"I don't think you are worried that you spoke harsh to James. You are simply upset. Come on. Have your shower and I will get you some tea and then I can tell you about my book, so you take your mind off." Lucie giggled and I nodded with soft smile. I winked and nodded before she closed the door of the bathroom.
~
I came out of the tub and saw that my sister brought pajamas and underwear, freshly washed, they smelled vanilla and sandal wood. The clothes were mine. I wore them and walked out to the bed where I saw her laying with a book. "Feeling better?" she asked me and I nodded.
I climbed next to her on the bed and placed the book aside with a smile as she took her brush and removed the towel. Lucie began to brush my hair. I have curly and long hair, longer than hers, with the color of my father's while I had my mom's eyes, deep gray. The brush met a comb and she abruptly untangled it making me jump.
"I am careful, you know that" Lucie reassured me with a sweet smile, she knew I was anxious.
I didn't really felt when I fell asleep, I hugged Lucie's stuffed animal. Tomorrow would be a great day, the Carstairs would arrive. I was happy to see them, to see Daisy and Alastair again. I was probably the only one who found Alastair likeable but this didn't really matter, he didn't seem to care that much to converse with anyone. Us Herondales have a special place for the Carstairs family in our hearts. My father's parabatai was a Carstairs, uncle Jem became a silent brother under awful circumstances while he was on his death bed owing to a demons doings. I cannot imagine how my father was feeling back then, I do not have a parabatai like James has and like Lucie will soon have. I have a close relationship with Barbara and Anna Lightwood but none of them to a point to have such eternal and unbreakable bond.
Uncle Jem must be the only person I can talk to about the visions I see and not feel like a freak. The whole clave looks at me and my brother as if we are some kind of unexpressed danger against the Nephelim race. Even my mother and father are uncomfortable when we speak about it. Perhaps it is in my head. Uncle Jem always knows what to tell me to ease me and not make me feel... different from everyone else. Speaking of whom I had to summon him, I was obliged to report to him every single vision I had as well as the conditions it came under.
"Lina..." I heard in my sleep as I felt a soft shake. I turned around ignoring the voice and this is when the blanket was pulled violently from my figure. "Lina!"
"What!" I exclaimed disturbed and shot up.
"Get dressed we have to get breakfast the Carstairs will be here soon" Lucie spoke as she was literally jumping up and down on her mattress.
"Is James back?" I asked her.
"Yes he is." James replied and I turned my head to see our brother sitting in the arm chair on Lucies room, it was next to the pile of my dirty clothes.
"Oh Good morning" I greeted and sat up and leaned to the bedframe as I stared at him. The gash on his hand was fully healed and he looked well and rested.
"Oh Good morning to you too" He chimed therefore his expression was just like mine dead serious as we only stared at each other. I could sense Lucie darting her gaze between us.
"Now come on you two..." Lucie began when a ghost appeared in the middle of the room.
"Oh look at the two naughty Herondales following their father's footsteps once again. Stubborn as donkeys!" Jessamine floated in the room.
"Ah great, here were the commentary again." I spoke inside my teeth.
"Jealous much Lina? At least the ghost can form more ingenious sentences than you." James smiled at me. The revenge begun.
"At least the ghost has the intelligence to think before they speak nonsense." I smiled back, Lucie was saying we had the same facial features, even our teeth and expressional wrinkles were the same, everything except our eye-color. He had brown eyes, I had gray.
"At least the ghost has manners!" Jessamine whined at us. "Like father, they say..." she sighed and floated to the edge dramatically.
"Does she though?" James asked Jessamine and she turned her attention to him, her expression puzzled.
"You really do just barge in a room, that is really not lady like." I commented with a fake frown, my posture was suddenly fixed as I was remarking the good manners that my father always said were more important than anything else. She was the last Lovelace of her family name and now she was haunting my house.
"Uh Tessie really left your upbringing to Will didn't she?" Jessamine huffed in annoyance when my father opened the room.
"She indeed did, Jess. Aren't they adorably charming?" My father asked as he looked at us his eyes were smiling.
"So adorably charming that they get on my nerves almost as much as you do Herondale." Jessamine spoke up.
"Then I did a wonderful job." He smiled lightly and sat down on the bed next to me. "How did the hunt go? You must have returned late huh?" Will asked us. I could see his gaze searching for injuries or any sign that needed his attendance or an iratze.
"It went well actually. We found a Deumas demon" James spoke and then my father looked at me.
"And? What happened?" Will asked us, I could sense his enthusiasm.
"Well at first I was up the building watching Matthew and James. And they struggled a bit, so I thought I would step in." I smiled proudly and felt James' eyes on me.
"Yes, Lina stepped in and saved Math's ass..." James spoke and our mom stepped in.
"James! Language." She noticed and allowed him to keep going.
"She used the whip and injured it and lured it away from Math but then it cornered her and thankfully Thomas was there and assisted Lina." James continued and smiled at me.
"James recovered from the hit and he tried to kill it at first but then he had a gash on the hand during this attempt so me and Thomas kept it in line when my bright twin came slashed it and filled us with ichor and blood." I finished the story.
"And then we stayed at Devil's Tavern for a drink." James spoke up and looked at me.
"Or eight?" I lied with a giggle.
"Eight? Linette!" My mother exclaimed and made a move to touch my forehead and I pulled myself from the way.
"I am fine mom, I do not have temperature or something. I was only a bit dizzy and Luce offered to brew some lemon balm with anice to sooth my stomach." I exclaimed. They knew I was uncomfortable with physical contact.
"I was with her as well. And so were the boys its really not big deal, or the first time it happens" James tried to cover for me but he earned an almost infuriated gaze from our father.
"Well it isn't that bad..." Lucie intervened.
"Well I was celebrating the demon victory. And then I got entinced by the drunks around me?" I smiled and my father shook his head. "I know I am a girl and I shouldn't- ." I started off and then saw my parents exchange a look.
"Lina... It is not that. Honestly I couldn't care less what each one of those pretentious Clave members has to say about me, my wife, my children or my parabatai. Both me and your mother have been through the gossiping and it doesn't real phase us, it never did. We just want you to be safe." My father spoke and carefully took my hand I exhaled as I realized I was still wearing gloves.
"I don't see you preaching my twin about these. But anyway, I see your points and your concerns." I spoke and gave him a light smile and removed my hand. If you'll excuse me. I must get prepared for breakfast." I excused myself to go to my room. I didn't know how I felt and suddenly I wasn't in the mood of socializing either. Even if it was with the Carstairs.

After letting this book stew in the back of my mind a couple days, I've come to add some more points that I was thinking about after I first managed to unload most of my thoughts.
i. In one of the many examples of characters telling each other how much they've changed, Thomas tells Alastair that Alastair is not the same he was before. That Alastair wouldn't have rushed to help Thomas when he was arrested. Wouldn’t have followed Thomas the first place and to make sure he was safe. The person Alastair used to be wouldn’t have looked after Matthew and wouldn’t be reading book after book about paladins to try to help his sister. The first two, three points I can agree on, but that last part. Either Thomas knows nothing about Alastair and Cordelia's relationship, or the writing knows nothing about Alastair who did his everything so Cordelia had happy childhood with a loving father without the darkness behind it all. Seriously.
ii. In the end, it is told that Anna and Ari are looking to adopt kid(s) because there are many Nephilim orphans. Thomas and Alastair talk how they will never get to have kids, but it is never addressed why they couldn't adopt also.
iii. Jesse trains vigorously in order to build up strength, James is looking to train with someone else than Matthew. Why do we never see any adult Shadowhunters train in the series? As if they do not need to maintain and preserve their skills and strength.
iv. James and Alastair never conclude their feud or arrive to a truce.
v. James and Grace never arrive to any conclusion either with each other.
vi. James' story was so tied to Cordelia, Matthew, and Belial that all the other conflicts that were previously introduced weren't properly concluded. Just because James tells Cordelia he isn't angry and no longer cares or thinks about that stuff, in the narrative sense they still remain open with the characters he does not even interact with.
vii. Additionally to the Lightwoods not getting to grieve their children: When Gideon and Sophie appeared at the Iron Tombs, the writing didn't acknowledge them any more than making them present. No reaction, no emotion, nothing that even remotely touched the fact that their nephew had just died by Tatiana, that Gabriel and Cecily have now gone through the same incredibly awful loss as they had right before.
viii. There is similar passiveness in the narrative seen in Queen of Air and Darkness: When Robert has died, Alec rises from beside Robert's body and basically throws himself at Magnus, but Magnus isn't a participant in the action/has no reaction (for instance, doesn't hold Alec or embrace him back). When Isabelle cries because of Robert's death, she is sitting on a couch with Alec and is clinging to him and sobbing against his shoulder, but Alec, like Magnus in that scene mentioned above, isn't written doing anything. His lack of action (for instance, holding his arms around Isabelle or consoling her) just gives the image of him passively sitting there while Isabelle cries her heart out. Similarly Gabriel does have no reaction to Alex's kidnapping, he just holds Cecily who does. But then Cecily or Gabriel aren't allowed to have reaction to Kit actually dying.
ix. Cecily's absence in the final battle could be read as that she remained in Idris because of Alexander (and Kit's death), but having no mention of her or how she is fairing in the rest of the book is just insanely callous.
x. Lucie's secret about the ghosts in their parabatai ceremony rehearsal came out of nowhere since Lucie never really did show any apprehension for any reason becoming parabatai with Cordelia?
xi. The characters are once again attracted to each other's appearance.
xii. Anna's "slim curves" being a constant aspect told about her looks.
xiii. Why is that the Herondale kids (excluding the other part of the pair) are the only ones to have parabatai? It's so strange that such concept as parabatai is "rare" among the Nephilim when they could just benefit greatly from warrior partners who can draw strength from one another, draw stronger runes on one another, and just in general be stronger in battles.
xiv. Thomas is constantly comparing himself to James and Matthew (and no one else) :/ Wonder why...
xv. What meaningful thing did Matthew's character actually do as to the plot in this book? He had no integral part other than being James' voice after James is being possessed by Belial.
xvi. Why was the Blackthorn sword such a huge deal anyway? Wasn't there suppose to be a name for it?
xvii. Jesse's "stolen" runes are never addressed again, neither whether he got them stripped. Which either way raises the question of whether Shadowhunters stripped from their runes (which is told to be a painful procedure) and send into exile could have then reapplied just as well? Could someone like Edmund Herondale who was stripped of his Marks technically become a Shadowhunter once more?
xviii. Why were Lucie's and James' respective powers tied to Belial himself? Belial had no use for Lucie and says as such that he holds no interest over her. Why there is no actual consequence of having 1/4 of Greater Demon blood since their powers disappeared with Belial?
xix. Similarly to Gabriel and Cecily, Kit and Grace had more authentic build-up to a possible relationship whereas all the others were incredibly fabricated and contrived.
xx. There was an illustration (collector's first edition) of Cordelia holding the ice sword. It was supposed to be a tease for the readers waiting for the publication of the book, but then it was just one scene and didn't even really matter even though Cordelia slew Tatiana in Lilith's name.
xxi. Jesse berates and blames Grace for having a choice and making the wrong one as to the whole bracelet mess, but what would've become of Grace had she refused? This is never thought of or addressed by anyone, the least by Jesse. No one but Kit was interested in Grace's victimhood and healing.
xxii. Jesse and Grace's relationship is just left unaddressed the rest of the book (Aside that everyone is looking for James to know how to feel their independent feelings and ganging up on her) after Jesse gets mad at her. They become closer once more towards the end but the writing still rather leaves all things unsaid, so unconcluded.
xxiii. Alastair doesn't bond with anyone else than Thomas. Everyone is doing their missions with their romantic partners because that's how things always go in this series. Why care about mixing things up a bit and have different character interactions?
xxiv. Things that disappeared from previous installment: Ari's wish to befriend Grace, Grace's secret about Tatiana wanting her to seduce Jesse, the rumor/supposition/fact that Grace was bought by Tatiana.
xxv. James barely, if at all, grieves Kit or acknowledges his passing. Cordelia is the same. Matthew does a few times. Thomas was the only one to carry Kit's death with him to the end. It was absurd how quickly Kit's death was brushed aside. He didn't even get a funeral nor even as little as a mention of such.
xxvi. Kit and Grace would've become revolutionary inventors in the Shadowhunter spheres but that would've been too powerful, I guess. (Also great how the only big character described as not conventionally attractive dies??)
xxvii. James and Cordelia's relationship leans heavily on previously established feelings and lacks substance and chemistry, just words and physical desire.
xxviii. If Cordelia's bond with Lilith is ended the moment Belial dies by her blade, then how was she able to heal James with paladin sword?
xxix. Do all the protagonist need to go dimension-hopping as if not to be lesser than the previous ones? No matter, the TMI gang still holds the crown since they've been to Edom and Diyu. TID zero.
xxx. I'm assuming Clare thought it was better that Alec descended from Alex (just assuming since I don't yet know what the "real" family tree looks like), probably also because Kit and Grace don't have the HERONDALE HAIR and obviously their children possibly couldn't.
xxxi. All the unnecessary things in this book greatly outweigh the necessary ones. I don't see any re-read value in any of this. And I still don't know what the series name refers to.

theories for chain of thorns
i had these posted on my gr from like december, im just posting them here
- lucie will now be an antagonist lets be honest we all know it. necromancers are NOT good people and thats the path lucie chose for herself by wanting to save jesse
- someone major will die idk who it is yet, but my instincts tell me its matthew or alistair. the second wouldnt make sense tho – if alistair dies, how would the carstairs line continue down to emma??? hopefully itll be tatiana that bitch
- jamie x daisy its inevitable guys, have you seen the snippets? im rooting for them theyre perfect
- thomas and alistair are NOT gonna end up together this was a gut feeling when i wrote it but as of jan 5 i have a legible reason as to why they would not be happy and its the next theory
- IM SCARED THOMAS IS GONNA DIE the “found family tree” says that thomas died TWO YEARS before barbara. i understand cassie has repeatedly stated that its been manipulated (she hinted that it was changed by the silent brothers) and isnt reliable. but isnt that disturbing?? esp considering theres at least part of it thats reliable, and thats the fact that alistair will 100% go on to marry a woman despite being gay. if alistair doesnt have kids, and cordelias children are all herondales, then the carstairs family would die out and emma would not be related to jem (even tho its been stated that they are related by blood). “oH bUt SoNa iS pReGnAnT mAyBe ShEs GoNnA GiVe BiRtH tO a bOy” first of all, theres a chance the baby is born a girl second of all, the baby might die third of all, where is the son on the family tree? fourth of all, SONA IS, ACCORDING TO THE TREE, DEAD BEFORE THOMAS. PLEASE.
- grace x christopher i despise grace but she acts like a different person around kit… maybe he can fix her
- anna x ariadne she cant fuck up ALL the gay relationships, now can she?
- the merry thieves are gonna forgive alistair (specifically matthew) bro he literally made out with one of them TWICE. if matthew doesnt think “well shits gonna get awkward if i dont forgive the sorry bastard” istg~ 💀
- this is more of a hope than a theory MATTHEW FAIRCHILD SHALL ACHIEVE THE HAPPINESS HE DESERVES smth tells me he wont get a happy ending tho… i mean, if my above theory abt thomas is correct~
- SO DOES ALISTAIR I MEAN CMON GUYS #justiceforalistair he regrets the shit hes pulled and therefore your hate against him for it is invalid PLUS HE GOT BULLIED BY RACIST PIECES OF SHIT HE DID WHAT HE COULD TO MAKE IT STOP
- matthew will open up abt his secret its like a routine at this point, in every shadowhunters series. a character has a secret that nearly kills them outta despair, they open up to friends, theyre met with love and support. jace loving his “sister”. wills “curse”. emma and jules’ relationship. ty bringing back livvy. alec being gay. you get used to it lol
- either lucie or matthew would have their marks stripped lucie for attempting/committing necromancy, and matthew because sobh said he doesnt have a specified death date (also i think cassie just hates him)
- jesse will be evil bro wouldnt that be cruel… like imagine after lucie brings him back hes like “haha i manipulated you to bring me back i never loved you” and then sHe GETS HER RUNES STRIPPED FOR NECROMANCY and its worse bc the shadowhunters are already out to get the herondales bc they refuse to accept tessa as anything but a warlock no but in that case she would prolly go to live with wills parents OKAY BUT IMAGINE HOW HEARTBROKEN CHARLOTTE WOULD BE WHILE DOING IT WHILE JAMIE IS CRYING AND MATTHEW SCREAMING AT HER NOT TO AND WILL TELLS HIM TO STOP WHILE TEARS ARE GOING DOWN HIS FACE
- a “seven husbands of evelyn hugo” thing with anna x ariadne and thomas x alistair (credit to my good friend wiz/nisha for saying this) maybe cassie is going to have thomas marry ariadne and anna marry alistair so that they could have a good old switcheroo, so they can swap lovers?? obviously it cant be anna and thomas lmao theyre cousins but thomas and ARIADNE…
- matthew and cordelia ARE going to kiss at one point HOL’ UP I DONT SHIP EM, i think its gonna be a climon kinda thing where they kiss and dont like it as much as they thought they would, and end up deciding to stay friends i think thats the best way cassie could deal with matthews crush on her without breaking anyones heart, i hope to god it wont be like him confessing and her rejecting him plz oml

