Cahara the Skank (Character analysis)
Tw: The topics of 1500s prostitution, violent rape and suicide ideation
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Text version under cut:
Cahara as a protagonist
“Cahara of the South… He originates from the Eastern Sanctuaries. A bastard child left on his own at a very young age. Somehow this poor soul found his way to these dungeons…”
Cahara grew up under unfortunate circumstances, as he was abandoned in Jettiah he had to learn nothing in life came easy or freely
He had three choices to be a pickpocket, burglar, Or lead an honest life
But this choice means little past starting skill/item. No matter what Cahara becomes a mercenary.
“As you grew older you took part in various mercenary armies and learned the dirtiest tricks to stay alive. You were taken in by a notorious veteran highwayman and you joined his little band of criminals and ex-soldiers.”
Instead his first real life choice is if he will stay beside his first real allies or ditch them for his life.
They do not join him in the dungeons if they live
“During one of your many raids, your brigade got ambushed. The odds were seriously against you. You could have just abandoned your comrades and kept you life, or you could have fought to your last breath...”
He didn’t have to take this mission, however his mental narration states as if he does: shoving down fear for the money.
“Something is clearly not right about this mission and you have felt nausea since the the moment you agreed on the job. But you are short on silver and the reward is all that matters in the end.”
Really, he shoved his own feelings down for Celeste
"Celeste, you're still doing this job with the little one on the way and all?!"
Cahara is not opposed to Celeste’s sex work, instead he is opposed to the men who want her due to her pregnancy
"If anything, I feel like there're more gentlemen folks asking for my services these days."
"This isn't right. I don't like it."
"Girl's gotta eat and now I got the little one to feed as well”
"I'm a man. I should take care of you two."
“I’m leaving tomorrow if— no when I get back things will change. You just wait and see!"
He doesn’t tell her what to do, only stating what he himself can do for her
Sadly, he either already had a sense this could be his end or didn’t even let himself think this would be the last time he spoke to or saw Celeste in the flesh
"Just promise you do come back."
He knocked her up in a brothel and contracted syphilis.
“You also get an itch in your groin area...”
Unfortunately a sign of the sorts of people who’d pay for her services without care for her body.
After at least speaking with Celeste he fully made up his mind. He wouldn’t come back without the cash.
“But didn’t he like it?”
Cahara as an NPC
"Oh hey."
"You got me out of here!"
Upon meeting Cahara in the prisons of the dungeons, he is quick to join your party after a short conversation
[You ask him] “What are you doing here?"
[He answers] "Wwell...”
“I do have a mission here, but let's save that story for another day, yeah?"
Regardless of your questioning, he speaks quite anxiously. Stuttering or going silent in an out of character sequence
[You ask him] "Why were you imprisoned here?"
[He answers] "I was caught by one of those malformed prison guards”
“Your conversation took an awkward turn for some reason...”
Prison guards are shown to be sexually violent to those they have access to. Both in their dialogue, their attacks and how defeat by them causes incurable hemorrhaging from sexual injuries.
Cahara does not show signs of this hemorrhaging, however D’arce doesn’t have a concussion either despite nearly having her skull caved in. Both lack status effects for the sake of balance.
When Cahara robs you he has a preference for stealing healing items
This may be his attempt to patch himself up as there is no canon cure for internal bleeding.
[D’arce’s prison dialogue says] "Le'garde... You were supposed to be here…”
When in the prisons most characters bring up your common mission. D’arce, Ragnvaldr and even Enki bring this point up
Cahara breaks this formula
[Cahara’s prison dialogue says] "Tell me... Did the guards ever capture you here?"
He wants to know if he was the only one. He wants to know if there was anything he could’ve done. He’s seeking solidarity. He’s seeking kinship
"Don't let the dungeon have it's way with you. Bye."
"Talk about traumatizing events... Sheesh…”
"This place is starting to get into my head...”
Does this sound like the words of someone unaffected by the dungeons? He is nonchalant but he is not well. In fact that last line is repeated 11 times. He has 18 unique dialogue lines in party talks, none of his dialogue or anyone else’s appears nearly as many times repeatedly.
He’s gone into shutdown, in the upper areas and especially the prisons and areas around it he just cannot hold up. Mentally he cannot juggle his need to keep moving forward and process what happened.
This leaves his mind to go entirely unfiltered when he is in a space where he can think. Suicide ideation and turning to sex for comfort being his two major callings in this state. Sometimes even mashing together through his willingness to marry a marriage, a very literally dangerous form of sex.
