a/n: after a lot of procrastination and harassment gentle encouragement from @vhstown i’m finally posting my hcs. :3c (they’ve been sitting here since july)

Despite his tough guy exterior and criminal career, he's actually a massive nerd geek. Like: gundham, comics, posters all over his room.

Until you bring up those interests, he won't mention them. But once you start a conversation about them, he can tell you all the lore front to back or tell you where and when each collectible is from. Just listening to Wiles and nodding along will make his day.

Accepting help from others is not an option. Ever. He's an overly D.I.Y guy since his father's death and it's staying that way.

... unless you're very close to him. Wiles will begrudgingly accept your help and then be adamant on repaying you. No matter how trivial it was, he'll show his gratitude through service.

Wiles has great memory and knows all the lyrics to his favourite songs. Go through his playlist and pick something at random- he'll recite them flawlessly!

A good memory also helps with remembering those flashes of songs playing on your lock screen. Just a split second glance? He's adding it to his playlist, maybe listening to it as he works on his latest gear.

Would be a straight A student if he were there half the time. The only thing keeping his total grades down is attendance, where he’s often absent.

However, if he’s in a group project with you, Wiles will put more effort into it. Getting a ‘C’ or GPA point lower is fine if it means keeping Brooklyn safer. What’s not fine is him being the reason for your lower marks.

Unlike his counterpart from 1610, Wiles’ art is more realistic. He tries to capture the subjects’ essence quickly and minimally, so colours are an afterthought.

Accuracy was his pride in art until it came to you. He’d be so nervous in getting your smile right, scribbling failed attempts over and over again. Wiles even resorted to a pencil sketch.

Following the passing of Jefferson, Wiles has gotten much closer to Rio. That’s a no brainer; he was fourteen— a kid. And Jefferson never got to see his son in that overpriced Visions uniform.

Wiles makes an effort to speak more Spanish. He lets his mamí braid his hair even if it hurts like hell. Those stupid telenovelas aren’t that bad on the second watch.

Once upon a time, Wiles used to be a choir boy (keyword: used). He’d love singing hymns and doing nativities before he could read; all for his mamí and dad to see.

However, the christmas after Jefferson’s passing felt… empty. Wiles quickly lost his passion for choir and now just attends mass with Rio at most.

After years of experience being a choir boy, Wiles has the voice of an angel. Not that you’d know, of course— he intends to take that to the grave. But there’s also a deeper, darker secret… he can’t rap to save his life.

An extremely personal and harrowing Musically comment told him so. Following that attack, twelve year old Wiles abandoned his account with only a black profile picture left behind.

Like any other middle schooler, Wiles had a hype beast phase (he denies it). When Aaron got a Hype shirt for Wiles’ 12th birthday, words couldn’t describe how he almost knocked Aaron down with a hug.

The shirt’s first stain had Wiles distraught and furiously searching ‘remove paint on shirt hacks’ on Youtube. His heart would probably stop if he misplaced a gift from you.

Wiles isn’t the best cook, but he can definitely make himself a good meal. With Rio working night shifts and Uncle Aaron doing… jobs, he has to be self-sufficient.

A secret lil’ side project: he’s trying and failing to replicate Jefferson’s mac ‘n cheese. It wasn’t the best, but it was his. Something’s always off when Wiles makes it and he’s not quite sure what.

Sure, cooking isn’t that hard, but baking is like wizardry to Wiles. AP Chemistry and it’s endless calculations felt way easier than making pan de agua with his mamí.

But, mamí didn’t raise no quitter! On a particularly busy birthday, Wiles pulled together a modest little cake for Rio. She burst into tears seeing the shaky ‘!Feliz Cumple!’ written in too-sweet icing.

Calling Earth-42 a wreck is a massive understatement. Shit’s like Gotham, only very real and very deadly. Just breathing in that damn city air makes Wiles’ skin crawl.

Luckily, he’s got an outlet: boxing. A fun hobby he picked up from Uncle Aaron became his release. Wiles might never be in the ring, but Brooklyn’s more than enough.

Hi!! This might be a little specific but I’m a second year student mental health nurse and was wondering if there are any fics that come to mind that has John (or Sherlock) having contact with mental health services such as community mental health teams or mental health wards. Or anything that focuses on John (or Sherlocks) mental health as his PTSD is often overlooked as not being real like it was in the series.

I know this might be too specific but I’ll take anything I can get and thought you’d be the only person that could possibly help as I couldn’t find anything myself that focuses on John and his trauma other than -

the bravery of the soldier by Baker Street girl and an innocent man by Fangs_fawn which I love but have read too many times (and still would read again).