Can you write prompt 32 or 65 for luciexjesse??
Ahh, I love Jesse and Luciee!! I tried really hard to do them justice in this fic, but I also wanted to write about Lucie’s new internal conflicts now that she’s separated from her family. I also thought I might as well use both prompts because I’m horrible at making decisions. Hope you enjoy!:
Prompts: “I’d rather be here” &  “I was worried about you”
Ship: Lucie x Jesse
The thing about dreams is that they’re conjurings of the uncontrolled mind. Dreams are free and abide by no laws. They take strange forms, shifting and molding into things that can be beautiful or harrowing, lovely or tragic. They can be both based on fiction or reality; there are no limits when the mind is liberated to conjure as it desires. Lucie’s dreams have always been occult, abstract in the way one might describe a meticulous painting in a gallery hall. She usually got ideas for her novels from her dreams, as their strangeness is perfect inspiration. It was like a wooden table: the idea was there, all she had to do was sand it down, paint and varnish it.
Now, however, her dreams have taken a different form. Cruel, malicious, utterly wicked. Her dreams are whispers of her family, memories, corrupted by an unknown source of evil. Her father carried her on his shoulders, her mother kissed her feet when she was a baby, her brother held her hand as they walked barefoot through the mossy floor of the Brocelind forest, to go to their cousins’ houses.
But they were tainted with shadows. Will would suddenly let go of her and let her tumble to the floor, not caring if she was harmed. Tessa would look down at her in disappointment and walk away. James would tear his arm from her’s and run, trying to get away. She would run after him, but her legs wouldn’t let her. She’d reach Aunt Cecily and Uncle Gabriel’s house only to have them slam the door in her face and shut the curtains. She'd run.
Away from her family that despised her so. She ran through time until, suddenly, she was thirteen. She was running in a meadow with Cordelia. Her dark red hair was like a proud, silk banner as it flew in the wind. Her strides were long and her brown skin glowed under the sunlight. She turned to Lucie and her face filled with pain.
“Why didn't you tell me? We were supposed to be sisters and parabatai.”
“We are, Daisy.” Lucie said through tears. “We are sisters.”
Cordelia shook her head, she began disappearing. “We used to be.”
Lucie screamed Cordelia’s name, but her glorious presence winked away in the blink of an eye.
She saw Thomas and Christopher in the distance, but they couldn’t see her. They were talking about her, about what horrible thing she’d done.
Lucie clasped her hands over her ears, willing their voices away until she was a shadow, without life or power.
She heard a song being sung by a soft, deep voice. She opened her eyes and saw a boy with sea green eyes and curling brown hair. He tucked a smaller boy who shared his same features into bed and kissed his cheek. She watched in wonder as he turned off the lights of other rooms, saying a final goodnight to three other children, all of which—minus another boy—shared a similar appearance to him. As he walked down the hall, Lucie followed, wondering where his parents were. He went into what she assumed was his room and closed the door. Lucie watched him stand there, staring at where his hands were, bracing against the wood. She watched him slowly turn and press his back to the door and slide down until he was sitting on the ground. And then, he began to choke on dry tears.
Lucie was taken aback. She looked at the young boy and wanted to do something. To help him. He was so lonely. She put her hand in his hair and he looked up quickly, in surprise.
Lucie wanted to kneel down next to the boy and tell him it was alright and that she would help him, but she was torn away from him. She cried out, not knowing why her heart cracked at the prospect of leaving this familiar looking boy alone. The pain was so great she slipped out of her unconscious state.
Lucie felt her eyes flutter open, light bursting across her vision, blinding her and causing her to close them again. She reached for her other senses. She could hear the sea birds squawking and waves crashing against each other and the sand. She felt the sunlight warm her right arm and the soft material of bedding under her. She smelled the salt in the air, that is found only by the seaside. She tasted nothing though.
Finally she began opening her eyes slowly, allowing them to adjust to the light. She saw a pattern on the ceiling, of the beams that held the roof up. The walls were cream colored and the house (or cottage?, Lucie wasn’t quite sure.)
Her line of vision began descending down the walls and she noticed the house must be rounded and small. She saw a boy, bent over in worry, his hands pushing his crow, black hair back, eyes closed and elbows rested on the bed. His eyebrows were furrowed and he had bluish bags under his eyes, as though he hadn’t slept well in a long time.
Lucie couldn’t help but admire how he was solid. She could almost reach out a touch the back of his neck—
His head shot up, and his vibrant green eyes danced as he saw her.
“Lucie,” Jesse said, coming close and leaning over her. There was relief written all over his face and his hands were soft and calloused as they brushed her hair away from her face. “I was worried about you.”
“I’m alright, Jesse.” Lucie said, her voice soft and raspy from disuse.
He kissed her forehead and murmured her name over and over. Lucie closed her eyes and breathed in his scent and basked in his presence.
She’d done it. Her Jesse was no longer a phantom, a whisper of life. He was living and breathing and he was healthy. He wasn’t disappearing, not anymore.
“Jesse,” She gasped, pressing her lips to his neck and feeling the pulse of his heart on them. “Jesse, I can’t believe you’re alive.”
He pulled back and looked into her face. He was so beautiful, she’d forgotten how beautiful he was until she saw him again. Her dreams, her imagination, paled to how he was in real life. The way his eyes softened and his shoulders seemed to lean in her direction, like he wanted to hold her in his arms until the end of time. Yes, she had shamefully omitted those things from her memory. But now, she could see them, now they were here for her to adore and love.
“I can’t believe you’re awake,” he replied.
Lucie felt her breath shudder. “Where are we?”
“Cornwall. We’re in Malcolm’s cottage.” Jesse said.
Lucie felt her eyebrows scrunch involuntarily.
“You want to leave, don’t you?” Jesse said quickly, despair clear in his voice. “You want to go back to London with everybody else, which makes complete sense. Of course you’d rather—”
“Jesse.” Lucie said, “I’d rather be with you.”
Jesse looked at her, confused which, Lucie couldn’t help but notice, was very adorable.
“Of course, I want to be with my family, but I want you to be with me. I don’t want to go back if you’re not there beside me.”
“Lucie, you don’t have to say that to spare my feelings. I understand why you’d want to go back—”
“Are you joking, Jesse Blackthorn?”
“What?”
“I literally raised you from the dead because I couldn’t stand the thought of not being with you, of you living a half life while I lived a full one. I did that because I love you! How could you imagine that I’d just abandon you after all of this?”
“If I come back to London, the entire enclave will know that you performed necromancy to bring me back to life and you’ll be imprisoned and I executed. And this time, we won’t come back from death. You could have a better life than this, Lucie.”
“A better life? How is that any better than being dead? I’ll be miserable and I’ll have to lie to everyone I know about what I did. And live with my parents until I die, because I know that I could never love anyone else if it’s not you.” Lucie felt drops of water on her skin and realized tears rolling down her face. “I love you, Jesse! How many times do I have to tell you that before you start believing it?”
Jesse reached out to brush her tears away. “I love you too, Lucie.” His voice thick, as though he were holding back his own tears.
“Then let us stay together, forever. No matter who tries to come between us, we remain by each other’s side. Because I can be scorned at and thrown into prison, and I will be happy, as long as you are by my side.”
Jesse leaned in and they shared the sweetest of kisses. Lucie felt something she’d never felt before; the start of a new beginning. A story where she’ll be the protagonist and not the narrator. Yes, this would be a fine adventure, even if it’ll be difficult.

I think you could definitely be a Carstairs!! Not just because of the powerful but empathetic women like Cordelia & Emma, but because you’re also capable of making us all cry with your posts like Alastair & that postman
I’m in a really weird situation with tlh families myself actually, because my family is literally e x a c t l y like the Herondales: my dad has Wills sense of humour & my mum is the kind of person you wouldn’t think would join in but secretly 100% would. My little sister is basically an introverted Lucie - we all think she’ll end up an author when she’s older, specifically of children’s books because she’s a great storyteller/writer. I’m a girl, but I’m pretty much a carbon copy of academy!James (although cool, leader James no), I’m definitely oblivious enough & have some imposter syndrome around whether my friends actually want/need me around, but I too am a complete book (& science!) nerd - my whole family are
(Bonus horrifying point is that I live in the uk and had childhood friends through my parents called James, Thomas, Matthew, Lucy, Charlotte & Will - my name is Daisy)
Anyway I’m sorry for derailing the ask, I’m just thrown off every time I read about them, I feel like that Leonardo DiCaprio pointing meme & it’s super weird for me when people call Will a dilf
1, thank you my love i appreciate YOU
2. HELLO DAISY HOW DOES IT FEEL TO BE A LITERAL HERONDALE HELP THIS IS SO FUNNY OH MY GOD YOU LITERALLY ARE THEM WHAT IS THISSSSSSS ARE YOU Y/N
i am so sorry darling will is literally the dilf of the fandom your life must be a mess in this fandom oh no 😭

.XXII.
“Lucie!” Her father’s voice came from the other side of the door as it cracked open inviting in a warm light that chased away the darkness from inside Lucie’s bedroom. Lucie, being only five years old should have been asleep hours ago, but was sitting up in bed with her old stuffed rabbit in her lap, and both hands firmly clamped over her ears.
Will, dressed in his white stocking pajamas, his black hair a mess of tangled curls stepped into the room. “Lucie, I heard voices-- what’s the matter?”
Lucie uncovered her ears and slowly opened her eyes as her father walked into the hazy moonlight that came in through the oval window like a dramatic spotlight. “They won’t stop whispering at me, Papa.”
“Who?” Will looked around her room. “Is someone else in here?”
Lucie nodded.
“Where?” Will demanded.
“They’re not here now,” said Lucie. “You frightened them off, but they wouldn’t stop whispering to me.”
A strange recognition filled Will’s expression. He walked over to Lucie’s side of the bed and climbed in beside her. “Is that so?”
She nodded. “They can be so loud. I think they just want someone to talk to, and I don’t mind, but I want to sleep.”
Will smiled. “As you should be. What do these visitors say?”
Lucie played with the silk ear of her rabbit. “They mostly just say my name. Whisper it over and over again, like they can’t say anything more. Are they ghosts?”
Will nodded. “Yes, I think so.”
“How come I can see them?”
“Because you’re a Herondale,” said Will, proudly. “All Herondales can see ghosts.”
Lucie contemplated this for a moment to the best ability of her still developing five year old brain. “So even James and Mam?”
“Only James, not Mam,” explained Will. “Mam was a Grey before she was a Herondale. It’s hard to understand, but you will.” He tilted her chin up with his finger. “Only born Herondales have this particular talent.”
“And devilishly good looks,” parroted Lucie.
Will barked a laugh. “Exactly.” He pressed a kiss to her forehead. “They’re nothing to be frightened of. They can’t hurt you. They’re just looking for a friend. Now, you go to sleep and if these ghosts visit you again, you remind them that your bedtime is seven-thirty and if they’d like to visit you it must be before then.”
Lucie nodded and slid down beneath the thick comforter. Will tucked Lucie in all around until she resembled a log underneath a fancy blanket. With his white slippers shuffling along the floor, Will left the room and closed the door behind him.
For a moment, her room was quiet and she thought her father might have chased the last of the voices away.
When she was almost asleep, she felt a cold breath of air against her cheek.
Lucie.
Lucie.
LUCIE!
The whispering could be heard even as she folded a pillow over her ears and squeezed her eyes shut. They continued until finally she sat up and yelled into the void, “BE QUIET!”
The voices went out in a whoosh like a candle being snuffed. Nothing could be heard except for the grandfather clock’s ticking on the wall in the hall and the crickets chirping in the warm summer’s air outside. With a curt nod, Lucie closed her eyes and fell asleep.
“Good,” said Belial as he stood from the bed. “You received my message.”
Lucie’s eyes flickered to Grace cowering in the corner beside her mother. Tears stained Grace’s face and her chin shook with more to come as she looked apologetically at Lucie.
“What have you done?” Lucie whispered.
“I had no choice,” said Grace. “He was going to kill my Mum and he would never bring Jesse back. I wouldn’t be left alone— not again.”
Blood boiled in Lucie’s cheeks. “You really think he’ll uphold his promise? He’s about as reliable as a trained lion. He’ll get what he wants from you and then tear your face off.”
“What do you know of it?” Snapped Tatiana Blackthorn. “You’ve been handed things your whole life. Blessed. You’ve no idea what it means to lose something you love.” She turned her attention to Belial. “I’ve done everything you’ve asked. I killed seven innocent souls, I’ve released six demons from captivity using Shadowhunter blood, and I’ve brought you the girl. Now, return my son and we’ll be on our way. You can do what you wish with her.”
Belial blinked lazily.
Lucie hadn’t noticed before since her focus was entirely on the prince of hell lounging on Grace’s chiffon bed. The two women broke apart like curtains and resting behind them, on the bench beneath the window like he’d fallen asleep reading a book, was Jesse’s body.
Lucie gasped and took a marginal step closer to him, but stopped.
Death begets death begets death. You cannot take from death without giving to death first and sometimes it takes more than its share.
“Grace!” Lucie reached forward.
Belial snapped his fingers and Tatiana’s body crumpled to the floor with a sickening crack. Her neck lolled to the side like a broken stick. Grace screamed and fell back against the wall behind her just as Jesse gasped from the window seat.
Limbs flailed around as if he were trying to save himself from drowning until he fell to the floor on his hands and knees gasping for breath in lungs that haven’t been used in years. Lucie thought she could hear his heart beating until she realized it was her own. He sat up and clutched his chest, his blue, green eyes darted frantically around the room.
Grace fell to the floor beside him. “Jesse, it’s alright. It’s alright!”
Jesse wouldn’t look at her. His eyes locked on Lucie. “No, what have you done.”
“I haven’t done anything,” said Lucie.
“Then why are you here?” His face turned red in the cheeks. “I told you specifically not to come. Damn it, Lucie, why didn’t you listen.”
Lucie moved back a step. “I did listen. I came here to tell Grace that I no longer wanted to be a part of our agreement. I came here to tell her that I was giving up. I thought I was honoring your wishes. How was I to know that he was waiting here for me?”
“I didn’t tell you because I thought you wouldn’t believe me,” groaned Jesse. “I thought you’d think I was bluffing to keep you from trying.”
Lucie scoffed. “And look how well your dishonesty worked out.”
Grace cried over their dead mother and clutched at her thick collar in a feeble attempt to wake her up.
“Enough,” said Belial, growing bored of the exchange in front of him. “I have upheld my bargain. It’s time for us to go.”
“No!” Jesse tried to stand. Belial cocked his head and Jesse fell back against Grace.
“Another move and I’ll kill you again, this time with no chance of return.” Belial’s eyes flickered over to Lucie. “I’ve realized I’ve been going about this the wrong way. I tried to capture the Carstairs girl thinking that she would get you to join me, but she’s far too much trouble. No, there was another pawn hiding right underneath my nose. The Blackthorn boy. It didn’t occur to me until you came to visit Grace and asked for her assistance in bringing him back. She was a good pet and delivered the message to Tatiana who in turn delivered the message to me.”
Lucie glared at Grace with her arms wrapped around Jesse’s shoulders. But how could she blame her? If the tables were reversed and it was James she was trying to revive, she might have done the same. No, she was positive she would have done the same. She’d allowed Jesse to give his last breath to her brother to save his life. In the end, she had been willing to give something up for the life of someone she loved. She could not fault Grace that.
“I’m not going with you,” she said. “The entire clave will be here shortly and you’ll be banished back to whatever level of hell you came from.”
Belial grinned. Despite herself, Lucie found it quite a charming smile. “Wonderful. A family reunion. It’s been so long since I’ve spoken to my daughter. I’ve wondered how she fared all these years.”
“She fared nicely without the likes of you,” said Lucie, cursing herself for not bringing a short blade or at least a couple of throwing knives. She’d left in such a rush, she didn’t find a need. Her uncle was notorious for hiding weapons about the manor. Her aunt was always cursing him about it when they were children and Christopher or Anna would somehow wander down the hallway with a curve blade in their chubby little hands.
The hallway, Lucie nearly gasped as she remembered the cross blades hanging in the hallway.
The door behind her remained open. Only a few steps back and she could make a break for it and at least have a chance at defending herself.
“I wouldn’t try it if I were you,” said Belial, tucking his hands into his pockets. “Not unless you want me to start breaking bones in their bodies starting with the smallest.” He raised on his hands and folded his fingers. The door slammed behind Lucie and she heard the faint sound of the lock. “We don’t have much time. I have a very short window back into my realm and we’ll need to be going now. That is if you want your friends to live.”
“Lucie.” Jesse fought against Grace’s hold. “Do not go with him. I’m not meant to be here. I’m not meant to be alive.”
“How rude,” said Belial. “Do you have any idea how hard your mother and sister worked to bring you back to life. The least you could do is be more grateful.”
“If I go with you,” said Lucie. “If I agree to do what you ask, you’ll promise to leave them alone?”
“You have my word,” grinned Belial and extended his hand towards Lucie.
Every instinct drove her to pull away, to run, but then some stronger instinct took control, and of their own free will her fingers closed round Belial’s. Heat seared down and through her, swift as wildfire chased by wind, and as it moved she felt something strong and heavy wrap around her waist.
Her connection broke with Belial as she was dragged back to the center of the room. She turned her neck and looked up.
“Thomas?”
His face was contorted in rage as he yelled over his shoulder to the hallway, “Now!”
A figure dressed in Shadowhunter gear stepped into the room. Lucie didn’t recognize him at first as his face was hidden behind a curtain of black hair.  A spear flew from his hand towards Belial.
Before she could even blink, it’d somehow stopped inches from Belial’s chest, and shot back at the shadow hunter with blinding speed impaling the person in the chest and pinned them to the wall like a collected insect.
It wasn’t until then that Lucie caught a glimpse of the face against the wall. Mouth open and eyes glossy as he stared down at the stick protruding from his chest was Alastair.
A/N: Hope you all are well! Good news, next update is coming in just a short seven days, Dec 13. You know the drill: hit that like, share, leave me comment, and follow along for more updates. Stay safe and stay healthy!

