Ok so I follow you because of your amazing analyzing and theories of twilight, but it's gotten to a point I have to consider reading your stories, and besides a Paul lahote story here or there over the years, I haven't really read twilight stories, especially ones that aren't about the Wolfpack.

I'm scared. So I wanted to ask about yours, what is it like?

Is it crazy like full of plot twists and insanity and madness covered into brilliance (the good kind) or crazy in a way that I start liking bella and edward (the terrifying part)?

(If you answer this, please consider the fact it might actually make me reread twilight (the original) and start ranting worse. For both our sanities, is it smart?)

both! liking Bella & Edward is THE biggest plot twist of this saga LOL. i'm not really one to hype my work so bear with me. here's the difference between Twilight & In The Afterlight:

the familiar:

setting. rainy rural PNW vibes

rough plot. girl meets vampire. vampire wants to kill her. love ensues. it starts you off in familiar territory, then slowly peels away as the story progresses. you'll find enough of the "iconic" scenes to keep you oriented in nostalgia, but not so much that you feel chained to the original book.

characters. no OCs. Bella & Edward are somewhat OOC, but their core traits are still intact.

the unfamiliar(ish):

Bella's personality. i think it was @blurry-walker who made this excellent point: we're supposed to like Bella because of how she's described, not by how she acts. Bella is not really selfless, mature, observant, compassionate, intellectual, or self-aware. which would be fine... if that were the author's intention. i've tried making Bella a mix between how she's described & how she acts: selfless, contemplative, & stubborn, with a sense of humor. & i threw in a backstory & hobbies - i.e, drawing, music, reading - so she has a life besides Edward. (she can still act like she's 18 tho. as a treat.)

Edward's personality. no stalking, no anger issues or mood swings, no misogyny, no invalidation of Bella's choices, no militant chastity. just a vampire who's lost his way & startled to discover he is every bit a part of this world as Bella. more humorous, more overwrought/ romantic, more contemplative.

the result is a relationship that's rooted in mutual respect, common interests & values, & genuine companionship. they talk about philosophy, they exchange mixtapes, they tease each other, & have slightly less self-control when it comes to sexual intimacy

James/Victoria plotline

twilight is less fairytale, more gothic horror

deeper thematic discussions (bc i think they're neat! :D). what does it mean to be you? how do you find yourself again when you're lost? what's the secret to keeping your humanity in death?

vampire/Cullen lore. what's the difference between a golden-eyed vampire and a red-eyed one? what are "la tua cantantes" and "mates"? why are the Cullens going to high school? what's the Cullen-Volturi relationship like? who are the Cullens, really? i'm trying to paint them as grayer characters & have their personalities/backstories make sense for who they are.

werewolf lore. i *hate* canon imprinting - how an imprinter loses him/herself to the imprint, how the imprintee can't say no, the fact that they imprint on CHILDREN when the theory behind imprinting is to "find the strongest genes"... NO. i hate it all. i hate that smeyer appropriates the legends of the Quileute tribe & how stereotypes/ tropes of Native people are perpetuated in this series. i especially hate the double-standards Bella puts on the pack vs the coven. justice for the wolfpack or bust

since you mentioned liking the wolfpack (same), the sequel, Come Nightfall (aka New Moon), has way more wolfpack content than the original, & we see a lot more interactions between Jake & Bella. (and Bella & Sam!)

i don't feel it's my place to tell you whether you should read this or even whether it's good. if it helps, this is what other people say:

This fic features an Vampire Ascendant Astarion (a powered up vampire lord is the short of it) with a vampire bride Tav. The Tav I'm using (Naomi, a bard) is the same main OC from my multichapter with her and Astarion, Midnight Chimes, but this fic is very much a standalone and a sort of "what if they both ended up evil" AU occurring post-game. It's just a smutty one-shot for now, but I might end up writing more of their "evil" versions at some point if I have enough fun with it.

There's a lot of different interpretations of Ascended Astarion out there, but some concepts I'm playing with in Blood in the Mortar are:

Tav has been made into his bride and not just his spawn. This is a concept a lot of folks have played with and is based heavily off this excerpt from what I think is an old monster manual talking about vampire bride/groom rituals.

In the rendition of this I'm playing with, a bride and a spawn is really similar. Astarion could compel Tav if he wanted to. But, they have a really intense/intimate mental/telepathic link and he's gonna take a buttload of psychic damage if he did anything to hurt or really upset her.

It also works as a sort of perpetual feedback loop. They feel each other's happiness and affection for the other as if it was their own (and other, less pleasant feelings, too). Who the emotion originally started with starts to get a little blurry. Their individual wellbeing is really tied up in the other's happiness. It's intense and probably toxic but for the most part, they're both happy about it. (As Wyll comments in-game, they are the "unholiest union")

I wanted to toy with the protective/possessive streak in Ascended Astarion, but also, some text I saw in an epilogue that I think was ultimately unused in the game. Something about him hosting grand masquerades at his palace while Tav bolts the doors behind the party guests.

So, some uppity nobleman (or maybe another true vampire, I haven't decided yet) starts talking shit about Tav at one of Astarion's masquerades. It's clearly an effort to get a rise out of him, or to poke at what this nobleman perceives as Astarion's only weakness (Tav). But instead of getting the desired result, Astarion takes the "have you met my wife?" angle:

“Do you know what they call her? Other than mine, of course?” “The hero of Baldur’s Gate." Astarion waves a manicured hand irritably, as if swatting away a stray fly. “One of them, true, but isn’t there another name that comes to mind?” The man swallows thickly. “The Siren of the Sword Coast.” "And yet here you are," Astarion sneers with a curled lip, "ready to dash yourself upon the rocks like a little wayward ship blown astray. I can hardly blame you." His eyes soften, just past the shoulder of the lordling's gaudy doublet. In the low flutter of candlelight, he spies the sheen of sapphires set amongst delicate feathers wrought from silver. He'd had the mask made for her, with the likeness of a swan in mind. Still, as pretty as it is, his favorite gleam is those eyes, set between the glittering finery. She still kept the kiss of violet in them, even in death. It mingles with the red in her irises, like a rich, deep wine. "She is captivating, isn’t she?," Astarion sighs, a faint smile grazing his lips. "My beautiful bride." At long last, it seems, lord what's-his-name has found the decency to shut up. Astarion draws a long draught from his goblet, drawing a dark glare over the sheen of sweat that's started on the other man's brow. “You see," Astarion drawls, as the vintage seeps sweetly down his throat, "my beloved, oh, she’s a monster too. She so does love the taste of blood in her mouth, now that she’s supped of mine.”