Dragon Ball Super manga Ch.42-46

The 2023 Dragon Ball Apocrypha Liveblog continues!  This month, we look at the Dragon Ball Super manga as it continues beyond the anime series.  The Tournament of Power is over, and the Broly movie is behind us, so with no other material to adapt, the manga begins a totally new arc.  Is it any good?  Let’s find out.

All right, so the manga  version of the Tournament of Power ended in Chapter 42, but there was still some room left in the chapter, so Toyotaro just started in on the Moro Saga with the space that was left.  Not much gets done here.  Goku meets Vegeta for a training session in the Gravity Room, when Bulma calls them to tell them that Majin Buu is being kidnapped by aliens.  Turns out, they’re Galactic Patrolmen, and when Goku tries to stop them...

... their leader, Merus, defeats Goku with surprising ease.  Vegeta doesn’t do much better, and Merus decides to bring them along so he can explain the situation when they wake up. 

Turns out, Merus doesn’t need Majin Buu at all, but rather, he’s counting on the Grand Supreme Kai, whom Buu absorbed five million years ago to obtain his chubby, innocent form. 

Let’s turn back the clock to ten million years ago, when the Grand Supreme Kai and the South Supreme Kai were defending the universe from some other existential threat.  According to Merus, this was a powerful magic-user named Moro, who could absorb power from entire planets.  To win, the Grand Supreme Kai used a secret technique of his own invention to seal Moro’s magic powers at the cost of a great deal of his own.  The Galactic Patrol then incarcerated the defeated Moro, and though he was sentenced to death, no one could find a way to kill him, so they just imprisoned him indefinitely. 

But now Moro has escaped, and Merus thinks that only the Grand Supreme Kai can stop him, which means they need to get Buu to cough him up.  Now, I had heard about all this back when this story was being published, but it never made much sense to me that the Galactic Patrol should be so familiar with the Kaioshin.  I mean, King Kai once said that he had never had the honor of seeing the Kaioshin before Shin came to Earth to meet Goku.  But in the flashback, we find Galactic Patrollers observing the Kaioshin’s battle with Moro, so apparently they had some sort of relationship with the gods, and the GP has somehow existed for literal millions of years.  That sounds a little weird, but if you’re willing to buy this, then it isn’t hard to swallow that they were also involved in the Buu crisis 5 million years ago, and they were informed about the Grand Supreme Kai getting absorbed. 

But getting the Grand Kaioshin out of Buu will have to wait, because Buu’s still asleep from before the Tournament of Power started, and no one knows how to awaken him.  In the meantime, Merus deputizes Goku and Vegeta.  For the duration of the Moro Crisis, they’re part of the Galactic Patrol.  Goku tries to shake hands with the Galactic King again, and he fondles the king’s pee-pee again.  Well, why does the king keep holding up that appendage if he doesn’t want Goku to touch it? I don’t think Goku’s reaching down and grabbing that one by chance.

This is all presented as a chance to run through all the GP’s nonsense. They’re given rules about not using their Patroller status to flirt with girls or some nonsense, and Jaco offers them battle vests like his own, but the boys don’t want them, so they have to have the GP logo written on their clothes instead, because the regulations require the logo, but not the uniform.  Jaco wants to show them poses, and... you know, the Jaco manga was really, really good, and I’m glad I read it, because everything they’ve done with Jaco in Dragon Ball Super has just been this really weak, watered down version of the original presentation of the character. Without Professor Omori to ground any of this, it’s just another silly alien who only cares about goofy rules and silly poses. 

Anyway, Merus heads out to assist with a case, and Vegeta insists on joining him, because he wants to understand how Merus defeated him so easily on Earth.  So Goku tags along with Vegeta, and Jaco tags along with all of them, because he’s assigned to Earth, which means he has to keep an eye on Goku and Vegeta. 

Merus’s deal is that he’s this super-competent officer, the kind of guy Jaco only pretends to be.  He foils a space-train robbery, and it looks like Goku helped, but Vegeta realizes that Merus could have done the job even faster than he made it seem. 

Merus gets a report of Moro’s ship heading for an uninhabited region of space, but Goku realizes that he’s heading for New Namek, which not even the Galactic Patrol know about.  But Moro does know, because he heard about the Namekians and their Dragon Balls from a fellow prisoner, a dude named Cranberry who used to work for Frieza.

Goku tries to sense Moro’s energy, and he’s disturbed by the way it feels.  Also, he can tell that Moro could sense Goku sensing him, which is creepy. 

Since the GP can’t reach New Namek before Moro, Goku and Vegeta decided to teleport ahead and intercept him.  This turns out to be a bad move.

Vegeta does manage to save a Namekian child before Moro can consume his life force, but the battle doesn’t go well.

