But the magician shopkeeper and his trans/NB spouse who wore a fancy early 19th century dress to the ball.
Job's son who was flirting with Aziraphale (hilariously played by Ty Tennant giving Michael Sheen heart eyes in front of his dad lmao)
Even the tough macho man in Scotland that Aziraphale borrows the phone from - using it for "Grindr".
Plus of course Michael, Uriel, Muriel, and Dagon also all being non binary/gender queer characters.
With all this, there was no homophobia, no one batted an eyelid at any characters sexualities, sexuality wasn't even brought up, characters just are who they are and like who they like. Its a non issue in the GO universe.
AKA my favourite type of queer representation. The same type found in The Sandman (show not comic).
And whilst there was plenty of drama and not everyone gets a happy queer ending (YET) there was no queer trauma to be seen. No hate crimes, no "bury your gays", no stupid discussions about how HARD it is to be out of the closet in a bigoted world, because the GO world isn't bigoted.
Its SUCH a BREATH OF FRESH AIR.
I know we have similar experiences in The Sandman, In OFMD, and even in WWDITS, but each time a new show takes this very new approach towards queer representation I feel like I'm once again sinking into a comforting hug from someone I love, who loves me back.
Its just really fucking wonderful to see. I hope we keep seeing it more and more often.
Just hit 5k followers and normally this would be a cause for celebration but with the current state of things, it’s hard to find a reason to celebrate. Hug your trans friends extra hard today. Give them all the affirmations you know they need. Tumblr was supposed to be a place for us to come and find others like us, but the discourse we’ve been seeing lately is pushing our fellow queers away. My friends are getting banned for being themselves. This isn’t right. What happened to the tumblr we all know and love? Was it ever really there? Fuck.
i work in resale/warehouse and we got a blm and pro-lgbtq shirt and my coworkers were worried if we put it out it could offend someone…
offend who? assholes? racist? homophobes? nah i don’t like that.
i def said something but like this pissed me off so much i had to share cause wtf . than my supervisor said if anyone was offended we’d take it off the floor??? i said i’d quit. cause wtf.
Well, there are some of us that want to follow bodybuilding, fitness, healthy eating, cooking, running, and similar things. But it's full of people that are sexualized and most of them are no offense LGBTQ and some of us are not part of it, nobody has anything against it but still, there are other sexualities and sex preferences. Although no matter the sexuality shouldn't these things be about improving yourself not sexualizing yourself?
I know that I will face a lot of backlash for what I write here since people with closed minds will read it and misunderstand what I write. I don’t care and I am write this from the bottom of my heart and I think this a story that many can relate to even if they are fore different culture, heritage etc.
I am born and raised in a different country from my family heritage which is Norwegian. Norway is a big country with a small population of a bit over 5 million. In the past Norway was conquered by Denmark and Sweden before getting it’s independence day on 17th May 1814. However, our country are still very entwinned due to becoming Scandinavia and having similar langue and culture. We see each other as siblings relationship between us so a lot of teasing and bickering been us. Anyway enough of Norway’s history.
As many children who are second generation immigrants when growing up as child you start looking for people who are from the same culture, who speaks the same language as you etc around you as friends since it very human to connect to people who are the same as us. It gives us comfort and makes us feel less lonely in this new place for your family but also connects back to the family in your parents’ homeland because even though you can connect to them it will never been 100% since you weren’t raised there.
When you get older you start notice that their hardly any person similar to you on tv or films which everyone knows is not a nice feeling because you think what about us aren’t our history, our culture etc just as important as the people original from here. So when I found out that Little Mermaid was ‘ Den lille havfrue’ story that my grandmother used to read when I was a child I was delighted. Sure, She wasn’t Norwegian but she was Danish and since we had such a entwinned history she was my representation in the Disney princess.
~~~~~~~
After secondary school that when slowly but surely I learned about Black and Asian people not having representation in the Disney and other movies. I was shocked and disappointed at see the lack of representation. I was delighted when Princess and the Frog, Moana, Encanto, Soul, Black Panther, Bao and Coco and the other films came to the screen from Disney that showed representation. Here was not only representation but also somewhere where we could get to learn about these different culture, family interactions, beliefs and more. Just as when you travel to a new country inside of just going to tourist attractions but also go off the beat track and visit place that the locals go to get a true experience of a country and it’s people.
Also an other film I would like to bring into this representation is Brave since it was the first showing of Scotland and it culture since a lot people lump Scotland together with England. Since they don’t see that they are different country and different and shared history.
I was excited since Disney seems to be listening to our demands of more representation in their movies. However, they Disney has now let me down and so has many people. They decided to do an American actress as Ariel.
I was shocked and horrified since Little Mermaid is a Danish story and so the film should have a Danish actress especially in a when we all calling out for representation in the film world especially for the younger generations. H.C Andersen was the William Shakespeare, Harper Lee (Not very good at famous US authors. Sorry.) of Denmark.
Can Denmark have a moment to shine? We could have got a new Danish actress to play in their country’s story.
So why did the actress have to be American??
You all talk about representation's so why can’t Little Mermaid knowledge her own Danish heritage?
A lot of people have been complain that I am beginning ridiculous and she ‘just’ a fish. BULLSH*T!! If Little Mermaid was written by an Asian author and then Disney came a long and made her white there would be outrage and calls of white-washing all over. I just noticed how hypercritical people have become.
Also I am called Disney lazy because we have been asking and asking for new POC Princess. Instead of giving us a new one they took an old already done Princess story which feels lazy to me.
Also Disney has over looked surprise surpises Little Mermaid’s LGBTQ themes.
Little Mermaid = Hans Christian Andersen (the author)
The Prince = Edvard Collin (H.C Andersen’s unrequited love interest)
The Princess = Edvard Collin’s fiancé.
The Little Mermaid loses her tongue, voice, feels pain when she walks and feels as if she doesn’t feel as if she fits in to the mermaid world which could representing struggles of H.C Andersen in society at the time.
~~~~~~~~~~
I can understand why people are angry about Little Mermaid being black and not white but I DON’T CONDON OR ENCOURGE RASCISTS COMMENTS to Halle Bailey. She is a sweet and kind person and doesn’t deserve this.
However, if they really want more representation then they should have chosen a black Danish actress since as like a lot of black people in they world they aren’t as represented as the white Danish. Since a lot of us get stereotyped that all Scandinavians are all Blondie hair, blue eyes, really tall and that we are all still Vikings.
However, I am not surprise that Disney pretend ‘wokeness’ and doesn’t mind over looking and writing away a whole culture and history for their ‘wokeness’ just like the good old days.
REPRESENTATION is for EVERYONE!!
Now I am scared what they will do to Frozen.
