We build bases on the moon. Colonize the planets of the gas giants, terraform Mars and Venus, build orbital habitats around everything with enough gravity to hold it up. We invent FTL, and send ships named after dreams to every star we have cataloged. We have rulebooks and plans and endless ideas of what we do when finally we meet another spacefairing race, but it never happens. We don't hail any vulcan cruisers above the skies of Epsilon Eridani and get in no laser battles with a star destroyer in the scarlet light of Wolf 359. No one responds to our endless messages sent to the heavens.
Life? We find that everywhere. If a rock is big enough to hold onto enough atmosphere, we find something growing there. Maybe just a moss or some protokarotic slime, but there'll be something growing there. We spend centuries cataloging the flora and fauna (and everything in between) of a million stars, and never meet anyone who can say hello back.
Not yet at least. In the unending sunset of the Mu Herculis system there's the Peterson's Mermaids who are just developing language and starting on metallurgy. The vampires of Fomalhaut b have begun to write down numbers, and we expect them to have a full language sometime within the next hundred thousand years. There's no animal life on Gliese 499 d, but we have reason to suspect the clonal organism inhabiting most of the northern forest is verging on sapience. And we don't even have time to get into the theory that 55 Cancri B (the red dwarf orbiting the star Copernicus) is a living being in it's own right.
There's plenty of life to study. Lots to learn. But we never meet anyone we can greet in friendship, and there's no star gods out here in the black. We've looked everywhere.
Humanity takes decades to come to terms with the reality of the situation. But we do, of course. We can't give up now.
We searched endlessly for the ancient aliens with all the answers, who built hyperspace portal networks before our sun even burnt, and couldn't find them. We settled for locating our brothers and sisters amongst the stars, another race that had fought their way up from the trees and into the stars, and couldn't find them either.
We always dreamed of finding a parent we could look up to, or a sibling we could share the sky with. They weren't there.
Humanity settles into their role. It wasn't what we hoped for, but we'll be the big brother/big sister to the life of the universe. Not the parent, no. We didn't create them, and we don't control them, but we'll protect them. We'll help them when they fall, and let them make their own mistakes when they need to. But we're here to be the role model and the helper and the partner in crime, the one we wanted but never had.
We keep searching, of course. And our observers on a thousand planets report that there are hints of an ancient race, older than writing, mentioned in the myths of endless cultures. Gods from the skies who stopped the flood, who ended the plague, who taught them to plant a new crop, who stopped the war just as the bombs began to fall, and who led them to a new land when the star began to flare.
We investigate these rumors and myths and stories, just in case we missed the Ancients we always wanted to find. But at the heart of these stories, there's always a description of the helpers: bipedal, two arms, two eyes, no fur, no wings. And if the species has developed art and writing, there'll often be a drawing of a figure, standing alongside a local god or great leader, and nearby the legend will read "humans".
Art historians and religious studies scholars are amused at how often they give us halos. Someone even suggests redesigning our force-suit geometry to reinforce the impression, but cooler heads prevail. We're not doing this for praise or worship. We're doing this because no one could do it for us.
Millenia later after we've been joined among the stars by our sibling races, a mermaid and a vampire are idly chatting while they wait for their turn through the portal network around Fornax A. "What drove the humans to do all this? Why did they take it upon themselves to search every corner of the universe and decide to protect and shelter and guide the many younger races of the stars?". The mermaid shrugs, which is hard to do without shoulders. "I think they just wanted friends."
The vampire looks out the observation window, at the thousands of ships from hundreds of spacefairing races, waiting in line or jumping through phase gates to the other side of the cosmos. "Well, they've got them now."
There's a beep from a console, and a warning light activates as the ship accelerates towards a shimmering gate. Our children play among the stars, without fear of the dark. There's no monsters there, we checked. There's only us.

Hi I don't know if you have been asked this before if you have please ignore
But
With the cow reader and bull 141 +Konig
Are the like animals
Or are they minotaurs
Or do they just have the horns and ears
(same with chayote graves)
Sorry for the weird ask I love the little stories about them sm, but my mind just can't come up with a final result of how everyone looks
Have a good day
Hi!! It's a perfectly okay question dw!! And no, they're not animals! I imagine them to be more like mermaids if that makes sense😭 they are bipedal just their lower half is of a *animal* and everything above is that of a human, plus a tail, ears and horns ofc! They can speak no problem but they also vocalise with their respective hybrid animal noises, so a moo for cow!reader or a yowl and yap for coyote!Graves
Also this is my own little twist which ofc you don't have to follow but I imagine them to have a stripe of fur down their spines from their hairline down to the tail; it's small but I think it's a cute add on😭
So yeah, I really hope that I answered your question good enough♡

If deep sea mermaid is free in some way she dosent just leave. She liked meeting the team and loves steve .