Vegeta seems to do okay, until Moro unleashes some of his restored power, which allows him to manipulate the energy of the planet itself against Vegeta.  Vegeta feigns defeat in order to get Moro to talk, but all he really finds out is that Moro wants to use the Dragon Balls to recover his full power, which isn’t exactly a shock. 

From there, Vegeta seems to have things well in hand by fighting Moro at Super Saiyan Blue, except Moro’s been playing him from the start.  He’s been absorbing power from the planet and everyone on it this whole time, including Goku and Vegeta. 

Oh, hey, let’s check in on Beerus.  Turns out he doesn’t give a shit about any of this, because the battle is happening on New Namek, and the Namekians only drink water, so there’s no tasty food at stake. 

So Moro drains Goku and Vegeta and leaves them for dead so he can track down all the Dragon Balls.  Meanwhile, Bulma calls Jaco to find out what happened to the boys.  Look at Mr. Satan and Tights, playin’ with Bulla.  That’s cute.

But Goku and Vegeta didn’t die.  The Namekians found them and healed them.  Unfortunately, their kid healer isn’t as efficient as Dende, so they’ve been out for three whole days.  During that time, Moro has... only found three of the Dragon Balls.  Uh... Frieza had already tracked four of them down in his first appearance. I mean, which is it?  Moro’s supposed to be insanely powerful, but it’s taking him a long time to collect the Dragon Balls. 

I mean, it’s not like the Namekians can do anything to slow him down.  They fuse a number of their best warriors into a single, powerful savior, and Moro kills him without even looking.  So why has it taken three days for him to get this far?  It can’t be because the Namekians are good at hiding, since Moro seems to have the same ki-sensing powers as everyone else in this franchise. 

I gotta say, I’m not very impressed with what I’m seeing here.  Moro just feels like a bunch of concepts from classic DBZ mashed together into some kind of DBZ-loaf.  His hunt for the Namekian Dragon Balls is so derivative that I’m not even going to bother explaining it.  Moro absorbs energy like Android 19 and Cell.  Moro also has a backstory very much like Majin Buu’s.  The Kaioshin defeating him, the being sealed away for millions of years, it’s all there.

I mean, this story acts like Moro is this next-level threat, so having him do all the same gimcracks as past villains seems like a waste.  And the power-scaling doesn’t really add up either.  He’s super-duper strong, fine, but apparently he was even stronger in the distant past, and the only one who could defeat him was the Grand Supreme Kai, who jobbed out to Majin Buu, who’s been jobbed out to pretty much every major character in Dragon Ball Super at this point.  I think the idea here is that the Grand Supreme Kai used to be a lot more powerful way back when, and it was because of Moro that the Grand Supreme Kai was so helpless against Majin Buu.  But... that feels kind of cheap to me. 

Well, we’ve still got a ways to go.  Maybe this will get better.

Cricketheart is my favorite dead character because she like so perfectly fits that “thinks she’s invincible; gets killed by the thing she thought she controlled.” but her death isn’t the only thing about her! she was also a very supportive and defensive sister, who wanted to protect but not coddle Feathercloud at all costs. she was also not that code-orientated, and had no qualms breaking the code for funsies. she lacked severe judgement and was very interested in BloodClan/twolegplace life (though she did critique the harsh parenting skills of Gremlin’s parents and the sickly, unhealthy conditions cats were in).

though in life she was always confident and endlessly optimistic, in death, she’s more subdued, and she puts on a front of optimism and acceptance, but underneath that...?

her romantic/sexual orientations are “i dont know” because she never thought about it/never explored. she’s not highly romantically inclined or anything, but....

Close your eyes, count to ten// ch. 42 of 42

... as in, the last one. The final chapter. I actually finished Close your eyes! I always said I would never abandon this story, and that I would give Lu her happy ending, but with how long I took to update, I get that it was hard to believe at times 😅 But here we are!

When I started this in August 2020, I did definitely not anticipate what it would turn into. I thought I'd write my first fanfic, maybe 10 chapters or so, about Lu and Val's tragic love story. It ended up being 42 chapters, 190,652 words, with nine POVs and 1,011 days from when I posted the first chapter to today.

The final chapter takes place at Nadia and Guzman's wedding. As @time-is-a-loaded-gun pointed out, that makes for a nice bookend ending. If you remember, in the first chapter Nadia and Guzman take a high, distraught Lu back to their house to take care of her. That was a flashforward, the plot of the story started about half a year before this. That means that roughly two years passed for the characters, one-and-a-half years from that awful night for Lu to the wedding where the story ends. Lu has grown so much in that time, and so have I in the two years and nine months I spent writing this.

THANK YOU for being on this journey with me. I know interaction has dropped off, but if you have followed along, read and commented- I appreciate it so much. Especially to my fellow Lu-Valerio shippers. I know the change was rough, but they are still very important in each other's lives.