"Hahaha, this is too good"
"Dying down here is most likely the easiest way to go!"
'I'm starting to feel like death would be the easiest option."
“Cahara seems really enthusiastic.”
"Just don't destroy my anus with those big muscles of yours, okay?"
"Ehh, well that's a freaky suggestion, but fine."

Genuinely it's taking me so damn long to get through the Gentlemen Bastard Sequence because I'm listening to the audiobooks and it's a regular occurrence for them to say something so out of pocket that I actually have to pause it until I've stopped wheezing

speaking of wasn’t the misogyny in chicken little fucked up. I know you’ve said this exact thing before but goddamn they literally brainwashed her
it was so fucked up and today we'll be discussing the misogyny suffered by chicken little (2005) characters Abby Mallard and Foxy Loxy. dont be fucking mean to them or else.
first of all the level of appearance based misogyny directed towards this little bird was more accurate to middle school in the early 2000s than anything turning red did.
Tumblr media
they do this fisheye lens and call her Ugly Duckling* which is like rude and indicative of social status in canon, but just a real fucking dick move by animators making a movie for kids (including girls who get bullied for their appearance and the peers that bully them).
*expanding on the Ugly Duckling thing, connor @turochamp made a really good point on a call about the fact that shes going to grow up to be a swan and therefore beautiful and Deserving Of Respect. if i were writing this and i did a flash forward, i would make her an adopted gosling and she would be on estradiol.
Abby is consistently mocked by the narrative (but rarely if ever mocked by her own friends) for being emotional and trying to help her friends with their emotions. why, as a person making a movie for children, would you tell children this is bad? because you are the kind of person who would write that rotten bastard buck cluck as sympathetic.
if you are ever mean to Abby Mallard ever in your life i will hunt you down and you have to be nice to her she is just a sweet little bird look at how she sits in the theatre seat
Tumblr media
moving on to Foxy Loxy. female bully characters often get treated especially poorly because they get little, if any, defense. they are often used as an outlet for misogyny in some truly ugly ways. the most common version you see is making them in some way more "masculine" than the sympathetic female characters.
Tumblr media
shes stockier (which im honestly relieved for; the alternative would have lead to bad places), she wears overalls, and shes a proficient athlete in both dodgeball and baseball. if we're talking about female bullies being made to seem more masculine, it's also worth mentioning that Goosey Loosey (left) is voiced by Mark Walton for the few speaking lines she has.
now it's time to get into the part of the movie that anyone older than 14 was very disturbed by:
Tumblr media
what the hell and also fuck was this supposed to be if not something truly evil?
jesus christ man i dont even know what to say but if its been a while since youve watched the film, heres a refresher of the sequence of events. spoilers for a 17 year old movie:
aliens rampage through town, vaporizing citizens and teleporting them into an interdimensional holding cell
the vaporization process impacts foxy loxys brainwaves, making her overtly feminine and extremely dumbed down
the aliens, now reconciled with chicken little and his piece of shit father, offer to "unscramble" foxy loxys brain
runt of the litter stops them, claiming that "shes perfect!" and implying that the two of them are now romantically involved
what the fuck. i dont even know what to say. this is so nightmarishly bad that im just gonna skip to some final notes.
there are a couple last points that i wanna bring up, such as the action movie adaptation of their adventures at the end of the film.
Tumblr media
yes this is real official disney art that they thought was fine
you may have noticed earlier on in the movie Abby emphasizing the importance of closure using a magazine intended to parody Cosmo, featuring a duck model on the cover. a duck that looks very similar to that model portrays Abby in the action movie version. here's my impression of the writers room. "do you gentlemen see this drawing of a 13 year old bird? well, shes a girl, so we have to make sure that we give her BODY DYSMORPHIA!" . clap.
Foxy Loxy's movie design only appears in the video game adaptation but i felt it was worth mentioning. she, like Abby, is weirdly oversexualized in this (theres only so far you can take the "its a parody" argument), but i want you to take note of her teeth. thats right she has evil metal fangs, intended to evoke her real-life counterparts braces. once again, just a real dick move as a choice for people making an animated movie for kids
the last point of misogyny i want to bring up is that suffered by Chicken Little himself. he did suffer misogyny, especially from the animators pre-transition. what's transition for a little animated chicken?
