In this scenario Lyke would succeed in getting the heart of the Motherbeast in Episode 47 and while Alaway would notice & probably still call out to Aterika’Kaal the way he presumably did in canon, Lyke would be there and get to make a compelling case to Aterika’Kaal the likes of „If you stay with me I am going to feed you. I’ve taken care of you until now, I’ll keep doing that“ (argument supported by the fact he’s currently holding the heart of an incredibly powerful dead god). Aterika’kaal agrees and they barely escape through the Sanctum of the Stone Chorus portal. I think it's fun if Lyke then stays there after the hour described in the move is over, maybe knowing he can't convince Pickman & the others that what he's done is actually good, and fine, there's not even anything to worry about he has this totally handled, But yeah he then sets out from whereever in Sangfielle Aterika'Kaals domain is (Austin did say it was an actual place somewhere), and the rest of the Blackwick Group is left to wonder what the hell happened since Lyke just vanished! Alaway has possibly fucked off too after losing the heart. And them getting fired, the Carnival of Moted Light etc. would still happen (and I guess Chine would succeed at what they were doing since Lyke isn’t there?) and who knows if they’d take any action in finding Lyke after that! All that aside though, Lyke basically offers himself to feed on (through blood and/or energy) and to sustain that he keeps consuming(not literally eating) powerful objects/artifacts/resources and possibly eventually living things (I’d imagine he'd still take work as a „please deal with this weird shit for us“ person and when he has to kill a cursed beast or whatnot... might aswell feed Aterika'Kaal?) (What also plays into that decision, and is part of Lyke justifying this to himself, is that without him, Aterika’Kaal would become too powerful. So he aims to function as kind of a conduit & control the power intake so to speak. I think this probably doesn’t work for very long.) I think this eventually goes bad for him because it’s super taxing on his body and the whole deal kind of flips with Aterika’Kaal feeding/keeping HIM alive. He starts finding bodies in the domain again (alternatively, Aterika'Kaal gets better at hiding them because it knows Lyke doesn't particulary like it when it does that). Lyke probably gets stronger due to this power/magic wise, but also way more fragile (he's constantly anemic!). („I love you. I want us both to eat well.“ - Christopher Citro) („When I write of hunger I am really writing about love and the hunger for it, and warmth and the love of it and it is all one.“ M.K. Fisher) Notes: I put some resources Lyke’s canonically had in-game + some extra stuff in this picture (the arrow is a reference to Marn’s epilogue, the bugs are bugs (with possibly sinister connotations. If you want them to have those, it’s optional) and the fur is from the Ravening Beast). Another detail I came up with I might aswell tell you because otherwise noone might ever know: the ring with the blue stone is a gift from Es. Sketch Notes: 1. Lyke turning his head to kiss a rose / exposing his neck was one of my very first ideas/sketches I made while working on this, and I liked it too much to not include it. 2. This is supposed to be Aterika'Kaal giving Lyke a blood transfusion but it rather looks like it's feeding on him instead...! I like how the relaxed pose turned out. 3. I wanted to draw something smaller in a simpler style to fill the big canvas I was drawing these on (even though now I put them in separate files anyways...). The day I drew this I saw a tweet about a medieval monks sketchbook, so I was still thinking about that. I didn't even plan to color it originally but I ended up getting invested, haha

re parent regret article.... recently got my mom to admit she and my dad are deeply unhappy and the only reason they got married and had kids (in their early 20s, and it has dictated every moment of their lives since) is because it was what was expected of them and they felt like it was just the thing to do ... its very upsetting to think of how unhappy and unfulfilled my parents are but at the same time its kind of freeing because I understand a lot of their actions better now and their inability to raise us and give me the care I needed. this year I am older than my parents were when they had my oldest sibling and I kind of feel like im older than them now because theyve never fully grown past that point at least not as individuals. ya I suppose everyone has their paths in life and it all fits together and works and means something but it is very sad to realize your childhood was painful because your parents were really just not suited to be parents and couldn't have done any better. im trying to not be weighed down by their lack of self actualization and to be an example for them by manifesting my life in the way I want despite them being upset by it, and to encourage them to become real people now that theyre 60.. umm ya sorry your inbox has become my therapy sessions recently it just feels so much better to confess these things anonymously and write it all out to someone instead of trying to explain to someone face to face and have it deal with their responses. plus i think u understand a lot of my issues although objectively our lives are quite different! anyway yeah hope you have a nice day!!!! xoxo 2012 :3

it is really crazy to think about the pressure ppl face to start families , seems to be less prevalent now but yeah even 20-30 yrs ago it was just, What You Do.. for my parents, they were in love, and i think they rly did want kids, they were together for 5 years before doing it they planned it out, i DO believe they were soulmates. but then once the reality set in idrk there was just this disconnect. my dad was the more nurturing parent, and he had kids from a prior marriage so he knew wat he was in for, i think he missed my brothers a lot so he had perspective. i assume anyway. but he was also major alcoholic which i thought was normal for so long (in england it is i spose). that took up a lot of his time. i know so little about him or his inner workings its quite torturous to me lol.

and my mom is still alive but i know so little about her too, other than stuff i learned thru drunken outbursts. when i try to ask her anything remotely personal or emotional now she stonewalls me so hard :/ she's always just been closed. her childhood was Horrific tho like both her parents were still minors when she was born, her mom is a WW2 orphan and her dad was a delinquent forced to enlist in the navy instead of being sent to juvie. all the stuff she HAS revealed to me abt her life is absolutely bats**t. its awful like i genuinely can not feel a single morsel of bitterness towards my mom knowing wat she's been thru.

that being said i WAS extremely angry at her for a big portion of my life its been a journey to unravel. but at this point i feel so much forgiveness idek how i got here or when. but i love her unconditionally! i also feel that my moms self actualization was rly stunted, not even by having kids but by my dads death, and being left with these kids she has to care for alone, oh god if i try to imagine how she felt it turns my insides to stone. like it really fractured her soul and made existing problems spiral out of control. although that being said she is doing WAY better now in comparison to the past, im rly proud of her. when we talk i try to always encourage her like u say..

really the best medicine is being able to zoom out and view the big picture of Life, not just your life but how all our lives fit together, when you zoom out you can spot the patterns find the order in the chaos. for ages n ages i cldnt understand the reason everything in my life was hell while all these other ppl i knew seemed to have it so normal. Nowadays i can understand how it lead me here, the trajectory and timing of everything, it brought me a lot of EXPerience i can use to help others..Even just by having this blog where i can talk about vulnerable topics , ppl tell me it helps them, i begin to see a new sense of value in my endured sufferings. if i feel like im healing someone that heals me ..

this is going under a readmore because oh my god

togiri is so interesting to me because like.. of course naegiri was the first ship to grow on me, how can it not, and naegami is also just kind of like. an obvious decision to me. like pairing a normal nice functional cheerful little dude with a cold unfeeling weirdo who he hangs out with a lot just works every time. it’s about the CONTRAST. so when i started liking naegirigami it was definitely mostly because i just liked both makoto ships, but eventually i really started thinking about byakuya and kyoko. 

i think the first togiri thing i really thought about was, weirdly, the moment i think they were at their worst, which was when kyoko got makoto executed. like when i rewatch that trial, especially the anime version, the amount of hands byakuya throws because he completely refuses to believe makoto is the murderer meanwhile kyoko has to keep pushing that he is… on the one hand byakuya is half right and if he’s wrong he’ll die. so him defending makoto you can fully read as him doing whatever he thinks he has to in order to survive. but the fact is makoto and kyoko both had large windows of time during which they were unaccounted for, but byakuya suspected kyoko from the beginning. 