I would love to hear your thoughts on how it all ended. And I realize this is a wordy post - I am just really emotional right now.

When Rosalía's cover of "All I want" started playing, Rebe almost dropped her glass. She frantically looked around for Lu – who appeared by her side and pulled her to the center of the dance floor. With her arms on Lu's shoulders and Lu's arms around her waist, the rest of the party faded away.

Rebe leaned forward so her mouth was by Lu's ear. "I was so impressed with you that night. How you'd dragged me to that club, up the stairs, and all while managing to keep it a secret we'd be seeing fucking Rosalía…"

Lu raised her eyebrows. "I'm an impressive girl."

Her tone had been joking, but Rebe didn't laugh. She looked into Lu's eyes, counted the little flecks of gold that she had come to memorize and ran her fingers along the nape of Lu's neck. She didn't have to put any pressure to get Lu to take a step closer to her.

When their lips touched, Rebe's eyes fluttered shut. She was back on that rooftop terrace, under the stars, Lu's body pressed against hers in the crowd and Rosalía's voice in her ear. Reading and Interpretations

Regarding syntax and style in Emma, Linda Bree notes that “Austen often uses short sentences, or quasi-sentence statements split by semicolons or dashes, to move the story swiftly forward. When it becomes expedient for Harriet to visit John and Isabella in London, ‘Harriet was to go; she was invited for at least a fortnight; she was to be conveyed in Mr. Woodhouse’s carriage.—It was all arranged, it was all completed, and Harriet was safe in Brunswick Square’” (p. 99).

Laurie Kaplan argues that the “recurring reference to Brunswick Square” in Emma (p. 236) forms the “centerpiece” of a pattern linking the seemingly “disparate themes” of “selfishness and generosity,” specifically as they pertain to children:

Introduced in the first chapter of Emma, Brunswick Square—that very superior part of London—features prominently at the end of the novel. Even as Mrs.Weston tries to rationalize Frank’s secretive behavior, Emma finds her own thoughts turning to Mr. Knightley—wherever he is, either at Donwell Abbey or at Brunswick Square. Mr. Knightley’s expeditious return to Highbury from Brunswick Square, after he has heard about Frank and Jane’s secret engagement, signals the beginning of the novel’s dénouement. In the proposal scene in the garden at Hartfield, when Emma thinks Mr. Knightley is “within a half sentence” of proclaiming his love for Harriet, she tries to divert him: “she would speak of something totally different—the children in Brunswick Square” [vol. 3, ch. 16; p. 296]. Of course we assume that she is referring to the young Knightleys, but the ambiguity of this reference is in keeping with Austen’s subtle reticulation of the novel’s themes. After Emma agrees to marry Mr. Knightley, she conjures up another plan, this time to remove Harriet from Highbury to Brunswick Square, where Harriet’s spirits might benefit “by novelty and variety, by the streets, the shops, and the children” [vol. 3, ch. 14 [50]; p. 285]. The excuse for Harriet to go to Isabella’s home in London was “a tooth amiss,” but the placement of the “natural” daughter within a stone’s throw of the Foundling Hospital [established in 1742 for the care of London’s unwanted, illegitimate, or orphaned babies] rounds off the subtext linking children, orphans, illegitimacy, and care. (p. 245)

Kaplan further argues that the “direct reference to (Princess Caroline of) Brunswick,” the “despised and spurned” wife of the Prince Regent who gave the Square its name, alongside the references to illegitimacy and neglect, “create a complex subtext critiquing the state of the nation” and the notoriously profligate Prince (p. 238).

Your Majesty, Please Spare me this Time!

My review. This is not a quick read to pass the time. It involves human nature and human psychology to understand. There is fantastic worldbuilding. This is a a romantic fantasy drama. Plot and Romance development go hand in hand. Season 1 (Ch 1-41) and Season 2 (42 - ) set up the story for the rest of the series. There are some cute moments between the main leads, but their feelings develop slowly but surely. Because of their situations, they consider each other enemies. They shouldn't fall in love. But they do. The ultimate ending for this series is “Rupert and Lariette obtain happiness”. Both of our leads have complicated, traumatic pasts. Both are distrustful of the other and are enemies at first. But over time, they fall in love with each other naturally, not by misunderstandings or for shallow reasons, but rather because they fall in love with each other’s “true self”, despite the masks they wear in public and the secrets they desperately hide. Both Rupert and Lariette are flawed humans, and make mistakes and suffer the consequences. In this series, some allies turn into enemies, and some enemies turn into allies. You don’t know until the last moment. In this world, Lariette is betrayed many times, and her faith in what she thought was true is tested. Lariette is a very sweet, lovely character who radiates warmth and comfort. She hides her trauma and hatred from the past deep in her heart, as she suffers greatly when those memories surface. Rupert is rough around the edges. He is fundamentally a kind, gentle person who acts very rude. His first meeting with Lariette was very bad, and he had threatened her many times at the start, because he had 0 sense. His goal is to survive and become Emperor, and he learns what it means to be a “human” with Lariette’s influence. When reading this series, keep an open mind. There is no “filler”. Past chapters will be referenced in future ones. Characters you’ve met once will appear again. Memories of the past influence the decisions of the future. Both RupeLali will grow and change over time - the people they are at the start of S1 is not the same as in the end of S2. As they grow older and mature together, they grow so close, yet they remain so far from each other. During their tender moments together, you just want them to succeed and be happy! But in order to reach their happiness, they have a long journey ahead. Both of them can’t be together as a couple, until their past traumas are addressed. They have to have both their own individual willpower to move on and accept the future, and the willingness to share, support, and completely accept the other for this to work. Otherwise, they can never be together. The end of Season 2 is just the beginning. This series explores human nature, what it means to be loved, to trust and believe in others, and for one to grow and make their own decisions and choose their own destiny. I hope readers will give this series a chance.

