I've just discovered that on top of everything else, applying for refugee status in France on homophobia grounds is very hard, because you have to prove you're queer, which is of course very difficult if you're single. So there are apparently refugee support groups who on top of helping with lodging and paperwork they also take queer asylum-seekers out to queer bars and activities in order to give them witnesses of them being queer.

I did a great big book unhaul a couple of months ago and even then I knew I wanted another pass after some time to think. My queer lit shelf was my focus today. None of these books spark the urge to reread them. Changing tastes and far easier access to queer books have given me a massive tbr to acquire that I frankly need to make room for. but... At one point or another these books were incredibly important to my baby queer self, and while it's time to let them go to someone else they can help I find it difficult. Nope, I'm not crying. Not at all... 😭

A good day..

I had the joy and privilege to attend a Traditional Wool Crafting Workshop with Quw'utsun' Elder May Sam.

May is a Salish Knitter by birthright; as a child she supported the family's efforts to produce "Cowichan Knit" sweaters. May is over 70 and a survivor of the Duncan Indian Day School. She Still processes wool, spins and knits her family's traditional designs into hats and headbands, sweaters and pouches. She also teaches and offers workshops throughout island communities. She is an Esteemed Elder in Residence at UVic, and a lovely warm person. I first met her at the First People's House when I attended Uni.

Today we made pompoms! I'll have a few new ones to go with the one May taught me to make over 10 years ago. (It's worn down!)

for me personally though.. the BEST part of this experience:

this Indigenous great-grandmother looked at me (spinning on a drop-spindle) and she spoke to me, and about me, and described what I was doing to the group.. and NEVER ONCE mis-gendered me.

She clocked that I'm non-binary and never once used a gendered pronoun! Astonishing! this has never happened to me before. I feel so seen and respected. Gender Euphoria!

I love my husband but he is so very Straight (tm) sometimes.

I'm in the middle of reading The Picture of Dorian Gray by Oscar Wilde. I knew previously that it is considered Very Gay and was even used as evidence in Wilde's sodomy trial, but I had no idea how blatant it was until I read it.

I sent my husband a few passages and said something to the effect of "Oohhh yeah I see it now" and his response was "?? I don't get it."

Love & Revolution

So a while ago I watched a new Spanish movie called "Te estoy amando locamente" (Love & Revolution, in English), and if you have a minute, I'd recommend you do too!

It's set in the late 70s in Spain, where a gay teenage boy discovers the drag scene while trying to become an artist and gets arrested in the process; and his mom's journey while his friends start a political campaign to get him released.

Reasons to go see it:

It's a queer story about queer history that's not set in the US. Instead, it tells the story of the fight against the Law on Social Danger (a law from the Spanish fascist dictatorship against "antisocial behaviour"... that of course included homosexuals) instead. It's cool to learn about other fights, right? Also, I've done my fair amount of research about it since, and it looks like it's very historically accurate.

Being queer doesn't mean the main character has to lose his own cultural identity. To use a US example a friend gave me, the US version of the main storyline of this would be making a movie about a teenager in Nashville that gets introduced line dancing with his mom and then he stumbles on a drag queen who sings Dolly Parton and Shania Twain and decides that's the type of country he wants to make. Also, look at this cutie praticing in his living room.

The cast of this movie is great. They all do a great job, they are emotional and funny and light. But also the casting is great, especially the queer characters. A butch that's actually a butch, and is also Roma? Three fifths of them being trans people IRL and either trans or ambiguous in the movie? A fat girl who is active and political and gets laid? Sign me the fuck up.

This might be a perk just for me, but even though the main character is a teenager, there's no romance subplot and it's not a coming out story. Finally some variety!!!

In any case, it's a good movie. Go watch it. It has laughs, it has tears, it has music, and it has so much fucking found family.