byakuya in the later chapters is so interesting to me even though his character development is so subtle i sometimes feel insane pointing it out. but it is extremely sad that he makes his big ‘i’m not going to play the game anymore i’m going to work with everyone to get out of here and kill the mastermind’ announcement in chapter 4 after being forced to reevaluate everything, and then immediately he is thrown into a situation where he has to distrust the others once again. 

the fact that he is so angry at kyoko for refusing to explain what she’s doing all the time by herself, and seemingly refuse to disclose her talent, is because he wants to trust her. but he can’t. and then him lashing out at kyoko and taking her room key is what ends up allowing her to pass the guilty verdict off to makoto since she can claim she couldn’t get in her room. byakuya what have you wrought. 

anyway so i mostly think chapter 5 was a naegami win, but i started thinking about like. the time between makoto falling into the abyss and kyoko following him. i cannot remember if i read a fic like this already but like…i imagine kyoko goes to talk to byakuya before she leaves. she knows if she and makoto both end up dead, byakuya is kind of the group’s leader in their absence, so she might want to let him know. 

so here’s the question. does byakuya, still confused and bitter about having to vote for someone he didn’t believe would kill anyone, give a shit that kyoko might be about to die? i think on the outside he has nothing to say to her at this point, but on the inside he’s started to realize he does care about these people and he doesn’t want to lose another one. but the possibility of getting makoto back means he won’t do anything to stop her. 

so what i’m saying is. it’s because of makoto’s execution that byakuya hates kyoko the most he ever does, but it’s also because of losing makoto that he realizes he doesn’t want to lose kyoko either, even when he still can’t trust her.

UM on a lighter note togiri is fun because sometimes byakuya is very stupid and kyoko is like how do you still think that you’re as smart as me? what is wrong with your brain you foolish man? and kyoko is wayyy better at hiding her emotions and never outwardly reacting to things than byakuya is. like imagine them doing anything together in a casual setting. 

like you know the school mode dialogue where byakuya doesn’t know what the toy vending machine is and demands makoto explain it to him? that’s adorable but imagine the togiri version of that. byakuya (understandably) kind of views makoto like a golden retriever, like he’s not trying to keep his guard up around him because he cannot imagine makoto posing a threat. but he absolutely can imagine kyoko posing a threat, whether to his life or his dignity. so if he’s ever in a situation with kyoko where he has to ask her to explain some commoner thing to him, he’s trying way harder to act calm and collected about it, but she sees RIGHT through him because he’s a dummy who thinks he can have a facade up around a detective. 

so i think from byakuya’s side of things togiri is about him learning to trust kyoko and learning that she is kinder than she lets on (even if she will make fun of him, more than makoto would, for not knowing basic shit, she’ll still explain things to him and not embarrass him too much because she doesn’t actually enjoy making people feel dumb) and he can start to let his guard down around her even when her being smarter than him AND having her emotional shit together better is frightening to his weird rich brain. 

from kyoko’s side i think byakuya interests her for the same reasons i think he’s interesting as a character. his actions are absolutely batshit sometimes, but in a twisted way they do make sense. he’s a weird rude mystery. but boy does kyoko enjoy a mystery. byakuya’s not going to just tell her his backstory like he does to makoto, again makoto is basically a therapy dog, so kyoko has to start figuring him out. during the killing game figuring out this one weirdo’s motivations is not her highest priority, but i think afterwards when they start working together and she has to have a strong understanding of who’s on her side, she would start questioning him the same way he questioned her during the game. and like before but flipped around, this is happening because she wants to be able to trust him. (if you think i’m implying from this series of events that byakuya starts to fall for kyoko long before she is interested in him at all: you are correct.) 

and i think kyoko, once she starts to trust him, does appreciate a lot of byakuya’s qualities, like the fact he is so sure of himself nearly all the time. again, i think byakuya’s not as good at faking anything as kyoko. i think his arrogance is real and most of what he says is exactly how he feels. (MOST of it. obviously he has his funny obvious tsundere ass moments occasionally.) meanwhile kyoko has to fake her confidence constantly. my interpretation of her character is she isn’t very socially outgoing, so combined with her severe amnesia, literally her confidence in her abilities being erased from her mind, that’s why she needs makoto to help carry the trials during the killing game. she is always calm but she is always hiding. she has to fake the confidence that byakuya was born with. so what i’m saying is byakuya is the one to be like ‘excuse me she asked for no pickles’ 

another potential area i wanna think about re: togiri is just the topic of their families, particularly their fathers, but also their family legacies that they both carry. kyoko is the detective her father didn’t want to be. byakuya is the heir who fought and won his place just like his father. kyoko was abandoned because her father didn’t want to be part of the chain and she resents him for it. byakuya went through a situation that was in his mind comparable to the killing game because he wanted so badly to be the next link in the chain. kyoko came to hope’s peak to see her father again and found him dead, and byakuya came to hope’s peak as his family’s representative and then was told he was the last one living. 

so um yeah i’m just gonna stop here i think that’s most of my thoughts currently this was..a lot LOL thank you for giving me an excuse to ramble

I often think about the discrepancy between Dante and Vergil's SDT forms, Dante's having a bespoke moveset and Vergil's simply being a more powerful standard DT.

And usually my thoughts go to what Vergil's SDT moveset would be like, but I also imagine how powerful and fun Dante would become if his SDT worked like Vergil's.

With appropriate buffs to each, Sword Formation would become his standard DT, and his SDT would have his original DT moveset. However, I don't suggest Dante's kit wouldn't be improved by removing his SDT moveset, but if Dante could toggle between his standard moveset and SDT moveset whenever he's in that form...

Putting the rest of my thoughts under a readmore because there's a lot.

There's the issue of what input would be used. At first I thought of it working like Air Raid in DMC3, but Dante already has Air Hike and a glide, and even if it had some kind of directional input to go with it, I think the chance of accidentally toggling would turn a lot of players off of the idea. Instead, I think it should function like a fifth Style, like Darkslayer in DMC4, that's only accessible in Dante's devil form. Accidental inputs are still possible, but in this case it's more of a skill issue than having it share a button with Dante's jumps. Plus, it would remove the question of how Style switching and Sword Formation would affect his SDT moveset.

Now, this of course got me thinking back to Vergil, imagining if his SDT form also gained this functionality - it would probably be easier to implement for him, since he doesn't have a double jump at all - as well as thinking about what narrative would tie into this.

An obvious and perfectly acceptable approach is simply to say that Dante and Vergil, while fighting and training together in the Underworld, learned a lot from each other and truly mastered their SDT forms in the process, but of course I'm not satisfied with that answer, because it's too symbolically lacking.

I've said in the past that Devil Sword Vergil should be the product of Yamato becoming one with the Devil Bringer. I think they already have become joined in some way, Vergil's Doppelganger has similar properties to Nero's DT from DMC4, and of course he now has an SDT form. However, much like the union between the Devil Bringer and Yamato, his SDT form is incomplete. And as unintentional as it probably is, this is actually rather fitting for Vergil, considering how reluctant and begrudging his character arc in DMC5 seems, at least to me.

He seemed to bond with Nero while he was V, and he did regain his humanity by the end of the game, but I don't think he's done a complete 180° on his worldview just yet. The way I choose to see it is, he accepts his humanity and his relation to Nero as facts, but part of him is still in denial. It's not clear he's really changed at all, and it seemed like he only agreed to cut down the Qliphoth because Nero beat him. Part of him knows he needs to make a change, but change is a scary thing when you don't know how to do it.

So while Dante's Summoned Swords become more powerful and his SDT form becomes more stable - perhaps his time training with Vergil has something to do with it after all, though Dante wouldn't admit it right away - Vergil remains stagnant, and this frustrates him. He sacrificed everything for power, yet even after regaining his human form, Dante continues to surpass him. Only once he lets go of his resentment for Dante, finds a new reason for fighting, and accepts his place in the Human World (and by extension, his family) will he gain his wings, so to speak.