I am absolutely terrible when it comes to writing anything about my own WIPs on this blog despite making a specific writing side blog for this purpose. So I thought I'd share a list of some of my favourite quotes from Spes Super Sydera--out of context, of course! Spes Super Sydera is my sci-fi WIP centring on the main character, Eloise, and her struggle to unravel what exactly happened to her dad after he went missing on a deep-space mission about a year before the book starts. It involves heists, kidnapping, potential aliens, and adventures on spaceships.

Here beginth part one of the quotes:

(They were all going to go here but I started reading the earlier chapters and discovering more and more bits that I enjoyed so I'm splitting it up. I've currently got 42 chapters and counting. Don't know how that happened!)

Ch. 5: “Don’t look at me like that. I haven’t done anything illegal—personally, anyway."

Ch. 6: “I vote for breaking the door down.” Charlie bounces on the balls of her feet and rubs her hands together far too gleefully for Eloise’s tastes. “I’ve always wanted to have a go with an axe.”

Ch. 7: Not that she expects to find many vases down here. It’s not the sort of thing that a space exploration company tends to keep in their important archives that are off-limits to most people. Unless it’s a vase from space, perhaps. An alien vase would be worth keeping.

Ch. 7: “I’m delegating like any good leader does. Hop to it, peasant.”

Ch. 10: Eloise gives up on thinking and climbs onto her bed so she can scream into the pillows. It’s cathartic.

Ch. 12: With a sigh, Eloise kicks her heels against the desk drawers from her position atop the desk. “Am I supposed to do all the talking now? I’m not sure I like the sound of my own voice enough for that sort of commitment.”

“I’m thinking,” Rebecca snarls, catching one of Eloise’s feet in an iron grip. “Something that would be easier if you could sit still. We’re not children anymore.”

“Don’t I know it. I never had to deal with international security secrets or conspiracies when I was a kid. It was usually just low-level bureaucratic bribery and incompetency.”

“My, aren’t you hilarious.”

“One of us has to be.”

Ch. 16: Charlie kicks one of her feet up to bop Eloise on the nose and she scowls, batting the offending foot away before the smell of sweaty feet overwhelms her. “Give over, Eloise. My feet smell of daises and lavender if they smell of anything at all because I actually remember to shower regularly, unlike some people.” She glances around the circle and everyone stares right back, utterly unbothered by her accusations.

Ch. 18: "For someone who’s supposed to be our leader, you don’t seem to be paying much attention,” Dom drawls, reaching around the back of Charlie’s chair he can jab Eloise’s shoulder—hard.

Rebecca scowls. “I contest that. Eloise is not our leader.”

“Seconded.” Eloise sticks her hand in the air and reaches for her coffee mug. Someone pushes it out of the way. “Hey! Seriously, I don’t want to be in charge of you lot. I can barely stay in charge of myself.”

Ch. 18: Benedict folds his arms across his chest and leans back in his chair, managing to look remarkedly intimidating for a short and rather gangly man wearing a fluffy dressing gown and dog-shaped slippers. It’s a skill Eloise would pay to learn.

Ch. 19: Not, of course, that Eloise is actively planning to try. But if the opportunity presents itself? Well, who is she to stand in the way of the universe?

Ch. 20: A sudden crackle in Eloise’s ear makes her jump. She almost claps her hand over the earpiece, barely managing to turn the gesture into smoothing other a non-existent errant strand of hair.

“Are we going for full-on lies now, Eloise? Careful it doesn’t come back to bite you on the ass,” Rebecca says in a sing-song voice, sounding strangely chirpy. It’s disconcerting.

