It’s fascinating how Jean Valjean is constantly associated with imagery of being buried alive.
His literal near-burial in the coffin outside Petit-Picpus is the most obvious example of that. But it’s in the sewers chapters as well— he has to face the horror of nearly drowning and being buried alive deep underground in the filth beneath the city.
And that imagery a running motif throughout his entire storyline. His imprisonment is constantly compared to as a burial, a living death; being in prison is like being trapped and drowned underneath an enormous weight, unable to move, unable to escape, with everyone around you refusing to acknowledge you are still a living human being.
In his dream before the Champmatheiu trial, Jean Valjean had a nightmare where he’s surrounded by a faceless crowd of indifferent people, who tell him:
‘Do you not know that you have been dead this long time?’
I opened my mouth to reply, and I perceived that there was no one near me.
The core horror of Jean Valjean’s plotline is the horror of being buried alive. It’s the horror of being constantly told that he is dead when he’s still living and suffering and desperately struggling to escape—- but suffering alone while he’s buried in a place so deep that no one can hear him.

y’all know what’s a little crazy? the fact that in fandoms, especially those, which are based on books, podcasts etc. where you don’t know how the characters look, most of the fanart looks p much the same. like ofc there are differences but with major things there’s p strong consensus within the fandom. i find that kinda crazy but really fascinating.
same thing with fanfiction. people just decide what kind of traits do these fictional characters have and everybody just agrees? like i love it but it is kinda weird but also really fascinating.

Characters I claimed as aromantic based on minimal evidence ‘cause lord knows we don’t get real representation:
Sasha James (The Magnus Archives)
Diana (Market of Monsters) —this series does have some canon ace characters though
Lee Ping (Detentionaire)
Katniss Everdeen (The Hunger Games)
Arthur Lester (Malevolent) —this one’s a pretty widely accepted headcanon
Ororo Munroe (X-Men)
Sam Manson (Danny Phantom)
Raven (Teen Titans)
Enjolras (Les Misérables) —just listen to Red & Black
Bethany Walker (Jumanji: Welcome to the Jungle)
Kira Yukimura (Teen Wolf)
Tiger Claw (TMNT 2012) —I can’t even begin to explain this one
Coraline Jones (Coraline)
Wybie Lovat (Coraline) —gotta love that aro solidarity
Elsa (Frozen)

returning to tumblr because your brain rot has returned is such an odd feeling. like i’m here because i saw les mis and now want to go back to my high school tumblr days, but the last time i was here it was for the magnus archives. the crossover is nonexistent and yet every post switches back and forth and i never know what’s coming next

what’s ur fav little guy?
I couldn't possibly choose between little guys, so have a list (not in any particular order).
1. Sir Damien the Pious. He has anxiety. He has religious trauma. He has issues with his father. Clinging to him like a life preserver.
2. Sir Angelo the Strong. Light of my life. Huphuphup.
3. Gerry Keay. He does arson and was a ghost for a hot second.
Honorable mentions:
1. Juno Steel. He's not so much a little guy as he is a lady who is a PI and also a space criminal.
2. Gavroche. Little guy of all time. Even if he's not my primary little guy at the moment, little guy of all time.

Scar (Fullmetal Alchemist: Brotherhood) "Avenging his family and land against the military that slaughtered them, he doesn't even seem to specifically take joy in it as much as he sees it as his duty after receiving the hand of the deconstruction. But his taregets are still more specific than that, he hunts down the state alchemist and not just the ones that killed his people. He goes after anyone who holds the title since just by being a state alchemist they agreed to be human weapons. So do they not deserve this? For awhile his life is completely devoted to nothing but this mission."
Javert (Les Miserables) "He is obsessed with capturing a prisoner who broke parole nineteen years ago. While the prisoner in question has since evolved and become a better man, Javert cannot accept that people can change and devotes his entire career to chasing this man down and bringing him to justice, even when it seems like it is completely useless, since his adversary only committed petty theft. To Javert, it is less about the actual crime and more about the principle of needing to catch someone he once foolishly let go so he may never do so again."