The time they went in the deepest trench in the world (thanks to tonys tech that went smooth trials and they are able to go there) they are surprised of what they saw assides their intended mission to find the bad guys hiding there as they look around a familiar tail sways and this time it glows
Steve smiled and knew who it was and assured everyone its alright
Tony joked steve fucked a mermaid
Wanda hears someone then at the front part of the submarine there she is Tail swaying in joy while waving her hand as a "Hi!!!!" Tony shrugs " yep shes not hangry
Bucky is also facinated in a curious way "So this is why you took too long punk
Bruce simply stunded theres folks like here here
Nat straight to the point to her" anything suspicious?"
Y/n simply nod and beckons them to follow her with her eletric glowing tail for them to follow her direction there . Is a bad guy hiding here
a continuation of the Sun, Salt, And Shield miniverse. (Also, this ask is from October. I am so sorry it took me so long to get to!) Warnings for action/adventure, vague innuendo, bad jokes (from everyone), and mild language have you met me?. Lightly edited. WC 1.8k
Pairing: steve rogers x deep sea mermaid!reader
Tumblr media
"Is that...is that a Segway?" Sam Wilson completely fails to hide his amusement as you test out Tony's motorized way to let you 'walk' on land.
"Heavily modified, but--" Tony takes the handle from you for a second to lower the max speed while you learn "--essentially, yeah."
It wasn't easy. In fact, the part they thought would be the hardest turned out to have a quick fix. You can only breathe outside of the water for so long, so Atlantian technology was formed to fit over your gills and mouth. Thanks, Namor.
Then Tony was faced with a wholly new problem. You live in the deep sea, naturally, under a great deal of pressure, and as a non-bipedal lifeform who maneuvers that fast underwater, outside of the water, you are made up of over 250 lbs of muscle. Most of that lies in your tail which they've witnessed crush a man's skull on impact.
That...should not make Steve feel the things he does. It really shouldn't.
He did always think he'd fall for a strong woman though. So. There's that.
You listen carefully to Tony's instructions, eyes shielded by enormous black sunglasses the billionaire obsessed over designing. He made you look like an old Hollywood movie star--albeit with vivid green hair and pale purple skin--and Steve wonders if the style was a purposeful jab at him.
"Right, the direction is pretty sensitive at the moment," Tony slowly explains to you. "You've got to really control your weight distribution so it doesn't overshoot your target."
That three-layer grin comes out in an instant, and you nod. No hesitation, barely a glance around, you start the contraption rolling, circling Sam, then Tony, then Steve with pinpoint precision, pausing in the middle of them all to cock your head.
"Coral reefs require sharp turns."
Tony stares at you, the nine-foot-long crown-to-fin specimen before him. It's clear he both adores and loathes how adept you are despite your wildly different backgrounds. You've grown on him. A lot. So much so that Tony has not made a fish-fucking joke in two whole weeks.
Steve won't chance calling attention to it though. The more he lets Tony delve into tech to keep you here longer and tech that allows humans to be where you live longer, the more Steve gets to see you. Win-win.
"Show off," Tony grumbles with deeply proud eyes. "Let's see what you can do then."
Tumblr media
Steve himself has never gotten to go in one of the new Divers. Tony always insisted on manning the crafts himself until all the bugs were worked out. The first prototypes fit one person (one not-very-large-person) anyway, so it wasn't going to be Steve piloting one.
The new models can fit approximately six people comfortably.
While Namor's city has a bright source of light to help surface folk see, you and your people function without.
That means a mix of infrared, night-vision, and sonar are all the team can use to 'see' your home.
Unfortunately, they aren't here on a social visit. A mutant named Tiger Shark is rumored to be hiding within a few hundred nautical miles. It's imperative he be found.
As great as Tony's tech is, it's clunky and slow compared to how fast the mermaids can swim and search. You can also survive at greater depths than Atlantians while maintaining your speed. There's a boing-hollow tap above Steve's head and he snaps to look through the low-light adjusted glass.
You wave enthusiastically before pressing a webbed hand to the window.
"Hey, doll," Steve whispers automatically.