The rumors of the dreams that connect borrowers to their loved one is still true but they mistranslated it into thinking it’s only romantic love - it could be familial and friendial (?) love! So Ian and Mik could have one since they secretly are yearning for a brotherly connection so magic poofs them a landline to each other

ok i got distracted again by other things lol. Time to respond!! Honestly this sounds like a really good idea. I have some ideas for again maybe why they're different. Since I did plan for it to include QPR and other relationships (Caprice in Melody and Kyrie's dreaming of soul mates story doesn't have one cause currently I don't have anything for him planned like that. Of course if I change then he'll change too.)

Imma do a little dump of my current lore considerations so I'll actually put it under a readmore this time :D

So this actually started something for me that I'd already considered.

I was thinking sort of about kids in this au and how since it's not always common for borrowers to be able to meet how they survive. Plus the pain and phantom feelings left behind from the dreams.

My thoughts on this became well... they can have kids. The dream is a special space that's almost physical. Just enough that it's harder, but two people capable of it can wind up having one get pregnant. It's just rare enough borrowers don't talk about it. Usually there's such a push to 'keep borrowers alive' perfect partners than can have kids will seek each other out.

So going with this let's just sayyyy Mikhail's father was a borrower, his mother a human. Father is aware the mother is human, doesn't care. Has been planning to go find her. She isn't completely sure these dreams are real, but she loves the man she met in them...

Then she's pregnant. Father finally says where he is, things are rough when she realizes the dreams are real and he fits in her hand. Terrified about their own child. Considers all the options together they decide to make this work.

Mikhail is born human size. His mother's sister is the only one aware, only other human that has met Mikhail's father. During the first night Mikhail is home after being born. He shrinks down to the size of a borrower baby. They realize the risks involved.

Same kind of background to his usual size shifter universe. Something goes wrong his parents die in a fire, as best he can remember he thinks his size shifting is how they died. (fun fact in both it isn't his fault at all. They nearly survived because of him, but his energy ran out and they protected his borrower sized body at the end cause their son)

So all of this to say, what happens to a half borrower that should have these dreams? Well... they don't function entirely the same. Now it connects to more bonds than it's supposed to. Not unheard of. Those borrowers Kaya learned about in the first story that used stairs to avoid climbing had dreams like that. The side effect of being half human; a sturdier body and heavier build. More effort to climb that copying human stairs made more sense.

All of this now comes to where Mikhail should have the dreams. Of course his aunt knows about them, but Mikhail hasn't shown interest in anyone his whole life so she doesn't think to bring it up. Suddenly he's having conversations in his dreams with someone who has some similar experiences. The longer they talk the more he feels a bond... feels this new person is almost like a brother.

All until a borrower that he'd known was in his house gets stuck and there he finds the brother he dreamed up. The one he thought was a pure figment of his imagination. Only there's Ian scared and begging for his life from the evil 'human'.

ok I went off but you gave me ideas and lemme talk about something I was already playing with. Even sorta hinted at with the borrowers that aren't built as light as Mira and Kaya :D

Omg I just had a really cute vulcan/human romcom idea and I just have to share it bc I think you might find it cute! So imagine a Vulcan and a human both work at starfleet academy as teachers of different subjects, they both start spending time together and catch feelings for each other, their students catch onto this and tease them a little but r actually really invested in their relationship and want them to get together. If I had the money to make a movie this is what I'd make lol.

I am so in love with this concept!! You were so right, anon, I DO LOVE THAT. I am totally getting carried away here, but OMG OMG OKAY SO PICTURE THIS:

Human teacher gets done with their last lesson before her lunch break, and just as they’re dismissing class, Vulcan teacher is standing respectfully in the doorway. As the students start packing away their things (slower than usual because they all noticed Vulcan teacher and wanna hear what happens) the Vulcan teacher comes inside and asks (logically of course) “As our lunch coincides, would you care to dine with me, Professor?” All the students are like 🤭👀💞 and when the Human teacher blushes/says yes, they’re all like nudging each other quietly and giving each other knowing looks.

A few days later, Human prof’s class has ended before Vulcan prof’s, and Human prof decides to surprise their colleague (definitely colleagues because nothing is going on, no sir, because surely Vulcan prof couldn’t feel the same). Human prof has cooked (actually cooked not replicated) a Vulcan style lunch that they thought Vulcan prof would enjoy, so they show up at the end of Vulcan prof’s class and suggest lunch together. Vulcan prof is extremely touched by the effort Human prof went to, and the students in Vulcan’s class are all like 👀 “omg are they...?”

SO the students in both classes scheme and come up with plans to get the two together. It’s pretty clear they have feelings for each other, even if they can’t see it themselves. Since there’s a nice grassy area outside where teachers can hold classes if the weather is good, the students from both classes try to convince their profs to hold class outside on the same day. Both profs get to see each other teaching (and looking ✨fine✨ in their Starfleet uniforms) and get royally distracted, amusing the hell out of their students. Suffice it to say they both dismissed class early.

The students’ plans are working out well. The next step in their scheme is a little less honest. A student from each class (engineering savvy ones) tap into the comm systems to both classrooms and fake a call from the infirmary saying to the Human prof that the Vulcan prof is injured and asking for them and vice versa. Both profs obviously take the bait and just as they’re hurrying to the infirmary, they see each other down the hall and all their worry turns into relief. Human prof is so happy Vulcan prof is okay that they hug them immediately with no thought as to appropriateness. Vulcan prof is stunned at this display of affection but so glad that they are uninjured that they hug them back. Like “I thought you were hurt, are you okay?” “Yes, but I was told that you were injured. You...are certain that you are unharmed?”

That incident knocks some sense into them, and they end up getting closer because of it. Obviously, they both figure out what their students did, and of course there’s disciplinary action, but the students are all high-fiving and celebrating because they sent one student from each class on recon that day and they know about the hug. VERY WORTH DETENTION. They are also aware that both profs are spending an increasing amount of time together.

It all comes to a head at an Academy Social Function - aka a dance. The students from both classes convince their profs to go by saying “Y’know, I heard [Human prof] is going” + “Oh, I heard [Vulcan prof] is going.” Each of them is thoroughly flustered by what the other looks like in their non-uniform finery, and it takes half the evening for them to even approach each other.

Human prof is all blushy when Vulcan prof asks them to dance, but OBVIOUSLY accepts. The students from their classes are all watching like 😍👏🥰 from the sidelines, but neither teacher notices. They’re too focused on each other. When the students catch them doing the Vulcan hand kissing thing on the balcony near the end of the night, the students are ecstatic.

copying this from my oc worldbuilding server, all originally under a spoiler but ill put this under a readmore. this is like, p venty so dont expect much sexy, just explaing some lore for the character i use as an icon on here and another "if you wanna ask me about my characters heres everything about them" call

ruby's whole bit is largely me dealing with the like. adhd/autistic feeling of being wasted potential, the "where would i be if my brain just worked" kinda thing.

ruby is a roxanne from fnaf unit (because ive always imagined those being semi-mass produced and shipped off to the entertainment complexes) who was broken and malfunctioning from the getgo. not in like a snaps and murders people kinda way, just had alot of performance issues and the voicebox never worked and the battery always seemed to be drained and they couldnt figure out how to fix it, so they just left her out and eventually she was bought by a resturant who didnt mind and just wanted a robot in general.

she never performed, she wasnt cut out to do so, she was mostly treated as a restoration project by whoever bought her. as always happens in these sorts of things, she gained sentience and was allowed to just do her own thing. importantly, the issues that plagued her from the beginning were never fixed. shes still mute and is always on low, power saving mode but still needs to recharge every two weeks ish apposed to the two months the functional animatronics need.

she keeps to herself and is largely removed from whoever bought her, so i havent felt the need to establish much about them. over time shes become her own thing but that looming feeling of not living up to the full potential she could be it has always been there. recently theres been alot of big stressful shit happening in my day to day and its been nice having a character to be in the headspace of "despite not having any effort to give, youre still appreciated" sort of thing

and the pinups and specific kink art ive gotten of her have been an extension of me also going thru a "wait im ace in a really specific way" arc and being able to put those feelings somewhere in a character i was already going to get the tits drawn of anyway.

if you have any questions or any thoughts to lend, im very open to discuss and worldbuild, just keep in mind shes come from a very specific mental state ive been in for a hot moment and not the usual Hotted Woman Sexy Style i tend to make.