And then they do murder and steamy (if wildly impractical) sex together. I think there's a grand piano involved. 👀

I'm kinda curious about your MC. Even though I've only seen their physical appearance, I'm curious about their personality, story, and style etc.

Oh hello, anon! I'm always surprised when people wanna know more about my MC (or OCs)! I shouldn't be, I love hearing about other people's, but I dunno that's just how it goes I guess.

Anyway, I have a post about Ciaran here and if you search the #misc mc ciaran tag you'll find a lot about them!

Personality-wise, Ciaran has a lot of energy, is extroverted, and is perpetually curious. They like to meet new people and make new friends. But they do have a temper. They really don't get along with Lucifer at first. Their response is usually to explode a bit and they tend to throw things at people. They often deliberately miss them, but in Lucifer's case they've actually hit him quite a few times. (I wrote a scene about this in which Ciaran does something nice for Lucifer in an attempt to apologize for hitting him in the head with a textbook lol.) Ciaran is a troublemaker and they like to have fun. They'll easily go along with all kinds of crazy brother schemes because it sounds fun or exciting. That being said, Ciaran can also be responsible when needed. He's very good at understanding other people and makes a decent demon therapist despite himself.

His story varies depending on the love interest and whether or not it's one of my many aus lol.

The beginning part is usually the same because no matter who Ciaran ends up with, they left the same life behind. They used to live in an apartment with their older sister, who owns her own bakery. But after Ciaran disappeared, their sister couldn't afford to pay the rent on her own and had to move back in with their mother. She goes on a bit of a quest to find Ciaran, eventually figuring out that they're not even in the human world anymore. With the help of a sorcerer and a witch, she finds her way to the Devildom just to complain about losing Ciaran's half of the rent. (Her name is Fiadh and I love her lol.)

There are a lot of characters that I think Ciaran could end up with. In fact, I can see Ciaran ending up with any of them. But I most often think of him with Barbatos, Solomon, or Mammon. And although I hadn't really considered this when I created Arsenios, I do think he and Ciaran are compatible, too.

I have an au where Ciaran is half-fae, I have one that's a classic coffee shop au, I have one where Ciaran is an angel, I have one where they're a sorcerer, etc etc etc~

I like to put them in various scenarios because it's fun!

For style, I'm assuming you mean how they dress? I like to think of Ciaran's clothing style as hipster with a side of punk. Like it's mostly sweaters and corduroy, but also Converse and leather jackets lol. They've been known to glam it up on occasion too and they like to have Asmo do their makeup. They obviously go out of their way to dye their hair blue, too. Their natural hair color is black.

Another thing about Ciaran that I think is important is that they're an artist. They used to work in an art gallery, but they're also a painter. They carry around a portable watercolor set, but they also paint on large canvasses in oils. One of the things they do is paint the ceiling in their room at the HoL. They're also very handy - good at fixing things and building things. They can build bookshelves or repair dry wall or do yard work. They're chubby but physically they're pretty strong, too.

Anyway, I could write so much about Ciaran, but these are the basics and I hope it kinda answered your question! Please feel free to send me any more specific questions you like! One day, I'll update Ciaran's profile post... I did Arrie's but I haven't gotten to Ciaran's yet.

Of course I do! And I have no problem doing this, though the answers might be short, sorry. I'm so sorry about that but hope you'll enjoy anyway!

1) Gets turnt up at a party on caprisun

Okay, if it wasn't Caprisun but actual alcohol, Mirror is the cheapest and easiest drunk while Brooklyn is the one who enjoys a good drink the most (and can hold her liquor the best). Caprisun though? It's super sugary and I've always seen Cat as the OC there that's most prone to sugar rushes...along with caffeine really affecting her, as a bonus headcanon.

2) Laughs a lot

I think this one is a three way tie between Amber, Dell, and Mari, all of whom are quick to laugh and smile. Mari and Amber are both just quick to find either the fun or the positives in a situation whilst the trickster Dell knows that laughter and smiles often can be used to great effect to endear yourself to others.

3) Will blare loud death metal music but is a cinnamon roll

Okay, death metal doesn't really exist in The Ever Young, but if it did, this is so Nina or Mirror, mostly because this girl behind the screen actually has a really huge love for metal (been listening to way too much Children of Bodom lately haha), and because I find it funny to have someone super small and cute and seemingly completely shy and innocent like Nina be into music like that. But then, she's a lot more than she looks in most aspects.

4) Likes hugs

Okay, this is easier to answer this way:

Even the suggestion of a hug makes Mirror panic and move as far away from you as possible. Unless she really likes you and trusts you, hugging Tea will end up with her stabbing you. Dell would let you hug them but there's a 50/50 chance something really bad might end up happening to you. Hugs with Lou end up with your wallet gone, just because they can. Cat hates hugs from people she isn't close to and Whisp hates physical contact of any sort from people she doesn't trust. Brooklyn has to be in the mood for hugs, even from people she likes and while Nina likes hugs, she is really bad sometimes at remembering how strong she is so hugs can be very painful from her. So only Mari, Marta and Amber are safe bets for hugs.