More Fanfiction Links
So, apparently I hit a link limit on my previous post about fanfic links, and in order to remedy that, I’ll be creating this separate list in order to link more fanfics. I’ll also be continuing to add to this current list until I hit the 100 link limit again (because clearly I don’t learn), so it’ll change relatively often.
If you haven’t seen it already, the first post is here, and has a little under 100 fanfics, and I apologize if there are any repeats. I will be relinking my own fics and the ongoing ones for any of you are interested, so yeah.
I will also be marking AUs by putting the AU they’re set in parenthesis, and marking one-shots or chaptered fics by placing an asterisk (*) by the chaptered ones. In unspecified sections, the ships/characters involved in the tory will be listed in italic. Side note, all of the following fics besides the ones in the Pine With Me section are completed, so there’s no need to worry about the completion status of the fics. Now, I have read all of these, so if anyone wants to scream about any of these with me, I got you ;)
(Fair warning, the majority of these are TDA/TLH fics... mostly because I’m rereading TDA and drowning in feelings.)

Matthew x Lucie: “The curves of your lips rewrite history”
I wrote and posted this on AO3, as my Fairondale heart ached because of the lack of content, and this is how it turned out. By the way, I'll leave my AO3 profile here, if you want to check out my other OS and stay tuned for new ones! thelastwriter. Enjoy and maybe let me know what you think, I appreciate it a lot!
It was a beautiful spring Sunday and Lucie Herondale was in the London Institute’s backyard, sitting on the grass and enjoying the warm sunlight while writing a new chapter for her latest story. The air smelled like fresh flowers and the birds were singing and flying from one tree to another. Lucie was feeling super relaxed and incredibly inspired, it was the perfect day to add some new action to her novel. The warm breeze caressed her soft uncovered skin on her arms and shoulders, where the brown waves of her loose hair slightly tickled her.
Matthew Fairchild was laying right beside her, his gaze fixed on the clear sky. It was not unusual to see him hanging around the Institute, since the Fairchilds and the Herondales were great friends and Matthew was often there to train with his parabatai, James Herondale, and to spend some time with him and his sister, Lucie. Earlier that morning, he had spotted her getting ready to go outside and had immediately asked if he could join; Lucie had been surprised by him wanting to spend some time alone with her, she had always thought the reason why he enjoyed being with her was because her brother was there, too. She had been happy to see that, maybe, she had been wrong all this time.
Matthew turned around to look at the young girl on his right: she was wearing a lovely light blue dress, and a ribbon of the same colour adorned her hair. She had taken off her white lace gloves – she found it way easier to write without them on – and Matthew was watching her delicate hands move swiftly along the paper. He was glad she was so focused on her papers, because that way she wouldn’t notice the smitten look that was all over his face. His heart had jumped into his chest when she had agreed to let him go with her, he had been dying to get the chance to be alone with her for so long.
“What scene are you writing now?” he asked. Lucie was slightly startled by that sudden question – she had been so focused on her work that she had almost forgotten that he was there with her. She turned to look at him, his blonde locks were sprawled on the grass and his dark green eyes were now looking directly into her blue ones. The buttons of his white shirt were half-done under his golden vest, and his blue necktie was loose. His warm smile made her cheeks flush, and for a moment there she almost forgot about his question.
“Oh, right” she sighed. “So, princess Lucinda just figured out her feelings for prince Martin, but she won’t go tell him already because, despite his latest declaration of love, she is still afraid of getting her heart broken.”
“I think it is quite foolish” he answered. “Why is she afraid, if you said that he returns her feelings?”
“Sometimes, reciprocating the other’s feelings is not enough” she explained, letting out a sigh. “Countless things can come between a potential love story and make it so that it never sees the light.”
“How dramatic” he laughed.
“It is true, Math!” she scolded him, throwing an elbow at him playfully. “Also” she continued “she is afraid of giving in to perilous… temptations. The young man in question is quite the charmer.”
He smirked. “I thought that, by now, you too had learnt that the only way to get rid of temptation is to yield to it.”
“You will never grow weary of quoting your beloved Oscar Wilde, will you?” Lucie giggled. “And by the way, it would be very improper of her! It could ruin her reputation.”
“I am sure I will not, my dear” he grinned. “As for your story, I still think it is foolish of her not to act on her feelings. Most importantly, it is your story – you are the one who gets to decide whether something is improper or not. And, as far as I am concerned, reputation is an overrated concept, and people should spend way less time worrying over it.” He winked at her.
Lucie let out another sigh. “Well, I guess that is not the only reason I am reluctant to let her go to him. If she does, I will need to write a memorable scene – I am talking about a grand gesture and the finest romantic speeches, and then it will be inevitable for them… to kiss.”
Matthew widened his eyes, agreeing. “They most certainly need to do it!”
“Yeah… that kind of is the real problem” said Lucie, shyly.
“Why would it be?” he asked.
“I… okay, I will tell you. The thing is, my kissing scenes are dreadful! I cannot write them properly, I cannot even get them right by reading them in other books. And, of course, I cannot take my personal experience as an example.” She looked down, too embarrassed to look at her childhood friend in the eyes while discussing such matters with him, especially since they were alone out there, unchaperoned and all that.
“Are you telling me the beautiful, sweet Lu has not been kissed yet?” Matthew said, lifting himself up from the ground so that he could sit in front of her. He knew he had started playing with fire by asking that uneasy question, but he also knew he wouldn’t care if he got burnt.
Lucie’s cheeks turned completely red, but she answered, still not looking at him in the eyes, “I-I did not get the chance – no fine young man has courted me, yet.”
“That is a pity” Matthew said, “and such a waste” he added. "But perhaps I could still help you with that kissing scene?” He moved closer to her, so that their knees were almost touching. At this point, he was so nervous he had started sweating and slightly trembling. What if he had pushed too far? What if she thought that he was being inappropriate, and that would ruin their friendship? These thoughts were interrupted by her asking him another question.
“And, tell me, how would you do that?” Lucie asked, raising an eyebrow.
“I could kiss you” he said, blatantly. “That is, of course, if you will allow me.” By daring to suggest that, he had definitely reached the point of no return.
If possible, Lucie blushed even more, and Matthew noticed, and a slight smirk appeared on his face.
“You are an indecent scoundrel” Lucie laughed. “Suggesting we engage ourselves in such a scandalous activity here, out in the open, where any member of my family could catch us any minute.” Her playful tone made him breathe a sigh of relief, she didn’t seem offended or anything – instead she had started teasing him in turn.
“You are not turning down the offer, though” Matthew grinned, then his expression turned serious. He couldn’t let her think this was just a game to him. “But I understand if you will. You must want your first kiss to be perfect.”
“I actually do.” Lucie remained silent for a couple seconds; then she spoke again. “Do you think that you can live up to my expectations?” she teased him again.
“There is only one way we can know” it was his only answer. Lucie gently tossed her papers and pen on the grass beside her, then looked at Matthew, meeting his gaze. She felt her skin burn from the anticipation. Was she really going to finally have her first kiss?
Matthew’s heart started beating so fast he almost thought it was going to burst anytime. He looked into Lucie’s beautiful blue eyes, who were staring at him, both questioning and excited.  Neither of them said another word, as Matthew moved his face closer to hers, until they were just a few inches apart, and then he lightly brushed his lips against hers. “You may want to close your eyes” he whispered. She giggled, and then did so, and he finally locked lips with her, firmly, and placed an arm around her waist, pulling her closer to him. She quietly gasped as she run her fingers through his soft hair.
Matthew began to wonder if he was dreaming – he was kissing her, at last. He couldn’t remember the first time he had thought about how much he wanted to do that, it was too long ago. But this was no dream: Lucie’s lips felt so real and soft and warm against his, her delicate scent and sweet taste were intoxicating him, it was better than anything Matthew had ever tasted in his whole life. He started moving his mouth on hers, getting the shivers every time that she let out a soft moan against his lips. Lucie took him by surprise when she bit his lower lip, but she could definitely tell that he had liked it a lot, because he deepened the kiss and then gently pushed her onto her back and leaned down, never letting go of her.
He moved his lips to her neck and then lower onto the neckline of her dress, but quickly returned to her mouth before he could no longer be able to stop. He prayed the Angel to forgive him for the thoughts that had taken over his mind. He wondered what she was thinking.
Lucie was completely lost in Matthew’s touch, kisses, sighs. She would have never imagined her first kiss to be this… incredible. That probably was the right word to describe what she was feeling, at least partly – she actually was, for the first time, unable to put something into words.
They went on kissing for another handful of minutes, giggling every now and then and enjoying the taste of each other's lips, and the feeling of their intertwined fingers and light caresses. Eventually, he broke the kiss, breathless, and helped her sit up again. He gently stroked her cheek with his hand. He was unsure whether his lack of breath was due to the kiss or to her unmeasurable beauty. Probably both, he thought. “Woah…” he mumbled, smiling.
Lucie adjusted her hair, retying her ribbon while she regained her breath. “So, how did you like it?” she bluntly asked.
Matthew laughed, and just said, “The curves of your lips rewrite history, my Lu” quoting Oscar Wilde again and receiving an eye roll from Lucie as an answer. “Did you like it?” he asked in turn.
“It was wonderful!” she exclaimed. “Now I totally know how to write a kissing scene! Thank you, Math” she said cheerfully. That most likely was not the only reason why she was so happy about what had just happened, but in that moment she was too eager to write every single detail down in her notebook to think about it. She placed a kiss on Matthew’s cheek, then quickly retrieved her pen and papers from the ground and went back into her own world, frantically writing down notes in order not to forget anything.
This time, Matthew was the one to blush.

Hate You - October 9th
Alastair Carstairs x Thomas Lightwood
A/N: This is angsty, like really angsty. It’s also very short cause I felt like I wasn’t getting Thomas character at all with this one, hence, I’m a sad bitch right now and I really want to cry. I hope you like it tho so, enjoy!:)
Word count: 1,765
Thomas had just finished patrolling with Christopher when he arrived at the Institute to declare that there had been no suspicious sightings. Only a couple of demons that they had managed to put down easily and without too much trouble. They were talking about this and that and Thomas couldn't wait to finally take off his uniform and eat whatever the ladies in the kitchen had cooked.
He could already feel the water rushing over him, the icore peeling off his skin and the sponge scratching away every bit of dust. His dreams were immediately shattered when they heard someone screaming in the training room as they walked through the front door.
Christopher gave him a worried look before he started running down the hall. Thomas prayed with every fiber of his being that no one was hurt and that the screams were just cries of effort. He doubted very much that it was just grunts and cries when they heard what was clearly Cordelia's voice screaming her brother's name.
Thomas snapped, speeding up even more and slamming into one of the doors when he stood in the gym.
There were three bodies on the ground and Thomas could make out each one perfectly.
Matthew was sitting astride Alastair's lying body, hands tight around his neck. James was trying to pull up his parabatai, but it didn't seem to be doing anything. Cordelia moved before him, grabbing Matthew by the arm and pulling back.
The blond looked her in the face. His features twisted with anger and his bloodshot eyes told Thomas enough about his friend's condition.
Alastair seemed motionless under Matthew, hands around the other's wrists and eyes as wide open as his mouth in a silent scream. James was shouting that he had done enough, that it was enough, but the other one seemed numb.
Thomas moved quickly. He ran towards the group of his friends and jumped forward with his whole body, ousting Matthew from above Alastair, making him leave the grip on the Carstairs' neck.
In the action, Cordelia had been thrown backwards and now she was lying on the ground next to them, leaning on both elbows as she watched the scene, distraught.
Thomas looked down, he laying down over Matthew's body as he held both of his wrists with his hands as he struggled. Matthew's witty gaze frightened him more than it should have. What on earth had he been drinking?
He cast a quick glance at James, who had already got up and thought Thomas was more than capable of holding Matthew down. The friend approached Alastair, who was coughing bent forward, one hand on his throat and his cheeks ridged with tears.
Lucie was helping Cordelia standing.
"What happened?" whispered Thomas, unable to find the voice to speak.
Matthew snarled at him like a fierce beast, writhing and screaming to let him go. The grip on his wrists only became firmer.
Lucie spoke for the others, realizing that James was too shocked to answer, "We don't know. We were training, we had to start the next patrol as soon as you guys got back-" she froze when Alastair pushed James away.
"Don't touch me," he growled through his teeth. A grimace appeared on his face, probably because of the pain talking caused.
"Alastair..." called Thomas.
"Be quiet."
They heard quick steps and then Will and Gabriel appeared at the door. Both their faces contorted in an expression of pure horror.
Gabriel was the first to move, shooting towards James and Alastair still on the floor. Will took a second longer to react as he clutched the door between his fingers, looking for support. Lucie approached her father, clenching her fists.
"Dad-"
"What happened?" Will asked with the tone he took when he had to speak to the Council.
"It wasn't Matthew's fault," James said, getting up and walking towards him.
Matthew underneath Thomas wouldn't stop writhing, "Let go of me, damn it!"
Thomas was forced to let go of the grip on his wrists and stand up. James immediately took his place as he held Matthew to his chest and told him to calm down.
"Fairchild tried to kill me," Alastair said in a scratchy voice.
Gabriel gasped, helping the boy to stand. He turned to his son, looking for confirmation. Christopher would never lie. He raised his hands, shaking his head, looking as sorry and frightened as every other person in the room by his friend's ambiguous behavior, "We just got back, but Matthew was actually strangling Alastair."
James nodded, with dark eyes, "He was drinking, someone must have put something in his drink. I've never seen him so worked up," he confessed, holding his parabatai.
Will nodded, looking like an exact copy of his son, addressing Gabriel, "Go get Charlotte and Henry and," he cursed under his breath as he rubbed his hand over his face, "The Carstairs and all the others, too. Magnus Bane as well, please. Send Tessa to my office."
Gabriel nodded for confirmation and then took one last look at his nephews and his son as he left the room. Will stepped forward and put one hand on Matthew's shoulder, the other behind his neck, to hold his head still. He cast a quick glance at James over the boy's shoulder, and immediately returned to stare at Matthew.
Thomas looked to his left, where Cordelia was drawing a iratze on her brother's neck.
Alastair did not seem as upset as you would expect from someone who had just been suffocated.
"Matthew, it's Will. William Herondale." he said to him with a serious look, "Do you recognize me?" he asked.
The blond didn't even seem to hear him. "Behind you, holding you, is Jamie, James. My son. Your parabatai." to that, Matthew seemed to stop for a moment. His frantic movements and facial tics resumed shortly after.
Will pulled himself up, taking a deep breath through his nose and turned to his daughter, "Lucie, could I borrow your stele please?"
James stepped back, carrying his friend's back too, "What do you want to do?" he asked with a hint of concern in his voice.
"I just want to put him to sleep," Will replied, looking conflicted.
James shook his head, "I can do that."
His father looked him in the eye, really looked him in the eye, seeing all kinds of emotions. Emotions that he himself had experienced many times in his short life alongside their Uncle Jem. "I won't ask you to do it, Jamie."
There were no other words, just the head of the Institute silencing those inhuman sounds produced by their friend and his parabatai supporting him as he fell to the ground, helpless.
Afterwards, everything was very slow. The parents arrived immediately, Sona and Charlotte equally worried, and the children and friends who had been present during the attack were questioned by Will and Tessa.
Thomas and Christopher went to take a shower and were not let through the Institute wing where they were making things clear when they finished. Anna had arrived half an hour later and apparently had been assigned to distract them because she wouldn't stop asking them what they wanted to do to kill the time.
Thomas had kindly asked her if he could stay alone and she had granted his wishes, leaving him alone and taking Christopher with her.
Now he was standing on the steps of the entrance to the Institute and was torturing his hands, trying to understand what had just happened.
He heard the door open and close gently and then someone ran down the stairs.
He didn't have time to turn around to see who it was, Alastair was already down the stairs and was marching towards the exit, his hands hidden in his pockets and his head clutched between his shoulders.
He did not think twice before getting up and running after him.
There was no need to call him because he turned around as soon as he heard the sound of Thomas' boots on the gravel.
Alastair wrinkled his forehead, "What do you want?"
Thomas did not notice the irritated tone of voice, but he had to refrain from jerking when he saw the other one's wet cheeks, "How are you?"
"What do you think? Your friend tried to kill me," he said.
"What happened?" he asked sincerely curious to know his side of the story.
Alastair's eyes darkened and his expression grew grim, "What do you want, Lightwood?"
"I just want to know if you need anything." Thomas murmured, closing in.
He laughed sarcastically, "Why don't you stop pretending to care about me?" he asked as he walked away, "Why don't you go back to your perfect little house with your sisters and your cousins and your divine companionship and leave me alone?"
Thomas really didn't understand where all that anger towards him came from, but he thought he would be angry too if someone had just tried to choke him to death.
"I don't want to leave you alone right now. I think you need to be distracted and-"
"You really don't get it when someone wants to be alone, do you?" Alastair raved, raising his hands to the sky. Thomas did not answer.
The boy was looking at him with vaguely shiny eyes. He looked away, groaning, "Go back to the others. I know you hate me as much as any other person in this Institute," Alastair muttered.
Thomas' expression didn't change one bit and in the most serious tone he had ever used he said, "Hate you? I could never hate you... I love you."
Alastair did not even take the time to process what he had just been told, "You don't know what you are talking about."
"I love you, Alastair." repeated Thomas, closing in enough so that his face was just a few inches from his own.
Alastair looked him straight in the eye and Thomas saw not an ounce of emotion in those dark pools, "It doesn't work this way," he whispered, clenching his fists.
He turned around and started walking towards the exit, never looking back. Thomas didn't have the strength to follow him, to stop him. The rejection a pain strong enough to block his breath in his throat.
He didn't move from where he stood until James shouted his name from the Institute. Only then did he turn to his friend, and as if nothing had happened he walked to the infirmary, pretending that the conversation he had just had with Alastair had not utterly shattered him.