So like groundwork stuff susie, kris, and ralsei r a trio w kris as the meister. susie is an axe ofc and ralsei is. Okay I've gotta be honest the only idea I have for him is like a crazy strong scarf like armor but that sounds stupid so???? Yeah. He's there. Kris is also a weapon themself (knife) but after a previous bad experience w a shitty meister (the vessel) they decided to become a meister. they cannot stand being wielded at all

berdly and noelle are also partners! noelle is the meister and berdly is her weapon (a halberd)

gaster is lord death and jevil is asura. it kind of works scarily well. and imagining gaster acting like lord death is fucking hilarious

card king is a witch and lancer is his son, rouxls is their body guard. I think lancer and rouxls would be in a sort of "mifune and angela" type situation :) and also they have to save lancer from card king similar to crona & medusa. I think he'd be a big recurring villain in general also similar to medusa

asriel and dess WERE partners, but after a mission gone wrong dess was killed and it gave asriel crippling guilt because he's her weapon, and he should've saved her. he uses that guilt to push himself to become stronger and becomes a self wielding weapon, similar to justin. he becomes a death scythe and gets shipped off to another country in true childhood prodigy fashion and it stresses kris out because they feel like they have to live up with that, but they cant.

in general I think the main trio starts off very very rocky. their wavelengths are compatible, but they can't get along to save their lives. susie wants to go solo but she can't, kris is five seconds away from dropping out, and ralsei is desperately trying to hold them all together. similar to deltarune they need a couple missions and moments to bond to really strengthen their bond and become an actual functioning team. once they do they work together scarily well. since I'm so picky about aus I really try to keep their original characters & struggles and just apply it in a new light & context because I cannot stand aus that are just "acts exactly like this character But Trust Me it's really this character!"

noelle pushes herself hard. way too hard. which isn't good because they are kind of risking their lives every day already. she over exerts herself to the limit regularly but it brings results so she sees no reason to stop. She's able to perform soul resonance well, she has a highly compatible soul, she's killed loads of kishin eggs etc so she keeps working herself into an early grave. similarly berdly does the same and they do worry for eachother. despite this, neither of them will stop.

I think a lot of kris' main struggle is learning how to trust again. the incident with the vessel was... bad. I have no concrete say to what it is but the main idea I have right now is them being used to kill a human against their will. and up until that it's a lot of little things- being bossed around more, having less agency and control, etc basically textbook unhealthy relationship but even worse because it's meister and weapon. kris felt kinda obligated to stay in it because their wavelengths matched up and they wanted to live up to everyone's expectations but... it didn't end well. Because of the incident they had all their previous kishin eggs forfeited and basically start off at 0 when they join susie and ralsei, but they dont care because they aren't letting anyone wield them ever again. (And then they get really close with all their friends and feel loved and then susie also becomes a meister and wields kris regularly and they're besties <3)

On a lighter note asgore is a death scythe and his relationship with kris is very reminiscent of maka and spirit because I think it's hilarious. other death scythes include noelles mom and... idk who else actually. queen is a teacher who is secretly a witch similar to medusa but she's not evil or anything she's just there for the vibes. She's also a terrible teacher but gaster can't fire her because they have a labor shortage

I keep thinking about robostone maintenence hrrggrgrghhh Robotnik sticking his fingers into places they really shouldn't be if Stone were a regular human. Arghh my brain isn't giving me any good ideas man. But I keep thinking about Robotnik running his fingers over Stone's skin, pushing hidden buttons to reset joints and test connections. Stone pretends to be calm about it, it's just his routine maintenance- but the excitement he gets from feeling the doctors hands all over him and poking at little spots that could literally undo him- the little shocks through his system as the doctor tweaks at his internal cabling-

ugh I love all of this!! :3

now imagine stone actually sustaining like some serious damage in a fight. like he's not a fighter, but he is a protector. even if the doctor is more well trained than he is, he can still toss a bad guy (hehe, what is stone's idea of a bad guy?) or turn their own weapon against them so he and robotnik can get away.

readmore for gore. I mean cybergore but stone is still my baby and I'm still talking (somewhat) medical here 🥺

I'm imagining some nasty slash on stone's arm and the only way to fix it would be for robotnik to go into surgical mode, more or less. the robotics are so organically advanced, that they heal like humans. it takes time and stone probably won't die from his injuries, the worst case scenario would probably be that robotnik has all his data backed up daily just in case and maybe he has some spare stone parts lying around or like entire shells, just in case. wouldn't that be fun? but this arm is gushing out blood-adjacent oxygenated lubricant and some of the mechano-muscular-skeletal structure is compromised so we gotta focus on saving that now.

(I'm imagining eggman in kind of, that mechanic outfit, where he's just got a tank top on and some overalls tied off at the waist? if he's doing some repair work? 🤤👉👈)

so stone holds his arm out for the doctor to start operating and he COULD feel pain during this whole process. but robotnik presses on a combination of pressure points on stones body (one under the jaw, one at the base of his neck, one near the palm to specify the location. it's a u ique sequence every time, depending on what he needs to turn off. or on. hehe) to turn the pain receptors off. ("you'd be squirming constantly otherwise.")

when the pain receptors are off, stone can still... feel a little bit of what's going on, but in a way he can't entirely describe or compare to anything else. the doctor pushes back his nicely flushed skin mesh, beautiful next to the site of the wound. it's tan compared to the almost-sickly pale translucence of ivo's hands, but stone is working on getting the proper nutrition in him!!! he'll be a healthy color before either of them knows it!

stone winces, the doctor had moved aside some of the torn tendon to start repairing it. it didn't, hurt, but it. felt. robotnik reconnects the joints and sews up the pieces that had been sliced--and then he sews the last bit of his outermost layer of skin up and it starts nearly immediately repairing itself, little manmade bots and programs working themselves inside of stone to get him functioning back at 100%. by tomorrow morning the sutures will be invisible, nonexistent, and nobody would have ever known about the slash on stone's arm.

the doctor presses all those buttons in reverse sequence to turn on all of stone's regularly functioning processes again--and maybe, accidentally, some additional ones, too--and then. I'm corny. robotnik loves all his inventions. stone can have a little kiss on his temple as a treat. robotnik would give him a quick peck and then tell him to get back to work before getting ready to take a shower to get all that blood and sweat off of him.

Fic writer asks - answered!

A while ago I saw this post saying to, instead of hoping for inbox asks from others, just answer them straight up, and I liked all of these questions so much, I'm just gonna do that.

1, do you daydream a lot before you write, or go for it as soon as the ideas strike?

Oh I daydream A LOT, yeah. Probably the reason why my fics get so long LOL! In the shower, in bed/before bed (I have a notebook for that very purpose), on long car drives (I should probably use a recording function for that), anytime I have time to spend, chances are 50/50 or better I'm gonna go into my fic(s).

2, where do you get your fic ideas?

Often it's other media that makes me go, hey, I could adapt this into a Bering and Wells fic. Or a trope grips me and wants me to write it for those two. Or character exploration, or what-if exploration. I have a pretty one-track mind; it's pretty much all Bering and Wells, all the time. I just love those two and their individual stories and their dynamic together. True OTP!