5) Will stab you if you take their piece of pizza

Okay, so this is just related to food in general and not just pizza but both Lou and Whisp know what it is to starve, to be completely without food. And because of that, both of them do have some food-related insecurities that do lead them to becoming rather territorial of their food, though neither one of them would probably resort to murder if you did take it.

6) Stays up too late and regrets it

Mirror doesn't sleep. Not for pleasure, at least. She is capable of passing out from pain or because of injury but she has no need to actually sleep, nor does she know the experience of being tired.

7) Lets their phone die

Okay, phones don't really exist in The Ever Young but if they did, I see Tea being the one who cares least for her phone and the one most likely to be perpetually on low or no battery.

8) Eyebrow Game. Strong AF.

Dell has the strongest eyebrow game. Like, their eyebrows are always great...even when they shapeshift, if what they shapeshift into has eyebrows, they even make sure to bring strong eyebrow game in that form.

9) Regrets decisions made 5 seconds ago

I think almost all of the characters do face this at least once during the entire storyline, but I think it happens most frequently for both Amber, who does things just for her own amusement without really thinking things completely through, and Nina, who , when upset, becomes just someone who acts completely on emotion and impulse.

10) Will punch you in the face, and you will thank them for it

Amber, Tea, and Mari can all do this and the person would have either asked them to or thanked them for doing so because of powers these women possess throughout the story.

11) Listens to gentle instrumental music but looks like they will kill you

Tea is someone I do see as enjoying just peaceful instrumentals during meditation or training, something soothing and calm in the background for her mind to absorb. Make no mistake though, not only does she look like she'll kill you, if you pose a real and present danger to her or those she feels the need to protect, she will gut you.

12) Makes flower crowns

I don't know why but there is actually a scene, because it popped into my head as something cute and light and charming in between some super serious moments, just kind of roughly written out, of both Nina and Cat chilling together in the grass and making flower crowns together for the others.

13) Makes non-funny puns

Amber loves to toss out really horrible pick-up lines to make others laugh and it's hit or miss on whether they succeed. Meanwhile Lou has a very dry and acerbic wit and a lot of their jokes tend to go over people's heads.

14) May or may not own 500 stuffed animals with all intricate plotlines and personalities

Okay, so it's not so much stuffed animals, but I do think Whisp is someone who made up lots of imaginary friends, fully fleshed out people with their own families and stories and personalities, to combat some of the loneliness she's spend a lot of her time in.

15) Has an obsession with dragons

Its' Dell. I don't even know why, it was just the first and immediate answer that came to mind and the only answer that feels at all right.

16 & 17) Doesn't blink twice when it comes to murder & will offer to kill someone for their friend

Okay, I am going to combine these two. And I'm going to be upfront before any of the story beyond the world-building even gets posted. Upfront and honest - The Ever Young is not a soft place. It is not a safe, secure, happy world where there are no real stakes in place. The Ever Young, at the point we go into the story at, is a powder keg, a land on the brink of all out war. There are no guarantees of safety or continued survival for anyone living in that land and even the most pacifistic of these OC's, if push comes to shove, would end up killing to protect either themselves but especially their loved ones.

18) Likes rocks

Mirror, for some reason not even she understands, seems to have retained a comprehensive and thorough knowledge of the various types of rocks and gemstones and the symbolism behind them. I mean, she can't remember anything about herself but she knows all that. I also see Marta and Cat both liking pretty rocks and gemstones, with Marta being prone to wearing jewelry made of them, particularly a necklace Kusakabe gifted her made of turquoise.

19) Knows how to bake a cake

I see both Mari and Marta being good bakers. And what's more, it's something both women truly enjoy doing and before things got so bad in The Ever Young, I like to believe the two women would meet up throughout their years growing up together to have baking dates, where they'd talk and laugh and enjoy each others company whilst making delicious treats.

20) Knows all the words to Queen's Bohemian Rhapsody

Okay, so again, I don't think this is something that would canonically exist in the world of The Ever Young, but if it did, the answer to this question would be Brooklyn and Cat both because nothing will ever convince me that all of HOMRA's boys don't know every word to this song and that they don't sometimes just spontaneously and drunkenly start singing it in the bar.

21) Has screen shots that will ruin lives

While not screenshots, because again, no cell phones exist in The Ever Young, both Whisp and Dell tend to trade in information and secrets and that's part of what makes both characters quite as dangerous as they are.

22) Likes being petty

Honestly, Amber does find some amount of joy in being a little childish and petty, maybe even instigating some petty revenge or prank wars, though she never becomes actively mean and cruel in those endeavors unless the person in question truly deserves it.

23) Will cut you

Tea is one of the most accomplished and well-known swordswomen in the land. She won't just cut you, she'll carve you up like a Christmas turkey.

24) Will get angry at themselves when they develop a crush on someone

Okay, Mirror struggles to really understand her own emotions and even more so, she struggles to feel like it's okay for her to have any of those emotions, especially towards other people, as she feels she would just be a burden or something unpleasant to them so the first sign of her liking someone would honestly scare her so much. I also think Lou, Dell, and Whisp have really hard times trusting other people fully and so, when they feel that attachment or attraction to another person, they do have some complicated and conflicting emotions because they are scared to let people get too close to them, because they all have been burned badly by people in their pasts.

25) Will fight someone twice their size

Nina? She isn't even five feet tall. Does that stop her from kicking ass and taking on a literal giant at one point? Most definitely not and she'll tell you it was one of the most fun experiences she's ever had, she had a ball going up against him.

Name: Vespera Nightingale

Nicknames: Ves, Vessie, Vespie

Ves is a 2nd year Diasomnia student, she/her/they, INTP.

Personality- She’s superstitious, the type to believe in karma and good luck charms, horoscopes and the supernatural and all that.

