Welcome to the Mamma Mia Song Tournament!
Tumblr media
Together, we'll decide on the best song from both Mamma Mia (2008) and Mamma Mia: Here We Go Again (2018).
(disclaimer: by my count there were 38 total songs throughout both movies - not counting soundtrack only songs - and I had to cut it down to 32. I mainly cut reprises and short little dittys such as "I Have a Dream". I think the only one anyone will miss is "Kisses of Fire" sorry lol)
Round 1 starts now and will last 24 hours. Each round will start the following day. (Also: the seeds were completely randomized)
Masterlist (all voting can be found here)

'Next week comes the strangest pairing at the multiplex we've seen in years. We're talking, of course, about Greta Gerwig's Barbie and Christopher Nolan's Oppenheimer — together dubbed Barbenheimer — set to go toe-to-toe for box office dominance on 21 July. The former is a hot pink franchise comedy inspired by the iconic line of Mattel dolls, the latter a stylistically austere biopic about the invention of the atomic bomb. Such is the striking contrast at play, of course the internet (read: Twitter) was going to do what the internet does and meme the shit out of it: now, all anyone can talk about online is Barbenheimer, sucking attention away from other major summer releases like Mission: Impossible 7 and Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny.
Though this clash of cinematic titans might've been elevated to event prominence by the internet's collective love of ironic memedom, it's hardly the first example of diametrically opposed movies dropping on the same day. Fifteen years ago in the US, on 18 July 2008, cinemas were similarly split into two queues: the Batman enthusiasts on one side, clamouring to get into The Dark Knight and usher in a new superhero movie age; on the other, ABBA stans awaited a trip to the sunny isles of a fictional Greek island in Mamma Mia!. Had the internet grown beyond its cringey 9gag nascency by then, it might've been the original Barbenheimer. The Dark Mamma, if you will.
After all, there are huge parallels between the duelling duos. The Dark Knight was the dark and dreary, terminally serious Christopher Nolan movie. Mamma Mia!, the fun-loving “chick flick”, a jukebox musical for the gays and girlies to let their hair down with campy, sun-kissed escapism. Say you did the double bill back then: you could spend two-and-a-half hours with Christian Bale growling gravely under the cape and cowl, then it'd be time for cocktails on the beach with Amanda Seyfried and Pierce Brosnan. With Barbenheimer, it's another pitch-black Nolan flick where its male lead does a lot of broody staring into the middle distance, contemplating the deep evils now ushered unto the world, paired against Barbie, where men are Just Ken. For both Mamma Mia! and Barbie, it's hard to think of more colourful chasers to stave off Post-Nolan Depression.
The Dark Mamma, alas, never took off as Barbenheimer has. Indeed most people online, anecdotally, simply forgot that the two released on the same day, such was the broad surprise when viral tweets prompted by Barbenheimer brought new attention to the OG. (Here in the UK, they came out eleven days apart.) Little media coverage at the time pointed to the contrast, the most prominent article available on Google search being a Vulture piece from the week of release, the headline of which jokingly announced Mamma Mia! and The Dark Knight as battling “for the very soul of America.” Strikingly similar contrasts were zeroed in on: “Are you a happy person, or a sad one? Do you see the glass as half-full, or half-empty? Do you prefer your toast with strawberry jam, or do you like it sprinkled with shards of broken glass?” All ring true of Barbenheimer, too, only the question now isn't which, so much as which first. Shard sarnies, nevertheless, remain ill-advised.