3, do you share your fic ideas, or do you keep them to yourself?

I'd say I share about 90% of my ideas, just to hear if others are interested in that kind of fic. Mostly I do so on our Bering and Wells Discord, sometimes I do it here on Tumblr, usually in the tags. Writing always used to be solitary for me; I never really had the fandom experience until two years ago, so to now suddenly have a bunch of people who go "ooooo yes please write that" BLOWS MY MIND.

4, how do you choose which fics to write?

Mostly the question is, is this just a scenario, or can I actually create a plot for this, with a start and an end? It didn't used to be like that, I just started writing down my ideas, but that has led to like two dozen unfinished fics where I have no idea where they're going, so these days when this happens, I just jot down the basics, to potentially come back to if I have some story ideas and not just a scenario.

5, How many wips do you have?  What fandoms/pairings are they for?

Several dozen, and most of them are Bering and Wells, except for the Big Endeavor which will be Undertaken Somewhere Down The Line, which is rewriting Voyager - with Bering and Wells on board 😅 (eventually) (this will tie in with A Blue So Deep It's Black)

6, What’s the last line you wrote?

Helena, still blushing, chose to take it as a compliment, and smiled back. 

7, post a snippet from a wip.

Her phone vibrated softly; she took it out of her pocket and smiled at the name displayed on the screen. “Good morning, love,” she greeted Myka, voice low so as not to wake the sleeper she was watching.

“Hey,” came the reply. Myka’s voice had the soft, slightly unfocused lilt of just having woken up. “Miss you,” Myka went on, with a sigh that morphed into a yawn. Helena’s smile went as wide as her heart – it was hard to believe that this was her life: she might even switch to a video call and not just imagine but see her beloved right up close; truly, this was the future. “I miss you too, so very dearly,” she replied.

I just started doing so! It's a real big difference, but I think it'll make my long-form fics better than they used to be. I'm excited to learn this! (Side note; I've said so before but I have ZERO training in creative writing. All of what I do is gut feeling and self-taught.)

13, do you listen to music while you write?  If yes, what have you been listening to recently?

On the couch or at my desk, and always computerized (laptop or desktop computer). Sometimes at work 😅

Not really, no. If anything, I have two prerequisites: quiet around me (this answer to #13 explains why), and enough undisturbed time (an hour minimum) so that I can get into the flow.

18, do you enjoy research?  Which fic of yours required the most research?

Yes I do! I always love learning stuff about stuff I didn't know before. So far, my High School AU needed the most research because I never went to one 😅, but I'm diving deep into pirate research right now, which if you follow my Tumblr isn't news to you 😁

19, do you enjoy creating OCs or do you prefer to stick solely to canon characters?

Mostly canon, with tiny smatterings of OCs. My OC with the biggest role was a self-insert, so not a lot of creation necessary for that one LOL

20, do you prefer writing AUs or canon fics?

21, do you prefer writing chaptered fics or one-shots?

Chaptered fics, for sure - I don't really do short, or rather I can't. Somehow my stories always evolve into long-form fics.

22, do you title your fics before, during, or after the writing process?  How do you come up with titles?

Typically they get a working title that is more of a description, until a title presents itself. That can be at any point - some of them I've only titled when I posted them, even! I usually go with titles that come from the fic - lines, words, concepts. With Strata, for example, that word stands for both "street" as in road trip, and for "layers" as in what Myka and Helena expose to each other over the course of it (yes, I think myself very clever for that). I almost never use lyrics - but for my Vampire and Werewolf AU I have the vague idea of using k.d. lang lyrics. We'll see if that happens when I get to actually writing it in earnest.

23, is writing the beginning, middle, or end of the story easiest? Hardest?

So far it's always been the end, because I started writing before I had thought the story through to its finish. I'm changing that these days, hoping that outlining will help me with that! It's an exciting process!

24, how do you choose whose POV to write in?

The story tells me. Sometimes it's a one-character-POV story, sometimes two (usually Helena and Myka), very rarely more. By the same token, it's almost always third person limited, or first or second person limited. I love Terry Pratchett and his omniscient narrator, but I don't think I could pull it off; it's not my style? I like to be in my characters' heads.

25, What’s your favorite part of the writing process (worldbuilding, brainstorming/outlining, writing, editing, etc)?

26, What’s your least favorite part of the writing process?

27, what area of writing do you feel strongest in?

Emotions. Getting them across, making them believable, evoking them in my readers. Definitely my strongest point, which I'm very proud of!

28, what area of writing do you want to improve in?

Plot, for sure. I sometimes tend to lose sight of it over the emotional implications of what's happening to my characters.

29, what’s something about your writing that you’re proud of?

Like I said for 27, the emotions in my fics. Also my use of words; writing to me is like painting, words like brushstrokes. Usually they're very deliberate, including their order in a sentence, repetitions, alliterations, choosing a verb form or a noun instead, etc. - that is, to me, the craft aspect of writing, as opposed to the craft aspect of story building/plotting.

30, how much do you edit your fics?  Do you edit as you write or wait until you finish the first draft?

31, do you use a beta reader/editor?

I love working with a beta! So much so that I married my first one!! I'm only partly kidding... with my wife, it just happens that that is how we met. But I do love getting feedback on my story, precisely because I never really "learned" how to do it, so hearing a second opinion is always helpful, and I cherish the input I get. I also work with a writing coach to help me get even better!

32, do you take fic requests?  Why or why not?

Not really - one, I already have too many WIPs and plot bunnies, and two, I don't do short. I had a prompt grow into a 20K+ story! Sometimes I might want to write short stuff and will ask for prompts; outside of that, sorry, but no requests.

33, is there a specific word count that you hold yourself to/enjoy writing the most?

Nah. The story grows to whatever it needs.

34, how much of your personal life/experience do you include in your fics?

My first series of fics was a self-insert, so that one got A Lot 😅😅 Others, I would say, profit from my experiences with emotions and emotional health; I'm a social worker by profession, although I don't work in that field anymore.

I'm gonna point both to my very first fic, The Right Irreverent - because I read a Star Trek tie-in novel and thought to myself "I can do better than that," and then went ahead and did. And the work that broke my one-million-words-published threshold!

37, what fic has been the hardest for you to write?

The Halloween Story. I started publishing it before I'd really finished it (I wasn't happy with the ending and decided to rewrite it), and oh god what a pressure! It made me so unhappy, and I just wanted to hide from it. I don't know how you guys do it to publish as you write; I won't EVER do that again.

5. What activities do they enjoy together?

~Honestly, there aren’t many activities Ichigo and Rukia don’t enjoy doing together. They just fit together so seamlessly but also don’t need to be together for everything. Like they aren’t codependent in that way.  Remember when Ichigo was training with the vizards and Rukia was content to not disturb him? All she needed to know was that he was safe. That’s it. She trusts Ichigo to do whatever it is he needs to do and that he will tell her when he is ready. She trusts him. Ichigo is perfectly fine spending time alone while Rukia is doing whatever she needs to do and vice versa. But in general, they just enjoy each other’s company, regardless of what they are doing. It can be anything from training together all the way to just reading/drawing while in the same room as the other - looking over every so often and exchanging a smirk or teasing face.~

11. What causes them to fight?

~Okay, this is important because it DOES happen - and it’s usually the result of miscommunication. But neither of them is one to hold a grudge for very long without talking about it. I’ll give an example:

  In the Hueco Mundo arc when Ichigo left without trusting that Rukia would come back. I know they didn’t “fight” per se in the sense that they yelled back and forth or whatever - but that’s not how Ichigo and Rukia seriously fight. When they are actually fighting (and that’s when one has wounded or hurt the other), it’s silent. Rukia didn’t yell at him, not until after she slapped him to jolt him to his senses. Then she explains that he hurt her by not knowing she would never have abandoned Orihime in Hueco Mundo.  