Ves is also an insomniac to boot, barely able to sleep more than a few hours each night, and thus she has a perpetual flat, melancholic expression on her face almost always.

Her biggest red flag would be her overall vindictiveness and vengeful streak. Her temper is actually quite short, and although she doesn’t show it outright, if you somehow tick her off, she’s already planning your demise or flinging a nasty curse behind your back. Most of the time her “retributions” are harmless, if annoying inconveniences (such as turning Sebek’s hair diarrhea brown), as she doesn’t really have the heart to do anything too dangerous.

Ves is able to admit that sometimes she does take things too far, and will usually knit something, like a scarf or maybe a pair of mittens as an apology. She likes making sweaters for her dormmates in particular.

On the positive: she’s extremely resourceful and an adaptive thinker. One of her strengths is her endless imagination and boundless creativity (often wasted by her brainstorming for ways to get back at people). And despite her sour expression, Ves is also more optimistic than she looks. She’s quite hardworking and productive, and actually spends alot of time studying and cleaning.

Ves also seems to be picking up a new hobby or interest almost every week, seeing as she has plenty of spare time on her hands. But just as quick as she picks something up, Ves may drop the interest just as fast and move onto something else entirely. Her latest fixation so far is old movies that she binge watches with the Film Appreciation Club. The few hobbies that have stuck with her so far are reading, jigsaw puzzles (the 1000 piece sets), and handicrafts such as sewing, knitting, and embroidery. Ves is a particularly avid reader and can sometimes go through 2-3 books a week, usually on magical history or weird magic anomalies.

Other fun facts and tidbits about Ves:

-her birthday is on 2/29 and she hates it, in fact she’d prefer not to celebrate it at all. If you really ask her she’ll probably just lie and say 3/1. Or curse you.

-favorite food is pudding, least favorite is anything with caffeine

Overall, her belief in superstitions and vengeful tendencies may cause others to view her as childish or immature. So a good match would be someone who wouldn’t mind that (or…..would help her in her petty crimes). If it isnt someone as eccentric as her, they should also be able to rein her in if needed. They’d also need to be someone who can handle clinginess because Ves gets attached REAL QUICKLY. I’d say she’s mildly yandere but she’s quite naive and innocent when it comes to romance. Definitely believes babies are delivered by storks and that handholding is ~forbidden~

i'll explain why i chose him:

i actually spent quite a lot of time thinking which character would be the best (or at least good) match for ves and i wasn't sure if i should go with a more chaotic and eccentric partner for her or someone who's more chill. the second option sounded more logical because, you know, someone's gotta make sure ves is not causing too much chaos, but the first option sounded more fun! also i feel like some characters wouldn't have enough patience for her I'M SO SORRY i think ves and floyd's dynamic would be very interesting, it's like you never know what these two are gonna do next. floyd would definitely help ves out with their pranks or he would actually be the one to suggest ideas for how they can "take their revenge" on someone. but if ves finds someone too annoying, floyd can just squeeze them-

floyd doesn't really get ves's interest in things like horoscopes or supernatural stuff, but he does think it's cute of her to like things like that. he may tease her for it, but he doesn't really mean it.. well, maybe he does mean it, but not in a bad way, he just thinks it's funny. he won't let anyone say they're childish for having hobbies like that though. also yeah, he did laugh when he first heard about their birthday, but then he said that maybe ves should just celebrate her birthday on february 28th or she really should go with march 1st. or both! she can have two birthdays, she deserves it. oh and when february 29th actually comes, it means that they can have three birthdays!

oh, you don't have to worry about ves being clingy, floyd wouldn't mind that at all! he would love it actually. he's already a very affectionate guy, but ves acting like this makes him refuse to let her go when he's hugging her. he thinks her being so innocent is adorable and he can try to play along just for fun. or he can actually destroy her innocence. who knows, depends on his mood. and oh? she's mildly yandere? WELL THAT'S INTERESTING. again, he wouldn't think it's weird or scary and he even would find it cute <3 he's a strange man, okay.

I'm between chaotic and lawful neutral. she kinda does whatever the hell she wants and is selfish but shes also very traditional and does a lot of shit because of that and is afraid to step outside of that. let's say lawful neutral.

A6: Does your OC tend to assume their interpretation of events and reality is correct, or do they question it? I.e., “I’m sure that’s what you said” versus “It’s possible I misheard you.”

I think she's more confident in this kinda thing than most would expect but it's only because she has a relatively good memory and tends to take things quite literally (and she tends to make fearful worst-case assumptions as well, which are hard to shake ofc). however if someone QUESTIONED her about it she'd start doubting herself. she is so vulnerable to gaslighting </3

oh All the time. It's her thing. saying "aw well i guess its just how things are :/" is how she copes with 100% of her life though. insane screaming-on-the-inside levels of complacency that she's yet to realize is the Problem 40 years later.

she's very observant but whether or not she extracts anything from the things she observes, especially socially, is a different story. she naturally very detail-oriented though, it's why shes so good at (most) of her jobs.

i mean *i* think shes cute so im biased but shes pretty average/not particularly Conventionally attractive...? YES she is perpetually underdressed and looks older than she actually is from stress and has messed up teeth and rosacea and huge ears and is boney and mousey this makes her an ANGEL to me

not unless the other person asked to. she's too busy intensely minding her own business and fearing for her life due to existing in public (she would hate walmart so much)

shes kinda got mean/sarcastic/ironic humor unless its done @ her then it makes her piss and cry :/

yeah, it doesn't take a ton for her to open up to people, she just always regrets it when she does. she used to be real with raymond in her youth even tho she was a weird kid and he didnt rlly get it. then for a long time she didn't really have anyone she could be that deep with apart from being that coworker that overshares with you then never talks to you again. the next time she was really deeply honest with someone was faust for the most part but naturally he's using that to be evil against her now. shes beginning to get personal with selma as well but obviously it's not as deep since theyve just met and selma is kinda impossible to talk to without being criticized anyway. sometimes it helps though.

her moral code is largely just derived from region zero's Cultural Norms/Values and she takes it very seriously, mostly out of fear of what would happen if people strayed away from it. not in the sense that she'd confront people about it or prevent them from doing what they do, but she does think differently of people and it gives her a great sense of Anxiety (unreasonable)

C3: Is it important for them to be with people (socially, intimately, whatever) whose major ideological tenets align with their own?