Hollywood studios know exactly what they're doing with such stark counter-programming: the lack of demographic crossover suggests, on paper, that the movies won't eat into each other's profits, giving audiences a variety of options. In 2003, for example, X-2 was released into US cinemas on the same day as The Lizzie McGuire Movie, and in 2015, Mad Max: Fury Road roared onto screens simultaneous to Pitch Perfect 2. Barbenheimer is distinct in that we seldom get such a major clash of two big-budget summer blockbusters, nor a meme-propelled online movement spawning Etsy merch and Twitter stan rivalries. But that's the key thing, and the true movie-loving spirit of Barbenheimer: while we might joke about Nolan nuking Barbie's Malibu Dreamhouse, these aren't warring parties battling for audience supremacy. Much like The Dark Knight and Mamma Mia! — which went on to be the first and fifth-highest grossing movies of 2008 — early projections suggest that both Barbie and Oppenheimer will both do pretty well for themselves. And there's only one winner when that happens: the movies.'

If in 2008 eddie, billy and steve are still alive( i know they are not but fuck canon), I absolutely know that steve would not stop talking about mamma mia, singing all the time the songs (with the choreography), saying how hot sophie's possible parents are, making outfits inspired by donna and force billy and eddie to watch that movie every friday
I’m HUGE Mamma Mia fan so YES to all of this!!! Steve has been ABBA fan ever since he was young boy so when the movie came out… bro was SHOOK!
Eddie and Billy are so done with Steve and the movie because firstly, it’s not even the music THEY like! But they do it for Steve and his cute smiles and laughs <3
Who cares if they’ve seen the movies more than ten time…..hahah… hah… LOL

I'd Heard About Them Before
read it on the AO3 at https://archiveofourown.org/works/49674004 by LilisBooks Luke had always felt as if there was something missing, something quite not right in his life. As if, every moment, every decision he had ever made was leading up to something bigger, something that would make everything make sense. Days away from getting married to the love of his life, Luke decided it was the right moment to finally figure out the identity of his alpha parent; to finally learn who was the person his dad had loved the most, the one who had broken his heart beyond repair, leaving him behind without a second thought. Whenever he asked his dad, the omega would say that his alpha parent had been someone from a “magical summer”, where time seemed to stop just for the two of them and nothing but their love had mattered. That their fates were to be parted, as they had left for better shores, to be who they were always meant to be. But Luke was a Skywalker, and Skywalkers were stubborn, so without a second thought, he wrote the two possible alphas an invitation to his wedding, hoping to finally solve the mystery of who his alpha parent was. Barbenheimer: Or, How I Learned to Stop Worrying and Love Moviegoing Again
When I first heard that Greta Gerwig's Barbie and Christopher Nolan's Oppenheimer were being released on the same day - July 21, 2023 - I didn't think much of it. After all, wildly disparate movies have been released on the same date before, and in an era before MCU/Disney dominated theaters, cineplexes had a variety of films that catered to many different audiences. The smash superhero sequel The Dark Knight and the ABBA-inspired musical comedy Mamma Mia! were both released on July 18, 2008, but social media was much less of a thing back then. (I've never seen Mamma Mia!, but my Dad and I did see TDK opening weekend.) Honestly? Initially, I didn't think people were really going to see both films on the same day, I thought people were joking. Boy was I wrong.
On their own, both films would have been hits with built-in audiences (love him or hate him, Nolan sure has dedicated fans). But by July 2023, the hype around the Barbenheimer phenomenon had gone nuclear. There were memes, T-shirts, and people bought tickets to see both movies in theaters on the same day, or at least the same weekend. The two have little in common, besides being high-profile studio films starring non-American actors as very American subjects, but that didn't matter.
On opening weekend, my friend and I saw a 70mm print of Oppenheimer on Saturday and a sold-out screening of Barbie on Sunday at the Village East theater in Manhattan, with a day break in-between. We had initially only planned to see the former, but even I was swept up by Barbie mania (I also enjoyed Gerwig's two previous films). There was an energy at the movie theater that I had not felt in a very long time outside of repertory cinema - people were genuinely excited to be there. When I was in line for the bathroom, a woman in front of me joked that you could tell who was there to see which movie. Lots of people in pink, Barbies and Kens abound, and even a few men (and one woman) dressed like J. Robert Oppenheimer, father of the atomic bomb. I did not dress up and I don't care much for the color pink, but it was still fun! It was a record-breaking box office weekend for both films - one a fantasy comedy about the world's most famous doll, the other a 3-hour doomy historical drama showing in premium large formats including IMAX. After a decade and a half of Marvel fare dominating theaters, this was a game-changer. Were superhero movies in their early '90s hair metal era?