The Last Hours of a Herondale
Ch.1 Better Angels
Tumblr media
Pair: Matthew Fairchild x reader
Words: 2k
Summary: James' twin sister, just like him and Lucie has an unexplained ability, she sees visions of the past and the future occasionally when she touches an object or a person. What happens though, when she sees herself dying?
Warning: maybe blood?
I was surveying the demon battle; I didn’t ponder much as my twin brother and his Parabatai danced with the demon. I was sitting ready to intervene in case it was necessary, I had a bad feelings and unfortunately my gut was usually not mistaken.
James disappeared once again, it used to happen a lot more than that, and it would keep happening to him. The moment he was out of sight I jumped down from the rooftop I was observing. Before I landed I heard Matt’s scream, I immediately took out my whip slapping it in the air as the electricity. I didn’t know if my brother was back and I couldn’t care less about the usual catchphrase Matt would mock me with before running into a battle “Sit back and watch how it’s done”. He is my brother’s Parabatai, namely, the same as James. I was holding Matthew’s stele at the ceremony.
“Dodge” I exclaimed as I had the demon still for some moments, I took out a dagger and threw it at the demon. Matt followed my instruction without further notice.
My plan though didn’t work out for long as the demon escaped the tie of my whip letting me fall backwards.
“Y/N/N!” Matt exclaimed and turned at me, he was actually worried.
“I won’t break Matt, where did the demon go?” I asked and stood up and stepped forward as I activated the voyance rune upon my wrist.
“Lurked back into the shadows” he spoke up confidently. Matt paced further in the dark alley and the demon hissed loudly and gripped his shoulders tightly. He screamed as the demon managed to dug its nails to his shoulders, its mouth opened up in four and he hissed to his face as I leaped on its back and stabbed it with a seraph blade but before its blade could dug through its skull its head turned 180 degrees, its stinky breath straight to my face.
Moments flashed and I saw my brother be back. Deumas roared again and pressured the blade to its chest yelling the angels name, but once he threw Matt off of him and then its attention turned to me, James was already there, he swung his arm back pulling my seraph sword out as I fell on my back in the shadows.  James looked like he was losing it.
“James!” I yelled, unaware if he heard me, the demon slapped him as he seemed to disorientate. I groaned in pressure as I prevented another hit to my brother with my daggers. Suddenly the demon was swept off his feet, three chords wrapped around its legs pulling it backwards. It was Thomas standing behind us with his bolas. Thomas was tall and had a massive physique.
“I am alright” my brother assured me and I dodged to the side retrieving my weapon and returning it on my belt. I let my whip loose again and trapped its upper body as Thomas was still holding it in place. With the corner of my eye I noticed Christopher helping Matt, before I returned to the demon that soon burst out in an explosion of ichor and demon blood that showered me and everyone else but my brother.
“Matthew, Y/N-.” My brother begun and as I was wiping the slime from my cloths.
“How- Wha-?” Christopher shuttered and I raised an eyebrow.
“Do you mean how we tracked down the last demon in London?” James asked as he carefully offered me a napkin. “Or that it is also the most disgusting thing?” I was surprised on how calm and normal his voice sounded. I knew he was innerly shaking.
“Or that James managed to make us a mess and yet stay out of it.” I commented to lighten the atmosphere as I wiped the last bit of ichor from under my chin there was a small burn mark from it there. He was the only one untouched.
I saw Thomas roll his eyes in annoyance as he was covered in ichor as Matthew sputtered the seraph blade that defused. “This is an outrage” he commented tossing the weapon aside. “Do you know how much I spent on this waistcoat?” he asked with annoyance and complaint.
“Plus no one told you to go demon hunting dressed like an extra from the Importance of being Earnest” James pointed out, he handed another napkin to his parabatai as well. He was standing between us.
Thomas spoke commenting on Matt as well. Therefore I didn’t hear him. “James, your hand…” I noticed a gash across his palm, I took out my stele and touched his at hand. He removed himself from his grip looking at me for any sign of seizure but I pointed at my gloves and smiled as I drew an iratze. It was usually Matt’s work, but it was only a gash.
Us twins had our very own gift as our parents call it trying to convince us it is not a curse,  though nor me neither my brother feel it like a gift, it is an uncontrolled ability we have, that activates randomly. James changes dimensions, he comes back though, his episodes do not last this long and there is nothing we can usually do as he physically disappears. I on the other hand, see visions, usually unclear and enigmatic concerning the object or the person I came in contact with. While I see those dreams, I am falling into a sort of seizure. This happens since I am ten, my uncle Jem though, gifted me a pair of enchanted gloves to wear and I have to admit that it has been helpful.
“Thomas! Stop scrubbing at me” Christopher said, windmilling his arms. “We should go back to the Devil and get cleaned there.”
“I agree, its starting to get chilly.” I spoke and secured my stele inside my pocket. Matt looked at me and removed his fancy waist coat and placed it around my shoulders gently.
“Care to tell me how much you spent on it?” I asked in a mocking way as everyone started walking to the Devil’s Tavern.
“Its useless now either way” Matt replied as I wrapped it better around me while we were walking there. I rarely went to the Devil, it was a hide out, a safe spot for my brother and his friends. I knew it wasn’t true but I felt as I intruded… Maybe because this is how I felt when someone invaded my atelier or music room.
“I almost didn’t recognize the lot of you when you tramped in here covered in whatever you call it…” The waitress commented and I looked at her, Polly I think it was her name. There were welcome exclamations galore, the boys were really loved around here, fairly though.
“Its been ages since we have seen a demon in London” said James
“I reckon they are all too scared to show their faces…” Polly spoke.
“Scared?” James asked confused. The rest of the boys were spread across the Tavern, Christopher and Thomas went to eat and drink some water, while I saw Matt bottoming up a whole glass of a brownish liquid which was one hundred per cent alcohol.
“Scared of what?” I wondered and her gaze fell upon me. She wrinkled her nose, a werewolf she is, she probably smelled ichor, blood and sandalwood upon me.
“And what a beauty like you is doing in such dirty shit hole.” She spoke, obviously avoiding my question.
“You have seen me before…” I commented puzzled at the reaction of the wolf. She extended her hand and gripped my chin lightly and turned my head to the side. I felt my breath be caught upon my chest, intention was good as she dragged her finger behind my ear taking a drop of ichor.
Within seconds James gripped Polly’s wrist and threw it away from me. I turned to my twin, I knew he was there but I was not there, I could see a girl, Polly, go down an alley, she was so carefree and happy until the person next to her suddenly started to change. She would scream and shout for help but the eldest werewolf didn’t seem to be phased, he simply bit her. I squeezed my eyes, I couldn’t watch and therefore there she was, young Polly, her expression twisted in pain and agony from the lycanthropy infection. I opened my eyes again and I could see, or more like sense my brother, he was calm, it was a usual thing for me. I would be alright in about five minutes. I let out a soft cry I was surveying Polly turn into a werewolf for the first time. It felt like forever until I shot up.
I looked around, I found myself into the attic of the Merry Thieves, it was a small space with one bedroom. I was laying on the bed while I still had Matthew’s coat as a blanket over me. I took my time to make myself obvious and I caught an interesting conversation about ‘Grace’
“Her name is Grace” said James, a hint of annoyance upon his voice. I could smell the gin on him as he was sitting on the bed next to me.
“Exactly, Grace” Agreed Thomas “Aunt Tatiana’s always kept them both in splendid isolation in Idris- no visitors at all- but apparently she’s decided to move back to London, so my parents are all in a dither about it” he explained and this unlocked so many memories of our childhood times in Idris where James would secretly go to meet Grace. I did not like her that much as I got along better with Barbara Lightwood, Thomas’ eldest sister.
“Grace? To London?” James asked in complete disorientation.
“Seems Tatiana wants to bring her out in society” Thomas looked puzzled at my brother’s reaction. “I suppose you’ve met her in Idris? Your house is next to the Blackthorn manor, isn’t it?” It was true, We used to meet her every Summer.
There were moments of silence as there was no one responding so it was the time to make the fact that I returned to reality known. “And where will she stay?” I asked the thing my twin wouldn’t dare and I felt his relief wash over his figure as he turned at me.
“Hello there” James smiled at me and patted my knee as I was curled in a ball under Matt’s coat.
“Are you feeling alright? You seemed to doze off at Polly’s charms” Math’s voice sounded smooth and sweet as he joked with me.
“I will live, apparently” I smiled lightly as I felt uncomfortable to speak about Polly. “Too bad for your coat, you won’t have it back today.” I added and curled in a ball under it. It had his smell.
“No worries, it was disposable after James’ smart move” Matthew replied with a charming smile and he patted my head gently.
“Awee how sweet of you” spoke up with a sigh. I felt lightheaded as I sat up, making an effort to balance my head. James held my shoulders not attempting to touch me again, afraid that there would be another episode.
“Your hand…” I noticed as it seemed that my iratze didn’t work as needed.
“Why didn’t you tell me sooner?” Matthew asked and his slim but muscular hand slipped out his stele. I could see his veins as he was preparing his stele.
Thomas approached me with a toast and I chuckled lightly as he offered it to me. “You something bad for Polly, didn’t you?” he asked me. Math and Jame were further but I could notice that they were listening to me.
“I did, but I am actually used to seeing bad things” I explained and certainly did not deny the fact that I was hungry too much. “This is pretty good” I smiled at my cousin as he poured some water in a glass.
“I don’t mean to be the first one to leave a party” announced I, so as to get their attention “however I shall be making my way to the institute.” I spoke up and James seemed to dislike the idea.
“Perhaps you should stay for a bit and then we can return together.” My brother remarked and looked at me. I was trying to understand was it he was fearing fathers wrath or he was extremely worried about me.
“No, I’d rather not” I smiled at him “Do not concern yourself James. I will be completely fine. I promise.” I sat up taking my time to stand up from the old wooden bed of the attic. Thomas was right next to me, I am certain he was pondering where to support me if needed without jeopardizing to have another episode.
“How exactly do you expect me to do that, when you just had an episode” he remarked as he approached me once Math was done drawing an iratze rune upon his skin
“And you had an episode of your own as well and with us not knowing what was the cause of it. At least with me you saw it coming.” I spoke with my voice raising by the note. I was so disturbed by the fact that he considered the incident with me so much more important  than his even though it was considered during battle.
“Y/N!” he exclaimed.
“James!” I yelled back almost immediately, it was a reflect that took over and I could not control. I knew that I was supposed to be the delicate girl amongst the boys that were mostly friends of my brother. Nevertheless I could not stand the unfairness of the matter. I was the girl he was the boy we were in the same danger and our troubled moments were just as random and I could not fathom the fact he was being the same phallocratic male like the ones were asking for my hand were.
I started walking to the exit of the attic and Matthew got my elbow. I tried to conserve my gaze therefore I just couldn’t help and stare at him, deadly. “I am going home on my own! I am pretty capable of doing so and I do not need anyone to protect me or my honor. In case it wasn’t noticed I saved Math twice just some hours earlier when you had one hell of a random disappearance to God knows where. Perhaps papa would be interested in a more detailed version of tonight’s success.” I stated, my angry gaze met James’ who’s blood I could feel boiling.
“You wouldn’t dare.” He growled, his teeth greeted and his jaw clenched, his outfit was still well-stood unlike mine. I looked like I was in a battle indeed, my hair tucked in a messy bun with all the braids rogue and my clothes filled with stains and scratches.
“Well, I thought you wouldn’t dare to imply that I wouldn’t make it home alone… And yet here we stand.” I spoke up and threw the coat at Matthew who caught it.
“No keep it, I will come until some point, I need some quality bourbon not this, whatever it is.” Matthew spoke and walked out.
“Whatever” I shrugged my shoulders and walked out of the attic. I knew this would calm down James, just as I knew Matthew would trust me, even though he looks like he doesn’t care at all about me or anyone for that matter…

Relationships:
Thomas x Alastair
Matthew x James
Background Lucie x Jesse
Obviously Cassandra Clare owns characters and everything.
Chapter Five
Thomas thought he might die if he had to sing the same songs one more time today. Cordelia and Lucie had gone to practice in a studio a floor above them and Alastair had gone to rehearse for about an hour before he was whisked away for his first pop up concert at a bar about ten minutes away.
The boys were currently taking a break. Christopher was drinking from his half empty water bottle and Matthew was sitting on a wooden stool talking animatedly about the tour to James who was listening with a wide smile.
Thomas looked down at his guitar and opened his song book. He flipped to the page where he had written the song about Alastair. He hadn’t given it a name yet but he started messing with some chords until he had a short song. He started strumming softly and singing under his breath.

And baby when you sleep, do you dream of me?
And when you're awake, do you think of me?
I need to know, how do you feel?

Cause baby when I sleep, I dream of you
And when I'm awake, that's all I do
Think about every detail you have

Do you notice when I get mad, I clench my jaw?
Do you notice when I get sad, I tend to fall?
Look at my words I say to you

Cause I notice when you get mad
You close your eyes
And I notice when you are sad
You let out sighs

I need to know are those sighs ever over me?

Do you know how in love with you
I am
Do you see how in love with you
I am

Everything that you do, it makes my heart stop
Oh, it stops
And baby when you sleep, do you dream of me?

Thomas stops strumming and leans over to write some notes in his notebook. He always teaked chords about twenty times before he was happy with it. He had managed to capture his feelings about Alastair through the lyrics. How he noticed all the small things that Alastair did and how he hoped Alastair did the same things.
How Alastair had the innate ability to make his heart stop when he came near him, or how ninety percent of his dreams revolved around him. Thomas didn’t realize he was smiling brightly until James spoke up. “Thomas, did you write that about Alastair?”
Thomas looked up and blushed. “Um, yeah. It’s not very good and it’s kinda short so we don’t have to play it or anything obviously I was just messing around.” Matthew rolled his eyes before saying, more exasperated than anything Thomas had heard him say before, “Tommy, we love all of your songs you know this. Stop being self conscious about them, they're amazing.” Tomas blushed again and laughed nervously.
“Thomas,” Christopher said and everyone looked over at him. He was looking at Thomas with a calculating expression. “What if you sang that at one of our concerts? It doesn’t have to be the first one or anything, but one it would change things up, and two, our fans have never heard you sing. They would lose their minds.” James and Matthew’s faces light up. “Oh my god yes! That’s perfect Thomas you have to!” James said excitedly.
“I could play the piano for it! Thomas it would be perfect!” Thomas was a blushing stuttering mess at this point. “Are you guys kidding? No! I would freeze in front of everyone! Not to mention Alastair would be there and I wrote it for him and I do not by any means want him to hear it!” The other boys groan and Christopher gives him a pointed look.
“Just think about it.” Thomas sighed. “Kit-” Christopher shook his head. “No, I’m serious. Promise us you’ll think about it.” Thomas looked at all of them. Each of them wearing a desperate expression. Thomas threw his head back and groaned loudly. “Fine. I’ll think about it, but no promises guys.” They all smile at him.
“Yes!” Kit said excitedly. Matthew and James high five and Thomas rolls his eyes. Matthew turns to him expectantly. “Do you have any other new songs Thomas?” Thomas nods his head and picks up his notebook again, this time tossing it to Matthew. He was protective of his songwriting journal but he didn’t mind it those three looked at it.
“What if we learned some songs and performed a new one every concert?” James asked and Matthew tapped the side of his noise. Thomas laughed, those two and their same thought process could be damned.
Thomas shrugged. “I don’t care, we can do that if you want.” The boys all nod and Matthew smiles. “I’m gonna go make some copies of this so James and Christopher can read it.” Matthew says standing up. Thomas nods. “Knock yourself out.” He said plucking the song again.
Matthew came back five minutes later. “Ya know Thomas, I have a really good feeling about these songs. The lyrics are all so good.” Thomas laughed. “Thanks, let’s get started.” And with that, they go back to rehearsing.