Tony groans. "Right. Grariel, we are looking for the man--uh, thing I sent you a picture of. Have any of your people seen him before? Do you know if he's been nearby?"
The pressed hand turns into one held-out finger as you look away from the Diver. There are bizarre noises that send the sonar haywire until Tony switches it off.
Your tail glows again, something Steve hasn't seen since the first time he met you in the Raft, scales lifting slightly to show bright pink bioluminescence.
And then magic.
As far as is possible to see in the Diver, lights of different sizes sprout up in shades of blue, pink, and purple. Your people. They're telling you what they know. It's the first time Steve considers you might be a leader of your own people, too. It's his turn to be proud like Tony who looks duly impressed.
Quickly, faster than it can register in the infrared scans, you're off like a shot, and Steve feels almost sick to his stomach trying to follow your deft swimming.
"Well, ok," Tony scrambles, "I guess we're doing this damn thing."
He pushes it, but the Diver cannot move anywhere near as fast as you can. Steve loses the light of your tail and stiffens, gripping a hand over Tony's shoulder.
"I got her. I got her, Cap." Tony flicks a few switches on the panel in front of him. "She's a good girl. Keeps her tracker on. We'll catch up."
It takes too long to get to you once your tracking signal stops advancing, but then Tony grimaces.
"Uh, slight problem. She's ascending."
"How is that an issue," Nat asks. "Can't we help her more in shallower water?"
"Based on her heart rate--"
"Just get us there," Steve booms, franticly searching the scans above them for signs of you. The water shines blue now, and they can see some light, but Tony has them at a pretty sharp angle to get higher.
"Found 'em. Right there."
Suspended in cerulean blue, it looks like you're dancing, swirling and circling with odd twists and turns. It's almost beautiful until--
Bucky croaks. "Is that blood?"
"WHAT? Tony--"
"Hold your horses. It's red," Tony dismisses.
"Yes, blood tends to be that color," Steve deadpans. "Now help--"
"Black," Tony chirps. "Your girlfriend's blood is black, for the record."
They progress closer, and then a much darker gush of blood floats in the liquid sky but remains mostly red. Tiger Shark is a transformed human, after all; his blood remains close to human.
"Yeah, that's about what it looked like when she ate Chuck..." He swivels in his seat. "Do you know, I still can't buy ground chuck? Almost put me off burgers. Feels so wrong."
"Focus, Tony."
Swift like a cheetah on land, you roll your tail around Tiger Shark's legs and squeeze, stretching out behind him to grab at the corners of his mouth and below the huge shark's jaw. It's as if you purposefully display your catch, sharp ends to your long webbed fingers digging at the mutant's thick flesh.
"Atta girl," Tony cheers.
You beam but aren't looking at them.
Something huge, big enough to shadow the Diver completely, whips over their heads.
Another mermaid.
Actually, a male, something which Steve has never seen before. He supposes he knew they existed, of course, but this guy is enormous. Possibly two feet longer than you with a body almost twice as wide.
He completely blocks their view of you for a few seconds.
"We got something to secure him with," Tony announces to your comm.
When the merman flicks his tale to move away, you sport your Hollywood shades with gusto. The male brought you your sunglasses, and suddenly, Steve's...more than curious.
The Diver ejects a grappling hook and you and the male lash the unconscious Tiger Shark to the top of the submersible.
You are hugging the new arrival, who keeps his head facing down away from the surface light. Whatever the conversation, which is completely incoherent noise to everyone in the Diver, it's very animated. The male is protective, holding your shoulders and looking at your wound with a very clear frown.
You bat the guy's concern away and motion toward the sub where four humans watch in confusion.
You touch the center of the male's chest.
"Fah-ther."
Steve swallows hard. That's your dad? Holy shit, he is in so much trouble. People tease him for looking like a Greek statue, but your father is like...is like...really freakin' buff.
Everyone in the Diver stares daggers at Steve, and he knows it. All the years he's been off the ice, all the time he's had to get used to women--well, females, let's say,--and he is not at all prepared to handle Merman Goliath as an in-law, or...uh...sorta...oh gosh.
He raises his hand because he doesn't have any other ideas. "Hi, I'm Steve."
Bucky snorts. "Oh, buddy. Wow."
Too many thoughts flood him at the same time, and Steve freezes in place.
Father? He looks no older than you. Wait. How old are you? Steve's never asked. How long do mermaids live? Do they ever age? Do they just keep getting bigger or is your dad, like, the biggest?