I worked at a few movie theaters in suburban New Jersey in the 2000s, and this felt like a return to an era when word of mouth reigned supreme and people got dressed up for midnight screenings (people did this at a screening for one of the Harry Potter films, no lie). The hype also reminded me a bit of Titanic, which dominated the box office in 1997-98 when I was in 8th grade and everyone talked about it (weirdly enough, I did not see it until it was in a second run theater for some reason). But three years after the beginning of the pandemic, I was ready to go back to the movies - one of my favorite pastimes. I had seen a few films in theaters since 2022, once I was fully vaccinated and boosted, but this felt like a new beginning.
I enjoyed both movies and have now seen them twice (including an IMAX 70mm screening of Oppenheimer - if you have the opportunity to see it in this format, do it!). Barbie is charming and fun, with eye-popping production design and costumes and nods to directors like Jacques Demy. Margot Robbie (bringing humanity to a plastic doll) and Ryan Gosling are fantastic, and the film is a genuine crowd-pleaser. Oppenheimer is an intense, well-crafted drama with a few jaw-dropping sequences and a great, controlled performance by Cillian Murphy as Oppenheimer and a stacked cast. The editing by Jennifer Lame is phenomenal, and this might be the best work of Nolan's career. To date, Barbie has crossed the billion dollar mark worldwide, and Oppenheimer has made over $500 million globally - a huge deal for an R-rated talky period piece. Is this the beginning of better, more diverse movies in multiplexes across the world? Or just a weird fluke? Possibly the latter, but we'll see.
That said, the films aren't for everyone. I know people who have seen Barbie but have no interest in Oppenheimer, and that's okay! And if you don't care about either, I would recommend the documentary The Day After Trinity followed by Todd Haynes' Superstar: The Karen Carpenter Story as an alternative, at-home Barbenheimer. It's just nice to see people excited about going to the movies again.

THINGS MY FRIENDS AND I LEARNED/REALIZED WHILE RE-WATCHING MAMMA MIA (and other assorted thoughts):
Bill is into BDSM
They did a good job at making a pretty explicitly gay character despite it being 2008
Harry is actually a pretty sad character because he didn't get to have the family he wanted, due to being closeted and/or repressed
Bill likely figured out Harry was gay before Harry did himself—which made that scene all the better because I only remembered it as the "Bill's ass" scene
Sophie and Donna inexplicably know a lot of British people
The movie has a really awesome view on older people's sexualities, especially women's. Donna is not once treated as lesser for having had sex with three men in a short timespan, and when she shames herself for it, her friends (and eventually her daughter) immediately come to her side and cheer her up and reassure her that she is no less for having a lot of sex
Furthermore, while Tanya is very openly a sexual character and a comedic one, it is not the idea that a woman is sexual that makes her funny. She has autonomy and power and she is very loving. She's never treated as a has-been, but rather a woman with a lot of experience and stories, who is still unashamedly sexual.
ABBA are gods in this universe. I mean it. In the credits scene, the characters look up to the sky and see Björn holding a lyre(?) and wearing a wreath. The island is considered to be blessed by Aphrodite—or perhaps Anni-Frid. All the characters inexplicably know the tunes and lyrics to the same songs, as if they're hymns passed down through generations.
No seriously I really like that interpretation and it answers a question I've had about this universe for a while
And again I cannot emphasize how much I love the celebration of older people's sexuality!!!
