Unpopular opinion: the gentleman bastards could take on the crows (all 6) and still win. Even if it's just Locke and Jean.

You know who will be a worthy rival for the crows? The Gentleman Bastards from Scott Lynch's Gentlemen Bastard series. Imagine a heist where Kaz and Locke and Jean compete against each other to get to the same prize. It will be just endless loops of them one-uping one another. The crows have stonger with a heart render and a durast, but the bastards are notorious for being always ten steps ahead of their rival with their foresight and planning.
P.S: imagine if Freddy Carter plays the character of Locke Lamora! It's so different from Kaz yet the core is the same!!

Rules: list 9 of your favourite characters and let people guess your type (in my case I mean qualifications for being my favorite, I don’t have crushes on them)
I have such a type it's not even funny. Can spot 'em a mile off.
In no particular order except Five is Character Of All Time so he gets to be exactly center.
Tumblr media
Hal Yorke (Being Human UK), Matt Murdock (Netflix Marvel), Bruce Wayne (not particularly Battinson but he does have one of the best batsuits, the actual Bruce Wayne that's my favorite is Unpretty's version in her fics), Kaz Brekker (Six of Crows), Five Hargreeves (Umbrella Academy), Locke Lamora (Gentleman Bastards), Eddie Brock/Venom (Marvel, they count as one), Arthur Lester/John Doe (Malevolent, they do too), Arthur Morgan (Red Dead Redemption 2)
All of these guys selected by virtue of The Amount Of Time I Have Spent Thinking About Them. The exception is Locke Lamora, who I only met last week but he vaulted into the group by virtue of being My Exact Type Of Character.
Tagging @assaily, @non-plutonian-druid, @neosatsuma, @candiliam328 and anyone else who may want to play consider yourself tagged

I 100% respect your S&B spam. Like, I've never finished season one, simply because I'm a fucking perfectionist who hates change, but SoC is one of my all-time favorite books, and I love it so much. Kaz Brekker is also my most blorbo of blorbos, or one of them. I love him so much, and I will defend him with my life. Also, Inej is the orginial Knife Wife. No one will ever beat her for that spot. (Maybe someday I'll finish season one and watch season two... someday...) Also, Nikolai is going to finally show up, which is wild. He's my other most blorbo of all time, and I totally didn't write a 1k word thing about him and Kaz being mirrors of each other.
Actually, the book I'm reading right now is giving me strong SoC vibes. Like, very strong. Specifically in the "bunch of chaotic idiots (affectionate) pull of incredible cons" sort of way. It's called The Lies of Locke Lamora, and it's about a little tiny gang (5 people) of conmen and thieves called the Gentlemen Bastards (which is the most amazing name, honestly) and all the shenanigans they get up to. It's actually a trilogy, but I'm only on book one right now.
Okay, that is all. Sorry for rambling! <3

That's valid that you didn't finish season 1. I actually out of watching it for so long because, again, Six of Crows is my absolute favourite series of all time, so I was worried the show wouldn't do it justice. But so far it definitely has (for SoC at least, I don't actually remember most of what happened in SaB since it's been so long since I read it). I do enjoy the SaB parts of the series, but I have to be honest, sometimes I delude myself into thinking that SoC is the main plot and that SaB is the side plot even though it's definitely the other way around.
And yessss!! I'm excited for Nikolai to show up!!! (That reminds me, I need to get around to reading Rule of Wolves, since I haven't yet oops). AND WYLAN MY FRIEND WYLAN!!!! I'm so excited for him to show up!!! I'm so excited to get the SoC gang all together finally!!!!
And highkey I'd read that essay lmao.
And oooh that book sounds interesting! I'll definitely have to check it out!!! Gentleman Bastards is definitely an S Tier gang name (its kind of giving Gentleman Demon vibes tbh so extra Leigh Bardugo tie in lmao).
Pleaseeee don't apologise for rambling!!! Infodumping is good for you and I really like to hear other people infodump about their interests to me (I like asking my brother and dad about their special interests (even though my dad doesn't know he has them bc he doesn't know he's autistic, but I do), which involves a lot of me pretending to understand prehistoric animals and sports and the like).
I'd totally be down to talk to you more about the Grishaverse if you wanted to!!

A (very) short musing about Locke Lamora and Kaz Brekker
The thing I find really interesting about the character Locke Lamora from the Gentleman Bastards series is how incompetent he actually is. Don’t get me wrong, Locke is a good schemer and he knows his way around a scam, but his real skill lies in acting. Locke is rarely competent at anything, but he’s really good at pretending he is. Most of the time Locke is entirely reliant on other characters to rescue him once things go wrong. This is especially obvious in nearly every fight scene in the books. When Locke wins a fight it's generally either because he got lucky or because Jean showed up to save him. He’s also incredibly arrogant. He gets overconfident and bites off more than he can chew. He doesn’t back off when he’s in over his head. Characters literally die because of this, but he never quite learns.
Compare this to Kaz Brekker from Six of Crows. Kaz is another schemer character who leads a gang (he also happens to be at least a decade younger than Locke, but we’re not discussing that). Kaz encourages the demon mythos that has built up around him because people being afraid of him makes his job easier. Unlike Locke, I do not think Kaz is arrogant. In fact, I’d argue that Kaz has a very realistic understanding of what he’s capable of and that he rarely if ever does something that’s over his head. Kaz simply does not allow himself to get into situations he can’t handle. He can be outsmarted, but it’s not easy, and he’s never completely outmatched.
I find the comparison between hyper-competent Kaz and Locke who is, quite honestly, a little bumbling, very interesting. On the surface, these characters are very similar (they are the same type of characters and perform very similar roles in the story), but the way they are handled is very different. Incidentally, while neither character is traditionally heroic, Kaz reads as far more of an anti-hero than Locke does, probably because of these differences in characterization.
While I ultimately like Kaz’s version of scheming mastermind better, I find the ways that Locke’s unique characterization influences the narrative fascinating and worth analyzing.

Anyway how much money do I have to pay to Leigh Bardugo and Scott Lynch for a Locke Lamora and Kaz Brekker crossover?
Just imagine the absolute c h a o s these two would release upon the world together.

Okay but imagine this
Locke Lamora, Lila Bard, Kaz Brekker, and Levi Glaisyer teaming up on a heist together. Locke, Lila, and Levi creating utter chaos. Kaz threatening to kill them at least 40 separate occasions. Levi reminding Kaz of Jesper, and him slipping up. Calling Levi Jesper much like the jordie incident. Locke and Kaz butting heads but ultimately coming up with an insane plan of equal bullshit and genius. Levi and Lila talking about magic and just GUYS IMAGINE