See above. but honestly she's not the type to argue about it. she's been around all sorts of people in her life and it's never really been an issue with her personally.

comfortable (consistently suicidal for 25 years) but not comfortable enough (to choose a more efficient method than the ones she chooses even tho shes constantly surrounded by firearms)

she IS intelligent in that she is quite booksmart and more importantly she picks up on new skills easily most of the time. specifically she has a great understanding of machinery and is well-versed enough to use her skills in many different areas. she wouldn't agree though, she'd say some shit like 'i just work here' or 'i just push buttons' or something. She doesn't realize she really has a talent. partially because so many other people work in the same trades as her so she doesnt really feel special, partially because she's just hard on herself and her lack of skills in....other areas, partially because she thinks that what she does is easy baby business when it's insane to anyone who doesnt know wtf shes talking about.

E5: What’s their highest education level? Do they want to continue their education?

Her highest level of formal education is high school but most of her career education comes from the military and apprenticeship in her Fields. I imagine shes got Some sort of official certification in being a weapon technician and powerplant operator and such...

F1: What sort of home do they live in now, if at all? How did they end up there?

well she lives in selma's office/house if that counts LOL i suppose it does since she'll be there Indefinitely 😬 before that and living in thr Capital for a year i think she lived in apartments a lot, all lonely n shit. not that she'd be home much with her 70 hr/week jobs but once she started working in the office i think she got to move somewhere more bougie in the suburbs.

F5: How handy are they? Can they fix appliances, cars, cabinets, et cetera?

shes EXTREMELY handy its like her #1 favor that she can offer to others. i think she's most skilled in household stuff like basic plumbing/electric/carpentry (combination of having an interest in learning these things, NEEDING to know these things bcz of being poor and the only one at home most of the time, and her having and understanding of Similar Mechanisms) and guns of course (more niche, not something you offer to everyone O_O). I think she could do some basic car stuff too if she read through the directions.

F7: What’s their “dream career” or job situation?

she's so tired of working at this point in her life but won't admit it to herself LOL. i think if she had to have another job though and there were no politics involved in the job one chooses, she'd just be a handyman on commission LOL.

G3: Does your OC find their family supportive? If not, what would be an example why not?

Not particularly, no. she was just kinda Neglected as a child because her parents worked all the time and were too tired the rest of the time. and obviously things with raymond went south pretty early on..... they never really started caring after her childhood depression struck either so theres really not much to say they were supportive of LOL. even when she joined the army they were pretty understandably ambivalent about it even though it'd arguably be just as (if not More) beneficial to their household income than raymond's joining. nowadays she sighs and says Thats Just How It Is (how it Was anyway.....i think her parents are dead at this point in her life) but that kind of upbringing + everything else is quite formative to her overall mental illness.

G6: Do they have any favorite childhood memories?

not a ton. i think getting to hang out with raymond when he was home was always a rare good and happy time to be had tho. their 1950s asses probably went to go get icecream or somethin together idk what they do for fun there.

H1: What is your OC’s orientation, romantic and/or sexual? Has it ever been a source of stress for them? Have they always been pretty sure of their orientation?

she is Bi Sexual. YES stressful NO not always pretty sure. their society is pretty laissez faire about sex(uality) but the assumption that you get married to some guy in your 20s then have 1-3 kids to keep the population booming is still a Thing. shes not much of a romantic thats into marriage OR god forbid having children so thats one setback. plus way too much of an outcast and workaholic to form many meaningful friendships nonetheless relationships. it's not really a top priority for her in either case but the being-with-another-woman part would just be another layer of stress for her (already bullied for being dykey but mostly just bcz shes easy to bully). idk if shes ever really been in any serious relationships but maybe a few non-serious ones. the sex fantasies are crazy tho.

H9: What are some things that your OC finds to be an instant turn-off in potential partners?

i think shes pretty openminded at this point in her life but idk like..... someone too clingy. someone thats a previous coworker or something (EXCEPTIONS CAN BE MADE)

Nah i think she pretty much takes what she can get nothing specific. the one thing her autism will NOT interfere with

I'd think so. I think she's got pretty simple taste in food, never really craves anything too exciting or out of the ordinary.

alarmingly inactive for...being the literal actual president. the most political thing she's really done is join the military/work for the government but even then it was always just about making ends meet (bullshit answer for all of the horrors she has been complicit in but it is true). she doesn't care that much about politics, just about people not dying. wow if only someone could figure out a way to make that happen :/

J6: How do they react to people whose political viewpoints are very opposite of theirs?

she doesn't really care that much (see above) but tends to think theyre privileged or careless to think such things about the state of the Region or that such things could ever be a viable solution. but she will learn.....she will be....RE-EDUCATED

J7: How much interest in environmental health do they have?

like -10000% interest bcz she hates to see the consequences of what her industry's poor practices have sown almost as much as she hates accountability. selma's squirrels enchant her tho.

i havent rlly actually thought about it much but idk like......dangers of Complacency..... dangers of being a girltwink in this cruel cruel world 😤

shes like me only in Some ways but i didn't really create her to be that way either. sorry i dont decide anyones personalities they just get born one day.

i wanted a kinda evil cunt!?!!! i dont fully remember tbh but i knew she was a President. i knew she liked Nukes. i knew hit porcupine tree album Signify. she hasnt honestly changed a lot compared to some older ocs but i think i definitely intended for her to be a more Active government-hating rogue force. now her inactivity/escapism/neglect is what Makes her an active force (i had to find a reason to justify why she did the stuff she did in the first place). now shes effected by being sad. have some throwback images from her conception:

Hi, I really hope this question isn’t offensive. I read the ask about someone wanting to name a character “Kichi” and you recommended that they completely rename the character, and I’m just wondering what is the harm in giving a character a name that isn’t a common traditional name? In Western naming, people give kids and characters random names all the time and we usually just think “huh, that strange, but unique. cool”. So is there some big cultural difference regarding naming in Japan? Again I’m really sorry if this is offensive, I just want to understand

I am so glad that you asked this question, because I think it's a really important one!!