This movie came out when my friends and I were 3–5 years old, so to me, 20 seemed like a perfectly fine age to get married... but now that I'm an adult myself, I absolutely see how it's very young and I understand Donna's concern
The somewhat strained relationship between mother and child hits hard for me. The arguing and lack of understanding but always being there to cuddle or help get ready... my mom went through that with her mom, and I went through that with her.
Colin Firth has a really sweet singing voice and Pierce Brosnan's is very nice too
The clothing used in the credits scene is (apart from Sophie's outfit) clearly heavily inspired by the clothing worn in the Waterloo (and Ring, Ring) music video. But it's like... Waterloo MV Requiem. You thought ABBA didn't have enough sparkles and sequins? Behold these swaggy-ass outfits.
As an autistic person, the Voulez-Vous scene hits really close to home. The sensory overload is palpable and I get stressed when watching it—and that's a good thing. The movie is incredible at making its viewers feel what the characters are feeling.
good movie

Top 3 Movies that Moved Me as a Person
My love for movies has moved me over the years and it brings me comfort unlike any other person which helps me to be the person of who I am now. Movies gave me strong feelings, emotions, learnings, and reasons to live a life full of hope and dreams. So does my interest in other hobbies and talents have brought improvements by motivation and inspiration this movie I watch. For these movies I would like to share three of the movies that helped me develop a progression about myself.
These movies were Dead Poets Society, Mamma Mia, and Tangled. Movies about poetry, music, and adventure that I wanted to be part of their joy and passion. Dead Poets Society about having a charismatic teacher to motivate his students to ‘Carper Diem’ Seize the Day and pursue their passions. Mamma Mia a movie musical bringing back the timeless songs of ABBA with stories about love, family, joy, friendship, and music in a Greek island. Tangled a modern Disney animated of Rapunzel who has magical long hair and showing her self- discovery and adventure.
Tumblr media
youtube
Dead Poets Society (1989) gives me inspiration to pursue my goals and just have fun. This benefits me while I am still between studying that there is more potential upon myself. I have hobbies like drawing, dancing and at times singing. This gift I have was one of my specialties that I feel special and talented. Mr. Keating a teacher of that movie who was Robin Williams’ good-hearted man who teaches importance of finding one’s own voice. I want to be his teacher because he teaches the students to think critically, take risks, and push themselves beyond their comfort zones. It gives me valuable lessons as a student and helps me grow and develop as a learner, leader, or individual.
Tumblr media
youtube
Mamma Mia (2008) showed me the importance of love, friendship, family and just having fun in life. These movies truly showed me how I should value my loved ones and just enjoy life without hardening myself too much and just go with the flow and let the universe guide me. Because life is short, and I should appreciate and have fun that there is no need to hurry myself to improve. Including my friends who help me through tough times, family to support my studies. Mamma Mia was so memorable and the chose of music brings to sing and dance like I belonged to that movie something I could dreamed of a beautiful place called Greece.
Tumblr media
youtube
Tangled (2010) that inspired me to follow my dreams and to step out my comfort zone that there is more to the world to explore. I am similarly close to Rapunzel because I am often quite home because of my strict mom I only cope myself with arts, movies, books, music, gadgets and just cleaning the house. Here I am just in my 20’s and I am still at home yearning for adventure. If only I could be somewhere that I longingly dreamt of rather than just being here and not waste my time and just go out there and see the world.

It’s me, hi!
Hi Tumblr, I’m new here. I finally decided to join because there’s something I want to share with the world and I don’t know where else to do it.
First, I think I need to introduce myself. I’m a 32 year old Swiftie . I guess that makes me a geriatric Swiftie (or an ancient Swiftie, as is currently trending on Twitter). I have loved Taylor Swift since the summer of 2008, when I listened to “Our Song” and “Tim McGraw” - if this Tumblr thing works out maybe I can tell you how I made those to my songs for years.