“Oh, we’re being a proper peanut gallery then, are we?” That’s Charlie and her words are fainter, as though she’s further away from the microphone.

Muffled rustling fills Eloise’s ear. “No. We’re here to listen. And provide useful comments.”

“Useful. As if anyone has ever had any of those.” A burst of bright laughter fills Eloise’s ear after Benedict’s grumbly words and she winces again, cringing at the too-loud noise.

Ch. 22: “The hell is wrong with you? Not everything requires a kidnapping.” Charlie shrugs as Dom cards both hands through his hair, restyling his artfully tousled curls into something resembling a particularly unkempt bird nest.

Well that whole wet dream not withstanding, I had apparently not kept my eye on the ball. He was so nice, so genuine, that he actually slowed down production. He stopped and talked to everyone, especially below the line. Conscious of the recent union vote, and apparently aware of the working conditions, he made sure that everybody got to eat, and had his driver shuttle people back to base.

It was a mystery to me as to WHY he was still single. It couldn't be just because he was kinky. Or because he was.....*koff* gifted....nudge nudge, wink wink....so I watched. And took notes. It seemed as though every female staffer he encountered was short circuited. They were just so blown away by his ...presence. And he made everyone he talked to feel like they were the only person on the planet. Ok, so. Intensity. She, whoever she was, had to be able to withstand that, and ideally, match it. I'd settle for not withering.

While he was working, sparring or training, I took advantage of being an avant garde hanger on, and using my training I observed. Took notes. The obsequious ones, no. He'd tire of that. The ones with skills, that was better. They could keep up with his work schedule, work on different crews, for upcoming productions. Stachelski's Highlander.... That was going to be a testosterone fest, and only certain kinds of women could do a few months of that, and not give in to the butch side. I crack myself up.

No stratospherically high femmes. Way too much maintenance. Louboutins and fight scenes. Ummm...no. And I REALLY wanted someone a little nerdy.

I started hosting Cards Against Humanity games in my trailer during down times. I made sure I had food, not star food, but not shit craft services wouldn't feed the animals ....midline, but hearty. And we played. No sense of humor? Out. Easily offended? Didn't get invited. Had an annoying laugh? Questionable. I made more notes, added to my top secret white board.

It wasn't like I could invite HIM to the cards against humanity games. He couldn’t be seen playing. It wouldn’t do. All these years in the industry and aside from that horrid interview, no dirt on him whatsoever. I mean I *knew* he ran around naked when he was rooming with those friends in his early days in Los Angeles, but thankfully, no social media existed and if there were pictures, they were a well treasured secret. And probably in someone’s spank bank, no doubt.

I corralled him and we worked on his bullshit detector. Turns out, he didn’t have one, so I installed one. I explained that his lack of bullshit detection caused some issues in the past.

“ Look, love, I KNOW how much you want a wife and kids, and that you feel the odd man out as all your brothers are married and have kids. But your biological clock and your damned sense of honor will be your undoing.”

He looked at me, quizzically.

“ You don’t get it do you?”

He shrugged.

“ ok, lets break this down…” I flipped the white board and started writing. ..” that stalker who engineered a relationship by hanging out at your gym…” He cringed.

“ And it never occurred to you HOW she got to you? It didn’t seem * too good to be true*?”

His blue eyes got wide when it started to sink in. “ You think she laid out the bait and I fell for it?”

“ uh, Yes. In a word, hook line and sinker”

“That’s three words, maybe more.”

“ Listen here smart ass…… I’m trying to help you. And that’s not the only time. The trump nazi. Did you KNOW she was bat shit crazy when you were picking out puppies together? Or did you lose sight of everything because you could really go to town and not hold back? Were You thinking with your dick the whole time? “ He sank down in the chair, trying to make himself smaller. I walked over and put my hand on his cheek. “ Love, I am not going to apologize for being blunt. You knew what I was when you met me. In fact that’s part of what you hired me for, my charm.” He smiled and I swear the whole world lit up like it was Christmas. Would I never have any immunity to this man?

“ Hero, you can have one night stands, you know. Go find some willing broad and fuck the daylights out of her. But NEVER where you live, and take their number, never give them yours. How did you get to this point in your career and never learn that? “ I already knew the answer. His mother raised him not to treat women that way, but the problem was their mothers didn’t raise them the same way.

“ At least you got custody of Kal…. not that he wouldn’t have walked all over her..You cannot assume that everyone is as honorable as you are, or that they have motives that aren’t sinister. I feel like such a jerk having to teach you this. In my perfect world you would never have to learn this, but honey, you keep shooting yourself in the foot and I cannot stand to see you unhappy”

He looked at me and smiled. “ You could just stay…..” “ Darling boy, I can’t and you know that. I will never be able to give you what you need, and you’d try so hard not to hate me for denying you what you ache for… I can’t. We’ve been over this.”