This situation is less about unusual Japanese names, and much more about respecting the naming customs of a culture that you are not a part of.

To answer your question: unusual names absolutely do exist in Japan. (Look up kira kira names if you're interested in this topic!) If unusual names exist, why did I recommend them to choose a different name?

The answer is simple: The writer is not Japanese.

Japanese people are allowed to give their children and characters whatever outlandish Japanese name they want should they choose to. This is because they have the necessary cultural background, cultural knowledge, and cultural experience to make that informed decision.

Non-Japanese people don't have that.

When a non-Japanese person names a character something that's not a real Japanese name, it can perpetuate harm.

It's akin to naming an Asian character 'Ching Chong' because it 'sounds Asian enough'. That's a more extreme, blatant version of the same thing.

This is true for all cultures, but I feel like it's especially important for Japanese names because of the popularization of anime. Not only are some names used for anime characters rather unusual, unique and not something that would be a real person's name, it has also given many people a false sense of ownership and skewed knowledge of Japanese culture. This has resulted in a lot of cultural appropriation, fetishization and exotification that is quite frankly, stressful, infuriating and extremely, very racist.

I cannot tell the the number of times I have seen absolutely atrocious, often racist names for Japanese OCs.

Let me flip this around for a minute.

In Western naming, people give kids and characters random names all the time and we usually just think “huh, that strange, but unique. cool”.

This is actually exactly my point! Westerners can give their kids whatever random name that they like, and we will usually just think "huh, that's strange but unique. Cool!" This is because Westerners understand their language and culture enough to give their children a unique, unusual name that still acceptably works as a name. And if it doesn't, it's a purposeful choice on the parts of the parents/writer. They know what they're doing! They have all the knowledge they need to make an informed decision because it's part of their culture.

I'm not saying that you can't ever use a more unusual, nontraditional name for Japanese characters. What I am saying is that a lot of names that people give to their Japanese OCs don't respect naming conventions or the Japanese culture. More often than one would hope, it's blatantly appropriative, disrespectful and ignores the culture.

When you are naming a Japanese character, please not only do your research, but also consult with a Japanese person if possible. There are so many resources and lists out there that are terrible, and the ones that aren't can be woefully incomplete and oversimplified. (See my review of Behind The Name here and my post on summarizing the naming process here.) If you're looking for an unusual name and not a traditional one, it's best to go directly to someone who is Japanese to get their opinion and help on finding a name that is not only appropriate for your character, but also sensitive and respectful.

Just like most times you want to hang out at the Reaper Dispatch building, ERIC has to sneak you in.

And not so much sneak you in, as put a pair of glasses on you, tell you not to look anyone in the eye, pretend you’re “that new transfer from Sussex”, and under absolutely no circumstances let anyone tell his boss that you’re visiting. It’s a poor effort because like most supernatural creatures, Grim Reapers can sense humans. You’re pretty sure the whole office knows what’s up by now.

Of course, as long as you get to come visit ALAN, especially when he’s not doing very well, you’ll happily pretend the other Reapers are none the wiser.

Eric’s had his arm around your shoulder the whole time you walk, as usual. Not only is he protective of you, he also pretty obviously relishes any chance to give you affection that he can. Even though you’ve heard a few of the other Reapers say he’s intimidating or serious, that hasn’t been your experience. He’s big-hearted and friendly, and is forever sneaking kisses when he thinks nobody’s looking. You consider yourself incredibly lucky to have him as one of your lovers.

“So, he’s doing better now, right?” you ask as the two of you approach the door of the Medical Division.

“Mhm, doin’ a lot bet’er. He wouldn’t say it, bu’ I think he’d do good wit’ seein’ ye. Jus’ keep it down’, y’ knoo, ‘r ye migh’ get th’ stink-eye from ol’ Nurse Frightingale.” Eric winks before opening the door and gesturing you to walk through. “Aft’r ye, m’ darlin’.”

You push up on your tiptoes to press a kiss to his jaw. “What a gentleman.” With that you slip inside, Eric following so he can close the door behind the two of you.

The Medical Divisionis as quiet as most hospitals you’ve ever been in. It’s cool in temperature and you can hear the chip-choppy hum of an electric fan or two. That along with the sound of some machines are the only things you can hear, though. Everything is a soft white or pale blue shade, and more than anything, the air smells clean with soap and disinfectant. Despite Eric’s not-quite-incorrect observation of the department head, this is a relaxing place that perpetuates healing.

“Afternoon, Elysia,” he greets with a raised hand. “Jus’ brought (Name) by f’r a li’l bit, ‘f tha’s okay?”

The department head peers through her glasses at him with a very unimpressed look on her face. “Don’t get so casual, Mr. Slingby. It’s ‘Nurse Malla’ to you. Feel free to stay as long as you wish, provided you don’t get rowdy. The last thing Mr. Humphries needs is the two of you working him into a tizzy.”

He gives her a salute and mimes zipping his lips shut. “Aye, no w’rries, Nurse Malla. Ye go’ m’ word tha’ we won’t dare do nothin’ excitin’.”