Anyways, since 2010 I had been toying with the idea of using Taylor songs to write a musical, sort of like Mamma Mia did with ABBA. Back then there were only two albums to work with but I swear I had an idea going. See, in 2010 I kissed my friend’s ex boyfriend and I felt really guilty, so she was a character who would sing “Should’ve Said No” and we would both sing “Fifteen”, pretending like we met then although we met when I was four. But… I never wrote it.
Until last year.
And so, that’s why I’m here - to anonymously share my Taylor Swift inspired #musical with the world. Before I share, there’s three things I’d like to say:
English is not my first language, so please don’t judge me if the grammar isn’t perfect;
I finished writing this before #Midnights came out so no songs from that album are included - not because I don’t love it; and,
While I wrote the words, I can’t say I wrote this by myself - it’s 17 years of Taylor’s work and needs to be acknowledged as such!
It’s kind of long and since I’m new here so I need to figure out how I’ll post it on here but in a couple of days I’ll put up the character names and their descriptions, and we can get the ball running.
So if you’ve read this far, thank you! I’m nervous and your support helps. I’ll talk to you soon.
Oh, and the musical is called “New Romantics: A Taylor Swift Musical”.

'Summer movie season is here, and fans are bracing for a showdown on July 21 — the fateful day when Greta Gerwig’s Barbie and Christopher Nolan’s Oppenheimer both hit movie theaters. And the absolute ideological whiplash between these two films has, so far, dominated the conversation around them.
Barbie and Oppenheimer are extreme opposites, both aesthetically and in subject matter. One is a colorful comedy about a favorite childhood doll; it’s over-the-top, saturated with bright pink, and unabashedly girly. The other is a gritty war drama about physicist J. Robert Oppenheimer and his work developing the atomic bomb through the Manhattan Project.
These films do have a few things in common: Both are helmed by critically acclaimed directors who have established a strong following, and each of these films play to their strengths. Gerwig’s Lady Bird and Little Women established her as a premier filmmaker for capturing coming-of-age stories and iconic girlhood cultural touchstones. And Nolan has elevated the classic thriller blockbuster into everything from high-concept science fiction to moving war stories in the likes of Dunkirk, Interstellar, and Inception. Both Barbie and Oppenheimer look engrossing, smart, and visually distinct. Both also have an absolutely star-studded cast.
Anyone craving a summer blockbuster has two stellar choices in July — it’s just really hard to choose between the two on opening day. Many fans have shared memes illustrating the difficult choice, or have committed to watching both, making jokes about the wild contrast and attempting to figure out which order to see them in.
Some fans have even edited together the two trailers to create one monstrosity: Barbenheimer.
Then there’s the sheer volume and tenor of Barbie marketing — which has made it feel all-encompassing and inescapable — made even funnier contrasted against the starkness of Oppenheimer’s own marketing push. Both films have received a handful of trailers, but that’s where the similarities end. The Barbie cast has appeared on The Kelly Clarkson Show and graced the covers of several glossy magazines, glammed up in pink. Pop star Dua Lipa released a single for the film, and rappers Ice Spice and Nicki Minaj did their take on Aqua’s “Barbie Girl.”
Nolan’s film, on the other hand, hasn’t had the same glossy marketing. But Nolan did tell Wired that filmgoers have been “devastated” by Oppenheimer, saying “they can’t speak” after watching it.
Warner Bros. Pictures has also gone all in on Barbie product collaborations. The Barbie movie was made with Mattel’s blessing, and true to form, there are a series of dolls and a DreamHouse inspired by the actors and the film’s lively set. Unsurprisingly, there’s also real-life Barbie fashion, accessories, and home decor items. But there’s also a Barbie Xbox designed to look like a DreamHouse, and a series of controllers. Maybe the biggest play for attention is a whole-ass house in Malibu that you can rent via Airbnb, with bright pink walls and roofing and an enormous slide going from — what else — the second floor to a ground-level pool. It really does feel like we’re all Barbie girls living in a Barbie world.