"Tony," Steve finally whispers, "do you...do you know from your research how...?"
Thank goodness Tony takes pity on poor, panicked Steve, not stalling to admit he has no clue what age you are.
You return to speaking (a mix of sounds with rippling shimmers of light along your tail), so you aren't paying attention when Steve bends down to add, "can you though? Can you carbon date her?"
He's heard about science on that. Steve knows it's a thing.
A strange sort of elation blooms on Stark's face, and he turns to Bucky and Nat.
"That counts," Tony yells. "That totally counts!"
"Shit," Bucky grumbles, running his vibranium hand down his face.
Natasha is, for once, genuinely stunned and looking back and forth between Tony and Steve. "I'll be damned," she murmurs.
Steve gives in. "What's happened?"
"You," Tony boasts, "just asked me for dating advice. You asked me specifically to assist you in dating someone, and thus I have won a very, very large bet."
Before Steve can bemoan that, another tap sounds above them. You point to the prize catch of the day.
"Help take in," you say, quickly turning to swim up to the lighter blue waters.
"I've got so much to teach you, Cap. Promise I'll be gentle. Maybe I can teach Grariel a little something about--"
"NO" comes the immediate and emphatic response of everyone else inside.
Tony simply shrugs.
"What a great day," he bubbles, humming as he takes the Diver to the surface right behind your beautiful, ageless tail.
Steve realizes he has so, so many things he wants to ask you about that he'd never thought of before, top on the list being "what have you told your father about me?"
Tumblr media
A/N: Tiger Shark is a real Marvel character who I have included in other fics before. It was fun to use him again!
I do not have words to describe how enjoyable this was to write. I just want to torment poor Steve with awkwardness. I can't help it.
I...I may have figured out a way to incorporate...uh, some smut into this universe...but I don't know if that's a thing y'all would read. I'm gonna hold off on that.

so, yeah.
are we wanting our "aquatic monster" to look more humanoid like popular media interpretations of sirens and mermaids that are beautiful, if not a little eerie and otherworldly but still very distinctly human-like?
are we wanting our "aquatic monster" to look like an actual creature? I am talking the shape of water and creature from the black lagoon. I am talking about bipedal beings that may have some humanoid appearance but are, very distinctly not human
I don't really have a direction for the aquatic monster right now. I figure the best thing for me to start with is what route I even want to go with his design, y'know?
after that's decided, I can either start digging into legends/folklore or researching different creatures to put together something.

Zost Bainestooth, a D&D concept of a druid Mer-Orc. I wanted to forgo the usual ocean aesthetic for sea grass and barnacles. Zost likely started as a barbarian, before discovering a shipwreck from a coastal druid circle, and joined them so he could explore the lands above.
Not entirely sure how’d I actually play it, but his wildshape is indeed his bipedal form, he is a Little Mermaid at his core

Your list of Disney genres sounds very interesting
I'M SO GLAD YOU ASKED
Tumblr media
(fair warning: I am Bad at Making Graphs, so I'm literally gonna just type out the lists. Hopefully, it'll make some sense shbdgvdf)
OKAY SO
The 61 (so far) of the Walt Disney Animation Studios feature films can be split into 5 major categories:
Animals (20 films)
Princess (14 films)
General Fantasy (11 films)
Sci-Fi (8 films)
Package (8 films)
~~~~~
Tier 1 - Package:
We start the list with the film that encapsulates several genres, but with an emphasis on music:
Fantasia (1940)
Fantasia 2000 (1999/2000)
Then, we morph into more story features, with music still being the focus:
Make Mine Music (1946)
Melody Time (1948)
and then it becomes more "proper" feature-length, only split into two:
Fun & Fancy Free (1947)
The Adventures of Ichabod and Mr. Toad (1949)
and finally, a bit of a wild card, but we delve into "societies" and fully bipedal anthropomorphic characters with Donald, José, and later, Panchito:
Saludos Amigos (1943)
The Three Caballeros (1945)
From there, we drop down to our biggest category:
~~~~~
Tier 2 - Animals:
There are 20 Disney films that are solidly Animal films, which makes up a THIRD of Disney's line-up. The three major sub-categories are:
Animal Society
Domesticated/Trained Animals
Wild Animals
Jumping down The Three Caballeros in Tier 1, we start with movies with a fully Animal Society, with zero humans:
Zootopia (2016)
Chicken Little (2005)
Robin Hood (1973)
then it blends more into human society, but with a still distinct hidden animal society that wears clothes and walk like humans:
The Great Mouse Detective (1986)
The Rescuers (1977)
The Rescuers Down Under (1990)
We then go into the Domesticated Animal category, with The Aristocats as the "bridge," since it features animals that wear clothes and play instruments lol:
The Aristocats (1970)
101 Dalmatians (1961)
Lady and the Tramp (1955)
Oliver & Company (1988)
Bolt (2008)
Home on the Range (2004)
Dumbo (1941)
The Fox and the Hound (1981)
The last one is another "bridge," this time to Wild Animals, which is split more or less evenly between "with humans" and "no humans":
Brother Bear (2003)
Tarzan (1999)
The Jungle Book (1967)
Bambi (1942)
The Lion King (1994)
Dinosaur (2000)
Now, let's go back to Brother Bear and drop down to:
~~~~~
Tier 3 - General Fantasy
This category is bit harder to split, but in essence:
Children's Lit
NOT Children's Lit (lol)
Okay, so, let me go down the list to see if it makes sense:
With Brother Bear as our drop-down from Tier 2, we start our list with mythological settings (the "NOT Children's Lit," if you will), starting with another arrogant youth who is unwittingly transformed into an animal, then classic mythology:
The Emperor's New Groove (2000)
Hercules (1997)
Which then leads to more "grounded" fantasy, but still fairly "mature" audiences:
Encanto (2021)
The Hunchback of Notre Dame (1996)
and then deeper into medieval style...
The Black Cauldron (1985)
The Sword in the Stone (1963)
except now, with Sword in the Stone as the "bridge," we're officially in "Children's Lit" territory, with a focus on British Lit:
Pinocchio (1940)
Alice in Wonderland (1951)
Peter Pan (1953)
slowly becoming more and more dreamlike, until we reach the "wonderful world of make-believe" with our friends in the Hundred Acre Wood:
The Many Adventures of Winnie the Pooh (1977)
Winnie the Pooh (2011)
Now, let's go back to the start of this tier, Emperor's New Groove, and drop-down to another "royal turned into an animal for a lesson" with....
~~~~~
Tier 4 -Princess:
Okay, first context: I know there's some debate on which Princess films "count," but for this list's sake, here are the ones I'm counting:
Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs (1937)
Cinderella (1950)
Sleeping Beauty (1959)
The Little Mermaid (1989)
Beauty and the Beast (1991)
Aladdin (1992)
Pocahontas (1995)
Mulan (1998)
The Princess and the Frog (2009)
Tangled (2010)
Frozen (2013)
Moana (2016)
Frozen 2 (2019)
Raya and the Last Dragon (2020)
(Remember, this is ONLY including WDAS, so Brave doesn't count here. Moving on.)
Of the fourteen films, there are four sub-categories:
Prince/Princess (3)
Prince/Peasant Girl (3)
Princess/Peasant Boy (technically 4, counting Frozen 2)
Technically Not a Princess (4)
Now, that said, how do these categories work with my "drop-down" point from Emperor's New Groove? Well, we start with Prince/Peasant Girl first with:
The Princess and the Frog
Beauty and the Beast
Cinderella
All three had direct enchantment lead to their romances, to varying degrees, starting with genuine transformations to merely a magic dress and coach. But naturally, so did others, which takes us to our Prince/Princess pairings, starting with the OG:
Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs
Sleeping Beauty
The Little Mermaid
Now, we switch things up and go to the "Technically Not a Princess" category, jumping off the ocean theme to:
Moana
Raya and the Last Dragon
Mulan
Pocahontas
leading lastly to Princess/Peasant Boy:
Aladdin
Tangled
Frozen
Frozen 2
And as it so happens, the Frozen films are the only "official" princesses who turn into queens..... which drops-down into a largely forgotten film with another Disney princess-turned-queen:
~~~~~
Tier 5 - Sci-Fi
Atlantis: The Lost Empire (2001)
from there, we travels to other worlds, with some familiarity of our world,
Strange World (2022)
Treasure Planet (2002)
Lilo & Stitch (2002)
to our futuristic worlds,
Meet the Robinsons (2007)
Big Hero 6 (2014)
and finally, a "hidden" world within our own:
Wreck-It Ralph (2012)
Ralph Breaks the Internet (2018)
~~~~~
So! There you have it! I wish I had graph making skills to make this easier to understand lol ^^"

Skylanders Review: Gill Grunt
Now that we got the golden boy out of the way, we can get into the things that aren't Spyro! And believe it or not, that has more meaning in regard to this series than you'd think - but no spoilers! Let's start with the second Skylander ever introduced, if you bought the base game anyways, Gill Grunt!