Rukia and Ichigo don’t fight about silly things like leaving a toilet seat up or not capping the toothpaste. They’ll yell and argue about it but they aren’t fighting, not really. But when they close off to the other, when they try and shoulder the pain on their own and don’t trust the other to have their back - that’s when they fight and it’s an eerie sad silence until resolved.~

14. What would be a dealbreaker?

~An abuse of power. That’s the deal breaker. If either one were to abuse their power and take advantage of those weaker than they are, but especially each other. I think if Ichigo were to turn on Rukia and like break her trust, it would really break her. She's had such a hard time relearning to trust and depend on others again and Ichigo was at the very center of that healing.  ~

17. What senses (sights, smells, feelings, etc). remind them of each other?

~Ichigo: the warm glow of a sunset just before it falls below the horizon; the sweet smell of cinnamon, cloves and honey that brings to mind a crisp autumn day curled up indoors with a warm fireplace; a feeling of safety, stability, like it's okay to let your guard down and be yourself around him because he'll protect you no matter what.

Rukia: The soft reflection of the full moon on freshly fallen snow;  the light hint of lavender and iris on a warm summer breeze; the feeling of clarity, of compassion, of someone staring into your very core and seeing into your very heart and accepting it in whatever condition it may be.~

19. If they could each write a single line in their marriage vows, what would they be?

~ Ichigo: "From the moment I looked into those violet eyes, I knew we were connected for life times."

Rukia: "It was you, Ichigo, that broke through the ice I had formed around my heart, melting it with every action you did until I had no choice but to trust you. You made me want to live again in my darkest time."  ~

25. What moves do they know work on the other?

~Rukia does this cute little pout and bats her eyes in a way that makes Ichigo roll his own and give in to her whims (usually Chappy related).

Ichigo acts like he *doesn't* want to do it until Rukia pushes him to do it knowing full well it's what he wanted the whole time. ~

26. What are their favorite parts about physical affection/sex?

~Ichigo's: He just loves the physical connection of touch. It doesn't matter to him  if it's sexual in natue or just affectionate. He just really enjoys having a physical connection with Rukia. He sits close enough that his arm is draped over her shoulders or his knee just touching her leg. If they are cuddling, he puts his arms around her and buries his face in her neck. Sexually, I imagine he loves to run his fingers up and down her body, just feeling her alive underneath his touch and enjoying the little shivers he'd cause.

Rukia's: She also likes to have a physical connection though her version is a bit rougher. She does allow those soft moments and the touches to happen. But she also loves to be a little more forward. Biting, scratching and *edging* Ichigo are all things she loves to do. She'll let him get close with his cuddles and then start biting that sensitive spot on his neck she knows too well. She'll mark him  (consensually of course) and drive him wild before letting him release. ~

27. Do they have any kinks/fetishes that they share?

~Well I actually think they both switch and are able to be "tops" or "bottoms" interchangeably depending on the mood of their partner. As far as fetishes, I'm not really sure yet. I think Ichigo does think Rukia looks *very good* in a sexy rabbit costume. Rukia isn't a virgin but she's not super experienced either. Ichigo is … probably a virgin but not because he *couldn’t* get it but he just isn't interested. I think Ichigo is the type to really only do that with those he is in a serious relationship with.

I think they would honestly both enjoy exploring this with each other. ~

28. Write a ~300 fantasy one of them has about the other.

2: Their smile Val: Subtle and easy to miss. It's in their eyes more than their mouth, a crinkle and a warmth that comes with just a light quirk of their lips. If you see them smiling widely and openly and with socialite charm, they're lying to someone, be it you or themself.

Tanwen: Bright and wide and earnest. Her happiness and her enthusiasm and her cheer are right there at the surface and her smile shows it all at the drop of a hat.

Keiji: True smiles are rare for this boy. Smirks absolutely, grins always, but a real honest smile? Only for people he trusts, and even then only when he's half-asleep or drunk or otherwise unable to have his guard fully up.

Jay: You're more likely to get an eyeroll than a smile, but they do exist! Sometimes a true, soft smile that manages to light up even his usual scowl, sometimes a crooked grin when he just made a joke so deadpan no one can tell if it's a joke or not and he's enjoying the confusion. Secret: his beard hides his dimples

Whisper: She has an adorable smile, with dimples and all, just don't tell her that or you will get kicked in the shins. She also knows she has very cute dimples and she hates it, so she very stubbornly tries not to smile (but she's terrible at it).

Raya: ........She.... tries.........

8: What they like to eat Val: They have a soft spot for cookies, of most kinds. They have not yet found their favourite.

Tanwen: A good bread. Her dad always baked fresh bread for the family and she has not found anything that compares

Tanwen: Barely keeping her eyes open, nodding off whenever she sits down, she's the kinda fool who'd walk into a door cause she was too tired to pay attention. She doesn't do well on little sleep.

Keiji: Hopped up on redbull, talking a mile a minute, full of energy but all over the place. Amusing, but he's not getting anything done.

Jay: He doesn't tend to sleep too well, so he's pretty used to getting by on little sleep. He'll try to catch what catnaps he can, but in the meantime he's good at muscling down and getting on with his day. He'll be a grouch, but not much more than usual

Whisper: She tries. Oh how she tries. She is going to fall asleep in class and accidentally elbow the teacher when he wakes her up.

Raya: Somehow? Fine? There's definitely some magic going on here do not trust it

25: Why you enjoy them Val: Val embodies survival. Overcoming your past and your pain and piecing together a new identity for yourself, one you chose. They went through terrible things and they still struggle but they learned, they are learning, and they're getting better every day. They're happy, and they have worked so so hard to earn that happiness.

They're the part of me that wants to be better, and writing them is the feeling that one day I will get there, too. They're also the conviction that such struggles and issues don't make you any less worthy of love, or capable of it.

Tanwen: Tanwen is just so bright. Her DnD campaign finished this week, actually, but I've played her for about five years now and being in her headspace makes me so happy. It's warm and bright and optimistic, no matter how dark things seen. It's loving everything and everyone, and while that isn't always me and I wouldn't want it to be, it's such a positive and lovely headspace to spend time in

Keiji: he's my terrible horny bastard son what else do i need to say. (and he's the trials and tribulations of opening up emotionally, the mortifying ordeal of being known, and the catharsis of being met with only love and acceptance)

Jay: Jay is a rock. He's steady and sturdy and down to earth and chill, and while that also makes him hell to write because he's so unbothered, it's what makes it really nice and chill to be in his headspace. He unapologetically himself, spends his time just vibing, and I love him.

Also, as I have recently come to realise, he is my transmasc gender envy and and me exploring how masculinity might fit and feel

Whisper: She's an adorable awkward potato. She's full teen cringiness and I love her for it. You go be the hero honey, you go be cool and fall flat on your face, you're doing amazing and you deserve the world

Raya: my druid self-projection no, but also yes. Raya is the thunderstorm and the sunshower and she's force of a strong wind, and she's all that in fun to write magic. Her character is definitely not as developed as some of my regulars, and that makes her harder to actually write, but I love her relationship with nature and her powers

ALRIGHT I can finally post this! The first of hopefully a bunch of big movie cgi monster reimaginings that I want to do. This was also posted one month ago on my patreon, along WIPS and other stuff, so do check it out!! 

Anyway, this is the full, in-depth rework for the indominus rex that i worked on during April!! There’s a LOT of thought that went into this. and i mean A SHIT TON. I took the time to write a long ass artist/design commentary (under the readmore, bc its long) to explain all my decisions for this, design-wise!

Artist commentary - Indominus rex

Okay there’s a lot I want to talk about but let’s start…. at the beginning shall we.