Tumblr media
why, its when they finally decide to make him a boy so that hes more relatable to an audience of boys and boy-alternatives (i heard theyre called girls but im not sure. i dont work for barbie.) so they solidify this decision by going through all his 3d models and deleting the little pink bow he wore. also they fridged his mom (her name is chloe btw) to make buck cluck more sympathetic and explain his awful parenting. it did not work even a little bit.
theres also something to be said about how the mom alien is treated as the softer but deferent emotional voice, but the dad alien is ultimately justified in the mayhem he creates.
TLDR: this is a disney movie about playing baseball for your father's approval and it did not treat women very well. there were too many mean-spirited choices to dismiss, but they were choices, and the structure of the movie can remain intact with a decent rewrite.

'The Republic of Thieves' --A Review
Tumblr media
Much like the titular Gentlemen Bastards of the Gentlemen Bastards sequence, my reviews have wandered across a couple of platforms before winding up here. (The Lies of Locke Lamora I posted on my Substack-- hey, you should subscribe by the way- it's free and I average about one post a week so I won't clog up your inbox, I promise. Red Seas Under Red Skies landed on the O.G. Blog (also worth a peek if you haven't been there.) Locke Lamora was a revelation, Red Skies was good- but gave me Die Hard 2: This Time It's On A Plane vibes that made me worry about the next volume, The Republic of Thieves- but you know what? I should not have worried. I should not have worried one little bit.
The book opens with Locke and Jean still on the run- but instead of enjoying the last of his life as Locke wanted, Jean has become obsessed with finding him a cure to the poison that infected his body following the events of the prior book. Jean's quest is largely fruitless and Locke is on the doorstep of death when they get an unpleasant job offer that promises to save Locke's life. The Bondsmagi of Karthain come calling, more specifically the Archedama Patience who, as it turns out, is the Mother of the Falconer, whom they defeated, and mutilated- but did not kill at the end of the first book.
She promises to cure Locke, in exchange for which, she's going to employ them both in Karthain-- where elections to the governing Konseil, held every five years are imminent. The Bondsmagi, knowing that their power- the misuse of which lead to the downfall of the Therin Empire- hold themselves apart from the city they govern, preferring instead to jockey for power through the dueling political factions that govern the city-- the Deep Roots Party (Patience's party- the old guard) and the Black Iris Party (which represents the modernizing, new guard).
Locke doesn't want anything to do with the Bondsmagi, but is in no position to disagree and Patience sweetens the deal by revealing that their counterpart for the Black Iris Party is none other than the often spoken of, but so far not yet seen a former member of the Gentlemen Bastards- in the case, the Gentlelady, Sabetha.
Meeting Sabetha was inevitable at some point in this series. She's been haunting the first two books and the backstory between her and Locke is hinted at, but never fully explored until we get to this book. As Jean and Locke accept the contract in Karthain and Locke is purged of the poison running through his body, we get the story of Locke and Sabetha as the other thread interwoven through the main body of the narrative.
They go way back, as it turns out, all the way to Shades Hill, where Locke catches sight of her red hair and is instantly smitten. Soon, she vanishes, and then Locke is swept up by Chains and brought in the Gentlemen Bastards where Sabetha is already a member and they reconnect after a fashion. As they all grow older and get into their teenage years and deal with things like hormones and figuring out how to work together, Chains kicks them all out of the house and sends them to Espara to put on a play- the Republic of Thieves. They get there and have to figure out how to first, bail out their contact-- Jasper Moncraine, who is in prison for insulting a noble and then they have to deal with the business of putting on a play-- which, after some shenanigans and an unexpected murder, they manage to pull off-- but the more important thing is that Sabetha actually gets Locke to recognize her for herself and not as some shining object he placed upon a pedestal. That part takes a while and can be something of a slog to get through, but I think it's important enough for both characters that I would overlook it.
That brings us back to the present, where Locke and Jean reach Karthain and get to work. The beautiful part about their situation is that they know Sabetha as well as she knows them, so the hijinks between the two sides get interesting (she drugs them and dumps them on a boat heading away from Karthain when they oust her spies and watchers, she replaces them with sweet little old ladies- knowing that Jean won't hurt grandmas, etc.) She and Locke have a complicated dance around their feelings, but ultimately acknowledge them and despite some blunt warnings from their Bondsmagi employers, they continue to bring their best at each other while continuing to see each other and eventually, Locke makes it her choice: if she needs space, time or something else, he'll give that to her and when the election ends in a tie, they go their separate ways.