This Barbie-versus-Oppenheimer moment might not have come across as so extreme in past years. Summer blockbusters historically offered fans a range of films. That’s the whole point: There’s an animated film starring an animal for the kids, a kissing movie for your date, a PG-13 comedy for high schoolers out for the summer, and a biopic for your dad (or your depressed bisexual sister — we contain multitudes). Look at the embarrassment of riches that was the summer of 2008: The Dark Knight, WALL-E, Mamma Mia, Iron Man, Kung Fu Panda, Sex and the City, and more.
It has been years since we’ve seen this level of box-office showdown. Yes, it’s largely due to the COVID-19 pandemic tanking theater attendance, to the extent that major chains like Arclight completely shut down. In 2021 especially, releasing a film in theaters felt like a statement — a gamble that an audience would be willing to risk being in an enclosed space for several hours. But even earlier, streaming giants like Netflix disrupted theatergoing culture by making movies available on the day of release via streaming.
In 2023, this sort of showdown feels not only rare, but hysterical — and like a cause for celebration. Comparing the two movies is just as exciting as getting geared up to see them. And, yes, I do plan on seeing both.'

summary: “steve, are you sure about this?” you hesitated as you questioned with furrowed brows. he simply nodded his head and stated one simple fact. “I love you smiley I always will” causing you to smile wide.
warnings: fluff and angst, pre-serum!steve , he is eventually then post-serum!steve, first avenger!steve x female!reader, I have no idea how to describe the relationship so fwb? , if you think too hard about it yes steve is a dick in this kinda, sad ending.
inspired by: our last summer from mamma mia (2008) (the lyrics are in italics)
authors note: this was a very strange fic idea I had and I didn’t execute it exactly how I wanted but I am still very happy with it! also yes I did somewhat copy the Peggy and Steve scene from ca:tfa when Steve crashes in the water at the end. ANYWAY ENJOY!
Steve Grant Rogers. Your childhood best friend, the boy you grew up with. You’d spend a dozen summers in Brooklyn running around with him. Laughing and causing trouble. You both loved messing with Bucky, he hated it.
“Hey smiley come here” Steve hollered at you from across the park where the two of you always played.
“Coming Stevie!!” You yelled back and ran off the large and colorful playground set over to Steve who was standing by a bench. “What is it?” You questioned softly with a whisper like you’d be in trouble for seeing what it was he had.
He shoved his small fist at you, which held a couple flowers in it. Small red ones that were your favorite. You take them of his clenched fist.
You may only be 6 but you know Stevie would love you forever.
I can still recall, Our last summer, I still see it all, Walks along the Seine, Laughing in the rain, Our last summer, Memories that remain
One summer around when you were both 16, it changed everything you knew.
Things evolved past a friendship and fast with Steve. He was still your best friend except now he’d kiss you and love you and you’d get to act like he was yours and he was for that summer.
just that one summer.
It was the deal, it was to test it out. A one summer fling to have fun.
“Steve, are you sure about this?” You hesitated as you questioned with furrowed brows. He simply nodded his head and stated one simple fact. “I love you smiley I always will” Causing you to smile wide.
The smile he loved so much.
What could go wrong? It would be just one summer right?
Expect the fact that it has happened every summer since then.
Everytime summer would come around he would become more than your best friend. You’d go dancing, he’d take you on dates, he’d kiss you under the stars, he’d act like you were his girl and he’d love you til the summer was over.
You didn’t mind, you’d take this type of relationship with Steve in any way you could’ve got it. You had always liked him even though he was a bit too dense to notice it. But It didn’t matter that once the summer ended and you went back home and the summer fling would be gone.
“You know the summer is over now” he’d sigh and you’d pout as your eye brimmed with tears. Always. And you hug him tight. “You know the deal, this is how this works smiley, it’s better this way” and he kisses you one last time. Before he becomes just your best friend again and you leave to go back home.