You can’t help but smother a giggle as Elysia gives a long-suffering sigh. “Enjoy your visit.”

“’Preciate it, m’ lady!” Eric grins as he ushers you over to the bed Alan’s in right now.

Predictably, he looks to be attempting to review something in his ledger even though he’s clearly not feeling great. Behind his spectacles, his eyes look tired, and his shoulders are sagging like he wants nothing more than to sleep. Based on what Eric told you, however, he’s been asleep for an hour or so now.

You make sure Alan can see you before lowering yourself down onto the bed, leaning over and giving his forehead a gentle kiss. “Busy little bee, aren’t you?”

“Ah… (Name). Oh, dear, I didn’t expect Eric to bring you by.” He melts into the kiss anyway, and into the identical one that Eric gives him once he sits down. “Mm, you two. You didn’t have to come here… I’ll be leaving soon.”

You reach for his hand, and he doesn’t stop you, curling his fingers around yours. When you glance down, you’re not surprised to see thorny scars starting to twine around his wrist. “You need to relax,” you murmur. “That’s why this attack happened, isn’t it? Stress.”

“It could have been, or it could have just been from nothing. This disease doesn’t need a reason to flare up.” Alan lifts your hand and presses a reassuring kiss to your knuckles. “Don’t worry about me, darling. The attack only lasted a moment, and I’m feeling much better now.”

Eric chuckles, taking Alan’s other hand. “Aw, c’mon, d’ar. Ye cannae fault th’ poor thing f’r bein’ w’rried ‘bout ye. (Name)’s righ’ tha’ ye work tae hard.”

Alan offers an exhale through his nose, exasperated look obviously aimed at the both of you. “And you don’t work hard enough, dear. So it balances out. Anyway, I don’t fault them for being worried. I…” It seems the only reason he pauses is to glance at you with a vaguely guilty look. “… I’m just trying to reassure you, love.”

“I know.” You mirror the kiss he gave your hand on his, the same way Eric did with the kiss to Alan’s forehead. The one difference you make is that your kiss is pressed to the forming scars on his wrist. “I can’t help worrying when this happens, though. You and Eric are really important to me. I just want you to take care of yourself.” You bring his hand down, then give him a smirk. “Or you could just let us do it?”

Barely a second passes before Eric claps you on the shoulder. “Aye, darlin’, tha’s a grea’ idea!! Alrigh’, it’s settled then.”

Alan arches an eyebrow. It appears you’ve both lost him. “Oh, goodness. Dare I even ask what is settled, Eric?”

That grin on Eric’s face would definitely be trouble if he weren’t your partner in crime right at this moment. “Soon’s ye ge’ outta haur, we’re haulin’ y’r s’rry arse home early, an’ then it’s time f’r nothin’ bu’ a night’a us takin’ care’a ye! Coimhead air sin,good idea, (Name)!”

“Oh. Oh, no, the two of you can’t just—”

Alan’s halfway through his protest when a pair of heels clicks on the floor. “Slingby! (Surname)! I warned you not to work him up. So that’s it; get out!”

It takes just seconds for Eric to tug you toward the door. “Thanks f’r once, Elysia! I’ll ‘ave s’me biscuits ‘r summat on y’r desk taemarra’ mornin’!”

What follows the two of you out is a frustrated, “It’s Nurse Malla! Get it wrong one more time and you’ll find yourself here as a patient!”

Please don't worry about your English, you're doing great !! I find that reading and writing are amazing ways to help improve language skills though !! I'm soo far from being a good writer, although I'd like to think that I've improved in the 2 years I've been writing fics !!

so i inserted a character into danganronpa 1 and 2 and i really like her so i wanted to share her on my main. get ready for me to get all professional and shit

also don't mind my shitty art. i cant keep her face consistent and my art style is atrocious but idk how else to show her to u all so

Sumire Hoshi, the Ultimate Actress (1st game design)

She is part of a sort of self-indulgent au (she started off as a reflection of me, as most of my characters do). She's a lesbian, and acts incredibly bubbly so that they dont see her sadness (we'll get into that later). She befriends Byakuya in this (cuz i actually like him while basically no one else does).

Byakuya isn't the only one she befriends though. She becomes friends with Leon, Mondo, Chihiro, Taka, and Sakura. She copies all of their sprites after they die (minus Byakuya, obviously).

Her backstory is: Her past girlfriend was basically a tsundere. Super mean, but they both liked each other. They ended up getting together. But a while into them dating, her girlfriend killed herself. Sumire had no idea why. She had acted just like her normal tsundere self all this time, so why...? She usually was able to sense when people were acting, too... But she remembered that she had told her girlfriend tips on how to act convincingly. So now, she immediately tries to befriend mean people in the same way she befriended her past girlfriend. So that explains why she was so quick to try and help Byakuya.

I was also thinking about how she wouldn't have an alibi for the chapter 5 murder and could also be executed. The game would continue on, but they would eventually fail (for a reason I don't know yet) and get another bad ending.

That's all I can think of for her 1st game appearance for now!

Unfortunately I have literally no clue how to draw her, so I used this as a little guide to how she would look. I basically searched "lesbian fashion" or something and modified one of the pics a little. (she probably wouldn't have the hat actually, but im too lazy to remove it so)

In this game, she shows up after everyone introduces themselves, and perpetually knows all their names (besides imposter, obviously. she had a good laugh at their appearance). She's always missing during free time events, and nearly always seems to carry a backpack. In game, you would never learn what's in her backpack, besides the journal because it was shown in the photo of the party.

Also, a super important thing! She doesn't have a cottage (she was put in too late to program that) and Monokuma gives her handcuffs for the entirety of nighttime, to limit her ability to talk with the future foundation.

Oh and also, she's super pissed at them for making the password 11037.