They met up with the girls for lunch after about around two more hours of practicing. Lucie was beaming speaking quickly, the way she always did when she was excited. Matthew and Cordelia were listening with rapt attention. James, Christopher, and Thomas were talking about songs. Christopher and James were pestering Thomas about singing again.
“What are you talking about?” Lucie said, abruptly turning her, Matthew, and Cordelia’s attention to the other three. “Thomas has a few songs that are really good that we want him to sing on tour with us but he’s ‘considering’ it.” Christopher said, using air quotations to emphasize that Thomas was not, in fact, considering it.
“Oh I think you should.” A deep voice said from behind him. Thomas turned to look at Alastair as he slumped into the chair next to him. He had a huge smile on and was practically radiating energy. Thomas bumped his shoulder with his own, “How was the show?”
Alastair’s smile was blinding. “It was so amazing. I’d almost forgotten how it felt. Everyone was screaming, singing, jumping. Surprisingly a lot of people knew about me and the word spread fast.” Alastair laughed and Thomas smiled at him. He loved when Alastair was excited. He so rarely saw it.
“But really Thomas, you should sing at the concerts. The fans would go nuts.” Thomas groaned at the return of the conversation he didn’t want to have. “Maybe they would but they all love Matthew and I don’t want them to be disappointed that he isn’t singing.” Matthew rolled his eyes and reached over the table to flick Thomas’ forehead from the spot across from him. Thomas huffed and rubbed his forehead.
“They aren’t going to be disappointed Tom. Your new songs are really good, and you have an amazing voice. If anything they’ll ask you to sing more.” Matthew said glaring at Thomas, daring him with a look to contradict him again. Alastair turned to Thomas, “New songs?” He asked quietly. Thomas just nodded glaring down at his salad.
“What are they about.” Alastair asked innocently, blissfully unaware of how strongly that affected Thomas. Thomas’ face caught fire and he made a sheepish sound. “Umm, I mean, a bunch of different things I guess. One’s about my sister, a few about a guy. I don’t know different things I guess.”
Thomas looks up to wide eyes and is momentarily confused until he realizes what he just said. He was about to stutter out an excuse when Alastair tilts his head and looks at him contemplatively. “You’re gay?” Thomas groans and puts his head in his hands, sliding down in his seat as far as he could. It didn’t help hide his face though, not with his too tall frame.
“That slipped out, kindly ignore that.” Alastair laughed and shook his head. “No way am I ignoring that but I won’t bring it up.” He said emphasizing it with a wink that made Thomas want the floor to swallow him whole. Thomas felt like his whole body was hot. “You’re not telling anyone.” Matthew said with a hint of threatening finality in his voice. Alastair looked at Matthew annoyed, “Obviously Fairchild. I’m not going to out him.” Matthew just rolled his eyes and slumped against James who was currently looking at something on his phone.
Alastair turned back to Thomas about to say something when James made an alarmed sound before proceeding to choke on his sandwich. Matthew turned around looking at him concerned before hitting his back roughly. James stopped choking and grabbed the water Lucie was offering him. “Jesus Jamie are you okay?” Matthew asked concern in his voice. James ignored him and glared at Thomas.
“Thomas Lightwood how dare you not tell us!” Everyone looked at Thomas confused and he stared at James in equal confusion. “Excuse me?” Thomas asked uncomfortably. What had he not told them? James’ eyes narrowed further. “You’re sister! Barbara? Anything you wish to share?” Thomas barked a laugh rolling his eyes. “James, she wanted to tell people.” James stuck his tongue out. “That doesn’t mean you can just not tell us! We’re family!”
Lucie cut in, “I’m sorry we seem to be missing a large portion of this conversation.” She said gesturing to the rest of them. Thomas smiled at her. “Oliver proposed to Barbara.” Matthew, Christopher, Lucie, and Cordelia all burst into excited chatter and Thomas laughs pulling out his phone.
He called Barbara who answered on the second ring. “Hey Tommy!” She said in his ear. He laughed, “They just found out Ollie proposed.” He said referring to her fiance by his nickname Barbara had given him when she was pining over him before they started dating. He heard her laugh and then moved his phone to the middle of the table so she could hear.
He took it back after about twenty seconds. Alastair leaned over to him and Thomas felt his breath catch. Alastair was so close his lips were only centimeters away from Thomas’ cheek. Alastair stared Thomas in the eyes as he did so before whispering quietly, “Hello Barbara.” And moving back. Thomas let out a quick and shaky huff. “Who was that?” Barbara questioned over the phone. “Alastair.” Thomas said in a weak voice. Barbara squealed slightly, “Oh! Tell him I said hi and put my on speaker phone. I want to talk to Lucie.” Thomas did so.
Lucie took the phone excitedly all but screaming into it when she got it. Thomas laughed and turned to Alastair who had an unreadable expression on. “Barabara said hello to you too.” Thomas said, leaning away from Christopher who was talking excitedly with his whole body. Thomas had learned it was safest to get out of arm's reach when Christopher got like this.
It just so happened that he was leaning halfway on top of Alastair who was smirking at him. Thomas huffed and went to move back right as Christopher brought his hand, now in a fist, back. Christopher punched him in the face and Thomas let out a startled yelp falling back on Alastair.
Christopher looked at him guiltily. “Sorry Tommy.” He said frowning at Thomas’ cheek, which was now red. Thomas shook his head moving his jaw. “Christopher you are the only person I know who could accidentally punch someone in the face.” Lucie said looking at Thomas concerned.
Thomas felt something squirm beneath him and moved to get off, now acutely aware that he had fallen in Alastair’s lap. Alastair’s arms wrapped around Thomas’ waist, pulling his back down. He kept one arm around Thomas in an iron grip, the other going up to Thomas’ jaw to look at it. Thomas kept squirming, growing increasingly more uncomfortable.
Alastair let out an aggravated groan. “Lightwood stop moving. I’m just trying to see your jaw so would you please stop squirming.” Thomas sighed and stopped moving, his entire body was tensed. Alastiar relaxed his grip and let his hand rest on Thomas’ hip. Thomas felt as if he hadn’t had anything to drink in a week, his throat was so dry.
After what felt like ages, Alastair dropped his hand from where it had been cupping Thomas’ jaw. “It’ll bruise but you’ll be okay.” Thomas rolled his eyes and got up, only slightly disappointed that Alastair hadn’t stopped him again.
“I’m going to get a coffee. Anyone want anything?” Thomas asks looking around the table, there was a chorus of no’s. Thomas nods and turns around, instead of going to the counter though he goes outside. It had been much too claustrophobic in there and the cool air from outside had made Thomas feel as if he could finally breathe.
He had dealt with anxiety for as long as he could remember. That tended to happen when you grew up listening to bullies and always waiting to be messed with. Thomas shuddered at the thought and turned his head slightly as two who were staring in the window of the shop started squealing. “It is them! I told you Jesslyn! It’s all three bands! Oh my god it’s Alastair!” A girl with hair so blonde it looked white said.
Thomas rolled his eyes, Alastair’s fans tended to find him wherever he went. The other girl, who had bubblegum pink hair laughed. “You and your love for Alastair! I’m much more excited to see Matthew. I swear we’re soulmates.” Thomas smirked at that. It was common knowledge for anyone that had ever met him that Matthew was one hundred percent head over heels for James. If they didn’t end up together (which Thomas knew for a fact they would) Matthew would end up alone.
“Where’s Thomas?” The blonde one said, Thomas was about to say something when the pink haired girl laughed. “Maybe they finally got rid of him. God knows no one likes him, maybe they finally came to their senses.” Thomas felt a chill settle in his bones. He was well aware of the fact that he was probably the least loved by their fans (there were hundreds of posts and comments that proved that correct) but to hear it said aloud hurt him more than he would admit.
The blonde girl shovered her friend playfully but laughed. They walked into the cafe, probably hoping to talk to his friends inside but Thomas just huffed and walked away. He wasn’t in the mood for company right now. He pulled his phone out to let Matthew know he wasn’t coming back right now and was only vaguely surprised that he already had a  few texts from him.

Matthew Unfairchild:
You okay?

Matthew Unfairchild:
You don’t look so good.

Matthew Unfairchild:
Where are you going?

Matthew Unfairchild:
Tommy?

Thomas sighs and sends Matthew a text before turning his phone off completely walking quickly, trying to shake off my thoughts.

Tommy:
I’m fine, I just need a minute. I’ll be back in 20 minutes.

Thomas keeps walking, playing the girl’s words in his head over and over. Maybe they finally got rid of them, god knows no one likes him, maybe they finally came to their senses. Thomas can feel himself shaking. Is that what everyone thought of him? Do his band mates think of him like that? He knew logically that they didn’t and they wouldn’t be a band without him but he couldn’t help the thoughts slipping through.
Thomas was brought back to his senses when he felt a hand grab his arm. Thomas let out a pathetic whimper that only made his anxiety shoot up even more. “Let go!” He gasped pulling his hand away and stumbling when the person let him go abruptly. “Lightwood it’s just me! Calm down!” Thomas looked at him and was aware that he knew the person standing in front of him but his brain was still short circuiting and he couldn’t quite place them.
“Thomas are you alright?” Thomas stumbles back again shaking his head. He turns abruptly and walks down a small alley that sits between two buildings. He turns at the end and slides down the back wall of the building. He was aware the person was still with him but he was too focused on trying to calm himself down to care.
The person sits next to him and puts their hand on Thomas’ knee. “You’re okay Thomas. Is this a panic attack?” Thomas felt himself nodding before he processed the words. The person rubbed his knee comfortingly. “Okay, that’s okay. It’s just me, Alastair. We’re behind a fishing shop. Dreadfully awful place if I do say so myself. Smells too much like fish.” Thomas felt himself give a breathless laugh despite himself.
Of course it was Alastair who found him. He had no idea why the world hated him so much but he couldn’t bring himself to be too mad because at least someone was here. Thomas was still shaking uncontrollably, he was starting to get light headed and cursed himself for not realizing sooner that he wasn’t breathing right. Alastair’s hand stopped rubbing gently and instead grasped Thomas’ knee tightly.
“Thomas, you need to breathe. What do you want me to do.” Thomas shook his head and gasped loudly. Come on Thomas breathe, he told himself. He hated this part, being aware of what was happening but being far too gone to really control it. “A-Alastair.” Thomas stuttered attempting to undo the top buttons of his shirt with shaky hands. Stupid button ups.
Alastair was kneeling in front of him within seconds, gently tugging Thomas’ hands down. “Thomas breathe. Please breathe.” He said urgently undoing the top buttons of Thomas’ shirt with minimal difficulty. Thomas gasped as if unbuttoning the shirt had really helped him breathe. Thomas was too aware of the fact that his heart was beating too hard and the ground was disgusting.
He groaned and reached out to Alastair who took his hands easily, his thumbs drawing soothing circles over Thomas’ hands. Thomas let his head fall on Alastiar’s chest, feeling the rise and fall of his chest as his head went with it. He focused on the rising and falling trying to match his breaths, which were still coming much too fast, with Alastairs.
His breathing was almost matched with Alastair’s when he realized that one of Alastiar’s hands had come up to his head and his thumb was now rubbing circles behind Thomas’ ear. Thomas found that that was all it took to calm him down the rest of the way.
He was still shaking, something he had gotten used to after having so many panic attacks. He let his head rest on Alastair’s chest a moment longer, trying to gather his thoughts and debating if he wanted to apologize or just pretend it hadn’t happened at all.
He pulled his head back, deciding to just apologize, and let the building hold him up. “I’m so sorry, I didn’t mean for you to see that.” Thomas said softly looking at the ground, playing with a pebble. Alastair shook his head quickly. “Thomas don’t apologize for that. Please don’t apologize for that. Are you okay?”
Thomlas let out a shaky breath. ”I’m fine. Thank you.” Alastair smiles softly at him. “Anytime. Does that happen often?” Thomas bit his lip and looked away. He didn’t really want to tell Alastair that it did indeed happen quite often, but he couldn’t lie. Not to Alastair.
“Yeah but it's fine.” Alastair shook his head sadly. “That’s not fine Thomas. If you don’t mind me asking, what set it off.” It occurred to Thomas then, that Alastair had been referring to him as Thomas and not as Lightwood. “Um, just some people outside. Have you been calling me Thomas?” Alastair let out a nervous laugh and Thomas could have sworn that he was blushing.
“Yes? You weren’t reacting well to Lightwood and Thomas was calming you down a little.” Thomas nodded. That made sense, he hadn’t been very aware when Alastair had called him Lightwood so it had confused him. “Yeah, I’m sorry I wasn’t thinking straight.” Alastair rolled his eyes an amused smile gracing his lips, something Thomas was desperately trying not to stare at.
“After what you said earlier I can see how thinking straight would be a problem.” Thomas stared at him for a minute and Alastair’s face fell a little before Thomas surprised him by bursting into laughter. “Did- did you just make a joke about me beng gay?” Thomas said through his laughter. Alastair looked proud, “Yes I did.” Thomas just laughed harder, Alastair joined in.
After a few minutes Alastair stood up and reached his hand out to Thomas who took it gratefully. Alastair helped him up and Thomas swayed slightly on his still shaky legs. Alastair reached out to steady him but Thomas batted his hands away. “I’m fine.” He said proudly.
Alastair rolled his eyes, “Of course, don’t know why I tried.” He said moving closer so he could catch Thomas if the need arose. Thomas rolled his eyes and took a couple shaky steps forward. “What time is it?” He asked Alastair who pulled out his phone with a raised eyebrow. “It’s 5:15.” Thomas cursed, he had told Matthew twenty minutes but it had already been almost forty. He walked faster, Alastair jogging to keep up.
“Lightwood would you please slow down? You may have freakishly long legs, but those of us  with normal legs cannot walk as fast as you, you plasted giant.” Thomas laughed and slowed down so Alastair wasn’t running anymore. “If you call your legs normal I would hate to see what short looks like. Alastair grinned and shook his head.
He stared at Thomas for a while, his face switching back and forth between slight expressions and expressionless. Thomas took that time to stare at Alastair in response.
He looked at Alastair’s eyes, those pretty dark eyes that Thomas swore he could get lost in at any point. His hair, which Thomas almost found himself angry with. Why would he want to hide something so beautiful. Why would he want to dye it something so common, when his dark hair was anything but? Thomas felt his eyes go to Alastiar’s lips unconsciously. Thomas spent so many years wondering what it would be like to kiss Alastair. He wondered how soft Alastair’s full lips would be. He wondered what it would feel like to feel Alastair smile against his mouth.
He hadn’t realized they were leaning in until he heard someone laughing and turned to see Lucie turning the corner. Matthew was ahead of the group and was standing there with his mouth open staring at the two of them.
Thomas felt his face heat up and he pulled away hastily. Was he really about to kiss Alastair? Had Alastair really been about to kiss him? He turned away and cleared his throat, glancing at Alastair out of the corner of his eye. Alastair had his arms crossed and a scowl on his face. Thomas shook his head and walked towards Matthew.
He couldn’t comprehend anything that was going on, his head too caught up in the fact that he was about ninety percent sure that he had almost kissed Alastair. What just happened?

