Lancelot: Wow, you're so brave! You didn't even hesitate to throw yourself in danger.
Merlin: That's because I have no regard for my own personal safety. You can ask Arthur.
Arthur: I have never been more stressed in my entire life.

Arthur: I heard 1 out of 4 people is gay
Merlin: ...
Merlin: and?
Arthur: well, I mean, I hang out with a couple knights, you, Gwen and Morgana. Which makes me wonder where the 60 straight people are.
Merlin:
Lancelot: *whispering* Merlin, I buried that assassin who tried to kill Arthur, as you told me, where should i put the shovel?
Merlin: not now, Lance, Arthur is having a moment.

I grew up being gaslit and queerbaited by media, now you're trying to tell me that I shouldn't be filtering AO3 by >10,000 words, angst, hurt/comfort, canon divergence, pining??

BBC’s Merlin really missed an opportunity, not with Merthur, with Gwencelot.
It is written in history as the affair of all time, they were written as soulmates, and this show decided just not to let them have it as part of their story?
And I get why, they didn’t want us to think badly of Gwen, but the thing is, we couldn’t have. She was literally established in the first episode as a saint, as was Lancelot, there was literally no way an affair would have made the audience hate them. Or made Arthur hate them.
They could have done this two ways; they could have written the marriage between Arthur and Gwen as an arrangement of friendship, marry a woman of the people who he knew would make an excellent queen, and he could have been fully aware the whole time that she and Lancelot were together and been rooting for them. They could have made jokes about it, “hey you have my wife back by morning or I’ll have your head!”, that sort of thing, it would have been sweet.
But they also could have still written Arthur’s affections for Gwen as sincere, and Gwen and Lancelot’s love for Arthur as sincere, while still making it obvious that Gwen and Lance just belonged together, that they were each others other half (like Merthur), and even though it might have hurt Arthur a little bit, he could have been aware of it and accepting of it because he loved them both so much, and it would have been an amazing arc for his growth as a man.
I know this show dropped the ball on a lot, but this seems to me like the greatest tragedy of it all, at the very least Gwen and Lance had each other, that was what the two of them had when they had nothing else, when Arthur had to be separate from them because he was king and couldn’t be the best friend or husband either of them needed, they had each other, that is the story we all know.
And in this show, it could’ve played harder on the fact that his literal destiny, is Merlin, he can’t belong to Gwen and Lance the way they can belong to each other, because he belongs to Merlin. They had such an opportunity, it’s a shame they wasted it.

Lance: Is this your plan B?
Merlin: Technically, this is plan P.
Gwaine: Plan P? Is there a plan M?
Merlin: Yes, but I marry Arthur in plan M.
Arthur: I like plan M.
Merlin: what?
Arthur: what?

Okay but literally what if Gwen found out about Merlin’s magic in 1x03,, and instead of leaving after 1x05 Lancelot was allowed to stay as a guard but not a full knight,, and then Gwen took over the smithy after her father died,, and Merlin quit the manservant gig to devote himself to his physician apprenticeship,, and they all just ran around committing magical crimes together and being in love,, what then??

does...does merlin give arthur a shirt belonging to lancelot in 2x02? we never see merlin in a shirt of any colour other than red, blue or purple (aside from when he's disguised) and the shirt he gives arthur looks remarkably similar to the one (or ones, considering his first shirt would have been covered in his own blood, unless merlin worked a little magic with the stain) worn by lancelot in 1x05...
[ID: two screenshots from series 2, episode 2 of BBC Merlin. In the first, Arthur has put on a blueish grey shirt given to him by Merlin. It had a relatively high collar and is low-cut, the strings of the shirt loosely threaded through the eyelets. Two lines of stitching run parallel around the opening of the shirt. In the second, Arthur is sitting down in Gwen’s house. The cuffs of the shirt, which looks more grey than blue, end at his wrists and another line of stitching is visible at the base of the shirt's opening, creating a rectangular panel on the front of the shirt. End ID.]
[ID: two screenshots of Lancelot and Merlin from series 1, episode 5. In the first, Lancelot wears a blueish grey shirt with the sleeves rolled up to just below his elbows as he and Merlin watch Arthur training knights. It has a high collar and a rectangular panel of stitching around the low-cut opening. Lancelot wears the same shirt in the second screenshot, where he and Merlin walk through the covered walkways of the castle, but it appears more grey in the light. End ID.]