In all the class trials, she figures out who the culprit is pretty fast, because she has experience with these tricks. She never says anything though, as everyone is similar to the her classmates. In chapter 3, she figures out the culprit super quickly because she can sense Mikan's act. She does actually battle with Hajime, and while she's proven wrong, she's proven right later in the trial (idk what about).

In this AU, Nekomaru dies from the attack and never becomes a robot... which gives you a good idea of what happens next. Though I think I need to work out a few things, cuz they don't line up with the murder. In chapter 4, she notices that her handcuffs are taken off and heads over to the tower. She meets with Gundham, and after briefly petting his hamsters, they fight, and he wins. He does the same thing to Sumire as he did to Nekomaru, and ties her up. She wakes up 30 minutes later, and it goes the same way the original murder went.

She of course is still alive in real life, so after this all happens, she stays with the remnents for a bit. (I didn't watch the anime, so I have no clue what happens).

...and that's basically it. Sorry, I'm so bad at exciting endings.

Extra Stuff! I like to imagine Byakuya and her being great friends and fucking with each other at the future foundation. Like Sumire would constantly kick his door open, so he would too.

Byakuya could also just wordlessly walk into her office and Sumire would know to go out and get rid of Toko/Syo.

I like to think about them playing ace attorney together, idk why lol

Also, she stands with one hand behind her back. She says it's because people will see it as her normally standing if she hid anything behind her back.

How about all of my ladies? ;) They’re a riot when they get together.

♣ - What is one thing thatthey find embarrassing? (About them, others, things in general)

Zee: Over the past few years, Zee has learnt to poke ample fun at herself, and to see the humor in thestrange or awkward events that happen around her. Still, there are a few thingsthat continue to acutely embarrass her. Such as watching a ‘pity party’, or agroup of people who coddle a victim, invalid, or dependent to the point ofpatronizing them. Or when her lungs act up in public (and people around herflail in panic). Or when she has to walk away—scuffed up and reeling—from aconfrontation that she jumped into willingly… only to discover two seconds laterthat she’s well out of her depth. It’s even worse if the person she’strying to help ends up saving herinstead. So much for heroism.

Najat: Nearly nothingembarrasses this woman. She was exposed to awkward situations every other dayin the neighborhood she grew up in, and that doesn’t even include the thingsthat her bluntly-honest family would say to her (on principle). So what would make Najat blush is professionalembarrassment: if she makes a basic mistake in approaching an antsy animal, andloses a patch of skin in the process. Or if she accidentally-insults someone shejust met, either by cracking the wrong joke, botching their name, or justoffering the wrong gesture at the wrong time in the name of friendliness. Ykharwould know…

Anna: Despite her toughfront, not much is needed to embarrass Anna. What routinely mortifies her is watchinga bad performance, from an artist, writer, speaker, or athlete who is either completelyoblivious to how bad they are, or choking up in front of the audience. Or ifsomeone whistles at her when she isn’t wearing her signature black armor. (Theyalmost try never again after she glares at them.) Or if someone triescourting her, with textbook romance and bald declarations of love. That lastone never fails to turn her beet-red, as her ex-fiance could testify.

♫ - What kind of music do they enjoy?

Zee: She isn’t much of a musicaficionado. So what music she does like is an eclectic collection ofsongs that burrowed their way into her head from sheer familiarity, and arerelived with nostalgia. They are usually what her parents like to listen to,or what plays in their restaurants: piano acoustic, Latin guitar andflamenco, smooth jazz, and 80’s rock. Basically… Zee listens to elevatormusic.

Najat: She loves her musicals. Itdoesn’t quite matter what genre they are, or if they’re from a theater show, amovie, or a Disney feature: if the song has catchy lyrics and an ongoing storybehind it, Najat is sure to remember it, if not the whole musical itself. Shealmost never turns on the radio for road trips.

Anna: She is the biggest musicophileof the lot, with an encyclopedic knowledge of rock and its subgenres, and nopassing familiarity with classical music and folk songs. But what really earnsher love are experimental blends of styles: the stranger and the more exotic,the better. At the time she entered Eldarya, she was in the midst of a loveaffair with symphonic heavy metal: mixinga classical string ensemble (like her double bass) with machine-gun drums and screamingelectric guitars.

(As for me… my musical tastes are prettyevenly-split between these three ladies. ^_^ I like anything that soundsinteresting and involves more than just four notes per chorus. And they’reusually found in either my parents’ records collection, musicals, or nichebands. Genre is barely a concern for me.)

✖ - Whois someone they just cannot stand?

In El?

Zee: She gets along with most charactersin the Guard… with the exception of Miiko. Sure, the woman loves her employees,but Zee is less than impressed with the way her quasi-pyromaniac boss likes to reactto crises, or outside input. If she can’t respect a stupid bulldozer of a manin power, she’s not about to respect a stupid bulldozer of a woman in power. Forsimilar reasons, Zee is known to butt heads with Karuto (i.e. the satyr likes to shoot down the tips she offers within five seconds of her opening hermouth). The nerd rage builds up.

Najat: She’s the forgiving sort, andtries to give others the benefit of the doubt whenever she can… But that snakeNevra really makes her skin crawl. Evenwhen ignoring the fact that he’s perpetually horny. And his loose cannon of a littlesister is hardly better in reassuring her. So if there’s a vampire-protectionkit for sale in El, Najat would make the first bid.

Anna: Ezarel. Ezarel is always at thetop of her hit-list. Anna tries to stay one floor apart from the wiseass elf atall times, if only to minimize her chances of clobbering him (and depriving theAbsynthe Guard of their leader). Miiko comes to a close second. Nevra too getson her nerves whenever he tries to make small talk with her (never without ahealthy dose of sly compliments and mental jujitsu). And Alajea, Chrome, andMery each make her reach for a strong drink if they try talking to her for morethan fifteen minutes. Yes, there are actually a lot of characters Anna is notfond of.