RevolutionaryWriters Event 1
I finally did this y’all lol
Prompt: “What if something happens to you?” / “People can live for a hundred years without living a minute”
Ship: Blackdale (Lucie x Jesse)
For the lovely @princesslucretia!! 💕 (I hope it’s okay that I used this prompt for the event! I just thought it fit really well!)
As the grasping fingers of nighttime overtook the day, Jesse Blackthorn awoke with excitement in his heart. The moment after he opened his eyes, he willed himself into darkness again, the great black nothingness suffusing him for just a second before he appeared in Lucie Herondale’s bedroom.
The excitement disappeared when he saw she was crying.
“Lucie!” He hurried over to her, wishing desperately that he could lay a hand on her shoulder. She sat on her bed, her pale pink dress spread before her, her body wracked with sobs. She would have, should have, been a vision of beauty, a goddess come to life, if her face hadn’t been crumpled in sadness. My light should never be so dim.
She looked up at his approach, then quickly covered her face with her hands. “Jesse, not now.”
“What’s wrong?” he asked, but Lucie didn’t answer. He watched her cry for a long moment, shifting nervously. “Lucie, you’re scaring me. What’s going on?”
She sniffled behind her hands. “Nothing. It’s nothing. Just leave me alone, please.”
He reached out a hand, but of course it just passed right through her. Tentatively, he positioned himself on the bed next to her. If I were alive, this would be very improper, he thought. Lucie had never seemed to mind, though.
“You wanted me to come hear your story, right? So read it to me. Maybe that would make you feel better.” He tried to use as gentle a voice as possible, but Lucie broke into fresh sobs anyway. Her small body shuddered, her hair bouncing in its curls. Jesse could feel his heart cracking into pieces.
Wordlessly, he stood up, walking over to Lucie’s desk, where a flickering candle sat next to a scattering of papers. Stories were her refuge, and he couldn’t bear to watch this go on for another second. The paper on top looked like the final page of a story, and he scanned it quickly.
“...spent his days in bed, too weak to do anything but cry. He was convinced he would never be strong, and he felt like he’d failed everyone he loved. His mother was despondent, and it was his fault. His sister, lovely Princess Grace, would bring him tea and sit at his bedside, but he was sure he’d failed her, too. “
Jesse felt his throat tighten. Oh, Lucie. He almost didn’t want to, but he let his eyes slide down the rest of the page.
“The terrible disease slowly overtook him, and he died without joy and without hope. Now the beautiful Prince Jerrod is condemned to a wispy ghostly existence, longing to return to his loved ones, watching as they carried on their lives without him.”
Jesse stood in stunned silence for a long moment, staring at the paper. He no longer needed to breathe, but his chest felt desperate for air anyway. “Lucie, I’m-- What is this?”
She pulled her face out of her hands and saw him gazing at the paper. “No! Don’t read that.” She darted up from the bed and snatched it off the desk.
“Is this about me?”
“No.” She crossed her arms, the story crumpled in one hand. She wouldn’t meet his eyes.
“Lucie. Lucie, look at me.” He reached his hand out again, letting his ghostly fingers trail along her cheek. He knew she couldn’t feel it, but she slowly raised her eyes to his regardless. “I will admit that my life was not easy. My mother loved me, but she was stern, and it was very lonely, even with Grace. I cannot pretend that I was happy.”
“It’s just… it’s so unfair. You deserve so much better.” Tears rolled down Lucie’s cheek. She turned her face into his hand, closing her eyes, and he would have given more than he was willing to admit to be able to wipe the tears from her face.
“My Lucie, my light. I am happy now, happier than I ever dreamed I would be.”
Lucie blinked. “You--you are? But you’re still…”
“I may be dead, but my soul has never been more alive.” Jesse stepped closer, putting his forehead against hers. She took a shuddering breath. “People can live for a hundred years without living a minute; that’s what I was doing, all those years, locked away at home. But meeting you has filled me with life in a way a living body never could. You are my light, Lucie, my happiness and my soul.”
Lucie’s eyes fluttered open, and she gazed at him, her eyes brimming with tears. Jesse smiled softly at her. He had wondered before if ghosts could cry, and now he found the answer to be yes; tears streamed steadily down his own cheeks as well.
“You need not worry about my past, Lucie. Think only of the now. In the now, I have everything I’ve ever wanted.”
“But what if something happens to you?” She pulled away, and her hands became fists at her sides, wrinkling the material of her dress. “If this-- if this is your happiness, if you truly have what you’ve always wanted, I can’t help but fear that the universe, cruel as it is, will take it all away. Your ‘life’ as a ghost is so tenuous, and it could all fall apart so easily.”
“Oh, Lucie, it’s--”
“You’ve suffered enough!” Her voice was half whisper, half shout. “I can’t bear-- I simply could not bear to see you unhappy, ever again. I could not bear to lose you.”
Jesse stepped closer to her again. “You won’t, Lucie. I swear by the Angel, you won’t lose me.”
They stood there, together, for an endless moment, the oversaturated silence sinking into Jesse’s heart. Her eyes, locked on his, sparkled in the candlelight, and he almost had to look away. The look in her eyes was so vulnerable that his oath did not feel like enough, but he didn’t know what else to offer.
Lucie smiled, then, just slightly, but it lit Jesse’s world like a beacon. “You shouldn’t make promises you’re not sure you can keep.”
He smiled back. “Anything for you, my light.” Anything for you.

Kit Babysits Mina for the First Time
Summary: Kit babysits 8-month old Mina alone for the first time alone, and faces some trouble.
Word Count: 4404

“Are you sure you don’t want us to cancel?” Jem regarded Kit with worry, but he just shook his head.
“You’ve had tickets for ages. We’ll be fine.” He promised, gesturing into the nursery where Mina was settled in her crib for her afternoon nap. Tessa emerged from within, beautifully dressed in a deep blue dress that reached her knees, and gently shooed them away from the door.
“If Kit says he’ll be fine, he’ll be fine.” She chided Jem softly, then turned to her adoptive son. “If you need anything you can call either or us or Magnus, okay?”
“I know, Tessa. We’ll be okay.” He knew she saw through his fake confidence, as she did with everything, and hugged him.
“Say the word and we’ll stay.” She whispered into his ear, giving him a final out. But Kit was a Herondale and they never gave up on a challenge. He just hugged her back tightly.
“Enjoy your play.”
“We will, thank you. Jem has never had the chance to see it and my other children had such a love for Oscar Wilde.” They were travelling to London to go to dinner and to see The Importance of Being Earnest, an Oscar Wilde play that Tessa had wanted to take Jem to see. She had told Kit many stories about her and Will’s children and her friends’ children, including Matthew Fairchild, her son James’ parabatai, and his dog, Mr. Oscar Wilde.
Jem stepped forward to hug him before they left. “We left a full list of instructions in the kitchen just in case. We know you know what you’re doing but it’s your first time babysitting alone, and it can’t hurt to be there just in case.”
“Thanks. Really, Jem, I’ll be okay. I’ve seen and helped you and Tessa do this every day.” Kit smiled, reassuringly.
“Okay, well thank you so much for your help today. We should be back by eleven. We love you.” Jem said and Tessa echoed him, placing a kiss on his forehead.
“Love you too.” Kit said. He had become a lot more comfortable with saying that, though he was sure that it was impossible to live with Jem and Tessa for a year and not love them. They were kind and attentive, and never made Kit feel pushed to the side, even though they had their own daughter. In a strange way, Kit was also theirs and he cherished the feeling of having parents who openly showed him affection.
They walked away from him, waving and disappeared around the corner of the corridor. Kit turned and headed back into the nursery, curling up in the armchair with the laptop Jem and Tessa had bought for him. She would be asleep for another hour, and although Jem and Tessa usually left the room for her naps, content to have the baby monitor beside them, Kit didn’t want to leave her side in case anything were to happen.
Magnus would have been there normally, with his and Alec’s children: Max and Rafe. Kit liked them too, not as much as Mina, but he often kept them entertained. Rafe was six and enjoyed playing with Lego. He was quiet, but content to sit and let Kit help him build castles and towers. Max was four, and too young for Lego, though at the age where he wanted to copy his brother, but Magnus and Alec had bought him some large building blocks which he played with happily. Kit would sit between them and help, keeping the kids entertained whilst Magnus caught up with Tessa and Jem.
However, Rafe had come down with a cold and Magnus was looking after him. He didn’t want to risk passing anything to Mina, and so had regretfully informed her that he couldn’t babysit. Tessa had seemed disappointed that they would have to cancel their dinner and theatre reservations, so Kit had stepped in and offered to look after Mina. It was something he hadn’t done before and the whole idea made him nervous. He loved looking after her, but was left with a constant fear that somehow, he would mess it up, like he did with everything else.
He watched part of a movie for a while with his earphones in, until he heard her moving around in her crib; a sure sign that she was waking up. Quietly closing the laptop and storing it under the chair so he wouldn’t stand on it. He leant over the crib, looking down at his little sister, who was wearing a top patterned with flowers, her dark hair messy.
“Hey Min-Min,” he whispered, and she stared up at him, large, dark eyes blinking slowly. “Hi, baby. Good afternoon.” He cooed in a way that he would be mortally embarrassed about if anyone, but Jem and Tessa had heard. “Do you want to go get some milk?”
She made a noise that sounded like “Ki-Ki” which Kit translated to mean “Kit-Kit” and was the way in which she addressed him. He gently lifted her and laid her on the changing table, to put her into a clean nappy. Once he had done, and dressed her in some leggings, he carried her down to the kitchen to make her some milk.
She clapped her hands, making happy noises as he carried her and he spoke to her the whole way down, mostly repetitions of her name and telling her that they were going to get some lunch. He remembered that Tessa had said about how talking to babies helped them feel secure.
They reached the kitchen, which was one of Kit’s favourite rooms in the house. Copper pots and pans hung from the wall alongside bunches of herbs drying from the garden. He placed Mina in her high-chair so she wouldn’t crawl away whilst he was warming her milk. His hand dragged across the wooden table. It was here that he sat when Tessa went into labour, and her nonchalance towards the situation freaked him out, it was here where he saw Livvy for the first time since Idris, here where he gave his mother’s heron necklace to Magnus to give to… He shook his head.
This was the table where he ate chocolate pastries that Jem bought him from the bakery, this was where he sat down for meals every night with his family, where he realised on his first night, how much he had missed out on family life before he moved here.
He took the bottle of milk from the fridge, where Tessa had prepared them earlier, and placed it in the electric bottle warmer Tessa had bought, excitedly, as it was a quicker method than warming it in water as she had done with her first two children. Kit chopped up half of a ripe banana as the milk warmed and placed it into one of Mina’s plastic bowls. He turned his attention back to Mina whilst he waited for the bottle to warm, chatting to her the whole time.
When the beep indicated that it was ready, Kit stood up, untangling his finger from her tiny fist. “It’s okay, Min-Min, I’m just going to get your milk for you.” He took the bottle out, shook it to ensure the temperature was the same throughout, and squirted a couple drops onto the inside of his wrist. It was warm; not too hot, and so he took it over to Mina.
“Here, baby, let me help you.” He tied a bib around her neck and then held the bottle out to her. She reached up and held onto it, taking it from him. She drank, thirstily, Kit keeping a watchful eye on her to ensure she didn’t choke on it. Once she had finished, he passed her the bowl of bananas and she giggled, grabbing them and pushing them into her mouth.
Kit pulled the notes that Tessa and Jem had left for him. He read through it all, checking that there was nothing he didn’t already know, and saw a note at the end.
 Dearest Kit,
Thank you for helping us out, darling. We love you – you are a blessing. If you need any help (and admitting that is a sign of strength, not weakness), please call us or Magnus.
Good luck,
Love Tessa and Jem x
He felt his eyes water and immediately rubbed them. He was used to the kindness by now, but when they did simple things that showed him how much they cared, he was always surprised. He didn’t deserve all of this – he had been taken into a family and welcomed with open arms, and the fact that they trusted him with their daughter was so unexpected.
Mina was giggling over her bananas, her hands and face covered in a sticky mush.
“What mischief have you gotten up to, Min-Min?” He asked, humming as he used wet wipes to remove the mess from her. She laughed, happily, moving her arms up and down, tiny fists clenched. “How about we sit you down in the living room with some toys?” He suggested, hoisting her into his arms.
She kicked out with chubby legs, excited to be carried around by her brother but also at the age where she wanted to crawl everywhere. He smiled, placing her on the ground in the living room, and pulled out her toy box, placing some building blocks in front of her. They were some of his favourite toys to help her play with; she liked it when he built her castles to destroy.
He loved the living room. Above the fireplace, two paintings hung. One was of Will Herondale, his ancestor, Jem’s parabatai, and Tessa’s late husband. The other was of Tessa and Will’s two children, Lucie and James. On the top of the fireplace were several photographs of Tessa, Catarina and Magnus; of Tessa and Jem on their wedding day, of Mina when she was born, and his favourite: the four of them in the gardens of Cirenworth Hall, the house silhouetted behind them, taken by Clary, when Jace and his friends had visited in the summer. Mina was sat in Tessa’s arms and Kit was stood beside her, Jem behind him with his arms around his wife and his son. Kit had a copy of the photo in his bedroom.
For a while, things were fine. They built houses and she knocked them over, grinning and clapping her hands in delight, which, in turn, made Kit laugh with her. She picked up a brick, chewing on it and Kit tried to wrestle it from her, like he had seen Tessa do every day. However, when he finally got it away from her, she screwed up her face and began crying.
“Hey, Mina, it’s okay baby. Here, look at me, Min-Min, it’s okay. You can have it back; you just can’t chew it.” He said desperately, reaching across the bricks to her, but she pulled away from him. Her cries made him panic and want to cry too but he was the one in charge; he had to act like it.
“I’m a Shadowhunter,” he muttered to himself, “I fight demons, I can calm a crying child.” He stood up, and picked her up, so that her head was against his shoulder, and she beat her tiny legs against his stomach.
However, he was out of his depth. He had seen Tessa and Jem calm Mina with ease, but as he tried to rock her, she just screamed and hit at him with her fists.
Tessa and Jem shouldn’t have trusted him with their daughter. He felt his eyes well up. Kit had disappointed them, like he did with everyone else, and now he was going to have to face the consequences. They would send him away somewhere, maybe to the Shadowhunter Academy, and he would be all alone again.
He had to do something. Call Magnus or even Emma, so that they could fix this. He wasn’t cut out for it, and they had a lot more experience with kids. Of course, that would mean that Tessa and Jem would find out, and they would hate him.
His heartbeat quickened, and his breathing too, when suddenly, his attention focused onto the portraits. Will stared down at him, knowingly, and Kit’s eyes strayed down to their family photo in the centre of the mantlepiece. Tessa and Jem would never send him away. They may not be his actual parents, but they loved him much more than his father had, and they spent their time looking after him, and making him a part of their family.
He took a deep breath and calmed himself. Tessa had always said that telling Mina stories was a sure way to make her calm down. Kit cleared his throat and stared down at his sister.
“Alright, Min, I’m going to tell you a story, so you’re going to have to be quiet so that you can hear it.” He said, moving her slightly. Her cries seem to quiet slightly, and he let out a sigh of relief before he started his story.
“When I first moved here, before you were born, your mom and dad told me about my mom. They said she loved me so much that she had to leave me. Your parents had tried to help her, and she refused them, but she had this necklace. It was in the shape of a heron and your dad put a spell on it so that she could send a message to him if she needed to. For a long time, she didn’t, but then, she was attacked by some bad faeries and she was forced to. My mom… she passed away, but they kept the necklace.” Mira was crying still, though her tears fell silently. As he had been talking, he had brought her back to the nursery, where he drew the curtains, and placed her on the changing table. He changed her as he continued.
“They gave me the necklace and they told me about her and how she lived her whole life in hiding to protect me. I don’t remember her… Just vague memories of the song she used to sing. No, I’m not going to sing it,” he said as she looked up at him with wide wet eyes, “you’d wish I hadn’t.”
She giggled, thickly, even though she couldn’t understand what he had said, and Kit finished changing her, disposing of the nappy and wiping his hands with a wet wipe. He gently brushed away the tears from under her eyes and smiled at her.
“See, it wasn’t all so bad. You’re fine now, Min-Min.” She babbled at him, and he picked her up into his arms, pressing a kiss on her nose to make her laugh.
He took his sister back to the living room and pulled out the giant piano mat that they had. Jem had seen it and declared that he would try and teach his baby how to play. Mostly, she enjoyed crawling across it and Jem delightedly cheered her on, clutching Tessa’s arm and declaring that she would be the next Chopin. Kit thought that the most exciting part of the piano mat was Jem’s reactions and he secretly thought that Mina felt the same.
“Here you are, Min-Min. Compose a piece to show your dad later.” She giggled and crawled forwards. Kit had knelt beside her and absentmindedly hit some of the notes to make them clash or compliment each other. Every time he made them clash, Mina glared at him, pouting, and he was reminded of Jem.
Jace had been teaching him piano in the last year since he had left LA. It was something for them to do when he stayed at the Institute. He loved living with Jem and Tessa, they were definitely people he would consider as his parents, and his guilty feelings of replacing his own parents had gradually subsided with Tessa’s assurances that you can love more than one person without forgetting the rest. He had been visiting Jace a lot; he helped him with his fighting skills and took him on patrol. Kit had never been able to play an instrument before; his father thought it was a waste of time, and he wasn’t great at it, but he found himself enjoying it more than he had expected.
Jem and Tessa had unearthed an old piano for him and placed it in the newly renovated music room for him to practice. They respected and appreciated artistic, non-vital things, like music, unlike his father and encouraged him to pursue all of his interests, even if they weren’t related to being a Shadowhunter. It was a welcome change from LA with the Blackthorns where everything revolved around it. Kit liked the peace and quiet of Devon.
Mina had gotten bored of crawling around the piano mat, and had seized her stuffed giraffe, bouncing it on one note. Kit laughed, and drew her off the mat, and showed her an easy tune, moving her arm with the giraffe so that she would play it. She did and stared, wide-eyed, at him as if she didn’t know why the music sounded good. They kept doing it, until she dropped the giraffe.
She was easily bored and distracted, and Kit was more than happy to keep passing her different toys to entertain her. This time, she went for an animal puzzle where she placed wooden animal pieces into different sized holes. She had long since mastered the giraffe, which seemed to be her favourite animal, but she had trouble trying to place the lion in the meerkat hole and putting the elephant in the wrong way around.
He smiled as he watched her, finding it amusing the way she stared at the pieces with wonder, and then hit them against the bored repeatedly until they slotted in. Kit had never cared for babies, but Mina never failed to amuse him in the whole time she had been alive. Then again, Kit had never had a sister before, and he supposed that made her more interesting than a regular baby.
As dinner time fast approached, Kit carted Mina back into the kitchen. Tessa had prepared food for them in advance, and Kit heated up Mina’s sweet potato and chickpea mash, leaving it too cool so that it was warm, and then handed it to Mina with a spoon, after tying a bib around her neck, placing a small plastic cup of water beside her. She shovelled her food into her mouth. She was hungry, so she was more content to eat her food than make a mess with it.
Kit unwrapped his sandwiches and sat beside her, eating quickly. When she had finished, he wiped her face and brought her a yoghurt. He crunched on some crisps, and he washed the dishes quickly whilst she was preoccupied with her desert.
“Look at you, Min. Making such a mess.” He smiled, wiping her face again, and the tray of her high-chair. He placed her on the floor to crawl around, whilst he finished tidying the kitchen. At some point, Church wandered in, staring at Kit with wide yellow eyes whilst he prepared his food. Mina had tried to grab him, but used to her, Church had just jumped up onto a chair and then the table. This also gave him a better vantage point to watch Kit make his food.
“Ca-ca! Ca-ca!” Mina shouted, flapping her arms around. Kit understand that as baby speak for “cat” as she couldn’t yet pronounce Church.
“That’s right, Min. It’s Church the cat.” She babbled the same sounds again, and he clapped for her, making her copy him.
Church yowled in protest against the delay of his food and Kit hurried to finish spooning the meat onto his biscuits, whilst being judged by him, as usual. He placed the bowl on the floor where he ate, then scooped up Mina and took her away before she had a chance to crawl over to Church and bother him. Generally, he was fine with Mina; maybe sensing that Jem would be unhappy if he attacked her, or maybe it was because she was just so lovable, even the angriest cat in the world loved her. However, Kit didn’t trust him, given the amount if times he had growled at or attacked him.
Church started to eat, crouching down in front of the bowls, tail flicking slowly behind him to indicate that, although he was happy to be fed, he still didn’t like Kit. To protest, he stuck his tongue out at the cat’s back before leaving the room.
He took Mina to the bathroom adjacent to her nursery and ran a bath whilst she sat there, pulling out some toys. Watching her, through the door, so that he wouldn’t fill the bath up too much, he couldn’t help but smile at the sight of her babbling to herself as she played with her giraffe.
He checked the temperature with a thermometer and made sure that the bathmat was secure, swirling the water around to avoid hot spots that could scald her. Kit brought her into the bathroom and washed her hands and face before undressing her and gently lowering her in. She was at an age where she could sit up properly on her own, but Kit was ready just in case she were to slip. The bathmat allowed her to avoid that, though, and he began to wash her.
Part way through, she splashed him with the water, soaking his grey t-shirt. He laughed, and gently flicked some at her arm. She stared at the spot where it hit her, with wide, confused eyes and then started giggling, hitting the water with her palms. Kit used one hand to wipe the water from his face.
“Oh Min-Min, you really are trouble. Your poor mum and dad won’t know what to do with you.” He joked, as he finished washing her. She giggled at him and her voice was squeaky.
“You’re like a mouse. Min-Min the mouse.” He imitated her, making a squeaking noise that made her clap her hands in delight.
Kit gently lifted her from the water and wrapped her in a soft, fluffy towel. He dried her, then carried her to the nursery to get her changed into her pyjamas.
“Ki-Ki!” She called.
“Hey, Min. We need to shush now, it’s nearly bedtime.” She let out a large yawn, as if he had reminded her that she was very tired, even though she couldn’t understand him properly yet.
“How about I finish my story?” He suggested, and she babbled in what he took as agreement. He swaddled her in and blanket and held her, as he sat in the chair.
Then, he continued his story. “Before my mum passed away, she gave me to my dad, and he looked after me. He wasn’t anything like your parents though, and I was unhappy. I made do though; I learnt a lot about the Shadow World through the Shadow Market. Then, one day, the protection spells around our house went down and he passed away too.” Kit didn’t expand on it. He didn’t think telling a baby about his father being murdered by demons would be a good bedtime story.
“Your parents saved me and took me to the LA Institute. They had some other things to do before they could come back and look after me. I made some friends there; Livvy and Ty, and later, Dru. I met my cousin, Jace. You know him; the one that looks a bit like me and is completely full of himself, and his girlfriend, Clary. She’s wonderful. I think you’ll really like her when you’re older. Basically, whilst I was living at the Institute, a bunch of things happened, and I chose to leave.”
Kit paused for a moment, thinking. “I’m glad I did. Things didn’t work out for me there, but I now have new parents who love me and the best little sister in the world.” He gently tickled her under her chin, and secured her as he stood, lowering her into the crib. Scooping the giraffe from the floor, he slipped it beside her, and she held onto it, then he placed the blanket her.
She yawned, sleepily, and Kit pressed a final goodnight kiss to her head, before retreating back to his chair. When her breathing had slowed into soft snores, he went to the bathroom to empty the bath and clean the water from the floor. Watching the water trickle away in a miniature wave pool, he considered what he had said to Mina.
He was happy he left LA. Sure, he missed the ocean and the Shadow Market, and Ty Blackthorn, but he would rather get another chance at a family than to mope around the Institute, knowing that Ty wouldn’t return his feelings.
Kit had a wonderful life in Devon, and he realised that it was what he had always needed. He had spent most of his time in LA watching the Blackthorns being a family, and until he got Tessa and Jem, he never truly understood what he had been missing, and he realised now, more than ever, that he couldn’t have fit into their family, like he had imagined doing.
Once the bathroom was dry, and the towels were hanging on the rack, he turned off the light and headed back to the nursery chair, cuddling up with a blanket, and continuing to watch the movie.
It was there that Tessa and Jem found him later, fast asleep, mouth slightly open, with his head on his shoulder. They checked on Mina and found her sleeping just as peacefully.
Kit woke up briefly, when Jem lifted him into his arms and carried him back to his bedroom, but promptly fell back to sleep before his head hit his pillow.
Jem covered him in his duvet and Tessa placed the laptop on his desk, then they both bent to give their son a kiss on his head, and Tessa paused to smooth out his golden curls.
“We were lucky to find him.” Jem remarked in a whisper.
“We were blessed.” Tessa corrected. “We have two beautiful children, and each other.” They stayed for a moment, watching Kit breathe, then they left, hand in hand.
Thank you for reading - I really hope you enjoyed! This little family warms my heart.
Let me know if you have any other fic ideas you want to see, about them or Kitty. xxx