Tumblr media
[Image: Gill Grunt is a bipedal, humanoid creature with fish-like features similar to the Creature from the Black Lagoon aka Gillman! He has webbed feet and hands, and rounded scales on his limbs. He has blue skin and wears clothing that's a darker, Royal Blue color. Alongside some belts around his wrists, ankles, and waist, he wears something akin to a janitor's jumpsuit with the legs and sleeves cut off. He has wide fishy eyes with yellow sclera and orange irises, alongside fins on his head resembling ears and a mohawk. He lacks teeth, but his bottom jaw has two tusk-like jutting points coming from the bottom lip giving him a pseudo-underbite. He lacks a nose, only having nostril holes in the middle of his face.]
I genuinely cannot tell what this funny fish man is wearing, but I think I've seen anime schoolgirls wear the same thing to battle so he's clearly prepared for anything.
Gill Grunt here actually enlisted in the "gillmen army," but met a mermaid on one of his travels and fell in love. He promised to reunite with her after completing his service but found out that she was kidnapped by pirates after he left. He continues to search for her to this day, and works as a Skylander to combat pirates to prevent this from happening again to others.
Tumblr media
Sources vary on whether or not he'll ever find her, or if he did after his many rendezvous with Spyro and his clique. Maybe she doesn't want to be found because she heard about his gillman war crimes.
Tumblr media
As a fishman, Gill Grunt is our first Water Elemental Skylander, armed with both a hose gun and some sort of weirdly shaped trident launcher. He's a cute little guy, and he's definitely a good example of the other Water elementals. His story is especially interesting, though unfortunately we never get a fully fish-tailed mermaid as a core figure in the franchise despite how obvious I feel that should've been.
Heck, his story actually lends well to his girlfriend becoming a Skylander if he ever finds her while on Spyro's adventure, but I guess a few upcoming Skylanders fill the niche of singing Ningyo for the franchise. And as a retired war vet, he has enough seniority that he can actually recruit other Skylanders (specifically other Water elementals) on Eon and Spyro's behalf.
Alternates: Gill Grunt gets a slight redesign for Superchargers, now wearing golden armor with a helmet and water tanks on his back. He actually wields a real trident this time.
Tumblr media
It's said that Gill Grunt loves singing, which is also what his girlfriend does, but his entire species is tone deaf. The book says it sounds like a jellyfish gargling on seaweed, so imagine that, because I sure can't.
Motto: "Fear the Fish!" - Yeah, a lot of these are just vague and absurd threats but sure Gill Grunt. The ocean is scary, so sound advice. 4/5
Nothing to write home about, but a solid little gill man. Three Chompies out of Five.

Here's my annual drawing of Merman Sora from Kingdom Hearts for MerMay! So happy I was able to get it in before the month officially ends, but if you've been keeping up with me long enough, you know that I don't limit myself to drawing merfolk solely during the month of May. As always, stay tuned for more mers (and then some!) 🧜‍♂️😉
Here are my Merman Sora artworks from 2020 and 2022!
✨💖 BUY ME A COFFEE! 💖✨ Check me out on: Instagram | Twitter | deivantArt | ArtStation
This is somewhat of a new tradition of mine—aside from skipping 2021, I've drawn Sora in his merman form for MerMays 2020 and 2022, and with this I hope to keep this tradition going... for as long as I feel like! 🤪 There is, of course, more to this tradition than an excuse to draw a cute li'l merboy: despite my dwindling interest in the Kingdom Hearts franchise as a whole, the first game in the series will always hold a special place in my heart, in part exactly because of the Little Mermaid level. Growing up as a weird (in a good way—I promise) kid who loved merfolk and other sorts of mythical creatures but was too shy to say so, Atlantica made me feel very seen. People like to complain about the awkward controls and the level's confusing map, but for me, being able to play a fun game as a li'l merman was more than I could ask for, at least at the time. Since then, though, we've been able to play as all sorts of weird things in games, bipedal or otherwise—so if Kingdom Hearts 4 doesn't at least have a Fantasia level where Sora becomes a playable centaur, well, I ain't buyin' it!