I took a deep breath and went back to the other side of the white board.

“ If you could find a way to have a conversation with these three women in the next week, that would be super.”

You've mentioned some fics recently but haven't made a fic rec list in a long time. Could you give us one... please?

Hey! I sure can! Though I gotta warn you. I’ve mostly been reading daredevil fics recently, but I’m sure I can find some Twilight fics I’ve read since reccing last if that’s why you’re here—I also have some Twilight fics that are WIPS that I’m reading when they’re updated of course.

If anyone is interested in any HMC fics I can rec those in the future, but I don’t have time to go looking for those today.

And up first are two that blew me away most recently.

What They Wouldn’t Do by Ashevillain

(Matt’s pretty horrible in the beginning, a little OOC in my opinion but it’s important to the growth of their characters so just stick with it and I promise they get better. Lol)

(I was pretty hesitant to start this one, since insert/reader fics aren’t usually my cup of tea but I promise it’s worth it. Reader has an amazing backstory and power. There is a hide and seek scene that alone makes this fic worth reading. It was equally exciting and hot. LOL)

The more I think about Dark Disciple, the more I find something odd.

I keep referring to it as a ‘favourable experience’, and there is no question the writing is what made me fall totally head over heels about quintress, but I also just, can’t?

I mean, yes. It’s very passionate, dramatic, scenes and gestures I can only dream of. But I also, don’t really see it in that ’omg they totally belong together here are my sixty headcanons of them’ sense?

I am very involved in the pairing, but also don’t really, actively ‘ship’ it — like the way it was an open book with Rhayme or Latts Razzi (since it’s the same author that indoctrinated me to Captain Rhayme). I could imagine them being happily ever after and silly shenanigans and slow-burn. But the concept of a quintress fairytale ending is so wild. I can only ask how much it is tainted with my personal view on relationships.

I know the plot leaves little room for “the future” and fed us well on all tropes possible. But, it just never occurred to me to put them in any other clichés or invent a missing scene.

Winding up, I don’t think their relationship is "weak", but it’s very motivated by circumstances and once you take that out of them, you are a little bit lost. For example even during the illicit affairs month, I… can’t really propose one date that does not seem tonally insensitive. (I can think of them being cloak dorks and Vos bringing her to ice-cream, that’s it, after a long hard moment) Really, all I possibly want is that sweet, sweet angst and canon is already there so I have no complaint.

It’s just… I don’t really get why it has to be the two of them that fall for each other. I understand why they did, and I believe it— Perhaps it’s much more a physical attraction thing that I don’t really have personal experience with.

I don’t know if quintress classify as slow-burn because 10 chapters still seem a little quick in the grand scheme of things. (aside: I’m quite disappointed Ventress wasn’t doing much in the last quarter of the book.) My point is, they do feel a little bit puppet to tropes, and while it’s deliciously written, there’s not much potential outside of canon. And that lack of inspiration makes me grimace a little.

I’ve scrolled through the dd tag and let the book sank a little. I am better articulated to talk about the sexist criticism now.

It’s a romance story, and when I judge it by that (lower) standard, it ticks the boxes. However, it might be a weakness as well, due to the projectability of the heroes. And yes, the whole assassination is dumb. Yet, tcw has been consistently this dumb at us. The last two times when she’s more rooted in the dark she failed, sent Savage and failed, so she’s gonna do it again with Vos… after she put down her desire for revenge. right. and surprise! Our “assassination” plan is to find Dooku and duel him directly. right…

I’ve read a review that says the romance takes away from the plot. However, the romance IS the plot. The book IS supposed to revolve around the two of them. I do agree them becoming begrudging allies then partners is a more unique approach, more rewarding as foils as well. but I guess a romance is easier for the conventional to process ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

With the “Ventress lose agency in falling for Vos”. Now, I can’t dictate how each of us buy into their physical attraction and chemistry (or lack thereof), and there’s no denial that a conscious human being is making that choice for the fictional character, I think the stance on this topic varied person to person from the above two factors, which are very different starting points.

I kept Katie Lucas’s foreword vividly in mind while reading. She said this is a story about people seizing chances to rebuild. That there’s always a choice. Cliché as it is, I believe ~the power of love~. I believe there exists someone you’re willing to sacrifice everything for, to overlook everything for, to forgive - to love them, warts and all. So, yes whether you think Ventress loses her agency to the romance, or if that’s a conscious choice on her behalf, is swayed heavily by how much you buy that they are the one.

Yesterday I’ve been thinking a bit more about this. I do love this ship, I just don’t believe they’d be two people who find each other again and again in every life time, in every universe. That’s why, as magnificent as fireworks, it also won’t last.