The Broken Hearts Part 5!!
I feel like I publish a new chapter once a millennia, so I don’t think many people are going to read it, but if you’re still here, I thank you from the bottom of my heart ❤️ BUT, because I never publish, I made sure that this chapter was extra long! Happy New Year!!
“ELLIE!”
Ella felt her entire body jolt awake.
“Lucie? What are you doing here?”
“I came as soon as I heard! How could I stay in Idris when there is trouble here?”
“What about your children,” Ella said, blinking away sleep. “Did you bring them?”
“I wanted to, but Jesse said it was ‘unsafe’ for them to be here. So we left them with Gideon and Sophie.”
Ella sat up and tried to blink away her sleepiness.
“What time is it?”
“It’s almost noon, you lazy bum. You must get up.”
“We stayed up late.”
“Everyone else is awake.”
Ella grunted. “I’ll be down in a minute.”
...
Ella walked into the breakfast parlor and slumped down next to James, who was reading over some papers. His daughter, Caspara, was on his lap, gurgling and talking to James, even though she hasn’t said her first words yet. Caspara always seemed to be talking either to herself or others, though what she was trying to say, no one will ever know.
“Hulloooo!” Ella said, crossing her eyes at Caspara. “How’s my favorite Herondale niece?”
Caspara giggled and stretched her hands out to her. Ella gave her one of her fingers and Caspara was quiet, leaning back against James’ chest and holding Ella’s finger in her hand.
“There she is! Our Sleeping Beauty!” Lucie said, fake swooning as she strolled into the parlor.
“Honestly Lu, couldn’t you wake me normally?” Ella said referring to her morning scare.
“Normal? I refuse to be associated with that vulgar word.”
“Lucie, stop terrorizing your poor sister.” Jesse said, coming from behind Lucie.
“Thank you, Jesse.” Ella said, grabbing a piece of toast.
Lucie slumped into the nearest chair. “You are no fun.”
Jesse rolled his eyes. “You should have thought of that before you brought me back from the dead.”
“Please do not discuss your resurrection this early in the morning.” James said, his face in his hands.
Ella looked at him and then at Lucie. She shrugged and gave her a face that suggested she thought James was being dramatic. Ella giggled.
“Are you two staying here long?” She asked Lucie and Jesse, who no doubt portaled in from Idris this morning.
“We don’t think so.” Lucie said. “Eva and Adeline should not be left in Gideon and Sophie’s home for extended periods of time for they might get too comfortable with them and begin acting out.”
“They take after their mother.” Jesse said.
Lucie glared at him. “As they should. Imagine having children like Jesse. What an absolute bore.”
Had Lucie and Jesse’s relationship not thrived on their bickering, Ella would have called a decorum. Instead she enjoyed the show for a while longer before turning to her brother.
“What are you reading, Jamie?” Ella asked, looking over his shoulder.
“He won’t tell us.” Lucie said.
Ella frowned. “Why not?”
“Because Sherlock Holmes likes to work alone.” Lucie said, conveying her annoyance with her tone of voice.
James glared at Lucie. “I’ll tell you, Ella.” Lucie gasped and up a hand to her chest. James continued speaking as though she’d done nothing. “I’m reading over the institute records. Maybe we are all overreacting and last night was just a power outage.”
Ella nodded and looked at her cereal. She didn’t want to remind James of the cruel voice that haunted her dreams last night, the one that spoke before the power went out. James and Cordelia were clearly worried enough.
So instead, she had breakfast with her siblings and niece. She’d figure it out later.
“Hullo Ben!” Jesper Carstairs said cheerfully, “We’re going to the institute and were told to pick you up.”
Ben looked at him through squinted eyes. “That sounds oddly vague. You are not going to abduct me, are you?”
“Of course not.”
Had the idea of Jesper Carstairs abducting Benjamin Penhallow—who was a good five centimeters taller than the former— not been so absurd, Ben probably would not have taken Jesper’s word.
But it was, so Ben obliged.
“Who’s ‘we’re’” Ben asked, referring to Jesper’s earlier statement.
“Oh, right. The Fairchilds are meeting us coming with us.” Jesper smiled. “Look, they’re right there about to cross that street. TILDY!” He called.
Matilda whirled around. “Stop calling me that!”
Jesper smiled. “She loves that pet name.”
“What does it mean?!” Ella exclaimed, slamming her head against her open book on the table. Said book was on demon attacks in the past.
Alex was sprawled upside-down from the edge of the sofa, bouncing a rubber ball on the wall and catching it with fluid expertise.
“Will you stop bouncing that bloody ball?” Ella said, after what felt like the fiftieth time he’d chucked it against the wall.
“You kiss your mother with that mouth?”
“I am trying to think, Alex. Something you have no experience with.”
Ella caught his ball before Alex could and sat on it. Alex stuck his tongue out at her.
“You are both children.” Said Jesper from where he sat on the floor entertaining baby Caspara, who Ella had taken with her to the library after breakfast.
“Oh, the irony.” Jocelyn said, not looking up from her book.
“Should we be concerned about this? The blackout, I mean.” Alex asked, sliding down to the floor. Caspara laughed and stretched out her hands for Alex to pick her up.
“I don’t know. It seems like a pathetic threat to me. But maybe that’s because we grew up around danger.”
“I think I agree with Ella, but I also don’t think we should ignore it. However unthreatening the message may have been, we shouldn’t just ignore it before we have a few answers.” Ben said.
The others nodded in agreement before they all fell silent again, reading or thinking.
“Wait a minute, look at this.” Matilda said from where she was seated. “There’s a demon that can supposedly ‘create’ darkness.”
Ella felt her eyes widen. She pushed past Alex and sat down next to Matilda. Soon, the six (well, seven if you counted Caspara, who was giggling in Alex’s arms) shadowhunters were all crowded around her, peering at the book.
“In Islam, they use this expression: Iblīs al-Qadīm. It translates to ‘The Ancient Iblis.”
“Iblis. Like, the common Iblis demon? Yes, they do leave darkness where they go, but enough to immerse the entire institute?”
“Perhaps this is a different type of Iblis. From a different realm; a distant cousin of the standard Iblis demon we would find on patrol.”
“We should ask an inside source.” Ella said.
Suddenly, all of the shadowhunters were staring at Alex Lightwood.
Alex furrowed his eyebrows before he realized why they were staring.
“Hell no.”
“Alex, come on.”
“How do we know they have the same tastes in men?”
“You have a dark charm.”
“No.” Alex said, scooting away. “My brother, Christopher, has a dark charm.”
“Alex, Iblis demons love you.”
“They begged for you to be the one to kill them last year, when we cornered them.” Jesper said.
“Those Iblis demons love them some Lightwood-Herondale boys.”
Alex looked exasperated. “Let me get this straight, you want me to seduce these ‘new’ Iblis demons to get information on what happened?”
“Precisely.” Ella said.
Alex sighed, knowing he wasn’t going to win the argument. “Even if I did agree to this, which I do not, how would we even go about attracting their attention?”
“You might want to leave that to be.” Jocelyn said with a devil’s smirk.
“I hate this.” Alex said.
“You’re doing great, darling.” Ella called from above.
“I hate this.” He repeated.
“Alex.” Alex looked up at where Jesper was calling him from. “Do it for the ladies.”
“Shut your face, Carstairs.”
“They’re coming! Everybody hide.”
Alex turned to a pillar in the empty warehouse.
“Not you, Alex!” Ella hissed. “Get back on your mark.”
Alex frowned and stood on the “X” Ella had drawn on the floor of the abandoned building.
At that moment, Matilda came in sprinting and jumping along the walls, tailed by an Iblis demon.
“You’re dead, little girl. You have no idea what kind of enemy you get ma— Oh, what have we here?”
Alex cleared his throat. He tried to lean against a pillar casually. “Hello there.” He said, trying and failing to sound seductive.
“How is this boy Anna Lightwood’s brother?” Jocelyn whispered, her face in her hands.
The Iblis demon, however, looked closer at Alex before swooning. “A Lightwood.”
“It said Lightwood with pure…I-bliss.” Jesper said, laughing silently at his joke.
“Idiot,” Ella said with a smirk.
“Lightwood boy, what brings you to these parts?” The Iblis demon inquired.
“I’ve come in hopes for a favor.”
The Iblis demon looked delighted. “What will you give me in return? A kiss?!”
Alex cringed, “No, not a kiss. That’s how my grandfather Benedict killed my grandmother and got turned into a worm.”
“Oh, of course, I’ve seemed to have forgotten about that bloody demon pox.” The lblis demon said.
“Consider yourself lucky.” Ella mumbled under her breath. Her father never let her forget it. She shuddered at the lecture he had given her, Alex and Jesper when they were thirteen. Ella had seen brighter days than those.
Alex cleared his throat. “In return, I grace you with my presence.”
The Iblis demon licked it’s lips, “Sounds good to me.”
Alex shifted uncomfortably.
“I was wondering… Erm, do I call you Iblis?”
“Call me ‘darling’.”
“I think I’ll call you Iris.”
The demon gushed. “My very own pet name! My sisters will be dead with jealousy!”
Alex looked at Ella, confused. Ella gestured at him to keep talking.
“Erm, alright then. I was wondering if you knew of any other Iblises?”
“Ibli”
“Right. Ibli coming into this dimension?”
“Hm, I can’t say I do.”
“Oh.” Alex said, making a show of looking disappointed.
“Wait!” The Iblis called. “I think I may know something about a distant relative of us Ibli coming a couple of days back.”
Alex smiled uneasily. “Fascinating!” By the Angel, he’s a horrendous actor. Ella thought.
“And, do you by any chance, know if they’re powerful?”
The Iblis hissed, “that they are. But my species of Iblis is much better. We are more civilized. Why, these Ibli are so easily manipulated and would do just about anything to please their master.”
Master?
“Is it always the same master?” Alex asked.
“No, it can be anyone.”
“Interesting. And do you think these Ibli, theoretically, could make all of the lights of the institute, let’s say, go out?”
“Of course.”
“Even if demons aren’t allowed to enter hallowed grounds?”
“These Ibli can do it from a distance.”
That was all the information Ella needed. She got up from her crouched position along the ceiling beams and unsheathed her seraph blade. She stepped forward, only to get pulled backwards.
“What the heck, Carstairs?”
“What are you doing?”
“I’m going to kill the Iblis.”
“You can’t kill Iris.”
“Who?”
“The Iblis.”
“Well, I’m not going to let her kill my parabatai.”
“Hey,” Ben said. “Don’t assume Iris's gender.”
“I’m not going to let Iris kill my parabatai.” Ella mended and jumped off the ceiling beam.
“Say, where’s that purple-eyed brother of yours?” The Iblis demon asked Alex, seconds before Ella’s blade plunged into it’s heart.
“That was a bit ruthless.”
“Would you rather it kidnap you and make you it’s husband?”
“We could have reached a level of compromise.”
“Alright then,” Ella said, wiping her blade on the grass. “Next time, you handle the situation as you deem fit.”
“I will.”
“Fine.”
“Fine.”
The other’s heads whipped back and forth as the parabatai brawled.
Ella stared at them, “don’t you have something better to do?”
“No, we really don’t.” Said Jesper.
Alex rolled his eyes. “Let’s just get out of here and figure out what we’re going to do next. I don’t like the feeling of this place.”
Jesper made a joke about what Alex had just said while Ella fell into the back of the line with Ben and Matty.
“What do you make of this?”
Ella shrugged, “I’m not one for solving riddles.”
Ben furrowed his eyebrows. “Iris said that it shouldn’t have been a spontaneous attack; though you may not like it, Ella, I can’t help but think that Owen disappearing was more than a mere coincidence.”
“I’ll have to agree with Ben.” Matty said, “It’s not like Owen to run off like that.”
Ella didn’t want to think about what had taken her nephew, not one bit.
“Who would do such a thing?” Ella asked.
“Somebody with a grudge against your family.”
Jesper, Alex and Jocelyn stopped joking around and laughing and turned to the others.
“A grudge against the Herondales?” Jocelyn asked.
Ben shook his head. “A grudge against the Grays.”
“Belial.” Ella whispered.
“Why would they attack Ella’s family and not Belial himself? No offense to your family, El, but why bother attacking the Herondales when Belial has made it clear he doesn’t care about them?” Jesper said.
“Because they are important to him. Don’t you remember?  He could have possessed James, and walked earth again, had he let him.” Matty said.
Ben nodded. “The Herondales have the ability to grant him freedom.”
“Well, this is just wonderful.” Jesper’s tone dripped sarcasm. “How many enemies must Belial have? A thousand? A million? How will we ever find who's behind this?”
They were all silent for a moment.
“Oh,” Alex said, more to himself than anyone else. “It might not be that hard.”
“What do you mean?” Matilda asked.
“Lesser demons don’t have the mental capacity to orchestrate something like this. What happened yesterday night, that wasn't an attack; it was a threat. Why else would someone go to the lengths of kidnapping the direct descendant of Belial, just to leave him somewhere in the institute unharmed and easily found? Moreover, why not attack all of the Nephilim? All lesser demons think about is feeding; they’re not evolved enough to feel things such as revenge. This is the work of a greater demon.”
Alex’s realization was left in the air. Nobody wanted to voice the possibility that this could be the work of a Prince of Hell. Ella exhaled. That doesn’t mean they shouldn’t talk about it.
“Does anybody know of the Princes of Hell? Which ones could potentially have contact with our earth?”
Jocelyn nodded. “It can’t be Sammael, Lucifer or Lilith. They’ve been banished and will continue to be banished for many years to come.”
“We’ve collectively decided it can’t be Belial.” Jesper said.
“Mammon hasn’t come in contact with Belial for years. Azazel doesn’t really care; he’s not one to start drama. Astaroth— ” Jocelyn said.
“What about Belphegor?” Ella interrupted quietly.
Jocelyn furrowed her eyebrows, “There haven’t been sightings of him in over a century.”
“But is it possible for him to come back now?”
“Yes, I would think so. Why do you ask, Ella?”
Ella swallowed. “Belial met James in a realm he stole for Belphegor. Belial is the reason he hasn’t been seen in so long; he’s the one that wounded him greatly enough that he hasn’t come back yet.”
They all looked at her gravely.
“Well,” Ben said at last. “I think we have our suspect.”