Patience reveals what she believes to be the truth about Locke- that he's the reincarnation of a very powerful Bondsmagi who tried to cheat death and she thinks succeeded in Locke. She shows first Sabetha and then Locke a picture of the Bondsmagi and his wife and Sabetha is so disturbed by this, she vanishes again. Jean and Locke are unsure of the truth of the matter but both have been burned by the Bondsmagi before, so don't really trust what Patience has to say.
At the end of the book, however, the Falconer recovers his mind and then his powers, before killing Patience, his mother.
Overall: I flew through this book. Any concerns I had about the series after Red Skies were blown into tiny smithereens. After teasing Sabetha throughout the first two books, the payoff when she's finally introduced is perfect. Weaving the Bondsmagi back in and bringing them back around from the first book? Perfect. Setting up the seeds of the next volume, The Thorn of Emberlain- perfect! I don't know what the original plan for these books were/is-- I've seen chatter on the internet that seven volumes are planned, but even if no other books in the series make it to print and Lynch pulls a complete Rothfuss, these three books are delectable. They're immersive without being dense, the characters are well-rounded and excellent and they're just a pleasure to read. Easily one of my favorite series out there right now. My Grade: **** out of ****

Red Seas Under Red Skies Book Review
Scott Lynch's second addition to the Gentlemen Bastard series, PIRATES PIRATES PIRATES (to be allowed to sink in everyone's heads with lots of adventures spindling this novel) the brilliance calibre to rate this novel is enigmatic, and here's why even if many found this book a bit too slow-paced, it was exactly what Gentlemen Bastard's series needed.
Locke and Jean after tragic loss of their very gentlemen bastards are found in the gambling fountain of Tal Verrar, the land of fortunes ready to bet their money over a few deck of cards.
The con-artist Locke Lamora changes his disguise to Lecanto, a fine gentlemen who eyes on everyone's hunger to reel in the fantasies of solaris. We are back on deceiving people, bridging past new challenges yet we are also tapping into the darker sides of Locke's and Jean's character. Scott's brilliancy to remind us our characters are no more than humans that readers relate to breaches in their way of earning their status through the gambling inns.
Ahead of the mess Locke gets swept into, barely keeping above the waters, he is poisoned. Now everything depended on playing puppets under Strago's fingertips. We enter a new avenue on a sea voyage.
Every way possible Scott's foreshadowing gets better and better in the second book. The custom chairs, the deck of cards that mystiques into concrete come to click into place.
Remarkable characters come into the journey. One of the most commonly discussed element of the second book in the sequence is its pacing for the second act. It felt like we were pushing through a whole chunk of 400 pages and more of voyage and unprecedented attacks. However, there was a reason and I believe when I traced my eyes past it I was shell-shocked.
Scott Lynch purposely intended the readers to stay longer in the sea voyage, learn the language of sailors, go down into every meticulous detail of politics in the downplay because Scott wanted us to experience the time taken to shed someone's doubts and trust someone. We were not only in the sea with Locke, but we were experiencing the trust he was building with the pirates.
And I believe this was the best part of The Red Seas Under Red Skies because it wasn't just only a concrete piece of fantastic narrative, it was an immersive experience.

have not read the question but J and D and also W cause you know
This is what true love is all about <3
J. Name a fandom you didn’t think about until you saw it all over Tumblr.
I want to say Black Sails but that would be a lie (because that was you and not tumblr) - probably Severance. I'm not watching the show (tho I am tempted) but I definitely didn't know it existed before I saw tumblr weirdos losing their mind over new blorbos.
D. A pairing you wish you liked but just can’t.
I could probably name a few of those. Zachary/Dorian in the Starless Sea (love the book), Sabatha/Locke in The Gentlemen Bastards Sequence (i love their current chemistry but what on earth is that past romance???), and like every second straight ship in a show ever
W. A trope which you are virtually certain to hate in any fandom.
Romantic Soulmate AUs. Nobody Died AUs. Everybody Is Happy AUs.
I think this shows unfortunately well what kind of fan I am 😂

I love how Chains nails down parenting bits that most parents absolutely butcher like he has a conversation with locke basically telling him "your emotions are valid but silently pouting won't bring you anywhere. you have to communicate your feelings, and I can see you're struggling to find the vocabulary to do so yourself so let's try and figure it out together" all while getting wrong some pretty basic parenting stuff like uhh.. not regularly giving alcohol to your malnourished 7 year old