He was still your best friend at the end of the summer. He always was. No matter what happened during the summer. And lots would happen but it never affected your friendship.
But all the feelings and all the love from him faded with the warm summer air.
Your love however never faded.
We made our way along the river, And we sat down in the grass by the Eiffel tower, I was so happy we had met, It was the age of no regret, Oh, yes
You really didn’t care one bit. The summer came back around as fast as it left.
Leading you back to where you belonged.
In Steve’s arms and having the time of your life.
“I love you Stevie” you mumbled against his lips as his hands caressed your body.
“I love you as well smiley” he grinned and kisses you deep and longingly prepared to stir the big pot of emotions again for the summer.
It didn’t matter, no matter how badly it hurt you in the winter or fall, when he’d tell you stories of the double dates Bucky would pull him along on, Or how pretty the girls were that he’d meet.
Those crazy years, That was the time of the flower-power, But underneath, We had a fear of flying, Of growing old, A fear of slowly dying, We took a chance, Like we were dancing our last dance
The tradition of the summer fling was cut short when one summer Steve had finally gotten into the army at 21.
He tried every possible time he could sense he turned 18.
You don’t know how he did it but he did and you were crushed.
He wrote to you as much as he possibly could.
And when he told you about the serum you had no idea how to react. You couldn’t see him.
How different would he look? Did it affect his brian making him feel differently? Did it hurt? Was he no longer the sweet small boy who always stood shorter than you?
You had no idea what it really did to him
I can still recall, Our last summer, I still see it all, In the tourist jam, Round the Notre Dame, Our last summer, Walking hand in hand, Paris restaurants
Our last summer, Morning croissants, Living for the day, Worries far away, Our last summer, We could laugh and play
The few months he didn’t write to you were a wreck. You missed your Stevie so much and you were worried the serum would have changed him so much that he would no longer be the little kid you grew up with. The one you fell in line with.
That scrawny little kid who tried his darndest to always protect you. Even if it meant getting the shit beat out of him. He’d do it to protect you.
And now you're working in a bank, A family man, a football fan, And your name is Harry, How dull it seems, Are you the hero of my dreams?
And when you had finally seen him it was around the summer again..
He had slowly stopped writing due to him being busy. Busy doing what?
Just being the Captain America.
Fighting in the war as well as performing and entertaining people. And he was doing a show in your city.
“Little Stevie isn’t so little anymore” you began to tease the man standing now 6”2 in front of you. He was no longer the little 5”4 kid from Brooklyn you grew up with. It stung a bit as you were no longer taller.
“SMILEY!” He exclaimed as he lifted you up and spun you around. “Alright down super soldier down!” You squeal with a huge smile on your face.
“You haven’t changed a bit” he chuckled as he lifted your chin up to look at him. You instantly melt into his touch.
“And you changed quite a lot” you lightly chuckle as you bite back the tears of seeing him making your smile fade. He pulls you up to your tippy toes to smash his lips into yours. Millions of emotions wash over you once again like summer waves as a huge smile reforms on your face. “Now, there’s my smiley girl” he praised as you fall right back in love with your best friend.
He had changed so much and yet the summer tradition had continued when you finally met again. He had somehow gotten you a job as one of the dancers for the show he puts on and the whole summer was filled with Steve’s love once again.
A love which faded as it always did.
I can still recall, Our last summer, I still see it all, In the tourist jam, Round the Notre Dame, Our last summer, Walking hand in hand
I can still recall, Our last summer,I still see it all, Walks along the Seine, Laughing in the rain, Our last summer, Memories that remain
“No Stevie please don’t” you began sobbing as you begged him over the intercom of the plane that was headed for New York. He was currently trying to force land it, expect..
Except he insisted he needed to land it in the water.
“Smiley this is my choice..I need to do this” he tried his hardest to plead with you. He pulled out the compass he carried everywhere with him, opening it up to a picture of you in the top of it. He sat it gently on the dash of the plane. He then begun to force the plane to fly downwards.