To explore this, it’s not entire impossible for quintress to separate peacefully after this incident, but would that cheapen the build before? The entire motivation of dark!Quinlan hinges on his vision of their future. And say, Ventress did saved him and survived. How would he balance being a Jedi and his feelings - that’s publicly exposed to the Council? (sidenote: i really don’t like Ch. 27 where a bunch of old men are questioning their love life, but uhhh yes, I’m a sensible person!) For now, I’m seeing another Obi-Satine situation. And honestly how bad that an outcome is. It’s not like Ventress died for her war crimes! The show gave her a full pardon! So Idk man. Why can’t she leave him because she loves him and she exiled herself and they never see each other again WHY NOT FILONI WHY NOT.

Now I’m lamenting more what could’ve been with the two arcs. In Filoni’s original sketch, Aayla and Maul were involved. Man, that could’ve been the dream.

Part 2: [26th April, 15:15]

It has been… a month, since I finished Dark Disciple and I feel like it’s time to conclude all the thinking this book has made me do.

On the wider reflection about attachment and the Jedi Order, I still have to do more reading on it from other sources to form a concrete opinion. This theme won’t be touched on in this post yet, but I cannot shake how intriguing it is to compare “falling” in love to falling to the dark side. The temptation, and the submission to their emotions, the irrationality, the newfound curiosity, it all incites. Very curiously, it was Anakin Skywalker who commented that one is “blinded by love”

Okay, so what I’ve been scratching my head off the past two weeks is how I look at the romance between Asajj Ventress and Quinlan Vos. How would I define it?

Now this is as much as an exploration of how I view romantic relationships. Well, I’ve decided it wasn’t “love”, it was an “affair”. It was an affair because it’s a rush of passion, it’s a secret, it won’t last. Before I chop my own head off for bluntness, I mean it in, of course they are hopelessly in love with each other, that’s the exact premise of why it moved me so. But it wasn’t a complete relationship, wasn’t a healthy, sustainable one by any objective standards. Then, that’s the exact contradiction. Oh to throw caution in the wind with you, or to build a future with you?

Both are things I want a lot, and the ideal is of course one after the other. What quintress had (in the end) is definitely not something I’d want for myself, but it’s so fantastical, it’s alluring, just like the concept of falling in love - opening up yourself and trusting another person, is - it’s risky. That’s why it’s a sweet, sweet drug.

I’ve been so angry at all the red flags in this relationship. Reading this book, getting into both of their shoes, yelling NO like their best friends. But ultimately, what they had is unique to them and I can’t influence it in any way. Re-reading, I find myself holding myself back at all the places I was furious about going ‘You are smarter than this!’. Because it’s a tragedy, and the beautiful (I guess) thing is they chose each other.

The other day something on the dash inspired me to really think about ship dynamics. I, unashamedly admit, I’m VERY into Obi/Quin/Ventress in any and all combinations. *cough* I will not explain further.

I do accept the premise and I did discover they share quite a bunch of traits, but it confused me a while what made them cross the boundary, and it was, physical attraction (that the book was selling so hard I was blushing hot). I love them both a lot, and I would like to date them both, and I can see myself in either of them. Again comes the contradiction, is it a good thing to have characters so easily projectable, or do I want to see myself in more complex characters like them?

I probably lost quite a few cars stalling this train of thought. And I've been a canon apologist since forever. This book brought me a lot of emotional upheavals and a lot of food for thought. It brought me down to reflect on my romantic worldview and sexuality because I have nothing better to do. It totally challenged me as a writer and it’s just a really good novel by its right, regardless of the absurdity that is The Clone Wars. It’s a lot of firsts for me. And I really should find something better to do.

I must address that I got spoiled of the ending and the first and second half of the book probably went through some big changes.

If I cried for this book, it’s score would be even higher. And I’ve been so obsessed with discussing the relationship, without shedding light on the characterization, which is definitely an unfortunate side effect. Then it occurs that quite possibly the second half (26-42) deviated even further from the script than the first? It doesn’t have concept art or blocking, plus possibly (heavily) edited to omit correlation to other arcs. My major complaint for the second half is Ventress doesn’t do much and we know NOTHING about Vos, even though he is given screen time in the book. my, I just wish Ventress punch him harder and drag his idiotic mess back to the light sooner.

And to criticism about it being their ‘toxic’ relationship being portrayed as ‘true love’, well, it really depends on how thoughtful the reader is, right? I think if the reader is able to notice all these red flags and gave their own interpretation of the relationship and its outcome, it’d’ve been an educating experience. There’s what for the reader and what for the characters. They don’t know this ‘love’ is destroying them, and what kind of message is it sending? What ‘love’ depicted in the book is true then? I have my answers, and I hope every reader comes to their own as well.