That Broken Promise AU Item Redesign: Tri Force Heroes Zora Suit
Some context:
In TBP, it was Chief (Blue Link), Smith (Green Link), and Prince (Red Link) who went to Hytopia.
The TFH Zora Suit is like... a fucking onesie, and I'm not feeling the design even if I like the idea they have it. So, was redesigning it. Shared that image with a friend.
Friend: They skinned a Zora!? Me: ....I mean, they could have, that's roughly what's in Oracle of Ages. Maybe it's the same kind of thing?
Since I make the Mermaid Suit in Oracle of Ages be a grave-robbing situation that results in a curse, now I have to ask y'all:
Some concept sketches I did today while I was working on this question:

The Canvey Island Monster [modern urban legend/cryptid]
Canvey Island is a small island in the estuary of the river Thames, in Essex, Great Britain.
In 1953, a strange creature supposedly washed ashore there, and another one in 1954. Reverend Joseph Overs claimed the being resembled a fish with legs, about 4 feet (1.2 m) long. Each of its two feet ended in 5 toes and it had a large mouth and two staring eyes. The fish had a strange fleshy texture that did not resemble regular fish scales at all and was pink or reddish in colour. A group of children spotted the creature on the beach and some of them thought it was some kind of mermaid.
The animal was most likely a monkfish or possibly a seabat (any member of Ogcocephalidae), the latter being a specific family of anglerfish whose fins evolved into leg-like limbs to move on the seafloor. Despite the existence of a perfectly reasonable explanation, the idea of a large pinkish fish creature with a huge mouth and two legs spoke to the public, and the creature quickly became a cryptid.
The interpretation of the creature as a bipedal fish-like cryptid monster gained traction among artists, too.

how is Alana’s beastmen form? Is it similar to her g1 mermaid appearance or are you gonna play around a bit?
No, not really anything like her G1 appearance at all. I was thinking of @artsy-hobbitses answers regarding beastman shifting and I personally can't think of a reasonable way for a bipedal beastman to shift into a classical finned lower half mermaid.
Instead, she looks like this:
Tumblr media
She has extra spines of cartilage under her forearms and along her spine that emerge when she shifts, the webbing between her fingers extends, pink mottling shows up on her skin, plus her feet widen with the webbing between her toes extending as well.
Yeah, she's a river dolphin beastman.
(Note: Submarauder shifts similarly.)

Saiki K character fursonas (a non-authoritive spreadsheet of ideas)
Kaidou - Scene dog. Well, technically fox. With wings. One is an angle one is a devil wing. Bipedal. Over 6ft tall. Eyes change colour depending on mood. Energy blasts. Alarming amount of muscles. Can transform. Is a ninja who’s better than Boruto. Lots of bandages, zippers, belts, studs, etc.
Kuboyasu - Thinks werewolves are cool? (misunderstands the concept)
Nendo - Despite suggestions of gorilla he decided he’s a Dragonite (also misunderstood the concept a little but still managed to hit the nail on the head) in a Hawaiian tee shirt with a mohawk who is a ramen cook. (the fan community that springs up around the concept art would be large and slightly terrifying)
Yumehara - After looking at Kaidou’s, a sparkle dog (but originally was thinking a bunny in frilly pink clothes that would be genuinely very cute and fluffy) who manages to come off like a Mary Sue somehow even though that term is so outre like it’s almost alarming how generi-
Teruhashi - Herself but with, like, cat ears or something (you can’t beat perfection)
Mera - Eating (panda. forever malnourished despite eating constantly but can also kill you)
Saiko - Says he doesn’t know or care to know about such pleb things, he’s not interested in having this conversation but if you must know he’s a dragon of platinum and gold and gems and abs (with a harem of OCs who bear a disturbing resemblance to certain classmates and yes he’s stiffed artists after commissioning them. This is especially heinous because the design is so self-aggrandizing it’s honestly kinda nauseating? Which he makes sure the artist knows because he will come back with ten thousand ‘corrections’ if allowed that amount to ‘make me look cooler’.)
Hairo - A dragon, but better than Saiko, w/clear lion inspirations also. like. If Hairo can’t breathe fire without being a dragon I’ll eat
Takahashi - idk, asparagus?
Toritsuka - Tanuki. He’s a tanuki. There’s really no other option but for him to be a tanuki.
Akechi - I wanna say a fennec fox - big ears, big eyes, sandy complexion, carnivore, also can eat the bugs his bestie is afraid of and endear himself to saiki further, but this one talks a LOT. Maybe also part bat. Somehow vaguely demonic.