“Smiley..” he pleaded. “I’m here Stevie.” You sob out in response.
“I’m gonna need a rain check on our summer..” he chuckled lightly as he knew what he said didn’t quite make sense. “But Stevie then it wouldn't be summer.. the rule wouldn’t apply anymore” you sobbed out harder as the intercom picked up the hurtling winds from the plane traveling at a high speed down.
“That’s the point, smiley.. I wanna be with you when it’s not summer”
“Then you better get your ass back here Steve” you began to smile softly
“I’ll try my hardest smil-“ and then the intercom cut out. You fall to your knees and let out a loud sob.
You never saw him again after that summer.
And you never truly smiled again.

As 2022 comes closer, we focus on new beginnings - anything that is new, really - but I’d like to take a break from the demands of change and look at old favourites. List some of your oldies but goldies, such as things that you turn to when you’re in a bad mood and need cheering up, or just things that are close to your heart. Doesn’t matter how many or what kind of things you list, I just think it would be nice to share what makes us happy and cosy. Here are mine:
Folklore. In need, I always turn to music. The Beatles, George Harrison, Arctic Monkeys, The Last Shadow Puppets, Harry Styles, Lady Gaga, Måneskin... But folklore came at a time when nothing happened and things were dreary. It is my sanctuary, and one of my biggest inspirations.
Joe Thomas’s Lamb Story. Comedians James Acaster and Ed Gamble have a podcast called Off Menu where guests get to talk about their dream menus. Joe Thomas tells a story about how he one Christmas buried a lamb in a garden with his friend’s middle-aged dad. It’s such a good story it demanded an entire Christmas special. I often listen to just that bit to smile for a while. The story begins at 39:49, but the whole episode is stellar.
Född fenomenal. My favourite book. It’s written by one of Sweden’s most prominent comedic actors/writers as a diary of a girl who’s obsessed with Anne Frank. I read about five times a year.
The Mamma Mia movies (2008) (2018). Look, I’m Swedish. I’m required to like ABBA. But I can objectively say these movies are the best comfort watches possible. The actors to the music to the jocular ambition... everything’s just great, and the second one is so much about motherly love it hurts.
Little Women (2019). I can draw a distinct line from watching Greta Gerwig’s Lady Bird (2017) and Little Women and reading Little Women by LM Alcott to me starting writing and actually continuing. I love the whole Little Women things for what it is and isn’t, for what it couldn’t be when Louisa wrote the book and what it should have been.
John Mulaney’s New in Town bit. Okay, I could have put anything down here by John Mulaney (’Hello? Hush!’ ‘I was over on the bench!’) but this bit is just... God, he’s so good at telling stories.
Walks and runs. I go for a walk when I need to think, and I go for a run when I don’t want to think. The best medicine for a muddled brain.
The Last Shadow Puppets interview with Yahoo. Yahoo described this interview as “a cat-herding-like exercise in futility” and Alex and Miles’s banter always makes me laugh. ‘Trying for another babeh’ and ‘Finish each other’s falafels! Don’t you mean?’ are classics.
Moonage Daydream cover by The Last Shadow Puppets. Alex singing to Cam who takes his sweet time getting to the stage. Miles strutting. Alex, holding a cup, dancing jerkily. Cam taking one giant sideways leap from one microphone to another. Them playing the song in a way Bowie would have been proud of. Everything’s just great.
Anything with the Beatles. They always make me happy :)
I don’t know if this is too big a thing to tag people in but @dovez-yum @imaybeasleep @arctic-monkcys @bidet-and-legolas @skinmane @rock-n-roll-fantasy if you want to do this, please go ahead, otherwise, just see this as a hi! Anyone who’d like to share their favourite things are welcome to do so as well, of course! I’d love to see everyone’s lists!