I did this whoooole thing for two reasons: 1. I want to prove that I am at least some good at creature design, and able to do concept art for my things and 2. a lot of movie monsters, particularly ones made by legendary studios, are never…. that great at all. The indominus had SO MUCH promise as a concept, but in the end they wasted her potential and that was really sad; so i took it onto myself to try and make another, wilder take on it.

OH BUT FIRST, DISCLAIMER: The art is in no way meant to be 100% anatomically correct. First bc this thing does not and hopefully never will exist physically, and second because I’m a simple student and can only dedicate so much time to anatomy and such yes.

PART 1. CONSTRUCTION OF THE BEAST

The indominus, according to the movie, is an artificial dinosaur, made from scraps and selected genetics from both a lot of dinosaurs (tyrannosaurus, gigantosaurus, therizinosaurus, majungasaurus, rugops, velocirraptor, carnotaurus and although it is not a dinosaur it also has deinosuchus dna) and some modern animals as well (including cuttlefish, tree frog and pit viper), making it a chimera of sorts.

The first thing you might notice is that.. i gave it a veil! Like a cuttlefish’s swimmy.. fin thing. The whole top part of the indominus is a cuttlefish “cover”, and hence it can do anything a cuttlefish could do (change colors or textures) but only on that part of its body. The movie pulling the ‘yeah it can turn invisible lol’ card was hhhh because we don’t really see it in action (i mean. That’s the point but also not) and it’s kind of wild that it could have just changed its whole body’s color at will so why not put a little more sense into it and just have it be the parts influenced by the cuttlefish? Oh, and a lot of the animals used to make this genetic trainwreck are water dwelling and/or amphibian so…  this monster is ALSO amphibian. It can swim really well, and generally do well in water for certain periods of time (it’s still much better suited for land but I digress). I think it’d have used the camouflage ability especially when going along the surface of the water so it’s stark white body doesn’t stand out horribly.

For the head I went with a much more crocodilian approach since it’s supposed to be heavy and wide, however the original design had a bunch of mistakes that i aimed to fix with that too, namely: the jaw joint being literally In The Neck for some reason, made it look frail as hell and like it’d have no strength, and also it had a horribly frail looking, shrinkwrapped neck, which I also took a stab at. (Speaking of shrinkwrapping, they did the same for the skull which. yikes.)

The OG head also had a ridiculous width to it compared to the eye placement, so it wouldn’t have been able to see much at all, added to the fact that it had a really, really small brain case.

In this new version i tried to fix all those things, and added a few aspects from other animals like the eyes being a mixture between slanted frog/snake eyes, and then the cuttlefish horizontal pupil. Biologically and realistically, this wouldn’t make much sense at all but fuck it, it can’t possibly be the worst thing.

The indo I made also has a lot of spikes on its head (as opposed to just two) and they’re all forward facing (as opposed to the OG’s backward facing spikes ???) AND last but not least it has heat pits right below its eyes. Those are from the pit viper and can sense heat signatures (cause i mean. why would you make a dinosaur and specifically mention pit viper dna but then do nothing with that. oh my god.)

I also discarded all the hard scales/spikes on the back in favor of it being able to make new ‘spikes’ with the cuttlefish texturing.

Next item: the arms. In the movie they’re a big part of the dinosaur’s action for whatever reason, it behaves like a half quadrupedal half bipedal creature. Sadly i elected to ignore that. The designers gave it long talons and then justified it by using therizinosaurus, which 1. had bigger talons, proportionately and 2. had bird wrists. So it could NOT have walked on its front legs and that’s the direction i went. Amped the fuck out of those claws, and i gave it the tree frog pads on its fingers (so instead of having to always spear things, it can hold onto stuff by patting it with those) and put some webbing all over bc 1. frog dna, 2. bird dna, 3. cuttlefish dna. I also gave it pin feathers on its forearms, because yeah velociraptor dna. Whoever did the OG design just said ‘yeah we gave it pin feathers from velociraptor dna’ which is what those weird spikes on its neck were, and called it a day.

The legs and tail don’t have that much more going on for them, same stuff. Frog pads and then a couple feathers. The tail itself i imagine is less rounded like we’ve been reconstructing theropods and more crocodilian looking so it can propel itself when swimming.

PART 2. GIVING IT FLAWS

Of course, being a genetic trainwreck, it’s not a Perfect Organism™, so you can see fuck-ups here and there because this thing had so many dna used for it...,

Let’s start with the head (because it’s where most of the items are anyway.)

The fucked up teeth. Those drove me up the entire wall in the OG design because yeah, they were fucked up bc of dna and that was cool! But they also had them all on the outside for some reason?? and they were stupid sharp and small so they didn’t look like many at all… just frail in general. I changed that to have a couple external teeth (croc dna again, tbh i just went with a lot of croc) and then a LOT of teeth actually inside the mouth. Also asymmetrical because, again. fuckt up.

In the mouth too, it’s got two tongues. One is actually functional, and the other (the snakey one) is fused to the bottom of its mouth. Itd still function as a smell sensory organ like an actual snake’s, it just cannot be thwiped out of the mouth.

The hole in its lower jaw is also the snake dna fucking up, making a not-quite-split jaw. It’s not functional either, it’s just a hole. It’s also got a regular opening to flick the tongue out like a normal snake, it just can’t.

I … did not give it scales (i did give it HINTS of scales, but nothing major) Because. yeah i figured it would be less likely to have them in this scenario haha

Also apparently in the movie they said it could manipulate its heat signature and i just scrapped that entirely cause what the fuck. I mean it’s cool but it didn’t do much, i feel like it’d be scarier if they could have KNOWN where this thing was but just couldn’t zone in on it either way bc it was that good at being stealthy.

The colors. The OG design is white bc of the invisibility thing, and it gives it an overall artificial feel that is great. I wasn’t quite able to emulate that because I went for a more naturally colored look, it’s just an albino bastard. Being this color would definitely be a disadvantage since it’d make it visible to everyone, so rather than just go ‘oh god oh fuck’ [turns invisible] and be done it’d have to curl up and position itself so the veil covers any would-be visible parts of it.

Nier Automata: [A]fterthoughts

Game: Nier Automata: Become As Gods Edition (June 26, 2018)

Console: Xbox One (Via Xbox Game Pass)

Alright so I’m trying something a little different this time with my opinions on a game. Usually I will share this on Twitter in a thread. However, I feel like I’m having more and more to say on games I play lately. And Twitter threads just don’t feel right for sharing massive amounts of text. So I thought I’d give this a shot now. However, this isn’t meant to be a review or an indication of whether or not YOU should try the game. This is just me pouring my heart out about what I’ve played and giving my honest opinions about what I just experienced. This is just for anyone interested, and I highly recommend you try out this game and any other game I choose to talk about in the future, to get your own opinions on how you feel for it.

As such, this isn’t a very well written piece either. It’s mostly just me throwing up thoughts into a post. But, if that’s your thing or you’re just curious about what I have to say, you can read my huge info dump on my feelings about Nier Automata in the readmore! 

Spoiler Warning for some parts of the game, including the finale and ending.

Opening

About 2 days ago, I sat down and beat Nier Automata for the first time. And after sitting on it for a bit, I’m ready to talk about my time with it. I wasn’t originally planning on doing a big thing for playing this game (I was saving it for a different game.) But plans got sidetracked, and by that I mean Microsoft had a sale on 3 months of Game Pass for $1. And I couldn’t pass up the opportunity to try it out. I was really excited to see they had the game on the service, as I’ve been wanting to play it since it came out. So naturally, I jumped at the chance.

Stuff I liked

Honestly, I really liked this game. I thought was cool and loved a lot of the topics it covered, as they’re things I really enjoy seeing games tackle. Evolution of life, the existence of religion and our relationships with god and death, strange surreal things, androids and robots becoming more than just androids and robots. The story has so many aspects I really loved seeing. A highlight for me was seeing the robots start to become sentient and deal with grief, family bonds, how they should live outside of what they were programmed to do. It was endlessly fascinating to me.