Aiura - Leopard or a kitsune oh or a dolphin would be totes rad no wait its gotta be smthn hella sparkles oh how about a mermaid or- (can’t make up her mind)
Saiki - A cat. Just. Just a regular 4-legged, 4 on the floor, normal-looking cat. nothing unusual about it. totally average. It’s not weird. (Didn’t misunderstand the concept, just didn’t want to participate. Don’t worry, the psykickers get together and design a more appropriate one for him. Saiki is horrified by it. It’s too flashy by half!)

What species can the mc be?
The MC is canonically at least PARTLY Human. Their mother being Human. While their father can be either:
Human
Naga (snake/ Serpentine people)
Siren (mermaid adjacent)
Aveles (harpy/birb people)
Drake (Dragon lineage)
Below is an except for each of the playable species:
Humans
Lepus Homni, meaning “Rabbit Folk” in the old tongue, later shortened to Homni or ‘Human’ in the new one. One of the most numerous and oldest of the sentient races found within Tormundale, humanity has dominated the earth for hundreds of thousands of years. The only race that is possibly older, being the Gavanthi.
Humanity possesses a rather robust physiology, the baseline for all other playable races found within Tormundale, exceedingly diverse in appearance and genetics compared to the other races, Humans are difficult to characterize. Seeing as how they are the everyman. Sentient, bipedal, and Emotional, humans tend to live in close proximity to one another. They can live from anywhere to fifty to a hundred years, and can possess magic, though only in a minority compared to other races like the Aveles and Mermaid. Acorvi, Born of the Aveles and a human, the Acorvi bears a stronger semblance to their avian lineage than that of their human one. With a mix of feathers and hair and black, burning eyes. The Acorvi is often much smaller than both parents, seldom reaching 5’ or 152cms of height. Their legs, plantigrade, are one of the few things they take after humans.
Drakes, Children of the Sky. The Drake is born from a Pire father and, usually, a human mother. An odd mix of the two, Drakes have digitigrade legs, scales, ram-like horns atop their heads, whip-like tails, and wing-like protrusions from their backs. Their height is varied, more so than any species within those playable. With Drakes often taking after their more humanoid parent/lineage in everything else that comes from their appearance. Notably, the only difference being in the fact that Drakes skin and scales coloration is based heavily upon their Pire blood. (Drakes will be spoken of more later.)
Merrow, Born of Mermaids and Humans, Merrow are the second-most numerous species found within Tormundale. Cursed with humanities fertility, most Merrow come in litters. Considered exotic and strange by the human parents, most bear a striking mix between the two races. With wide, glowing eyes, more human teeth, slightly webbed fingers and toes, and pointed ears. They also don’t have to rip themselves in two just to walk on dry land. Many Merrow are powerful mages and court officials within The Bridge Isles, where most of the population is found.
Nagi, The only known subspecies of the Naga, Nag’i are born from a female human and a Naga. They take after their mothers far more than their snake half. With a pair of plantigrade legs, five fingers and toes, as well as possessing ‘human’ eyes, instead of the Naga’s more specialized, lidless ones. The Nag’i could almost pass for a Drake if one wasn’t paying attention. With scatterings of scales and a human-like height of anywhere between 5’/152cms and 6’5”/195cm. The only difference being the fact that they don’t have wings or a whipable tail. The Nag’i possess only a single pair of specialized Solenoglyphous fangs sitting at the top of their jaws that can spit venom once threatened or injected into a target.
They also possess their lack of magic. Making the Naga and Nag’i one of the few races found in Tormundale that do not retain or possess magic and are thus considered mundane by nature. The only other species to not possess magic are a scattering of Humans and the Lilibuel.
The Drake is born from either a Drake/ Pire and usually a human, however any lineage combined with a drake will result in another drake. An odd mix of the two, Drakes have digitigrade legs, scales, horns atop their heads, whip-like tails, and pseudo-wing protrusions from their backs. Their height is varied, more so than any species within those playable. With Drakes often taking after their more humanoid parent/lineage in everything else that comes from their appearance. Notably, the only difference being in the fact that Drakes skin and scales coloration is based heavily upon their Pire blood.
Merrow, Born of Mermaids and Humans, Merrow are the second-most numerous species found within Tormundale. Cursed with humanities fertility, most Merrow come in litters. I am considering changing species to lineage.