Forgiven: A Herongraystairs One Shot
This is my one shot gift for my 8,7K followers celebration for @daisyherxndale . I really hope you like this because I tried to pour my heart into it. It was really hard to write because I usually never kill anybody in my fics, but it doesn’t hurt to try (lol).
If somebody also wants a one shot gift from me, just hit my ask box. 😊
Couple: Will Herondale x Tessa Gray x Jem Carstairs Warning: death of a major character Setting: The Last Hours timeline
You gave up the fight You left me behind All that's done's forgiven You'll always be mine I know deep inside All that's done's forgiven
The starless night loomed on the London Institute like a thick cloth of dark blue velvet, and as Tessa was staring at it from the balcony of the drawing room, she felt happy. She had all that she wanted in her proximity: her husband, her children, even Jem was close although he couldn’t be as close to her as she wanted, but it was okay. Despite everything that happened lately, things seemed under control. She probably shouldn’t had been optimist because things could change in the blink of an eye, but what could she do?
“Mom,” James called from behind her and she turned with a smile. The lights were off, but James’ face was not completely hidden in the darkness. “You need to come out. Lucie has fainted, and…”
Tessa’s expression abruptly turned to apprehension. “What happened?”
“Come with me and I’ll explain, I-,” he began, then his voice stopped, as if he was chocking, and grabbed her hand to lead her to where his sister was. “I’m sorry, mama. I’m really sorry.”
“Sorry for what, James? Tell me what happened!” she demanded, trying to keep calm. “Why haven’t you taken her inside? Where is your father?”
James didn’t reply, he hurried towards the big doors that lead outside, moved by an oppressing anxiety. She had never seen him like this, she thought, but perhaps he hid it well. Once he opened the doors, Tessa couldn’t help herself and run towards Lucie. Cordelia and Matthew were also there, her parabatai keeping Lucie’s head on her legs while the other tried to hold her in place.
Lucie’s face was partially covered with blood, and her hair attached to her forehead. Her face was ashen, too pale, too lifeless.
She fell to her knees besides her and grabbed her face, caressed her forehead, and checked her pulse. “What happened, Cordelia?” she demanded again.
Cordelia was covered by blood herself and it had stained her dress. “We wanted to tell you, we really wanted to tell you and your husband about it.”
“What did you want to tell us? What, Cordelia? Speak, we don’t have much time!” she commanded, checking her daughter’s breathing. “Thank you,” she murmured to herself more than to them. “She’s still breathing. Have you applied some iratze?”
Tessa looked at James, who looked at Cordelia, who looked at Matthew. The three of them exchanged glances that she didn’t like – they were surely keeping something from her, and she wondered why they weren’t keen on revealing it.
“James…” Cordelia said, her voice almost a whisper in the dark. “Should I?”
James’s expression was grave and he shook his head. “I should,” he agreed, then his gaze moved swiftly from his two friends, who nodded. “We went to our grandfather.”
Tessa froze in place. “You did what? James, I told you, you shouldn’t look for him. We all told you. I don’t care who he is or what he does, I don’t want anything to do with him.”
“I know, and I’m sorry. We are sorry. Lucie… she… we…” James voice shook, and Tessa felt remorse in his words. “He struck her with his magic. We arrived just in time because she went alone to where he was hiding.”
Tessa squeezed Lucie’s hand and looked at her. “Oh, Lucie. Why? Have you called Jem?”
“Will went to Jem,” Matthew explained listlessly. “We met him when we got there. He decided to personally go to him because he didn’t trust somebody else to call for him.”
She felt relieved by the news, but still, something was wrong. “Why is she here, though? Do you want me to help you take her inside?”
“She’s here because she can’t move past the entrance,” Cordelia said, resigned. Tessa could tell that Lucie’s friend was trying hard not to be affected by the moment, but she could see it in her eyes. She wanted to cry. “It’s like there is an invisible barrier that doesn’t let us pass,” she explained.
How serious was this?
They all heard footsteps coming from the gate, and Tessa was relieved to see Will and Jem running to them, the carriage of the Silent Brothers barely inside of the entrance as if they had hopped off before it would completely enter the cobblestone yard of the Institute.
“Has she regained consciousness?” Will wondered, putting a hand on Tessa’s shoulder, as Jem knelt down to check on Lucie.
How long has she been like this? Jem asked to the younger onlookers.
James passed a hand through his already tousled hair. He was pacing behind Cordelia, and he couldn’t stay still. “A while,” he admitted, sighing in frustration. “Maybe an hour.”
“An hour? Why have you waited so long to call somebody?” Will demanded, his voice as sharp as a knife. He didn’t intend to unleash at James, but he was losing his mind. “What if she can’t be fixed?”
Calm down, Will. She’s still breathing. Now I need to…
Jem’s words were cut short, and nobody realized what had just happened until it was too late, because they were shoved away from the scene with a powerful thud.
Tessa stood still as intricate vines held her legs rooted to the place. She didn’t know how she was standing since she had been on the ground less than a moment before, and what was worse was that it wasn’t just her legs bound by the shrubs, but her hands as well. She looked down and saw the vines already cutting her skin, drops of blood falling on the cobblestone of what she called her home staining the pavement. That place had witnessed many encounters with their enemies, like during the clockwork war more than twenty years before, but she thought they were safe.
She thought the Institute was safe. She had been very content just a few minutes earlier, staring at the peaceful sky full of stars above her, why had life decided to change her mind and play this trick?
She didn’t believe in religion, she didn’t believe in any faith, but somehow, she felt as if this was the payback for something. Had she wished too much? Was this what fate reserved to people like her who were cursed with the special gift of immortality?
She felt her throat dry at the sight of her bound hands, but it wasn’t over. She glanced around her to check that everyone was alright: Will and Jem were getting back on their feet, while Matthew, Cordelia and James were still in a corner, huddled together and checking on each other. They didn’t look hurt from where she was, but she wasn’t able to see clearly. They had been thrown in opposite directions and quickly caught sight of her.
She searched for Lucie and she felt her heart fall in her stomach when she couldn’t locate her. She couldn’t move, and she could only see a part of the yard, but Lucie wasn’t there.
“Where is Lucie?” she asked the others.
“Tessa!” Will hurried to her without thinking, but Jem stopped him. He gazed at his friend with a frown. “Why are you stopping me, Jem? We need to free her!”
Look behind her, Jem murmured, and Tessa, despite being far from them, could also hear the tinge of agitation in his voice.
“How is it…”
“Possible?” Lucie inquired; a smug grin painted on her face. Tessa couldn’t see her daughter, but she knew she was behind her. “Everything is possible when you are a prince of hell, my dear shadowhunter. Oh, have I said dear? There is nothing dear about you. Your life is meaningless to me. But you were essential in the creation of my -”
“Who are you? Where is my Luce?” Will demanded angrily, balling his hands into fists. He wanted to advance towards Tessa and whoever was impersonating Lucie, but Jem was still holding his arm to keep him from rushing closer to his family.
“Don’t worry, I don’t intend to dispose of her body, if that’s what you’re worried about. She’s still here,” she touched her chest with a finger, “but if I decide she’s to my liking, I may not leave her. She’s a pretty girl, smart, willing to collaborate. Do you know that she came to me asking to resurrect her boyfriend?” she asked to no one in particular as she walked around Tessa until she could look her in the face. “It’s a pleasure to meet you, Tessa Gray. I reckon you’re my daughter, apparently,” she said with disgust.
“Belial,” Tessa recognized with contempt.
“The one and only. Your son over there tried to destroy me and didn’t let me take his body once I returned from my little vacation, but your daughter here… it’s good you had two children.”
She couldn’t believe her eyes. She had often asked herself who her father could have been, but she had always dismissed the idea of even trying to look for him, to know who he was, to find out what were his powers and what she could do with them. She thought it wasn’t worth it. She knew her father was a prince of hell, and princes of hell were almost like them, except they were fallen angels, which meant that they also took pride in having really lived in heaven before their fall.
Somebody gasped in the distance, probably Cordelia, and Tessa saw that she was wielding Cortana.
Belial turned, following Tessa’s eyes to her daughter’s parabatai. “That would be useless, my dear,” she mocked Cordelia with a bat of her lashes – so unlike Lucie. “You already tried to hurt me with that petty golden thing once, but I won’t be fooled again. And ah, a little reminder. If you stab me, your friend will also die.”
“No one is going to die tonight, Belial. If you leave quietly,” said Will.
Belial gazed at him, tilting his head with a smirk. His eyes were still Lucie’s light blue, but they had lost their depth. Now they were hollow, and mocking. “You don’t interest me, or you’d be already dead, William Herondale,” he admitted. “I came for the most valuable piece,” Belial continue, moving around Tessa and stroking her chin. But the gesture lacked affection, because that wasn’t Lucie, it was just her body. Tessa shivered.
“What do you want?” Tessa inquired brusquely. “If it’s something I can give you, I will. But you need to leave us alone.”
The prince sneered at her. “You have such a temper, Tessa Gray. The sacrifice will be worth it, for sure. Tatiana will finally be disposable after this.”
She didn’t have time to ask what was he saying, because it all happened too quickly. Tessa just saw Belial grab Cortana from Cordelia’s hand, and in a swift move, the demon freed her feet and her hands from the vines. She barely registered Belial’s movements as he used the legendary sword to pierce her skin. And yet, she had just glanced at her hands for a second.
She felt her chest warm, and she realized that it was her blood scorching her. Why was her blood so heated? She feared that Belial would strike her again, but she barely had the time to think about this as she dropped to the ground, her strength suddenly leaving her body. She would have probably hit her head if she hadn’t fallen on her arm. She noticed Lucie’s body lying on the stones and she felt relieved. Belial had probably left her, or so she hoped.
She was losing consciousness by the second, but she saw that Lucie seemed to be waking up, and she looked startled?
“Mama,” she heard her say, then she felt her daughter grab her hand.
She felt another person put her head on a warm surface; perhaps it was a pair of legs? She tried not to close her eyes and she saw a flash of black and blue.
“Will,” she whispered, but her voice was a distant murmur.
“Yes, Tessa, I’m here. I’m here, Jem is here, you’re going to be alright, he tried to reassure her, touched her face with his hand, kissed her hand… she noticed his hand was red, too red, too fast… “Don’t leave me,” he pleaded.
“My blood stained your hands,” she told him, as if she was saying something random, something ordinary. She thought her brain was acting up, why was she thinking about his hands?
But he didn’t care. He removed his evening jacket and pressed it on her chest, on her heart. Her heart. She had all the people she cared about around her. They were all part of her heart, and they were the reason why she woke up every morning. And yet, she felt her beat slow down, as if the love she had for them and the affection they also felt for her, wasn’t enough to let her heart keep its heartbeat. And in that moment, she was sure…
There is nothing we can do, she heard Jem say. His tone was blank, but she detected sorrow in it. Her time… her time has come, he added.
“What? But she’s immortal! She can’t be dying, she can’t!” Will shouted in the dark of the yard, his eyes still fixed on her. She could barely see him. “Tess, tell him. Tell him that you’re not leaving.”
Tessa opened her mouth to speak, but no words came out at first. “I’ve… I’ve always loved you. I love… everyone of you,” she murmured as she tried to look at all of the faces around her. “James, Lucie, Will, Jem… I love all of you.”
“I love you,” Will told her, his voice breaking by the tears falling on his face, which were now wetting her own. She noticed they were warm. “You are strong, Tessa. I know you’re a warrior. Remember what I told you once? You’re like Boadicea, you fight. You win.”
She tried to smile, but she didn’t know if she succeeded, since she felt a strange feeling seeping in. Emptiness. She was drowning somewhere, far away. She wondered if there really were a heaven and a hell, and if there were, where would she go?
“Don’t blame yourself for this, bach,” she told him. “This is not your fault. Not Lucie’s, not… James’,” she coughed, then she closed her eyes. Closing her eyes was comforting. If she would only…
She felt at peace after shutting her eyes, but she couldn’t tell them. They wouldn’t know. She wouldn’t know either how that night, which seemed so beautiful and haunting, had turned into her worst nightmare.
They would never forget the moment when Tessa died.
The way Will cradled her limp body into his arms to check her heartbeat and found no sound: emptiness, hollowness, as if Tessa had turned into a doll, a mannequin. The screeching sound of his heart breaking in the dead silence of the night as he wept on her corpse, who just a few hours before he had made love with. The same body he had worshipped countlessly as if she was a goddess, his goddess who would live forever. But then, why…
He couldn’t understand why she couldn’t be saved – there must be something they could do, something the Silent Brothers could do. But Jem was sure. He was sure that she couldn’t be fixed, there was no cure for her, and this shattered the heart he still knew could feel with clarity, with emotion. Because a part of him had died too, just like Will had lost a part of himself that night.
And James and Lucie were crying besides their father, both asking for forgiveness because they had been reckless, they hadn’t asked their parents and uncle Jem for help, and now this was the result. They shouldn’t blame themselves; Tessa had said, but what could they do?
Everyone was falling apart that night, even Cordelia and Matthew who weren’t related to her at all.
Who would have thought that a night so dazzling and full of bright stars would bring such an agonizing demise? But that was the beauty and the bitterness of life: it played with death every day as if living was a game of chess. And sometimes, life lost the bet, and the devil came to collect.