Game also had tons of fantastic characters. I think my favorites may have been 6O and Pascal, if I’m being honest with myself. But also also really liked all 3 of the main playable Androids, and I found myself falling totally in love with the pods too. There’s tons of other great and interesting characters you don’t even get to play as or see that much, it has a fantastic cast I really loved. Particularly, I thought the designs of the androids were really interesting. Dressed in all black with white hair is a cool aesthetic. My favorite design may have been 2B’s, obviously I thought she was really hot. But I think her outfit is actually very cool and classy in a way that understands how to make a character hot without just being in your face about it? If that makes sense. I also really loved A2′s look, being able to see her joints is a really cool underused aspect for an android design. I wasn’t super into the robots themselves at first, but I found myself really loving how they looked by the end of it. Their weird and minimalist designs really leant themselves to the sad and peculiar story they had to tell.

Nier has a fantastic gameplay style too. I was shocked to learn that it was a Bullet Hell! Bullet Hells and Shmups are my “secret favorite” genre, that I really love but rarely actually tap into. I thought the game had really fun use of Bullet Hell gameplay, with fun Shmup sections and fun action RPG sections. I was particularly impressed with how much fun the crossover of the two genres would be. Fighting back against a bullet hell in this type of gameplay style was incredibly fun and endearing. And I think it handles these two completely different genres really well in a pretty cool way. I also loved being able to get multiple weapons for the androids and pods, though I did mostly stick with the same the whole way through. Just the standard weapons and the beast slayer. Plus the laser for my pod. Hey, if it works, why fix it, right? I also really liked the chip system. I had a ton of fun figuring out which chips suited my style the most, and I liked feeling powerful because of them.

Outside of all that, the game looks and sounds AMAZING. The aesthetics particularly really got to me. I’m a huge fan of cities and buildings reclaimed by nature, and I’m a huge fan of sci-fi aesthetics mixed with modern and medieval aesthetics. And the game has both of these used in really great ways. Mix in some of the weird and creepy visuals thrown in throughout some of the game’s darker and sadder scenes? And it’s beautiful. I thought the music was really good too. I wasn’t crazy about it while playing it. But listening to it in the background while writing this makes me realize how good of an OST it is. I really love Pascal’s village theme, Treasured Times, and the credits music.

I also really adored a lot of the interested 4th wall breaks and ways they play with game mechanics and tie them into the functionality of the androids. A scene that really comes to mind is that the settings are actually your android settings. And having to go through them for the story mode, then getting to see it again as 9S. I also thought parts where your vision gets glitched out was very interesting, and things like that were really charming to me.

One of my favorite parts of the game, was absolutely the finale. Huge spoilers for this part obviously. I was teetering between not really liking the game anymore, and loving the game by the end. So the finale was really going to make or break it for me. But ultimately, I think the finale was AWESOME. Having to play as the pods fighting the credits to get a better ending was really cool and genuinely exciting to me. I had a total blast blazing through one final, tough bullet hell finale. Also, seeing all the cool little messages players left was so nice and genuinely heartwarming. I got messages from the USA, Mexico, even one from North Korea! It was so cool! And such a good idea. And getting help from everyone at the end was so awesome. Ultimately, I chose to give up my save data because the ending scene was actually pretty tough for me and I’m not that bad at bullet hells. So I figured it’d be selfish not to lend someone a hand out there in the world. (plus... to be fair, when my game pass expires, I won’t be playing this game much more lol.)

Stuff I didn’t like

With all that praise though, I don’t necessarily think the game was perfect either though. There was a lot of stuff that really rubbed me the wrong way. The gameplay had a lot of stuff that just didn’t feel right and was oddly frustrating. A big one for me was the lock on just being completely useless for some parts of the game, jumping around the enemies far off when there was something right in front of me ready to get hit. It made killing some enemies genuinely more challenging than needed. A huge issue I had with the gameplay was actually that there aren’t enough Shmup sections in the flight units. Most of them take place in hacking sections, which, in my opinion. Aren’t that fun, or at least considerably less fun than the way superior flight unit sections. And that’s the type of gameplay the ending uses. Which is a shame.

And there are some parts I sang praises about but I still have issues with. Like, I enjoy the game messing with the way you play because you’re controlling androids. But when you have to walk somewhere and the game disables your movement, or you have to kill something and the game disables your combat. It’s mostly just annoying. I really love the concept, and I think it’s not THAT bad. But it’s still annoying enough that I thought to mention it. And while I didn’t run into this issue, the really cute and touching aspects of the finale. Are you just completely locked out of them if you can’t pay for online? That really sucks and kind of kills the vibe of that ending. Same with having to delete your save data to help others. It’s cute! But why is it there? It all just feels so antagonizing for no reason.

I also had a big issue with Story B. You play through nearly the entirety of Story A again as 9S. Normally, I love stuff like this. Sonic games come to mind right away for games I enjoy that do this. But for Story B, it is the exact same game and story with minimal changes through it. Sure the opening and towards the ending, it’s different. But mostly, it’s identical. And then there’s just small snippets of way more interesting stuff with the way robots became sentient lightly peppered in to break up the monotony of doing the same thing twice. This second playthrough should’ve focuses HEAVILY on the robots. Even if it’s from 9S’ perspective, more should’ve been changed to show the robots. The part with the singing robot was BRUTAL, and I LOVED it. But you get very few new scenes like that. Perhaps Story B should’ve followed Pascal or a random enemy robot instead of 9S. Considering you also play as 9S for a lot of Story C. Imagine how gut wrenching it would be if Story B followed a random enemy robot evolving and learning about life and free will, only to get killed at the end by 9S or A2 or something. Idunno.

There’s also some gripes with the story. A big one is the fact that, and this is a HUGE spoiler. But 2B doesn’t feel like the main character. It feels like the main character is 9S, who I like, but isn’t as cool as 2B by a long shot. You barely play as 2B or even A2. SO MUCH of the game feels like it’s all about 9S and I gotta be honest, I’m not that interested in 9S. I like him, but maybe we could learn some more about the robots and their interesting problems instead of just seeing more about how 9S is so smart and awesome and genius so he has to be killed a bunch. Speaking of which, I don’t think I care for that aspect of 2B either? She has to kill 9S over and over because he keeps learning the truth about Yorha. In the end, even 2B is just a part of 9S’ story. Maybe that’s just me though. I feel like that whole concept could’ve been removed, and you could’ve had 2B and 9S having to deal with learning about the truth together. idk.

Overall, my biggest complaint is just that the game spends a little too much time on 9S and not enough time on all the interesting aspects it skims over. Again, the robots, I talked about this at length but I really would’ve loved to learn more about them. How about the existential reality that androids and robots have been fighting a meaningless war for dead masters for centuries? WHAT THE HELL WAS EMIL? There’s so much cool stuff in the world of Nier Automata that feels like it’s all skimmed over in favor of stuff that just didn’t really need to be there? I think a lot of these are relegated to sidequests, but they should’ve been a part of the main story. Maybe it’s just me.

Final Thoughts

Well, even after all those complaints and nitpicks. I have to say, I liked Nier Automata. I think it’s a cool game that explores things I thought most people weren’t interested in exploring. Both in its world and its gameplay. Especially not from a big triple A title. Some of these are things I’d like to explore in my own games so it’s nice to see a game with an interest in the same weird topics as me. I’m certainly interested in this series. I only own Drakengaurd, but I’d like to give it and Nier a shot sometime in the future if I can.

I like the hopeful nature of the ending and I liked the emotions I felt through the whole playthrough. Even when the game was scary and sad, I still had a good time with it, and I hope somewhere out there in the multiverse, the characters are living a much better life in peace.
